Tayla Melvin had an afternoon to remember at Pukekohe Park on Saturday, riding her first winner in the saddle aboard the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained Devoted. The 21-year-old is apprenticed to the Te Akau Racing trainers and made her raceday debut aboard the stable’s mare Polly Plum in mid-April at Matamata, finishing third. With a further nine raceday rides under her belt, Melvin combined with the son of Contributer in the TAB NZ 2100, where he was rated a $16.30 chance after finishing strongly last-start for fourth under the young hoop at Rotorua. Devoted jumped fairly away from barrier seven and Melvin allowed the six-year-old to settle back at the tail of the 14-horse field, sitting three-wide in the heavy conditions. The gelding was travelling better than most turning for home, sweeping to the extreme outside and running down Charlbury to score by a neck at the post. Melvin was elated after the victory, which follows an extensive list of Te Akau apprentices to salute on raceday including Daniel Stackhouse, Vinnie Colgan, Opie Bosson and Troy Harris. “It’s good to finally get the monkey off my back this early in my career, it’s pretty good,” she said. “I probably rode him a bit further back than I had anticipated, but he’s the kind of horse that switches off and relaxes in behind midfield. “When he came into the home straight, he let down really nicely. “I did think it might be coming (the win), but I didn’t want to get too confident.” While Melvin didn’t initially have a career in horses in mind, she ended up working for Wingatui couple Terry and Debbie Kennedy, and a move to Matamata soon provided an opportunity to start an apprenticeship. “I said to myself when I left school that I didn’t want to pursue a career in horses, but here I am,” she said. “I’m originally from down south in Mosgiel, and I was based with Terry and Debbie Kennedy down there. “I started with Te Akau about a year ago, and Mark offered for me to stay and do my apprenticeship with him, so I haven’t looked back since.” Walker was full of praise for Melvin, while indicating a future over the fences is a possibility for her winning mount. “She’s an important part of the team, rides beautiful track work, and all the staff will be rapt for her,” he said. “She’s been getting better in every ride since starting off last month and her fitness is continuing to improve. I think she’s got a bright future. “And the horse, Devoted, he’s continuing to furnish and mature, although it has taken time, and he could develop into a really nice steeplechaser.” Devoted was purchased by Te Akau principal David Ellis at the 2019 Karaka Yearling Sales, out of co-breeder Mapperley Stud’s draft for $50,000. The gelding has won four races and $72,842 in stakes from 33 attempts for the Te Akau Cartography Syndicate. View the full article

Luke Nolen is back as I Wish I Win’s (NZ) (Savabeel) rider in Saturday’s Gr.1 Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm. Nolen has missed riding the Group One star at both runs this campaign, but has re-claimed the ride from James McDonald, who is unavailable due to his commitments around Hong Kong star Romantic Warrior in Japan on Sunday. Nolen has ridden I Wish I Win in eight of his 11 Australian starts but lost the ride first-up this campaign in the Gr.1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m) following injuries incurred from a trackwork fall. McDonald retained the ride when I Wish I Win was nosed out in the last stride by Bella Nipotina in the Gr.1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) earlier this month. Sportsbet has I Wish I Win marked the $3.60 favourite ahead of Victorian mare Magic Time at $6. Moody holds the key to both Group One races in Brisbane on Saturday as aside from I Wish I Win’s attempt on the Kingsford-Smith Stakes, he will saddle the filly Autumn Angel in the Queensland Derby. Deserving 1-9 favorite Adare Manor (Uncle Mo–Brooklynsway, by Giant Gizmo) returned to her court and took home her second consecutive GII Santa Margarita S. at 'The Great RIP' on Sunday afternoon. A multiple grade I stakes winner who last out conquered Oaklawn Park's GI Apple Blossom H. in April, grabbed the lead from the bell and never looked back. Going along effortlessly up the backstretch and into the far turn, she won geared down over Coffee in Bed (Curlin). Adare Manor is the first to pull off the Apple Blossom-Santa Margarita double in the same season since Horse of the Year Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}). The final running time was 1:50.86. What Kembla Grange Races Where Kembla Grange Racecourse – Princes Highway, Kembla Grange NSW 2526 When Tuesday, May 28, 2024 First Race 12:35pm AEST Visit Dabble NSW racing heads to Kembla Grange on Tuesday afternoon, with a quickfire seven-race program set for decision. The rail is out +6m for the entire circuit, and although the surface is rated a Soft 5 as of Monday, a favourable forecast in the lead-up should mean an upgrade into the Good range prior to the opening event at 12:35pm AEST. Best Bet: Monte Kate Monte Kate was unable to cling to victory at this course and distance on May 18, but she looks perfectly placed to make amends in this Class 1 contest. The daughter of I Am Invincible attempted making every post winner last start but faded late due to the testing Heavy surface. Getting back on top of the ground should be ideal, and with Tommy Berry taking the reins this time, watch for Monte Kate to boot clear with the prize. Best Bet Race 4 – #5 Monte Kate (7) 3yo Filly | T: Robert & Luke Price | J: Tommy Berry (57.5kg) +200 with Bet365 Next Best: Vanquished Vanquished steps back significantly in grade after a bold display at Randwick on May 15. The gelding by Vancouver tried to lead all the way on the Kensington circuit but gave way due to a lack of fitness first-up in Heavy conditions. This Class 1 should prove far more manageable for the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained three-year-old, and with some upside compared to a few key rivals, Vanquished will prove hard to hold out. Next Best Race 2 – #1 Vanquished (3) 3yo Gelding | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Jean Van Overmeire (61.5kg) +260 with Unibet Next Best Again: Goodlucktome Goodlucktome appears to have a stack of ability heading into his debut for the Ciaron Maher barn. The son of Written Tycoon has won back-to-back barrier trials, with the latest piece of work at Rosehill on May 17 catching the eye as he cruised through the wire under his own steam. Jason Collett may be forced to drag back from barrier 11, but with plenty of time to wind up, watch for Goodlucktome to power over the top. Next Best Again Race 3 – #8 Goodlucktome (11) 2yo Colt | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Jason Collett (56.5kg) +300 with Neds Tuesday Kembla Grange quaddie picks – 28/5/2024 Kembla Grange quadrella selections Tuesday, May 28, 2024 5 1-8 1-2-6 5-8-10 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

What Taree Races Where Manning Valley Race Club – Racecourse Dr, Taree NSW 2430 When Monday, May 27, 2024 First Race 11:35pm AEST Visit Dabble The new week of racing gets underway at Taree on Monday afternoon, with a competitive nine-race program set for decision. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and with no rain forecast in the lead-up, the surface should upgrade from the Heavy 10 rating at the time of acceptances. Punters should expect a Soft 5 track, with the opening race scheduled for 11:35am local time. Best Bet at Taree: Exorealm Exorealm debuts for the Kristen Buchanan barn on the back of two soft pieces of work. Particularly his most recent effort at Gosford caught the eye, with the son of Exosphere cruising through the wire under his own steam. He appears wound-up and ready to go first-up, and with star country racing hoop Aaron Bullock set to take the reins, Exorealm will prove hard to hold out in this maiden contest. Best Bet Race 3 – #2 Exorealm (5) 3yo Gelding | T: Kristen Buchanan | J: Aaron Bullock (59kg) +200 with Neds Next Best at Taree: Naahro Naahro has hit the line well in back-to-back starts and appears set to shirk the maiden tag on Monday. The Lohnro bred gelding has been getting too far back in slowly run races, and with the opportunity for a change of tactics could do the trick for the winless three-year-old. Expect Andrew Gibbons to launch forward from barrier seven, and with no speed on, watch for Naahro to tick-over a couple soft sectionals to score at start eight. Next Best Race 4 – #2 Naahro (7) 3yo Gelding | T: Kris Lees | J: Andrew Gibbons (59.5kg) +220 with PLayUp Best Value: Bangetta Bangetta takes a dramatic drop back into Class 2 company and looks perfectly placed for success by the Kris Lees barn. The daughter of Hellbent didn’t go a yard on the Heavy surface at Randwick on May 15, with the Kensington circuit playing on-speed favours throughout the afternoon. This is the easiest opposition she’s faced for some time, and at the each-way price with online bookmakers, Bangetta looks a big price in this. Best Value Race 5 – #2 Bangetta (7) 3yo Filly | T: Kris Lees | J: Andrew Gibbons (59.5kg) +600 with Dabble Taree Monday quaddie tips Taree quadrella selections Monday, May 27, 2024 1-10 1-3-5-8 1-2-4-5-7 1-10 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

Will Rogers Downs was hit by a tornado that tore through Claremore, Oklahoma Saturday night. The tornado, which caused heavy damage to homes and businesses in the area, was an EF-2, according to initial surveys by the National Weather Service. The Enhanced Fujita Wind Scale rates tornados from zero to five, with five being the strongest. “The property was in the path of the tornado,” Travis Noland, a spokesman for Will Rogers Downs, told Daily Racing Form Sunday. “At the property itself, there is some pretty significant damage, but we're really grateful from a life, safety respect, there were no reports of any serious injuries.” Will Rogers concluded its Thoroughbred meet May 15. Horses remaining on the grounds Saturday were transported to other facilities throughout the morning Sunday. A post on the track's Facebook page Sunday morning said, “Will Rogers Downs remains closed as we continue assessing the damage from last night's storm.” The post Tornado Strikes Will Rogers Downs appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. With a steady rain coming down at Churchill Downs, La Marinera (Instilled Regard–Curlin Supreme, by Curlin) beat the boys and delivered a first win to his sire on Sunday afternoon. The juvenile tracked just off of Coming in Hot (Maclean's Music) up the backstretch, but when it was time to make her move around the far turn she responded. Powering down the lane, the filly won by a length over a late-running Strummin (Flameaway). The final running time was :59.97. Instilled Regard has 50 foals of racing age to his credit. The Wine Steward (Vino Rosso), most recently seen finishing second in the May 11 GIII Peter Pan S., is being considered for either the 10-furlong GI Belmont S. or the seven-furlong GI Woody Stephens S., both at Saratoga June 8. “It depends on the trip, but I think he can get it [the distance]– he's bred to get it and should be able to,” David Staudacher, who co-owns the colt with Paradise Farms Corp., said regarding the 10-furlong Belmont distance. “I think he likes the track up there, so we'll see what [trainer] Mike [Maker] decides to do. We just have to see how the horse is doing. He's a really nice horse and we don't want to rush him. We'd love to be in the Belmont, so we have our fingers crossed.” The Wine Steward worked four furlongs in :48.00 (23/180) at Churchill Downs Saturday. “I was there and he worked pretty easy and looked good,” said Staudacher. “Mike is going to have to decide on which race in the next week or so. We're still undecided. He had a couple tough races, so we've got to make sure he bounces back right.” The Wine Steward opened his career with three straight wins last summer, including victories in the Bashford Manor S. at Ellis Park and the Funny Cide S. at Saratoga. He concluded his juvenile campaign with a runner-up effort in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity and opened 2024 with a runner-up effort in the Apr. 12 GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. He was 3/4 lengths behind Antiquarian (Preservationist) when runner-up in the Peter Pan. A late absentee from last month's G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2,000 Guineas) due to lameness, Danon Decile (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) gained compensation with an emphatic victory in Sunday's G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) at Tokyo Racecourse, the second leg of the Japanese Triple Crown. The 17-strong field featured six of the first seven from the Satuski Sho, including the unbeaten winner Justin Milano (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}), runner-up Cosmo Kuranda (Jpn) (Al Ain {Jpn}) and sixth Regaleira (Jpn) (Suave Richard {Jpn}), who was attempting to become the first filly to win the Tokyo Yushun since Vodka (Jpn) (Tanino Gimlet {Jpn}) in 2007. Regaleira was considered to be the main danger to favourite Justin Milano in the betting, with Danon Decile only the ninth pick at odds of 46/1. Breaking sharply from gate five, Danon Decile was settled in a share of third with Justin Milano as Ecoro Walz (Jpn) (Black Tide {Jpn}) led the field in the early stages. Having saved ground on the inner throughout, he quickly settled matters with an explosive turn of foot once hitting the front entering the final 300 metres, ultimately beating Justin Milano by two lengths. Shin Emperor (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), fifth in the Satsuki Sho on his previous start, was over a length further back in third, with significant outsider Sunrise Earth (Jpn) (Rey De Oro {Jpn}) and Regaleira making up the first five finishers. It was a first win in the Tokyo Yushun for trainer Shogo Yasuda, while Norihiro Yokoyama became the oldest Group 1-winning jockey at the age of 56 as he celebrated his third success in the race after those of Logi Universe (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) in 2009 and One And Only (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) in 2014. “I thought that the pace would be normal or slow since there were no horses that wanted to set the pace,” said Yokoyama. “But as Ecoro Walz took the front, we were able to wait in good position until the straight, and the horse responded strongly from there. I'm happy to have won the Derby but I'm also glad that my decision to not race him in the Satsuki Sho was not wrong. Danon Decile is a horse with great potential, and we knew that he would be a great horse if we took good care of him. I'm really grateful to the horse.” Danon Decile was having his fifth start in the Tokyo Yushun and his first since winning the G3 Keisei Hai at Nakayama in January. He opened his account at the second attempt as a two-year-old before ending that campaign with a fourth-place finish behind Shin Emperor in the G3 Kyoto Nisai S. in November. He later doubled his tally at the top level when also winning the Japan Cup the following year. Already in 2024, Epiphaneia had been responsible for the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1,000 Guineas) winner and G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) runner-up Stellenbosch (Jpn), while last year another daughter, Daring Tact (Jpn), won both of those races before completing the Japanese Triple Tiara with victory in the G1 Shuka Sho. The first of Epiphaneia's offspring to win a Classic was Efforia (Jpn), who struck in the Satsuki Sho–as well as the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) and G1 Arima Kinen–in a brilliant three-year-old campaign in 2021. Bred by Shadai Farm, Danon Decile was sold to Danon Co Ltd as a yearling for ¥135,000,000 (around $992,667) at the JRHA Select Sale. A trio of graded stakes, led by the GI Gamely S. and GI Shoemaker Mile S., will anchor a stacked Memorial Day holiday program at Santa Anita on Monday. Making her first start since capturing the GI American Oaks Dec. 26, Anisette (GB) (Awtaad {Ire}) headlines a deep nine-horse field set for the Gamely. The Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners colorbearer also captured last term's GI Del Mar Oaks. Hall of Famer Richard Mandella will be represented by last-out local graded winners Ruby Nell (Bolt d'Oro) (GII Buena Vista S.) and the streaking Linda's Gift (Arrogate) (GIII Santa Ana S.). The rail-drawn Olivia Maralda (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), a 725,000gns TATDEC purchase by Woodford Thoroughbreds last winter, heads west for trainer Will Walden following a rallying second-place finish while making her U.S. debut in a Keeneland allowance Apr. 20. Du Jour (Temple City) and Easter (Fr) (Exosphere {Aus}), the first two finishers across the line in the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. Mar. 3, will meet again in the Shoemaker Mile. The field of 11 also includes returning 2023 GII Del Mar Derby winner Conclude (Collected) and GIII American S. Apr. 4 winner Johannes (Nyquist). The GII Hollywood Gold Cup will showcase a field of eight, including: GIII Californian S. Apr. 20 one-two-three Mr Fisk (Arrogate), Judge Miller (Curlin) and Mixto (Good Magic); and narrow GI Santa Anita H. Mar. 3 runner-up Subsanador (Arg) (Fortify). Trainer Chad Brown, meanwhile, will send out an imposing trio, led by unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' and Memories of Silver S. Apr. 28 heroine Sweet Rebecca (American Pharoah) as he looks to secure a record-extending sixth victory in the GII Wonder Again S. at Belmont at the Big A. Monday's graded stakes action is rounded out by the GIII Steve Sexton Mile S. at Lone Star and the GIII Winning Colors S. at Churchill Downs.
