Edited Press Release The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has released a Request for Proposal (RFP) soliciting proposals from applicants for a joint project that will involve the development and application of wearable biometric sensor technologies to improve early detection of musculoskeletal injuries in Thoroughbred racehorses in the United States. Wearable biometric sensors have shown promise in the identification of sub-clinically affected racehorses or those at risk of musculoskeletal injury. Any proposed system that monitors musculoskeletal parameters related to gait needs to have data transmission capabilities that interface with algorithms designed to detect injury; be scalable enough for widespread use; and be user-friendly and economical in order to be employed on all Thoroughbred racehorses for all races and recorded workouts. The AAEP will work with the successful applicant(s) on funding, licensing agreements, commercialization efforts, and other legal issues. Depending on the nature of the response to this proposal request, the AAEP may also solicit funding from industry leaders. The RFP is available here. Pre-proposals are due Feb. 15, 2024. Interested applicants should direct all questions and/or a response to this proposal request to AAEP Racing Committee Chair Dr. Sara Langsam at langsam@tfbequine.com. Issuance of this RFP is among nine recommendations coming out of the AAEP-sponsored Forum on Thoroughbred Safety and Injury Prevention, which in late September convened 23 invited private racetrack practitioners, regulatory veterinarians, surgeons, and radiologists to explore additional measures to reduced racehorse injuries. By Brigette Solomon Manawatu hosts the second of its two day meeting today and the locals will be looking for their share of the spoils. Palmerston North-based trainer-driver Stephen Doody has five horses engaged with the first two starting in Race 1, the Visit The Rugby Museum Handicap Trot over 2500m. “Mr Monty went a good race on Tuesday so he just has to do the same again and he should be a good chance,” says Doody, “and we have put removeable deafeners on Kingsclere in the hopes it might spark him up.” On Tuesday Mr Monty led early, before handing up and being shuffled three and four back on the fence, Doody then popped off the fence to join the moving line with a lap to go before running home strongly in the straight finishing a close up second. Bettor Grunter, who finished fourth in the Wairarapa Cup on Tuesday, starts in Race 5. “He got home nicely after getting back in the field on Tuesday but having drawn one today he should be able to stay handy and hopefully finish a few spots closer,” says Doody. Doody also starts Johnny Who in Race 2, and Toe The Line in Race 6, while also driving No Mercy in Race 8 for Cambridge trainers Andrew and Lyn Neal who placed second after leading throughout on Tuesday. Fred Mitchell brings back his team of three horses, all who gave creditable performances on Tuesday. Prince Envy and Manchester In Time both contest Race 2, Happy Birthday Brian Gemmell Handicap Trot over 2500m. Mitchell’s two trotters finished third and fourth respectively on Tuesday despite Manchester In Time briefly breaking near the 200m mark. “Both horses have pulled up brilliantly,” says Mitchell, “Prince Envy has been really happy and is working well, while the other fella is always pretty consistent.” Mitchell’s other horse Voodoo Prince finished fourth on Tuesday after challenging the leader in the middle stages and having to travel three wide to avoid traffic from around 600m. “He likes the pace on, and he’s drawn one today which should see him a bit handier and closer to the pace,” says Mitchell. Voodoo Prince starts in Race 6 at 7:19pm. The majority of Tuesday’s winners back up in tonight’s meeting, alongside several horses who have travelled south from the Rogerson/Ferguson Stables, Stonewall Stud, and Nicky Chilcott’s Cambridge based stable. Racing gets underway at 5:06pm. View the full article

By Jonny Turner The draws haven’t fallen Tony Stratford’s way, but the trainer’s team is showing all the right signs ahead of their missions at Ascot Park on Thursday. Stratford brings three in-form horses to Invercargill before heading to Timaru with two more strong chances on Saturday. Outback Man will be out to make it a perfect three from three in the Stratford colours in race 8. The pacer steps up to take on his toughest test to date, but there is little reason to doubt him going by his two wins so far. “He’s up and grade again, but he’s a lovely horse and he’ll put his best foot forward,” Stratford said. “He’ll try hard, so there’s no reason why he couldn’t win again.” “Given a decent trip, I don’t think he’d be a mile away.” Asta must start from barrier 8 when taking on a handy maiden field in race 7. The two-year-old showed he has a maiden win in his sights when running a tidy debut second at Ascot Park recently. “His first run was very good; he’s a lovely horse,” Stratford said. “He’s always been a nice horse from day dot, really.” “It’s not a big field though, so hopefully he can overcome that draw. Tuneinsportsfans will again seek an overdue maiden win in race 2. Drawing barrier 6 among 7 runners isn’t ideal for the pacer, but his last run suggested he is on the rise. “I was really happy with his run the other day; he got held up a bit but hit the line really strong, which often enough he hasn’t done,” Stratford said. “He can battle a bit the last little bit, which is probably why he hasn’t won a race yet.” “Definitely the way he went the other day, there are really positive signs.” “He looks a million dollars, and you’d like to think if he’s anywhere near his best, he wouldn’t be a mile away.” Blair Orange will drive all three Stratford runners at Ascot Park on Thursday. Stratford will also start two genuine threats at Timaru on Saturday in Dawson and Dreamalittledream. View the full article

Billed as the star attraction of the Goffs November Foal Sale, the brother to Ghaiyyath (Ire) did not disappoint when selling to powerhouse owner Zhang Yuesheng under the banner of Lucky Vega for €700,000. Bred and consigned by legendary trainer Dermot Weld's farm Springbank Way Stud, the Dubawi (Ire) colt boasts one of the most coveted pedigrees in the book being a brother to champion older horse and exciting first-season sire Ghaiyyath. He is out of the trainer's own blue hen Nightime (Ire), reported to be happily in foal to Wootton Bassett (GB) at the age of 20. Much of the bidding was carried out online, with two buyers going head to head from the outset. Asked if the sales price was in or around what he expected to achieve, Weld commented afterwards, “I thought it was about what he would make. He is a smashing foal and it's been a wonderful family for us. I'm delighted for the farm. The mare is in foal to Wootton Bassett (GB). She's very healthy and very well.” He added, “It's a wonderful family and a lot of work went into it. I'm very proud of the farm and for my son Mark and all the team, including the stud groom Mark Murphy. I think this is a very good colt, a lovely foal. He's a lovely individual and a great walker.” Of course, it was at this sale in 2015 when Ghaiyyath was knocked down to John Ferguson on behalf of Godolphin for €1,100,000. He would go on to prove himself a world-class older horse for Charlie Appleby, winning four Group 1s including the Eclipse and the Juddmonte, and his yearlings and foals have proved to be very popular among buyers this year. Weld went on to reveal that he has a couple of Ghaiyyaths to look forward to next year. Weld said, “I have a couple of very nice Ghaiyyaths. Not only do we have the dam, but we also have the granddam, Caumshinaun (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), who naturally is retired. She's a matron and we're very proud to have her.” Of the 202 foals offered on Wednesday, 172 were sold at a clearance rate of 85%. The aggregate stood at €12,360,500, which represented a 19% drop on last year's figures. The average also fell by 19% to €71,864 while the median dipped 10% to €52,000. 'Out Of This World' – Breeders Langan And Hickey Reach For The Stars Jer Hickey and Aaron Langan | Goffs Breeders Aaron Langan and Jer Hickey, who sold lot 655, a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt to Peter and Ross Doyle, were left flabbergasted by the €310,000 payout. The pair purchased the dam Celeste De La Mer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), a half-sister to Mojo Star (Ire) (Sea The Stars), Portage (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Cape Magic (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), for just €19,000 at Goffs in 2017 and the pedigree has just gotten better and better ever since. Not least with the emergence of Mojo Star, who the Doyles also purchased as a yearling on behalf of Amo Racing and trainer Richard Hannon, but she has also produced a black-type performer in her own right in the shape of the Joseph O'Brien-trained Maritime Wings (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}). Langan said after the sale, “We're on cloud nine and we have been since we started showing him. To make that sort of money, it's out of this world. Can't believe it. “The one thing about the progeny of Sea The Stars, their temperament is very good and he's got that from his father. That probably helped a lot.” He added, “We'll be going around Ireland and England following him in a couple of years if he's good. Part of breeding these foals is the huge kick you get when you see them running. It's like Christmas Day when you see them making it to the track because so much can go wrong in the meantime. To have a horse like this to go forward for the mare is just brilliant.” The colt was sold under the banner of Carrick Hill Stud, owned by Mark Lawless, and Hickey was keen to acknowledge the abundance of help the breeders have benefited from before netting their major payday with the Sea The Stars colt. Hickey said, “We bought the mare here at Goffs and have just been very lucky. A lot of people have given us a lot of help along the way, too. A neighbour of ours, Christy Swords, gave us the use of a stable in the field. Christy passed away this year. Another friend of ours, Mark Lawless, who actually owns Carrick Hill, has been a huge help to us over the years. We're blessed with all the help we've got.” The Sea The Stars colt came in for high praise by Ross Doyle, who bought him on behalf of an existing client who not only races, but reoffers horses at the yearling markets. Doyle said, “An outstanding individual by one of the best sires we have seen for a long time. The dam has also done the job as well. She has produced two black-type horses–one on the Flat and one over hurdles, which is obviously a good sign of toughness in the family. The pedigree goes back to Mojo Star, who we bought as a yearling. I thought he was a standout, very unique and a good mover. “He'd a wonderful temperament every time I went down to see him. I haven't seen a foal fill the box like he did for a long time. He has a great presence and took my eye every time I went to see him. He showed great every time.” Emotional Success For Smullen Family With 250k Blue Point Colt One of the stories of the entire sale came when Frances Crowley, wife of the much missed nine-time Irish champion jockey Pat Smullen, recorded a memorable result when the family's Brickfield Stud homebred colt by Blue Point was knocked down to Godolphin for €250,000. Crowley had sourced the dam, La Rosetta (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), from Godolphin for just 40,000gns through bloodstock agent Ted Durcan at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2021. Less than two years later, things turned full circle when the powerhouse owners snapped up the Ringford Stud-consigned colt by their very own stallion for one of the highest prices recorded at Goffs on the day. Wham Bam, Thank You Tham! Hanshen Tham | Goffs Hanshen Tham continues his love affair with Night Of Thunder at Goffs on Wednesday by snapping up a colt by the sire for €200,000. The popular breeder and pinhooker, who netted himself a cool 500,000gns with a homebred Night Of Thunder filly at Book 1 this year, revealed the colt will be offered for resale. Tham said, “He's a proper Book 1 type and will go back to Baroda Stud [who consigned his Night Of Thunder filly back in October].” 'We're Having Amnesia About How Hard It Was To Sell Yearlings This Year!' The Gleeson brothers: broke new ground on Wednesday | Goffs Brothers Michael and Laurence Gleeson of Aughamore Stud have rightly earned a reputation as being one of the shrewdest pinhookers in the business and the pair broke new ground on Wednesday by shelling out €200,000 for a Lope De Vega (Ire) filly who was consigned by Alice Kavanagah. That made lot 563 the most expensive pinhooking project the Gleeson brothers have ever undertaken and brought the total Aughamore Stud spend at Goffs this week to €287,000 on three foals. Laurence Gleeson said, “It's the most money we've ever spent on a foal but the way we viewed it was, the market was a small bit dicey this year and, with what may come next year, well-bred fillies by proven stallions should hold their value. Yes, we were paying a bit more to be playing at the top end of the market, but that's our thinking behind it. Look, she is just a beautiful filly. We looked at her three or four times and it was the same show every time. She's a hell of a first foal.” Remarkably, this is the first year that the Gleeson brothers didn't encounter altogether smooth waters, with some of their pinhooks failing to make a profit. Nevertheless, Gleeson explained that, in this game, you need to be able to take the rough with the smooth. Either that, or you have to suffer from amnesia! He explained, “It's been going so well for six or seven years now and we barely lost on any pinhook up until this year. We had a little bit of a hiccup this year. It's just fine margins. That's the difference between making eighty grand or one-hundred-and-eighty grand. “We were keen to buy the horses we liked this week. Whether that's at two hundred or less, I mean, we bought a lovely Kodi Bear (Ire) colt earlier in the day for small money [€22,000] and he'll be an ideal Donny type.” Gleeson added, “It's funny, us pinhookers, we're a strange bunch as we're having amnesia about how hard it was to sell yearlings this year! And now everyone is going hard again. It's extremely strong in there, especially for the nice ones.” The Lope De Vega filly in question is the first foal out of Quiet Times (Ger) (Reliable Man {GB}), a listed winner in France. The sale formed part of a strong session for the Ballylinch Stud-based sire with seven foals by Lope De Vega selling for €1,043,000. They included a Stanley Lodge-drafted colt who was knocked down to Camas Park Stud for €260,000 and a filly who fetched the same to Dan Hayden from Donnellys Well. 'Eddie O'Leary Said He Was The Best Colt He Saw All Week' Popular bloodstock agent Peter Kelly might only have four mares but 7,000gns purchase Wild Mix (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) has already proved herself a valuable commodity being the dam of Caught U Looking (Ire) (Harzand {Ire}). The Kelly family still own half of the Group 3-winning juvenile, who is in training with Noel Meade, and it was the Classic contender's half-brother by Supremacy who caught the imagination on Wednesday when snapped up by Yeomanstown Stud for €180,000. Kelly commented, “He is a belter. A lovely horse who couldn't be faulted–he'd 14 vets. Eddie O'Leary said he was the nicest colt he'd seen all week. Of course, there is a cap on what a horse by a first-season sire can make. I went to Supremacy because Gay [O'Callaghan of Yeomanstown] does a lot of business with me. “Anyway, Yeomanstown don't come up with a bad horse too often and they back them all themselves. It's the same with Tony [O'Callaghan of Tally-Ho Stud], they don't buy what they wouldn't use themselves.” Caught U Looking emerged as one of Meade's stable stars on the Flat this season when building on a brilliant Leopardstown maiden win to land the G3 Weld Park S. at the Curragh. While she proved no match for Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the G1 Fillies' Mile at Newmarket on her final start of the season, she remains an interesting candidate with a view towards the domestic fillies' Classics, and Kelly is enjoying the ride. He said, “Caught U Looking provided the mare with a good update and the family still own half of her with Tony. The Inns Of Court is with Johnny Murtagh and the mare is in foal to Cotai Glory (GB). She's a lovely mare. We've only four mares and my family own this mare. There have been offers for the mare but we've turned them down.” On the foal market at Goffs, he added, “If you're making the list you're doing well but there's a lot of expensive stud fees in there now as well. Remember, there's a lot of horses making six figures, but what are the stud fees? A lot of them don't make it.” The post Powerhouse Owner Zhang Yuesheng Lands 700k Brother To Ghaiyyath At Goffs appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Trainer Jimmy Jerkens didn't get off to a good start after he resettled in Saudi Arabia. But the longtime fixture on the New York racing circuit seems to have figured things out. He went into the weekend with 12 wins from 60 starters. Jerkens was the Green Group Guest of the Week on this weeks TDN Writers' Room Podcast presented by Keeneland and discussed a number of topics, including why he believes his career had taken a wrong turn before he left for Saudi Arabia, his future plans and what it's like to train in a country where everything was new and different. So far as why his stable has heated up, Jerkens believes his horses have been rounding into form, which, he said, takes time when the tracks are as deep and tiring as they are in Saudi Arabia. “The track is so deep and slow here,” he said. “I think my horses needed a run over it. Most of the horses, when they ran back, got better with each succeeding start. They hadn't trained over it or raced over it like some of the horses here have. When racing shifted here, to Riyadh, we had some fresh horses and they popped right away.” Another adjustment he had to make was running horses back with less rest than they normally get between starts in the U.S. He said the racing managers for his owner, Prince Faisal bin Khalid Al Saud, and he don't always agree on racing schedules. “I've been here for a little more than five months and I think I only have one horse that's run that's run four times,” Jerkens said. “I've been trying to stretch things out so they stay a little fresher and they get they get stronger instead of getting knocked out. But I get some resistance. The Prince's men want to run a little more sometimes than I do. Sometimes I talk them out of it and then other times I don't. It all depends on the situation.” After working for his father, Hall of Famer Allen Jerkens, Jerkens went out on his own in 1997. By 2000, he had established himself as a steady winner on the New York circuit who had the type of stock that could compete in stakes. He won 59 races in 2000, good for a 28 percent winning rate, and won six stakes. His numbers stayed relatively stable and in 2018 he won 38 races with stable earnings of $2,922,392. But his fortunes declined every year thereafter and in 2022, his last full year in the U.S., he won just four races and had earnings of $365,995, which, he admitted, was causing financial problems. Looking back, he says he made a mistake when deciding not to expand his stable. “When the stable was going really good, I had a chance to expand pretty good,” he said. “The owners were coming to me and I was getting offers to train more horses. I didn't really take it and go with it. I didn't want to get to be so big that I couldn't do the job the way I like to do it. In the long run, that hurt me. I probably should have done whatever it took to get the extra horses and keep it going. It's a numbers game now, especially the way horses are so disposable. I understand why those guys have so many horses, even if they spread themselves thin. Looking back, I realize you have get to get the horses in the barn. That's the bottom line. Get the horses in the barn.” Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association, West Point Thoroughbreds, Lane's End, WinStar Farm and XBTV.com, the team of Zoe Cadman, Bill Finley and Randy Moss reviewed last weekend's races, which included impressive wins by Nysos (Nyquist) in the Bob Hope S. and Integration (Quality Road) in the GII Hill Prince S. They also took a look at the latest news on GI Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice), who was pulled from the Keeneland November Sale and whose future remains up in the air, and they remembered the life and times of Hall of Fame jockey Bobby Ussery, who passed away last week at 88. Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) are among 16 elite-level winners and 25 overseas-based horses that have been extended invitations to the Longines Hong Kong International Races meeting at Sha Tin Racecourse Sunday, Dec. 9. Winner of this year's G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and a narrowly beaten second to his GI Breeders' Cup Turf-winning stable companion Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in defence of his crown in the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown Sept. 9, the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup-bound Luxembourg is one of four for trainer Aidan O'Brien on the day. Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) could try to give the team a fourth victory in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase, while Cairo (Ire) (Quality Road) is engaged for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile and recent GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint third Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never) in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint. Highfield Princess swerved the Breeders' Cup meeting in favour of this fixture, though it is a race in which European raiders–and foreign-based runners, in general–have struggled mightily. Danon Smash (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) is the last overseas horse to take the Sprint, and Japan fields a pair as well, including Mad Cool (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a €225,000 purchase by Katsumi Yoshida out of the 2019 Goffs November sale and who just failed when last seen in the Oct. 1 G1 Sprinters S. Two-time Mile winner Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) goes first-up this year and will face as many as five Japanese invaders led by 4-year-old filly Namur (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}), who just got the better of Soul Rush (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) and former Hong Kong star Joao Moreira in the G1 Mile Championship last weekend. Godolphin's treble 2023 group scorer Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}) is also engaged for the Mile for trainer Andre Fabre, and Singapore is also represented by its standout galloper Lim's Kosciuszko (Aus) (Kermadec {NZ}). Winner of 15 of 19 at home, he finished at the tail, but beaten under seven lengths, behind Wellington (Aus) (All Too Hard {Aus}) in last year's Sprint. Simon and Ed Crisford trainee West Wind Blows (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) will try to give his sire another winner of the Vase, joining Hong Kong's Exultant (Ire) back in 2018. The 4-year-old had a busy Spring Carnival in Victoria, running second in the G1 Turnbull S. and G1 Caulfield Cup before finishing ninth in the G1 Champions S. America is set to be represented by its first HKIR runner for six years when Soldier Rising (GB) (Frankel {GB}) competes in the Vase. The 5-year-old has placed in five Grade Is in the States and has winning form in France going right-handed. Japan has won the Vase three out of the last four years and will have a strong chance yet again with recent GI Breeders' Cup Turf third Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Geraldina (Jpn), a daughter of Cup and Mile winner Maurice (Jpn) and fellow Horse of the Year Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). In addition to the aforementioned Golden Sixty, also defending the home turf will be Romantic Warrior (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), who will try to go back-to-back in the Cup having posted a memorable win in the G1 Cox Plate in late October; champion sprinter Lucky Sweynesse (NZ) (Sweynesse {Aus}), an unlucky sixth in last year's Sprint; 2022 Mile champion California Spangle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}); and Russian Emperor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who gave trainer Douglas Whyte a first win on foreign soil in the Listed HH The Amir's Trophy in Qatar this past February. “We are excited by the quality of selected runners for this year's Longines Hong Kong International Races and the presence of so many global stars is in keeping with our long-held commitment to deliver sporting excellence,” said Andrew Harding, the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Executive Director of Racing. “This is particularly highlighted with Japan, Europe and Ireland's contingent as they prepare to compete against Hong Kong champions Golden Sixty, Romantic Warrior and Lucky Sweynesse.” Stacked field! The King's Plate will be held in August for the third straight year in 2024 when it will be run Aug. 17 at Woodbine Racetrack. “This year's King's Plate was a big success, delivering a record handle, sold-out crowd and really exciting racing,” said Michael Copeland, CEO of Woodbine. “The third weekend in August has been a good spot for attracting a quality field on the track and an energetic crowd off the track. Building on our momentum created at this year's Plate, we are excited to make the event even bigger in 2024 and look forward to welcoming everyone to Woodbine for the 165th King's Plate on Aug. 17.” The Queen's Plate had traditionally been run in June or July before it was postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic. It has since been run in August in 2021 and 2022. Last year, it was run as the King's Plate for the first time in 70 years after the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of her son, King Charles III. Every week, the TDN posts a roundup of the relevant Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) related rulings from around the country. Among the key rulings from the last seven days, trainer Jaime Cruz has been suspended for 15-days–beginning on Nov. 21–after his runner, Animal Princess, tested positive post-race for Detomidine, which is used primarily as a sedative in horses. Detomidine is also labelled as an analgesic. Trainer Tanner Tracy has also been suspended for seven days–beginning Nov. 15–after a post-race sample from his trainee, Carry On, tested positive for Cannabidiol (CBD). As human CBD-containing products have become much more ubiquitous in recent years, they've proven something of a headache for regulators and trainers alike. By Adam Hamilton Gone are the days when the Kiwis came to Victoria in force to snatch Breeders Crown glory. A change in qualifying conditions and a move to later in the year has taken much of the attraction away from the once great series for New Zealand owners and trainers. But Cran Dalgety, who was once one of those marauding Kiwi trainers, will fly the New Zealand flag at Melton on Saturday night. Dalgety has won five Breeders Crown finals as a trainer, the latest with Katy Perry as a two-year-old filly in 2014. This time he will be trackside cheering as a part-owner of his Group 1-winning filly Joyful in the $150,000 three-year-old pacing fillies’ final. It’s due to go at 11.45pm NZT on Saturday night. Dalgety leases Joyful from Alabar Farms with friend and leading Western Australian harness racing administrator Cam Brown. “You know I’ve never actually seen this filly in the flesh,” Dalgety said. “I think it’s time I did. “She’s done such a wonderful job for us and never seems to have much luck with barrier draw … this time she has.” Joyful is drawn beautifully in gate four and has been backed from $3 into $2.20 to upstage stablemate and superstar filly Major Delight, who has gate six. They will both move in one spot if emergency On The Hunt doesn’t get a run from gate three. Dalgety said a chat with Alabar Farm’s Brett Coffey led to leasing Joyful. “She would’ve gone through the sales, but had a bout of colic and a wee operation,” he said. “How I came on the radar is that she’s out of a mare called Joyfuljoy, who is a half-sister to a lovely filly I had called Better Joy.” Better Joy won a Breeders Crown semi-final and ran fourth in her final. “This filly didn’t show anything special early and we were about to give her back to Alabar to breed from,” Dalgety said. “Brett (Coffey) said they’d probably give her Emma (Stewart) and Clayton (Tonkin) to have a go with and Cam and I thought we might as well stay in and try that. “She won her first six starts for them, including the Group 1 Vicbred final.” The other Kiwi interest in the Breeders Crown will be exciting young Queensland trotter Not As Promised in the $75,000 Group 3YO Trotting colts and geldings final. He dominates betting from gate four and trainer Graham Dwyer has sights set on the Group 1 NZ Trotting Derby (December 10) if Not As Promised comes through this week as well as he expects. The other key Crown finals from a quality point of view are the two-year-old pacing fillies’ and two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. Stewart and Tonkin won six of 10 races on Crown finals night last year and have the talent to go close to that again on Saturday night. The clash between their unbeaten two-year-old fillies Very Pretty (four wins, gate two) and Draw A Dream (six wins, gate three) will be epic. And they have six of the 12 finalists in the $250,000 2YO colts and geldings where Timmy Rictor (gate five), Stormryder (two) and Kingman (six) are their big guns. Former Kiwi horseman Jack Trainor could be their biggest danger. He drives the emerging Nathan Street, who has the pole for trainer Freddy Taiba. View the full article

'The Centenary of Naas Racecourse', which celebrates the 100th anniversary of Naas Racecourse, was officially launched at Swans on the Green in Naas, Co. Kildare on Tuesday evening. Larry Swan of Swans on the Green welcomed attendees, before handing off the microphone to MC Aileen O'Brien, who interviewed Naas mayor Bill Clear, the author Turtle Bunbury, and Naas Racecourse director Richard Brophy. During Brophy's interview, he mentioned Dermot Cantillon, the chairman of Naas Racecourse, who had been instrumental in getting the project completed. Mayor Clear said, “Naas Racecourse is an integral part of the town of Naas, it's unusual to have a track that is so centrally located and it's very much part of our community.” The book traces the evolution of the track from a humble field on the outskirts of a bustling Irish market town to its present-day status as one of Europe's best-loved boutique racecourses. It goes through the history of Naas Racecourse over the last century with significant information and photographs of each decade included throughout. Added Bunbury when asked about his research, “We found thousands and thousands of press clippings. It was incredible to find so many interesting articles and features that went back so many years ago.” Many famous visitors have been to the racecourse, including Robert De Niro, Count John McCormack, Brendan Behan, Prince Aly Khan (husband of the actress Rita Hayworth), Adele Astaire (sister of Fred Astaire), Bono, President Hillary and former Taoiseach, Liam Cosgrave. The book is available to buy at the Naas Racecourse website and is priced at €50 plus post and packaging.
