by Michael Guerin Idolou’s improvement curve has been so steep trainer Nicky Chilcott almost feels embarrassed about her next target. “One of her owners and breeders Tom Rodewald always has an end of year staff party at Alexandra Park on Queen Of Hearts night,” says the Cambridge trainer. “So he wants her to race in the Queen of Hearts. I know it sounds silly but, you know, why not.” If you had never seen or heard of Idolou (you are not alone) and only saw her win at Alexandra Park on Friday night you would be pretty sure she can fit in in the Woodlands Queen Of Hearts, the $110,000 group 1 for fillies and mares at Alexandra Park on December 15. She was in against some smart young pacers on Friday and after they burned hard early Idolou was left sitting parked but out-toughed them in the straight to remain unbeaten in three starts. The time of 2:39.3 for 2200m mobile represents a 1:56.5 mile rate and was nearly two seconds faster than what one of the Queen Of Hearts favourites Lady Of The Light paced winning the feature race later on. So Idolou must be pretty good right, an unbeaten filly who can pace open class times? “We thought she was useless,” counters Chilcott. “That is why I came back to the winner’s circle shaking my head. “A few months ago we thought she might not even qualify and I told the owner maybe we should send her down to the Central Districts. “But we gave her a start and on debut she sat in the trail at Cambridge and just won her maiden race. “Then she started from barrier 9 (one on the second line) in her next race and trailed throughout again and again only just won. “So she had only just won two starts at Cambidge and we had to bring her to Alexandra Park but when I saw the field we were in I was furious because I thought she had no chance. “Even now I still don’t think she should have been in that field but she won like a good horse tonight. “I mean after that, I suppose we should give her a crack at the Queen Of Hearts because I have to keep changing my opinion of her every time she starts.” Idolou is an Sweet Lou from President Tomado, who won eight races for Chilcott around 10 years ago when owned by the same partners who bred Idolou and now own her with Chilcott. The win capped a good 24 hours for Chilcott who won the Palmerstonian the night before with Village Rebel. Of course Idolou’s next target is going to be enormously harder as Aardie’s Express will be waiting for her alongside Lady Of The Light, who made it back to back wins in impressive fashion on Friday night. Driven straight to the front by Monika Ranger she won by nearly three lengths and will take a power of beating in three weeks. Other stars of Friday night were American Muscle, who looks in career best form after winning the main trot while earlier Kimkar Dash registered her first win in over two years when she came from last in the junior driver’s trot. She was driven by Neita Balle, who father Derek trains the mare and mother Raelene owns it for a real family affair. View the full article

by Mike Love Ashburton trainer Laurence Hanrahan will head to Phar Lap raceway today with some solid chances, including Mighty Flying Lou in the Timaru Nursery Stakes for 2 year olds. The Sweet Lou colt kept up the lethal Laurence Hanrahan/Ricky May combination when he won on debut at Ashburton last week, and will look to go back to back today with Gerard O’Reilly in the bike, while Ricky May is sidelined through suspension. “He’s trained on well since Ashburton. But it is a nice field today,” said Hanrahan. Hanrahan has always had an opinion of the colt. “He’s a nice strong type of horse with a bit of speed and an unbelievable heart rate,” said Hanrahan. On debut, Mighty Flying Lou settled back for driver Ricky May from the outside of the front line. Still dead last at the 400m, May did not press the go button until the top of the straight where Mighty Flying Lou picked them up brilliantly to win by ½ a length from Thor. “Leo O’Reilly broke him in. And he’s developed into a really nice horse.” Owners Russell Beardsley from Ashburton and Diana Pye from Geraldine had success in recent years with Hanrahan, part-owning Last Of The Mohicans, and for Beardsley even further back to The Tough Nut in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. “Russell has been with me a very long time, he’s been a very loyal owner. The three of us raced a few out of the mare Jaclyn Del that we had success with. But this is the first one we’ve gone and bought at the sales.” Of the main dangers today Dawson for Tony Stratford, Major Hot for Mark and Nathan Purdon, and It’s Tough for Colin and Julie De Filipi will look to give a good account. “Major Hot looks the hardest to beat. If we run second to him we will be very happy.” Hanrahan lines up 3 other runners in addition to Mighty Flying Lou, which he says will all have their chances – perhaps apart from Tanzania, though talented, finds himself in a compromising position taking on multiple race winning horses at only his fourth start in the Timaru Summer cup. “He’s (Tanzania) been thrown under the bus, having only his fourth start against horses that have won five or six. But where else do you go? We will look to get a run on the fence and see where he finishes.” In race 5 Woodbine Rocks is rated a solid chance by Hanrahan. “It’s a race he gets into nicely. His work is very good. If things go his way he should be in the finish.” In race 10 Kalasa will look to settle much handier than in his recent start at Ashburton where he powered home for second from well back. “He’s got a nice draw. If we were to run in the top three or four I’ll be very happy too.” View the full article

Coolmore Stud spent €19m and equalled its own record set for the highest price paid at public auction in Ireland 10 years ago for Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) by flexing its buying power to secure half-sisters Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) and Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) for €6m apiece from the Niarchos draft at the Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale on Friday. Alpine Star, the brilliant G1 Coronation S. winner, and multiple Group 1 and Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Alpha Centauri, carried the Niarchos family's colours with great distinction throughout their glittering careers for trainer Jessica Harrington. Their former stablemate Albigna (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), winner of G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, also featured on Coolmore's shopping list along with That Which Is Not (Elusive Quality), the dam of Irish Derby runner-up Piz Badile (Ire) (Ulysses {Ire}). It was Albigna who broke the million mark on the day but it didn't take long for Alpine Star and Alpha Centauri, who rightly commanded star billing at arguably the most eagerly-anticipated Irish sale in recent times, to steal the show. Bidding from his usual spot to the right of the rostrum and under letter H, MV Magnier saw off Northern Farm for Alpha Centauri, with Yulong's Yuesheng Zhang involved in the running for the 2018 Cartier Horse Of The Year up to €5m. Alpha Centauri was sold in foal to Sea The Stars (Ire) while her half-sister Alpine Star was sold in foal to Frankel (GB) having given birth to a colt foal by the Juddmonte stallion earlier this year. Meanwhile, Alpha Centauri has had one runner to date–the twice placed Saturn (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})–and had a Circus Maximus (Ire) filly last year. Coolmore hasn't built itself up to being one of the powerhouse breeding outfits in the world without having a plan and Magnier revealed after signing for Alpine Star that their dual Derby winner Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) is already being touted for the Kiltinan Castle Stud-drafted Royal Ascot winner. He explained, “When the time comes, we'll probably send her to Auguste Rodin. When Auguste Rodin won the Derby, I'd say it was 30 seconds later when Dad [John] rang me and said, 'this is the most important thing that has happened to Coolmore since Galileo (Ire) won the Derby.' “That horse has absolutely everything–from Deep Impact to his mother being a champion, his grandmother being a champion, he's a Group 1-winning two-year-old and he's a dual Derby winner, Breeders' Cup Turf and Irish Champions Stakes winner as well. He's everything we're looking for and, when the time comes after next year, we're going to really get behind him.” Magnier continued, “She [Alpine Star] was a very good race mare and it's an incredible family. Honestly, all our partners, everyone, we're just delighted to be able to buy these mares off Maria [Niarchos]. “She has been a huge supporter of ours as long as I am alive–like, she is the Godmother to my brother. It just means a lot to us to be able to give back to Maria after all the support she has given us for a very long time.” Harrington, who managed the careers of Alpine Star, Alpha Centauri and Albigna, the winners of 12 races, six of which were Group 1s and well over €2m in prize-money, was in attendance to see the three queens amass €15.7m in the ring. As was Alan Cooper, who has been a part of the Niarchos outfit since the early 1980s, and oversaw Friday's draft in the role as racing manager to the world-famous racing family. He commented, “It's been a great tribute to decades of building these bloodlines. The family would like to thank everybody who has contributed to the success of these families over the decades, from those involved with foaling, right through to training, racing and back to breeding. It's very much mixed emotions, but as we said from the start it's a restructuring. “That's been accomplished in the sense that the bloodlines are spreading out. We've still got access to all of the bloodlines through our two- and three-year-old fillies, yearlings and foals. Even though we've separated from these great race mares, we still have the blood.” Cooper added, “It goes back many decades and it's become global. The Miesque line has been very successful in Japan with Loves Only Me winning at the Breeders' Cup and Real Steel. We had a look last week and descendants from Miesque and her dam, Pasadoble, if I'm not mistaken, include 91 black-type winners.” Just how highly sought after these bloodlines are among some of the biggest breeding operations the world over was evident by the truly international turnout at Goffs on Friday. Juddmonte underbid Albigna, consigned by Baroda Stud, earlier in the session where the Japanese-based Northern Farm once again played a strong hand for much of the bidding war. Magnier commented on €3.7m purchase Albigna, “She is a lovely mare. The whole Niarchos family, they have been very special friends of ours for a long time. We're just very happy that we can continue the relationship.” Albigna has already produced a Wootton Bassett (GB) colt which realised €460,000 as a yearling and had a Dubawi (Ire) filly foal this year. Along with that Group 1 triumph in 2019, Albigna landed the G2 Airlie Stud S. as a two-year-old in a brilliant nine-race career. Magnier added, “These kinds of mares don't come on the market very often and, with this mare, we are lucky that we have very good partners who will support us to try and buy these mares. St Mark's Basilica has had some very good foals and, if she has a good colt by him, it would make it easy to go back.” The post Alpine Star and Alpha Centauri Sell For Record-Equalling €6m Apiece To Coolmore appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Injured jockey Graham Lee was moved closer to home to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough recently. The Grand National-winning jockey and Group 1-winning rider sustained spine and neck injuries in a fall at Newcastle two weeks ago. He was previously based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital in Newcastle. A statement from the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) read, “Graham Lee has now moved to the Spinal Unit at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough where he will remain for the foreseeable future. “He is no longer in ITU but remains on a ventilator, albeit this can be reduced from time to time. “His cervical injury, which was to C3/C4, means that his movement is affected. “His family are pleased that he is now nearer home and remain grateful for the constant support.” The post Graham Lee Transferred Closer To Home In Middlesbrough appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Expected to be the star of the show, champion Alpha Centauri (Mastercraftsman {Ire}–Alpha Lupi {Ire}, by Rahy) did not disappoint and brought a co-session-topping €6 million on the bid of MV Magnier. Also part of the Norelands draft who were selling on behalf of Niarchos family like €3.3-million mare That Which Is Not (Elusive Quality) just three hips prior, the imposing grey (lot 1263) equaled the price of her Sea The Moon (Ger) half-sister and fellow Group 1 winner Alpine Star (Ire) to share topper honours. In foal to Sea The Stars (Ire), Alpha Centauri is also a full-sister to G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Discoveries (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}). A field of 16 horses–14 colts and a pair of 2-year-old fillies–will head to the gate for Saturday's $206,819 Cattleya S., a 1600-meter allowance test going a single left-handed turn at Tokyo Racecourse that serves as the first of four legs on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. Trainer Tetsuya Kimura, who will tighten the girth around favored Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) in Sunday's G1 Japan Cup, sends out American-bred Sonic Star (Into Mischief). Bred in Kentucky by Nancy Shuford, the dark bay was a $300,000 Keeneland September yearling acquisition and has one racetrack appearance under his belt, a 3 1/2-length victory in an 1800-meter event for newcomers at Hanshin back on Sept. 24 (see below, SC 1). Back in third on that occasion was Marcha Real (Jpn) (Real Impact {Jpn}), a half-brother to GI Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine Marche Lorraine (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}), who returned to break his maiden going nine furlongs over a sloppy strip at Kyoto Nov. 11. Sonic Star, to be ridden by the visiting William Buick, is the 5-1 third betting choice in ante-post wagering. Into Mischief is also represented by Bushin, a full-brother to Horse of the Year Authentic, who was placed twice on the turf before breaking his maiden going 1000 meters on the dirt in July. The $800,000 Keeneland September purchase was well-beaten in a local allowance over 1400 meters two weeks back. Holding early favoritism is Rata Forest (Jpn) (Pyro), who will look to build on a seven-length victory over course and distance Oct. 21 (video, SC 9). It will be up to Mirai Iwata to work out a trip from gate 14. Others attracting early support include Amante Bianco (Jpn) (Henny Hughes), a white colt from the family of multiple champion Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune); and O K Birdie (Jpn), a daughter of top dirt sire Sinister Minister who thrashed a field of newcomers by 14 1/2 lengths on Fukushima debut Nov. 5 (see below, SC 2). The Cattleya S. offers Kentucky Derby points on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale to the first five home. The series continues with the Listed Zen-Nippon Nisai Yushun (1600m) at Kawasaki Dec. 13, the Listed Hyacinth S. (1600m) at Tokyo Feb. 18 and the Fukuryu S. (allowance) at Nakayama Mar. 23, with each race offering increased points. The horse that amasses the most points earns a guaranteed spot in the Kentucky Derby. If those connections decline, the offer is extended to each of the next four finishers, in order of points earned. Hailing from the Norelands consignment, That Which Is Not (Elusive Quality–Shiva {Jpn}, by Hector Protector) became the third mare to clear the €3-million mark from the Niarchos family's bloodstock restructuring, with MV Magnier shelling out €3.3 million at Goffs late in the session. Rigney Racing's Xigera (Nyquist), the 6 1/2-length GIII Falls City S. winner on Thanksgiving Day, will enjoy a planned break this winter before targeting next year's GI La Troienne S. on Kentucky Derby weekend, according to trainer Phillip Bauer. The Kentucky-based conditioner won last year's Falls City with now-retired Played Hard (Into Mischief) who returned five months later to win the La Troienne by a neck over GI Longines Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath (Arrogate). “We're going to take her to the sidelines for the winter and hopefully take the same course as we did last year with Played Hard and target the La Troienne,” said Bauer. “Our year-end goal next year will be the Breeders' Cup. We got bit with the injury bug this year with Played Hard who we retired and never got to make it to the Breeders' Cup. Hopefully Xigera can fill Played Hard's shoes now that she's out of the barn.” The 3-year-old's victory in Falls City was her fifth win from six starts this year. Bauer successfully switched Xigera to the dirt three starts ago in the Seneca Overnight S. Sept. 23 before taking home the GII Mother Goose S. by 3 1/2 lengths during the Belmont at the Big A meet Oct. 28. Xigera gave Rigney and Bauer three wins on the holiday card. The duo won race nine with veteran Angkor (Anchor Down) and race 12 with 2-year-old first time starter Legadema (Arrogate).
