  1. Romantic Warrior has drawn barrier seven in the 2023 Cox Plate. (Photo: George Sal/Racing Photos) The 2023 Cox Plate (2040m) has attracted a field of 12 runners vying for Australasia’s weight-for-age championship at Moonee Valley on Saturday afternoon. Hong Kong superstar Romantic Warrior is set to jump from barrier seven as favourite with horse racing betting sites in Saturday’s $5 million feature. James McDonald will stick on board the market elect, with Romantic Warrior seemingly taking great improvement from his run in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) when finishing fourth. Reigning Melbourne Cup (3200m) champion Gold Trip will back up from finishing third in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup (2400m) and jump from barrier eight in the Cox Plate. Having partnered Without A Fight to victory in the Caulfield Cup, Mark Zahra will hop back on board Gold Trip and look to add a third Group 1 to the horse’s already glittering record. Northern Hemisphere three-year-old Victoria Road will make his Australian debut on Saturday for trainer Joseph O’Brien, with Blake Shinn taking the ride from barrier six. Alligator Blood (5) and Mr Brightside (2) have drawn perfectly for their respective racing styles and are back to right the wrongs of last year’s Cox Plate, where the pair both ran below market expectations. Fresh off her win in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m), Fangirl is one of two mares in the race and will be partnered by Hong Kong-based hoop Zac Purton. King Colorado (10) and Militarize (3) come in as the only three-year-olds (Southern Hemisphere) in the race, with in-form jockeys Michael Dee and Zac Lloyd both getting down to 49.5kg for Saturday’s race. Zaaki, My Oberon, Pinstriped and Duais round out a stacked field for the 2023 Cox Plate, which is race nine on Saturday’s card at Moonee Valley. 2. Trainer Danica Guy’s sights have now been set towards Ellerslie in January with her exciting three-year-old Lupo Solitario (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) after his unbeaten run came to an end at Te Rapa last Saturday. The son of Satono Aladdin ran home well to finish runner-up behind Crocetti (NZ) (Zacinto) in the Gr.2 James And Annie Sarten Memorial (1400m), and while pleased with the run, Guy was left frustrated by the lack of tempo in the race. “Crocetti got quite a soft time of it and we probably would have liked to have seen a little bit more pressure put on him through the race and we may have seen a different result,” Guy said. “It came down to tactics, unfortunately we were in the one-one so we weren’t the one able to apply pressure and the one that was outside didn’t apply the pressure. “But I am very happy with our horse, he ran a huge race.” Lupo Solitario, who won his two previous outings, will now head for a freshen-up before being set for the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie in January, with the Gr.3 Mitchell Family Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m) at Pukekohe on December 9 his next target. “He has come through the run really well,” Guy said. “He has two weeks in the paddock now and then we will bring him back for racing in December. “At this stage we are looking at the Bonecrusher and perhaps either Boxing Day or New Year’s Day, and then into the Karaka Million from there.” View the full article
  3. The late owners Bob and Beverly Lewis, universally beloved in the industry and honored with the Eclipse Award of Merit in 1997, got their third and final Breeders' Cup win with Folklore, made all the more special as she was a homebred. Although they used a variety of trainers, all three of their of their Breeders' Cup wins were with D. Wayne Lukas. “We partnered with WinStar on Tiznow and Folklore was in his first crop,” said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Farm, where Folklore was raised. “She was bred by Bob and Beverly Lewis. At the time, they used several different trainers and Wayne Lukas was one of them. Folklore was kind of slated to go to the sale. We had others for them that were by more high-profile sires at the time, higher-bred yearlings. Lukas was told he could pick one. He locked on her right away. He didn't even look at the pedigree, didn't care who she was by or what her family was. He wanted her and he just knew. And of course she turned into a Breeders' Cup winner and a champion. She really kicked off Tiznow's stallion career, him being such a special horse in Breeders' Cup lore, then to get her in his first crop. I give Lukas a lot of credit. He was right.” Folklore, now 20 and still owned by a branch of the Lewis family, has a yearling filly by Practical Joke, a weanling filly by Yaupon, and was bred to Mo Donegal for 2024. Her first daughter is the dam of multiple Japanese champion and Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Folklore (2003 bay mare, Tiznow–Contrive, by Storm Cat) Lifetime record: Ch. 2yo filly, MGISW, 8-4-3-1, $945,500 Breeders' Cup connections: B/O-Robert Lewis & Beverly Lewis (KY); T-D. Wayne Lukas; J-Edgar Prado. Current location: Taylor Made Farm, Nicholasville, Ky. 5. Humbucker will kick-off his spring campaign at Gore on Wednesday. Photo: Monica Toretto Consistent galloper Humbucker will step out on his home track at Gore on Wednesday in the first step towards a start in the Group 3 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) at Riccarton on November 15. It will be the seven-year-old’s first race since April, with trainer Ellis Winsloe frustrated by a lack of trials and raceday opportunities that has prevented him in getting some valuable miles under the gelding’s belt until now. “There just hasn’t been any suitable races for him down here and it is too far to travel up to Riccarton and the like just to kick him off,” Winsloe said. “We don’t want to cart him around just for the sake of it, so he has been working here at home and hopefully that will be enough for Wednesday. “I’m not sure what to expect but he handles all track conditions and once he strikes form he maintains it. “The track at present is perfect, so if we don’t get any rain before the day, I think it will exactly what we are looking for. “As long as he shows us enough we will most likely go to Wingatui with him next and then on to the Coupland’s at Riccarton. “He ran fourth in the race last year and it would be nice to think he can go a few places better this year.” Winsloe also has maiden galloper Mi Jadore in the fifth event at Gore where she requires a scratching to make the field off the ballot. “Mi Jadore is in the same boat as Humbucker in that we haven’t been able to get a start for her either, so I’m hoping she gets a scratching so we can this prep underway,” he said. Winsloe does have a mission at Riccarton this Saturday with Group 3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) contender Taramea Lad set to continue his preparation for the time-honoured event in the Listed Sothys Spring Classic (2000m). “Taramea Lad has been working well since his last start win at Riccarton and we are heading back there again on the weekend,” Winsloe said. “I am keen to get him on a firm track as that is what he is likely to strike there for the New Zealand Cup. “He is unproven on good ground, but I firmly believe he will handle it with no issues. “If he shows he is up to it then we are thinking about the Metropolitan (Listed, 2600m) on the first day, on the 11th (of November) and then into the Cup, but that will be dictated by the track conditions on offer.” More racing news View the full article
  6. Te Akau Racing co-trainer Sam Bergerson. Photo: Trish Dunell Promising three-year-old Talisker took the next step on his path to the Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) next month with a convincing victory at Ashburton on Sunday. Taken to the front by rider Sam Weatherley, the son of 2017 2000 Guineas winner Embellish, gave none of his age group rivals a look in as he maintained a powerful gallop on the tricky Heavy8 surface to win the Wide Span Sheds (1300m) by a comfortable length and a quarter margin. The win was the third in a row for the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained galloper who has thrived since being sent South to commence his build-up towards the Riccarton blue-riband feature on November 11. “He is in a really good vein of form and is thriving at present,” Bergerson said. “We haven’t given him a conventional 2000 Guineas prep, rather we wanted to see him get some wins on the board and get his confidence up. “He still does a bit wrong and Sam said he didn’t really handle the track, which was pretty testing, but he was classy enough to get through it.” Bergerson is keen to provide his charge with his chance in the 2000 Guineas, where he is rated a $12 prospect with online betting sites behind hot favourite Crocetti ($1.60). “Crocetti is definitely the benchmark for the Guineas, but we think our guy deserves his chance,” he said. “He has the advantage that he is down there and acclimatised well whereas the others still have to cope with the travel. “He loves to run handy which is an asset and if he could draw a barrier then he should be in the mix.” Purchased by Te Akau Racing boss David Ellis for $70,000 from the Karaka Book 1 Sale draft of Lansdowne Park, Talisker has now won three of his seven starts for the Te Akau Classic Edition Racing Partnership. Bergerson also said that excitement was building at the stable as they counted down to star mare Imperatriz tackling the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at The Valley on Saturday. “Mark (Walker) is over there at the moment and said she (Imperatriz) is just flying,” he said. “She will have a workout at The Valley on Tuesday morning and that should have her spot on for the weekend. “The stable is really fizzing about how she is doing over there, and I know Opie (Bosson) is just itching to get over there and ride her this weekend, so hopefully it’s going to be a super day for everyone.” More racing news View the full article
  7. It was a tale of two Breeders' Cup preps Monday morning at Santa Anita for Arabian Knight (Uncle Mo) and White Abarrio (Race Day), the former putting in an eye-catching six furlong work in 1:11.54 and then galloping out a mile in 1:37.57 without any pressing encouragement, as reported by the DRF in the Breeders' Cup Clocker Report, and the latter having it tentatively postponed until Wednesday. When asked for a reason, conditioner Rick Dutrow only said: “We weren't able to work [White Abarrio] this morning. Hopefully we'll get to gallop him tomorrow [horses are not permitted to work at Santa Anita on Tuesdays] and work him Wednesday.” Bob Baffert was thrilled with the work from the GI Pacific Classic winner–who many believe will ultimately be the post-time favorite in the Classic–and likes the changes he's seeing: “I was really happy with the work and the way he has been progressing since the Haskell, which was kind of a disaster all around. He just seems to be progressing and continuing to get better with maturity. We've still got another couple of weeks to go, but I couldn't be any happier with the way he's coming into the race at the moment.” The post Classic Contenders Arabian Knight, White Abarrio Headline Breeders’ Cup Works appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 11. By Jonny Turner Cool, calm, and collected is the only way to describe Olivia Thornley’s winning drive behind superstar pacer Akuta in the Ashburton Flying Stakes at Ashburton on Monday. Thornley set up the first leg of a winning double for the late Ian Dobson and his family as Akuta strode to an easy win just a matter of minutes before Muscle Mountain took out the Ashburton Trotters Flying Mile. Pulling on Ian ‘Dobbie’ Dobson’s green colours to drive the New Zealand Cup favorite put all eyes firmly on Thornley in the New Zealand Cup’s most important race. And she took it all in her stride, while honouring Dobson in the process. “It meant a lot to get the win, especially with the passing of ‘Dobbie’,” Thornley said. In a straggly old start to the Ashburton Flying Stakes, Akuta was safely into stride but left well back in the field. “Going into the race all that mattered was I stepped – it didn’t matter how fast or slow,” Thornley said. “So long as I took off pacing, I would be happy.” Thornley moved up to sit parked before any serious pace went into the race, and from there, her four-year-old delivered a first-over crush. “The horsepower he has, you can put him anywhere in a race, and he just relaxes, and when you ask him to go, he just keeps trying,” the reinswoman said. Thornley was thrust into the spotlight this week following the suspension of Mark Purdon and unavailability of Natalie Rasmussen. Purdon, along with son and training partner Nathan, put their trust in Thornley on Monday, and she repaid that faith with a calculated drive. “It is amazing, I am so grateful to them for putting me on.” “I am just rapt to be able to repay the faith.” Dobson’s colours were back in the winner’s circle just two races later when Muscle Mountain powered to victory in the green Cullen Racing silks. Driver Ben Hope saluted as Muscle Mountain powered away from his rivals to win by a huge six-length margin. Like Thornley, Hope was wearing a black armband in honour of Dobson. “I’m not one to do a salute, but I’m incredibly honoured to be driving this horse, and a huge part of that is to Ian, and that salute was for him.” Muscle Mountain was surprisingly beaten in his last start in the Canterbury Park Trotting Cup. The classy trotter showed he was right back on track with his emphatic win on Monday. “There’s a few doubters out there, but we know we’re going to have him tip-top on Dominion day, and today I just wanted to prove to people that he still has to be respected.” There were plenty more outstanding performances on Monday’s huge afternoon of harness racing at Ashburton. Cold Chisel and Aardiebytheseaside ran to excellent Sires Stakes heat wins, while Aardies Express and Sooner The Bettor were also big winners. View the full article

  13. The action revolved around Coolmore's 17-strong draft on day one of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale where the Aidan O'Brien-trained Carracci (Quality Road) was sold to continue his career in Saudi Arabia for 320,000gns Carracci boasted one of the most attractive profiles on offer at Tattersalls on Monday and the market agreed. Placed in a Group 3 earlier this season, Carracci was last seen finishing a respectable fourth in a listed contest at Dundalk in September. He boasts a rating of 101 and was described by Aidan 'Mouse' O'Ryan as his pick of the sale after the bloodstock agent signed for the top lot of the opening session on behalf of Saudi interests. O'Ryan said, “He has been bought for SBS Global and he goes to Saudi Arabia. He is my pick of the sale, I love the sire and he speaks for himself. This horse's form is good, and we were keen to get him. He should be one for the big races in Saudi in the spring.” As well as making the frame in the G3 Irish 2,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown earlier this season, Carracci also won at two, when beating stablemate Farnborough (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a back-end maiden at Dundalk. Incidentally, Farnborough, who bolted up off 86 at Leopardstown on Sunday, went through the ring less than 24 hours later and sold to Hubie de Burgh and Darby Racing for 75,000gns. Listed winner Salt Lake City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) also formed part of the strong Coolmore draft when selling to Australian interests Domeland for 100,000gns. All told, Coolmore sold 17 horses to the tune of 834,000gns. At close of play on Monday, the aggregate stood at 6,273,500gns, which represented a 27% drop on last year's corresponding session. The median was the same at 16,000gns while the average fell 18% to 26,810gns and the clearance rate by 5% to 84%. Inquisitively's Owner Returns To The European Market For Wootton Bassett Colt Fresh from a breakthrough Group 3 success with Cornwallis S. winner Inquisitively (GB) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}), Hong Kong-based businessman and owner Sean Wee Gan returned to the European market for promising Wootton Bassett (GB) colt Rascal Recknell (Fr) at 215,000gns. The owner, who has enjoyed plenty of success locally in Hong Kong with European imports, notably First Responder (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}), was buying through agent Sam Wright and trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy. It was Wright who sourced Inquisitively on behalf of Sean Wee Gan. The agent has close ties with Philippart de Foy, given the pair worked together at Christophe Clement's almost a decade ago. The trainer explained, “The plan is the same-keep him in the UK for a bit and then send him to Hong Kong. This horse is a nice big type, he looks a decent prospect. We might run him once this year, but the plan is to give him as much time as he needs.” Philippart de Foy added, “He has a big frame and plenty of scope. I am surprised he ran in August, but he showed plenty of ability that day. He will hopefully run a couple of times next year and then head to Hong Kong next summer.” Well-Bred Lope De Vega Filly Joins Paddy Twomey The well-bred Firebird (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who finished second on her only start at Ayr this month in the colours of the late Sir Robert Ogden, will continue her career for Irish maestro Paddy Twomey. Twomey secured Firebird for 260,000gns through agent Matt Coleman, who explained that the juvenile will be targeted at black-type races next season. He said, “She goes to Paddy Twomey. We know the filly well as I looked after the late Sir Robert and Lady Ogden's horses. The filly is a good-looking sort by Lope De Vega, has always shown plenty in training, put in a promising race on her debut and, fingers crossed, she can go on to get some black-type next year.” Firebird's half-sister Balalaika (Ire) (No Nay Never) made a pretty penny at Park Paddocks last year. She was snapped up by BBA Ireland for 330,000gns after finishing third in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot. Both fillies were trained by Rebecca Menzies. Coleman continued, “All of the mare's runners have achieved high ratings and this year's Too Darn Hot yearling made 110,000gns. Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}), under the second dam, finished second in the Irish Oaks in July, and was a neck second to Poptronic in the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes on Saturday. It is a happening family.” Australian Buyers Land A Blow It wouldn't be a horses-in-training sale at Tattersalls without the Australian buyers and Will Bourne, head of bloodstock for Ciaron Maher, got in on the action early when going to 140,000gns for the Jamie Railton-drafted Kings Valley (Ire) (Territories {Ire}). Kings Valley ran four times–and placed twice–in Britain for trainer Ollie Sangster, who sourced the colt for 65,000gns at Book 3 here last year. Bourne said, “The plan is to send him to Harry Eustace for now and then ship him straight off to Australia. He has run some really good races, he has been unlucky, he is still a maiden but he is a lightly raced two-year-old. “He is very athletic, sound, clean-limbed, has good feet, and he ticks a lot of boxes for Ciaran. We spoke to Ciaran and videoed the horse for him and he was very keen on this horse.” Triumph Candidate? Mullins Lands 100k Night Moon For Juvenile Hurdling Willie Mullins and Harold Kirk played a major role at the horses-in-training sale here in July when snapping up Ethical Diamond (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}) for 320,000gns and the pair were responsible for the first six-figure lot on Monday when snapping up Night Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) for 100,000gns. Trained by David Marnane, Night Moon earned a 14lb hike when bolting up off a mark of 60 at Listowel last month and will continue his career for Ireland's dominant jumps trainer. The sale represented a good return for Marnane and owners MRC International, who sourced the horse through the trainer's brother Con for €50,000 at the BBAG September Yearling Sale in 2021. Marnane and MRC will offer the classy 93-rated sprinter Lady Tilbury (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) at the December Mares Sale from the same batch of yearling recruited in 2021. Explaining the concept, Marnane said, “We put the ownership group together in 2021 with the idea of buying some yearlings and we'd like to wish Harold Kirk and Willie Mullins the best of luck with Night Moon. It's a great result for the syndicate and we look forward to offering Lady Tilbury here in December.” Marnane continued, “We bought another batch of yearlings on behalf of the syndicate–upwards of 20–and are always open to new investors. The syndicate has enjoyed a lot of success in a short space of time and we have Jakajaro (Ire) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) to look forward to from last year's yearling crop. He is a smart colt going forward and should provide everyone with a lot of fun next season.” Nicholls And Malone To The Fore For Golden Horn Gelding The jumps boys were out in force on Monday and Tom Malone, buying on behalf of Paul Nicholls, snapped up proven soft-ground performer Golden Move (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}) for 215,000gns. The sale came off the back of a strong weekend for the sire. Not only did Golden Horn supply the winner of the G2 Long Distance Cup at Ascot through Trawlerman (Ire), but Cais Chorister (Fr) also landed a Group 3 in France. Golden Move, a winner over 1m4f on soft ground, was bought on spec by Malone. Speaking after the sale, he said, “He is a lovely animal, he looks like he stays, needs all of the trip he is running over at the minute, he goes on soft ground, is by Golden Horn, who is doing so well, and is the one we wanted today. He goes to Ditcheat and is for sale.” Buy Of The Day Gordon Elliott made his mark in the training ranks with bargain buys and it was Silver Birch, the horse he sourced from Paul Nicholls for £20,000, who put him on the map when landing the 2007 Grand National. While he may be more associated with signing for six-figure point-to-pointers in recent times, Elliott proved that he still has an eye for a bargain by snapping a sister to his own classy hurdler Pied Piper (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) for just 10,000gns. Without being privy to how Barrier (Fr) (Australia {GB}) vetted, it's hard to see an outcome where Elliott, along with agent and close friend Mouse O'Ryan, didn't find value here. Lest we forget, Pied Piper is an extremely talented dual purpose horse who boasts an official hurdles rating of 157 and was only narrowly touched off in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket earlier this month. He should also be a Cheltenham festival winner given Davy Russell was walking wounded when going down by just a head aboard the five-year-old in this year's County Hurdle. There is so much more to come from Pied Piper this season and, given Constitution Hill is likely to frighten off plenty of challengers in the two-mile hurdling division, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he could sneak a place in next year's Champion Hurdle. Regardless of what more Pied Piper can achieve, the fact remains that his little sister will retain some residual value as a broodmare being a half to a black-type hurdler while few would bet against her making her own mark in that division for Elliott. Thought for the day Trade wasn't exactly straightforward on Monday, which was represented in the figures, but much better can be expected on Tuesday with a strong selection of horses due into the ring on day two. 15. Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners is proud to use the label #EclipseFillies to commemorate the long list of Grade I-winning fillies they have campaigned over the years, but one outstanding racehorse that will soon depart from their racing stable stands out above the rest. Campaigned in partnership with Repole Stable and Michael House, reigning champion sophomore filly and three time Grade I winner Nest (Curlin – Marion Ravenwood, by A. P. Indy) took Eclipse President and Founder Aron Wellman and the rest of her connections on a journey they will not soon forget. “There is no question that Nest has taken the queen's position at the top of the Eclipse fillies ranks,” Wellman said. “She breathes different air. The ride she has taken Eclipse and our partners, the Repole and House family, on has been nothing short of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we've all really cherished.” Nest will be a standout for Fasig-Tipton, too, when she goes through the ring in a few weeks at the Night of the Stars sale. “We've had the opportunity to offer some amazing broodmares and broodmare prospects in the last decade or so, from Havre de Grace to Songbird to Gamine and so forth, and this year we have another special offering in Nest,” said Fasig-Tipton's Boyd Browning. “She ranks right up there as one of the finest offerings we've had the privilege to present to the marketplace. She's like poetry in motion, watching her run. Anyone that has ever watched a horse race knows just how special she is.” Purchased for $350,000, Nest was a yearling that Todd Pletcher just kept coming back to when he was going over his short list with the Repole team. “Physically, she was a medium-sized filly,” Pletcher recalled of the bay bred by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables. “Very good conformation with a great neck, head and shoulder, but what really stood out to me about her was her walk. If I were talking to someone saying, 'Hey, what does a horse that walks really well look like?' she would have been a terrific example.” By Curlin and out of stakes-winning daughter of A.P. Indy, Nest was always expected to get better with age and distance. So when she came flying out of the gates as a juvenile to win by five lengths on debut and then claim the GII Demoiselle S., Wellman said her precocity was an unexpected bonus. “To be a graded stakes winner at two as a daughter of Curlin with her pedigree, we felt like we were going into her 3-year-old season with some pretty heavy artillery,” he said. Nest exceeded any expectations set before her last year as a sophomore as she reeled off five stakes victories, including three Grade I wins, and was named champion 3-year-old filly. While she came just short of a Kentucky Oaks win–having come off an eight-length victory in the GI Ashland S. and settling for second behind Secret Oath (Arrogate)–her next start was one that her connections believe might be her most underrated performance. Nest delivers an eye-popping performance in the 2022 GI Ashland S. | Coady Although they initially planned on giving the filly some spacing before her next race following the Oaks, Nest flourished so well coming out of the race that they decided to go up against colts in the GI Belmont S. Despite stumbling at the start, she overcame a difficult trip to finish second behind stablemate Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo). “Jose Ortiz had to really use her going into the first turn to get position, and then all the way up the backside and around the far turn she was really hemmed in behind big, burly colts,” Wellman explained. “When she did finally get clear in the stretch, it was just a little bit too late, but she leveled off like you don't see horses do. It was an extraordinary performance even in defeat.” “What really impressed me was how she came out of the Belmont,” added Pletcher. “We've run quite a few horses in the Belmont over the years and I don't think I've ever had a horse run really well in the Belmont and then just thrive afterwards. She bounced out of the race really quickly and it set her up for two big performances at Saratoga.” Nest's victories in the GI Coaching Club America Oaks, which she won by over 12 lengths and earned a career-high 104 Beyer Speed Figure, was followed up with another dominating Grade I score in the Alabama. Nest gets a third Grade I score in the Alabama | Sarah Andrew “It gives me chills to think about those moments,” Wellman said. “I was able to sit back and appreciate just how incredible of a filly she was and what she was doing for the business in gaining so many fans and what she was doing for my family, the Repole family, the House family, and of course all the Eclipse partners that are so privileged to be associated with her.” “She displayed an ability you don't see very often of being able to really quicken and finish on the dirt,” explained Pletcher. “She has a high cruising speed, but it's not very often that you see any horse be able to accelerate on the dirt like she has been able to.” This year, Nest's 4-year-old campaign was delayed due to an early setback from a fever and it was recently announced that she will miss the upcoming GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, but her connections still celebrated a productive season with a win in the GII Shuvee S. and yet another Grade I placing in the Personal Ensign. The chapter of her career with Eclipse will come to a close when the 4-year-old sells on Nov. 7 at Fasig-Tipton, going through the ring with Highgate Sales as Hip 163. “Of course we would love to keep her ourselves, but the economics of the business do not allow for our operation to do that,” explained Wellman. “Emotions will be running high come the Night of the Stars, without question. It's such a privilege and honor, and it's so humbling, to know that Nest will be well represented and looked after there at the Newtown Paddocks at Fasig-Tipton. The eyes of the world will be on her that night and it will be an exclamation point on what has been a career on the racetrack of constant exclamation points.” Nest's siblings have helped boost her pedigree since she was purchased as a yearling three years ago. Her full-brother Idol won the 2021 GI Santa Anita H. and now stands at Taylor Made and her 3-year-old half-brother Lost Ark (Violence) just won the Jockey Club Derby Invitational S. in his last start on Oct. 7. “I think anyone interested in having one of the top, top fillies of her generation,” Pletcher responded when asked about who Nest might appeal to on the eve of her sale. “It's a remarkable pedigree and a terrific cross with Curlin over A.P. Indy. It has worked so well many times. If you're looking for a broodmare prospect, this is as good as it gets.” “When you look at Nest's potential as a broodmare, it's truly remarkable,” added Browning. “Not only is she by Curlin, who speaks for himself as a brilliant stallion, but you go through her pedigree and you've got the influence of Quiet American, Nureyev and A.P. Indy. The potential there is enormous and the possibilities are limitless. She's going to go to someone who is looking for the highest quality–a collector's item–to add to their broodmare band.” The post “A Collector’s Item,” Champion Nest Points to Fasig-Tipton November Sale appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 18. Crystal Ocean (GB), the top-rated horse in the world in 2019, now has a new accolade as the busiest stallion at stud in Britain and Ireland, according to the Return of Mares, which has been published by Weatherbys. The son of Sea The Stars (Ire), who stands for Coolmore's National Hunt division at The Beeches Stud in Co Waterford, covered 335 mares. Leading the Flat sires was Coolmore's Sioux Nation on 289. Frankel (GB), who is on his way to regaining his champion sire title in 2023, covered 196 mares at Banstead Manor Stud, including the dual Arc winner Treve (Fr) and Breeders' Cup heroines Audarya (Fr), Glass Slippers (GB) and Newspaperofrecord (GB). The dams of his Classic winners Adayar (Ire), Chaldean (GB), Nashwa (GB) and Homeless Songs (Ire) all paid return visits. The reigning champion sire Dubawi (Ire), now 21, covered 137 mares at Dalham Hall Stud. These included the Arc winner Alpinista (GB), Cabaret (Ire), the dam of St Mark's Basilica (Fr) and Magna Grecia (Ire), and Group 1-winning sisters Magical (Ire) and Rhododendron (Ire), the latter being the dam of Auguste Rodin (Ire). The returns to September 30, 2023 show that the number of foals born in Britain and Ireland this year rose slightly to 13,438 (from 13,275). Taken individually, there was a 4% rise in the number of foals in Ireland, to 9,082 (8,757 in 2022 and 8,638 in 2021), while the British foal crop contracted by 4% to 4,356 (4,518 in 2022 and 4,282 in 2021). The number of broodmares reported at stud in Britain and Ireland in 2023 is 22,600, down from 22,832 in 2022. Of these, 2,456 were not covered and there were 5,912 no returns, with 210 reported as barren. 19. Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), the brilliant winner of the 2022 Derby, has been euthanised at Newmarket Equine Hospital after failing to recover from an injury sustained on the gallops in August. “Everything was done to try to save him, we thought he was making progress but then he just started going backwards,” said Philip Robinson, assistant racing manager to owner Saeed Suhail. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Desert Crown was bred by Gary Robinson of Strawberry Fields Stud. He made just one appearance as a two-year-old to post a facile maiden victory at Nottingham and reappeared at three, the jungle drums banging loudly in the build-up to the G2 Dante S., which he won in imperious fashion to prompt him being backed into favouritism for the Derby. Similarly commanding at Epsom, he gave jockey Richard Kingscote his first Derby victory and his trainer a sixth success in the race since Shergar (GB) in 1981. Desert Crown was beaten for the first time in what transpired to be his final start of only a four-race career when second to Hukum (GB) in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. this spring. In preparation for an intended start in the G1 Juddmonte International he fractured his off-fore fetlock on Sunday, August 20 and was transported immediately to Newmarket Equine Hospital for surgery. He has remained there until the decision was taken for him to be humanely put down on Monday afternoon. Robinson added, “With a severe injury like that there is a lot of pressure with the weight of the animal standing on it, but we really thought he was going to get there and it's very sad he didn't make it. “You can try and help them with supports for the leg but at the end of the day they've got to be able to stand on their own. He had the best available treatment anywhere in the world, if he couldn't be saved here then he couldn't be saved anywhere. “He was a fantastic horse and his Derby win was an incredible day that we'll never forget.” James Savage, assistant trainer to Sir Michael Stoute, said, “He was a brilliant racehorse with an exceptional mind and we never really got to the bottom of him. We always thought that he was going to be a better horse with each race. To win a Derby on his third start was amazing in itself really. It's very sad. He could have reached the moon.” The post ‘Everything Was Done to Try To Save Him’: Derby Hero Desert Crown Euthanised appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 20. Christopher Head's two star three-year-olds of 2023, dual Classic winner Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) and Saturday's sensational Queen Elizabeth II S. winner Big Rock (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), will both remain in training for next season. Timeform has awarded Big Rock a rating of 129 for his six-length romp on QIPCO British Champions Day, which is the highest figure recorded by a miler in Europe this season. The winner of two Group 3 Classic trials in the spring, Big Rock was second to Ace Impact (Fr) in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and also finished runner-up in the G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin, behind Inspiral (GB) and Sauterne (Fr) respectively. Head told TDN on Monday, “He's come out the race perfectly well. It's crazy, a horse coming back from that kind of race and looking like he hasn't even raced.” He continued, “We would have gone to the Arc de Triomphe if he had won the Jockey Club because we wouldn't have known the limit of the distance for him. So in one way I am happy that things have gone this way because we know better about him for next season.” Both Big Rock and Blue Rose Cen race for their breeder Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals of Yeguada Centurion, who is also the breeder of their stable-mate Ramatuelle (Justify). The winner of the G2 Prix Robert Papin and G3 Prix du Bois, Ramatuelle was beaten only a short-neck by Vandeek (GB) in the G1 Prix Morny. She was sold as a yearling to Arthur Hoyeau for a syndicate which includes Ecurie des Monceaux and Tony Parker's Infinity Nine Horses. “It's the end of the season now for Big Rock, and for Blue Rose Cen and Ramatuelle, and they are all coming back next season,” Head confirmed. “It's wonderful. Leopoldo loves his racing and he loves his horses and he doesn't want the public to get bored, so he wants them to be running next season and for everyone to be able to follow them.” He added of Big Rock, “He was from Rock Of Gibraltar's last crop so it is wonderful to have him doing what he is in the same year that his sire has disappeared. And now he will be able to carry on the genes because he already has value as a stallion.” The post Big Rock and Blue Rose Cen to Race On Next Season appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 21. The Aga Khan's four-time Group 1 winner Tahiyra (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) has been retired following her third-placed finish in the Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot on Saturday. Trained by Dermot Weld, she was unbeaten at two, jumping straight from her maiden success to victory in the Moyglare Stud S. This season, she was beaten half a length by Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket before gaining her own Classic win in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and adding the Coronation S. and Matron S. to her tally of top-level victories. Tahiyra is the second Group 1 winner for the Cape Cross (Ire) mare Tarana (Ire), who is also the dam of Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal), the winner of nine of her 18 starts, including the Breeders' Cup Turf and Prix Vermeille. “We have been absolutely delighted with her and we have spoken about what we would do since she ran on Saturday,” said Pat Downes, manager of the Aga Khan's Irish Studs. “We just took a view that, unlike her sister Tarnawa, who didn't win her Group 1 until four, Tahiyra was obviously a champion two-year-old and a champion three-year-old and a very important filly for the future of the stud. “We felt we had done enough with her and she will move on now to the next stage. She's been an absolute star and she ran her heart out on Saturday. We have been delighted with her and she has been a tremendous filly for us.” The post Champion Filly Tahiyra Bows Out appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Completing a trio of well-related debutantes is Charlie Fellowes representative Mohave Dancer (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), who is a 300,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 daughter of G1 Queensland Oaks heroine Winning Ways (Aus) (Declaration Of War). Memento Vivere Racing's once-raced Rouge Sellier (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) posted a debut third over this trip at Haydock at the end of last month and hails from the stable of Sir Mark Prescott. The 260,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 acquisition is a three-parts sister to G1 Cheveley Park S. winner Lumiere (GB) (Shamardal) and GI E. P. Taylor S. victrix Sheikha Reika (Fr) (Shamardal). Another set to make the trip up the A11 from Newmarket is Michael Bell trainee Climate Action (GB) (Cracksman {GB}), who is a half-sister to three black-type performers out of a half-sister to five-time Group 1 winner and multiple Classic heroine User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}). She comes back off a runner-up finish, behind subsequent G1 Fillies' Mile seventh Seaward (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), in a one-mile test at Ascot last month. Climate Action's stakes-placed half-sister Madame Defarge (Ire) (Motivator {GB}) won this contest for the Bell yard in 2012. 24. The St Leger winner Continuous (Jpn), a son of the late Shadai stallion Heart's Cry (Jpn), is set to return to the land of his birth to take on Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) in the Japan Cup on November 26. Fifth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe after his Classic success, the colt missed Saturday's Champion S. with a raised temperature. “But he's back fine, he's back cantering again, so the plan with him is to go to the Japan Cup,” said trainer Aidan O'Brien on Racing TV. “We were delighted with his run in the Arc. Ryan [Moore] took his time, like he always does with him, and the pace just went a little bit slow in the middle of the race and that was the way it was, but he came home very well.” Moore is familiar with Tokyo racecourse and was aboard last year's Japan Cup winner Vela Azul (Jpn) (Eishin Flash {Jpn}) for trainer Kunihiko Watanabe. Continuous's sire ran in three consecutive Japan Cups and was beaten just a nose when second to the Luca Cumani-trained Alkaased in 2005. O'Brien added, “It's a race we've never won and you need a good horse to win it, so it would be great if we could be competitive in it. “It'll suit him all right, because he's a good traveller, he can handle fast and soft ground, it doesn't matter. He's got a great mind and he's got a lot of ability that horse – he's probably better than everyone thinks he is.” The post Continuous to Return ‘Home’ for Japan Cup appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 25. Patrice Cottier trainee Sparkling Plenty (Fr) (Kingman {GB}–Speralita {Fr}, by Frankel {GB}) notched a three-length debut success at Marseille-Borely earlier this month and swooped late over the same course and distance in Monday's Listed Prix Delahante to maintain her perfect record on black-type bow. She was steadied off the tempo and settled into a smooth rhythm racing sixth through halfway in the 8 1/2-furlong contest. Hurried along rounding the home turn, the 9-10 favourite made relentless headway under mild rousting in the straight and kept on strongly to usurp long-time leader Tiffanyli (Fr) (Lethal Force {Ire}) by a length nearing the line for a career high. Pedigree Notes Sparkling Plenty, the latest of three foals, is one of two scorers produced by an unraced half-sister to multiple elite-level heroine and US champion Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), herself the dam of three black-type winners headed by MG1SW dual Japanese champion Soul Stirring (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}). Descendants of Stacelita also include last term's G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) and G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) victrix Stars On Earth (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}). Sparkling Plenty's dam Speralita (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) is also a half-sister to the dam of last month's G1 Prix du Moulin victrix Sauterne (Fr) (Kingman {GB}). The April-foaled homebred bay is a full-sister to G3 Jersey S. victor and G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere runner-up Noble Truth (Fr).
