Classy mare Val Di Zoldo (NZ) (War Decree) will have the opportunity to test her talents at the highest level this term after resuming with a tidy trial at Taupo on Monday. In the care of Cambridge horseman Tony Pike, Val Di Zoldo broke a streak of poor luck when taking out the Gr.3 Manawatu Breeders Stakes (2050m) and Gr.2 Travis Stakes (2000m) in the autumn, which lifted her rating up to 98. In her first outing since the Travis Stakes, Val Di Zoldo strode out comfortably in her 900m heat, going to the line under no pressure for regular rider Wiremu Pinn. “I’m really pleased with the way she’s coming up, it was just a quiet trial for her but she went to the line strongly and was strong through the line, so she’s come back in great order,” Pike said. “She’s reasonably high in the ratings now, so we’ll probably concentrate on the second two legs of the triple crown (Gr.1 Howden Insurance Mile, 1600m and Gr.1 Livamol Classic, 2040m). “She’s a Group Two winner, so if she could pick up a black-type placing in one of those races, it would be very valuable for her as a broodmare, which will probably come next season.” Her stablemate Slipper Island (No Nay Never) had a coming-of-age campaign in the autumn, winning four races on the bounce down the Trentham chute. The last of the quartet came in the Listed City Of Napier Sprint (1200m), where he held off subsequent stakes winners Pier and Tomodachi. While he believes the gelding can be just as effective around a bend, Pike is looking to target some of the straight track features this season, including during New Zealand Cup Week in November. “He was just there for a day out, as were most of mine today, but he went really well to finish just in behind the placegetters,” Pike said. “He’ll take good improvement from that. “Where we head in the short term, I’m not quite sure yet, I’m looking to get him to a handicap race like the Stewards (Listed, 1200m) or something along those lines on a reasonably light weight. “He’s coming up really well and he’ll probably have one more trial before kicking off at Te Rapa on the 14th of September.” Riccarton was the setting for Lucy In The Sky’s (NZ) (Hello Youmzain) biggest success to date, when the talented filly took out the Listed Champagne Stakes (1200m) on the venue’s synthetic track. That success came off the back of a strong effort into sixth in the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie, where Pike intends to kick her off in the new term after a quiet outing in her age-group heat on Monday. “We hadn’t done a lot with her in trackwork, so I wanted to keep her under wraps today,” he said. “She’ll take a lot of improvement out of today’s trial, she’s still a bit wintery in her coat so it should bring her on nicely. “She’ll have one more trial, then head to the Gold Trail (Gr.3, 1200m) on the 6th of September. “She’s a really big-actioned filly, although she’s not overly big, so I would be a little bit concerned if she struck a genuine soft or heavy track. The Gold Trail will be run at Ellerslie, and she’s won on there on debut and ran creditably in the Sistema, and I think that track should be a lot more consistent and provide more certainty going into the spring.” Pike welcomed the return of Churchillian (NZ) (Churchill) earlier in the day, a Group Three-winning mare who has been off the scene for over nine months following an injury. “She trialled really well at Counties in December, but pulled up with a very unusual ligament injury to her hind hock,” Pike said. “Hence, she’s been off the scene for quite a while. “It’s good to see her back, she’s grown into a big strong mare and I thought her trial today, even though she’s been away from the race track for over nine months, was very pleasing. “She’ll have one more trial before heading back to the races, but she looks to be in for a really good season in those 1400m-1600m fillies and mares races, of which there are plenty around. “I’m looking forward to having her back on the race track.” Another in pursuit of black-type honours this spring is Cannon Hill (NZ) (Ardrossan), a lightly-raced gelding who held his own well in a trial won by La Crique. “I was really pleased with him, he was probably a bit fresh and trialled a bit above himself, but I thought his trial was really pleasing,” Pike said. “He’s a horse that is nicely rated at the moment to get to a race like the Coupland’s (TAB) Mile (Gr.3, 1600m) on a nice light weight, so he’ll tick his way through the spring and that’s probably the race we’ll target this preparation.” View the full article

The 13th edition of the Riders Up! East vs. West Jockey Karaoke contest kicked off to great success in Saratoga, and raised over $100,000 at the conclusion of the festivities, announced the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF). Leading a competition reportedly as fierce as anything on the track, Michael and Matthew Straight commanded the crowd with their performance of “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers. They had the crowd on their feet and singing along, and the brothers left their competition in their wake as they secured a double by winning both the Judges' Choice and the People's Choice Award. The event was judged by LSU Racing's Randy Sarf; trainers Cherie DeVaux and Graham Motion; and by Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero. Held at the Vapor Night Club, an at-capacity crowd was treated to vocal talents and eye-popping costumes as well as a live auction. Tom Durkin served as emcee through the program and conducted the sale, which included a baseball bat signed by the Yankees' Aaron Judge. The item brought the evening's top bid of $9,500. The contest will shift west to the Del Mar jockeys, who will try to best their eastern counterparts Sunday Aug. 10. The festivities will be posted throughout the evening on all PDJF social media platforms, and after the judges name their favorite performance, the public will vote online for their favorite via Facebook and Twitter (X). Fans will also vote on the winners of both events to decide the 'Coast with the Most'. “General admission tickets (including one drink coupon) for each person are $75 with 7:45 p.m. entry to Belly Up in Solana Beach. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $175, which includes early entry 6:00 p.m. local time, open reserved seats, two drink coupons, and a buffet dinner with the jockeys. Performances are scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. local time and will feature live and silent auctions and a cash bar. Patrons must be 21 years of age or older to enter the premises. Tickets may be purchased here and registration to bid on the silent auction is also available on the page. The post Riders Up! 4th-Ellis, $102,850, Alw, 8-4, (NW2TL), 3yo, 5 1/2fT, 1:00.97, fm, nose. LITIGATION (c, 3, Twirling Candy–Argue, by Storm Cat), unplaced in two tries in maiden allowance company at Gulfstream in March, benefitted from a class drop to graduate by better than three lengths in a rained-off $75,000 maiden seller in the Churchill slop May 30. A near 8-1 chance for a first-level allowance over this course and trip July 13, the homebred overcame an awkward draw to win clear and was the 3-5 jolly to maintain the winning streak here. Racing as a team inside of second favorite and recent Dade Park Dash Stakes hero Troubleshooting (Not This Time) in the second flight, Litigation was given the hurry-up by Mario Gutierrez to secure a three-wide run on the swing for home while keeping his chief market rival to his outside. It was a line of four at the head of the lane, as Dade Park Dash fourth Star's Image (Caravaggio) railed through, and though he looked all over destined for a runner-up effort when Troubleshooting struck the front just inside the furlong pole, Litigation counterpunched and was narrowly best in the finish. The winner is a half-brother to Slimey (Quality Road), SP, $265,964; and to SW Quality Response (Quality Road), who was sold to Australia's Yarraman Park Stud for $510,000 in foal to Authentic at Keeneland November in 2021. The colt's MSW & MGSP third dam Words of War (Lord At War {Arg}) was responsible for MGSW/MGISP sire E Dubai (Mr. Prospector) and 2000 GI Del Mar Oaks winner No Matter What (Nureyev), the dam of MG1SW champion Rainbow View. Argue is the dam of a yearling full-brother to Litgation and was most recently covered by Blame. Lifetime Record: 5-3-0-0, $165,769. Click for the Equibase.com chart. Darren Filkins has been unanimously voted to fill the vacancy on the board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) created by the recent passing of John Harris, the group announced Monday. The CEO of Harris Farms since January 2022, Filkins has held a variety of agriculturally centered positions before joining Harris Farms, and is a known face in California. “I'd previously worked with Darren through some difficult issues and was impressed by his intelligence, forthrightness and integrity–two characteristics welcomed on any industry board,” said TOC Board member Ty Green, chairman of the Northern California Racing Affairs subcommittee. “Harris Farms has been a big part of the history of California racing over the past decades, and with the passing of Mr. Harris, asking Darren to continue the Harris industry legacy by serving on the TOC Board in his place seemed natural and in the best interest of racing. We are very happy he agreed to join us.” The post Darren Filkins Appointed to TOC Board appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. When it comes to the 2025 crop of first-season sires in Europe, there's one stallion who is now operating in truly rarefied air, fittingly so for a horse going by the name of Starman. With 16 individual winners on the board in Europe, the son of Dutch Art is currently six clear of Nando Parrado and eight clear of A'Ali, with Palace Pier, Space Blues and Supremacy then locked in a three-way tie for fourth with seven winners apiece. Lucky Vega has six, while Ubettabelieveit and Victor Ludorum each have five. Now, it's worth pointing out that Starman still has a big job on his hands, numerically, to match the achievements of some of the other leading first-season sires of recent years. By way of comparison, the likes of Havana Grey (27 in 2022), Blue Point (24 in 2023), Cotai Glory (22 in 2021), Sioux Nation (19 in 2022) had all amassed more winners by the end of Goodwood. In 2020, Mehmas had accumulated 14 winners at the same stage, despite the fact the season only started on June 1 due to the delay to racing caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Mehmas ended that year with 55 individual juvenile winners, a record-breaking tally for a first-season sire in Europe. Blue Point made it to 49 three years later, while Sioux Nation eventually came out on top in his season-long scrap with Havana Grey in 2022, accumulating 44 winners to that rival's 42. Time will tell what Starman's end-of-year tally looks like, with just under five months of 2025 remaining, but in lots of ways the hard work has already been done, so quickly has he distinguished himself as a prolific source of high-class two-year-olds. Quantity is one thing – and Starman has that in spades with 201 registered foals from his first year at Tally-Ho – but quality is quite another. It's in the latter department where he's really excelled, with his four individual Group winners putting him in that rarefied air we spoke of. For context, Frankel and Too Darn Hot are the only other European-based stallions in the last decade to come up with four Group-winning juveniles from their first crop. The G2 Lowther Stakes winner Queen Kindly headlined Frankel's offering in 2016, also featuring the G3 Princess Margaret Stakes heroine Fair Eva, G3 Prix de Conde scorer Frankuus and G3 Prix d'Aumale victrix Toulifaut. As for Too Darn Hot, he went one better when striking at the top level with his Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Fallen Angel in 2023. Sunday's G1 Prix Rothschild heroine was ably supported in that first season with victories for Darnation in the G2 May Hill Stakes, Alyanaabi in the G3 Tattersalls Stakes and Carolina Reaper in the G3 Zukunfts-Rennen. What sets Starman apart, however, is that Frankel had just one Group winner (Fair Eva) to his name at this relatively early stage of the season, while Too Darn Hot was still yet to open his account in that category. In fact, Starman is the first freshman sire since 2015 to have registered more than one Group winner by the end of Goodwood. First-Season Sires with the Most Group Winners Since 2019 4* – Starman (2025) 4 – Too Darn Hot (2023) 3 – Belardo (2020) 3 – Havana Grey (2022) 3 – Night Of Thunder (2019) 3 – Pride Of Dubai (2020) 3 – Saxon Warrior (2022) With so much time in the year remaining, Starman must be a safe bet to surpass even the achievements of Frankel and Too Darn Hot by finding a fifth individual Group winner from somewhere. Perhaps it could be Flowerhead, already second in the G2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, or maybe Gold Digger, who was sixth in the G3 Albany Stakes at the same meeting. Maybe it will be one of the many Starman juveniles yet to take their first steps on a racecourse. He's still only had 54 individual runners, from those 201 registered foals, so there should be plenty of ammunition waiting in the wings. And then there's the quartet who have already put his name in lights, with the promise of more to come. Certainly, the speedy Lady Iman doesn't look finished yet, with trainer Ger Lyons confirming on Monday that there's every chance she could take on her elders in the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York later this month. The Tally-Ho homebred was her sire's first winner when making her debut at Dundalk back in late-March, before later becoming her sire's first Group-race winner when landing May's G3 Fillies Sprint Stakes at Naas. Beaten just once in five career starts, she most recently doubled her Group-race tally when also winning last week's G3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood. Lady Iman now has a Timeform rating of 104, which sees her tied with Venetian Sun among Starman's top fillies, with the latter also having a 'p' attached to her rating to denote that she is likely to progress further. The Karl Burke-trained Venetian Sun, who followed up her Albany win in the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket last time, is another with a Group 1 target looming on the horizon, with the Prix Morny at Deauville reported to be next on her agenda. That just leaves the G2 Prix Robert Papin heroine Green Sense and G3 Tyros Stakes winner North Coast, both trained by Joseph O'Brien. A late withdrawal from Monday's Irish EBF Ballyhane Stakes at Naas, Green Sense has earned a Timeform rating of 96, while North Coast, with a rating of 105, is set to make his next appearance in the G1 National Stakes at the Curragh, after winning the Tyros by six lengths. Altogether Starman is now responsible for seven black-type runners in Europe, an impressive roll of honour for a horse who didn't make his own debut until the July of his three-year-old season for trainer Ed Walker and owner-breeder David Ward. He quickly rattled off a hat-trick of wins, notably landing the Listed Garrowby Stakes at York, before enjoying the highlight of his eight-race career when winning the following year's G1 July Cup. Speaking to TDN Europe back in February, when Starman was a 1/3 shot to be crowned leading first-season sire (by number of winners), Walker said, “I don't think we will see too many run in April and May, but I am hoping that by Goodwood they will be rocking and rolling.” With Goodwood now in the rear-view mirror, it's fair to say that Starman has no doubt exceeded those expectations and then some, blowing our minds ever since Lady Iman met the judge in a hurry at Dundalk. 1st-Ellis, $44,000, Moc ($50,000), 8-4, (C), 2yo, 7f, 1:24.89, ft, 7 lengths. JUST ASAP (c, 2, Maxfield–Movie Moment {GSP}, by Paynter) dominated the Monday opener at Ellis from the front to become the fifth winner for his freshman sire (by Street Sense) as the 3-1 third choice. Off alertly from an outside gate, the May foal took up the running at an early stage and enjoyed a soft time of things on the engine through fractions of :23.31 and :47.04. Taken on by the slow-starting Honey Dutch (Knicks Go), who loomed a brief danger four or five wide at the quarter pole, the $50,000 OBS April breezer had all the answers and pulled away to score with something in reserve. Avery Place (Vino Rosso) came from well back for second and galloped out past the winner, while Honey Dutch was forced to settle for third. The bay is one of three winners from three starters for her Grade III-placed dam, a daughter of this breeder's dual Grade I victress Starrer (Dynaformer). The latter's stakes-placed daughter Star Act (Street Cry {Ire}) is responsible for Krikorian's champion 2-year-old filly Just F Y I (Justify) and the colt's third dam To the Hunt (Relaunch) was twice Grade III-placed and produced a half-dozen winners, including MGISW Stellar Jayne (Wild Rush) and the dam of GISW Star Billing (Dynaformer). Movie Moment has not produced a live foal since Just Asap and was bred to Good Magic this past season. Sales history: $95,000 RNA Ylg '24 FTKOCT; $50,000 2yo '25 OBSAPR. His team also created and developed the influencer program “A Stake in Stardom,” which has drawn industry-wide accolades and continues to garner mass attention from younger generations through the help of Griffin Johnson as a part owner of Grade I winner Sandman (Tapit) and 'TDN Rising Star' GSW Ewing (Knicks Go). “With Dan's strong background in digital strategy and industry partnerships, he is continuing to garner attention through the implementation of programs like A Stake in Stardom that advance our sport and its fanbase, ushering in a new generation of horse racing enthusiasts,” said James L. Gagliano, president and COO, The Jockey Club, and chair of ABR. “We are very pleased with the growing success of America's Best Racing, and I know that much of that success is because of Dan's devotion to promoting racing.” The post Dan Tordjman Named President of TJC Media Ventures appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
