Riverton trainer Ebony Turner had intended on having a two-pronged attack in Saturday’s Listed NZB Insurance Stakes (1600m) at Riccarton, but she is happy to just have the sole representative in Caffeinated (NZ) (Belardo) following the recent sale of her stable star Drakaina (NZ) (Ace High). Turner purchased the daughter of Ace High as an untried two-year-old off breeder The Oaks Stud on gavelhouse.com for just $3,000, and the now bargain buy has put her former owner-trainer on the map. Drakaina won two of her five starts for Turner, including the Listed NZB Airfreight Stakes (1400m) at Wingatui last month after finishing runner-up in the Listed Dunedin Guineas (1500m) at the same track a month prior. Turner fielded plenty of calls from prospective buyers following the victory and a deal was brokered, with the filly set to continue her racing career in Western Australia. “It was incredible the win she had at Dunedin and then to be approached by the bloodstock agents and get it over the line to send her over to Bob Peters in Perth was pretty exciting stuff,” Turner said. “It was sad at the same time because she is part of the family, but at the end of the day it is a business and you can’t turn down that sort of money when you have got a horse of that calibre that people are wanting to have a go with. “She holds a special place in my heart forever.” While her stable is now down one exciting filly, Turner is looking forward to giving another in Caffeinated her opportunity to shine this weekend. “I have always rated Caffeinated pretty highly so I thought I would give her a chance at getting some black-type,” Turner said. Caffeinated put in a pleasing performance to break through for her maiden victory two starts back before she put in a sub-par unplaced run on an unsuitable Heavy10 track at Riverton. “Her win was incredible, she just got the perfect trip and flew home. I was really pleased with that,” Turner said. “Unfortunately, at Riverton she didn’t handle the track conditions at all, so we have just put a line through that race. “She has come through the run really well, her work at home has been exceptional, and she looks incredible – she is thriving and she is eating everything. “It will be quite interesting to see how she fronts up against those classy fillies and it will give us a good gauge on how she will go in her four-year-old season.” This week will be Caffeinated’s longest trip from home, however, it doesn’t pose any concern for Turner. “She is a good traveller. She is a wee professional and not a lot worries her,” she said. “I am not too concerned about that (travel) and we are heading up tomorrow (Thursday) so she can have a nice, easy day on Friday before she races on Saturday. It is good to see that she is later on in the afternoon too, so I am sure she will bounce back from the travel no worries.” Caffeinated has drawn barrier seven and will be ridden by Krishna Mudhoo. “I am really happy with the draw,” Turner said. “I was a bit concerned if she were to draw wide, what we would do from there. From seven she can hopefully get a nice, soft run three or four off the leader and get some clean air down the straight, and hopefully it all works out for her.” Caffeinated joined Turner’s care at the same time as Drakaina, and she is hoping she too can become a stakes winner this weekend. “She is on lease from Haunui Farm,” Turner said. “I got her on lease and then I ended up buying Drakaina on the next Gavelhouse auction so they could come down together and have a travel buddy. It worked out very well.” Saturday will likely be Caffeinated’s last of the season and Turner is excited about her prospects as a four-year-old. “I think she will go out for a spell after Saturday,” she said. “She has had a pretty big prep and she hasn’t done anything wrong, so I think she deserves a wee freshen and we will go from there.” Stablemate The Advisor (NZ) (Zacinto) will join Caffeinated on the float trip north following her pleasing runner-up result at Ascot Park on Sunday, and will contest the Angus “Schawsey” Schaw 30th Fizzer Rating 65. “The Advisor raced so well at Invercargill the other day that she got herself a ticket to come as a travel buddy and have a crack at some bigger money up at Riccarton,” Turner said. “She has drawn very wide (21), which is unfortunate, she is going to need a lot of luck from there. “There is about 40ml of rain forecast for Thursday and Friday up there. I am hoping that comes as I see the track is a Good3 at the moment (Wednesday morning), which I don’t think she will appreciate that much. “If the rain comes and she gets a nice, soft run I think she will be competitive. But it is going to be a big task for her on Saturday.” View the full article

A trip to the Queensland winter carnival is in the mix for progressive mare Imwonderfultonight (I Am Invincible) and she could firm up plans with another strong showing this weekend. While the venture is yet to be confirmed, the daughter of I Am Invincible would offer a compelling argument if she runs up to expectations in the Listed City of Napier Sprint (1200m) at Otaki on Saturday. “She’s definitely going to the broodmare paddock in the spring and probably won’t race in New Zealand again after this weekend,” trainer Sam Mynott said. “We could send her to Brisbane for a small stint and we’ll assess that after her run on Saturday. “We’re taking each day as it comes before we decide what we do next. There are options over there for her, two or three stakes races that would suit her, but we’ll see how she goes here first.” Raced by strong supporters Windsor Park Stud and Ben Kwok, Imwonderfultonight has come a long way in a short time since joining Mynott’s Cambridge operation. “She has been so consistent and she hasn’t let us down at all, she’s been super,” she said. “She has gone from winning a maiden, a Rating 65 to stepping up to Listed level and running fourth in a Telegraph (Gr.1, 1200m).” Imwonderfultonight will head to Otaki with five top four finishes in stakes company from her last six appearances, including a second in the Listed Stewards Stakes (1200m) and thirds in the Gr.3 Concorde Handicap (1200m) and most recently in the Listed Lightning Handicap (1200m). The only blemish in the five-year-old’s form line was an out of character failure in the Gr.1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m). “We rode her back that day and it didn’t suit her. She didn’t breathe from the get-go, and it hadn’t been a problem before or after that, we let her race a bit more on the pace and she’s happy,” Mynott said. She is currently working a team of 25 from a leased property adjacent to the Cambridge track. “That’s nice and easy and I’ve got breakers and pre-trainers and around 10 racehorses in full work at the moment,” Mynott said. She has also ridden over jumps in recent seasons and from limited rides won aboard Mondorani (NZ) (Burgundy) at Rotorua last winter, but won’t be adding to that tally in the foreseeable future. “Rod (Schick, Windsor Park) put a firm foot down and I said if he keeps sending me horses like this to train then I’ll listen to him,” Mynott said. “I obviously ride most of my work, but I have always said I wouldn’t give up training for riding over the fences. “The business has gone a whole step ahead and I’ve got plenty of horses in the stable so that is definitely the main focus.” View the full article

Ascot Park trainer Tommy Beckett has had plenty of highlights in his three decades of training, but the pinnacle came a fortnight ago when Miss Pearl (NZ) (Tavistock) won at Riverton. It wasn’t the status of the race that stood out for Beckett, but the emotion of seeing his 15-year-old granddaughter Riley Beckett lead in the five-year-old mare following her victory at the Southland meeting. Beckett said the pair have formed a great bond and seeing his granddaughter’s passion for the horse has revitalised his enthusiasm for racing. “My granddaughter is deeply in love with the horse, and the horse loves her too, so that makes a difference,” Beckett said. “She is the first horse Riley has had anything to do with in her life. When she won at Riverton the owner said she better go down and lead her in and she was crying her eyes out. “She has got her stablehand ticket and my grandson, who is 17, helps out as well. They have shown a great interest in the horse. It is great and we need more young people in the industry.” Beckett has experienced a great ride with Miss Pearl of late, with the mare having placed in her prior two starts, including a runner-up performance in the $200,000 Southern Mile Final (1600m), which qualified her for Saturday’s $350,000 TAB Southern Alps Challenge (1600m) at Riccarton. She heads into the race in winning form and Beckett is hoping Riley can lead their mare back to the winner’s stall following Saturday’s contest. “Riley is leaving on Thursday with us. We are not allowed to leave without her,” Beckett said. “She (Miss Pearl) went really well that day in the Southern Mile (final),” Beckett said. “I have always thought a lot of her, but she surprised me a wee bit (in the Southern Mile Final) and then she went to the races at Riverton and went well against the fillies and mares, so that was even better. “She has eaten up and done everything right. We just hope that we get a bit of rain and by the sound of it we are going to get some.” Beckett has won 80 races, including seven at stakes level, in his training career to date, three of which were recorded by Miss Pearl’s dam Miss Three Stars (NZ) (Perfectly Ready). The daughter of Perfectly Ready won 11 races and more that $300,000 for Beckett, with her career highlights being victories in the Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m) at Riccarton, and two editions of the Listed Riverton Cup (2147m), while she also placed in the Gr.3 Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m). “Miss Three Stars was a very good horse,” Beckett said. “Her mother was Missy who was a really good mare too (winning seven races, including the Listed South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes and runner-up in the Listed Winter Classic). It is a good family.” Beckett is looking forward to racing for $350,000 this weekend and said the rich innovation race has been a tonic for South Island trainers. “It is unbelievable what they have done,” he said. “It gives the South Island people a lot more money than what we usually race for. It has got people more interested in getting a galloper, especially to go over a mile.” Beckett is hoping to press on with his mare following Saturday’s contest, with the ultimate goal being a return to Riccarton in the new season to try and replicate Miss Three Stars’ success in the Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m). “We will just see how she gets over this one, but her mother won the Winter Cup in 2016, so we are thinking a bit that way,” Beckett said. What Sunshine Coast Races Where Sunshine Coast Turf Club – 170 Pierce Ave, Caloundra QLD 4551 When Friday, April 12, 2024 First Race 6pm AEST Visit Dabble Sunshine Coast Turf Club will host a very competitive seven-race card this Friday evening. At the time of acceptances, the track was rated as a Heavy 9; however, with no rain forecast on Thursday and Friday, it is expected that the surface will improve into the Soft range by race day. The rail will go back into the true position, with the first race scheduled to jump at 6pm AEST. Best Bet at Sunshine Coast: Rashford Rashford has finished second in his last two starts this preparation and appears ready to win third-up. Although the Chris Munce-trained gelding finished behind Kalends at Doomben over 1650m last time out, he defeated the rest of his rivals by three lengths. Now that he is at peak fitness and meets a weaker field than his previous runs, Rashford should be able to break his maiden at the sixth time of asking. Best Bet Race 1 – #4 Rashford (5) 3yo Gelding | T: Chris Munce | J: Kyle Wilson-Taylor (58kg) Bet with Picklebet Next Best at Sunshine Coast: Great Aspirations Great Aspirations has won two of his last three races, including a last-start victory over 1200m at Ipswich where the Tony Gollan-trained galloper careered away late as a well-backed favourite. Although the four-year-old gelding has to carry 60kg, he handles wet ground, and from barrier eight, Ryan Maloney should be able to settle midfield off the fence. Staying in Class 3 grade, Great Aspirations should prove hard to beat. Next Best Race 3 – #2 Great Aspirations (8) 4yo Gelding | T: Tony Gollan | J: Ryan Maloney (60kg) Bet with Neds Best Value at Sunshine Coast: Rudimentary Rudimentary may only have one win to his name from 28 starts, but he meets a field with similar or lesser credentials here. The Stephen Sutherland-trained gelding beat all bar the impressive Man Of Heart on March 31 over the Sunshine Coast 2000m, although he was 5.3 lengths adrift of the winner. With little to no speed in this 1800m contest, Michael Hellyer will take Rudimentary to the front and run the race to suit himself. Best Value Race 7 – #9 Rudimentary (2) 6yo Gelding | T: Stephen Sutherland | J: Michael Hellyer (54kg) Bet with PlayUp Friday quaddie tips for the Sunshine Coast Sunshine Coast quadrella selections Friday, April 12, 2024 2-3-4-5-6 2-3-4-7-8 1-5-7-14 2-3-9 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

What Cranbourne Races Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977 When Friday, April 12, 2024 First Race 5:15pm AEST Visit Dabble Friday night racing in Victoria heads to Cranbourne once again, where an eight-race card is scheduled. The track came up a Soft 6 at the time of acceptances, while the rail comes out 9m for the entire circuit. The first race is set to jump at 5:15pm AEST. Best Bet at Cranbourne: Bold Response Julius Sandhu’s Bold Response returned with a dominant all-the-way victory at the Cranbourne 1000m. Heading back to the track and trip in search of a fifth career win, the four-year-old gelding will need to be sharp out of the gates from barrier 10. If Logan Bates can find the rail or, at worst, be outside lead, the apprentice’s 3kg claim looks to be a massive advantage for Bold Response in this BM64 assignment. Best Bet Race 5 – #1 Bold Response (10) 4yo Gelding | T: Julius Sandhu | J: Logan Bates (a3) (62.5kg) Bet with Neds Next Best at Cranbourne: Jessup Shawn Mathrick’s Jessup has put together two handy victories in succession. Having been forced to travel wide with no cover at the Cranbourne 1200m on March 29, he got the job done by the barest of margins and looked good in doing so. The son of Epaulette gets in perfectly with 56kg on his back, and if Logan Bates can find cover close to the speed, Jessup’s weight advantage should prove beneficial in the concluding stages. Next Best Race 8 – #5 Jessup (9) 4yo Gelding | T: Shawn Mathrick | J: Logan Bates (a3) (59kg) Bet with Picklebet Next Best Again at Cranbourne: Think Rock Think Rock produced a career-best performance on his debut for Julius Sandhu’s stable when narrowly defeated at the Pakenham 1000m on March 3. In five prior starts for the Ken & Kasey Keys barn, he could muster no better than a fifth-place finish. He produced a strong turn of foot from the rear of the field on that day, and despite staying at the 1000m scamper second-up, Think Rock should prove too slick in this maiden. Best Value Race 3 – #3 Think Rock (5) 4yo Gelding | T: Julius Sandhu | J: Jamie Mott (59kg) Bet with Dabble Friday quaddie tips for Cranbourne races Cranbourne quadrella selections Friday, April 12, 2024 1-6 1-2-6-7 2-6-9-12 5-6 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

Cranbourne is set to host Saturday night racing in 2025. (Photo by Ross Holburt/Racing Photos) Southside Racing is gearing up to trial four Saturday night meetings at Cranbourne in the upcoming racing calendar. These meetings will feature up to eight races and are likely to commence before the last metropolitan race on the same day. The trial is scheduled to kick off in late December and extend into three Saturday nights in January. “We’re really excited about the opportunity to run Saturday nights,” expressed Southside Racing CEO Neil Bainbridge to Racing.com. “We’ve been a big supporter of it and have been looking for the opportunity now for a couple of years.” “Racing Victoria has given us four Saturday nights in a row, so we can get some really good data and try and prove the concept,” he continued. “Those Saturday nights have been earmarked for the last Saturday night in December and the first three Saturday nights in January.” “So you’re talking about absolutely prime time in the southeast for community and customer engagement,” Bainbridge emphasised. “From our point of view, we probably see those meetings starting around 5:30 pm, something like that. “Ideally, for us, we think the right timing is between the last and second-last at the meeting at one of the three metropolitan tracks.” Horse racing news View the full article

Queen Elizabeth Stakes favourite Via Sistina. Photo: RacingNSW European import Via Sistina continues to lead the betting as the $2.40 favourite for Saturday’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick, having drawn barrier five of 11 in the weight-for-age Group 1. The Chris Waller-trained mare impressed with a comfortable victory in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on her Australian debut last month, piloted by James McDonald, who retains the mount for this weekend. All-Star Mile (1600m) victor Pride Of Jenni secured barrier three, while Godolphin’s recent Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) champion Cascadian will start from gate six. “He’s a remarkable, outstanding racehorse. To do what he’s done and what he’s achieved over a period of time… he’s been competing at the highest level all the way through since he came to Australia,” remarked Godolphin representative Darren Beadman regarding the nine-year-old. “He’s giving everyone a lot of cheek… he certainly doesn’t show his age, he’s such a competitor and a team favorite for everyone.” 2024 Queen Elizabeth Stakes Final Field 1. Foxy Frida ridden by Billy Egan returns to the mounting yard after winning at Bendigo. (Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Ballarat-based trainer Andrew Noblet has disclosed plans to convene with Foxy Frida’s connections following the mare’s draw of barrier 15 for the upcoming Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Randwick this Saturday. In light of this draw, Foxy Frida’s owners face a pivotal decision: whether to proceed with the $1 million Group 1 event or redirect her to Bendigo for the Listed Golden Mile (1600m) on the same day. This choice looms after her recent eighth-place finish in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m). “She’s going very well, she worked great, she gets to what I think is her pet distance, a mile,” stated Noblet to Racing.com. “It’s just a shame we have to overcome a wide gate, that’s all. “She’s in the Chairman’s sale in May, that is the ultimate thing we’re trying to do, get her Group 1-placed or win one with her, but we’re running out of time, put it that way.” 2024 Queen of The Turf Stakes Final Field 1. When the dust settled at the close of the Fasig-Tipton April Digital Sale Tuesday evening, the 15-year-old broodmare Eileen's Dream (Bernardini, hip 21) held the new record for a single offering on the digital platform when she sold for $660,000 to DJ Stable. Consigned by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, Eileen's Dream sold with her 2024 colt by Curlin at her side. She was bred back to Charlatan Mar. 27. The sale closed with 87 horses sold for $4,274,300, an average of $49,130. The clearance rate was 92.5% with 670 registered bidders. A total of 20 horses sold for $50,000 or more. “We had extremely spirited bidding throughout the sale, especially as it closed this afternoon,” said Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton's Director of Digital Sales. “The clearance rate was over 90% again. We're very happy with the results for our buyers and sellers.” Eileen's Dream has a 2-year-old filly by War Front and a yearling colt by Curlin, who sold for $600,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale to John Stewart and has since been named Stable Boy. She is also the granddam of 2023 GII Saratoga Special S. winner Rhyme Schemes (Ghostzapper). The Fasig-Tipton Digital topper is a half-sister to MGISW Dream Rush (Wild Rush), dam of Broodmare of the Year Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy). The latter has produced dual champion Malathaat (Curlin) and GSW Julia Shining. “Anytime you have the opportunity to secure a nice-looking mare from this family, you have to seriously consider it,” said DJ Stable's Jon Green. “She's got the looks, conformation, female family, broodmare sire, and foal pipeline to be a 'foundation mare' for our program. This is a mare that my dad [Leonard Green] particularly wanted. He loves the family and is excited to have a mare and foal like this.” Prior to Tuesday's sale, Fasig-Tipton Digital's previous record was held by the broodmare Amazonian (Malibu Moon), who was purchased for $420,000 by KatieRich Farms from the consignment of Ballysax Bloodstock, agent for the Estate of Glen Todd, during the Glen Todd Dispersal Final Phase in September of 2022. The Fasig-Tipton Digital platform launched in March of 2022. Rounding out the top five sold Tuesday were: Gray Lightning (Social Inclusion, hip 6), a racing/broodmare prospect sold for $370,000 to NRCLUB LLC from the consignment of Full Servis Equine, agent. A lightly raced 3-year-old Pennsylvania-bred, Gray Lightning has a record of two wins and one second from three starts at two and three and earnings of $76,720. Secret Love (Not This Time, hip 22), a broodmare prospect sold for $310,000 to Steven W. Young, agent, from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Secret Love is a stakes winner from her sire's first crop. Charlie's Penny (Race Day, hip 20), a racing/broodmare prospect sold for $260,000 to Steven W. Young, agent, from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Lothenbach Stables Complete Dispersal. Minnesota-bred Charlie's Penny is a multiple stakes winner with a record of seven wins, two seconds, and two thirds from 15 career starts and earnings of $413,272 to date. R Calli Kim (Revolutionary, hip 11), a broodmare prospect sold for $220,000 to Resolute Bloodstock from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. A multiple graded stakes winner, R Calli Kim won GIII The Very One S. at Gulfstream Park in her most recent start. She earned $635,640 in her career, with nine wins from 15 starts. Fresh off a yet another win in the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland, trainer Chad Brown joined the TDN Writers' Room podcast presented by Keeneland to offer up insight on Sierra Leone's definitive victory and share how he hopes to see the $2.3-million son of Gun Runner progress from here. Brown was this week's Green Group Guest of the Week. While Sierra Leone's come-from-behind Blue Grass win was one of the more visually impressive Kentucky Derby preps of the year, the race left plenty of room for improvement for the colt going forward when he proved to be a handful for the Keeneland gate crew while loading. “As the pace was moving along at a solid rate and I saw the horse moving up down the backside, I felt pretty good,” Brown said. “The only anxious moment was when he was loading into the gate. I didn't see that coming. He's been a pretty straightforward horse. When we inherited the outside post with the 11 scratching, he was the last one to load in there… and he just kept looking at that crowd. It's been something with this horse, he always kind of wants to look right. You know, you saw in the GII Remsen S. when he was kind of acting green, and he still wants to lean in a little bit when he passed that horse on Saturday.” Chad Brown Joins the TDN Writers' Room from Thoroughbred Daily News on Vimeo. Saturday's win marked Brown's third Blue Grass score, following the success of juvenile champion Good Magic (Curlin) in 2018 and Zandon (Upstart) in 2022. That pair went on to run second and third, respectively, in the GI Kentucky Derby. Brown said that he believes Sierra Leone will give him his best shot to date to get that first Derby score. “This horse really looks like he's looking for the mile and a quarter,” said Brown. “Yes he's going to have to pass a lot of horses, but it looks like it'll be a good pace and hopefully if he can just get a clear run and uses his big stride, he would be the best chance we've had in this race.” Later in our breeding spotlight section, we took a look at the Coolmore stallion Maximum Security and WinStar stallion Independence Hall. We also welcomed a new sponsor, Pleasant Acres Stallions in Ocala, Florida, which is home to stallions like Doppelganger and Simplification. Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders' Association, West Point Thoroughbreds, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and XBTV.com, the team of Randy Moss, Bill Finley and T.D. Thornton took a look back at the major Kentucky Derby and Oaks preps from coast to coast, from Leslie's Rose (Into Mischief) earning a breakout victory in the GI Ashland S. to the showdown between Stronghold (Ghostzapper) and Imagination (Into Mischief) in the GI Santa Anita Derby. A bill to radically reform Maryland's racing industry has passed both chambers of the state legislature, with the House voting 105-32 Monday night to approve a project that will see among other things ownership of Pimlico Race Course transferred from 1/ST Racing and Gaming to the state and the establishment of a year-round training facility for Maryland's horsemen and women. After the Maryland House of Delegates initially passed the legislation unanimously, the bill was subsequently amended by the Senate. This amended bill was then sent back to the House for Monday's concurrence vote. The legislation will now go to the desk of Maryland governor, Wes Moore, for a final signature, with a veto seemingly unlikely. “I've worked with governors going back to the mid- to late-1970s in Maryland, and most were very supportive of the industry in one shape or form. But Governor Moore was absolutely committed to this project. His support was instrumental in getting this passed,” said Alan Foreman, voting member of the non-profit Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority (MTROA), about passage of HB 1524, otherwise known as “Pimlico Plus.” The MTROA is an industry-led non-profit created last year by the legislature to essentially oversee and help facilitate the Pimlico Plus plan. Pending gubernatorial approval, the rollout of the plan will be a multi-year project beginning June 1, when the law goes into effect. Among key provisions of the plan, the legislation requires the formation of a non-profit to manage daily operations of Maryland's new industry infrastructure. Those responsibilities are currently filled by the Maryland Jockey Club, owned and operated by 1/ST Racing. The MTROA will have ultimate oversight of this new entity. “Like the [New York Racing Association] reports to the franchise oversight board, the entity to be created in Maryland will report to the MTROA,” said Foreman. Though much-needed renovations to Pimlico could begin later this year, said Foreman, the 2025 Preakness is still expected to be staged at the Baltimore track, with the 2026 edition set to be hosted temporarily at Laurel Park. “After Preakness 2025, Pimlico will undergo full construction, and the plan is that the 2027 Preakness will be at Pimlico under the auspices of the new non-for-profit.” said Foreman. “For the horsemen, racing will be conducted at Laurel for the next three years.” Like Pimlico, Laurel is currently operated by 1/ST Racing under the umbrella of The Stronach Group (TSG). Transfer of Pimlico from 1/ST Racing to the state comes at a nominal one-dollar price-tag. The MTROA has already negotiated a licensing agreement with 1/ST Racing to operate and promote the GI Preakness S. and the GII Black-Eyed Susan S., Maryland's two signature races. “It's a 10-year agreement with five-year renewals,” said Foreman. “After ten years, if the state wanted to buy it out, it could. But any renewals would be for five-year intervals.” Complementing a revamped Pimlico will be the selection of a year-round companion training facility to accommodate the horses not stabled at Pimlico. According to Foreman, some 1,300 horses are expected to be split evenly between the two facilities. The MTROA has identified eight potential training facilities for purchase, rating them by several criteria, including their location, size, cost to purchase and cost of redevelopment. According to this rating system, two facilities come out jointly on top: Shamrock Farm and Mitchell Farm Training Center. Shamrock Farm Training Center is a 155-acre facility just over 20 miles from Pimlico. Mitchell Farm Training Center is a 97-acre facility near the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The third-rated facility is the Bowie Race Track, a 131-acre training facility. The legislation also allows the Maryland Stadium Authority–a state-founded entity to help fund and operate key building projects in Maryland–to issue $400 million in bonds to help bankroll the Pimlico Plus plan. Ultimately, ownership of Laurel Park will be transferred fully to TSG for redevelopment at the beginning of 2028, “unless we have to extend the lease,” said Foreman. According to Foreman, state taxpayers won't be on the hook should the non-profit formed to manage daily operations going forward run into operating deficits. “If there's an operating loss when the non-for-profit takes over, the Thoroughbred purse dedication account has to backstop the losses. It will not come from taxpayer dollars,” said Foreman. “I can't overstate the historical moment this is for Maryland racing. It's historical for the City of Baltimore. This is great for the City of Baltimore. It stops decades of worries about Pimlico and the future of the Preakness in Maryland and Baltimore. It's great for the Park Heights community. And I think it's great for the racing industry overall,” said Foreman. A filly from the first crop of multiple Grade I winner Tiz the Law (hip 365) tied the track record when working a quarter-mile in :20 1/5 during the third session of the under-tack preview for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, while 17 juveniles shared the session's fastest furlong time of :9 4/5, Tuesday in Central Florida. “It was pretty special,” consignor Tom McCrocklin said of the bullet quarter-mile work. “I have one disability that keeps me knowing that one will go that fast and that is that I don't clock my horses at any point. But I did know that she could really run. She's been doing extremely well for the last month, getting better and better. So she obviously peaked at the right time and put in a stellar performance.” The bay filly is out of stakes-placed Moonlight Sky (Sky Mesa), a half-sister to champion Abel Tasman (Quality Road) and a full to graded winner Sky Girl. Moonlight Sky is also the dam of graded-placed Urban (Quality Road). McCrocklin purchased the juvenile for $170,000 on behalf of Jim Tilton at last year's Keeneland September sale. “She looked like an athlete, looked like a runner,” McCrocklin said of the filly's appeal last fall. “She's got pedigree as well. She is a half to a black-type filly and has Abel Tasman in the second dam. So there is a lot of quality there. For a first year stallion, it's a little bit of a gamble, but he was a very high-quality racehorse and she was a beautiful physical horse. She brought a lot of money as a yearling and, right now, I feel good about the purchase.” Tiz the Law, winner of the GI Belmont S. and GI Runhappy Travers S. in the COVID-delayed 2020 season, has 12 juveniles expected to breeze at OBS this week. “This filly has a lot of Tiz the Law in her,” McCrocklin said. “She is a strong, stout filly. There is nothing feminine about her. She's easily mistaken for a colt. She's real quiet. I checked in on her first thing this morning and she's in there sleeping like it's just another day at the office.” The :20 1/5 mark was most recently set by a filly by Win Win Win, who went on to top the OBS March sale when selling for $1.8 million to Zedan Racing. A Trio of Bullet Workers for Vekoma Of the 17 juveniles to work the furlong in :9 4/5 Tuesday, three were by Spendthrift Farm's first-crop sire Vekoma. Leading off that trio was a filly out of stakes-placed Our Jenny B (Tale of the Cat) (hip 435) who was the second horse to work Tuesday morning. She is consigned by Grassroots Training & Sales, which purchased her for $60,000 in Louisiana last fall. Just a few hips later, a colt by Vekoma out of Newbie (Bernardini) (hip 411) also turned in a :9 4/5 work. Consigned by Sequel Bloodstock, as agent for Chester and Mary Broman, he is a half-brother to graded winner Classy Edition (Classic Empire) and to multiple stakes winner Newly Minted (Central Banker). A filly by Vekoma (hip 479) completed the stallion's three bullet workers midway through the session's second hour. She is consigned by Mayberry Farm on behalf of Nice Guys Stables, which purchased her for $130,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale. “She's always been a lovely, honest filly,” Summer Mayberry said of the juvenile. “We were expecting that she would work very well. She tries every single time. She's got a great disposition. She just makes our job look easy.” Out of Pray for Leslie (Bernardini), the filly is a half-sister to last year's GI Darley Alcibiades third-place finisher Alys Beach (Omaha Beach). “She is an average-sized filly with a very racy body,” Mayberry said. “She has beautiful confirmation. She's got all the parts that you look for.” Of the first-crop Vekoma juveniles that she has seen, Mayberry said, “We have three still at the farm. They all seem like they are pretty nice horses. They have great dispositions, good conformation. Just very nice racehorses.” Steve Spielman's Nice Guys partnership has already enjoyed seven-figure success at OBS, having sold a daughter of Arrogate for $1 million to Katsumi Yoshida at the 2021 Spring sale. The operation has four fillies still to work this week at OBS with Mayberry Farm. Twice as Nice Both Grassroots Training & Sales and Sequel Bloodstock doubled up on bullet workers Tuesday. Grassroots sent out a colt by Improbable (hip 517) to hit that mark, while Sequel sent out a New York-bred son of Game Winner (hip 487), also for the Bromans. First-crop sire Game Winner had a second bullet worker Tuesday with hip 389, a son of the 2018 champion 2-year-old champion consigned by Julie Davies. Eddie Woods had a pair of bullet workers Tuesday: hip 454 is a daughter of Practical Joke; and hip 460 is a filly from the first crop of Thousand Words. Thousand Words had his second bullet of the session when hip 506, a filly by the Spendthrift stallion, worked in :9 4/5 for Britton Peak. Thousand Words has already had his first winner on the racetrack after The Queens M G's victory at Keeneland Sunday. Also sharing the :9 4/5 bullet Tuesday: hip 372, a filly by St Patrick's Day consigned by Sweet River Thoroughbreds; hip 392, a filly by Khozan consigned by Shanbally Acres; hip 407, a colt by Bernardini consigned by Envision Equine; hip 448, a filly by Mendelssohn consigned by Paul Sharp; hip 477, a colt by Oscar Performance consigned by Wavertree Stables; hip 489, a filly by Mendelssohn consigned by Randy Miles; hip 502, a colt by Global Campaign consigned by Top Line Sales; and hip 511, a filly by Ride On Curlin consigned by Blue River Bloodstock. The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 8 a.m. The OBS Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday. Bidding commences each day at 10:30 a.m. The post Tiz the Law Filly Zips Fastest Quarter at OBS Tuesday appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
