Alex Cairns of Horse Racing Ireland is preparing to run his first marathon in Málaga to raise funds for Irish Injured Jockeys (IIJ), with donations being accepted via this link. “I've seen up close the dangers involved in racing for riders and witnessed the incredible support they received from Irish Injured Jockeys, so this cause means a lot to me personally,” said Cairns. “Running my first marathon will be a challenge, but it's a small way to give something back and help IIJ continue their vital work.” Cairns is encouraging friends, colleagues and the wider racing community to get behind his fundraising effort, with every contribution helping IIJ support injured jockeys and their families. Hall of Fame rider Don Pierce–one of the leading jockeys of the 1960s and 1970s–died at the age of 89 Oct. 5, according to a National Racing Museum and Hall of Fame post on Thursday afternoon. The news was reported by Pierce's brother, Larry. A native of Clebit, Oklahoma, Pierce rode his first winner at New Mexico's Ruidoso Downs in 1954 before establishing himself on the Southern California circuit. The legendary rider took mounts for top trainers such as Hall of Famers Mesh Tenney, William Molter, Charlie Whittingham and Robert Wheeler. He reached a personal peak in 1973 when he led all jockeys in North America with 32 stakes victories. The post also says that Pierce enjoyed success in New York, where he won a Belmont Park riding title and captured several of Saratoga's most prestigious races, including the Hopeful and Jim Dandy. Pierce won four runnings of California's signature race for older horses, the Big Cap', and posted a pair of Santa Anita Derby wins. He won five consecutive editions of the Los Angeles Handicap (1969 through 1973) as well as five runnings of the Hollywood Oaks and Santa Anita Oaks. He did well at the seaside oval where he won the Del Mar Debutante four times, plus the Del Mar Derby and Del Mar Oaks. Among Pierce's top mounts were Flying Paster, Hill Rise, Quack, Taisez Vous, La Zanzara, Triple Bend, Kennedy Road, Modus Vivendi, Forceten, Minstrel Miss and Princessnesian, with whom he defeated males in the 1968 Hollywood Gold Cup to cap a five-win day. Pierce retired in 1984 with 3,546 wins, including 351 stakes, and purse earnings of $39,018,422. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010. A full-brother to the four-time Group 3 winner Rumstar (Havana Grey) features among three wildcards added to the catalogue for Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, which takes place from Monday, October 12 to Wednesday, October 14. In addition to Rumstar, who has also finished third in both the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes and G1 Flying Five Stakes this season, the Havana Grey colt can count the Listed Rowl Bowl Stakes third Amorim as a full-brother. He will be consigned as lot 963A by Ballyhimikin Stud, along with another of the wildcards in lot 487A, a Blue Point half-brother to the G3 Summer Stakes winner and G1 Cheveley Park Stakes second Flotus (Starspangledbanner). Completing the list of wildcards is a Night Of Thunder filly out of the Fastnet Rock mare Tashoura. Consigned by Ballyvolane Stud and catalogued as lot 994A, she is out of a half-sister to the Group winners Tarawa, Tanaza and Taniyar. A European record, a £28 million spending spree and another blockbuster sale at Tattersalls. Book 1 delivered three days of extraordinary trade, with established powers flexing their muscles and ambitious new players making their mark. Here are seven things we learned at Park Paddocks. 1). Godolphin Spend £28m on 25 Yearlings That's a lot of money, whichever way you look at it. Godolphin's record-breaking £28 million outlay on 25 yearlings represents an extraordinary injection of money back into the bloodstock industry. To put that figure into perspective, it works out at an average of £1.12 million per yearling. Here's what £28 million looks like around the world. US dollars: $37 million Euros: €33.1 million Japanese yen: ¥5.86 billion UAE dirhams: AED 136.1 million Australian dollars: A$53.3 million Whichever currency you use, it's an eye-watering sum. 2). Three Years of Remarkable Consistency Since the 2024 Bonanza The 2024 Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale was widely regarded as an Amo-fuelled bonanza, but perhaps the most striking statistic is just how consistently the market has performed since. For three consecutive years, turnover has exceeded 128 million guineas when private sales are included. This year's total of 128,531,000gns compares to 129,135,000gns in 2025 and 129,648,000gns in 2024. That's a difference of less than 1% between 2024 and 2026. Remarkably, this year's total was achieved with 360 yearlings sold, 46 fewer than last year. The average climbed 12% to 359,420gns, while the median improved by 10% to 230,000gns. Three years, three enormous sales and more than 387 million guineas changing hands. The consistency at the very top of the European yearling market is quite extraordinary. 3). A European Record and a World-Leading Price This week saw a new European record for a yearling colt, with the Norelands-consigned son of Night Of Thunder selling for 4,600,000gns. Not only was it a European record, but it was also the highest price paid for a yearling anywhere in the world this year. 4). The Americans Bought 50+ Yearlings The Americans were out in force at Tattersalls, either signing on the dotted line or playing a significant role as underbidders. Between them, American buyers purchased more than 50 yearlings during Book 1, underlining just how important they have become to the European market. Many will stick around for next week's Book 2, where they'll be joined by another planeload of their compatriots. 5). Could Modern Games Be the Next Stallion to Crack America? American buyers tend to focus on a relatively small group of proven European stallions whose progeny have already enjoyed success in the U.S. They love Lope De Vega, and rightly so. But who will be the next young European stallion to capture their imagination? Modern Games, perhaps? Klaravich Stable and Mike Ryan spent a combined 700,000gns on two of his yearlings during Book 1, securing a colt for 400,000gns and a filly for 300,000gns. You'd think his progeny should excel across the pond next year as well. 6). Night Of Thunder Leads the Heavy Hitters Night Of Thunder topped the stallion standings by aggregate at Tattersalls Book 1, with 22 yearlings selling for a combined 16,310,000gns at an average of 741,364gns. Frankel was hot on his heels with 16 sold for 15,445,000gns, but it was the Juddmonte superstar who led the way on average among the top 10 sires by aggregate, at a remarkable 965,313gns. Hardly surprising, given that Night Of Thunder and Frankel occupy the top two spots in the leading sires' standings in Britain and Ireland this season. 7). Bond Thoroughbreds Have Big Plans Bond Thoroughbreds are making their presence felt at the very top of the European yearling market. Teaming up with Paddy Twomey Racing and Jason Kelly Bloodstock, they went to 1,500,000gns for a Frankel filly, mixing it with the likes of Godolphin, Coolmore, Ace Stud and Blandford Bloodstock at the lofty heights north of a million guineas. They also teamed up with trainers Andrew Balding and Christopher Head for some significant purchases, further underlining their growing ambitions. Watch this space.
