Godolphin's Group 1 scorer Tornado Alert (Too Darn Hot) will be freshened for the rest of the summer with the G2 Bahrain International Trophy in November penciled in as a long-term target, according to trainer Saeed bin Suroor. A winner at two, the son of Bint Almatar (Kingmambo) ran fourth in the G1 2000 Guineas in May and was sixth to Lambourn (Australia) in the G1 Derby at Epsom in June. Wheeled back in the G3 Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot, the bay was second that day. He was most recently seen in action in the G1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen, where he ran out a 2 1/2-length winner on July 27. “He's fine, in good form, but I've given him a break,” said bin Suroor. “It's likely that I'll keep him back for the race in Bahrain. I just want to give him an easy time and miss York as he had been very busy, he ran in the Guineas, then the Derby, then Royal Ascot. “I'll get him started on some light exercise, then in September we can start working him before going to Bahrain, he'll be ready for it. He needed a break.” Other Middle Eastern targets are also under consideration for Tornado Alert, including Dubai and Saudi Arabia. He added, “After Bahrain I'll take him to Dubai and if he's good enough, I'll take him to Saudi Arabia. We'll see how good he is on the dirt first and if not he can run in the turf race, I'll have to see.” The post Bahrain Trophy On The Docket For Tornado Alert appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Providing a welcome winner for The Aga Khan Studs on the Deauville card they sponsored in its entirety, Rayif (Sea The Moon) lit up the G3 Prix Francois Boutin with a display that shouted Classic potential. A narrow winner over six furlongs here last month, the half-brother to the Commonwealth Cup third Rayevka brushed aside Ballydoyle's 7-10 favourite Daytona (Wootton Bassett) with a furlong remaining and surged to the line for a 2 1/2-length success. The Coventry fourth Andab (Saxon Warrior) denied Daytona second by a head. “I thought he did it very convincingly and his half-sister is very good and very fast, so we seem to be bringing out the speed of that family,” Princess Zahra Aga Khan said of the exciting Francis-Henri Graffard trainee. “He was still very green today and we can hope that he might run in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.” Impressive! Providing instant justification and reward for the investment by Sam Sangster Bloodstock, Ballydoyle's Diego Velazquez (Frankel) edged a thriller from Notable Speech (Dubawi) in Sunday's G1 The Aga Khan Studs Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville. Always happy playing a prominent role away from the fence under Christophe Soumillon, the 12-1 shot stayed on to wrest the lead from Dancing Gemini (Camelot) with 100 metres remaining and found the line a head in front of the fast-closing Godolphin runner, who was 3/4 of a length behind in third. “He's always been a very good horse and I'm so delighted for Sam–he's a very legitimate and desirable horse,” Aidan O'Brien said of the first winner of the race in the famed Sangster silks and his stable's second after Excelebration in 2012. “He's a great model and is determined and very brave–he had won a good trial in the Minstrel and they have to be sharp for that as it's a fast seven and he had just come right in the last week. It's incredible to have a horse running in those colours, I was just thinking of that when I saw him going down, we never thought we'd have a horse running in them. We thought he'd be a horse for the Keeneland Mile and then the Breeders' Cup Mile.” Sam Sangster has the GI Breeders' Cup Mile in mind for the winner. “That meant a lot–we were so lucky that Aidan and Coolmore let us into the horse and we are even luckier now that's for sure,” he said. “He's an absolute gorgeous horse, a phenomenal mover and so tough. We could see him at the National Stud just by the way he walked out of his box. I thought he'd run a big race and he had been working very well and he's shown how good he really is. We were thinking of going to Keeneland, as that's a 'Win and You're In' for the Breeders' Cup, but we'll let Aidan decide.” Charlie Appleby also has the Breeders' Cup in mind for the runner-up, who was flashing home and could be considered unlucky having had to wait for his run. “The important thing is that he is back to his best,” he said. “William had to wait and when you do that you are either hero or villain, but that is how he has to be ridden. He could go for the Woodbine Mile and then the Breeders' Cup Mile.” Diego Velazquez just holds on from the fast-finishing Notable Speech to land the Group One @AgaKhanStuds Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville! pic.twitter.com/xrHpn7ahoE — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) August 17, 2025 Sunday, Deauville, France THE AGA KHAN STUDS PRIX JACQUES LE MAROIS-G1, €1,000,000, Deauville, 8-17, 3yo/up, c/f, 8fT, 1:34.23, g/s. 1–DIEGO VELAZQUEZ (IRE), 131, c, 4, by Frankel (GB) 1st Dam: Sweepstake (Ire) (SW & GSP-Eng & US, $114,162), by Acclamation (GB) 2nd Dam: Dust Flicker (GB), by Suave Dancer 3rd Dam: Galaxie Dust, by Blushing Groom (Fr) TDN Rising Star. 1ST GROUP 1 WIN. Te Akau trainer Mark Walker made history at Ballarat on Sunday with an unprecedented trifecta in the A$400,000 Ecycle Solutions Grand National Steeplechase (4500m). Walker saddled Leaderboard (Street Cry) for a 25-length win in the showpiece steeplechase, with The Mighty Spar (NZ) (Savabeel) second and Prismatic (NZ) (Savabeel) third. It capped an enormously special Sunday for Walker and the Te Akau Racing team, who also took three runners to Taupo and came away with three winners – Carsolio, To Bravery Born and In Haste. Former Gr.3 Wellington Cup (3200m) and Listed New Zealand St Leger (2600m) winner Leaderboard settled in second spot on Sunday for jockey Will Gordon before taking command when topweight Stern Idol began to tire. Leaderboard and the favourite Noonday Gun seemed set to fight out a tight battle to the finish, but Noonday Gun fell at the final fence and left Leaderboard to cruise to a runaway win. “I can’t really believe it,” Gordon said. “I went out there without any pressure, just riding my race, riding the horse. Going down the back the last time, I thought, ‘I’ve still got a bit of horse here and might be in the finish.’ “He’s a legend of a horse. Everyone that rides him, or has anything to do with him, just loves and adores him. “There will be a line out the door that want this horse at the end of his racing career. He’s such a gentleman, such a dude to do anything with, a great jumper, and what you saw today was no better of example of that. “There are no chinks in his armour. He jumps, travels, and I was happy where we were in the run to be tracking Stern Idol. We got easy enough sectionals behind him and I thought he would be vulnerable late. “We were able to sit on his tail, conserve energy, and like I said, his jumping was great. He did the rest. “For me, the win is right up there. This is one that has been missing off my mantelpiece and to tick this one off, they’re hard races to win and only come up once a year.” Leaderboard has now had 68 starts for 12 wins, 19 placings and A$861,388 in stakes. Five of his wins have come over jumps, including four steeplechases. “It was a great ride by Will and it’s great to see all three horses come back safe,” Walker said. “The girls that strap them, Hayley (Morton) with the winner, Emma (Wilson) with The Mighty Spar, and Lisa (Strike) with Prismatic – they just love these horses. They’re got a dual purpose as well, these older horses, because they help out in the stables by educating the yearlings.” Leaderboard is raced by John Galvin’s Fortuna Leaderboard Syndicate. “The win would have to go down as one of the highlights we’ve had with Fortuna Racing,” Galvin said on Sunday. “The big thing I felt about today was redemption for Leaderboard, because he had that unfortunate fall in the Brierley Steeplechase (3450m), back in April, but he’d run three very good races since then for seconds. “He’d been beaten by Stern Idol in two of those, and today he was able to come out and beat not only Stern Idol, but also the up-and-comer Noonday Gun. “It was a huge thrill. The whole race, he was right there. You got the feeling he was always going to be in contention, provided, A, he could run past Stern Idol, and, B, he was able to fend off the grey horse (Noonday Gun). “We had two of his owners with us, Shane and Colleen Ivory, and they were here last year, as well, when he ran second. So, it was great for them to be here today and see him win. “It’s an unbelievable training feat by Mark (Walker) to get the trifecta, the first time it’s ever been done in the race. “While having plenty of international experience, Mark is a relatively new trainer to the Australian racing circuit, and he’s managed to have his three runners fill the first three placings in the most prestigious jumps race in Australia. “It’s a great effort and for him, specifically, with Leaderboard. He just loves the horse to bits and has nurtured him over the last few years to create an outstanding jumps career.” View the full article

What Pakenham Races Where Southside Racing Pakenham – 420 Nar Nar Goon – Longwarry Rd, Tynong VIC 3810 When Monday, August 18, 2025 First Race 1pm AEST Visit Dabble Pakenham’s all‑weather track hosts an eight‑race card on Monday, August 18, 2025. The first event jumps at 1:00pm AEST, while the last is set for 4:30pm AEST. Showers are forecast, but the all‑weather should ensure fair footing throughout. Best Bet at Pakenham: Super Solar Super Solar is absolutely airborne and looks superbly placed to go on with it. He was a dominant winner over this track/trip last start back and can continue his impressive form this campaign. Back on the Pakenham poly, an inside alley should let Nadia Daniels land behind the speed and peel into the race on the bend. He owns the best recent figures in the race, thrives on the synthetic, and meets several rivals he’s already had the wood on this prep. If he turns up within a length of his July 28 peak, he’s the one they have to beat. Best Bet Race 6 – #1 Super Solar (3) 6yo Gelding | T: Reece Goodwin | J: Nadia Daniels (a3) (63kg) Next Best at Pakenham: Il Cubo Il Cubo strikes a winnable BM70 after a strong second on the Ballarat Synthetic on August 7, and his previous July 1 synthetic win reads perfectly for this. He draws to stalk the pace from barrier six, and Jake Noonan knows exactly when to press the button with this Rubick gelding. He’s two-for-two in the quinella on the poly and has the tactical speed to avoid traffic in a smallish field. The Goodwin yard is flying on synthetics, and a return to his favourite surface is a significant positive. In an extraordinary move by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), no race meetings will take place in Britain on Wednesday, September 10. The refusal to race is a protest at the British government's proposed tax rise on horserace betting, which, if approved, would bring it in line with betting on online gaming, pushing it up from 15 per cent to 21 per cent. This will be the first time that the sport has voluntarily refused to race in its modern history. The four meetings scheduled for that day will move to different dates in the calendar The announcement comes as British Racing's 'Axe the Racing Tax' campaign gears up in advance of the Autumn Budget. The BHA has warned that proposal to harmonise betting duty could have “devastating consequences for the nation's second-largest spectator sport that supports 85,000 jobs and which is attended by almost 5 million people each year”. On September 10, senior racing leaders will be joined in Westminster by owners, trainers and jockeys to an industry worth £4.1 billion to the UK economy. “We have decided to take the unprecedented decision to cancel our planned racing fixtures on 10 September to highlight to government the serious consequences of the Treasury's tax proposals which threaten the very future of our sport,” said BHA chief executive Brant Dunshea. “British Racing is already in a precarious financial position and research has shown that a tax rise on racing could be catastrophic for the sport and the thousands of jobs that rely on it in towns and communities across the country. “This is the first time that British Racing has chosen not to race due to government proposals. We haven't taken this decision lightly but in doing so we are urging the government to rethink this tax proposal to protect the future of our sport which is a cherished part of Britain's heritage and culture. “Our message to Government is clear: axe the racing tax and back British Racing.” Paul Johnson, chief executive of the National Trainers Federation, added, “Cancelling fixtures is a huge sacrifice by racing and should serve as a stark reminder to the Government of the impact its tax raid will have on our sport.” The post British Racing Called Off For One Day as Axe The Racing Tax Campaign Gathers Pace appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. A smart first-up performance by In Haste (Snitzel) at Taupo on Sunday has set up an exciting spring for the more than 10,000 members of the TAB Racing Club. The TAB Racing Club, which shares ownership of In Haste with the filly’s breeders SF Bloodstock and Newgate, was launched last September to drive awareness and support for getting involved in racing ownership. Modelled on a similar club operated by Entain through its Ladbrokes brand in Australia, the TAB Racing Club offers TAB customers the chance to opt in to becoming a member of the club and experience the joys of ownership without spending a cent. In Haste gave the club an early highlight with a four-length win at Matamata in January, and Sunday’s three-year-old debut suggested there could be even better things in store this season. The Snitzel filly took out the Taupo Pak ‘N’ Save 3YO Fillies (1100m) – a race that has previously been won by emerging three-year-old stars such as Alabama Lass (2024), Quintessa (2023), Best Seller (2022), Miss Aotearoa (2020) and Jennifer Eccles (relegated to second on protest in 2019). Sunday’s 2025 edition drew a field worthy of the race’s growing reputation. In Haste was opposed by eight fillies including the stakes winner and Group One-placed To Cap It All, the Group Two winner Intention, unbeaten Listed winner Little Black Dress and stakes placegetters Lady Iris and Abbakiss, along with stylish debut winner Lodi Dodi. But it was In Haste who took the lion’s share of the $40,000 prize. In Haste drew the outside gate but landed in a perfect position for jockey Opie Bosson, sitting in second on the outside of Lady Iris. Bosson got In Haste balanced up at the top of the home straight and let her rip, and she burst to a clear lead with less than 200m to run. Lady Iris and Little Black Dress stuck on solidly on her inside, with To Cap It All and Lollapalooza getting home strongly out wide, but there would be no catching In Haste. She went on to win by a short neck from Lollapalooza, whose big finish ate into the margin significantly in the final few strides. To Cap It All finished three and a quarter lengths behind the first pair in third. In Haste became the fourth winner on the eight-race card for Bosson, who had previously won aboard Te Atatu Dream, Carsolio and To Bravery Born. “It was a really good resuming win by In Haste, after she’d trialled up nicely at Taupo, and another good ride by Opie,” co-trainer Mark Walker said. “He got out to the better ground, got a break on the field and put that winning margin on them. “She’ll improve out of today’s run and we look forward to taking on Group company next time out in the Gold Trail Stakes (Gr.3, 1200m). “This is really good for Newgate Farm and the TAB Racing Club, so we can all be very happy.” The Gold Trail Stakes will be run at Ellerslie on September 6. In Haste was offered by Newgate Farm at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where Ladbrokes Racing Club and Newgate Bloodstock bought her for A$400,000. She has now had three starts for two wins, a second and $42,925 in stakes. “It was a really good win by In Haste and nice to get another one in the TAB Racing Club colours,” Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis said. “She tries hard, obviously has above average ability, and it would be great to get some valuable black type with her next start. “To line up three horses at Taupo today and get three wins (Carsolio, To Bravery Born and In Haste) is a great result. It shows that Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson have got the horses in great order for their first races this season. It’s a credit to all the staff and to the horses themselves, because the conditions became pretty testing with the rain today.” Lollapalooza was the second major three-year-old placegetter of the weekend for Social Racing, whose white, grey and blue colours were also carried into a runner-up finish by Yokozuna in the Gr.3 Northland Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Ruakaka on Saturday. In Haste has moved into $10 fourth favouritism in the TAB’s fixed-odds market for the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton on November 8. Lucy In The Sky and the Northland Breeders’ Stakes winner Tajana are the equal favourites at $7, with Lodi Dodi the $9 third favourite. Sunday’s placegetters Lollapalooza and To Cap It All are now rated $16 and $12 chances respectively. View the full article

A visit to Wanganui last spring put To Bravery Born (NZ) (Snitzel) on a path towards elite age-group competition, and the son of Snitzel is set to follow a similar formula after another first-up success at Taupo on Sunday. To Bravery Born took out the first two-year-old race of the New Zealand season at Wanganui last year, beating Toretto and Ensign Aria by two lengths over 800m on August 31. The Te Akau Racing runner won again in a fresh state in his second start at Ellerslie in January, sealing a shot at the Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) in which he finished a close fourth behind stablemate La Dorada. In his other two starts as a juvenile, To Bravery Born ran third in the Gr.3 Matamata Slipper (1200m) and 10th in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m). To Bravery Born was gelded during the off-season and returned to competition with a promising second in a 900m trial at Taupo on August 4. He was set out as a $1.40 favourite for Sunday’s $40,000 Poverty Bay Turf Club 3YO (1100m) at Taupo, in which he was ridden by star comeback jockey Opie Bosson. To Bravery Born initially settled at the tail of the five-horse field as Faultless enjoyed an uncontested lead. But Bosson made his move a long way from home, sliding forward out wide to be third and well within striking distance coming up to the turn. Faultless had another kick in the straight and was hard to get past, but Bosson got the very best out of To Bravery Born and secured a tight victory by a nose. Faultless finished three and a quarter lengths in front of the third-placed Affirmative Action. It was one of four wins on the eight-race Taupo card for Bosson, who was also successful aboard Te Atatu Dream (NZ) (Complacent), Carsolio (Bivouac) and In Haste (Snitzel). His ride on To Bravery Born earned particular praise. “The winning of the race was when Opie (Bosson) made his move going up the rise nearing the home turn and got him out into the slightly better ground,” said Mark Walker, who trains in partnership with Sam Bergerson. “Opie is always hard to beat in a tight finish, and once again he was able to get the nose in front where it mattered. “It was great to see the horse extend his unbeaten fresh-up record to three. Safely through the race he’ll head to the Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m), on the same course where he won on debut.” The Wanganui Guineas will be run on August 30. The TAB responded to Sunday’s win by moving To Bravery Born into $10 for the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton on November 15. He is the fourth favourite behind Hostility ($4), He Who Dares ($8) and Landlock ($8). To Bravery Born was bred by Nearco Stud and was offered by Curraghmore in Book 1 of Karaka 2024, where David Ellis bought him for $200,000. His six-race career has produced three wins and $125,000 in stakes for the Te Akau Secret Identity Racing Partnership. View the full article

Less than 24 hours after losing one in the inquiry room, Sam O’Malley officially brought up the first win of his training career when Landman (NZ) (Hello Youmzain) took out the Buckley Contracting (1100m) at Woodville on Sunday. The former Group Two-winning jockey has gone into partnership this season with Bill Thurlow, having worked with the Waverley trainer for the last two seasons including a stint as stable foreman. The duo sent out their first three runners at New Plymouth on Saturday and seemed to strike immediate success with Our Lady Brooke (NZ) (Derryn) first past the post in the James Hardie Rating 65 (2000m), but the mare was relegated to second on protest. It was second time lucky on Sunday as Landman lived up to his $2.20 favouritism with a smooth win on debut. “It’s a good feeling,” said O’Malley, who was previously the winner of 70 races as a jockey. “We thought we had one yesterday but it was taken off us, so it’s nice to get one on the board this time around. “Winning a race as a trainer is a bit of a different feeling to doing it as a jockey, in two quite different stages of my career, but both of them feel good in their own way. Hopefully we’ve got a few more of them to look forward to.” O’Malley went into Sunday’s meeting with high hopes for Landman, a Hello Youmzain gelding co-bred and part-owned by Thurlow. He was a trial winner as a two-year-old last season and had shown good signs in the early stages of this preparation. “He’s a pretty fair sort of horse and has always shown a lot,” O’Malley said. “We took him for a gallop at Hawera last Sunday with Ladies Man, where he went really well. That gave us a pretty good line on him coming into a maiden race today. We knew he’d be hard to beat. “He goes pretty well and got the job done nicely today. I think we can look at something like the Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m) with him now.” The Wanganui Guineas will be run on August 30, a week before the traditional spring weight-for-age Triple Crown kicks off with the Gr.1 Proisir Plate (1400m) at Ellerslie. Thurlow and O’Malley will watch that race closely as their proven Group One performer Whangaehu (NZ) (Proisir) works towards the Gr.1 Howden Insurance Mile (1600m) at Te Rapa on September 27 and the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) at Ellerslie on October 18. “Whangaehu is coming up well and will probably head for those last two legs of the Triple Crown,” O’Malley said. “We’ve got some nice jumpers around us as well, so we’ve got a few horses that are ready to fire up over the next few weeks. It’s exciting and I’m looking forward to it.” View the full article

Velocity Surprises Del Mar Oaks Field at 35-1

Velocity is defined as the speed of an object going in a given direction, and the aptly named Velocity (Nyquist) proved to be moving fastest as she snuck up the fence to post a monster 35-1 upset in the GI Del Mar Oaks. A two-time winner by a combined margin of barely half a head, the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners colorbearer came into the race with a nose victory July 20 over this course against optional claiming company. When compared to the rest of the field, namely even-money favorite MGSW Thought Process (Collected) and 8-5 chance SW & MGSP Lush Lips (GB) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}), the betting public could only muster 35-1 odds for this daughter of Nyquist. In midpack as the pacesetter 'TDN Rising Star' SW & MGSP Casalu (Caracaro) rolled through an opening quarter in :23.22 and a half in :46.98, she was stuck on that fence as a wall of runners stood in her way entering the lane. Diving to the rail as the scramble to her outside finally produced open air, Velocity muscled her way to the fore and outkicked the closing Lush Lips to score her first black type of any kind. Thought Process managed to save third. Sales history: $27,000 Ylg '23 KEESEP; $75,000 2yo '24 OBSMAR. O-Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners; B-Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds (KY); T-Michael McCarthy. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – If In Her Glory (Constitution), a 2-year-old filly, were a boxer, she would be in the flyweight division. Not big enough for the varsity; start her out on the JV. Ok, you get the idea. In Her Glory is not a big-robust looking young horse. In Saturday's sixth race at Saratoga Race Course–a $100,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies going 5 1/2 furlongs on the Mellon Turf Course–In Her Glory looked 10 feet tall as she ran professionally down the stretch and won the race by a head over Sadie Earp (Tiz The Law). Sent off at odds of 7-1 in the field of eight, it may have come as somewhat of a surprise, at least a mild one. Those who know the little gal the best would not be included in that group. “She's a fighter,” trainer Michael Trombetta said after In Her Glory had gotten her picture taken. She also showed that she has plenty of athleticism in that slight frame of hers. How big–or small–she is is not really known. Trombetta said he does not weigh his horses and estimates that In Her Glory might tip the scales at the low end of 900 pounds. As far as her height, he said he doesn't measure that either. Another estimate: maybe 15 hands. “I think she is the smallest 2-year-old I have this year,” Trombetta said. Trombetta got an inkling that In Her Glory might have some talent when he watched her in her first start, at Colonial on July 19. After getting off a touch slow, she revved up and finished a clear second in the five-furlong race on the grass. What happened after she crossed the finish line got the trainer excited. “She looked hopelessly beaten down the backside and she came really rolling to finish a fast-closing second,” Trombetta said. “When the camera panned out around the turf, she was like 15, 20 lengths in front of the rest of the horses. I said, 'wow, she is just figuring it out.” Despite the impressive showing at Colonial, Trombetta wasn't sure if coming to Saratoga was the right move for her little girl. Yes, she had shown promise in her first start, but she would be facing tougher in the Saratoga spot. Charlotte Weber hugs jockey Luis Saez | Sarah Andrew Because he thought she showed athleticism and because she showed a tenacity in her debut, he threw caution to the wind and came to the Spa. The right decision. “She broke running and put herself in the race,” Trombetta said. “She was way closer than I thought she would be. I thought Wesley's (trainer Ward) horses (Sadie Earp and Santina (Maclean's Music) would be going like a bat out of hell but that did not really happen.” Guided by jockey Luis Saez, who had four winners on the Saturday card, In Her Glory was never worse than second and completed the distance in 1:03.55. She paid $17.20, $8.80 and $5.50. In Her Glory is owned and bred by Charlotte Weber's Live Oak Plantation. She is the first foal out of the mare Zonda (Scat Daddy). When she was born, Weber could not tell what this smallish filly might be like. “I could no more tell you that than I could fly,” Weber said with a laugh. “I had some 10 fillies, and you hope they come out alright and look alright. When you are in the breeding shed or the foaling shed you just hope you have a good baby and the birth comes alright.” In Her Glory hangs on to win R6 at Saratoga at 7/1 under @luissaezpty for trainer @trombetta_mike! pic.twitter.com/isXSJtHR4r — TwinSpires Racing (@TwinSpires) August 16, 2025 The post Saratoga Maidens Presented by Keeneland: Small in Stature, but In Her Glory Shows She Can Run appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Named a 'TDN Rising Star' when romping to a 12-length maiden victory over the adjacent Tapeta track back on July 13, Gold Square LLC's TWO OUT HERO (c, 2, War Front–Song River, by Liam's Map) split horses decisively with push coming to shove in Saturday's Soaring Free Stakes at Woodbine and finished nicely to take his record to two wins from as many tries and cap a wildly successful afternoon from the King's Plate-winning barn of Kevin Attard. Off as the 6-5 chalk, the $240,000 Keeneland September purchase could have flaunted the same sort of speed he exhibited on his debut run, but instead was settled just off the pace by Rafael Hernandez, as the previously unbeaten Casson (Caravaggio) showed the way. Traveling kindly on the back of the speed into the long Woodbine straight, it appeared as if Hernandez might duck to the inside of Casson, but instead he went for a run between rivals, squeezed through and kicked on nicely for a clear-cut victory. Argos (Nyquist), a debut winner sprinting over the Ellis Park turf for Riley Mott, ran home for third. Sales history: $240,000 Ylg '24 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0. Taking plenty of pari-mutuel support as the 11-10 favorite while making his career debut over 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Saturday, LITMUS TEST (c, 2, Nyquist–Study Hard, by Malibu Moon) ran to the money, earning a hard-fought one-length victory over his once-raced stable companion Falcon Jet (Justify). Off fairly from gate two, the $875,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling purchase was beaten for speed, as Sendit Mo (Yaupon) sped to the front from an outside draw. Driven along to pick up the leader as they neared the entrance to the stretch, the bay worked his way to the front with about an eighth of a mile to travel and stuck on gamely for the victory. The rail-drawn Falcon Jet, runner-up to 'TDN Rising Star' Buetane (Tiz the Law) and back on 13 days' rest, remained committed to the inside behind the leaders into and around the turn, came out for the drive to loom a threat and was outfinished in another solid effort. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In the category of “Can You Top This Story?” Elza Mitchum and his son, Alex, have a solid contender for the prize. Their aptly named colt 'TDN Rising Star' It's Our Time (Not This Time) produced the Mitchums' tale Saturday with a 17 3/4-length victory in the seventh race at Saratoga Race Course. Under Luis Saez, the Virginia-bred colt was the Mitchums' first career winner in their, yes, second start as owners. It's Our Time and Saez turned in their smoking performance in the $100,000 maiden special weight test for 2-year-olds, covering the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.63. The Virginia Beach, Va. residents, lifelong racing fans, purchased their first horses 11 months ago at the Keeneland September sale. They secured It's Our Time, bred by South Gate Farm and recommended by trainer Tom Amoss, for $425,000. “I've always loved horse racing,” Elza Mitchum said, “and my son and I just finally decided to go ahead and take the plunge.” That plunge came after plenty of years or considering when to move from fan to participating. “I wanted to do it all my life, but I figured I was young enough I could go ahead and start now,” Elza Mitchum said with a chuckle. Hero Declared (Maclean's Music), the 3-5 favorite, broke on top and set early fractions of :21.99 and :44.78. He led It's Our Time by 1 1/2 lengths after the first quarter and a head after a half-mile. By that point, It's Our Time was rolling. He forged a 10-length lead in the stretch and, though he was geared down in the final furlong, he continued to extend his advantage over Hero Declared. Amoss said that It's Our Time showed him he was ready for Saratoga's top test for 2-year-old maidens. “He's a horse that really, really advanced when he got up to here, and you can see it in his workouts,” Amoss said. “I think the real tell was his work from the gate. He worked extremely nicely. I know (Hero Declared) was a very nice horse going into today. My guy's a little guy, but today, David got the best of Goliath. May not happen next time, but we got him today.” The work that Amoss noted came on Aug. 2 when It's Our Time breezed a half mile in :47.83, the fourth-fastest of 153 at that distance that morning. Alex Mitchum said that the colt touted them with his training. “We were looking at the workout times and (Hero Declared) had good workout times, and so did we,” he said. “I think we had a really good break. You always have hope but you never know the trip around. I think Nelson's Penney (Munnings) on Wednesday, didn't get as good of a trip around. She was really boxed in the whole time. It really matters on how you break and get the trip around, but we're really happy with some of the splits that we are seeing in workouts.” Nelson's Penny was the first starter for the Mitchums' Double Down Horse Racing. She ended up fifth in her debut. Four days later, It's Our Time and his owners broke their maidens with a jaw-dropping victory. Alex Mitchum said his father decided he was ready to trying owning horses last year and started the process. “He's always been a huge fan and taking us to Colonial Downs or Laurel when I was a kid. And we've gone to the Derby a couple times,” Alex Mitchum said. “He's a big fan of Tom Amoss, so he reached out one night. We started talking, and ended up at Keeneland last year, bought a couple horses and here we are.” IT'S OUR TIME makes a statement in his debut! He breaks his maiden in Race 7 for trainer @TomAmossRacing with Luis Saez aboard who gets his third win of the day. pic.twitter.com/cLqSmgvLsh — NYRA () (@TheNYRA) August 16, 2025 The post Saratoga Maidens Presented By Keeneland: It’s Our Time Gives Rookie Owners Runaway MSW Triumph appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. In the 145th running of the GI Alabama Stakes, it was Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) who took home the elite level glory at Saratoga. Off well, but tasked with tracking La Cara (Street Sense) as that one zipped to the front, Nitrogen went wide into the first turn as the eager early leader set a slow :24.94 opening quarter, and posted an equally unhurried :49.70 half. With Good Cheer (Medaglia d'Oro) watching the action unfold in third behind a 1:13.24 six-furlong split, the top placings were largely unchanged through the final bend but Nitrogen was looming as they spun into the lane. Inhaling La Cara and wandering through the stretch, Nitrogen had more than enough to hold off Good Cheer, and the fillies gave their sire the exacta in the Grade I contest. Making just his second start around two turns and trying 10 furlongs for the first time in his career, Al and Bill Ulwelling's MANSETTI (c, 3, Collected–Gidget Girl, by Sky Mesa) made the most of his inside draw, leading every step of the way to take out Saturday's 166th running of the King's Plate at an overlaid quote of 18-1. Exiting an on-pace victory in the local GIII Marine Stakes, his first go at a two-turn route, the $40,000 OBS April purchase was sent into an early lead by young Pietro Moran and though he had to do some work through the opening quarter-mile in :22.93, the bay relaxed through the middle furlongs, covering the half in :47.45 and got a bit more of a breather after six panels in 1:12.48. Still going strongly on the turn and with nothing looking like making any serious inroads from the back, Mansetti upped the tempo while going farther in front, and although the distance began to take its toll in the final furlong, Mansetti was home first in 2:02.27 for the mile and quarter on the Tapeta track. Tom's Magic (Justify), a dual stakes winner on the grass, closed off well for second while trying a synthetic surface for the first time while favored Notorious Gangster (Classic Empire) came home third. It was the third King's Plate in the last four years for trainer Kevin Attard, who saddled the fillies Moira (Ghostzapper) and Caitlinhergrtness (Omaha Beach) to the victory in 2022 and 2024, respectively.
