</p>

<p>
	A Whangaparāoa woman who recently lost her beloved dog was dealt another round of tragedy when the dog she bought to replace him broke two of his legs.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Diane Woodhouse, 67, turned to Givealittle after surgery and vet bills for her puppy climbed beyond $20,000.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Woodhouse was “distressed for six months” after her Italian greyhound of 14 years, Georgio, died of old age in January this year.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“He’ll always be the first,” the semi-retiree said.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“He’s on the mantle now, there’s pictures of him everywhere.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Heartbroken, she made arrangements to buy another Italian greyhound “to be the fun, cool friend I need as I age gracefully”.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	She travelled to Christchurch to collect new puppy Romeo from a breeder and brought him home to Army Bay.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	But within seven weeks, the “fearless” pup, whom she affectionately called a “lovable psycho”, broke one of his front legs while doing zoomies around the lounge.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“He just jumped off the couch and it didn’t look like he landed badly, but he let out an almighty scream and I immediately knew what he’d done.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Romeo will require further corrective surgery on his bow leg. Photo / Givealittle
</p>

<p>
	Italian greyhounds are notorious for fragile legs between 0-18 months, Woodhouse said, “because they think they’re Superman”.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The second break happened as Romeo was recovering from the first.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Woodhouse was at work when she received a call from her housemate saying Romeo “must have got inquisitive”, and knocked over a large painting and taken another tumble.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“He let out another almighty scream.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“I just ran to the car and drove home as fast as I could,” she said.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Romeo had broken his other front leg and required further surgery.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Each surgery costs up to $8500, and X-rays alone are $1100.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“There’s only so much a retiree can do. The well is dry,” Woodhouse said.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Although pet insurance contributed $10,000, it didn’t fully cover even the first break.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Through it all, Romeo remains “the love of my life”.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Woodhouse takes the small pup to her part-time job so she can keep a close eye on him.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“He’s tiny, and people instantly want to cuddle him.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“He just wants to be with you, in the car, on the couch, at work, always.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Romeo still needs corrective surgery for his bow leg from the first fall, and another to remove “a couple of screws and a plate” from the other leg.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	“He’s doing well; it’s been a journey, but he’s a sweet little boy, and people just love him.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The Givealittle page has raised more than $2500 so far.

	Has anyone seen the rehoming outfits moving unwanted greyhounds on, out and about at local Christmas Parades for instance?  If no pressure is being applied, GRNZ owned or subsidised facilities will continue to suck up funds.

	doesn't it seem odd that they still haven't released the report into greyhound racing in nsw.
</p>

<p>
	the governmant and the greyhound administrators would have had the final report for a couple of months now and all the animal welfare groups are saying,if you've got nothing to hide,why can't you just release the report. I understand the parliament has also passed a resolution asking fot the release of the report,but it hasn't happened  so far.
</p>

<p>
	i guess that all means it won't paint the nsw greyhound industry in a good light. Why else take so long to release it.the delay is not a good look
</p>

<p>
	they did make witnesses evidence available during the hearings.
</p>

<p>
	i was going for a walk the other day and a bloke was walking his greyhound and we passed each other. I couldn't help but feeling a bit sad for all the people and dogs who are involved in greyhound racing.
</p>

<p>
	theres a lot of history there as well. Unfortunately i've always thought the closure was inevitable for some years now,given the mass production type business model that the bigger kennels use. Like anything that is big business,they simply got too big and they had too much wastage(actual living dogs) that cost them money.And like anything big scale,its based a lot on profit and you cut your losses without enough consideration of the impact and perception of such behavior.so i've never had much sympathy in that respect,as the industry chose to allow the creation of the issues that lead to it being closed. The injury issue obviously was significant,but i think the industry could have avoided closure had injuries just been the only reason.
</p>

<p>
	i still like to have the odd bet on the australian dogs. i like watching the dogs run. i especially enjoy seeing them thunder down the straight tracks and i wish nz had pivoted to straight track racing long ago. wanganui straight track racing is good to watch But you could tell that was coming all too late, in my opinion.

When that didn’t fly, they just slashed the stake money from 50k down to 30k without telling anyone when its been advertised as 50k from the start of the season.

</p>

<p>
	A bid to stall work on implementing the ban on greyhound racing - pending the outcome of a judicial review - has been denied by the High Court in Wellington.
</p>

<p>
	Last December, Racing Minister Winston Peters announced the sport would be banned in 2026.
</p>

<p>
	In August lawyers for the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) argued to the High Court the work of a ministerial advisory committee - tasked with implementing the ban - should be stopped, until a judicial review of the legislation was heard.
</p>

<p>
	<span style="background-color:transparent; color:#ffffff; font-size:0.05pt; vertical-align:baseline"><a href="https://bitofayarn.com" ipsnoembed="false" rel="external nofollow">https://bitofayarn.com</a></span>
</p>

<p>
	They said the ban would have a devastating effect on the livelihoods of more than 1000 people and the minister had failed to consult with the Racing Integrity Board's (RIB) and to take into account measures to improve animal welfare in the industry.
</p>

<p>
	On Monday Justice Dale La Hood issued his ruling declining the application for interim relief.
</p>

<p>
	He said Cabinet's decision to ban greyhound racing was "not subject to any legal yardsticks" and there was no statutory duty to consult with the RIB.
</p>

<p>
	La Hood said the GRA had failed to make a strong case that the minister was required to go beyond the information provided by the RIB that was presented to Cabinet ahead of the decision. <span style="background-color:transparent; color:#ffffff; font-size:0.05pt; vertical-align:baseline"><a href="https://bitofayarn.com" ipsnoembed="false" rel="external nofollow">https://bitofayarn.com</a></span>
</p>

<p>
	"The executive is not unlawfully implementing the ban without legislative authority by requiring members of greyhound racing clubs to cease greyhound racing while it is still lawful," La Hood concluded.
</p>

<p>
	He said evidence linking the consequences of the ban to the call for the work to be delayed was "weak".
</p>

<p>
	"Although there can be little doubt that participants in the industry are preparing for the fact that Parliament may ultimately enact the proposed legislation, there is no evidence specifically addressing whether the orders now sought (disavowing any attempt to delay the legislative process) would have any material effect on those consequences (logic and common sense would suggest not)," La Hood wrote.

						<p>
							A toddler is lucky to be alive after being attacked, mauled and bitten by dogs roaming an Auckland street.
						</p>

						<p>
							The 2-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries after being bitten on the neck and head by two American bulldogs.
						</p>

						<p>
							Horrific CCTV footage shows the toddler playing just outside their front door when the first dog wanders onto the property.
						</p>
					</div>

					<div>
						<p>
							The dog makes a beeline for the 18-month-old - and goes straight on the attack.
						</p>

						<p>
							The footage, from last year, shows the dog biting and attempting to drag the toddler.
						</p>
					</div>
				</div>
			</div>

			<div>
				<div>
					<div>
						<p>
							The dog is bigger than the child, and moves them across the front yard with ease.
						</p>

						<p>
							A second dog then enters the property and joins the attack.
						</p>
						<span style="background-color:transparent; color:#ffffff; font-size:0.05pt; vertical-align:baseline"><a href="https://bitofayarn.com" ipsnoembed="false" rel="external nofollow">https://bitofayarn.com</a></span>
					</div>

					<div>
						<p>
							This dog is even bigger than the first, and together they push the toddler against a fence before pinning them to the ground.
						</p>

						<p>
							Both dogs maul the child, while other children at the property are too scared to help.
						</p>

						<p>
							Neighbours run onto the property to try and help, but they are unable to pull the two dogs off the toddler.
						</p>

						<p>
							Finally, two grown men arrive and are able to drag the dogs off the child. They struggle to pull the dogs away.
						</p>

						<p>
							The attack lasts for about a minute.
						</p>

						<p>
							The toddler was left with severe injuries - including bites and a fractured shoulder - requiring multiple surgeries and a long hospital stay
						</p>

							‘It is a crisis’: 6500 dogs killed by Auckland Council in just one year
						</h2>
					</div>

					<div>
						<p>
							Last year, 10,000 dogs were impounded in Auckland - the highest number ever. And 6500 dogs were euthanised or put down.
						</p>

						<p>
							Auckland Council’s general manager of compliance, Robert Irvine, said simply: “It is a crisis.”
						</p>

						<p>
							He said mass euthanasia was necessary because the pounds were full, as so few owners came back to claim their dogs.
						</p>
					</div>
				</div>
			</div>

			<div>
				<div>
					<div>
						<p>
							Irvine said the euthanisations “keep the public safe”.
						</p>

						<p>
							“It means we can bring in more roaming dogs, and our ultimate goal is to protect the public.”
						</p>

						<p>
							The council says the dogs are either too dangerous to be adopted out, or people don’t want them.
						</p>

						<p>
							“We don't want to be euthanising dogs. Unfortunately, the shelter capacity is at a maximum,” Irvine said.
						</p>

						<p>
							Auckland Council has proposed reducing the holding period before euthanasia from seven days to five.
						</p>

						<p>
							“It is a very controversial proposal,” Irvine said. “But we are seeing so many dogs unfortunately being euthanised, and there’s a cost to it [keeping them at the pound].”
						</p>

						<p>
							The dogs at the pound include many cute puppies which council staff sadly admit will not find a home, meaning they too will be euthanised
						</p>

						<p>
							<em id="emphasis-32666b7910ea6de063b3b6e4e6394214">Paddy Gower Has Issues</em><span> </span>was shown Auckland’s most dangerous dogs at the pound - including one that was leaping and attacking from within its cage. These dogs are truly frightening.

						</p>

						<p>
							“It's just too easy. A dog will just have litter after litter after litter,” Irvine said.
						</p>

						<p>
							“We've got to reduce the amount of unwanted dogs.”
						</p>

						<p>
							Desexing - preventing dogs from reproducing - is part of the solution.
						</p>

						<p>
							However, a big part of the problem is that Auckland Council does not have the ability to desex the dogs it impounds. It needs the owner’s permission - which is difficult to get.
						</p>

						<p>
							Irvine said this meant many reclaimed dogs were released still able to breed.
						</p>
					</div>
				</div>
			</div>

			<div>
				<div>
					<div>
						<p>
							He believed giving Auckland Council the power for mandatory desexing, and to introduce the five-day euthanisation rule, would require a law change by the Government.
						</p>

						<p>
							Auckland Council said its legal advice was that the Dog Control Act allows councils to set their own bylaws relating to dog control, but does not explicitly say that mandatory desexing for impounded dogs falls within this scope. It meant any bylaw with mandatory desexing could be legally challenged.
						</p>

						<p>
							That meant Auckland Council needed the Government to step in, Irvine said.
						</p>

						<p>
							“This is a crisis. Now we need the Government’s help,” he said.
						</p>

						<p>
							“We need some big changes, including the ability for councils to tackle the de-sexing problem.”
						</p>
					</div>

					<div>
						<h2 style="font-size:1.17em">
							Council and Government at war over dogs
						</h2>
					</div>

					<div>
						<p>
							But the Government has already rejected Auckland Council’s call for new powers.
						</p>

						<p>
							Minister for Local Government Simon Watts released a statement that said: “Councils have the authority to develop dog control bylaws tailored to their local circumstances.”
						</p>
					</div>
				</div>
			</div>

			<div>
				<div>
					<div>
						<p>
							This directly contradicts Auckland Council’s position that a bylaw will not be enough.
						</p>

						<p>
							Watts said he had instead asked the Ministry of Internal Affairs to explore “non-regulatory approaches to support better dog control”.
						</p>

						<p>
							“This includes improving the quality and consistency of dog-related data,” he said.

		Reports emerged from several sources on Saturday that Premier Jeremy Rockliff had agreed to cut funding for the sport at the end of the current funding deed in order to secure the crossbench support to effectively govern the state.<span style="background-color:transparent; color:#ffffff; font-size:0.25pt; vertical-align:baseline"><a href="https://bitofayarn.com" ipsnoembed="false" rel="external nofollow">https://bitofayarn.com</a></span>

	</p>

	<p>
		Rockliff’s Liberal Party only have 14 of the 35 lower house seats, leaving it well short of a majority and needs to enlist the ongoing support of crossbench members in order to continue in power.
	</p>

	<p>
		Several crossbenchers, as well as The Greens, which hold five lower house seats, campaigned on ending greyhound racing in Tasmania ahead of last month’s state election.
	</p>

	<p>
		The withdrawal of support from the government, which contributes around $7.5 million through the funding deed which emanated from the sale of the Tasmanian Tote in 2009, is a virtual death knell for the code.
	</p>

	<div data-google-query-id="CMaszd7I_o4DFeirZgId-JAIYA" id="ad-racing-industry-in-article">
		<div id="google_ads_iframe_/23035539507/racing-industry-in-article_0__container__" style="border:0pt none; text-align:center">
			There are around 150 greyhound meetings held in Tasmania every year across two tracks, Hobart and Launceston, with over 1500 races, which generate $270 million in turnover. That is around 37.5 per cent of the annual turnover across all three codes.
		</div>
	</div>

	<p>
		A loss of greyhound racing would have a significant impact on the $25 million in racing revenue Tasracing currently derives, primarily via wagering fees, as well as the $7.1 million it receives via the Point Of Consumption Tax agreement from the government.
	</p>

	<p>
		Animal welfare advocacy groups, seeking a greyhound racing ban, commissioned studies which have attacked the funding of the sport and questioned the economic benefit of the industry. The code has also had a spate of integrity issues, as well as the recent death of champion greyhound Raider’s Guide.
	</p>

	</figure>

	<p>
		Tasracing has maintained that the code contributes $54 million to the state’s economy.
	</p>

	<p>
		But its attempts to counter the political movement to ban greyhound racing appears to have run afoul of the fickle nature of state politics.
	</p>

	<p>
		While it has not been confirmed that the sport will be banned, as it has been in the ACT and will be in New Zealand, the withdrawal of the proceeds of the funding deed will make it almost impossible to continue past 2029.
	</p>

	<p>
		Neither Tasracing or the Tasmanian government has yet commented or made a formal announcement.
