  1. For the third straight time, a runner representing Godolphin has proven best in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile, as MASTER OF THE SEAS (IRE) (g, 5, Dubawi {Ire}–Firth of Lorne {Ire}, by Danehill) snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after overcoming gate 14 of 14 to just pip the commonly owned Mawj (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), the half-sister to two-time Breeders' Cup winner and defending Mile champion Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Off at 33-10 despite the horrible draw, the 5-year-old was allowed to take up a spot at the back of the field early on as Win Carnelian (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) was kept company by Astronomer (Air Force Blue) and when the latter went on with it into the turn, that allowed Mawj to sit the ideal trip from third. Still back second-last down the backstretch as the leaders went past the half in a searching :45.37, Master of the Seas got underway passing the three eighths and his only choice was to take the overland route into the lane. Mawj was still going very well up front and appeared to have stolen a winning advantage, but William Buick kept after Master of the Seas and was up on the wire to take it by a long nose. Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) turned in a typically game effort in third. He is the third straight Mile winner sired by the phenomenal Dubawi. O/B-Godolphin; T-Charlie Appleby. 2. By Adam Hamilton Ladies In Red stamped herself as the best Australian mare of the modern era with a stunning Group 1 Queen of the Pacific at Melton last night. The mind blowing win moved trainer Emma Stewart to say: “She’s a freak.” Ladies In Red was having her just third run back from almost a year out and destroyed a vintage crop of mares – including Encipher and Amore Vita – to win by 11.6m. Her 1min53.8sec mile rate for 2760m took a thumping 1.8sec off the race record and was just 0.6sec outside the track record set by Tiger Tara in the 2019 Hunter Cup. Incredibly, Ladies In Red has raced just 30 times for 24 wins and six seconds. Last night’s win made her just the second million-dollar earner Stewart has trained. Encipher is the other, courtesy largely of her TAB Eureka win in September. “There’s no substitute for racing and those two runs back from so long out really helped her, but getting out to the long trip really suits her,” driver David Moran said. “She was right back to her very best tonight.” Former Kiwi mare Rakero Rebel continued her fantastic form with a brave second to Jess Tubbs and Greg Sugars. Kiwi-owned mare Amore Vita lifted after looking under pressure at the 400m to run a fighting third. Encipher had to do all the work outside leader Braeview Kelly in sizzling time and held on well for fifth, while the leader dropped out to run second-last. X X X The Kiwi horse everyone told Gary Hall Sr not to buy scored an upset win in Friday night’s $200,000 Group 1 WA Pacing Derby at Gloucester Park. Skylou caught Hall Sr’s eye while watching some Alexandra Park racing a few months back and he rang his Kiwi “man” Peter Blanchard asking him to buy the then Peter Brown-trained gelding. “Everyone said don’t buy him because he failed a vet as a two-year-old, but it was a bone chip in a knee and they said it would dissolve over time, which it has,” Hall Sr recalled. “He cost a bit, but it seems cheap now. He’s a nice horse and should keep improving.” Skylou, driven by young gun former jockey Maddison Brown, led then took a sit on boom pacer and raging hot favourite Never Ending before gunning him down late. Never Ending, regarded by many as Australia’s best three-year-old and driven by Hall’s son Gary Jr, missed a key lead-up race two weeks earlier and cost himself night by getting very keen in front through the middle stages. “Going into the race I didn’t think we could beat him (Never Ending), but I said to Karen (Hall Sr’s wife) with a lap to go that I thought we would win it because Never Ending had over raced so much in front,” Hall Sr said. “Gaz (Hall Jr) said after the race Never Ending got far too keen and sucked wind, but Skylou still went great. They beat the rest by about six lengths.” Remarkably, Hall Sr said Skylou was only the third best three-year-old in his stable behind Mister Smartee (ninth in the Derby) and Im The Black Flash (third). “I’m just disappointed I talked Stewie McDonald out of driving the winner, but I really thought Mister Smartee was the better chance. Nothing went right for him. “Mister Smartee is and will be my best, but Im The Black Flash is going to make a really serious horse, too.” Skylou won by 3.6m from Never Ending with another 17m away to Im The Black Flash third in a 1min56.3sec mile rate for the 2536m trip. Hall Sr’s win with Skylou was his sixth in the WA Derby – all with Kiwi imports. The others have been: Major Trojan (2019), King Of Swing (2018), Chicago Bull (2016), Beaudiene Boaz (2015) and Alta Christiano (2013). Now Hall Sr turns his attention to the race he has made his own, next Friday night’s $450,000 Group 1 WA Pacing Cup at Gloucester Park. Diego gave him a staggering 13th win in WA’s marquee race earlier this year and will be a big chance again next Friday, along with Jumpingjackflash. X X X Inter Dominion favourite Leap To Fame missed a place for just the second time in his 34-start career last night. But it was the result of a horror draw and no racing room rather than anything he did wrong. Leap To Fame drew inside the back row and was buried four-back on the inside in the 1660m Be Good Johnny Sprint at Albion Park. As hard as trainer-driver Grant Dixon tried to get away from the inside, he couldn’t and then had to wait and dash home late along the inside when the race was all over. Leap To Fame closed impressively for fourth. He will back-up in the much more suitable Group 1 Queensland Cup at Albion Park next Saturday night as his final lead-up before the Inter Dominion heats on December 1. The Be Good Johnny was won by Future Assured, who trailed leader and former Kiwi pacer Turn It Up throughout. There was also plenty to like about Hot And Treacherous’ fifth after doing the work outside the leader at his first run back from a let-up. X X X While Swayzee prepares for Tuesday week’s IRT New Zealand, Jason Grimson’s other key Inter Dominion contender Himanameisjeff returned to winning form at Menangle last night. Driver Cam Hart took the gelding straight to the front from gate eight and won as he liked. Himanameisjeff has won five of six runs for Grimson with the only other run being a 10th in the Victoria Cup. “He got back and wasn’t really comfortable coming around the bends in the Cup,” Hart said. Hi Manameisjeff paced a 1min50.2sec mile last night, dashing home in 53.2 and 26sec flat. X X X Will it be third time lucky for star pacer Magnificent Storm in the Group 1 WA Pacing Cup? Trainer Ray Williams admits he hasn’t had his stable star primed the past two attempts, but he looked right on target for Friday night’s $450,000 feature. Magnificent Storm followed a slashing first-up second with an easy $50,000 Navy Cup (2130m) win at Gloucester Park last Friday night. It’s been a juggle for Williams to prime Magnificent Storm given his disappointing Queensland winter campaign and the fact the WA Pacing Cup was brought forward from January to next Friday night. “He’s had a lot of work and the two runs back. He’s ready, but it’s an open race and the draw will be important,” Williams said. X X X Arcee Phoenix is a young trotter going places. His seven wins (and two seconds) from just 10 starts this season have booked him a trip to the Brisbane Inter Dominion next month. And the four-year-old is into fourth favourite for the final, behind only stars like Just Believe, Queen Elida and Ollivici. Trained and driven by Chris Svanosio, Arcee Phoenix toyed with his rivals to win the feature trot at Melton last Saturday night by 6.7m in a 1min55.1sec mile rate for 1720m. View the full article
  3. By Jonny Turner A good day out at Ascot Park is exactly what Kirstin Green’s team needs before New Zealand Cup week. The trainer-driver has Addington targets in mind for most of the strong seven-horse team she has entered. Betting Sensation will clash with her stablemate Carrera Sunset in a small but talented lineup of three-year-old fillies. After an excellent last-start second at the same track, Betting Sensation looks among the best of the Green team stepping out at Ascot Park. “I think Betting Sensation – she’ll have the fitness edge over Carrera Sunset,” the trainer-driver said. “Carrera Sunset has taken a little bit longer to come back to it; the ability is there, but she will improve with this run.” “Whereas, Betting Sensation has the benefit of two good, hard runs back.” Darin is closing in on a victory after top-four placings in all of his starts to date. Another honest effort is expected from the pacer in race 4. “He always goes a good race; he is a bit of a lazy little bugger,” Green said. “He’s hard to drive, but come race day, he puts his best foot forward.” Frosty Girl looks another big hope for the Green stable. The trotter ran on strongly for third in her last start at Winton after being held up at a crucial stage. “She was really unlucky at Winton; I stayed three back on the markers, and she had two of the favourites in front of her.” “I was expecting them to kick on a bit better, but she ended up being held up behind them.” “She got to the line really good after; she’s pretty close to knocking one off.” Sally Lindenny faces a step up in class when she starts in race 8. Green hopes a better getaway will help her cause. “She trotted home super last start.” “It is a tough ask against Jimmy Carter and some of those better horses.” “But she is going really well.” “I am hoping I can step her a bit better this time; I didn’t step her very well the other day, and we were slow away.” Green has both Wattlebank Arnie and He’s A Meister in Sunday’s fast-class pace. Both come into the race following excellent last-start efforts, and they are closely matched in an even field. “Wattlebank Arnie is more of a speed horse, but I don’t think there is much between them at all.” “He’s A Meister can do anything recently; he can sit out there and work, and he can run home too.” “It is a very even race, and you could make a case for any of them.” View the full article
  4. All five of the 'Future Stars Friday' winners at Santa Anita appeared to emerge from the efforts unscathed, with connections looking forward to their Classics campaigns in 2024. The very domination of the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light) will likely have put the colt at the head of the class for champion 2-year-old honors, and the Repole Stable homebred looked good Saturday morning. “We were extremely happy with the way Fierceness ran,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “The race kind of unfolded the way we envisioned it would. We wanted to get involved and get to the first turn in good position, which he was able to do. Just a powerful performance.” 'Rising Star' Locked (Gun Runner) looked to be going nowhere at short odds on the Juvenile, but got going late to finish a respectable third. “Locked got shuffled back a little more than we wanted and then got stuck inside,” Pletcher said. “There was a lot of kickback. I thought once he kind of got into the clear down the lane he started closing pretty well. At that point, the race had kind of gotten away from him. He was a couple strides away from being second, but he just had too much to do at that point.” Pletcher said both colts will return first to Churchill Downs before shipping to the trainer's South Florida base at Palm Beach Downs to chart a course towards the new year. There will be no such gray area where it comes to the Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly after George Krikorian's Just F Y I (Justify) stamped her authority on her race Friday, lowering the colors of the previously undefeated divisional front-runner 'TDN Rising Star' Tamara (Bolt d'Oro). If he wasn't totally surprised that his filly proved best, he was slightly taken aback with the way she did it. “She actually showed a bit more early speed than I expected,” Mott said. “She put herself right up there, which was great.” The connections of Tamara confirmed that she emerged with a 'small knot' and the back of her rear hind. “We'll take a look at it and see what it is,” said trainer Richard Mandella. “That will determine whether we may need to give her a rest. I could see at the half-mile pole that she wasn't running her race. I thought Mike (Smith) would have a tight hold on her.” Chad Brown said that Hard to Justify, who gave her sensational young stallion a second straight Breeders' Cup winner on Friday in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, would get a rest with an eye on her sophomore season. European horses unsurprisingly made their presence felt in the afternoon's other grass races. Big Evs (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) gave her sire, trainer Mick Appleby and jockey Tom Marquand their first Breeders' Cup winner with their first starter. “It hasn't sunk in yet, it really is a dream come true,” trainer Michael Appleby said. “I'm still pinching myself. It was the best day of my career and I'm just so proud of all my team at home, Tom Marquand and Big Evs's owners Rachael and Paul Teasdale.” Trainer Aidan O'Brien was dealt a disappointing blow when River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was withdrawn from the Juvenile Turf Friday morning, but the team was mollified some when Unquestionable (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) validated favoritism in the final Breeders' Cup event of the day. “It's very tough to win here, but I'm delighted for the lads as they put so much into it,” O'Brien said. “It's hard to explain because when things start bad like what happened with River Tiber as it usually goes down because there are a lot of areas you can't control.” The post Breeders’ Cup Friday Aftermath appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 8. GOODNIGHT OLIVE (m, 5, Ghostzapper–Salty Strike, by Smart Strike) joined an elite group of Breeders' Cup repeaters with a thoroughly dominating performance in defense of her title in the GI Filly and Mare Turf at Santa Anita Saturday. The 11-10 chalk was away alertly from the inside gate and raced in the second flight of horses, just to the inside of Yuugiri (Shackleford) and a few lengths behind the pacesetting Eda (Munnings), blinkered for the first time, and Society (Gun Runner). Committed to an inside run on the turn, the 5-year-old angled out sharply into the three path at the five-sixteenths and had the leaders in the crosshairs at the quarter pole. Sweeping by three deep into the lane, Goodnight Olive was given a few needless left-handers by Irad Ortiz, Jr. in the final eighth of a mile, but the race was well in hand by that point. Yuugiri plugged on to be a game second ahead of Three Witches (Into Mischief) in third. Goodnight Olive is one of two individual Breeders' Cup winners for Ghostzapper, whose daughter Judy the Beauty won this race back in 2014. Goodnight Olive is cataloged to sell as hip 237 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale this coming Tuesday. Sales history: $170,000 Ylg '19 FTKOCT. SIERRA LEONE (c, 2, Gun Runner–Heavenly Love, by Malibu Moon) proved he still has a lot to learn but still showed enough ability in the end to graduate at first asking and become the latest 'TDN Rising Star' for Three Chimney's stallion Gun Runner. Coming from behind, the 3-1 shot had to come wide into the stretch and showed his inexperience inside the furlong marker but straightened out under jockey Manny Franco to sweep past the leading pair and win going away. 14. Cheveley Park Stud homebred INSPIRAL (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Starscope {GB}, by Selkirk) became the first Breeders' Cup winner for her Juddmonte sire with a narrow victory over dual Group 1 winner Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the GI Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Saturday for trainers John and Thady Gosden. The final time over the Santa Anita firm turf was 1:59.06 for the 1 1/4 miles. One of the backmarkers crossing the dirt, the 5-2 favorite found plenty of friendly cover in midfield in the master hands of Frankie Dettori. Glued to the rail into the clubhouse turn behind a half-mile in :46.90 as In Italian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) showed the way, the filly was in a good rhythm on the backstretch. Creeping closer on the far turn, Dettori shook his filly up at the quarter pole and she produced a killer burst of speed as the gaps arrived in the lane to win from out of the clouds. Inspiral just pipped Warm Heart in the final two jumps to take it by a neck. Moira (Ghostzapper) just nosed out G1 Hong Kong Vase heroine Win Marilyn (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) for third. Already a five-time Group 1 winner, the filly had been due to run on QIPCO British Champions Day last month, but the heavy ground put paid to that plan. 16. The fairy tale got its happily-ever-after ending. Cody's Wish (Curlin–Dance Card, by Tapit) made it back-to-back GI Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile wins in a dramatic running of the first World Championships race Saturday. Cody's Wish had captured the heart of the racing world last year for his connection with Cody Dorman, a boy suffering from Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome. After training exceptionally all week, Cody's Wish got squeezed at the break from both sides in the Dirt Mile and was relegated to the rear of the field. GI Preakness S. winner National Treasure (Quality Road) went straight to the lead through early fractions of :22.51 and :46.02, as last-out GII Charles Town Classic winner Skippylongstocking (Exaggerator) stalked from second. Cody's Wish sat far back before unleashing a monster move. He split horses, dipped inside Skippylongstocking, and set his sights on National Treasure. The two battled down the length of the stretch and bumped repeatedly. The Godolphin homebred got there by a nose but had to endure a long inquiry as stewards reviewed the contact. Final time for the race was 1:35.97. Skippylongstocking held third. Trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado also teamed up Friday with Just FYI (Justify) to win the GI NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The race was Cody's Wish's swan song, as he will be retired to Godolphin's Jonabell Farm near Lexington. Lifetime record: 16-11-1-4. B/O-Godolphin LLC; T-Bill Mott; J-Junior Alvarado. 17. Making his graded-stakes debut as a 7-1 gamble in Saturday's GII Twilight Derby, SEAL TEAM (GB) (c, 3, War Front–Mrs McDougal, by Medaglia d'Oro) sliced his way through traffic in upper stretch and charged home full of run to take the nine-furlong test in a bunched finish. Away alertly–almost too alertly–for Umberto Rispoli, the homebred raced a touch keen through the early exchanged, but eventually coalesced and was taken back to sit a midfield and ground-saving trip into the turn and backstretch. Between rivals into the final half-mile, he responded when set down leaving the quarter pole, and he aggressively took a gap between Godolphin's Silver Knott (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), racing as a first-time gelding, and the tiring Mondgeo (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and sprinted home to score a narrow decision over Silver Knott. Favored Webslinger (Constitution) lingered at the back of the pack early on and Javier Castellano was left with no choice but to circle rivals perhaps as many as eight wide on the swing for home. Despite the significant ground loss, he flashed home gamely to just miss. O-Ramona & Perry Bass; B-Bass Stables LLC; T-Richard Mandella. 23. Al Shaqab Racing's Orne (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}–Pellucid {GB}, by Excelebration {Ire}) followed up a Sept. 22 debut success at Kempton with a fourth over one mile in last month's G3 Autumn S. and regained the winning thread with a pillar-to-post victory in Saturday's rescheduled G3 Betfred Horris Hill S. at Newmarket. The 10-1 chance was swiftly into stride and tanked along on the front end through halfway. Nudged along passing the quarter-mile marker, he came under sterner urging approaching the final furlong and, despite drifting left in the closing stages, was driven out to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths from Witness Stand (GB) (Expert Eye {GB}). “It wasn't the plan to make the running as I wanted to drop in, get a lead and get there late,” revealed rider Rab Havlin. “He was last in [the stalls] and first out, but normally he doesn't do a stroke when he is in front. I went on a fresh bit of ground and he found a rhythm. Towards the finish he got a little bit lonely and ducked left, but he has done it well in the end. He travelled good and handled the ground [behind Ancient Wisdom] in the Autumn S. [last time], but just didn't stay and he could get quicker over the winter. It is nice to get another Group winner on the board before the end of the season as I was running out of time.” Pedigree Notes Orne, full-brother to a gelded yearling and a weanling filly, is the second of four foals and lone winner produced by G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. third Pellucid (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}). The February-foaled bay's dam is a half-sister to G2 Solonaway S. and G3 Jersey S. victor Space Traveller (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), who also hit the board in the GI Woodbine Mile, GI Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational and GI Frank E Kilroe Mile. Orne's third dam Snow Crystal (Ire) (Kingmambo) is kin to five stakes performers, namely G1 Fillies' Mile heroine Crystal Music (Nureyev), G1 Irish Derby third Tchaikovsky (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), the dual Group 1-placed G3 Lancashire Oaks victrix State Crystal (Ire) (High Estate {Ire}), G3 John Porter S. victor Dubai Success (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and G3 May Hill S. winner and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac third Solar Crystal (Ire) (Alzao). Solar Crystal, in turn, is the dam of G1 Racing Post Trophy placegetter Feared In Flight (Ire) (Hawk Wing). 24. Susumu Fujita's Shin Emperor (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), the full-brother to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Sottsass (Fr) and €2.1-million topper at the 2022 Arqana August sale, made a successful racecourse debut Saturday, bursting through with 400 metres to travel en route to a three-length success at Tokyo Racecourse. Trying an 1800-metre trip for this first go, the son of Starlet's Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was first to break the line and could have led had they chosen, but Takeshi Yokoyama elected to allow the colt to find his feed and settled in a handy fourth behind a steady tempo for the long run down the back straight. Patiently handled on the circle just behind the speed, Shin Emperor traveled strongly and had to be pulled off heels with the real running about to begin, but he split rivals decisively and sprinted his final 600 metres in a strong :33.8 for an easy victory as the $4 (3-1) second favourite. “He was stronger than I imagined, and I thought he was a good horse from the start,” said Yokoyama. “He's still a kid and he's still a challenge, but he's a horse I'm looking forward to.” Added winning trainer Yoshito Yahagi: “I'm relieved to see such a performance from a new horse with such a deep pedigree.” While not specifying any future targets, Shin Emperor would certainly be on a trajectory towards the 2024 Japanese Classics, which begin with the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) in April. There are two top-level opportunities for 2-year-old males in December in Japan, the Asahi Hai Futurity over a mile and the Hopeful S. going 2000 metres.
