  1. In-form gelding Semper Magico. Photo: Peter Rubery (Race Images Palmerston North) Christmas at the Races will head to Wanganui on Saturday and Awapuni trainer Mark Oulaghan is hoping some of the festive spirit comes his way when his in-form gelding Semper Magico lines-up in the Country Cup 2040. The son of Per Incanto has been in stellar form this preparation, winning four and placing in three of his seven starts this season. He placed in his last two starts at Trentham in the Staphanos Classic (2100m) and Felding Gold Cup (2100m) and Oulaghan is hopeful of an improved result this weekend. “He seems to have done things pretty right. His runs at Wellington were reasonably good so hopefully if he can hold that form he should be a show on Saturday,” Oulaghan said. “It is not an overly big field so it doesn’t really matter where he races but hopefully he will be handy and not too far off them and settled in behind somewhere.” Oulaghan has secured the services of three-kilogram claiming apprentice Jessica Allen, which will give Semper Magico some weight relief from his 60kg impost. While the eight-year-old has been up for some time, Oulaghan believes he deserves a tilt at stakes level and he may get that chance in the Listed Wanganui Cup (2040m) seven days later. “We will just see what the track looks like for the following week, he could back up in the Wanganui Cup, but we will just get through Saturday and go from there,” he said. Meanwhile, Oulaghan’s jumping team are nearing a return to work and he is particularly looking forward to having his Champion Jumper West Coast back in his barn. “They will come back in January and get pre-trained for five or six weeks and do a bit of hill work. They will then come back to the stable at the end of February,” he said. “It hasn’t been finalised, but West Coast will probably following a similar path to what he did this year.” More horse racing news View the full article
  2. Karaka trainer Lance Noble. Photo: Trish Dunell Lance Noble’s Karaka stable has made a fast start to the season and the momentum promises to roll on to Pukekohe on Saturday with an in-form team of five to do battle. The private trainer for Cambridge Stud has sent out eight winners this term with 19 in 2022/23 his highest tally, which included a best haul of four stakes successes, since joining Brendan and Jo Lindsay’s operation. He has posted a black-type brace this season and has prospects to advance that record at the weekend with Aquacade in the Group 3 Counties Cup (2100m) and Flamebird in the Group 2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m). Noble was a Group 1-winning trainer in his own right before he moved from Matamata to take up his current role and he’s never had cause to regret that decision. “There’s very few jobs like this, if any, in New Zealand and I’m very fortunate to have Brendan and Jo and Cambridge Stud’s support,” he said. “I can concentrate on training and the facilities are fantastic and I haven’t got the added pressures of running the business. “I am very, very grateful and aware of how fortunate I am. It’s coming up to seven years here now and time flies, my oldest son hadn’t started college then and now he’s in his second year at university.” Quality Dundeel mare Aquacade and rider Warren Kennedy promise to be a formidable combination in the Cup following their last-start success in the Group 3 Balmerino Stakes (2050m) on the track earlier this month. “I know Aquacade has got topweight and she’s a pretty good mare. I know it’s back to a handicap and she’s got 59kg, but she is really well,” Noble said. “She is a big mare too so I think she can carry the weight and you always worry about those lighter-weighted horses might get the advantage on you, but I’m going in with a really well and fit horse.” Flamebird was a course and distance winner at her most recent appearance to earn the daughter of Shooting To Win a crack at the Breeders’ Stakes in the hands of Kennedy. “There was a Rating 74 race over 1400m as well for her, but she’s in good form and we’re a stud so black type in hugely important,” Noble said. “It may be a little soon for her, but she’s in good form and it’s just down the road. If we can get a few breaks and sneak a bit of black type we would be thrilled.” On the undercard, Dazzled will step out in the Franklin Long Roofing (1200m) with Iffin Doubt Dance in the Stayers’ Championship (2100m) and Polygon to tackle the Ellerslie Events Handicap (1600m). “I think a case could be made that Dazzled should have nearly won last start,” Noble said. “She’s flying at the moment and she’s a really good hope.” The Pierro four-year-old was a first-up winner at Tauranga before she finished runner-up at Pukekohe after an interrupted run and will be partnered by Kennedy, as will Iffin Doubt Dance. She was at double figure odds when she successfully resumed and the Iffraaj mare followed up with a fifth placing over 1600m. “She didn’t cope with the wet track last time, she was good fresh-up when she won and then it got pretty wet at Te Aroha,” Noble said. “She was in the wrong part of the track and stepping up to 21oom will suit her and I think she’ll go well.” Dual Group winner Polygon, the mount of Vinnie Colgan, made late ground to finish seventh when resuming and is expected to continue to improve as she is stepped up in distance. “She was okay last time and probably came to the end of it,” Noble said. “I wasn’t initially going to go to Pukekohe, but she dropped a few rating points and I expect her go better again and then she’ll be ready to step up to 2000m.” More horse racing news View the full article
  3. Bonny Lass was an impressive winner at the Taupo trials on Wednesday. Photo: Trish Dunell Luck has never seemed be on the side of talented mare Bonny Lass, but co-trainer Graham Richardson is hoping her time in the spotlight nears after a standout performance at the Taupo trials on Wednesday. The lightly-raced five-year-old showed promise early in claiming her first Group victory as a juvenile, however, she has appeared just 15 times on raceday after a raft of incidents hindered her preparations, particularly over the past 12 months. “She’s had a lot of mishaps and bad luck over the last year, it’s incredible how much bad luck she’s had,” Richardson said. “She got hurt on the truck with her foot on the way to Te Rapa for the Railway (Group 1, 1200m) last year and had to be late scratched. “Then, the next time she went to the races she stood on her plate around at the barriers which was nothing to do with her first issue, and was a late scratching there as well.” Bonny Lass completed a muddled campaign last season finishing midfield in the Group 1 BCD Group Sprint (1400m) but resumed smartly in September when flashing home late under the 60.5kg topweight behind Johny Johny. Looking an ominous chance to defend her title in the Group 3 Sweynesse Stakes (1200m), the daughter of Super Easy sustained an untimely injury derailing those plans. “About six weeks ago she had to get nine stitches in her leg after injuring herself in the box and we have no idea how,” Richardson said. “She’s the quietest thing in the world, we’ve just had no luck with her.” Accompanied by Richardson’s training partner Rogan Norvall, Bonny Lass travelled to Taupo to contest an Open 1000m trial, in favour of Saturday’s Group 3 Counties Bowl (1100m) at Pukekohe. Leading from the outset under Ace Lawson-Carroll, the mare was never placed under pressure and travelled strongly to the line to score a dominant 2-3/4 length victory. “It was very impressive,” Richardson said. “I’ve spoken to Rogan as I’m at the sales, and she’s pulled up really well, she’s had a good blow and she’ll improve so much more from that. “We sent her to the trials today because she was on the back foot a bit fitness wise, hence why she’s not in on Saturday (at Pukekohe). She’s just not quite ready to go to the races and she would get a lot of weight.” The Matamata horseman is looking forward to getting the mare back on course, targeting the Open Handicap 1200m at Pukekohe on December 9, before looking to resolve unfinished business in the Group 1 Railway Handicap (1200m) on New Year’s Day. “I put Ace on her at the trials looking towards him probably riding her on the 9th of December, then hopefully Craig Grylls will ride her in the Railway,” he said. In-form four-year-old Channel Surfer will represent the stable at Pukekohe on Saturday, hoping to claim a third win from four starts this season in the Championship Qualifier (1400m). The son of Derryn recorded back-to-back victories in maiden and MAAT company early in his campaign, before a sharp third placing behind Adam I Am at Hastings with Joe Doyle on board, who retains the ride. “He’s drawn 10 which is okay, he’s a pretty handy horse,” Richardson said. “He’ll be nominated for the Karaka 4YO race ($1 million Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic, 1600m) which is the direction we’re taking, and we might throw in a nomination for the Thorndon Mile (Gr.1, 1600m).” Prior to the weekend’s action, Richardson attended the Wednesday session of the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale at Karaka, where he and Graham Wiggins were pleased to secure Lot 38, a Super Seth filly. A close relation to Group Two-winning sprinter Packing Rockstar, the pair went to $65,000 to purchase the filly out of Lilywhites Lodge’s draft. “Graham Wiggins and I will be syndicating her. She’s a very athletic filly,” Richardson said. More horse racing news View the full article
  4. Race 3 DRUG ALCOHOL TESTING SPECIALIST PREMIER MAIDEN 1400m GRAVITY (T Comignaghi) – Co-trainer Mr. M Pitman advised Stewards, the stable was satisfied with the post-race condition of the gelding, and it is their intention to carry on with GRAVITY’S current preparation. M Pitman further advised he will be applying a barrier blanket prior to the gelding’s next race day start. Race 6 AMICUS INSURANCE BROKERS PREMIER 2000m SECOND THOUGHT (M McNab) – Co-trainer Ms. A Furlong reported to Stewards, that on Thursday 16 November the mare underwent a veterinary examination including x-rays to the feet, which revealed SECOND THOUGHT requiring corrective shoeing. 6. By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk It was a day of firsts at Manawatu yesterday. In what was the latest of many successful trips north for the Canterbury-based father-son training-driving combo of Michael and Wilson House they combined for three wins with Boyz Invasion, Ask Me Lazarus and Bonney Eloise. It was Wilson’s first ever driving treble. “I’ve had a few doubles but never three before so that was nice, it was a great night.” Ask Me Lazarus also became the first progeny of the great Lazarus to win on New Zealand soil. It was her first win from four starts. “She’s got lovely high speed,” says House. In race 3 the Post Office Hotel Pahiatua Mobile Pace House secured the one-one with the two-year-old filly and then peeled out turning for home, going on to win by nearly a length. House’s first win of the night came with hot favourite Boyz Invasion in race 2, the Masterton Club Handicap Trot. The Brylin Boyz nine-year-old stepped well, led and cleared out by three lengths from a game Highview Rockn Roll to register his 12th win in 109 starts. And in race 6 the Pete’s Joinery and Building Greytown Mobile pace Bonney Eloise started off the unruly, was launched mid race by House and then held on by more than a length. “She’s a funny horse and has ability but she was a five-year-old maiden.” “Another of our good horses Superstar Legend is her three quarter sibling.” While Bonney Eloise (A Rocknroll Dance – Badlands Legend) had her first win in six starts Superstar Legend (Rock N Roll Heaven – Badland’s Legend) has won 13 from 114 starts. While he didn’t win the last of the night House was also impressed by the grit shown by Full Of Desire who was parked and then led the Connie Stewart Sotheby’s International Realty Mobile Pace, only to be pipped by favourite Mr President. Full Of Desire, and first night winners Bonney Eloise and Boyz Invasion will all be in action tomorrow night though Ask Me Lazarus will not. “She’s just a two-year-old so we’ve decided against backing her up.” The House stable currently has 51 wins in 2023 and is fourth overall behind Robert and Jenna Dunn (101), Mark and Nathan Purdon (73) and Mark Jones (55), with Wilson on 23 driving wins for the year. That puts him in eighth place overall in the junior ranks, with Sarah O’Reilly a runaway leader on 69. Thursday’s eight race meeting at Palmerston North starts at 5.06pm. View the full article

The star filly stormed home to win by just under a length after settling near the rear of the field. After jumping as an odds-on favourite, the daughter of Siyouni was never in trouble as Patrick Carbery kept her in clear air. Carbery pushed the button on his filly, and when he did, she ran down Bustler (+320) and Saintorio (+1600) within 100m to record her second Group 2 victory from six starts. 2021: Treasured Star claims WA Guineas in style Grant & Alana Williams, Bob Peters and William Pike have taken out their third WA Guineas in five years, with Treasured Star (+190) taking the 2022 edition of the Group 2 contest. The daughter of Toronado sailed home down the outside under the urgings of WA’s leading jockey to record a dominant 1.75-length victory over Stay Safe (+4000) and a further length over stablemate Devoted (+2000). 2020: Watch Me Dance makes history with WA Guineas victory Watch Me Dance (+750) became the second filly in over 60 years to complete the WA Champion Fillies Stakes/WA Guineas double. The Steve Wolfe-trained galloper joined Arcadia Queen who completed the double just two years prior in 2018. After settling outside the leader Em Tee Aye (+3000), the two settled down to fight out the finish in the final 200m, with the daughter of I’m All The Talk getting the better of the leader, while Dom To Shoot (+400) ran home into third place. 2019: Neville Parnham quinellas Group 2 WA Guineas War Saint (+3000) and Kaycee (+650) had to be split by the judge in a very tight photo finish in the Group 2 WA Guineas, with the former getting his nose down on the line to grab the photo. With both gallopers hailing from the Neville Parnham stable, it gave the stable the quinella; however, it would be the rougher of the two that would get the victory. The son of War Chant led every step of the way in the Guineas, and with 200m to go, it appeared as though his stablemate would run him down, but the filly couldn’t get past him. Red Can Man (+1100) battled on gamely to hold onto third place just behind the top two. 10. Brenton Avdulla celebrates his first four-timer in Hong Kong. Brenton Avdulla’s dazzling form has lifted him into the coveted final International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) spot and on Wednesday night the 32-year-old is aiming to seal his place with six mounts before the roster is finalised. The line-up is confirmed after tomorrow night’s eight-race fixture with three positions still open. Zac Purton, who leads the 2023/24 Hong Kong jockeys’ championship with 31 wins, features as Hong Kong’s current champion; two places remain for the next highest-ranked riders and one is available for the leading homegrown jockey. Karis Teetan (18 wins) fills the first spot in the injured Hugh Bowman’s (21) stead, while Vincent Ho’s four-win lead – 11 wins to seven – over Matthew Chadwick sees him hold the homegrown rider’s ticket (Angus Chung, 17 wins, is ineligible as an apprentice), leaving Avdulla (10), Lyle Hewitson (10), Andrea Atzeni (10) and Luke Ferraris (nine) all vying for the final position in the 12-rider competition. “Hugh is indisposed, so it’s a position now that’s afforded to someone else and if we can make the most of it on Wednesday night and grab that position – it’ll be an honour,” Avdulla said. Avdulla has nine wins from the last nine race meetings, while Sunday’s four-timer at Sha Tin pushed him into the final spot, which he holds on a countback with the most second placings over Hewitson and Atzeni. “Massive result. It was the first time I went to the races on a Sunday with that sort of book, a strong book of rides and I was able to capitalise on it. Hong Kong, we all know it’s about opportunities and trying to make the most of them,” Avdulla said. The overseas riders competing at the IJC on December 6 at Happy Valley are James McDonald, Ryan Moore, Yuga Kawada, Hollie Doyle, Tom Marquand, Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, Rachel King and Mickael Barzalona. The 12 jockeys will ride for HK$1 million, with the winner of the competition taking home HK$600,000. Two of Avdulla’s quartet came in tandem with John Size last weekend. He rides Savvy Delight for the trainer from barrier three tomorrow. “He seems to run to his mark the majority of his time there (at Happy Valley). He’s racing really well, he’s struggled to get another win on the board but he’s getting awfully close and the few times I’ve ridden him he’s loomed up and just fallen short, so hopefully tomorrow night he can get the job done,” Avdulla said. The Australian also partners Fire Ball, Fortune Master, Kyrus Unicorn, Maldives and Giddy Up at the city circuit. After nearly two years of waiting, Zoom Boom finally got a first win last start and trainer Douglas Whyte believes the lightly-raced five-year-old can further ascend the ranks when he lines up at Happy Valley Zoom Boom made his Hong Kong debut in 2022. The Irish-bred was limited to just four runs through the 2021/22 season, while he didn’t feature in 2022/23 after suffering a tendon injury two weeks prior to being gelded at the end of April, 2022. “It’s been a long journey and I have to be very thankful to the owner for their patience. “I took a bit of gamble bringing him back in distance and freshening him up. Obviously, the claim helped, but having said that he looked like he was in trouble – getting held up but he really hit the line strong. The light weight and a Class 3 tempo, it’s going to suit him,” Whyte said. The handler also saddles the last-start winning Durham Star with Zac Purton engaged. “There was a bit of speed on, he had a nice run in the race and he came out at the right time. It was good to see, hopefully he’s taken some confidence out of that and Douglas has him racing really well this season,” Purton said. Whyte indicated that Russian Emperor remains on track for his Hong Kong International Races assignment on December 10 at Sha Tin after finishing eighth in Sunday’s Group 2 Jockey Club Cup (2000m) behind Straight Arron. “He kind of looked like he got into a boxing match early with Straight Arron and then he was posted three-deep for most of the journey and he got cover but by the time he got cover the race became a sprint. “He changed his leg too early for me and (jockey) Matthew (Chadwick) said he accelerated into the race but he just couldn’t sprint, which I know he can’t – I was quite happy with the way that he stayed on,” Whyte said. 15. Butterworths buy Courageous Katie Courageous Katie, a yearling that raised $12,000 for the Katie Cox Appeal Fund, has been sold to some very high profile owners. The Creatine filly was offered up for sale by owner/breeder Gerald Cayford with all proceeds going to Cox who was recently diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer. It sold on Gavelhouse last Friday for $12,000 to well-known Victorian owners Merv and Meg Butterworth of Copy That fame. The money will be used for Cox’s treatment and on-going medical expenses. Merv Butterworth says he was taken by the breeding of Courageous Katie (Creatine – Ygritte) with Creatine a sire of promise and “the grand dam (of Courageous Katie) was A Touch Of Sun that was the dam of our star trotter King Denny who won two Derbys and a Jewels”. He was also keen to reward Cayford’s generosity and at the same time support Cox in her health battle. Dreams Are Free’s freakish run To put Dreams Are Free’s eye-watering win at Winton into perspective his time of 2:55.3 was only a snip outside the 2YO New Zealand record. He lost a stack of ground before catching the field and then powering home on Sunday over the 2400m. He was hand timed to run somewhere in the area of 2:53.3. His official time (2:55.3) compares to Republican Party’s existing record of 2:55.1 set at Ashburton in 2021. This is the same Republican Party who finished fifth in last Tuesday’s New Zealand Cup. Dreams Are Free is now being aimed at the Grand Prix at Addington on December 10. He’ll clearly take some catching. Smiffy’s Terror off to Oz Just days after racing in both the IRT New Zealand Cup (9th) and Friday’s Free For All (8th) at Addington it’s been confirmed Smiffy’s Terror will do his future racing in Australia. The five-year-old had 10 wins from 57 starts ($186,371) in this country including victory in the 2022 Methven Cup. He is heading to New South Wales. Southerners have milestone wins Veteran trainer Doug McLachlan bought up his 200th success at Winton on Sunday. A southern stalwart who breeds, owns and trains, McLachlan brought up the milestone with 11-year old Franco Huntington. Based at Myross Bush, McLachlan’s 200 winners came from 3303 starts with his first being Ronnie Mac at Invercargill in 1993. Meanwhile fellow Southland trainer Craig Laurenson brought up the century when Airwaves won in the hands of Rory McIlwrick at Winton on Sunday. His 100 wins came from 1607 starts, dating back to his first winner Zapp at Forbury Park in 1999. Dunn ton of training successes The Diamond Racing training partnership of Robert and Jenna Dunn have been the first to hit three figures this year. Rock Me Lou’s victory at Ashburton last week gave them 100 winners for 2023, a day before Triple G added to their total on Show Day. They are comfortable leaders of the premiership from Mark and Nathan Purdon on 73, and Mark Jones on 55. Blair Orange is a runaway leader in the driving ranks with 139 wins, with John Dunn next on 93. Nine wins in one night Winning sequences don’t come much better than this, on one night. At Batavia Downs in New York last weekend Jim Morrill had a UDR of .778 with nine wins on the 13-race card. He beat his single night record of eight set in 2005. He has 286 wins from 990 drives this year. Yearling catalogue out The catalogue is out for NZB Standardbred’s national yearling sale at Karaka on February 18. 2024 and then at Christchurch on February 20 and 21. Nearly 400 yearlings will go up for sale, 126 in Auckland and 267 in Christchurch. . To see more click here Club News : Timaru The Timaru Nursery Stakes promises to be a highlight of the Timaru Harness Racing Club’s twilight meeting on Saturday 25 November. With a $20,000 stake it has drawn some promising types in last start winners, Mighty Flying Lou and Always B Cocky and the consistent placegetter Major Hot. A time-honoured race, the Timaru Nursery Stakes was first run in 1936 and has had some great winners in the past including Highland Fling, Johnny Globe, Lordship, Tactile, Young Quinn, Master Mood and Tuapeka Knight. In 1959 20 two-year-olds lined up in the Timaru Nursery Stakes, won that year by Stanley Easton’s Sun Chief and driven by Doody Townley ( father of trainer Kevin Townley). Greg Brosnan of Brosnan Transport sponsors the race on Saturday and is a keen supporter of age group racing. Greg’s uncle is Richard Brosnan, former South Canterbury trainer of NZ Cup winner Bonnie’s Chance and Interdominion Trotter’s winner No Response. The other feature race is the Tyre General Timaru Summer Cup sponsored by Alan Neumann and the Neumann Family. Alta Meteor and Heisenberg, recent Show Day placegetters look promising. It has also attracted Southland visitor Hazer. Deceptive Lee owned by local Timaru doctors Bruce Small and John Fanning and co-owner/trainer David Mitchell is a past winner on the track and is one to follow. As well as the exciting racing, a Best Dressed Hat competition, Lucky Prize Draws, racebook quiz, Kids Go Racing packs and Lucky Numbers for the children are all on offer at Phar Lap Raceway, Timaru. Racing is underway at 1.25pm and will be broadcast on Trackside Two. 16. The Outstanding Off-track Worker Award, a national award open to those who hold a paid position at an off-track Thoroughbred racing, training, boarding, breeding, sales, or aftercare farm/facility in Canada, will be presented for the first time at the upcoming 49th annual Sovereign Awards, the Jockey Club of Canada announced Tuesday. “Success at the highest level in Thoroughbred breeding and racing is the result of a team effort centered on the best interests of the horse,” said R. Glenn Sikura, chief steward of the Jockey Club of Canada. “This team effort includes the work of off-track workers and starts even before foaling. These dedicated professionals offer diligent and tireless care for our equine athletes and are rarely, if ever, in the spotlight. We're proud at the Jockey Club of Canada to provide a significant opportunity to recognize these individuals for the work they do by inaugurating this national award for the Outstanding Off-track Worker. We look forward to submissions from across Canada for consideration by the selection committee.” Nominations for both the Outstanding Off-track Worker Award and the Outstanding Groom Award may be submitted online at the Jockey Club of Canada website or may be emailed to jockeyclubcanada@gmail.com until Dec. 17. The Jockey Club of Canada will host the Sovereign Awards Apr. 18 at the Paramount Eventspace, located at 222 Rowntree Dairy Road, Woodbridge, Ontario. Tickets will be available for purchase online at https://jockeyclubcanada.com/online-payments/. Program advertisement space, sponsorships, and tickets can also be purchased by contacting the Jockey Club of Canada at (416) 675-7756 or by emailing jockeyclubcanada@gmail.com. 17. Goffs has been a lucky place for the Finegan family of Milltown House Stud given they sold a foal at this complex for €250,000 in 2018 and the County Meath outfit reached similarly dizzying heights on Tuesday when a Ghaiyyath (Ire) colt fetched €200,000 to Tally-Ho Stud. The buyer in this story came in for special mention from Jack Finegan, the third generation of Finegans working on the family farm, who is under no illusions about the role the O'Callaghans of Tally-Ho Stud have played in their success in producing quality foals. The relationship, which was forged between Tony O'Callaghan and Finegan's grandfather Noel years back, continued on Tuesday when Tally-Ho Stud stuck their neck out for the quality Ghaiyyath colt. Jack, who is in his final year of Biomedical Science at University, led the €200,000 sale-topper around the ring and revealed how he wouldn't have missed the sale for anything. He said, “The O'Callaghans have always been amazing to us, always helpful with advice, even when we were much smaller than we are now. The O'Callaghans have always been there for us and Kodiac has been pivotal to our success and our growth. We are great family friends. There are three generations working on our farm-my grandfather Noel, who is now the great age of 93, my mother Jill and myself. “It's great that the three of us can work together on the farm but the O'Callaghans have always been amazing to us. We're delighted the horse has gone to Tally-Ho. He couldn't have gone to a better place.” Jack Finegan: “For a small stud farm, it means everything to us. We're very, very lucky.” | Goffs Finegan added, “This is up there with our best days. We sold Isle Of May (Ire), who was by Kodiac (GB), for €250,000 at this sale in 2018. This is probably our second-best sale and, for a small stud farm, it means everything to us. We're very, very lucky. “I'm still in University. I'm in my final year of Biomedical Science. I couldn't miss the sales. Even if I had labs or exams, the sales are top priority. Wouldn't miss it for anything.” The Ghaiyyath colt hails from the unraced High Chaparral (Ire) mare Experte (Fr), already a proven producer, given she is the dam of recent Legacy S. winner Pipsy (Ire) (Kodiac), who looks a smart filly in the making for trainer Ger Lyons. Roger O'Callaghan commented, “We've been lucky with Ghaiyyath. A great pedigree and a great farm. We've been doing business with the Finnegans since before my time. Dad and Jill's father Noel, who is 93, go back a long way.” Not only did Tally-Ho Stud sign for the top lot on Tuesday, but they have also been the busiest buyers at Goffs in terms of the aggregate, with nine foals bought for €611,000 so far this week. When it was put to O'Callaghan that trade was strong, he responded, “Proper order. We've bought nine so far and trade has been seriously good. I am delighted to see it–everyone getting a few quid. That's the name of the game.” JC Bloodstock and Pier House Stud were also involved in the battle for the Ghaiyyath colt and were involved in the bidding from €170,000 upwards. Of the 250 foals offered on Tuesday, 2016 were sold, which represented a clearance rate of 82%. The aggregate was down 9% on the corresponding day's trade last year to €7,608,500 while the average fell 4% to €36,935. Similarly to the Monday figures, the median rose 3% on Tuesday to €31,000 on what was overall another solid day of trade. Day To Remember For The Donworths As Earthlight Continues To Shine The husband-and-wife team of John and Mary Donworth, along with their daughter and Goffs employee Orla, enjoyed a day to remember when their Earthlight (Ire) homebred hit the heights when selling to Camas Park Stud for €115,000. Consigned by Galbertstown Stud, the colt out of Zebedee (GB) mare Stone Roses (Ire), who John bought shortly after retiring back in 2016, provided a special day for the family. “I didn't expect him to make the money he made,” John said after the sale. “You could say we are shocked by how much he made but we always knew he was a terrific foal. From the moment he was born, he was a very friendly foal who caused no issues and did well all summer. I need to thank my wife Mary, who is the heart behind the breeding operation and obviously my daughter Orla, who assists in making the big decisions. “Our mare was bought in 2016–I had retired at 65 on the 16th of November and two days later I spent a chunk of money here on two mares. The rest is history as one of those mares was Stone Roses.” Asked what attracted him first to Stone Roses, who Donworth bought for €22.000, he added, “We were looking for a young mare and she was a winner so she ticked two boxes. We liked Zebedee and the mare had a nice head, was a good mover and was an athletic mare. That's basically why we bought her. She'd four good feet and could walk well.” The sale represented yet more joy for those rowing in behind Earthlight, with the Kildangan-based stallion building on a strong yearling sale season with his foals. A day on from an Earthlight colt topping the opening session at €80,000, a total of four Earthlight foals sold for a combined €301,000. Donworth commented on the stallion, “Selecting sires can be like Russian roulette at our level because we're not in it very high. We need to choose our sires very carefully and Earthlight will have runners next year, but we always liked Shamardal and he has produced very good stock. “Obviously Earthlight has been lucky from the point of view that Blue Point (Ire) has done so well. I have to thank Orla for selecting Earthlight as she reckoned he was an up-and-coming sire.” Orla Donworth wasn't the only Goffs employee to land a touch on the day. Conor Wixted, the Senior Bloodstock Executive with the sales company, sold his Earthlight filly for €42,000 through Clare Manning's Boherguy Stud. Wixted, 27, enjoyed a good payday at Part 2 of the Orby Sale when an Equiano (Fr) colt he sourced alongside Joan Tyner for €6,500 made €26,000. Well, he proved he's no one-trick pony here on Tuesday with the Earthlight given he sourced the mare for just €4,000. Commenting on the success, he said, “I only have two mares and I suppose all of the credit has to go to Clare Manning as she did all of the work. This particular mare only cost €4,000 so it's a good result.” Wixted added, “Earthlight has a very good profile. He was a smart racehorse and his yearlings sold well. It's good to see his foals are similarly popular here this week. The mare is back in foal to Sottsass (Fr).” 'I Love The Sire' – Havana Grey Keeps On Delivering It seems as though pinhookers can't' get enough of Havana Grey (GB). And who could blame them given the supersonic time of things the stallion has enjoyed in the ring and on the racetrack? A colt by the Whitsbury Stud-based sire created a buzz on Tuesday before eventually being knocked down to Frannie Woods of Abbeylands Farm for €130,000. Lot 393 was bred by Whitsbury and consigned by Olive O'Connor Bloodstock. According to Woods, the colt will be offered for resale next year. Top pinhookers Pier House Stud also struck for a colt by Havana Grey for €90,000 earlier in the session and there was an interesting little backstory to the sale. Jerry Horan snapped up the dam Style And Grace (Ire) (So You Think {NZ}) in foal to Havana Grey for just 12,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale last year. The County Wicklow-based operator, who also consigned the Havana Grey colt under Ballynure Park Stud, commented, “Sure what can you say about the sire? I bought three mares in foal to Havana Grey and I have four yearlings by him as well. I love the sire. He's a sire sensation. This is a good individual and thankfully he went down well.” A total of seven Havana Grey foals have sold on Monday and Tuesday for a total of €484,000 and an average of €69,143. Gestut Hony Hof Draft Adds Layer Of Intrigue The Gestut Hony Hof provided an extra layer of intrigue deep into the Tuesday session. Owned by Manfred and Edith Hellwig, the operation is perhaps most famous for producing Prix du Cadran winner Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}), and offered nine foals through The Castlebridge Consignment towards the end of the sale. The draft was headed by a Sioux Nation colt out of Westfalica (Ger) (Areion (Ger), who was twice placed at listed level in Germany. The Sioux Nation colt was the penultimate horse into the ring but it didn't hold him back as many of the top buyers stuck around, with Goodwill Bloodstock winning out at €125,000. Meanwhile, a Galiway (GB) colt from the draft was similarly well-received, with JC Bloodstock snapping him up for €120,000. The Galiway colt boasts a nice pedigree being a son of listed performer All For Rome (Ger) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). Lucky Vega Capturing The Imagination The strength behind Lucky Vega (Ire)continued on Tuesday with 12 foals selling for an average of €38,917. Under the banner of the imaginatively-named Lucky Vega, Yuesheng Zhang, whose colours were carried by the Group 1-winning juvenile, supported his stallion further by snapping up two more foals by the Irish National Stud resident. The Lucky Vega partnership, which has been headed this week by Sam Fairgray, chief operating officer for Yulong, have now bought three foals by their stallion this week to the tune of €172,000. Buy of the day If it's good-walking foals you are into, well then feast your eyes on lot 391, an Australia (GB) colt bought by Apollo Bloodstock for €72,000. Out of a black-type performer Coeue d'Amour (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), the Australia colt is from the family of the ultra-consistent and classy Oscula (Ire) (Galileo {GB}). He was bought from Norelands to be resold and looks just the type to rock into six figures back at the Orby next year. Thought of the day It never ceases to amaze the appetite among the younger generation to get involved in the bloodstock game, perhaps no more so in the pinhooking side of things. The amount of new and young faces on the sales ground on Tuesday was encouraging. 24. Hayley Turner, Britain's most successful female jockey, received a standing ovation from her fellow members of the weighing-room when becoming the first woman in Europe to ride 1,000 winners. Turner, 40, reached the notable landmark at Chelmsford City on Tuesday evening aboard Tradesman (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) for Khalifa Dasmal and David Simcock. The same owner-and-trainer combination was responsible for Turner's first Group 1 win aboard Dream Ahead in the July Cup of 2011. Back in 2008, Turner also became the first female jockey in Britain to ride 100 winners in a year. She retired from race-riding in 2015 and turned her attention to broadcasting. After reappearing in August 2016 to captain the winning all-female team in the Shergar Cup at Ascot, she returned to the saddle full time in 2018. “I did drag it out a little bit but I got there eventually,” said Turner on Racing TV. “It's taken me plenty of time, and it's nice to see the girls coming through behind me that are up and coming, the likes of Hollie [Doyle], Saffie [Osborne], Nicola [Currie] and Josephine [Gordon] all riding so well every day. Although it's taken me 20 years to do it, hopefully it will take them half the time.” She added, “Unfortunately Khalifa Dasmal is not here but hopefully he is watching at home. I've had a lot of fun on his horses over the years.” A month after her breakthrough success on Dream Ahead, Turner landed her second Group 1 victory in the Nunthorpe S. on Margot Did (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) for her former boss Michael Bell. She also won the GI Beverly D S. for Simcock with I'm A Dreamer (Ire) (Noverre). She said, “It was particularly nice to have a Group 1 winner for Michael Bell with Margot Did in the Nunthorpe as he was really responsible for getting my career going as an apprentice. He put his neck on the line when girls weren't that popular. “It feels like a bit of a relief now that I've done it. I'm chuffed.” In 2016, Turner received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II for services to horseracing.
