The first British fillies' Classic of the season sees a fairly even split of homebreds versus sales graduates. The latter group features a seven-figure filly–Ylang Ylang–all the way down to a €20,000 purchase in Tamfana. CINDERELLA'S DREAM (GB) Shamardal–Espadrille (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: The Godolphin homebred and second foal out of her winning dam is undefeated in four starts, split evenly between England at two and the United Arab Emirates at three. Last seen taking the Listed Jumeirah 1000 Guineas, the granddaughter of G3 St. Simon S. heroine and G1 Oaks/G1 Coronation Cup-placed High Heeled (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) will attempt to follow in the footsteps of fellow Godolphin filly Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) in parlaying desert form to a victory in the 1000 Guineas. DANCE SEQUENCE (GB) Dubawi (Ire)–Tearless (GB) (Street Cry {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: Another homebred for the boys in blue, the half-sister to German stakes winner Romantic Song (Ire) (Shamardal) already has a win in the G3 Oh So Sharp to her name and she warmed up for this with a runner-up performance in the G3 Nell Gwyn S. this season. Her second dam Playful Act (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) won the G1 Fillies' Mile, and played bridesmaid in the G1 Irish Oaks. DARNATION (IRE) Too Darn Hot (GB)–Monday Monday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) Sales info: The first foal of her dam, the duo did not meet their reserve when €195,000 buy-backs at the Goffs November Sale, with Darnation in utero when offered by The Castlebridge Consignment. Pedigree/form notes: Racing for breeder Newtown Anner Stud, the Karl Burke trainee won the G2 May Hill S. and G3 Prestige Fillies' S. at two. Yet to be seen this season, but connections hold her in high esteem, as she also has entries for the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Oaks, and the Irish equivalent. Burke yard has been hot this year. ELMALKA (GB) Kingman (GB)–Nahrain (GB) (Selkirk) Pedigree/form notes: Her half-brother is the well-traveled multiple Group 1 winner Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), while her dam scored in the GI Flower Bowl Invitational S. Bahr (GB) (Generous {Ire}), Elmalka's granddam, won both the G2 Ribblesdale S. and the G3 Musidora S., and also earned placings in both the Oaks/Irish Oaks and the Flower Bowl. Placed in the G3 Dubai Duty Free S. this year, the Godolphin-bred has a few lengths to find with this bunch, and might be a better autumn prospect. FALLEN ANGEL (GB) Too Darn Hot (GB)–Agnes Stewart (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) Pedigree/form notes: Agnes Stewart won the May Hill S. and was also second in the G1 Fillies' Mile, with Fallen Angel being her most recent produce. Farther back in the family is Group 1 winner Definite Article (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}). The Branton Court Stud-bred will be making her 3-year-old bow on Sunday, but sports solid credentials for this test, as the winners of the G3 Sweet Solera S. on home soil and a victory in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. in Ireland. PORTA FORTUNA (IRE) Caravaggio–Too Precious (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: Another first produce, the Whisperview Trading-bred was kept busy at two, and won the G3 Fillies Sprint S. and G3 Albany S. prior to hitting the board in the G1 Phoenix S. and G1 Moyglare Stud S. However, the relation of Australian Group 2 winner and multiple Group 1-placed Numerian (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) progressed to take the G1 Cheveley Park S. in England, and was also a good second at the end of the year in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. The distance is a question mark, as the Rowley Mile is a much different test than on a flat American course. A talented filly. PRETTY CRYSTAL (IRE) Dubawi (Ire)–Pretty Baby (Ire) (Orpen) Pedigree/form notes: A progressive type out of the Rabbah Bloodstock breeding programme, Pretty Crystal is rounding into form at the right time and is the winner of the G3 Nell Gwyn S. Her dam, the G3 Oak Tree S. heroine Pretty Baby, is kin to group winners Prairie Star (Fr) (Peintre Celebre), Pacific Rim (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}) and that pair's dam, Prairie Runner (Ire) (Arazi). Connections supplemented the chestnut to this race. The last to complete the Nell Gwyn/1000 Guineas double was Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) in 2022. RAMATUELLE Justify–Raven's Lady (Raven's Pass) Sales info: Consigned by Haras de l'Hotellerie, agent, the February-born filly was purchased for €100,000 by Arthur Hoyeau acting on behalf of MyRacehorse, Ecurie des Monceaux, Hollymount Stud and partners out of the Arqana August Yearling Sale in 2022. Pedigree/form notes: Twice a winner at group level, Raven's Lady delivered Ramatuelle as her first offspring. Yeguada Centurion bred the G3 Prix du Bois and G2 Prix Robert Papin heroine, who went on to run Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) to a short neck in the G1 Prix Morny. Second to Romantic Style (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire})–who holds entries in the G1 Commonwealth Cup and G1 Coronation S.–in the G3 Prix Imprudence, the Guineas will be her first start at a mile. REGAL JUBILEE (GB) Frankel (GB)–Regal Realm (GB) (Medicean {GB}) Pedigree/form notes: Cheveley Park Stud bred both Regal Jubilee, and three generations of her damline. Sunday's entrant is already a half-sister to the decorated group winner Regal Reality (GB) (Intello {Ger}), who was third in the Coral-Eclipse, while their dam won a brace of Group 3s. Under the care of John and Thady Gosden, Regal Jubilee won the Listed Montrose Fillies' S. over this course and distance in heavy going in November, and was only a neck behind Folgaria (Ire) (Due Diligence) in the G3 Dubai Duty Free S. last month. A live chance. ROLICA (IRE) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Moteo (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) Sales info: Offered by her breeder Ballylinch Stud, which stands her sire, Rolica was a 320,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling purchase by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock. Pedigree/form notes: Another first foal, this time for the Listed Navigation S. heroine Moteo who placed twice in Irish Group 3s, Rolica is from the same family as dual Group 1 winner and sire Belardo (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). A winner over seven furlongs at Newmarket in April, Rolica is making her stakes debut in this Classic. SACRED ANGEL (IRE) Dark Angel (Ire)–Sacred Aspect (Ire) (Haatef) Sales info: A £52,000 yearling out of the Goffs Premier Sale from Yeomanstown House Stud, the grey was picked up by Manor House Farm. Pedigree/form notes: This is the best foal of seven produce for Listed Tipperary S. heroine Sacred Aspect, who shares a common ancestor with G1 Prix de l'Abbaye winner The Platinum Queen (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}). Bred by Yeomanstown Stud, the grey won the G3 Princess Margaret S. at two and was third in the Cheveley Park S. to Porta Fortuna, but has never been beyond six furlongs. SEE THE FIRE (GB) Sea The Stars (Ire)–Arabian Queen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: Owner Jeff Smith's Littleton Stud bred this daughter of Arabian Queen, who upset Golden Horn (GB) at 50-1 in the 2015 G1 International S. She has already managed to earn black-type when second in the G2 May Hill S. and third in the G1 Fillies' Mile. Her granddam Barshiba (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) won the G2 Lancanshire Oaks twice. Would be a triumph for a smaller owner/breeder, and she can only improve based on her breeding. STAR MUSIC (GB) Zoustar (Aus)–Fast Lily (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) Sales info: This filly blossomed from an 18,000gns buy-back from breeder Plantation Stud as a Tattersalls December foal to 160,000gns Tattersalls Somerville yearling when selected by Richard Hughes Racing. Pedigree/form notes: Her older half-brother Unanimous Consent (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}) won a stakes race on the tough New York circuit in the U.S., and this filly was third to Dance Sequence in the Oh So Sharp S. In the Dubai Duty Free, the relative of group winners Silk Blossom (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) and Mashoora (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) led in the early stages, but faltered late, and that run should have brought her forward. STAR STYLE (GB) Zoustar (Aus)–Sweet Cecily (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) Sales info: Byerley Stud offered this filly at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, where she caught the eye of owner Julie Wood for 47,000gns. Pedigree/form notes: Bred by Mrs. S Clifford, the half-sister to the stakes-placed Sweet Dragon Fly (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) won her only start to date, a seven-furlong Newbury affair. Her dam claimed the Listed Bosra Sham Fillies' S., while third dam Sweet Roberta (Robert) was successful in the GII Selima S. and second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. This is a very steep class hike. TAMFANA (GER) Soldier Hollow (GB)–Tres Magnifique (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) Sales info: Jeremy Brummitt snapped up this filly for a mere snip at €20,000 out of the BBAG September Yearling Sale from co-breeders Gestut Etzean and Hans-Helmut Rodenburg. Pedigree/form notes: The fourth foal out of her dam, she is from the same family as the smart Grade I winner Sea Calisi (Fr) (Youmzain {Ire}). A winner of the G3 Prix Miesque in 2023, the Quantum Leap Racing VIII & Friends-owned filly was a close third in the G3 Prix Imprudence. YLANG YLANG (GB) Frankel (GB)–Shambolic (Ire) (Shamardal) Sales info: The priciest filly in the 1000 Guineas at 1.5 million gns when bought by MV Magnier and Peter Brant's White Birch Farm out of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, Ylang Ylang was offered by Newsells Park Stud. Pedigree/form notes: Her dam was placed three times at stakes level and Ylang Ylang is her first foal. Shambolic is a half-sister to the high class Hong Kong runner Comic Strip (GB) (Marju {Ire}), and dual Grade I winner Laughing (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). Even if Saturday's Newmarket Classic had a major twist in store, it was all about one horse beforehand whereas Sunday's G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas is open season especially given the way the Spring has gone for the Classic fillies. How will the likes of TDN Rising Star Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) have fared during the wet and cold weeks leading up to this test? Many starlets have come here in the past with impeccable form credentials only to be lost in the crowd and the truth is we will only know when the contest is decided. Ylang Ylang already has one flop on her record, having overdone it in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. but two starts later she was redeemed with a win in the G1 Fillies' Mile over this course and distance. It is hard not to feel that the absent Opera Singer (Justify) would have been Ballydoyle's first choice and there is the chance that this will represent too much of a speed test for her. “We think she'll stay further having won over a mile last year, but this was always where she was going to start,” Aidan O'Brien said. “She stayed on well, so we think she'll be staying on strongly.” Angel Ready For Flight… Fallen Angel had the subsequent G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Porta Fortuna (Ire) (Caravaggio) well beaten in the Moyglare and is the chief Karl Burke representative despite the credentials of Newtown Anner Stud Farm's G2 May Hill S. and G3 Prestige S. winner Darnation (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}). “The mile holds no qualms, she should improve for the mile,” Burke said of Fallen Angel. “She'll probably stay further, to be honest. We think we're going to arrive there in good form. We've been lucky enough to win the French Oaks, we've been second in the English Derby and second in the 1000 Guineas with Laurens, so it would be fantastic to add a British Classic to the CV.” Fallen Angel's jockey Danny Tudhope added, “I rode her in a racecourse gallop at the Craven meeting and she impressed me. She galloped with a sprinter and we went quick, but she picked him up very easily and then dossed when we got half a length up, which is just her.” Two To The Dance… Charlie Appleby has yet to win this, but following Saturday's action will arrive with confidence high in his pair of solid chances. The G3 Oh So Sharp S. winner and G3 Nell Gwyn S. runner-up Dance Sequence (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is the clear number one ahead of the Listed Jumeirah 1000 Guineas scorer Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal), but she has to turn around a neck defeat by Pretty Crystal (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) from her seven-furlong prep. “Dance Sequence had a nice trial in the Nell Gwyn, where she still showed her rawness,” her trainer said. “With the step up to a mile and the experience she gained there I'm very confident she's going to be running a big race. Cinderella's Dream is four from four and gave us some entertainment at Meydan in the winter, where William had to take his feet out of the irons for half of the race but she showed her class in what she achieved. She's a tough little filly and she definitely deserves to be in the line-up.” Burgeoning Star? Julie Wood is a longstanding owner for the Hannons and a win for her live outsider Star Style (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) would be well received. With only an impressive win in a seven-furlong debutantes affair at Newbury to her name, she will have it tough here but her trainer is expecting a bold show. “We are throwing her in at the deep end, without question, but whenever her owner Julie Wood has a chance of winning a big race she'll take it with both hands,” he said. “How she'll handle the track is unknown, but if she does she'll run a big race. She is a monster. She's massive, but she's quite elegant and quite adaptable.” The Support Acts… Newmarket's card also features the G2 Dahlia S., where the 2023 Listed Pretty Polly S. winner Running Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion) is tackled by Godolphin's G2 Cape Verdi scorer Silver Lady (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). This year's Pretty Polly, which is an important Oaks trial, features Juddmonte's 10-length course-and-distance handicap winner Kalpana (GB) (Study Of Man {Ire}) and a clutch of unexposed Epsom hopefuls including Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum's Lunar Eclipse (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}). Down in trip to the one-turn mile after trying nine furlongs in his two most recent appearances, SEIZE THE GREY (c, 3, Arrogate–Smart Shopping, by Smart Strike) took advantage of a lightning-quick pace up ahead of him an plugged on gamely through the final sixteenth of a mile to cause a 9-1 upset in Saturday's GII Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs. Between horses through an opening quarter in :22.12, Seize the Grey dropped back a spot or two as the half, cut out by 'TDN Rising Star' Vlahos (Kantharos), went in :44.59. Just in behind the leaders turning for home with the pace very much still on, Seize the Grey bumped with an outside rival, and therefore went for an inside run into the final furlong. Vlahos battled on gamely despite the taxing fractions, but ultimately he ran out of steam as Seize the Grey edged past in the dying strides. After a close tussle, Jack Kennedy earned his first Irish Champion Jockey title, just edging out Paul Townend, who was aiming for his seventh year-end award. Edited Press Release The morning after Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) won the GI Kentucky Oaks, trainer Ken McPeek is mulling over a chance for his filly to run in the fast-approaching GI Preakness S. Outside his barn, he also reported that the 3-year-old who splashed home a convincing winner on Friday in the Oaks came out of the race in fine shape. “She left a little bit of grain last night, about half a scoop, but it's nothing to be worried about,” McPeek said. “It's something we watch regularly, and she typically eats up every night. She's tired. She ran hard.” The Kentucky-based conditioner is weighing Thorpedo Anna's options. One avenue would be to take on the boys at Pimlico, but he indicated that's probably not likely, at least as of the morning after the Oaks. McPeek did saddle 2020 Preakness winner Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil). “We're gonna look at the Preakness, but she's gonna have to show us in the next three or four days,” he said. “We'll get some clarity. There are some fees ($150,000) involved. Probably, at this point, it's less than 50 percent.” He added that he is looking forward to some stakes possibilities in New York. “I'll see what the calendar says for 3-year-old fillies,” McPeek said. “You don't want to run her back in the Black Eyed Susan. Where do you find Grade I races for 3-year-old fillies? I definitely want to get her in the Coaching Club Oaks, Alabama, the Acorn, races like that. The Acorn is a 1 1/8 at Saratoga, so that seems like an ideal spot. There's a lot of math to do.” Trainer Bill Mott reported that all appeared to be good with reigning juvenile filly champion Just F Y I (Justify) following her runner-up effort in the Kentucky Oaks. “We haven't had her out this morning but initially she looks good,” said Mott. “I thought everything looked fine. She'll go to Saratoga next, I don't know what we're going to run her in next, but that's where she's going. A running-on second to Alva Starr (Lord Nelson) when making her seasonal return in Keeneland's GI Madison S. Apr. 6, VAHVA (f, 4, Gun Runner–Holiday Soiree, by Harlan's Holiday) was the 8-5 favorite to reverse form with that rival in Saturday's GI Derby City Distaff S. at Churchill Downs and clawed past late for her first win at the elite level. NEWMARKET, UK — They came for a coronation and perhaps, when we look back at the end of the season, that's what those packed into the stands and around Newmarket's vast parade ring will have seen. The crown now just rests on a different head to the one we were expecting. Those who don't appreciate the blustery open swathes of the Rowley Mile are quick to knock the course, but over that same strip last October there had been a truly stellar performance in the Dewhurst by City Of Troy (Justify), who duly hogged the top of the betting market all winter. His reappearance, up until the second he was visibly struggling at around halfway, undoubtedly added to the numbers through the gates and a vibrancy on course for the most anticipated running of the 2,000 Guineas since Frankel's year. The buzz abounded, though City Of Troy himself was apparently unfazed as he wandered quietly, first one in, round and round the pre-parade ring as gradually his rivals arrived to be saddled. There were days when the all-weather racing through the winter was for the lesser Flat runners and a diversion for those fans who don't love the jumps, while the more exalted horses 'wintered well' in anticipation of the Classic trials. Fifteen years ago Ghanaati (Giant's Causeway) poured scorn on the idea that Guineas winners must have had a prep run on turf, but her two prior wins, both at Kempton on the Polytrack, had come during her two-year-old season. Notable Speech (GB), who ripped through the field to give his sire Dubawi (Ire) a fourth winner of the 2,000 Guineas, had done all his winning before Saturday at Kempton too, but he hadn't even been seen in public until January 27, then again a month later, before completing his all-weather hat-trick in early April. Primed to the minute with recent match practice under his belt, including a crucial racecourse gallop at Newmarket, he is a colt for whom the two-year-old races came too early. Now having very much filled his frame, the burly chestnut colt has not just caught up with his contemporaries but has left them wondering which way he went. Once the horses had filed into the parade ring, Aisling Appleby, wife of the soon-to-be winning trainer, positioned herself just outside with their four children. The smallest, Sean, had to be propped up on the rail to see the runners filing past and loyally proclaimed that 'Jockey William' was his favourite rider. William Buick is indeed the reigning champion but he wasn't on the favourite. Notable Speech, at 16/1, had not figured in many conversations coming into the race beyond the walls of Godolphin. While Sean wriggled and turned his attention towards a visit to the on-course sweet shop, Aisling said that she had been planning to bring the children racing on Sunday. “Bring them today,” her husband Charlie had insisted. The sweets would have to wait: there were family photos on the winner's podium to be taken first. Who knows what private mental turmoil trainers endure when things aren't going quite to plan, but Appleby's breezy demeanour seems never to falter. He was champion trainer in Britain in 2021 and 2022 but there followed, by his standards, a more lacklustre season last year. As the sun finally deigned to shine on Newmarket Heath this, then, was just the kind of reboot he was seeking, following Group 1 success in Dubai with Rebel's Romance (Ire) and two trial victories courtesy of Derby hopeful Arabian Crown (Fr) and Romantic Style (Ire). “I'm very lucky to be in the position I am. I have no pressure,” he said as he was engulfed by the press before his second winner of the 2,000 Guineas had even returned to the enclosure. “We're just asked to do the best we can and sometimes you can't turn a sow's ear into a silk purse, but with the horses we've got now we've got a great chance of getting back to the top table.” Of his colt, the sole locally-trained representative in the 11-strong field, he continued, “You don't very often see Classic winners come off the all-weather. I recall back in August one of the lads sat on him and said he was a nice horse but then he went weak and he wasn't ready to pull out and run. Thankfully he's done what he was supposed to do through the course of the winter and we brought him out in the new year and he hasn't looked back since.” Recalling a recent gallop for Notable Speech under 60-year-old former jockey Paul Eddery, Appleby added, “He got off him and said, 'He stays a mile and the favourite will have to be good to beat him.' From that moment on, I've just been trying to keep a lid on it.” He's been sprung now, and Appleby will doubtless spend must of the rest of the season answering queries about his latest Classic winner, who brings his tally in Britain to five. He has a long way to go to catch the man who earlier in the afternoon had been inducted into the British Champions Series Hall of Fame. Aidan O'Brien had said in an interview last week in TDN that he stays up late on the good days and heads to bed early on the bad ones. This is one result he will want to forget, and he doubtless felt similar on this day last year after Auguste Rodin (Ire) posted a disappointing return in the Guineas. LOUISVILLE, KY-Sharp as a razor exiting the far gate, Clark Brewster and William and Corinne Heiligbrodt's Cogburn (Not This Time) wasted not time dusting off the cobwebs, coming home a 2 1/4-length winner in the GII Twin Spires Turf Sprint early on Saturday's Derby Day card. Given an 8-1 chance will making his 2024 debut, the 5-year-old broke in front but allowed Coppola (Into Mischief) and Mo Stash (Mo Town) to show the way through a :22.61 opening quarter over a course labeled 'good'. Taking a slight edge from the outside coming out of the far turn, Cogburn lost some ground as Coppola cut the corner in front turning for home, but the Steve Asmussen trainee was clearly best on the day, drawing clear to score comfortably over Filo Di Arianna (Brz) (Drosselmeyer). Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) closed to grab third. “He was sharp, [Asmussen] had him ready today,” said winning rider Irad Ortiz Jr. “The way he broke, Steve told me he was ready. He was running so good, there was no stopping him.” Graded placed on the dirt, Cogburn took four of seven starts last season, highlighted by three consecutive wins when switching to the turf in Lone Star's Chamberlain Bridge S., Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint and the GIII Troy S. in Saratoga. 'TDN Rising Star' MINDFRAME (c, 3, Constitution–Walk of Stars, by Street Sense), a dominating 13 3/4-length winner of his seven-furlong debut on the Florida Derby undercard at Gulfstream Park Mar. 30, handled his first two-turn assignment with aplomb, cruising home the easiest of winners in Churchill allowance company Saturday morning. The familiar colours of Waikato Stud were part of a remarkable finish at Hawkesbury on Saturday as Fall For Cindy dead-heated for first in the A$160,000 The Lawn Shed Benchmark 88 Handicap (1400m). There was only half a length separating the first five horses across the line, with Fall For Cindy and apprentice jockey Jett Stanley finishing strongly out of the pack to join in a blanket finish across the track. Trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy, the three-year-old filly was on the quick seven-day backup after finishing third in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) seven days prior. Having stepped cleanly from the barriers, Jamie Kah took her time to get Coco Sun (+400) towards the front of the field, and could not have landed a better spot, on the heels of race leader Air Assault (+3300) leaving the home straight. Coco Sun managed to stalk the leader throughout and despite a majority of rivals making their move approaching the home turn, Kah bided her time perfectly and turning for home, Coco Sun kicked clear. Warmonger (+550) made up a stack of ground from the rear of the field, with Air Assault sticking on for third. The three-year-old gelding trained by Gary Portelli took his earnings to upwards of $700,000 with Saturday’s success, aided by a gun ride from young Cejay Graham. The pair jumped cleanly enough from the barriers to take advantage of barrier two when landing the box seat throughout. Kintyre (+800) was racing well within himself as he approached the home turn, and as Captain Fenkel (+4000) started to fade, Kintyre and eventual runner-up Razors (+1300) staked their claim with 300m to go. In a back-and-forth tussle, it was Cejay Graham who stuck closer to the inside that got the better of Razors in a driving finish, with Press Link (+600) finishing off well into third.
