Allan Sharrock has designs on another feature prize for Islington Lass (NZ) (Proisir) before her season draws to a close, with Saturday’s Wanganui meeting a key lead-in to the Gr.2 Travis Stakes (2000m) later this month. The six-year-old by Proisir continued to add to a phenomenal race-record in the early summer, winning the Gr.3 Manawatu Cup (2300m) over Wolfgang (NZ) (Puccini) and Whangaehu (NZ) (Proisir), a pair who have gone on to win Group races in their own right. Whangaehu’s victory came in the Gr.3 Trentham Stakes (2100m), where Islington Lass finished fifth before heading to the paddock. “She had three weeks off and worked around the farm for a couple of weeks,” said Allan Sharrock, who trains the mare at New Plymouth. “She’s come back and had a jump-out at Hawera where she went nicely, I think she’ll need the run on Saturday, but it’ll give us a leg up to the Travis Stakes, that is her first serious goal. “Taking four kilos off will make it easier for her on Saturday and hopefully she can go a nice race for us.” Islington Lass will be partnered by Sharrock’s apprentice Sima Mxothwa in the Wanganui-Taranaki Racehorse Owners Association Open (1600m), where she will carry a luxury of 55.5kg as a 99-rated galloper. Beyond Saturday’s contest, Sharrock will look to Te Rapa on April 26 for the fillies and mares feature, but that will likely be the top of her distance range this preparation. “The only race that would be an option over that (Manawatu Cup) distance is the Rotorua Cup (Listed), so I think we’ll stay around a mile and 2000m with her,” he said. “She won’t have many more starts before going out, and we’ll set her for some good targets in the spring again.” Earlier on the card, well-related filly Shacktime (NZ) (Tivaci) will contest in the Manawatu Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Association 3YO (1350m). The daughter of Tivaci is a half-sister to Kawi, a former superstar of the Sharrock stable who won seven Group Ones in his career. While her relation holds a big reputation, Shacktime has earned admirers in the early stages of her career, winning at start two before a big run for fifth behind Archaic Smile at New Plymouth last time out. “She went awesome last time, she missed the start by seven lengths and produced at the 300 like the winner, then peaked on her run which was understandable,” Sharrock said. “She’s worked super and is a nice filly too, I’ve got a bit of time for her. “I expect her to race well, there is a bit of ability in that race but she’ll compete really well.” The impending rain at Wanganui could have a part to play in Tavi Ann’s chances, with the mare set to take her place in the final event of the day over the middle-distance trip. “I’m not convinced she’s a 2000m mare, but I am convinced that she likes Wanganui, so it depends on how much rain we get and how arduous that 2000m becomes for her,” Sharrock said. “There were no 75 miles in the CD that I could see, so we really had no option but to go 2000m. “Shacktime is in race one and Islington Lass can handle the cut out of the track, I’m just a bit worried about the last race.” Sharrock also has a pair of runners heading to Waverley on Friday, including a booming last-start maiden winner in El Jaycee. Mxothwa will retain the ride, bringing her impost down to 53kg in the Good Luck Team Wanganui At Halberg Games (1400m). “I think the application of blinkers made a big difference, she just ran them into the ground,” Sharrock said. “It’s the same for Waverley by the last race, whether it gets too ardous for her, that’s something we will assess. They will possibly not be getting the rain that we’re getting in New Plymouth, let’s hope not.” Preferment gelding Smartroad (NZ) (Preferment) is also expected to be among the better chances in the Whangaehu/Humphrey and Fiona O’Leary (2200m), with Lemmy Douglas in the saddle for the highweight contest. “He went a good race last start and going up in distance, I expect him to be an each-way play as well,” Sharrock said. Things haven’t gone quite to plan with Mustang Morgan (NZ) (Preferment) in the Australian leg of his preparation, but trainer Andrew Forsman is hopeful of a bold showing in Saturday’s Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick nonetheless. Following his fourth placing in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) behind Willydoit (NZ) (Tarzino) last month, Mustang Morgan flew to Sydney with the plan of running in the Gr.2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill last Saturday, a race Forsman has had plenty of success in the past, winning two editions (Jon Snow in 2017 and Quick Thinker in 2020) when training in partnership with Murray Baker. However, those plans were unfoiled with wet weather in Sydney, which led to his withdrawal from the race and its subsequent transfer to Tuesday, which Forsman felt would have been too tight of a turnaround ahead of Saturday’s Derby. While unable to get an Australian run into his charge ahead of the Derby, Forsman has been pleased with Mustang Morgan’s work ahead of the weekend and said he has him as fit as he can ahead of the elite-level assignment. “It hasn’t gone to plan. We did really want to have that run last Saturday but couldn’t really risk running him on a Heavy track,” Forsman said. “As it happened, it would have been an even shorter back-up and still quite a testing track at Rosehill. “It’s not how we wanted it to unfold but we have put as much work into him as we can.” Mustang Morgan will jump from barrier 12 on Saturday, with Craig Williams aboard, and TAB bookmakers currently rate him a $41 winning chance in a market headed by Aeliana at $3.30, while New Zealand Derby hero Willydoit is the second elect at $3.70. “The draw is not ideal, a bit closer to the rail would have been nice, but we are hoping we can get a similar beginning to the New Zealand Derby, work across and put himself in a forward position,” Forsman said. “He (Craig Williams) is a big-race jockey, so I am sure he has got a plan in-mind.” Forsman will also head to Randwick with staying mare Positivity (NZ) (Almanzor), who will contest the Gr.2 Chairman’s Quality (2600m). The Ben Kwok-raced four-year-old has drawn barrier 15 for Saturday’s contest, continuing a frustrating run of draws across the Tasman. “She has just had no luck at all with wide draws this preparation. She was four wide with no cover last start and she has drawn pretty poorly again this weekend,” Forsman said. “But up to 2600m should suit and hopefully she gets a bit of luck in the run this time.” Positivity is out of favour with the bookies, currently sitting at $61 with the TAB, with the market dominated by the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Alalcance at $2.80. Roselyn’s Star, who was well-backed before the jump, looked a threat turning for home but couldn’t match the favourite’s acceleration, finishing three lengths adrift in second for trainer John O’Shea. 2023: Libertad rallies late Libertad made a stunning leap from maiden class to Group success, taking out the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) in the opening race of The Championships at Randwick. Just 10 days after a dominant debut win at the same track, the Russian Revolution colt backed it up in tougher company, defying concerns from his trainer and jockey about the conditions to produce another polished performance. With Introducing gradually working across to lead the field, Libertad was settled close to the rails by jockey Chad Schofield. As the field peeled off the fence in the straight, Schofield took advantage of the gap opening along the inside. Saltaire surged to the front at the 150m mark, putting half a length on his rivals, but Libertad responded bravely when asked, rallying strongly to reel in the leader and score by a narrow half-head margin. 2022: Pike lifts Semillion to victory The Championships for 2022 got underway at Royal Randwick with Semillion justifying his favouritism, holding off late challengers to win the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m). Sent out as the $3.40 favourite, the two-year-old colt by Shalaa delivered for punters with a determined performance under star jockey William Pike. Former Victorian jockey Michael Poy. (Ross Holburt/Racing Photos) Former jockey Michael Poy has been banned from racing for 13 years and six months after the Victorian Racing Tribunal found him guilty of illegal betting conduct that struck at the heart of the sport’s integrity. The hefty disqualification was handed down on Thursday, with VRT chairman Judge John Bowman describing Poy’s actions as tantamount to “race result fixing” and warning of the serious damage such conduct can inflict on public trust in racing. “You willfully engaged in behaviour that strikes at the very heart of the racing industry,” Judge Bowman said. “Conduct such as yours has the capacity to inflict great damage upon the image of racing and public confidence in its integrity.” Poy, a former apprentice jockey, faced eight serious charges stemming from a scheme between April and August 2022 in which he conspired with punter Noah Brash to lay losing bets against his own mounts – and on those of fellow jockey Lewis German – via encrypted messages. Staggeringly, all 46 of the lay bets placed against Poy’s rides during the period were successful. The tribunal accepted a psychologist’s report outlining Poy’s mental health challenges, which it said left him vulnerable to external influence. However, Judge Bowman made it clear that the severity of the offences demanded a punishment that would act as a deterrent. “You were not a puppet on a string,” he said. Poy becomes the final figure to be penalised in the betting ring scandal, which also saw German disqualified for 10 years, Brash warned off for 10 years, and another punter, Jacob Foltyowizc, also banned. Racing Victoria stewards had pushed for a 20-year disqualification, but the tribunal settled on the 13.5-year term for the most serious charge, with all lesser penalties to be served concurrently. The BGP are co-owners of the slot which Miracle Mile winner Don Hugo will race in at Cambridge tomorrow night and they also have one of their famous punters’ clubs running at the meeting. They placed their first bet on their own horse on Wednesday night when having $40,000 to win on Don Hugo at the boosted price of $3, a BGP spokesman saying they expect him to start far closer to $2 at race time. Their mega bet aside the market for the Betcha remained rock solid after opening whereas favouritism has yo-yoed for the $600,000 TAB Trot. Oscar Bonavena opened favourite before being replaced by The Locomotive before the pair levelled up at $2.90 equal favourites last night. The TAB will open a plethora of options for the two slot races including the popular early crow option on who will lead each race after 200m. Kiwis looking to launch late in $1m The Race by betcha By Michael Guerin The biggest local players in tomorrow night’s $1m Race by Betcha are hoping a bareknuckle brawl between two Aussies ends with a Kiwi being the last horse standing. The Australian pair of Don Hugo and Leap To Fame dominate the market for the 2200m mobile slot race, as they should, being winners of the last two Inter Dominions and Miracle Miles. They arrive in New Zealand, both for their debuts here, at a time of unprecedented superiority by the Australians over the locals, with Swayzee winning the last two New Zealand Cups and Bettor Eclipse the Auckland Cup last year. With Don Hugo drawn barrier 2 tomorrow night and Leap To Fame not so well placed at barrier 7 (after the emergency comes out) but still certain to roll forward, smart money would be on the Australians being leader and parked out a lap from home on the 1000m track. Then the Kiwis have to hope the Aussies, particularly Grant Dixon driving Leap To Fame, empty the tank. Don Hugo was too slick for Leap To Fame under similar circumstances in the Miracle Mile a month ago and Dixon admits he might have been better applying more mid-race pressure, especially as Leap To Fame was coming back at Don Hugo hard again at the line. If Dixon tries to take the sprint out of Don Hugo, and that is a lot of sprint, then both could be left vulnerable to a high-class rival with fresh legs and full lungs. Best placed to fill that role could be Merlin or Don’t Stop Dreaming, who quinellaed an easier version of this race last year. On that occasion Merlin worked forward from barrier 5 (he starts from 6 tomorrow), sat parked, took the one-one sit and roared past Don’t Stop Dreaming late. Co-trainer Barry Purdon suggests a similar run on Friday would be ideal, working forward early to sit on the back of Leap To Fame if and when he ends up parked. The only problem is, Merlin would then have to have run past both Don Hugo and Leap To Fame, who are better than the rivals he ran past last year. “It will be up to Zac [Butcher, driver] but I’d see that as his best chance of winning,” says Purdon, who with Scott Phelan also has Duchess Megxit in the race and drawn to trail. If the two up front really undo themselves then Merlin could defend his title and another trainer who wouldn’t mind that script being written but with a different final chapter is Hayden Cullen. He and wife Amanda have recently taken over training Don’t Stop Dreaming and last year’s runner-up was dazzling winning at Alexandra Park last start. After studying the draws and modus operandi of the main players Cullen can see his charge being on the back of Merlin or less likely Leap To Fame and waiting to swoop. “I think that is how he is best placed, following a hot speed and launching late,” says Cullen. “I am not saying it will be easy to do but it is still his best chance. “He is working well, his feet which have sometimes troubled him in the past are good, so he will race well.” The pair may not be the only local winning chances, with Republican Party (Auckland Cup) and Chase A Dream (just last week in the Flying Mile) having shown they can boom home under the right circumstances. What Cranbourne Races Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977 When Friday, April 4, 2025 First Race 5:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble Cranbourne Turf Club is the destination for Friday night racing in Victoria, where a competitive eight-race meeting is set down for decision. The track was rated a Good 4 at the time of acceptances, but with showers forecast a Soft 5 or 6 track seems the likely rating for the program. The rail comes out 9m for the entire circuit, with the first race set to jump at 5:15pm AEDT. Despite drawing barrier 14, the colt remains the favourite, with O’Shea confident in his preparation. “The things we can control we have under control,” said O’Shea, who trains in partnership with Tom Charlton. “He is a very fit, healthy horse. Whether we’re good enough, we’re going to determine that on Saturday. The preparation has gone exactly how we have wanted. He will have a couple of nice easy days going into the race on Saturday. “The horse is in great form, the rider (Zac Lloyd) is in great form and the stable is very relaxed with his preparation.” The key question is how Linebacker will fare against older rivals, but with just 49kg on his back compared to Another Wil’s topweight of 56.5kg, O’Shea is eager to find out. “It’s a matter of analysing how he lines up against what was a very strong George Ryder Stakes and a very strong All-Star Mile. “Those horses are probably weighted up to their best in a Doncaster, so we’re probably going to have to utilise our weight advantage and hopefully get a position in the running that gives us a chance to be in the finish,” he said. She just needs a couple of little things to go her way. “She’s shown she can mix it with the best of them already, it’s just who gets the right run on the day. Shanwah’s Derby campaign mirrors that of Maher-trained runners Global Exchange and Ruthven. Like Shanwah, Global Exchange won the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) and Group 2 Alister Clark (2040m) before finishing sixth in the 2019 Derby, while Ruthven was fourth to Jon Snow two years earlier. “I brought him through the same path as a horse called Global Exchange, who ran sixth. He didn’t handle the wet,” Maher said. “And another horse, Ruthven, ran fourth. I took them through the same path. I think he is better than those horses. Any sort of track wouldn’t worry him. He just keeps stepping up each time he runs.” Maher believes Shanwah has the right blend of class and stamina to win on Saturday and, having begun his career in Sydney, is accustomed to racing in the clockwise direction. “He has been very good his last two and has won by a space both times,” the trainer said. “He has had a prep up here before so he is no stranger to this way of going. Our Jumala (NZ) (Zed) finished runner-up in last year’s running of the Gr.3 intowin.co.nz Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes (2050m), and trainer Robbie Patterson is hoping she can go one better in this year’s edition at Wanganui on Saturday. The daughter of Zed is in a purple patch of form, winning her last two outings, including victory in the Gr.3 Cuddle Stakes (1600m) at Trentham last month. Patterson has been duly pleased with her impressive run of form and is confident of another bold showing this weekend, but she will have to contend with the wet weather bomb that is set to hit much of the country over the coming days. “She has hardened off now, everything is going right for her and hopefully she goes on with it from her last win,” he said. “The field doesn’t look any stronger, so it will just depend on where Wanganui gets at with this weather coming. “If it gets like a real Wanganui wet track it won’t be a great draw (2), she will probably have to drop back and go around them, but she can race wherever you want her.” Further Group targets await Our Jumala post-Saturday, with Patterson eyeing the Gr.2 Travis Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa on April 26, otherwise he will switch his focus to winter racing, with the Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m) at Riccarton the major target. “We might go to the Travis in two weeks, or we could freshen-up and get into winter racing, and I might even target the Winter Cup with her,” he said. “There are plenty of options for her.” Patterson will also head to Wanganui with four-win gelding Ragamuffin (NZ) (Belardo), who will be fresh-up in the Taranaki-Wanganui NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (1350m). “He enjoys a bit of cut out of the ground,” Patterson said. “He had a nice trial last week and he is a horse that has got another win or two in him.” A day prior at Waverley, Patterson will be represented by a quartet of runners and he is particularly upbeat about the chances of Marketa (NZ) (Eminent) in the Kawa Farm 1650, and last-start winner Hot Mama (NZ) (Too Darn Hot) in the Good Luck Team Wanganui At Halberg Games (1400m). “Marketa has been knocking on the door to win a race, and you’re not going to get a much easier race than a maiden high weight,” Patterson said. “Hot Mama is a really nice filly, and she is going to end up quite a nice horse in the future, so I expect her to go well as well.” Meanwhile, Patterson has received positive reports from across the Tasman about his Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) heroine Leica Lucy (NZ) (Derryn), who is set to attempt to double her Oaks tally for new trainer Chris Waller at Randwick next week. “She has gone to Chris Waller’s and he is pretty happy with her, so they have pushed forward and it is looking like she is going to be running in the Australian Oaks (Gr.1, 2400m) on Saturday-week,” Patterson said. “It will be tough, that Treasurethe Moment is a good horse, but so is she.” View the full article

Jun Zhang has been appointed as the new general manager of Yulong, the organisation posted on X early Thursday morning. The announcement follows the news of Vin Cox's resignation just a handful of days previously. Photo: HKJC James McDonald believes Romantic Warrior and Howdeepisyourlove are well positioned to snare Group 1 glory at Meydan on Saturday after the Hong Kong pair drew neutral gates at the official barrier draw on Wednesday. Acclaimed as the LONGINES World’s Best Jockey last year, McDonald will bid to add to his career haul of 114 Group 1 victories after Romantic Warrior drew barrier nine in the Group 1 Dubai Turf (1800m) and Howdeepisyourlove also drew gate nine in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1200m). McDonald will also ride Sword Point, who will jump from gate two in the Group 2 Godolphin Mile (1600m, dirt). The New Zealander said Romantic Warrior had held his form since his narrow defeat in the Group 1 Saudi Cup (1800m, dirt) in February – a performance McDonald said was among the best of the globetrotting champion’s career. “He gave his all. I almost believe it’s almost one of the best performances he’s put on a race track. It’s phenomenal to be almost 10 lengths back to third. To gap the field like that was remarkable and I was so proud of the horse and proud of how Danny has prepped him up and how Danny’s team has looked after him,” McDonald said. “We’re really looking forward to the challenge again. Obviously, he’s been here and competed at a high level before and we’re very much looking forward to the challenge. This race is a very strong race than what he competed in in January here but he’s very good. “It seems like he’s taken no side effects from Saudi, he’s bounced out of it well – all guns blazing really. “He seems to be very happy, healthy and he’s working well. He’s a horse that thrives on high pressure and obviously the tougher the races, the better he goes as we’ve found out over the years. “So, he’ll be up for the challenge again. Obviously, it’s a very competitive race with some very strong contenders and he’ll have to be at his brilliant best but from my point of view, I don’t think he’s taken a backward step from Saudi so hopefully he runs well.” Returning to Dubai for the first time to race since he smashed the track record in winning the Group 1 Jebel Hatta (1800m) in January, Romantic Warrior will face 10 rivals this weekend, including last year’s Dubai Turf winner Facteur Cheval, who jumps from gate 11. “I think if he (Romantic Warrior) runs up to the Jebel Hatta run, he’ll be very hard to beat,” McDonald said. “We’re confident he likes the surface, he’s got round this track beautifully which he normally does anyway. With the 1800m, it’s a long run down the (back) straight. He certainly enjoys the firm surface we’re likely to get on the hot day and he copes with everything pretty well. He’s a well-seasoned horse.” Reflecting on Romantic Warrior’s barrier draw, Shum said: “Gate nine is not a problem. He’s flexible. If he gets a fast pace, (McDonald) can give him a chance to settle. If the race is slow, he can sit close.” Assessing Howdeepisyourlove’s chances, McDonald said: “I’m really looking forward to his race. He’s a really good horse who’s really consistent, so I think that’s a really good thing when travelling. “He doesn’t really run a bad one and he’s competed against the best sprinter in the world at the moment in Ka Ying Rising – obviously, a fair way back behind him, but he’s always second or third duelling it out with Helios Express. “I think that form line is as good as any sprinting form line around. You could safely say if Ka Ying Rising was in this field, he’d be a very short-priced favourite and probably winning by four or five lengths, so we’re in the ballpark and I think he’s a terrific hope.” McDonald starred on his Dubai debut in January with a treble crowned by Romantic Warrior’s record-breaking Jebel Hatta romp. Racing beyond 1800m for the first time after four wins at the city circuit – twice at 1200m and 1650m, trainer Caspar Fownes’ six-year-old showcased ample staying power by producing a neck victory over Fallon (126lb) with jockey Harry Bentley. Settled close to the rear throughout the contest, Bentley swung his mount into clear air with 300m left to run. Angling into the open, the bay overhauled Fallon tenaciously in 2m 14.18s with Charity Gain (121lb) grinding into third a further three lengths away. “Stepping up in distance was a slight question mark. He always finishes his race out so well, so it looked to be suitable.
