Photo: Hong Kong Jockey Club Romantic Warrior’s quest for Hong Kong racing history was denied in extraordinary circumstances at Meydan Racecourse on Saturday night (5 April) when Danny Shum’s champion was thwarted by the barest possible margin by Japan’s Soul Rush in an epic staging of the G1 Dubai Turf (1800m). In front until virtually the last stride, Romantic Warrior was claimed by Soul Rush and jockey Cristian Demuro, who could scarcely believe Yasutoshi Ikee’s charge had timed his lunge to perfection to claim the most important win of his career. “It’s as good a performance as he’s ever produced, he beat the best horse in the world today,” Demuro said after he drove Soul Rush out of a chasing pack to cut down Romantic Warrior by a nose in 1m 45.84s with Maljoom third. “It is a special win because we are now part of the Romantic Warrior story. He doesn’t lose many races but today he found a good horse.” Jockey James McDonald and Danny Shum had to endure an agonising wait before the judges declared Soul Rush the winner as speculation whirled of a possible dead heat. Unfortunately for Shum, McDonald and owner Peter Lau, Soul Rush’s triumph was confirmed soon after. A regular competitor at Sha Tin where he has tasted defeat in the Group 1 LONGINES Hong Kong Mile (1600m) to Golden Sixty and Voyage Bubble, Soul Rush avenged his loss to Romantic Warrior in the Group 1 Yasuda Kinen (1600m) last year. Bidding for an unprecedented 11th Group 1 victory by a Hong Kong horse, Romantic Warrior earned HK$7.78 million for second place, taking his career earnings to a world record-extending HK$214.70 million. But McDonald was crushed after Romantic Warrior’s bid to add to his bulging haul of Group 1s – the LONGINES Hong Kong Cup (2022, 2023 & 2024), FWD QEII Cup (2022, 2023 & 2024) and 2024 Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup and three more in Australia, Japan and the United Arab Emirates – had come up desperately short. “He’s had a long campaign. McDonald immediately eased down Howdeepisyourlove and dismounted as George Boughey-trained mare Believing sped away under William Buick to win her first Group 1 race. Dubai stewards confirmed Howdeepisyourlove was humanely euthanised after being assessed at the Dubai Equine Hospital. Frankie Lor-trained Sword Point finished last of 14 runners in the Group 2 Godolphin Mile (1600m, dirt), beaten 46.42 lengths under McDonald, as Frankie Dettori drove Chief Stipe O’Neill’s Raging Torrent to a comfortable victory – the Italian’s 23rd – a Dubai World Cup meeting record for a jockey. After jumping away fairly, Sword Point gradually lost contact with the leading pack and steadily drifted out of contention as McDonald glanced down at the gelding’s legs. Saeed bin Suroor continued his remarkable record at Dubai World Cup the meeting with veteran Dubai Future’s victory in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup (3200m) under Silvestre de Sousa. The Dubawi nine-year-old’s win provided Bin Suroor with a record-extending 39th triumph at the meeting before Dark Saffron won the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen (1200m, dirt) for Ahmad bin Hamash and Connor Beasley. In possibly the most anticipated Derby prep of this year, Journalism (c, 3, Curlin–Mopotism, by Uncle Mo) proved he was the real deal Saturday in the GI Santa Anita Derby and will go to Louisville at the GI Kentucky Derby favorite. It was a field of just five in Arcadia, but it was a field bursting with quality, as the group stayed extremely compacted throughout. When last year's champion and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) sloughed off the ambitiously placed, but promising maiden Westwood (Authentic) for the lead, Baeza (McKinzie)-the half to Derby winner Mage and to Belmont winner Dornoch-joined him in the front as Journalism overcame trouble from the back to swing wide and wear his rivals down. Journalism flew down the middle of the track, catching Baeza and going right by him to win by about a length as Citizen Bull faded. It was approximately 10 lengths back to Westwood in third. Four weeks in advance of the GI Kentucky Derby, bettors made Journalism (Curlin) the mild 5-1 favorite with champion 2-year-old colt Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) the 8-1 second choice in the sixth and final pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW), Churchill Downs said via a press release on Saturday afternoon. The three-day pool closed at 4 p.m. ET in advance of the three Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series races at Aqueduct, Santa Anita and Keeneland. Total handle for the three-day Apr. 3-5 KDFW pool was $483,121 ($353,160 in the Win Pool and $129,961 in Exactas), a 28.5% gain vs. last year's $376,038 ($268,996 in the Win Pool and $107,042 in Exactas). Owners and trainers affected by the cancellation of racing at Aqueduct on Sunday, Mar. 30, will be compensated from the purse account, according to a Saturday release from the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association. On the Mar. 30 eight-race card there were 61 horses entered and nine were announced as scratched before the cancellation. The races on the card that day were put back up as extras. The managing owner of each horse that would have raced will receive $2,500, while the trainer of each horse will receive $1,000. NYRA's finance department is working to implement the payments as soon as possible. “Due to the extraordinary circumstances that caused the cancellation, we strongly advocated for some type of reimbursement to offset the lost racing opportunities, and the expenses incurred,” NYTHA President Tina Bond said. “We will also work with NYRA, the Gaming Commission and Genting to ensure better communication and to help prevent any additional incidents in the 15 months that we will continue to share the space at Aqueduct.” Senior Vice President of Racing and Operations for NYRA, Andrew Offerman said, “Over the last week, NYRA has engaged in a productive dialogue with NYTHA to arrive at a reimbursement level designed to alleviate the impact of last Sunday's incredibly unusual cancellation. After all the hype and highlights at Friday’s Night of Champions at Cambridge, harness racing returns today with a Sunday double header. The Cheviot Cup and a Group 3 for the two-year-old fillies highlights action at Addington while later in the day there’s a six race meeting at Manawatu, starting at 3.16pm. Big open field for Cheviot Cup By Mike Love With a history dating back to 1946, this year’s Cheviot Business Cheviot Cup Handicap Pace (4.02pm) has attracted a big field and plenty of chances. The two most heavily-supported runners are Xlendi ($3.90) and Renegade ($4.80). But the winning hopes don’t end there with Radha, Betterthancash, Double Time, Tanzania and Built For Glory and others also in the mix. “Sunday does look a great race for him, especially over the long trip because he is such a great stayer,” Renegade’s trainer Brendon Hill told Raceform. He’ll start off 30 metres. “What we’re doing with him now is preparing for the future too, because he’s got to be able to face up to the tape and step away well from the stands, so there’s a long-term benefit too.” Past Cup champions have included the likes of Tiger Tara (2015) and Starship (1988). Dixieland Delight David Butcher’s best of the day at Manawatu By Brigette Solomon Trainer and driver David Butcher heads to Manawatu today for the first time this season with several promising each way chances including one he trains in Brookside Girl. The five-year-old mare starts today in the S & A Telfer Stables Mobile Pace over 2000 metres and is resuming after a lengthy spell having last raced in August last year. “I am pretty happy with her, but she’s only had the one workout in a small heat at Cambridge leading up to this and it’s her first look at Manawatu,” says Butcher, “given the long break she’s had she’ll need the run, but she’s still a place chance today.” Brookside Girl is a winner of two races, both at Alexandra Park, and a further six placings from just 16 starts. She starts today’s event from barrier three and appears well placed to begin her new campaign. In the Wendy Devenport Stables Mobile Pace, Butcher is positive about the two horses trained by his son Benjamin, I Can Too (4) and Hearts And Aces (5). Butcher drives I Can Too, with Benjamin taking the reins on I Can Too. “There’s not a lot between the two of them and I think they’ve probably been racing in slightly better company with the majority of their starts having been at Auckland,” says Butcher, “they’re both each way chances if things go their way.” Prompting some family rivalry, Butcher’s other son Zachary also trains Enzo (1) who starts in the same race. The gelding finished third and fourth respectively at last week’s Manawatu meeting and is driven this week by Sailesh Abernethy. The horse Butcher considers his best chance of the day is the Scott Dickson trained Dixieland Delight who contests the Alan and Trina Shutkowski Stables Mobile Pace over 2000 metres. The Art Major mare has been in excellent form posting two wins and two seconds at Manawatu since joining the Dickson stable. Her most recent win was on Tuesday when she settled back in the field from her barrier eight draw, before rounding the field to lead over the final 1200 metres and score a comfortable win by a 1.75 length margin. “I know they’ve been pretty happy with her this week and her form is very good heading into todaym” says Butcher, “she is up in grade today so it’s a stronger field and it’s always just that bit harder to win as they progress through the grades.” “I think she’d be my best of the day, but the rest are all good place chances too.” Butcher also drives Trippy Tyron – R1, Victor Bravo – R3, and Beta Prepare – R6. Jockey Kendrick Carmouche notched his 4,000th career victory on Saturday at Aqueduct Racetrack, guiding Whisper Hill Farm's Crimson Light (City of Light) to a half-length victory in the eighth race. Carmouche, a 41-year-old native of Vinton, Louisiana, engineered a pace-pressing trip for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. Crimson Light dropped back to third at the stretch call, but Carmouche persevered aboard the colt to overtake the leaders and deliver the signature score. A smiling Carmouche celebrated the win with the Big A faithful, who flocked to the apron to cheer on the veteran rider. “It's a joy,” said Carmouche. “It's like when you see the park for the first time as a kid and you just want to go run and try every machine. Queen Maxima (Bucchero) validated odds of 1-5 in Saturday's GIII Monrovia Stakes down the hill at Santa Anita, winning for the fourth time in succession and for the fifth time in her eight career starts. Making her graded stakes debut following a facile success in the restricted Wishing Well Stakes over the flat six-furlong course on Feb. 22, the $40,000 OBS June graduate was last to load and first out of the gates and, having shown versatility in terms of running style, was allowed to make the running beneath leading jockey Juan Hernandez. Always going comfortably on the engine through a manageable opening quarter in :22.58, the chestnut filly was under a tight hold while making the dirt crossing with under a quarter-mile to race. Given her cue when linking back up with the turf, she quickened up impressively, as is her custom, and pulled readily clear. The comebacking Queen of the Mud (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) ran on gamely for second. “I can't say that she has surprised me,” said trainer Jeff Mullins, saddling the 1800th winner of his career. “She has kind of lived up to our expectations and I'm not sure that we have seen the most of her yet.” A smashing debut winner at Del Mar last August, Queen Maxima was tagged on the wire of a Nov. 24 allowance at the seaside oval, but put allowance victories back-to-back before stamping her authority on the Wishing Well last time. Heavily favored Tenma (Nyquist) solidified her status as the West Coast's leading GI Kentucky Oaks contender with an easy victory in the GII Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita Oaks Saturday in Arcadia. Sent off at 1-5 in her first start since a romping win in the Feb. 2 GIII Las Virgenes Stakes, the dark bay filly was away well and was taken in hand to sit a stalking trip as stablemate Silent Law (Tiz the Law) exchanged blows with No Bad Beats (Midnight Storm) through an opening quarter in :22.85 before taking a clear lead as the half went up in :46.38. Vodka with a Twist (Thousand Words) moved to challenge the pacesetter into the far turn with Tenma a menacing presence just to her outside with a three-wide rally of her own. Tenma took a slim lead at the top of the lane and, while Silent Law boxed on gamely, the favorite proved too much, skipping away late to win by 2 1/4 lengths. Vodka With a Twist, who was making her first start since finishing second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies last November, was another six lengths back in third. “I was having a beautiful trip, and I asked her to run at the three-eighths pole because she was getting a little lazy on me,” said winning jockey Juan Hernandez. “But that's the way she is, she takes a couple strides to get going. Around the turn, when I was ready to start making my move and pass Silent Law, she was really brave.” Trainer Bob Baffert said he was pleased with the progress the winner has made with each start. “We are trying to get her to the Kentucky Oaks and she had been progressing, getting better and better,” Baffert said of the winner. “I liked the way she settled today. There was a lot of speed in the race. She is becoming more professional as we go. She has come a long way and she is great to be around. She is a lovely filly. It's pretty exciting to run one-two in a stake like this.” Of Silent Law, who was making her first start beyond seven furlongs, Baffert added, “I wanted to stretch her out and it was the only opportunity I'd get. We were experimenting to see how she handled it, and she handled it really well. It is nice when it all works out.” Tenma, a debut winner at Del Mar last August, just nosed out Vodka With a Twist to win the GI Del Mar Debutante in her second start. She suffered her first loss when third in the GII Oak Leaf Stakes in October, but came back to end her juvenile campaign with a win in the Dec. 7 GII Starlet Stakes in December. She opened her sophomore campaign with a 6 1/2-length score in the Las Virgenes. “She just didn't run in the Oak Leaf. It was a dud,” Baffert said. “She struggled that day, just not mentally ready. I backed off of her after that, freshened her, and she's been ready to go.” Pedigree Notes: Breeder Bobby Flay purchased Amagansett as a yearling for $875,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale.
