Oisin Murphy, the British Champion Jockey in 2019, 2020 and 2021, decided to spend part of his winter riding at Gulfstream Park. He didn't come just for the sunshine. Murphy felt that experiencing something different, riding on the dirt and competing against one of the best riding colonies in the world, would further his career. How has he done? Has the experience made him a better rider? Those were questions we asked Murphy when he joined this week's TDN Writers' Room podcast sponsored by Keeneland. Murphy was the Green Group Guest of the Week. “On dirt, I always knew that if you get stopped at any stage, it can be race over for you,” Murphy said. “Watching those top riders riding on a daily basis has been great. And I've ridden for some top trainers while I've been here and I've enjoyed that. Hopefully, this week, I've got some chances to ride another winner or two. I just have a lot of admiration for the lads I've been riding against.” Murphy has ridden five winners at the meet, not at all bad considering he came here with few connections and is riding every day against the likes of Irad Ortiz Jr., John Velazquez, Tyler Gaffalione and the rest. But he said he had hope to do better. “I'd like to have ridden a lot more winners,” he said. “I've tried. In fairness, I knew coming here that it wasn't going to be easy. I got some really good results on Saturday, which was fulfilling, and I felt like I rode well over the weekend. But, of course, I always want to do better. I knew coming here that the jockey colony was very strong. But I want to do better. If I get another chance to come here, I'd like to ride many more winners.” Will he be back next year? “I'll definitely aim to come back and do a similar stint,” Murphy said. “I know I'm not going to earn loads of money in the month of January here, but I think the connections I can develop here will serve me well in the future. Some of those top jockeys are going to retire in the next number of years, like to Johnny V. and Frankie Dettori. Those top dirt races like the Saudi Cup, Dubai World Cup, Breeders' Cup Classic are worth an awful lot of money. If I have enough experience on dirt, and can prove myself, hopefully I can put my hand on the phone and call a trainer or an owner and ask is your horse available in this race because I'd love to ride them?” In the stallion spotlight segments, the podcast featured Coolmore's Tiz the Law (Constitution), who stands for a fee of $20,000. The focus was also on four-time Grade I winner Improbable (City Zip), who stands at WinStar for $15,000. Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by WinStar Farm, the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association,https://www.kentuckybred.org/https://www.nyrabets.com/ 1/ST Racing, the KTA & KTOB, West Point Thoroughbreds, https://www.winstarfarm.com/and XBTV.com, the team of Randy Moss, Bill Finley and Zoe Cadman gave their opinions on the fact that owners are not planning to transfer their 3-year-old stars out of the Bob Baffert barn even though that means they will not be eligible to run in the GI Kentucky Derby. The Derby could be missing some of the best horses in the division. They discussed a successful Pegasus World Cup Day at Gulfstream and looked ahead to a quartet of Derby preps set to be run this weekend, which include an appearance by 'TDN Rising Star' and 2-year-old champion Fierceness (City of Light) in the GIII Holy Bull S. at Gulfstream. As we approach the opening of the 2024 breeding season, the TDN staff is once again sitting down with leading breeders to find out what stallions they have chosen for their mares, and why. Here we catch up with Christie DeBernardis, CHC's Regional Manager of the Americas. Alberobello (m, 9, Bernardini–Carson Jen, by Carson City), booked to Uncle Mo Alberobello hails from an exceptional family that is constantly improving. Additionally, Bernardini is becoming one of the best broodmare sires we've seen in a while. Alberobello produced an Uncle Mo colt for us in 2023 and we were so pleased with him, that we decided to breed her back to that Coolmore super sire after she produces her Justify foal this spring. Always A Joker (f, 4, Into Mischief–Halo Humor, by Distorted Humor), booked to Justify We purchased this full-sister to MGISW and successful sire Practical Joke at Keeneland November and look forward to her future. She is as beautifully made as she is bred. We thought Justify was a good physical and pedigree match for her first mating, plus he and her sire Into Mischief are two of the hottest stallions on the market right now. Cozze Up Lady (m, 15, Cozzene–The White Lady, by Johannesburg), booked to Constitution A Grade III winner during her racetrack career, Cozze Up Lady brought that same class and talent to the breeding shed, producing GISW Kimari (Munnings). Her 2021 colt by Constitution, now named Tucson, brought seven figures as a yearling and is currently training towards his debut for WinStar/Siena Farm with Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher. We decided to send her back to that leading stallion for 2024. Embellish the Lace (m, 12, Super Saver–Expanse, by Distant View), booked to Life Is Good Grade I winner Embellish the Lace has already produced a pair of million-dollar yearlings. One of those seven-figure sellers was a daughter of the great Into Mischief, now two-time winner Pumpkin Scone. We retained that filly's full-sister Into Amore and she is training very well as she prepares for her career bow with Pletcher. Given her success with Into Mischief, we decided to send Embellish the Lace to one of his fastest sons, Life Is Good. End Times (m, 9, War Front–Last Full Measure, by Empire Maker), booked to Americanrevolution CHC homebred End Times is the second foal out of Grade I winner and producer Last Full Measure. We sold a lovely Audible filly out of her for $255,000 at this year's KEESEP sale and she has a very nice Improbable yearling filly and newborn colt from the first crop of Nashville. She is one of three mares we are sending to our new stallion, GISW Americanrevolution, as we make our first foray into the New York breeding program. Last Full Measure (m, 16, Empire Maker–Lazy Slusan, by Slewvescent), booked to Into Mischief GISW and producer Last Full Measure's offspring have proved quite popular at auction, including her 2022 Constitution filly, who summoned $800,000 at KEESEP last year. The topper at that auction was a $3-million Into Mischief colt out of an Empire Maker mare and that cross is also responsible for MGISW Mandaloun and Grade II winner Laurel River. We hope to add to the success of that cross as Last Full Measure visits Into Mischief this year. Summer Solo (m, 14, Arch–Summer Solstice {Ire}, by Caerleon), booked to Not This Time We purchased this GISP mare in 2022 and her first foal for us is a knockout. She is now the dam of two black-type horses thanks to the recent exploits of her daughter Solo Album (Curlin). Arch is phenomenal broodmare sire and Summer Solo has proven to be a versatile broodmare. We are sending her to Not This Time, who has already produced a SW and GSP horse out of an Arch mare in Howling Time. Yellow Agate (m, 10, Gemologist–Lemon Sorbet, by Lemon Drop Kid), booked to Quality Road Yellow Agate was CHC's first Grade I winner in America and continues to reward us as a broodmare. She has three winners from three foals of racing age, including GSW and $650,000 KEESEP buy Agate Road (Quality Road). His two older siblings, Gasoline (Curlin) and Plentitude (Quality Road), combined to win five races in 2023 and appear poised to add more black type to this family. Her 2022 filly by Quality Road summoned $650,000 at Saratoga last summer. Given all of her success with Quality Road, it seemed like a no-brainer to send Yellow Agate back to the Lane's End kingpin this year. Interested in sharing your own mating plans? Tuscan Gold (Medaglia d'Oro) debuted with an educational–if a bit troubled–fourth-place effort behind sales-topping stablemate and 'TDN Rising Star' Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) and fellow seven-figure seller Change In Command (Into Mischief) going a mile at Aqueduct Nov. 4. Sierre Leone did his part to validate the effort with a near-miss second in the GII Remsen S., while Change of Command has since won twice, including a Jan. 5 allowance at this track, and Tuscan Gold will presumably get his chance to further frank the form after being named a 'TDN Rising Star' himself Wednesday afternoon. A somewhat surprising 8-5 second choice behind three-start maiden Skip the Line (Into Mischief–Bubbler) at 11-10, Tuscan Gold was toting the Gary Broad/Walmac silks this time around after debuting in the Lawrence colors and was trapped out five deep rounding the first turn while niggled along to keep pace by Tyler Gaffalione. Able to shift in to save some ground midway up the backstretch, the $600,000 Keeneland September grad was soon back into the bridle and was all the way up into third rounding the second bend. Looking a bit one-paced as he tried to get to front-running Skip the Line approaching the stretch, Tuscan Gold was popped the question in earnest and ran away impressively before galloping out with good energy. Stonestreet bred Tuscan Gold from their very talented Valadorna (Curlin), runner-up to Champagne Room (Broken Vow) in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile and–appropriately enough–third in the GII Rachel Alexandra S. at three. A listed winner at the tail end of that season, she posted a career-high in the GIII Hilliard Lyons Doubledogdare S. at four in 2018. A half-sister to former Chad Brown Grade I winner Complexity (Maclean's Music), Valadorna is also represented by a 2-year-old colt by Uncle Mo and a yearling colt by Tapit. Valadorna was not bred in 2023. Tuscan Gold is a 33rd 'Rising Star' for his recently turned 25-year-old stallion. 7th-Gulfstream, $70,000, Msw, 1-31, 3yo, 1 1/16m, 1:46.42, ft, 6 1/4 lengths. Yulong Investments' Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never–Plying, by Hard Spun), a four-time Group 1-winning 6-year-old, will be covered by Frankel (GB) and is already back in the Northern Hemisphere, according to published reports. Bred by Churchtown House Stud, she sold for €40,000 as a Goffs November foal and was originally raced by Jeff Smith of Littleton Stud and trainer Andrew Balding. Successful in the G1 Cheveley Park S. as a juvenile, both the G1 Coronation S. and G1 Sussex S. went her way in 2021. Kept in training at four, she added the G1 July Cup S. to her resume before bringing 5.4 million gns to top the 2022 Tattersalls December Mares Sale when picked up by Yuesheng Zhang's Yulong. After an Australian campaign with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, she has returned to Europe for broodmare duty. Her record stands at 20-6-1-3 and $2,546,735 in earnings. Charles Fipke homebred JUSTIFY PERFECTION (Justify) is a half-sister to four winners from six to the races, including three to have earned black-type, namely GI Natalma S. runner-up Stormy Perfection (Tale of the Cat)–the dam of the Irish stakes-placed Stormy Entry (Point of Entry)–SP Perfection Cat (Tale of the Cat) and MSP Perfect Silent Cat (Tale of the Cat). The unraced dam Silent Perfection (Perfect Soul {Ire}) is a daughter of the beautifully bred Silence Beauty (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), herself responsible for Fipke's GI Wood Memorial S. hero Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat) and GSW Tale of Silence (Tale of the Cat). The GI Alabama S.-winning third dam Maplejinsky (Nijinsky II) produced champion and Filly Triple Crown heroine Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom {Fr}). She'll have to beat Rigney Racing's Tipsy Tammy (Arrogate), a $600,000 KEESEP yearling who was second–and better than 10 lengths ahead of the third–when second on debut to 'TDN Rising Star' Impel (Quality Road) over this course and distance Jan. 1. We are back at the trials for 2024, so what was worth noting from all over the country for the week ending 31/1/2024? St John Eight (3c Always B Miki – Zenardle) Tr. G & J Dunn Qualified at Rangiora (25/1/24) four 4 secs under time after getting to the front and clearing out by 4 1/2L from three rivals untouched in run home. Bred and still owned by Lew Driver, he is a half to a host of good winners including Elroy Jetson (32 wins + $291k + 1:50), Balfast (20wins + $253k + 1:53) and Luke John (8 wins + $158k) and looks to be way better than a maiden. Princess Meritan (5m A Rocknroll Dance – The Princess) Tr. B Butt Set the pace against a star studded Purdon ‘brigade’ (all five of them) and said goodbye on the home turn winning officially by 5L, home in 57.4 for her last 800m. Bred and owned by Brian O’Meara, she has only had the two raceday starts, the last back in April of last year but did win on debut, fourth in the other, and it is suggested that if she can hold together this campaign, she looks one to follow in the short term. Roy Kent (2c Captain Crunch – Snooki) Tr. A Herlihy With the ‘sales’ just around the corner, there is much interest in those sires leaving early 2YO types so early in the season and one sire kicking some goals is Captain Crunch. This colt looked very professional going to the front (Alex Park / 26/1/24) and just when it looked like he would be headed, without too much urging from his trainer, he kicked back to win nicely, last 800m in 58.0. His dam, who Herlihy also trained, won nine and this is her third foal. The first two already winners in sub 2 min MRs before being onsold. Doo You Want Me (2c Captain Crunch – Delightful Lana) Tr. S Doody Central Districts trainer Stephen Doody made the long trip up to Pukekohe (25/1/24) and in the hands of Brent Mangos, made it all worth while when his charge made the lead then cleared out by some 11L at the line, last 400m in 28.6. He looks a very mature type and on that run should be seen going around in the early ‘Young Gun’ heats. He has some breeding to live up to as his dam is a half to the very good Australian pacer in Rock N Roll Doo (12 wins + $458k + 1:50) who came across to contest the NZ Cup in 2022. Ted (3c Sweet Lou – Claire Bear) Tr. M Brown Bred by Woodlands Stud principle Andrew Grierson and placed in the Southland stable of Murray Brown, the handsome colt, named after a famous All Black coach, and still unqualified at this time, went to Winton (26/1/24) and after racing fifth of six and still being last at the 400m, roared home wide out to pick up the pacemaker in impressive fashion, last 800m in 57.0. He has plenty of breeding to live up to with his dam (by Somebeachsomewhere) being a full sister to the 1:49 pacer Funathebeach and belongs to the ‘Moose’ family so successful for the Whitelocks over a number of years. This boy is the first foal of his unraced dam. Ultimate Weapon (3g Bettors Delight – Reality Check) Tr. N Williamson Back here at the workouts (Winton 26/1/24) after disappointing in two runs over the holiday period, the well related gelding trailed two and three deep before getting out at the 400m and finished determinedly, albeit comfortably, to grab pacemaker Wild Bull in the shadows of the post, last 800m in 56.5. Not looking as good as his illustrious full brothers at this stage but surely good enough to win at short notice in the deep south. Did place on debut as a 2YO and from the right stable. Bluto (4g Sweet Lou – Beach Parade) Tr. Anderson & Love Trailed three and four back at Wyndham (27/1/24) and last of five at the 400m, brought wide and finished strongly to get up in a 2:03.6 MR. Showed any amount of promise as a 3YO and thought good enough to take on the best 3YOs at the premier meetings. Only 11 raceday starts to date and connections have been patient after disappointing fresh up on this track at beginning of this year. High strike rate stable and very capable of rewarding those loyal to the cause. Lovemeto (4g What The Hill – Love Ya Doosie) Tr. Rogerson & Ferguson The five win mare (from only 12 starts) started against the pacers (2) at Cambridge (27/1/24) and after trailing third throughout, finished stylishly without being pushed to get within a 1/2L of smart mare Idolou (3 wins from 4 starts), last 800m in 59.9. Getting ready for a new campaign, last raced November last year and with $124k already in the bank, can be expected to take another step towards the open class ranks Follow Your Dream (3f Bettors Delight – Just A Dream) Tr. R & J Dunn Up in the north to prepare for the Magic Millions sale race for 3YO fillies in a couple of weeks, trailed out in her heat at Pukekohe (31/1/24) before popping out at the 600m to lead and kept going strongly to win well from Aye Aye Captain who also went solidly, last 800m in 57.7, 400m in 27.6. Thereabouts last season against the best 2YO fillies and with expected improvement, could threaten ‘the guns’ ! Duchess Megxit (3f Sweet Lou – Kensington Kate) Tr Purdon / Phelan One of those guns, maybe the ‘top gun’, Duchess Megxit started in the next heat (Pukekohe 31/1/24) and sat fourth of five before getting carted up in 1×1 by Hadron Collider from the 600m, smart finish to nail that runner on the line in sharp last 400m (27.3). Massive Group 1 winner as a 2yo at Addington late in the year and she looks like the filly to beat in the next ‘big dance’ in Auckland middle of February. There was plenty to like about the Dunn runner in second place, just a nose away Cold Chisel (3c Always B Miki – Shezaball) Tr. Purdon / Phelan Another getting ready for the Magic Millions, last season’s richest 2YO colt trailed third (Pukekohe 31/1/24) before taking issue with the pacemaking Coastal Babe 500m out, did best over that runner final 50m with the last 400m in a slick 26.9. Was right up there against the best of his age as a 2YO and gives the stable a very strong hand in the upcoming $200k feature (potentially four stable reps). Coastal Babe only beaten a small margin in second and looks right on track for her Magic Millions assignment. Le Major trailed and a nice third after not being asked for a true effort over the final stages. Another runner capable of mixing it with the best 3YOs in what is going to be a very strong field. Dave Duley (3g Bettors Delight – No Liability) Tr. R & J Dunn Looked a maiden full of promise (Pukekohe 31/1/24) when trailing three deep then up to challenge 400m out, just getting the bettor of pacemaker Sea Of Love who went equally as well. (800m in 56.9, 400m in 27.2. Has only had the one start at Addington but did qualify at ‘the Park’ and should be very competitive against ‘non winners’ at least. Ohoka Nico (3c Sweet Lou – Albuquerque) Tr. D Keast Deserves a mention just because he is a half to champion and unbeaten filly Millwood Nike and at Rangiora 31/1/24, he easily qualified against one rival running a 2:01MR, last 800m in 58.9, 5 secs under the required standard. Led throughout and not pushed to win. Only the third foal from a mare where first two (both fillies) have gone sub 1:55. Stands out because of his big white blaze, typical of so many by the sire, but likely to stand out even more when he decides to line up at the races. Ukraine (2c Captain Crunch – Back In The USSR) Tr. B Butt Second trial win for this impressive son of Captain Crunch in as many weeks, settled third of three in his heat (Rangiora 31/1/24) then swept up wide on the corner to race away from his rivals, last 400m in 28.4. Again, he looks like a very mature type so early in the season and could be the ‘benchmark’ around the Canterbury area at this time. Madrid (3f Bettors Delight – Georgia Brooke) Tr M & N Purdon Yet another horse getting ready to head north for the Magic Millions in Auckland, trailed out in her heat (Rangiora 31/1/24) then out to lead 500m, kept up strong run to win impressively, last 800m in 57.3, 400m in 28.6. Proved very competitive against the best of her age group as a 2YO and no reason why she shouldn’t be so again. Stable never to be underestimated. Chase A Dream (3c Captaintreacherous – Secret Lotion) Tr. M & N Purdon Stable out in force in this heat (31/1/24) with the top rated colt working to the lead after 400m and kept up a strong run to win untouched but super impressive with great sectionals 1:59.9MR, 800m in 57.2, 400m in 27.8. Looming as the horse to beat in the rich 3YO race at Auckland. Stablemate Treacherous Baby also heading north and fought on from the trail. Another stablemate Vessem settled last then improved in the open last 700m to be right there on the final corner, didn’t flinch in the run home, he too adds to the puzzle in what is a quality group of 3YO colts and geldings View the full article

5th-Gulfstream, $72,000, Alw (NW1$X), Opt. Clm ($25,000), 1-31, 4yo/up, f/m, 1 1/16mT, 1:40.88, fm, 1 1/4 lengths. DELAHAYE (f, 4, Medaglia d'Oro–Bella Carina, by War Front) sat a no-cover trip three and four wide on her debut over this course last February, but jockey Javier Castellano lost the crop with judgment day approaching and the filly went down to a narrow defeat behind the future MSP Love Appeals (Speightstown). Away for 8 1/2 months thereafter, the $550,000 Keeneland September yearling raced more prominently in an Aqueduct maiden and shot clear late to graduate by a handy 3 1/4 lengths at 65 cents on the dollar when last seen Nov. 5. Favored here at an arguably overlaid 9-10 and carrying the Three Chimneys colors for the first time, Delahaye tugged her way to the front without expending much energy and led her rivals along through sedate fractions of :24.01 and :48.92. Castellano sat hard against Delahaye around the turn, cut the ribbons once heads were turned for home and she easily held sway to the wire. She covered her final 2 1/2 furlongs in :28.20 and sprinted the final sixteenth in a very slick :5.50. Delahaye is the ninth winner worldwide from 11 runners bred on this cross, a number that includes the stakes winners Ticker Tape Home and Golden Canary. Ben Leon's Besilu Stables acquired the stakes-winning second dam Grand Prayer (Grand Slam) in foal to Medaglia d'Oro for an even $1 million from the Ned Evans dispersal at Keeneland November in 2011, a little more than a year after the mare's daughter Malibu Prayer (Malibu Moon) won the GI Ruffian H. for Evans and Mark Hennig. Grand Prayer's value appreciated further still when her Medaglia d'Oro foal of 2010, Valid, became a three-time graded winner and Grade I-placed on the dirt. Malibu Prayer is also the dam of the MGSP Grand Love, whose sire Gun Runner is out of Quiet Giant (Giant's Causeway), a $3-million purchase by Besilu from the same dispersal. Leon also paid a sales-topping $8.5 million for champion Royal Delta (Empire Maker). Bella Carina is the dam of a 2-year-old Not This Time colt that was bought back on a bid of $350,000 at Keeneland September last fall and a yearling colt by Gun Runner. She was not bred last season. What Moonee Valley Races Where Moonee Valley Racecourse – 1 McPherson St, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039 When Friday, February 2, 2024 First Race 6:25pm AEDT Visit Dabble For the first time in 2024, racing returns under lights to Moonee Valley this Friday evening, where a competitive eight-race meeting is set down for decision. A perfect summers night is forecast for The Valley, and with the track a Good 4 and the rail out 3m the entire circuit, every runner will get their chance if they’re good enough. Friday night racing is set to commence at 6:15pm AEDT. Best Bet at Moonee Valley: Ceremonious Ceremonious gets our best bet tag on Friday night as he looks to break his maiden ranks at start three. The three-year-old gelding finished third on debut at Cranbourne behind Acid Wash and Vilnius, before going on to Geelong and finishing second behind Vilnius once again. He stays at the 1500m distance range (1514m), and with Damian Lane hopping on board, he looks the goods. If Lane can land the son of Pierro in the one-one from barrier eight, it looks to be Ceremonious’ race to lose, as long as he does not get trapped wide from the stick draw. Best Bet Race 3 – #5 Ceremonious (3) 3yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: Damian Lane (59kg) +200 with Picklebet Next Best at Moonee Valley: Unusual Pearl It was hard not to be impressed by the way Unusual Pearl disposed of her rivals at Sandown last time out, and we’re confident she can continue her winning form when she heads to The Valley. The Unusual Suspect mare was forced to work three wide with no cover throughout the first half of the race over 2400m, and still had the audacity to kick clear of her rivals in the concluding stages. Barrier two under Mick Dee should suit her perfectly, where the pair can stalk the speed throughout. With even luck on the home turn, we’re confident Unusual Pearl can kick us off as a winner in the opener. Next Best Race 1 – #4 Unusual Pearl (2) 4yo Mare | T: Tony & Calvin McEvoy | J: Michael Dee (56kg) +100 with Dabble Next Best Again at Moonee Valley: Satin And Silk The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Satin And Silk was a dominant all-the-way victor at Gosford on December 28, and we’re confident the I Am Invincible filly can replicate her form the ‘Melbourne Way’. She draws barrier two under Blake Shinn for her Melbourne debut and looks poised to gain a relatively easy lead over the 955m scamper. Blake Shinn will look to try and break their rivals’ hearts, and as long as Satin And Silk can handle the unique aspects of Moonee Valley, we’re confident she can salute in the penultimate race of the day. The Derby is not just any race. It is the pinnacle of American horse racing from virtually every angle: breeding, owning, training, riding and yes, even betting (who doesn't want bragging rights for picking the winner?). And the Derby race/event has grown to such importance for the entire industry (the hoopla around the Derby as an event got bigger in the preceding years even while horse racing has been struggling), that its import flows far beyond the private parameters of ownership of Churchill Downs, Inc. Derby day is an industry-wide event even though it is run by a private entity. And herein emerges the problem that begs for a resolution. The owners of horses trained by Bob Baffert, in refusing to switch barns in order to get their horses eligible to the Derby race, are, in essence, calling out the management of the Derby race by Churchill and boycotting the race. I write this from the perspective of years of graduate study in political economy during my Ph.D. work. These owners have made (and undoubtedly not deliberately so) a huge first step in challenging the balance of power in the industry between owners/breeders and the racetracks. Churchill, in arbitrarily extending the ban on their trainer and shortening the time for the required transfer of their horses from their chosen trainer to someone else (the transfer date was conspicuously set days before the Robert Lewis prep race at Santa Anita), had, apparently gone too far. Churchill was intrinsically questioning both the owner's management and judgment in the care of their horses. The owners, in turn, by not transferring their horses to another trainer and thus choosing not to run in the Derby, are questioning the management of the Derby race itself by Churchill Inc. The implications from this small group of owner's decisions go far beyond themselves, their trainer and Churchill itself. Not only are these owners challenging Churchill's authority to interfere with the management and use of their property rights, by boycotting this year's Derby, they are preventing (again not deliberately) the breeders of the horses in question from participating in the Derby. This battle of the power of Churchill Inc. over the Derby race with these owners has rippling effects on the breeding industry itself. You breed a top horse, it gets sold and then doesn't get to participate in the Derby because of a battle between Churchill Inc. and a specific trainer that leads to the owners withholding the horse. This situation needs to be resolved. And the power of Churchill Inc. over a race that is now, de facto, an industry race (while proprietary to Churchill Inc.) needs to be curbed so that any similar situation doesn't re-occur. Decisions directly impacting the Derby race need to be subject to countervailing power by the key interest groupings in the industry-with representatives actually in the boardroom concerning key decisions on the Derby race. Such arrangements are not uncommon in business. Even the trainers do not have a voice regarding their own eligibility and seemingly arbitrary decisions regarding their participation. The Derby is the Derby because everyone wants to run their top horses if they are ready for the race. As soon as capable, top horses are not put on the path to the Derby, the race can lose its significance before too long. The Derby race is too important to the industry to be allowed to be run without Industry-wide input to assure its continued impact. –Armen Antonian Ph.D The post Letter To The Editor: Armen Antonian appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Dr. Dana Stead, DVM, has been named Equine Safety and Integrity Veterinarian, according to Churchill Downs Wednesday. In this role, Stead will provide veterinarian support and oversight at all CDI-owned racetracks including at Churchill Downs. Stead joins CDI's Equine Medical Director Dr. William Farmer, DVM, supporting equine safety at the Company's Thoroughbred and Standardbred racetracks across the U.S. Stead will begin his new role on Feb. 5. “I look forward to working together with the horsemen and women across all of CDI's properties and am dedicated to promoting and ensuring the well-being and safety of each of our equine and human athletes,” said Stead. With over 16 years in equine veterinary medicine, Stead also was the owner and operator of his own veterinary practice, serving multiple California-based racetracks, including Santa Anita Park and Del Mar. During that period, his responsibilities ranged from conducting pre-race examinations, emergency triage and serving as the racing veterinary supervisor for 25,000 races, with over 200,000 starters. Stead, who holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University, has also been a member of the Breeders' Cup veterinary team for 14 of the last 15 years. Following a recommendation from its Furosemide Advisory Committee (FAC), the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's Board of Directors approved $773,500 in grant funding for three scientific studies on the use of furosemide (also known as “Lasix”) to be conducted over the next two years by the Nationwide Children's Hospital, the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine and Washington State University, HISA said in a Wednesday release. The studies will examine the 48-hour period before the start of a Covered Horserace, including the effects of furosemide on equine health and the integrity of competition. Researchers will be required to present final reports on their findings to the FAC on or before Jan. 31, 2026. “The Furosemide Advisory Committee is grateful to the expert researchers who responded to our request for proposals and look forward to partnering with Nationwide Children's Hospital, the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine and Washington State University on this important research,” said FAC Chairman Dr. Scott Palmer, VMD. “The lifelong health and well-being of Thoroughbreds is our top priority. This work will help ensure we have policies in place to safeguard these remarkable animals and the integrity of the sport.” Under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, HISA is required to fund scientific research on the topic of furosemide to inform the FAC's future recommendations to the HISA Board on whether and how to amend their existing furosemide regulations. A request for proposals was issued by HISA in August 2023. Out of those submitted, the following were recommended by the FAC and approved: Examining Associations Between Furosemide Treatment & Racehorse Health and Welfare Principal Investigator: Amanda Waller, Bsc, PhD, Research Scientist, Center for Clinical and Translational Research, Nationwide Children's Hospital This study will examine the effects of race day furosemide treatment on the health and welfare of Thoroughbreds as well as their long-term racing performance. An analysis will be conducted to assess the association between pre-race furosemide administration and fatal injury, while also comparing the performance metrics–including lifetime earnings, career length, lifetime starts, starts per year, placings and average speed figures–of horses that raced exclusively on furosemide as 2-year-olds and horses that did not receive furosemide as juveniles. Effects of Repeated Furosemide Administration on Electrolyte Homeostasis and Bone Density in Healthy Adult Exercising Thoroughbreds Principal Investigator: SallyAnne L. DeNotta, DVM, PhD, DACVIM., Clinical Assistant Professor, Large Animal Medicine, University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine This study will examine the effects of repeated furosemide administration on electrolyte homeostasis, parathyroid response and urinary electrolyte excretion in exercising adult Thoroughbreds. The study will also examine the effects of repeated administration on bone density and strength using minimally invasive methods of measurement, including DEXA scan and OsteoProbe. Does Pre-Race Administration of Furosemide to Thoroughbred Racehorses Prolong Their Racing Careers? Principal Investigator: Warwick Bayly, BVSc, PhD, DACVIM, Professor, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Washington State University This study will examine the impact of severe exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) on horses' careers and the health of the racing industry more broadly. In doing so, the study will assess whether regular furosemide treatment is associated with more career starts and greater longevity and the impact of banning furosemide for 2-year-olds on the duration of their careers and number of lifetime starts. The study will also seek to determine the extent to which severe EIPH impacts the number of subsequent starts, the periods between them and, when applicable, the time between the diagnosis of severe EIPH and retirement. By Jonny Turner Wild Bull has a hard act to follow ahead of his debut at Ascot Park on Thursday. The three-year-old is a full brother to Wildwest (pictured above) who made one of the most impressive debut victories seen in Southland in recent history when he scored by more than 12 lengths in his first outing at Winton in 2019. Like Wildwest, Wild Bull is trained by Lauren Pearson and he will be driven by Brent Barclay. Wildwest was exported to Australia after his first win and has since been a Group 1 winner and won 15 from 51 starts, earning over half a million dollars. While it would be nice to see a repeat of what his big brother did, Pearson is keeping her feet well and truly on the ground ahead of three-year-old’s debut. “He is a nice horse but race day is another step up from what he has been doing at the trials,” the trainer said. “Most of his trials have been good, initially Brent wasn’t thrilled with his last one but when he went back and looked at the replay he was happy with it.” “Fingers crossed he can do everything right on Thursday.” Wild Bull will clash with his stablemate Duke Of Scotland in race 8 on Thursday. Duke Of Scotland looks to be getting close to a win following consistent efforts in his last three starts. How the race plays out early for the four-year-old, who follows out a roughie from barrier 2 on the second row, could be crucial to his chances of scoring a deserved win. “He has worked good this week, two on the second row probably isn’t the best,” Pearson said. “He would probably have been better off drawing wider on the front row than there.” “Hopefully he can get a bit of luck.” Nathan Williamson takes the reins behind Duke Of Scotland, while Pearson and Barclay also combine with Without Comparison in race 6. The mare produced the best performance of her career so far when sitting parked and toughing out an impressive last start win at Winton. The four-year-old steps up in class to race more hardened competition in Thursday’s Gold Chip Final, but she does so while he form is on an upward trajectory. “Fingers crossed she does everything right, it is not a big field so hopefully that should help her,” Pearson said. “One thing is that she does try hard when she goes out there.” Pearson also lines up Nek Delight in race 2, with Sarah O’Reilly to do the driving. The mare has drawn in the same awkward spot in barrier eight as she did in her last visit to Ascot Park. “I think in three of her last four starts she has drawn wide,” Pearson said. “She always seems to be last and trying to run on from there.” “It could be the same on Thursday, she just needs a draw.” View the full article

Milton Harris has been ruled not to be a “fit and proper person” to hold a trainer's licence in written reasons issued by the British Horseracing Authority's Licensing Committee. The Warminster handler was found to be in multiple breaches of his licence conditions, with the BHA citing his “misconduct in his dealings with others, including fellow licence holder Mr Simon Earle” and “concerns in respect of safeguarding arising out of MH's conduct with young persons employed at his racing yard”. Harris, who had an enforced absence from the training ranks between 2011 and 2018 due to financial issues, also admitted to being in breach of conditions which were imposed on his licence upon his return. Harris reportedly failed “to be candid in his dealings with the BHA in respect of those breaches, particularly when the BHA was seeking to provide opportunities for MH to remedy those breaches”. In the wake of the ruling, BHA director of integrity and regulatory operations, Tim Naylor said, “Racing is a sport that works hard to provide a safe and welcoming space for all and the ruling of the Licensing Committee in this case sends a clear message that those in positions of authority in our industry must act in a way that upholds these values. “We are grateful to the committee for their time in considering this matter and also to those who came forward to share their experiences of Mr Harris and gave evidence at the hearing. “Some of the details in the Licensing Committee's decision make for extremely uncomfortable reading. Mr Harris's behaviour over a prolonged period of time fell a long way short of what we expect of a licensed person and, as the committee found, would cause damage to racing's reputation if allowed to continue without repercussion. “We are, therefore, pleased with the panel's finding that Mr Harris is not a fit and proper person to hold a licence. “As is clear from the decision, the BHA's concerns ranged across a number of very serious issues. One of these concerns related to safeguarding. The BHA takes its safeguarding responsibilities extremely seriously and, as demonstrated by its bringing this case before the Licensing Committee, will do everything within its powers to ensure that those working in our sport do so in an environment befitting what should rightly be expected by them and, in the case of young people, their parents or guardians upon taking a job in the sport. “The BHA recently published an updated Safeguarding and Human Welfare Strategy, which built on our existing policies and seeks to protect and promote the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in the sport. “As always, we would encourage anybody who feels they have been subjected to or witnessed inappropriate behaviour in our sport to contact us. The BHA's Code of Conduct clearly establishes the standards that everyone involved in racing is expected to uphold and we will never turn a blind eye to concerns raised about conduct which may fall below these standards.” Harris described himself as “disappointed” by the verdict, with a further response planned in the coming days. “I've just seen the decision of the committee and I'm obviously disappointed,” said Harris. “My immediate priority is to look after the horses, owners and long-serving staff here and in the immediate that will be my sole focus. I will make a statement [on the decision] in a few days' time.” The post Milton Harris Has Training Licence Withdrawn appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
