Maintaining the overseas stranglehold on the G1 Criterium International, Guy Pariente, Thomas Lines and Qatar Racing's Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}–Kensea {Fr}, by Kendargent {Fr}) struck for the David Menuisier stable at Saint-Cloud on Sunday. Putting the pressure on the leader Navy Seal (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) soon after the start, the 4-1 shot bagged the stand's-side fence after the home turn and used that to his advantage as the 4-5 favourite Alcantor (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) loomed on his outside. Engaged in battle with that rival approaching the final furlong, the G2 Champagne S. runner-up asserted in the last 50 metres to win by half a length, with the other Ballydoyle runner Portland (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) 1 3/4 lengths away in third. “He is improving and handles these [soft] conditions, but he's a beautiful mover and will be okay on faster ground as well,” jockey Oisin Murphy said of the winner, who was extending the dominance of foreign raiders in this mile contest since 2013 when Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}) was the last French-trained winner. Aidan O'Brien had experienced a famine of sorts since annexing 2010's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud with Recital (Fr) (Montjeu {Ire}), but he was back in the familiar surroundings of Saint-Cloud's winner's circle after Ballydoyle second string Los Angeles (Ire) (Camelot {GB}–Frequential {GB}, by Dansili {GB}) prevailed in a blanket finish in Sunday's latest renewal of the 10-furlong feature. The 67-10 chance found the necessary gears late on to register an ultimately impressive debut success tackling nine furlongs at Tipperary at the beginning of last month and was well away to track the leaders in fourth through halfway here. Sent wide to the stands' side rail off the home turn, he was bustled along to launch his challenge with 300 metres remaining and stayed on strongly under continued urging to deny Joseph O'Brien trainee and G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. second Islandsinthestream (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) by a neck. The podium was an O'Brien family affair with the winner's stablemate Illinois (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) keeping on well to finish 3/4-of-a-length adrift in third. Pedigree Notes Los Angeles, half-brother to a yearling colt by No Nay Never, is one of three winners from as many runners produced by an unraced half-sister to G3 Prix Messidor victor Impulsif (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). The February-foaled dark bay is a full-brother to G3 Ballyroan S. third Hector De Maris (Ire) and this year's G3 Prix Penelope third Be Happy (Ire). His third dam is G3 Prix de Flore victrix Allez Les Trois (Riverman), who produced G1 Prix du Jockey Club-winning sire Anabaa Blue (GB) (Anabaa), is a half-sister to storied blue hen Urban Sea (Miswaki). Palmetto (blue silks) scores in the A$1 million Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m). Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au It was another bumper payday for the connections of former South Island galloper Palmetto who prevailed in a narrow-three-way finish in the A$1 million Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) at Randwick on Saturday. The five-year-old son of Ghibellines was perfectly ridden by in-form hoop Kathy O’Hara to score by a nose over another former Kiwi in Detonator Jack, with Waterford a further nose away in third. Now prepared by John Sargent, Palmetto began his racing career in the Ascot Park stable of Sally McKay, for whom he had nine starts for three wins. He collected a black-type double in the Listed Dunedin Guineas (1500m) and Southland Guineas (1600m) in February of 2022. Now racing in the colours of prominent Australian owner Carl Holt, but with some of his original New Zealand ownership still involved, Palmetto has had a total of 22 starts for six wins, three placings and A$1,142,079 in stakes. It is the second major prize-money race Palmetto has won, having scored in the A$500,000 The Coast (1600m) at Gosford in May, with many of his South Island connections on course at Randwick to celebrate the win on Saturday. “They’re from the South Island – they can’t believe it,” a delighted John Sargent said. “It’s a lot of money for them and he has been a great horse since he has finally aclimatised. “I thought Kathy would suit him and she is riding the crest of a wave. “I said to Kathy to hide him away, he has got a good finish and don’t get there too soon and she just timed it perfectly. “It is a fantastic result and great for the owners from New Zealand. They are all a bit hungover after the All Blacks won this morning, but they made it today and they will be back in three weeks for the final.” Palmetto will now contest the A$2 million Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill on November 11, with the set weights plus penalties race restricted to five-year-olds. Kathy O’Hara, a recent winner of the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on Rediener, was thrilled to land another big prize on a horse that fought so gamely. “He really wanted to win. He was all out late and needed to find a little more, and he did,” she said. “He is a lovely horse to ride and I am really happy for Sarge and the team and the owners seem like a great bunch of people. It is really nice when the good guys win.” By White Robe Lodge stallion Ghibellines, an impeccably bred son of Shamardal, Palmetto is one of six stakes winners and 14 stakes performers by the stallion, who is also the sire of Group One winner Smokin’ Romans. Out of the winning Darci Brahma mare Carolina Island, who stems from the family of Group Three winner and blue-hen mare In Clover, Palmetto was offered by Three Valleys at the 2020 South Island Sale on Gavelhouse Plus, where he was passed in with a reserve of just $10,000. Peace Officer runs out a comfortable winner at Randwick Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au Clarry Conners, a prominent figure in the world of horse racing, expressed his relief as his talented four-year-old, Peace Officer, triumphed at Randwick on Saturday, securing jockey Aaron Bullock a back-to-back victory. The son of Iffraaj entered the race as the +260 favourite with horse racing betting sites, enduring a challenging battle down the straight, marked by some bumping with rivals. However, he eventually found a clear path and surged ahead, winning by just over a length from the consistently competitive Satness. Conners, a Hall of Fame trainer, commented, “We were in trouble for a little while, and it was a bit hard to see on the TV, but he won. That’s all we can do.” Conners holds Peace Officer in high regard and even contemplated the possibility of aiming for the prestigious Golden Eagle (1500m) at one point. He stated, “He’s a very good horse, I think. But now we will have to aim higher and see what we can do. I am waiting to get the horse over a mile. “He will be a different horse, honestly. I am sure he wants further. Have a look at his form. He is very consistent and is a lovely horse to train.” With this victory, Peace Officer has now won four of his 12 starts, including three of his past four outings, which also includes a recent Midway win at Rosehill. Peace Officer, bred by Jamieson Park, is one of three winners from the mare Coyote Miss, sired by Commands. Conners openly admitted that he initially knew little about Iffraaj, the proven sire of Peace Officer, when he purchased the yearling for A$90,000 at the Sydney Classic Sale. However, he has since become well-versed in the stallion’s impressive pedigree and achievements. “He was some distance away when I first caught sight of him,” Conners recalled. “I quickly moved closer and could see he had great presence. He looked more mature than most yearlings, moved beautifully, and had a commanding head. “I don’t mind admitting I knew little about the colt’s sire Iffraaj and was unfamiliar with his distaff side. “I liked the fact that his dam Coyote Miss was by the very good sire Commands, while his second dam Miss Alabama was by Woodman and had left a number of winners.” Several clients were equally impressed with Peace Officer, and a syndicate was formed to race him, bringing together both existing and new supporters of the talented gelding. Conners summarized the journey, stating, “Several existing clients liked him as much as I did, and a few new ones came on board as well. We soon had a lovely little syndicate together to race him as Peace Officer.” More racing news View the full article

Trainer Ben Hayes is looking for the last pieces of the puzzle for to fall into place for Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars) in his bid to win the Gr.1 Cox Plate on Saturday. “Everything has set up perfectly for him. What he needs now is rain and a barrier and if he gets them I couldn’t be happier,” Hayes said. “He’ll be back at The Valley, which he loves, and he’s looking for the 2000 metres,” the co-trainer said. Mr Brightside has had four starts at Moonee Valley for three wins, including the 2023 All-Star Mile and the 2022 Gr.2 Feehan Stakes. His only failure came in last year’s Cox Plate, when he finished seventh. Hayes said Mr Brightside returned to Lindsay Park, at Euroa, straight after his last start when he finished second to Fangirl in the King Charles III Stakes (1600m) at Randwick. “We are very happy with him. He pulled up out of the race very well and he worked well this morning,” Hayes said on Saturday. “We are right on track. He will do his final piece of work on Tuesday at the farm and then head down to Flemington on Thursday.” Hayes said although Mr Brightside’s effort to finish second behind Fangirl was meritorious, he wasn’t suited by the firm track at Randwick. It was his first defeat this campaign after chalking up five straight wins prior. Mr Brightside has drifted to $9 to win the Cox Plate. View the full article

While Saturday’s Gr.1 Cox Plate (2040m) continues to be an intriguing head-scratcher before the final field comes together on Tuesday morning, the day’s other Group One at The Valley, it seems, carries no such mystery. The Te Akau star Imperatriz (I Am Invincible) is the heavy favourite to take the A$2 million Manikato Stakes (1200m) and her trainer Mark Walker could give her potential rivals little to look forward to just six days out from the sprint feature. “Everything is good with her, she hasn’t missed a beat,’’ Walker reported. “I know our mare is really happy within herself and she’s fit and sound, that’s the main thing,’’ he said. Imperatriz is unbeaten at The Valley, having won the Gr.1 William Reid Stake (1200m) last autumn before stunning wins in the Gr.2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) and Gr.1 Moir Stakes (1000m) to start the spring. “She seems to love that track and she’ll love getting back to that sort of trip (1200m), so we’re looking forward to it,’’ he said. But Walker’s not taking it for granted. “We all know Group Ones are never easy to win, especially in Australia, so she’ll go there in great order and we’re expecting her to run well.’’ Imperatriz then progresses to the Gr.1 Champions Sprint (1200m) at Flemington, where, if successful in both races, she would go to the paddock with the extraordinary record of 23 starts for 17 wins, nine at Group One level. With Gr.2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) winner and Moir Stakes runner-up Asfoora likely to miss the Manikato, Imperatriz is rated a $1.60 prospect ahead of $9 chance Uncommon James, I A Me and Bella Nipotina. Royally bred colt Savaglee (NZ) (Savabeel) lived up to his impeccable breeding when he gave his rivals a galloping lesson at Trentham on Saturday. The son of Savabeel and O’Reilly mare Glee comes from a family that boasts a host of Group One winners including brilliant two-year-old filly Good Faith and champion New Zealand three-year-olds Aegon and Daffodil. The flashy bay had produced a professional display to win over 850m at the Te Awamutu trials earlier in the month and brought the same impeccable manners to his raceday debut as he jumped straight to the front in the hands of apprentice Niranjan Parmar in the 900m scurry. It was clear that Parmar had a lapful of horse turning for home and when he released the brakes, the Mike Moroney and Pam Gerard-trained runner bolted away to win easing down by four lengths from Sunrise, another debutant who chased gamely in the run home. Gerard was delighted with the display which should see her charge qualify for a start in the Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) at Ellerslie in January. “We’ll work backwards from the Karaka Million, send him home for a week long break at The Oaks Stud, but I think he’s the type of colt that will benefit by continuing to tick over so we’ll plan a few more races for him,” Gerard said. “He’s very professional, fast, and done everything right so far as a two-year-old colt. “We thought the race served as a nice option to get some coin in the bank and also give him a trip away. “The footing came up ideal and he’s probably exceeded my expectations a bit in the way that he won. “He hasn’t been off the bridle yet, so, yes, it’s pretty encouraging to see him win in that manner. “Niranjan got a good feel of him at the Waipa trials and he’s done a really good job, getting him out cleanly, and looking after him in the run where he was sitting pretty. “Keeping him ticking over is probably the best way to manage him, to help prevent him getting too coltish, and he’s a pretty fit and ready sort of horse.” Bred by Waikato Stud, Savaglee is owned by The Oaks Stud who purchased him for $400,000 during the Book 1 Sale a Karaka earlier this year. The $23,000 prizemoney cheque sees him currently listed in first place on the order of entry for the rich Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) to be run at Ellerslie on 27 January. View the full article

Trainer Peter Didham has found himself in an enviable position after promising mare Kana (NZ) (Tivaci) finally got the raceday luck she deserved to run out an impressive six-length winner over 1200m at Trentham on Saturday. The four-year-old had been desperately unlucky in her two most recent starts when blocked for a run when seeking a gap between horses and for a split-second on Saturday Didham thought lightning might be about to strike a third time. Rider Johnathan Parkes had other ideas and guided the daughter of Tivaci through a narrow opening at the 300m before she exploded clear to win with ridiculous ease in the rating 65 contest. Didham breathed a sigh of relief as he had told the owners of the mare that she was flying in her work and the only thing that might hinder her on Saturday was bad luck in running. “She really deserved that win as she had been very unlucky at her last two starts and the way she had worked I thought she would be hard to beat today,” Didham said. “I said to Parkesy that all she needed was clear running, however I won’t repeat what I said when I thought he was going to get trapped in the home straight. “He got her clear and when she balanced up she just exploded away. “I’ve had an opinion of her since she first came into the stable and she won impressively on debut as a two-year-old. “She got into a few bad habits after that and we probably made a mistake trying to run her on the speed in her races. “This time she has come in as a much kinder horse and she is thriving on having a natural pattern where she can settle and then get home strongly.” While Didham will take a few days to decide on a new target for his charge, he is toying with the idea of trying her in the big sprint events during the Christchurch Cup Carnival at Riccarton next month. “Parkesy came back in and said she absolutely thrived racing down the Trentham dogleg today,” he said. “That would augur well for maybe taking her to Riccarton and having a go at some black type down there. “I think she will get over more ground in the future, but while she is sprinting so well a race liked the Stewards Handicap (Listed, 1200m) might be right up her alley as she would get in with a nice light weight.” The Listed Lindauer Stewards Stakes (1200m) is the feature sprint on the last day of the Riccarton Carnival on 18 November. Jockey Warren Kennedy produced a daring ride aboard progressive stayer Nest Egg (NZ) (Reliable Man) at Te Rapa on Saturday, which paved the way for a victory that showed he is on track for a tilt at the Gr.3 Martin Collins New Zealand Cup (3200m) next month. Trainer Stephen Marsh has played a patient hand with the five-year-old son of Reliable Man who finished a creditable sixth in the 2022 Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) during his three-year-old campaign when prepared by Royden Bergerson. Having the fourth start in his current preparation, Nest Egg lapped up the 2400m journey of the rating 84 contest with Kennedy making a lightning move from midfield to dispute proceedings in front at the 800m mark. Kennedy shot him to a clear three length advantage turning for home and he maintained a strong gallop to comfortably hold out race favourite Pinion with Za’faran making ground resolutely along the inner to claim third. Marsh was delighted with the ride by Kennedy and to see the horse make a return to the winners’ enclosure in this campaign. “He (Kennedy) absolutely nailed that,” Marsh said. “He got him into a beautiful spot early on and when the speed came out of the race he knew when to move. “He also knew he is getting ready for a two-mile journey so he didn’t want him having a hard run.” Marsh was alluding to the nomination for the New Zealand Cup held by Nest Egg who will also contest another feature on the first day of the Riccarton carnival that commences on 11 November. “He’s on track for the New Zealand Cup and he’s just coming right at the right time,” he said. “He finally got the track, distance and draw today, everything to suit and that gives us confidence to head down the Metropolitan Trophy (Listed, 2500m) on the first day at Riccarton and then into the Cup. “He is so laid back and is a pleasure to have and he will stay all day.” TAB Bookmakers quickly revised their Fixed Odds market for the New Zealand Cup with Nest Egg now the equal $6 favourite alongside the Kevin Myers-trained Aljay, who won the 2022 edition of the time-honoured contest. Nest Egg, who was raised at boutique Manawatu nursery Highden Park, is out of the stakes placed Bahhare mare Run To The Bank and was bred by David Price and Brian Stewart who also share in his ownership. Darwin trainer Peter Stennett is having an excellent start to the 2023/24 season and his impressive run continued with a winning double at Fannie Bay on Saturday. Trainer Peter Stennett and apprentice jockey Emma Lines continued their good form with winning doubles at Darwin’s Fannie Bay on Saturday. Stennett won the final two events on the six-race card over 1600m (0-58) with The Albion (+300 with horse betting sites), with Lines aboard, and New Enterprise (+1100), partnered by Vanessa Arnott. That made it seven wins for the season for Stennett, currently third in the Top End and Country trainers’ premiership behind Gary Clarke (14) and Phil Cole (8). For Stennett, it proved an uplifting day following the recent passing of his sister and father-in-law. Lines, 17, who can’t keep out of the spotlight, enjoyed back-to-back wins when she guided Exceedingly Magic home for her master Cole over 1000m (Class 2). That’s 10 wins for the 2023/24 campaign for the teenager, who sits second behind Jarrod Todd (14) in the jockeys’ premiership. The Albion, a six-year-old gelding, is firing as victory made it three wins from his past five starts – he finished second on the two other occasions. The son of Shamexpress led by two lengths at the 1200m entering the back straight before he had Clarke’s Prince Ruban (+140 fav) for company. Passing the 500m, The Albion held sway from Prince Ruban and with no impending threat a two-horse battle in the home straight ensued. The Albion, who had a slight hiccup in the back straight when Lines attempted to slow the tempo, was still going strong at the 200m and with a 4kg weight advantage overcame Prince Ruban by just over a length. Cole’s +700 hope Benevolent was five lengths away in the third place. After a stint in SA, The Albion returned to the Top End and disappointed in three races at Fannie Bay, but hasn’t missed a beat since winning on Katherine Cup Day in August. Lines is mastering the art as a pacemaker and the same situation applied when Exceedingly Magic eclipsed Clarke’s Patriotic King (+105 fav), who broke the track record for 1100m en route to victory by 9.8 lengths on September 9. Exceedingly Magic, a six-year-old mare, was returning after an unlucky fourth over 1100m (0-58) at the annual Katherine meeting, but won a 900m barrier trial by 6.2 lengths on September 26. Pinging out of the gates before taking a sit on the fence, the daughter of Outreach soon had Patriotic King for company, with Tayarn Halter’s third-placed Madame Romanov (+3000) not that far away. Patriotic King led narrowly at the 500m and looked the likely winner turning for home, but Exceedingly Magic (+700) wouldn’t yield and fought back passing the 200m as Cole’s Fly Nice (+650) stormed home. It was a genuine three-way go before Exceedingly Magic (54kg) pipped Patriotic King (59kg) and Fly Nice (55kg), with 0.36 lengths separating the trio across the line. New Enterprise, a winner on Anzac Day before seven unplaced starts, shared the early lead before skipping two lengths clear at the 1000m. The five-year-old gelding was cruising exiting the back straight, and although Garry Lefoe’s Rising Fire ($2.40 fav) and Chris Pollard’s Jimmy’s Secret (+750) made ground the other runners were labouring. Turning for home with 350m to go, New Enterprise was three lengths clear and even though Arnott kept turning to check on the opposition the son of Anacheeva prevailed by 6.3 lengths from Rising Fire and Jimmy’s Secret. The Mark Nyhan-trained Velvet Revolution (+1500), with Sonja Logan as the pilot, impressed when Dissident’s four-year-old mare led throughout in her NT debut over 1100m (BM54). The former Queenslander, victorious in a 900m barrier trial on September 5 before her first Darwin appearance was delayed when scratched a fortnight ago, was two lengths clear at the 800m and in full control. Velvet Revolution, unplaced in four previous starts, was well clear and swishing her tail at the 200m before easing up to sink Clarke’s Patria (+240) and Pollard’s Toppa The Mountain (+1700) by 4.3 lengths. Clarke’s $1.65 favourite Starspangledancer, aiming for three straight wins, was within striking distance of Velvet Revolution before capitulating at the 400m. Finishing at the tail of the field in seventh place, it was confirmed that Starspangledancer had suffered from cardiac arryhthmia. The Chris Nash-trained Son Of Bielski (Mark Pegus) made it back to back wins when he swooped home at the 300m to seal victory from Clarke’s Global Wonder ($15), who led for most of the race, and Cole’s fast-finishing Charretera (+1200) over 1300m (0-64). Son Of Bielski (+200 fav), a seven-year-old gelding by Dissident, settled ninth after jumping from the outside gate in the 10-horse field before accelerating at the 600m and although forced six deep in a race where there were many chances swinging for home he just had too much class. Having not won since July last year, Clarke’s +260 Autocratic (Todd) ended the drought with a win over stablemate Bel’s Banner (+900) and Cole’s El Magnificence ($5) over 1200m (0-70). A seven-year-old gelding by Wandjina, Autocratic, a former Darwin Guineas winner, settled three lengths adrift of early pacemakers Niewand and El Magnificence in third place before making ground at the final bend. It turned into a four-way battle when Bel’s Banner, winding up from the back, pounced at the 200m after El Magnificence had caught Niewand and after Autocratic had made his move. It was Autocratic’s fifth start after returning to action on Darwin Cup Day on August 7 after spending 12 months on the sidelines. More racing news View the full article

Nysos (c, 2, Nyquist–Zetta Z, by Bernardini), a $550,000 OBS April breezer (:9 4/5*), made that pricetag look like a bargain with a jaw-dropping 'TDN Rising Star' performance on debut in the Santa Anita nightcap Saturday evening. One of three entered for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, the 6-1 chance had a pair of bullets on the worktab, including a four-furlong move in :47 1/5 (1/16) Oct. 12. He was hustled away from his inside draw by Kyle Frey and slugged it out from the outside with his rail-drawn stablemate and $1.3-million OBS April graduate Urban Legend (Into Mischief) heading into the far turn. Always traveling the better of the pair, Nysos took over with authority leaving the quarter pole and opened daylight from there to win by 10 1/2 lengths, stopping the timer for six furlongs in a very sharp 1:08.97. Urban Legend stayed on for second. Nysos becomes the first 'Rising Star' for Nyquist. The Nyquist x Bernardini cross is also responsible for GISW Gretzky the Great, already one of four top-level winners for his young sire. Closing out her sixth year in the training ranks, Cherie DeVaux added yet another notch on her belt, collecting her first Keeneland stakes victory in Saturday's feature, the GII Lexus Raven Run S. Helping her achieve that goal, DeVaux was represented by GIII Charles Town Oaks winner Vahva (Gun Runner), who was accompanied by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, also aboard in her last-out score in West Virginia. “I don't know if there are words to really describe that,” said a visibly moved DeVaux following the win. “Our team has really worked hard with all of our horses, especially this filly, and it's just so rewarding.” Sent off at 5-2 behind 4-5 choice Alva Starr (Lord Nelson), Vahva broke alertly from post 4 and was tucked in along the inside as the favorite raced to the front, carving out an opening quarter in :22.61. Continuing to show the way through a :45.48 half as GIII Remington Park Oaks runner-up Ancient Peace (War Front) forced the issue in a three-wide second while Vahva continued to bide her time in third, Alva Starr rounded the home turn in control and appeared en route to victory. Set down for the stretch run under a strong hand ride by Velazquez, Vahva slowly reeled in the game pacesetter, poked her head in front late and inched away in the final strides to collect her second consecutive graded stakes victory. DeVaux added, “Johnny and I have had great success this year in stakes races, and I told him, 'There's one thing we haven't done yet, and that's come into the infield [at Keeneland] for a trophy presentation,' so I'm elated that he got that done. It's beautiful [out here],” A winner in her third career star at Churchill Downs last November, the $280,000 Keeneland September buy finished third behind Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief) in her stakes bow in the Dec. 26 Untapable S. before finishing fourth to that classy filly once again in the 1 1/16-mile GII Rachel Alexandra S. Feb. 18. Cutting back to 6 1/2 furlongs in a Keeneland optional claimer in April, she came was beaten narrowly by next-out stakes winner Positano Sunset (Goldencents) and came right back to score at the same distance at Churchill May 5. Prior to her Aug. 25 Charles Town Oaks score, she finished a respectable third behind the ill-fated Maple Leaf Mel (Cross Traffic) in Belmont's GIII Victory Ride S. July 8. Velazquez was aboard for her two most recent races prior to the Raven Run. “We took the same approach [as the Charles Town Oaks, also seven furlongs but around two turns],” explained Velazquez. “She came running and we tried to get a good position. Obviously, we knew the speed horse [runner-up Alva Starr] was going to be really tough to beat. Cherie has done a great job with the horse and gave me the opportunity to stay with her. “Everything worked out good. I got close to the heels of the horse in front (Alva Starr), held my position and when I pulled her out she responded. That's all you can ask of the horses. She was there for me, and she did it all.” Pedigree Notes: Stakes-winning Holiday Soiree, who also finished third in the GI Humana Distaff, was secured by Rock Ridge Thoroughbreds for $160,000 at Keeneland November in 2021. The 14-year-old mare will be re-offered at next month's Keeneland sale under the Warrendale banner. Since her purchase, she produced a filly by City of Light in 2022 followed by a Nyquist filly this term. She was bred back to City of Light. After a claim of foul by Twin City (Klimt) which took place at the first turn against Solo Album (Curlin), Touch'n Ride (g, 3, Candy Ride {Arg}–Niigon's Touch, by Niigon) was promoted to the winner's circle in Saturday's Ontario Derby. The bay gelding won over the Tapeta in Toronto by 5 1/4 lengths at second asking July 30 before running a well-beaten fifth in the King's Plate Aug. 20. Winning the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown Oct. 1 in the Breeders' Stakes by a nose over SW Elysian Field (Hard Spun), Touch'n Ride was installed as the 2-1 favorite here. With an even beginning, the Layne Giliforte trainee settled to the outside mid-pack just before the first turn as Solo Album cutoff Twin City to set the pace. Clocking all the fractions throughout, the leader held sway along the rail up the backstretch, continued into the final turn and with the field bearing down on him, crossed the wire by a length ahead of Touch'n Ride. Once the steward's took down Soul Album, he was placed fifth, with Cool Kiss (Kantharos) finishing second, Twowaycrossing (English Channel) third, as Twin City was moved to fourth. “I'm really proud of him,” said Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame jockey Robert Landry, now General Manager of Chiefswood Stables. “Earlier in the year, we didn't even nominate him to the Triple Crown. He was a slow developer. In April, Layne and I watched him work together and I said, 'We may have made a mistake not nominating him.' You know, you've got to let the horses tell you and he did, and he ran a tremendous race. We'll give him a little break now. He's done a lot. We'll give him a chance to get bigger and stronger and bring him back next year.” Pedigree Notes: This was the 57th graded stakes winner for Candy Ride (Arg). Out of SW Niigon's Touch, who is also responsible for Breeders' S. hero Neepawa (Scat Daddy), the winner has a weanling half-sister by Justify who was foaled Apr. 1. Her dam was bred to Twirling Candy for next year. Some horses never seem to set a foot wrong. Speightstown is one of those. From $2-million Keeneland July yearling to Breeders' Cup winner to champion to influential sire, he's not only done it all, but done it all extremely well. When WinStar's David Hanley was asked if he had a few words to say about the remarkable 25-year-old, he said with a laugh: “I've more than a few words. He's a wonderful horse. I've been very lucky and fortunate to be around him for the past 10 years. He's a magnificent character and a very kind-natured horse. Always looking for treats, but always willing to do what you ask him to do. He has a beautiful head and a sweet nature. “Up until a year a year ago, we used to ride him every day and he would bow his neck and swell up like he was going to the racetrack. He was a wonderful racehorse and is now a great stallion with 26 Grade I winners in his career. At the age of 25, he has Prince of Monaco, the highest rated 2-year-old in America right now, and several young sons at stud, which is amazing. He's also one of the best broodmare sires right now. He's just a wonderful horse, an amazing horse. It's been a privilege to have him.” Speightstown (1998 chestnut horse, Gone West–Silken Cat, by Storm Cat) Lifetime record: Ch. sprinter, GISW, 16-10-2-2, $1,258,256 Breeders' Cup connections: B-Aaron U. and Marie Jones (KY); O-Eugene and Laura Melnyk; T-Todd Pletcher; J-John Velazquez.
