Two Ghosts, Witwatersrand Win Woodbine Stakes

ARCADIA, USA — They got what they came for. Breeders' Cup Saturday delivered two storybook results right off the bat: victory for the fabled Cody's Wish (Curlin) and a 15th win at the championships for Frankie Dettori, whose thoughts of retirement are now firmly consigned to the past. And that was just in the first two races. Amid a huddle of reporters by the tunnel entrance as the runners went to post for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, one of the most seasoned of American racing writers muttered, “The suspense is officially killing me. This is the one we all want to see.” As it transpired, in the race with true world championship claims, we weren't far off seeing an American winner in the race traditionally dominated by visitors from Europe. Todd Pletcher's Up To The Mark (Not This Time) posted a valiant best-of-the-rest effort but there was no pegging back Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who became the first Derby winner since his fellow Coolmore campaigner High Chaparral (Ire) to go on to win the Turf. With two duck eggs in the 2,000 Guineas and King George, Auguste Rodin had something of a will-he-won't-he reputation coming into this, but there is no denying the significant body of work he has compiled since winning the G1 Futurity Trophy a year ago. The Derby, Irish Derby, Irish Champion S., and now a Breeders' Cup, on three occasions beating King Of Steel (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who had created such a buzz on Champions' Day at Ascot only a fortnight earlier and who finished best of the other European-trained horses in fifth. At the post-race press conference, Coolmore's MV Magnier referred to the ease with which Auguste Rodin had handled the dirt in training this week, as outlined in TDN on Friday, and he dangled the tantalising prospect of the colt staying in training next year to return for the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar. “He's a remarkable racehorse and he's very well bred,” Magnier said. “We could stand him in Ashford [Kentucky]. We could stand him in Europe. Or we could keep him in training next year. “I have this lovely romantic idea about maybe bringing him back for the Classic next year. Like Aidan said on Thursday, he was floating over the dirt. So there's a lot of options open. We'll have to decide in the next week or so.” Aidan O'Brien, whose record seven wins in the Turf began with the aforementioned dual winner of the race, High Chaparral, lauded Ryan Moore's “incredible ride” and he wasn't the only one. In fact the only person playing it down was Moore himself, who hopped on third-placed Aesop's Fables (Ire) in the Turf Sprint after his victory and then hotfooted it to the airport for a 16-hour flight to Australia, where he will ride Melbourne Cup favourite Vauban (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) on Tuesday. “I'm just delighted that a horse like him, he's vindicated himself now,” he said of Auguste Rodin. “Ending up on the rail was Plan F really. I just had to make the best of the opportunities as they came. He was getting a bad trip and I think he won because he's so good. I made the right call but it could have been the wrong call as well, but because I had so much horse he was able to overcome things. To me, he won despite things not going as smoothly as they should have done, and I think that marks him out to be a good horse.” Moore had earlier been only inches away from another victory when thwarted by a dazzling stretch run by Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the Filly & Mare Turf. Any lingering doubts as to whether the four-year-old would see out the 10 furlongs were quashed as she tanked on round the bend after catching Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the shadow of the post. The lady was not for stopping after gathering her sixth Group/Grade 1 win, but she will be stopping at the Gosdens' Clarehaven Stables, with her owner/breeder Richard Thompson of Cheveley Park Stud swiftly declaring that Inspiral would remain in training at five. That's great news for racing fans, who, if Inspiral makes it back to Royal Ascot, will almost certainly see Dettori back there too. He may not have confirmed it himself in the aftermath but it is clear that he is the one whom connections will want back in the saddle next year. A champion at two, a champion at three and surely this year's champion older filly, Inspiral's defection from Ascot on Champions Day was very much Santa Anita's gain. “She was pointing for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot but the rain arrived and we didn't even declare her to run,” said her co-trainer John Gosden. “She's very opinionated and very strong-minded. You go with the flow with her, there's no point getting in an argument.” He added, “I think what is particularly fulfilling is that she's owner-bred.” Indeed, it was a good day for homebreds, especially those in the royal blue. After Godolphin America's early triumph with Cody's Wish, its two Newmarket stables delivered the closest finish of the day when Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) was cruelly denied on the line by Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Saeed Bin Suroor had got Godolphin's European campaign off to a great start in 2023 when saddling Mawj to win the 1,000 Guineas. After her Grade I win at Keeneland three weeks ago, she failed by the flimsiest of margins to emulate her half-brother Modern Games (Ire) in winning at the Breeders' Cup, with Master Of The Seas completing a rallying late charge from Charlie Appleby's stable, which also won last weekend's G1 Kameko Futurity Trophy with Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}). Appleby's Breeders' Cup record is quite extraordinary: he recorded his first ever Grade I winner here a decade ago when Outstrip (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) won the Juvenile Turf, and he maintained his 50% strike-rate by notching his tenth victory with Master Of The Seas. And, who knows, we could yet see Master Of The Seas and Mawj back again in 12 months' time as both are remaining in training and heading next to Dubai. It was perhaps too much to hope that Live In The Dream (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}) could offer up the perfect finale and clean sweep for Europe in the turf races on Saturday. The bonny little chestnut has been a pleasure to watch in the mornings, sauntering around Santa Anita as if he's been there all his life. He has already perhaps surpassed the wildest dreams of owners Steve and Jolene De'Lemos and trainer Adam West by winning the G1 Nunthorpe S. in August, and he has brought them all on the journey of a lifetime to California. The bullet-fast four-year-old broke as sharply as ever but just couldn't sustain his early exertions, finishing an honourable fourth, a length and a quarter off the winner Nobals, a gelded (obviously) son of Frankel's brother Noble Mission (GB). There was no Hollywood ending for the most enthusiastic set of connections to arrive in LA this week, but the dream lives on. The Michael Maroney-trained Alenquer will make his first appearance in the Melbourne Cup since arriving to Australia. It’s always been an option for this lightly-raced European Group 1 winner – but his form since his arrival hasn’t reached the heights of his success in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup (2100m) at Curragh in May 2022. His form has left a lot to be desired, yet to find a minor placing since. The son of Adlerflug has been making steady improvement this campaign, however, finishing ninth 3.4 lengths away in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m). There’s no doubt this six-year-old will need to take big improvement to feature in the race that stops the nation; however, with the key booking of Damien Oliver in his last Melbourne Cup ride, he might be considered the sentimental favourite. When will Alenquer run in the Melbourne Cup? The Melbourne Cup will be run on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington, with a capacity crowd expected to cheer home their favoured runners. Theres 24 quality gallopers engaged every year, and the 2023 edition is no different, with Australian and Internationals alike. All the runners set to line up will be attempting to etch their name into racing folklore, and of course, claim their piece of the $8.41 million in prizemoney on offer. Can Damien Oliver claim another Melbourne Cup win on his farewell tour? It looks unlikely that the three-time Melbourne Cup hoop will do it aboard Alenquer, but stranger things have happened. The six-year-old gelding from Mike Moroney’s barn will need a massive form reversal, as he has been comfortably held in his three starts this spring. He had traffic issues at his last start, finishing ninth in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m), when going to the line under a relative hold. He’ll be in the second-half of the Melbourne Cup field upon settling and we doubt he will make up much ground on his more fancied rivals. It's been a year of ups and downs for trainer Larry Rivelli, who saddled the very talented Two Phil's (Hard Spun) to a runner-up effort in the GI Kentucky Derby and subsequent victory in the GIII Ohio Derby before a premature retirement to stud. The conditioner was dealt another blow this week when One Timer (Trappe Shot) was ordered scratched from a potential appearance in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, but the gelding NOBALS (g, 4, Noble Mission {GB}–Pearly Blue, by Empire Maker) parlayed a ground-saving trip into a 12-1 upset in the five-furlong dash. The well-supported Live In The Dream (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) hit the ground running, but he had company from Japanese raider Jasper Krone (Frosted) through an opening quarter in a slick :21.15. When the latter failed to handle the tight left-handed turn and began to struggle, Live In The Dream was left alone up front, but had gone hard and the come-from-behinders were licking their chops. Defending champ Caravel (Mizzen Mast) came there with a winning chance, but it was Nobals who rode the rails into the stretch and the final furlong and drove home first. Big Invasion (Declaration of War) also rallied up the inside for second ahead of Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never), who raced over the top to claim third spot. Sales history: $3,500 Ylg '20 FTKOCT. In a story of ultimate redemption, trainer Rick Dutrow, Jr., who won the 2005 GI Breeders' Cup Classic with future Horse of the Year Saint Liam, but is better known for having spent 10 years away from the game owing to suspension, got his second victory in the race when WHITE ABARRIO (c, 4, Race Day–Catching Diamonds, by Into Mischief), making his first appearance since romping clear in the GI Whitney S. at Saratoga exactly three months ago, pounced on pacesetting 'TDN Rising Star' Arabian Knight (Uncle Mo) leaving the eighth pole and held off a tenacious Derma Sotogake (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits) to win the $6-million GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita Saturday afternoon. Arabian Knight jumped alertly and crossed down to the rail as Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) showed speed as expected to fuel the pace. White Abarrio landed in third and eyeballed the top two, while Derma Sotogake, returning to the races for the first time since a sixth in the GI Kentucky Derby fully six months ago, raced handy as well. Arabian Knight and Saudi Crown continued to slug it out at an unsustainable pace, and White Abarrio, perfectly placed throughout, was there to take advantage. Coming after a spent Arabian Knight as Saudi Crown hoisted the white flag a half-furlong earlier, White Abarrio went for home and was across the line first as Derma Sotogake stayed on gamely for second. Proxy (Tapit) came from the clouds to be third. Sales history: $7,500 Ylg '20 OBSJAN; $40,000 2yo '21 OBSMAR. Lifetime Record: 15-7-1-3. Sent off the 5-2 chalk in Saturday's GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf in a season that has included victories in the G1 Derby at Epsom and in the Irish equivalent as well as the G1 Irish Champion S., the Coolmore partners' AUGUSTE RODIN (IRE) (c, 3, Deep Impact {Jpn}–Rhododendron {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) enjoyed a dream trip beneath Ryan Moore, got through when the real running commenced at the head of the lane and charged to the wire to defeat top U.S. hope Up to the Mark (Not This Time). Positioned in about midfield for the run down the hill, Auguste Rodin jinked to his right when not handling the dirt crossing particularly well and he was deftly maneuvered down towards the inside before the Turf field made their way under the wire with a circuit to travel. Racing with cover on the back of 2022 G1 Dubai Sheema Classic hero Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) as they hit the midway point of the race, Auguste Rodin was always moving sweetly and continued to follow the move of the Japanese raider around the turn. When Cristian Demuro opted to let Shahryar drift off the inside nearing the quarter pole, Moore seized upon the opportunity to allow his mount to creep forward. Long-time leader Balladeer (Distorted Humor) still held the call after the opening 10 furlongs, but he hung to his right off the final corner and that was all that Moore and Auguste Rodin needed, as they hit the hole and pinched a break before holding Up to the Mark to the line. Shahryar was a good third. Lifetime Record: 10-7-1-0. O-Michael B Tabor, Westerberg, Mrs John Magnier and Derrick Smith; B-Coolmore; T-Aidan O'Brien. In 2022, Hill 'n' Dale's Curlin got a record-setting three winners on Saturday's Breeders' Cup card. In 2023, he added two more as Juddmonte homebred Idiomatic (Curlin–Lockdown, by First Defence) gave the sire an encore to the win by Cody's Wish in the GI Dirt Mile earlier on the card with a hard-fought victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. GI Alabama S. winner Randomized (Nyquist) went to the Distaff lead when the gates flew as Idiomatic stalked in third behind :22.31 and :46.26 fractions. Idiomatic began moving on Randomized with three furlongs to go as MGISW Clairiere–another daughter of Curlin–found a dream seam from the back of the field. It was a scramble to the finish, but Idiomatic, a super-sized filly, prevailed by wearing down Randomized as Spinster second Le Da Vida (Chi) (Gemologist) outfinished Clairiere for third. Idiomatic, who kicked off 2023 with two optional allowance wins at Turfway Park, capped a stellar year as she won her last five straight, including the GI Spinster S. and GI Personal Ensign S. Knightsbridge (c, 2, Nyquist–Tyburn Brooke, by Bernardini) aired out in his Churchill Downs debut Saturday to become the newest 'TDN Rising Star' and the second overall for his sire. The Godolphin homebred, a half-brother to GISW Speaker's Corner (Street Sense), was outrun out of the chute and raced covered up against the rail in mid pack. Moving up under his own power, the 5-2 second choice ran into a wall of horses all gunning for the lead and had to check back out of a tight spot right at the half-mile marker. Shuffled back to fifth, James Graham finally had a gap open up for his mount between horses midway around the far turn and, once he said go, Knightsbridge swept up three wide and hit the quarter pole under only a hand ride from Graham. Straightened for the run home, the dark bay was visually impressive, motoring into the final sixteenth to win by as much as he pleased. Tyburn Brook, though unraced herself, hit a home run with her first foal being GI Carter H. winner and now Darley America stallion Speaker's Corner. Out of a daughter of GI Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Round Pound–who Godolphin purchased for $5.75m as a broodmare out of the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Sale–Knightsbridge's dam is herself a half to G1SW Long River (A.P. For the third straight time, a runner representing Godolphin has proven best in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile, as MASTER OF THE SEAS (IRE) (g, 5, Dubawi {Ire}–Firth of Lorne {Ire}, by Danehill) snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after overcoming gate 14 of 14 to just pip the commonly owned Mawj (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), the half-sister to two-time Breeders' Cup winner and defending Mile champion Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Off at 33-10 despite the horrible draw, the 5-year-old was allowed to take up a spot at the back of the field early on as Win Carnelian (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) was kept company by Astronomer (Air Force Blue) and when the latter went on with it into the turn, that allowed Mawj to sit the ideal trip from third. Still back second-last down the backstretch as the leaders went past the half in a searching :45.37, Master of the Seas got underway passing the three eighths and his only choice was to take the overland route into the lane. Mawj was still going very well up front and appeared to have stolen a winning advantage, but William Buick kept after Master of the Seas and was up on the wire to take it by a long nose. Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) turned in a typically game effort in third. He is the third straight Mile winner sired by the phenomenal Dubawi. O/B-Godolphin; T-Charlie Appleby.
