  2. Babylon Berlin will contest the Group 3 Counties Bowl (1200m) at Pukekohe on Saturday. Photo: Trish Dunell Ben Foote enjoyed an outstanding first session at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale and he’s got the firepower to continue the party at Pukekohe. The Cambridge-based horseman celebrated a 100 percent clearance rate at Karaka on Wednesday and on Saturday will look to top sprinter Babylon Berlin to continue her winning roll. “We sold six out of six through Ohukia Lodge, so I was pretty happy and got $300,000 for one by Frosted,” Foote said. The colt represented a memorable pinhook after he was bought for A$40,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale and was secured this week by Hong Kong interests. He is out of the Smart Missile mare Launched, who is a half-sister to the multiple Group Two winner and Group One placegetter Tally. The weekend focus for Foote, who trains with son Ryan, will be on stable star Babylon Berlin’s tilt at the Group 3 Counties Bowl (1200m). The All Too Hard mare successfully resumed earlier this month in the Listed Legacy Lodge Sprint (1200m) at Te Rapa where she capitalised on a tidy run in the trail to account for the well-performed Maven Belle. “I was pretty stoked, she’s never raced in behind them like that before, so it was really good to see,” Foote said. “Even though she was on the fresh side, she took a sit and that was very pleasing going forward.” Foote’s confidence has been further boosted by the engagement of champion jockey Opie Bosson. “I’ve got the best on her on Saturday, so I don’t really have to tell him what to do,” he said. Babylon Berlin will make her final race day appearance before attempting a deserved Group One victory in the Railway Stakes (1200m), a race she has twice placed in as well as the Group 1 Telegraph (1200m) and the Group 1 Waikato Sprint (1400m). “There isn’t anything for her so it will be a trial and exhibition gallops to get her ready,” Foote said. He is also looking forward to seeing Nancy She Wrote back in action when she makes her return. The lightly raced daughter of Wrote was spelled after winning once from five appearances last season and came off her maiden victory at Hastings to finish fifth in the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) at Trentham. “She had a little spur on a fetlock that could have been there before she raced,” Foote said. “We had that tidied up and she’s come back a treat. I’ve been super happy with her trials as well.” More horse racing news View the full article
  3. What Alice Springs Races Where Pioneer Park Racecourse – Stuart Hwy, Connellan NT 0870 When Saturday, November 25, 2023 First Race 3:05pm ACST Visit Dabble Just 32 runners have accepted for the Alice Springs Turf Club’s five-event meeting at Pioneer Park on Saturday, but it all points to yet another good day of racing. Can Red Wraith make it five wins in a row for trainer Paul Gardner? That should capture the imagination of the racing public, as well as the clash between Great Buy and Supreme Times in the other feature race on the program. Alice Springs received 57mm of rain from November 17-19, and there is a slight chance of more rain before the weekend. The forecast for Saturday is for partly cloudy conditions with east to north-easterly winds. There is the chance of showers and a thunderstorm, with a top temperature of 35C expected. The rail will be in the true position and Pioneer Park will be a good dirt surface. BEST BET: RED WRAITH Without question the Red Centre’s in-form horse, this four-year-old gelding is aiming for a fifth-straight win. He broke the track record for 1100m (1:01.87) when overcoming 0-70 opposition by almost four lengths a fortnight ago. He will carry a similar weight in the five-horse field, and it’s hard to see the son of Charm Spirit losing, especially if he controls the race out in front. Boy Big, third behind Red Wraith after missing the kick two weeks ago, Throw At Da Stumps and Magnolia Rose will be competitive, but Red Wraith is flying and looks nigh-on unstoppable. Best Bet Race 3 – #2 Red Wraith (3) 4yo Gelding | T: Paul Gardner | J: Sonja Logan (57kg) Bet with Betfair NEXT BEST: RUPERT’S DELIGHT Rupert’s Delight been a solid performer for the Lamprecht stable since arriving from the Cranbourne stable of Robbie Griffiths and Mathew de Kock, where he had 20 starts without a win but finished in the top four on 15 occasions. The son of Winning Rupert has been competitive in the Red Centre with two wins from nine starts, as well as five minor placings. His first win was a 1100m maiden in December before saluting in 0-58 grade in April. Rupert’s Delight hadn’t raced since July before returning in early November, finishing a solid third over 1100m at Class 2 level. Next Best Race 1 – #1 Rupert’s Delight (7) 5yo Gelding | T: Kevin Lamprecht | J: Ianish Luximon (a2) (60kg) Bet with Bet365 BEST VALUE: RADIO ROOM Radio Room missed the kick two weeks ago and was a clear last place in the nine-horse field before clicking into gear at the 600m of the 1100m affair. The nine-year-old gelding then made ground along the rails in impressive style before finishing 2.5 lengths adrift of Talent Quest in third place. To make up so much ground certainly caught the eye, and although he has another wide gate, he drops a further 2kg with his rider claiming 3kg. The son of Chatline has had 35 Pioneer Park starts since February 2020, with his record standing at 7-7-4. 4. What Railway Stakes Day Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104 When Saturday, November 25, 2023 First Race 2:05pm AWST Visit Dabble The second day of The Pinnacles will be held at Ascot Racecourse this Saturday afternoon, with the Group 1 Railway Stakes headlining a massive nine-race card. Hot and dry weather is expected all week, so even though the track is rated a Good 4, expect the ground to firm up over the course of the day. Due to the extreme heat, the first race will jump at 2:05pm AWST. Check out our Railway Stakes preview and $100 betting strategy here WA Guineas Tip: Super Smink The Group 2 WA Guineas is all about the two fillies in the 14-horse field. We are siding with Super Smink, who is seeking revenge on Keshi Boom after she was beaten convincingly last start in the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes. The Daniel Morton-trained galloper has won at both Group 2 and Group 3 level but is yet to stretch out over 1600m in her seven-start career. Although the top two are tough to split, this daughter of Super One has drawn a much better barrier (3). That will allow Chris Parnham to settle closer to the speed, which should prove to be the pivotal factor in the finish. WA Guineas Race 7 – #13 Super Smink (3) 3yo Filly | T: Daniel Morton | J: Chris Parnham (54.5kg) +210 with Betfair Carbine Club Of WA Stakes Tip: Vast Art Vast Art returns from a 17-week spell as he seeks his seventh win from 14 starts. The Darren McAuliffe-trained galloper won four on the bounce last preparation before recording consecutive runner-up finishes in his last two starts. Clint Johnston-Porter will be looking to add to his strong record (5:4-1-0) aboard this talented galloper. From barrier one, Vast Art should be able to settle in the box seat and get all the favours in the run before peeling off the leaders’ heels to let down with his customary turn of foot. Carbine Club Of WA Stakes Race 6 – #4 Vast Art (1) 4yo Gelding | T: Darren McAuliffe | J: Clint Johnston-Porter (56.5kg) +450 with Picklebet A.J. Scahill Cup Tip: Casino Seventeen Last start, Casino Seventeen was a tragedy when beaten as a well-backed favourite in the Listed Luckygray Stakes over 1800m at this track. After settling on the rail, William Pike attempted to get this gelding into the clear but was blocked at a crucial stage in the home straight before changing tracks to run home strongly into fourth place. On Saturday, this son of Casino Prince should be able to settle in the one-one position from barrier three, and if he gets clear air and time to build his momentum on the home turn, Casino Seventeen should be winning. A.J. Scahill Cup Race 5 – #1 Casino Seventeen (3) 6yo Gelding | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: William Pike (59kg) +135 with Neds Best Bet at Ascot: Playz With Fire Playz With Fire kicked off this preparation with consecutive second-place finishes over 1200m and will step up in distance to 1400m third-up, where he appears to have found a very winnable race. Last start, this five-year-old mare settled too far back and had to wait for a gap to appear in a wall of horses at the top of the home straight before letting down with a blistering turn of foot over the final 200m. This daughter of Playing God has drawn barrier four and should be able to settle much closer to the speed. With William Pike retaining the ride, Playz With Fire should prove very hard to hold out. Best Bet Race 2 – #9 Playz With Fire (4) 5yo Mare | T: Rob Gulberti | J: William Pike (56kg) +280 with Boombet Next Best at Ascot: Saloon Bar Saloon Bar overcame the on-speed pattern at Ascot last start, coming from near-last on the home turn to finish over the top of his rivals and claim a narrow victory over 1200m. The four-year-old gelding has a lethal turn of foot when he gets the race run to suit, and there looks to be an abundance of speed in this one. We expect this event to be run at a frantic tempo, which should set it up perfectly for this son of Sessions to settle slightly worse than midfield before pulling out wide to let down with his explosive finish. 5. What The Gong Race Day Where Kembla Grange Racecourse – Princes Hwy, Kembla Grange NSW 2526 When Saturday, November 25, 2023 First Race 12:20pm AEDT Visit Dabble New South Wales metropolitan racing heads to Illawarra on Saturday afternoon, with The Gong (1600m) and its $1 million purse headlining a massive 10-race program at Kembla Grange. The rail is set in the true position for the entire circuit, and with consistent showers likely to hit the course in the lead-up, expect the current Good 4 surface to be downgraded into the Soft range on Saturday. The first race is scheduled for 12:20pm AEDT. The Gong: Osipenko Osipenko brings the strongest form to this year’s edition of The Gong after contesting in elite Group 1 company. The son of Pierro ran third in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) on September 16 before being outmatched in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 7. The four-year-old only had one official jump-out since, and as James McDonald takes the reins for the first time, The Gong must be considered the last chance for Osipenko to secure victory this campaign. The Gong Race 7 – #3 Osipenko (10) 4yo Horse | T: Chris Waller | J: James McDonald (58.5kg) +260 with Bet365 The Warra: Dragonstone Dragonstone returns from a 98-day spell as the Joseph Pride-trained galloper tackles The Warra (1000m). The gelding by Mikki Isle held ground behind Buenos Noches in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick on August 19 before being tipped out for spell, and he looks set for a first-up peak after two strong jump-outs. Tim Clark will ride the five-year-old, and with a strong tempo likely, Dragonstone should get the last crack at his rivals. The Warra Race 8 – #6 Dragonstone (4) 5yo Gelding | T: Joseph Pride | J: Tim Clark (55.5kg) +450 with Neds Best Bet at Kembla Grange: Headwall Headwall has never missed the frame in six career starts, and we’re confident that trend will continue as he returns after 224 days off the scene. The now four-year-old has been terrific at the barrier trials, going on to score in his latest at Rosehill on November 6. Blake Spriggs will be searching for a soft run in transit from barrier four, and provided he can gain a mid-field position with cover, Headwall will be producing a stunning turn of foot late in the afternoon. Best Bet Race 9 – #5 Headwall (4) 5yo Gelding | T: Matthew Smith | J: Blake Spriggs (58kg) +360 with Betfair Next Best at Kembla Grange: Touristic Touristic is building nicely to a third-up victory as he heads to Kembla Grange for the first time. The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained five-year-old hasn’t been far off the pace in his two runs back from a spell, with the latest a grinding effort over the 1800m at Rosehill on November 11. Getting to the 2000m is ideal for this son of Frankel, and with the Soft track conditions only a positive, Touristic should be close to grabbing his second Australian win. Next Best Race 1 – #1 Touristic (4) 5yo Gelding | T: Peter & Paul Snowden | J: Tom Sherry (61kg) +240 with Unibet Best Value at Kembla Grange: Leandra Leandra produced a solid return at Rosehill on November 4, bounding into third place in a competitive BM78 for the fillies & mares. She meets a similar field on Saturday, with a few key rivals backing up from that race, and we’re surprised by the each-way price available with online bookmakers. There should be a stronger tempo for the daughter of Choisir to sprint off, and with her run just as impressive first-up as the likes of Junqueira and Shohei, Leandra can do a job at a big price. 6. What Morphettville Races Where Morphettville Racecourse – 79 Morphett Rd, Morphettville, SA 5043 When Saturday, November 25, 2023 First Race 12:17pm ACDT Visit Dabble An extremely competitive nine-race card awaits punters on Saturday afternoon at Morphettville for Finals Day. With rain forecast leading into the meeting, we expect to be on a Soft 6 at best, and with rain predicted on raceday, it would be no surprise if the track deteriorates further. The rail returns to the true position, with an action-packed day of racing scheduled to start at 12:17pm ACDT. Best Bet at Morphettville: Queman Queman has strung together two impressive wins to begin his campaign and now steps up to the 1200m. The five-year-old gelding managed to stalk the speed throughout over 1000m on November 11 before producing a strong finishing burst to put 2.5 lengths on his rivals. He draws in barrier eight on Saturday, and Justin Potter should have no issue landing the son of Mint Lane in a plumb spot once again. If Queman can replicate his last two efforts, he should be bringing up a third win in as many starts. Best Bet Race 7 – #2 Queman (8) 5yo Gelding | T: Shaun & Cassie Oxlade | J: Justin Potter (60kg) +210 with Picklebet Next Best at Morphettville: All Beans Justin Pickering’s All Beans has strung together three strong performances this campaign, including a win and a close second in his last two starts at Morphettville. He is on the quick backup from his runner-up effort behind La Defense over the 1050m last weekend, where he was simply unable to go with the eventual winner inside the final 100m. The son of Spill The Beans will look to gain the lead under Margaret Collett from barrier three, and with the apprentice claiming 3kg, All Beans will go around with just 53kg on his back and should prove too hard to gun down this time. Next Best Race 3 – #3 All Beans (2) 5yo Gelding | T: Justin Pickering | J: Margaret Collett (a3) (56kg) +290 with Betfair Best Value at Morphettville: Hasta La Fiorente We were with the Sue Murphy-trained Hasta La Fiorente when he saluted over 2500m on November 18, and on the quick seven-day backup, we’re happy to side with him once again. He only just held on last weekend but was left exposed a long way out from home, so the win was much better than what it may read on paper. He draws barrier one here, so Domenic Tourneur can have the son of Fiorente stalking the speed throughout. We know he will see out the trip, with three wins to his name already at 2500m, and at a nice price, Hasta La Fiorente looks a great play. 7. What Doomben Races Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, November 25, 2023 First Race 12:03pm AEST Visit Dabble Doomben Racecourse will hosts its second metropolitan meeting in three days this Saturday afternoon, with the Listed Recognition Stakes and Eureka Stud Classic headlining a 10-race program. As the weather is set to clear up and allow the track to dry out, expect the rating to improve towards the Soft range come raceday. The rail will move from the +10m position to the +4m position, meaning the track may play favourably to runners closer to the inside rail. The action at Doomben will kick off at 12:03pm AEST. Recognition Stakes Tip: Zarastro After finishing second in the Keith Noud Quality last start, the Tony Gollan-trained Zarastro will be seeking his first black-type win at the third time of asking. This five-year-old gelding led the field up last start and was only beaten by Extremist, who settled behind him and took over with 150m to go. This son of I Am Invincible has drawn wide in barrier 13 but has the speed to overcome that and should be able to find the front upon settling. With Angela Jones staying in the saddle, Zarastro will hug the rail at the top of the home straight and give a strong kick to lead all the way to victory. Recognition Stakes Race 8 – #13 Zarastro (13) 5yo Gelding | T: Tony Gollan | J: Angela Jones (53kg) +160 with Dabble Eureka Stud Classic Tip: Extremist Extremist was a very strong winner of the Listed Keith Noud Quality last start, where she drew away from the rest of the field to record a 1.3-length victory at this track and trip. The five-year-old mare will have to work across from barrier nine to settle in the first three or potentially lead. If this daughter of Extreme Choice does find the front, Robbie Dolan can run the race to suit his mount and roll around the home bend before upping the ante at the 300m mark and giving a massive sight out in front. Eureka Stud Classic Race 8 – #11 Extremist (9) 5yo Mare | T: Robert Heathcote | J: Robbie Dolan (57kg) +600 with Betfair Best Bet at Doomben: Emperor Emperor returned from a 21-week spell in a Class 3 Handicap at Randwick on November 7, where he settled close to the speed and let down with a blistering turn of foot to run away with an arrogant two-length victory over 1000m. On Saturday, this son of I Am Invincible will return to a track where he is undefeated from two starts. Stepping up in distance to 1110m second-up should be ideal for this four-year-old gelding, and if James Orman can push forward and settle in the first six, Emperor will just need even luck to bring up back-to-back victories. Best Bet Race 10 – #16 Emperor (3) 4yo Gelding | T: Matthew Dunn | J: James Orman (57.5kg) +110 with Boombet Next Best at Doomben: Tojaki We were with Tojaki last start when she won at this track and distance on November 11. The four-year-old mare handled the class rise and improved her career record to three wins and two placings from six starts. The daughter of Zoustar appears to be the only leader in this race, so with a good jump from barrier six, Tojaki should be able to cruise across to the rail and lead all the way en route to her fourth win of the preparation. Next Best Race 6 – #15 Tojaki (9) 4yo Mare | T: Stuart Kendrick | J: Robbie Dolan (56.5kg) +320 with PlayUp Best Value at Doomben: Happisburgh Happisburgh was very unlucky last start at this track and trip, where he went for a run along the inside rail but was blocked by the slowing leader and lost all of his momentum. Two starts back, the six-year-old gelding ran home strongly into third place over 1600m at Eagle Farm. After drawing barrier 10 this weekend, Martin Harley can settle midfield on the outside of runners before making his move at the 500m mark. With an abundance of speed expected, the race should be run to suit Happisburgh, who will be finishing off strongly in the concluding stages. 8. What Cranbourne Cup Day 2023 Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977 When Saturday, November 25, 2023 First Race 12:10pm AEDT Visit Dabble Metropolitan racing in Victoria heads to Cranbourne Turf Club on Saturday afternoon, with a stacked 10-race meeting scheduled. The Listed Cranbourne Cup (1600m) is the marquee event of the day, with a strong field of 11 accepted. Persistent rain is forecast on Saturday, so we expect the current Good 4 rating to deteriorate to the Soft range throughout the card. The rail comes out 3m for the entire circuit, with the Cranbourne Cup Day card commencing at 12:10pm AEDT. Cranbourne Cup Top Tip: Just Folk Just Folk was only defeated by 2.15 lengths in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) behind the likes of Prowess, Antino and Tuvalu on October 28, and he looks the one to beat in Saturday’s Cranbourne Cup. The seven-year-old gelding comes to the $500,000 feature third-up, where he holds a record of three wins from six goes. The son of Magnus will relish any rain that falls, and he brings the right formlines into Listed company. From barrier nine, Beau Mertens will look to have this bloke settled outside the lead, and from there he should prove a touch too classy. Cranbourne Cup Race 9 – #2 Just Folk (9) 7yo Gelding | T: Gavin Bedggood | J: Beau Mertens (58.5kg) +550 with Neds Best Bet at Cranbourne: Wiggum Travis Doudle’s Wiggum was a strong winner during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in arguably a tougher race that he faces on Saturday. The three-year-old gelding got the better of Barber down the Flemington straight over 1000m, and stepping up to the 1200m fourth-up looks to be a recipe for success. He gains the services of Damian Lane for the first time, and from barrier five the pair can stalk what looks to be a chaotic pace on paper. With even luck, Wiggum should prove too hard to hold out once again. Best Bet Race 2 – #2 Wiggum (5) 3yo Gelding | T: Travis Doudle | J: Damian Lane (58kg) +210 with Betfair Next Best at Cranbourne: Jimmysstar Jimmysstar looks to be a horse on the way up, and his win at Bendigo on November 1 suggests he is more than capable of saluting in Class 3 company. Despite being held up for a run until the final 100m on that day, the son of Per Incanto produced a stunning turn of foot to put 1.25 lengths on his rivals in what was a dominant display. Craig Williams will likely have Jimmysstar settled towards the rear of the field from barrier 12, but with a similar turn of foot, in a race where he is clearly the best horse, he should just be winning again. Next Best Race 10 – #5 Jimmysstar (12) 4yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Craig Williams (60kg) +170 with Picklebet Best Value at Cranbourne: South Of Houston South Of Houston was thrown into the deep end upon return in the Group 3 Begonia Belle Stakes (1100m), but with a massive drop back in grade, we’re happy to side with her second-up. The four-year-old mare broke her maiden when second-up last campaign, and a race like this looks well within her capabilities. Jye McNeil should have no issue crossing the field from barrier 12 and controlling proceedings throughout the 1000m scamper. With a cheap sectional or two, South Of Houston will take some running down in this BM70. 9. Vincent Ho guides M Unicorn to victory at the Valley. Karis Teetan, Vincent Ho and Lyle Hewitson will compete in the International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) on December 6 after the trio secured the final three places in the series at Happy Valley on Wednesday night (22 November). In the absence of injured Hugh Bowman (21 wins), Teetan (20) qualified as the next best-performed rider behind Zac Purton (31), while Vincent Ho (13) claimed his place as the leading homegrown rider from Matthew Chadwick (seven). After a four-way tussle involving Hewitson, Brenton Avdulla, Andrea Atzeni and Luke Ferraris for the remaining slot came down to the last race of the final meeting in the IJC qualifying period, Hewitson edged out Avdulla on a countback with more third placings. Ferraris had made a late surge by winning on Scotch Tycoon for Mark Newnham to draw level with Avdulla, Hewitson and Atzeni with two races left on the card but ultimately Hewitson’s third placing on Brave Star behind David Hall-trained Never Too Soon, under Keagan De Melo, sealed the issue. Avdulla, Atzeni and Ferraris could have snared the final spot with a win – or in Avdulla’s case a second placing – but the trio finished behind Hewitson in a blanket finish. Hewitson will appear in the IJC for the third time after totalling 10 wins, 14 seconds and 19 thirds compared to Avdulla’s 10 wins, 14 seconds and eight thirds – having started the night with fewer seconds than Avdulla. “My unlucky one of the night – Happy Tango (second in the opening event) – saved me, so I’m very grateful for that. Look, there’s no secret – we made it in by default but, with that said, someone had to step up to the plate and I’m glad it’s me,” the South African said. “I’ve competed in two IJCs previously. Hopefully it will be third time lucky.” Teetan, Ho and Hewitson join Purton, James McDonald, Ryan Moore, Yuga Kawada, Hollie Doyle, Tom Marquand, Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, Rachel King and Mickael Barzalona in the HK$1 million contest, with the competition winner earning HK$600,000. Teetan crowned his IJC selection with victory aboard Douglas Whyte-trained Splendid Star, the first leg of a double for the Mauritian. “To ride on IJC night against the world’s finest jockeys who will be here – the Club puts on a night you will remember forever – so to be part of that, it’s fantastic,” Teetan said. “It’s a pleasure to get the support – without the support you just can’t do it. Last season, I was a bit sick and mentally and physically it wasn’t easy, but when you don’t give up, it’s rewarding. “I just try to win on every horse I ride and try to give them the best chance.” Teetan sealed his brace as Pierre Ng’s Quantum Patch collected a HK$1.5 million PP Bonus with victory. Ho cemented his place atop Caspar Fownes-trained M Unicorn. “I’ll have fun in the IJC again against the top jockeys in the world, I’m really looking forward to it. It’s another learning opportunity for myself – everything is about learning, so riding against those guys will be amazing,” Ho said. Ho proceeded to a race-to-race double when Happy United swept down the outside to give Jamie Richards a double. Richards and Antoine Hamelin combined for their first winner of the season when Ernest Feeling surged to a clearcut success. Alfred Chan notched his first win of the season with a clever ride on David Hayes-trained Samarkand. “It’s awesome,” Chan said. “It’s been frustrating because I’ve had three seconds for my boss (Caspar Fownes) this season, so to win this race tonight is great. I’ve been working hard and trying my best, so it’s a great result.” More horse racing news View the full article
  10. After serving a one-week suspension for careless riding, Sonja Wiseman is looking to get back to winning ways at Pioneer Park this weekend. With a decent book of rides at Alice Springs on Saturday, Darwin jockey Sonja Logan could have another good day on the five-race card at Pioneer Park. Logan sealed back-to-back winning trebles in the Red Centre on November 4 and 11. Fresh from serving a suspension that caused her to miss last Saturday’s Fannie Bay meeting, Logan will set out to extend her lead in the Alice Springs jockeys’ premiership. Central Australia’s reigning champion has seven wins this season, putting her two wins clear of Darwin’s Adam Nicholls and Alice Springs apprentices Dakota Gillett and Lek Maloney. Three of her rides this weekend — Red Wraith, Great Buy and Omoplata — were last-start winners with Logan in the saddle. Typically Brazen and Perkova are her other two engagements. Red Wraith, Paul Gardner’s four-year-old gelding, will be aiming for five straight wins when he lines up in a field of five at BM76 level over 1000m. “He’s absolutely flying and broke the track record for the 1100m (1:01.87) two weeks ago,” Logan said. “I don’t want to jinx him or anything like that — I’m a bit superstitious — but the horse is improving with every run. “With a good draw, hopefully we can continue the good run. “He’s getting better going around to the gates, he was naughty in the early days. “Paul is finding ways to keep him settled. “I ride him to the gates with no irons — just sit on his back and keep him happy, that seems to be working. “Boy Big missed the kick badly last start, but he still ran third behind Red Wraith. “Going on recent form he’s a bit of a danger and will probably be the hardest to beat.” Alice Springs Race 4 replay – Red Wraith – J: Sonja Logan Great Buy, Terry Gillett’s seven-year-old gelding, can make it three wins from his last four starts in an open handicap over 1400m comprising five runners. “He’s an absolute machine of an animal and he gave me a good feel — when you’re on top of him, he’s just big and strong,” Logan said. “His win the other day was really good, he would have given the good sprint horse Supreme Attraction a run for his money had it not been scratched. “Very excited to see where he goes, he’ll be a nice horse whether I’m on him or not. “I honestly think Supreme Times, second behind Great Buy a fortnight ago, will be the hardest to beat. “It’s only won once over 1400m, but I definitely think it will be the biggest challenger.” Lisa Whittle’s Omoplata meets BM54 opposition over 1100m, Leanne Gillett’s Typically Brazen faces a Class 2 field over 1200m, and Gardner’s Perkova confronts 0-64 company over 1600m. “Omoplata, he’s ‘Mr Consistent’, that’s for sure — a nice big horse, he always puts in 110 per cent,” Logan said. “Not last start, but the start before, I clipped heels early in the race and he started to hang out and finished eighth — you can only ignore that run. “Typically Brazen, I actually like this horse — she’s a nice mare. “She gave me a good feel when I rode her over 1400m last start. “Got a lot of speed, Terry and Leanne always have their horses looking well on race day. “They’ll add a Tongue Control and Lugging Bit this week, but I wouldn’t dismiss her. “I haven’t ridden Perkova, so I don’t know a lot about him. “Paul’s horses are looking well and feeling well, you can’t knock their form. “Hopefully, I can get another win for them – it would be nice.” After a much-publicised assault in July before marrying Darwin trainer Tom Logan in August, it was perhaps no surprise to see Logan make a slow start to the 2023/24 campaign. “The assault was probably on the back of my mind for a while, even when I was riding,” she said. “It took a bit to get that momentum going again, and I guess feel safe at home and at the track. “Then there was the obvious high of marrying Tommy. “I was hoping I’d come back and fire straight away, but it has taken time to get back to what it was. “I’ve had a bit of luck now, hopefully it continues throughout the season. “Alice Springs is a good track to ride on and I’ve been riding some nice horses of late. “I’m really happy with my rides this week.” Logan was disappointed to incur a one-meeting suspension after guiding Tayarn Halter’s City Regal to victory in Darwin on Melbourne Cup Day. Logan, who has five Darwin wins this season after finishing second in the 2022/23 Top End jockeys’ premiership, was found guilty of careless riding before having her appeal dismissed. “The last time I was suspended was three years ago, it’s been a while,” she said. “I haven’t even been reprimanded in that time.” More horse racing news View the full article

  12. Thursday’s second day of the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale saw a new all-time record price of $825,000 for a Star Turn colt whose future lies in Hong Kong. The colt was catalogued as Lot 376 and went through the Karaka sale ring in the last 30 minutes of the sale’s final day. Offered by KB Bloodstock, the colt is closely related to the four-time Group One winner Criterion and had clocked 10.24 seconds in a slick breeze-up. The record-breaking colt was bought by Hong Kong owner Pato Leung, who was represented at Karaka by trainer Benno Yung and his daughter Samantha. “We’ve looked at a lot of good horses at the sale today, and the Star Turn really stood out to us,” Samantha Yung said. “He’s a really nice mover and has a very strong build. Samantha and Benno Yung Photo: Trish Dunell “He has a great temperament from what we’ve seen so far. The amount that we paid may have been a little more than we were expecting, but we feel that he will do well for the owner. “Star Turn has been doing well in Hong Kong, and that’s another reason why we were interested in buying this horse. “We do think that he’ll be a powerful sprinter, but with time, he may be able to go further as well.” Lot 376 was the second time on Thursday that the $800,000 sale-topping price from Wednesday’s opening session was either equalled or surpassed. Earlier on Thursday, Hong Kong bloodstock agent Willie Leung went to $800,000 to secure Riversley Park’s gelding by All Too Hard out of the Mossman mare Tuscany Lady. The gelding was catalogued as and had breezed up in 10.34 seconds. He was bought on behalf of owner Mr Yeung Kin Man, with the Yungs as underbidders. Lot 289, a colt by All Too Hard fetched $800,000 to the bid of leading buyer Mr Yeung Kin Man Photo: Trish Dunell “Mr Yeung has about 10 horses racing in Hong Kong already and he is a genuine racing fan and would love to have more good horses in Hong Kong,” Leung said. “That’s why he wanted to go for some stock here, so we can go through the selection process to find a Group One horse. “They will be here for education and training and then we’ll do some assessment. They will probably be ready to go, but some will need to be qualified as a PP for Hong Kong and so we’ll keep them racing here. “All Too Hard is a very consistent and useful sire in Hong Kong, and the Group One winner Wellington has performed really well in Hong Kong and on grass and synthetic and so he suits Hong Kong. This one looks really precocious, and so hopefully we can get him going to Hong Kong early next season. “It’s a good sale with plenty of good horses, and New Zealand Bloodstock did a great job to bring a lot of Hong Kong buyers and that’s probably why the market is so strong. There’s strong competition between Hong Kong owners. It’s a good sign that there’s so many owners willing to spend on quality stock.” It means that all of the sale’s three-sale toppers were snapped up by Hong Kong buyers. Wednesday’s $800,000 top lot, a colt by Harry Angel from the draft of Kilgravin Lodge, was bought by Tartan Meadow Bloodstock in partnership with agent Andrew Williams. Thursday’s highest-priced purchase by an Australasian-based buyer was Lot 298, a Super Seth half-sister to this year’s Gr.1 Queensland Derby (2400m) winner and Gr.1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) runner-up Kovalica. The Kilgravin Lodge filly was bought by Queensland’s Laming Racing and John White Bloodstock for $700,000. Lot 298, a Super Seth half-sister to Group One winner Kovalica Photo: Trish Dunell “She was a standout on looks,” Richard Laming said. “She was one of my top picks. We valued her up to $600,000 and had to go a little bit more than that, but we’ve got a really nice filly. “She’s a proper horse. She’s got a nice action, she breezed up great. She has a very good attitude and was nice and relaxed in the ring, so we’re very happy to get her. “We like Super Seth. We’ve got a couple we bought as yearlings that go good. We came over here to buy another nice one, and she’s got a great pedigree, great residual and she’s an outstanding individual. She breezed up good. She had plenty going for her. “She’s a half to a Group One winner who’s a very good horse, so she’s got that scope to hopefully show some of her brother’s ability.” The Super Seth filly headlined a mixed couple of days for Laming, whose other purchases included the $550,000 Contributer half-brother to Hong Kong’s superstar sprinter Lucky Sweynesse. However, he was also underbidder on a Written Tycoon colt that was bought by Blandford Bloodstock for $725,000. “We also bought Lot 303 – a Reliable Man filly for $35,000,” Laming said. “We liked the pedigree. There’s a lot of winners on the page. She’s a horse that will need time, she’ll stay over here for about six months and will probably go out now. But we like the Reliable Man fillies, we’ve got a couple that we like, so we took a punt on a cheap one. “We really liked Lot 45 on the first day – we had a good go at him. He was well sold and well bought. We managed to come away with a really nice colt yesterday, the half to Lucky Sweynesse. He’s a cracker and we thought we got him at a good price, so overall we’re very happy.” View the full article
  13. Former champion jockey Douglas Whyte boosted the ranks of his emerging training operation with a Karaka buying bench debut during the Ready to Run Sale on Thursday. The winner of 13 consecutive jockeys’ premierships in Hong Kong between 2000-01 and 2012-13, Whyte has been training since the 2019-20 season and has already saddled more than 180 winners. Russian Emperor has been a headline act with three wins at Group One level, while Stronger took out the Centenary Sprint Cup (1200m). Whyte teamed up with Sam Wright’s Equine Investments and bloodstock agent Bevan Smith to buy Lot 203 for $500,000 on Thursday afternoon. Offered by Riversley Park, the colt is by Zoustar and is closely related to the Group winners Alma’s Fury and Championship. Lot 203, a Zoustar colt out of Reconstruct sold for $500,000 Photo: Trish Dunell That was followed by another purchase for the team later in the day, securing Lot 318 for $290,000. The gelding by Wrote was consigned by BMD Bloodstock Ltd. “I have been to Karaka previously, but I haven’t bought here before,” Whyte said. “I haven’t been training for that long, so it’s the first time I’ve stuck my neck out and purchased horses here, but it’s been good. “This is where it all starts, really. You’ve got to get the young ones to keep the yard ticking over. I’ve got a nice crop of young horses now, who you just have to get them to develop the right way. “I’ve got a couple of older horses at the moment who are close to the end of their tether. The young ones are what you’re here for, and they’re going to make or break my yard.” Smith played a key role in the acquisition of Lot 203, leaning on the expertise of vendor Sam Beatson. “Sam Beatson’s as good as anyone in the industry at doing these breeze-ups and preparing horses,” Smith said. “From day one, I’ve stayed in contact with Sam and he was saying, ‘This is the horse, this is the horse.’ “It gives you confidence buying off someone like Sam when he gives you a nudge for a horse. He sold Golden Sixty and hopefully this horse can live up to that kind of tag.” Wright has been a friend of Whyte’s since he was a young boy and has become an integral part of the trainer’s fledgling operation. “We work together on pretty much everything, we’re very close friends,” Wright said. “We run what I like to think is a tight ship. “Through the years of being on the grounds at the sales and meeting different people in the industry, it’s a small network and you make friends, and Bevan and I have been working together now for at least the better part of the year and it’s working well. “It’s very much a team approach to try and get the best results we can for our owners back in Hong Kong. It’s not a one-man ship and we share the love.” View the full article
  14. TAB New Zealand has entered a non-binding agreement with Sports Entertainment Group Limited (SEG) to acquire in full the SENZ Digital & Audio business in New Zealand. The agreement will see TAB NZ take ownership of SENZ Digital & Audio, which includes the SENZ brand, website, and app, along with the 28 radio stations (across 29 frequencies), digital and audio content creation teams, and audio rights to several sports including cricket, netball, rugby league and Premier League football. The transaction is expected to complete in February next year. SEG acquired the radio frequencies that were previously used by Radio Trackside in April 2021, and has since invested considerably by refurbishing broadcasting studios (including state-of-the-art studios in Auckland), acquiring sporting rights outside of racing, building a digital content team and investing in a sizeable local radio content team. TAB NZ will be taking up a business with net assets of more than NZ$2 million along with the frequencies previously sold by TAB NZ in April 2021. “This agreement secures a strategic asset, which preserves racing and sports coverage in New Zealand,” TAB NZ Interim Chair Anna Stove said. The timing of the initial divestment by TAB NZ to SEG in early 2021 allowed TAB NZ to mitigate operating costs over the past two-and-a-half years. “During this time, the hard work from SEG and SENZ has meant TAB NZ is acquiring a much-improved asset on top of the frequencies originally sold to SEG,” Anna Stove said. “The business has significantly expanded since April 2021 from a set of radio frequencies to a modern, multi-platform media business, thanks to the access to the resources and intellectual property of SEG. Through our strategic partnership with Entain, we are now well placed to build on the progress made in the last two-and-a-half years and there is an opportunity to create a one-stop shop for news, views, and information for punters in New Zealand.” TAB NZ intends to progress discussions with Entain, the operator of the TAB in New Zealand, with a view to Entain taking on the management of the SENZ Digital & Audio business as part of the exciting strategic partnership agreement already in place for the wagering and media business of TAB and Trackside. The transaction is paired with a content supply partnership from SEG’s Australian business, SEN, which will make SEN programming available on SENZ frequencies. SEG will also remain the commercial arm for SENZ Digital & Audio, sourcing third-party advertising revenue for the business under new ownership. This includes commercial sales support for Trackside TV in addition to SENZ Digital & Audio. As part of the deal, SENZ Digital & Audio will continue with existing operations with no material changes for at least 12 months. SEG Chairman Craig Coleman said the transaction has strengthened its relationship with a number of key stakeholders and maintained an ongoing involvement with New Zealand sports and racing fans. “We are delighted to have helped shape a business with the New Zealand sports fan at its centre. The transitioning to the new ownership structure and supporting commercial agreement enables the SENZ Digital & Audio to become part of a broader, integrated and improved sports and wagering offering.” SEG also maintains a strong relationship with TAB NZ’s partner Entain New Zealand and recently agreed to extend its commercial partnership with Entain’s Australian brands for an additional three-year term. Entain Australia and New Zealand Chief Executive Dean Shannon congratulated TAB NZ on its decision to take on ownership of SENZ Digital & Audio. “It is a great outcome for all of those who are passionate about racing and sports in New Zealand, and I applaud the TAB NZ Interim Board Chair Anna Stove and the Board on this decisive move,” Dean Shannon said. “Radio remains a key pillar for engaging racing and sporting audiences, and we’re very confident this will present many opportunities to promote racing and sports to Kiwis on the SENZ platform, alongside the outstanding broadcasting service provided by Trackside.” View the full article
  15. Auckland Thoroughbred Racing (ATR) has announced that the Club and partner, tripleSdata, are going to provide accurate SMART race timing and tracking data at all Pukekohe Park and Ellerslie race meetings to assist stakeholders to better assess their horse’s performance, commencing with Saturday’s Counties Cup Day meeting. Whilst sectional timing has been available in New Zealand for some time, ATR’s utilisation of tripleSdata technology will drastically improve the accuracy and timeliness of the data provided to key racing stakeholders. The investment in the technology is significant and is driven by the Club’s desire to ensure the product and experience offered at ATR race meetings is best in class. The triplesdata reports will be available on the ATR website for all races on Counties Cup Day, this Saturday 25 November, and will be communicated to all owners and trainers once available for viewing. tripleSdata are global leaders in the timing and tracking space and are providers for the solution Australia wide and Asia currently. They are based in Sydney, Australia and are the exclusive and global distributor of various Swiss Timing racing products. ATR Executive General Manager – Racing and Operations, Craig Baker said it’s going to be incredibly valuable to owners, trainers, punters and other stakeholders to have access to such detailed and accurate information. “Sectional timing plays a critical role in assessing how a horse has performed so it’s great to be able to provide the most accurate data possible in a timely manner,” he said. “As we have seen via other sports, younger generations are hungry for data, so we see this as a strategic investment as we endeavour to drive wagering and consequently greater returns to the industry.” The tripleSdata reporting will provide the following timing data: Sectional time splits (rank) for each 200m Sectional time (rank) last 1200m, 1000m, 800m, 600m, 400m and 200m Stride length and frequency for each 200m Cumulative time splits (rank) from start to 800m, 800m – 400m, 400m to finish Field time splits (from start to 800m, 800m – 400m, 400m to finish) Top speed and location Average speed over the entire race Fastest 200m split Distance travelled relevant to the winner Distance from winner Official race time An additional benefit of the tripleSdata partnership will see Ellerslie and Pukekohe Park receive the high-tech SMART weather solution towards the end of the 2023/24 season. SMART Weather provides instant and accurate information to punters, owners, trainers, oncourse customers and ATR Members. Stakeholders can view via detailed graphics which include the following: Weather stations which include a 2D ultrasound wind sensor including wind direction, wind speeds, air temperature, air humidity and pressure A rain collector which accurately measures rainfall Turf sensors which accurately measure moisture and ground temperatures Track flyover which provides stakeholders a visual of all the data collected from multiple points across the racecourse and as they change throughout the day (Ellerslie only) “tripleSdata has been working for a number of years to develop, perfect and deliver world-leading SMART timing, tracking and weather technologies to racecourses for the benefit of punters and industry professionals,” founder and CEO of tripleSdata Carlos Santo said. “Timing, tracking and weather data plays a key role in assessing how horses performed, and how a track is prepared and ultimately races. “They’re useful components in assisting stakeholders to ensure their horses achieve their maximum racing potential.” The tripleSdata SMART solutions and reporting techniques have been tested at both Cox Plate Raceday and Melbourne Cup Day at Pukekohe Park and reporting will be available to the public for the first time following the Counties Cup Day races on Saturday, 25 November. 17. By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk It’s been 16 years since Pukekohe trainer Dave McGowan secured his last Group 1. Back then it was One Dream winning the 2007 Queen Of Hearts at Alexandra Park. Now McGowan, who trains with wife Clare, is becoming increasingly confident that Lucky Mum, a winner at Rangiora on Wednesday, could do the business in the Ace of Hearts for the two-year-old trotting fillies on Grand Prix day at Addington on December 10. “It’s been a while,” he says of the gap between Group 1 successes, “and there’s nothing in that Group 1 that worries me too much.” “She’d be hard to beat.” McGowan was encouraged by what he saw yesterday in the Team Bagrie 2YO Mobile Trot. While hot favourite Wilma’s Boy galloped at the start and was never a factor Lucky Mum went straight to the lead and settled perfectly for driver Matty Williamson. Turning for home second favourite Tyron Eros looked a big threat only to break, leaving Lucky Mum to cruise home by more than 13 lengths. “Matty said afterwards that she had a few gears left,” says McGowan. “She just keeps improving.” It was her first win in eight starts. Lucky Mum is owned and raced by Nancy Peni, the wife of the late Rex Peni, who trained 12 winners from 2011 until his death in 2022. He bought the Father Patrick filly at the NZB Standardbred Yearling Sale in Auckland in February last year for $32,500. “She didn’t know much about the horses early on but she’s loving it now,” says McGowan. After having a recent health scare McGowan wasn’t at Rangiora yesterday with nephew Brad Mowbray looking after the horse at his Leeston property. “Brad’s doing a great job.” While McGowan hopes to get the all clear to head south to Addington Lucky Mum’s regular driver Andre Poutama has been already been confirmed for the drive on a day that will see eight Group 1s, and over a million dollars in stakes. 19. In a new initiative to try and upskill the country’s drivers, Harness Racing New Zealand is on the lookout for three driving tutors. “These are brand new positions and will cover the whole country, there’ll be one up north, one in Canterbury and then a third in Southland,” says HRNZ’s Education Manager Natalie Gameson. The roles will be part-time and on a 12-month fixed term contract, involving between six and 15 hours a week depending on location and workload. “What we need is experienced and passionate people to not only guide the next generation of trials and junior drivers but also be available for all drivers requiring assistance.” “We have had feedback that there is a need for this sort of tutelage and we are confident it will be well received,” says Gameson. Experience as a former or current licensed harness racing driver is essential, as is an ability to be an effective communicator. “It’s a wide ranging role but crucially we want people who want to help others succeed both on and off the race track.” It’s envisaged the new tutors will start their roles in the New Year. 20. Ben Foote enjoyed an outstanding first session at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale and he’s got the firepower to continue the party at Pukekohe. The Cambridge-based horseman celebrated a 100 percent clearance rate at Karaka on Wednesday and on Saturday will look to top sprinter Babylon Berlin (All Too Hard) to continue her winning roll. He is out of the Smart Missile mare Launched, who is a half-sister to the multiple Group Two winner and Group One placegetter Tally (Street Cry). The weekend focus for Foote, who trains with son Ryan, will be on stable star Babylon Berlin’s tilt at the Gr.3 Haunui Farm Counties Bowl (1200m). Babylon Berlin will make her final race day appearance before attempting a deserved Group One victory in the Railway Stakes (1200m), a race she has twice placed in as well as the Gr.1 Telegraph (1200m) and the Gr.1 Waikato Sprint (1400m). “There isn’t anything for her so it will be a trial and exhibition gallops to get her ready,” Foote said. He is also looking forward to seeing Nancy She Wrote (NZ) (Wrote) back in action when she makes her return in the HR Fisken & Son Handicap (1600m). The lightly raced daughter of Wrote was spelled after winning once from five appearances last season and came off her maiden victory at Hastings to finish fifth in the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m) at Trentham. “She had a little spur on a fetlock that could have been there before she raced,” Foote said. “We had that tidied up and she’s come back a treat. I’ve been super happy with her trials as well.” View the full article
