Cambridge Stud-owned sprinting mare Joliestar (Zoustar) proved she is among the best of Australia’s sprinters with an outstanding performance to win Saturday’s A$1.5 million Gr.1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington. A regally-bred daughter of Zoustar, Joliestar was purchased for $950,000 by Brendan and Jo Lindsay at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and had already proven herself worthy of that price tag, winning the A$1.5 million Gr.1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) as a three-year-old. Joliestar’s only other start at three was a victory in the Gr.2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m), before returning at four to win the Gr.3 Show County Quality (1200m) and earn herself a slot in the A$20 million The Everest. She went on to finish seventh in the Everest and the A$10 million Golden Eagle (1500m), and after resuming for third in the Gr.2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) last month, her connections and trainer Chris Waller opted to head to Melbourne for the time-honoured feature. The decision turned out to be a masterstroke, with Joliestar jumping cleanly from a middle barrier and finding cover behind Espionage in the early stages. The mare had a wall of horses in front of her at the 300m, but class hoop Damian Lane weaved his way through the pack and once she was in the clear, she never looked in doubt, charging clear from Headwall by over a length. Cambridge Stud’s CEO Henry Plumptre was thrilled with the victory, particularly when reflecting back on the spring period. “We made a conscious decision to have a look at Melbourne for her,” he said. “We thought about it in the spring and looking at the way she won yesterday, we probably should’ve taken her down there after the Everest for the Champions Sprint (Gr.1, 1200m), instead of staying for the Golden Eagle. “We kicked her off in Sydney this time around, she ran well enough to suggest she could run really well in a Newmarket. We were a little bit worried about the weight, she carried 56 kilos which is quite a lot of weight for a mare, but she trialled up the straight 10 days before the race and did so very well. “I think when she’s well and on her game, and she can get the cover that she needs in a race, she can be explosive and that’s pretty much what happened yesterday. “They ran a very good time and the only question you had at the clock tower was whether she was going to get out, but with a top pilot on board in Damian Lane, she did and she put them away in a matter of metres.” Following the race, there was some conversation around the possibility of Joliestar travelling to Royal Ascot, but Plumptre indicated that was unlikely. “It’s a long way to go to Ascot and I’m sure she could run really well there, but it would be difficult to get her back to Australia and have her competitive the following year,” he said. “By then, she’ll be a six-year-old before you really get her going again. If we keep her between Sydney and Melbourne, there’s so much racing for a good sprinting mare like her. “She may have another crack at the Everest, and that wouldn’t be possible if we went to Ascot.” The success has increased Joliestar’s career earnings above A$3.6 million with five victories in 12 starts, a record Plumptre hoped for when Cambridge Stud outlaid nearly seven figures to secure her. “We had several reasons why we went to $950,000 for her, and that’s based on a ratings system which is pretty accurate,” he said. “The higher the rating, the more likely they are to be good. “She was a gorgeous type, she was a complete stand-out. Earlier on in 2018, we had missed Probabeel at the sales as underbidders and David Ellis bought her, then we bought her after the sale. She was similar, a great type with great pedigree and a high rating. “You don’t always get it right, but it’s great when it does happen.” View the full article

Te Akau Racing commenced Ellerslie’s inaugural Champions Day in the best possible fashion, with progressive mare Francee (NZ) Iffraaj) winning the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Final (1400m). Carrying the silks of Haunui Farm, Francee had been out of the winner’s circle since Boxing Day in 2023, but had been knocking on the door in recent runs and was among the chances in an even market for the $120,000 contest. Jumping from an outside gate, jockey Craig Grylls eased Francee near the tail of the field early and she raced wide through the mid-stages. Getting on the three-wide train behind Pax Mundi, Francee began to slide forward at the 800m and was gaining momentum into the straight, finding a good kick at the 100m to get over the top of Sexy And I Moet and She’s Untouchable right on the line. “She took a while to wind up, but once she changed legs, I was fairly confident I had them covered,” Grylls said. “It was a pretty tough effort. “The plan worked out really well from the draw. Mark (Walker, co-trainer) said to me if you can be three-wide with cover without getting too far back. We got a lovely track into it and she did the rest. “It’s great to get first blood on a day like today and the track is beautiful.” Walker, who trains Francee in partnership with Sam Bergerson, was thrilled for connections, who earned a $70,000 Pearl Series bonus in addition to the $69,000 winner’s prize. “It was great for the Chitty family, Mark and Sarah, and Caroline and Ryan,” he said. “They had all of their family there, so it was very special to see the excitement on their faces. “She’s been very unlucky so she deserved the win. “We actually had her in at Matamata last Saturday, but she drew the outside, so Sam (Bergerson) and Mark (Chitty) hatched a plan to head towards this race. It all worked out very well.” A mare by Iffraaj, Francee was bred by Haunui and BF Bloodstock, as the final foal out of a 10-win mare Calveen. A serious talent on the track, among Calveen’s victories were the Gr.1 Easter Handicap (1600m), Gr.2 Japan Trophy (1600m), Gr.2 Travis Stakes (2000m) and Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m). She also placed in the Gr.1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield. Francee’s success commenced what was a monumental day for Te Akau, with the stable going on to win the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) with Return To Conquer (Snitzel), and the showpiece, the $3.5 million The NZB Kiwi (1500m) with star filly Damask Rose (NZ) (Savabeel). “It was a terrific day, and great for New Zealand racing,” Walker said. “You can’t underestimate the impact of Entain, it was Lachlan Fitt and Cam Rodger’s last day yesterday and they’ve made an incredible impact. You never would’ve thought three or four years ago that this would be possible, so it’s exciting for everyone.” View the full article

What Adelaide Cup Day 2025 Where Morphettville Racecourse – 79 Morphett Road, Morphettville, SA 5043 When Monday, March 10, 2025 First Race 12:30pm ACDT Visit Dabble The time-honoured Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) headlines what is a stacked nine-race meeting out of Morphettville on Monday afternoon. Aided by several black-type events in the second half of the event, which is set to be run under clear skies and on a Good 4 surface. The rail will be back in its true position, with Adelaide Cup Day 2025 set to commence at 12:30pm ACDT. Adelaide Cup Tip: Goldenstatewarrior Goldenstatewarrior is a tough commodity to back some day, but his last three runs suggest the penny may have dropped. A winner of three races from 13 starts, the son of Golden Horn was an eye-catching winner three runs back at Geelong and has since run on strongly in both of his last two starts. He put in a brilliant Adelaide Cup trial in the traditional lead-up, the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m), when beaten a length after being forced to sustain a long run 800m out from home. He was beaten a length that day, and considering he drops 3kg and gains the services of Michael Dee on Monday, if Goldenstatewarrior can be held up for the last crack at the leaders, he looks the one to beat in the 2025 Adelaide Cup. Next Best Race 7 – #10 Goldenstatewarrior (8) 5yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Michael Dee (53kg) CS Hayes Memorial Cup Tip: Elphinstone Elphinestone will likely enjoy stepping back to Listed company after a tough run in the Group 3 JRA Plate (1600m) when beaten 3.9 lengths behind Duke De Sessa. The four-year-old mare was caught wide the trip and did box on nicely to suggest with a smoother run in transit from barrier four on Monday, she will be hard to beat. Prior to that effort, she strung together consecutive victories, including when beating the in-form Smokin’ Princess at Pakenham three runs back. With a touch of luck in the home straight, Elphinstone should prove too hard to hold out and justify her favouritism with horse racing bookmakers. CS Hayes Memorial Cup Race 5 – #3 Elphinstone (4) 4yo Mare | T: Tony & Calvin McEvoy | J: Jamie Melham (54kg) Morphettville Guineas Tip: Macedon Rose Macedon Rose wasn’t disgraced when finishing midfield in the Listed Desirable Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on February 15, and she is a filly who looks like she will appreciate the step up to the 1600m on Monday. She was only getting warm late last time out and finished 2.5 lengths off Sneaky Sunrise, who has since placed in Group 2 company. This looks a bit easier than the Desirable, and if Blake Shinn can find a bum to follow into the race approaching the home turn, Macedon Rose looks to be blessed with a strong finish and will be hard to hold out in the 2025 Morphettville Guineas. Morphettville Guineas Race 6 – #10 Macedon Rose (13) 3yo Filly | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Blake Shinn (55.5kg) Manihi Classic Tip: Taunting Taunting could not have been any more impressive when winning the Listed City Of Marion Stakes (1200m) and as he steps back to the 1100m, he looks hard to beat despite needing to lug 59.5kg. Barrier 12 will be offset by his want to roll forward and take up the running, and considering the 1100m is arguably his preferred distance, he will have his rivals chasing a long way out. The big weight will mean the final 50m will be a bit of a worry, but with a bit of luck, Taunting would have run his rivals ragged by then. Manihi Classic Race 8 – #1 Taunting (12) 6yo Gelding | T: Michael Hickmott | J: Jessica Tzaferis (59.5kg) Best Bet at Morphettville: Steel Tsunami Steel Tsunami has put together a couple of gritty victories over the 1050m and 1000m here, and based on how he won last time out over the 1050m, the 1100m will be no issue. He is a natural frontrunner, so Rochelle Milnes’ 1.5kg claim will come in handy with the pair looking to cross the field from barrier 11 to take up the running, or at worst, land outside the lead. Milnes will look to up the pressure on the home turn, and with winning form on his side and a tactical advantage over some of his rivals, Steel Tsunami looks hard to run down. Best Bet Race 2 – #2 Steel Tsunami (11) 3yo Gelding | T: Will Clarken & Niki O’Shea | J: Rochelle Milnes (a1.5) (58kg) Monday quaddie tips for Morphettville Morphettville quadrella selections Monday, March 10, 2024 1-10 1-2-4-5-7-8-10 1-4-8-10 1-3-9-12 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

King Of Pop photo: Bradley Photos King Of Pop showcased his class with a hard-fought victory in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) on Sunday, March 9 at Canberra. Trained by Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou and ridden by Zac Lloyd, the promising colt made it three wins from three starts, prevailing in a thrilling battle down the home straight. Jumping well from barrier four, King Of Pop settled just behind early leader Farcited, who set a strong tempo after winning the Black Opal Preview. Steel Knight and Nashville Jack were prominent, while Sanctified and Nordic Viking settled further back in the field. Turning for home, Farcited still had a clear advantage, but King Of Pop was quick to pounce under the urgings of Lloyd. King Of Pop dug deep to edge ahead in the final strides, scoring by 0.29 lengths at $3.90 odds with the top horse racing bookmakers. 2025 Group 3 Black Opal Stakes Race Replay – King Of Pop https://horsebetting.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Canberra-2025-Group-3-Black-Opal-Stakes-09032025-King-Of-Pop-Gerald-Ryan-Sterling-Alexiou-Zac-Lloyd.mp4 Lloyd, who was riding in the Black Opal for the first time, was thrilled with the performance. “That leader won the Preview really well, so we knew he could sustain a strong gallop. My bloke was very sharp, though. He executed the race well, jumped well, travelled nicely, and really lifted when it mattered. He’s still learning, but he’s a very nice horse going forward.” The win gave Gerald Ryan his fourth Black Opal success, adding to his victories with Paint (1996), Lucky Raquie (2014), and Trapeze Artist (2017). “I think he’s up there with any of them at this stage. He’s only had two starts and is still putting it all together. I’ve always had him down as a Golden Slipper horse, but we’ll have to see if he’s got enough prize money to make the field.” The $800,000 yearling purchase from Northstead Farm has now won both career starts, with $286,150 in prize money. Ryan also praised his other runner, Sanctified, who charged home late for third. “Sanctified was never even coming here until last Saturday, but he worked so well, we thought why not have a crack. He ran huge.” With the Golden Slipper only two weeks away and having him priced as a $21 chance, connections will now weigh up King Of Pop’s next steps, with Sydney’s premier juvenile races firmly in sight. Snow In May wins the Listed Canberra Guineas. Photo: Bradley Photos Snow In May continued her rise through the ranks with an impressive victory in the Listed Canberra Guineas (1400m) on Sunday, March 9 at Canberra. Trained by John O’Shea & Tom Charlton and ridden by Tyler Schiller, the filly overcame a slow start to power home late and claim the $165,000 feature. Jumping awkwardly from barrier five, Snow In May found herself towards the rear of the field early as Shangri La Spring dictated the pace up front. French Ruler and Zounaka also pressed forward, while Schiller remained patient aboard the daughter of The Autumn Sun, settling midfield and threading a passage between runners. Turning for home, Shangri La Spring was still in control, but Snow In May was beginning to unwind with a powerful surge. Once clear, she quickly reeled in the leader and, despite French Ruler closing late, held on to claim the Listed Canberra Guineas as the $2.70 bookmaker favourite. 2025 Canberra Guineas Race Replay – Snow In May https://horsebetting.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Canberra-2025-Listed-Canberra-Guineas-09032025-Snow-In-May-John-OShea-Tom-Charlton-Tyler-Schiller.mp4 Schiller was pleased to see the filly return to winning form. “Probably a touch weaker grade than what she’s been in against Lady Shenandoah and that. She’s been matching them well, but good to see her come back, strike well, and she executed everything really well.” He admitted she was forced to make her run a little earlier than ideal. “I had to expose her too soon when I got the gap. If I didn’t take it, I feel like it would have disappeared before I got there. So I took the gap, and she was probably just a touch soft late. But I also think she’s got that really sharp 200, and she’s probably a bit better held up for another hundred meters.” The victory adds another feature race to Snow In May’s growing resume, which now includes four wins from seven starts and career earnings of $383,400. Schiller is confident the stable has her on the right path. “The way John’s training, I think they’re in great form, and hopefully, they can keep going forward with this filly.” The stable will now assess Snow In May’s next steps, with currently having her priced at $26 odds to claim the Group 1 Coolmore Classic on March 15. By Jonny Turner Chelsea Faithful took her training career to another level when Ideal Crown dug in to win the Group 3 Caduceus Club and Alabar Fillies Classic at Ascot Park on Saturday. Both horse and trainer were having their first starts in Group company and for Ideal Crown it was her first test of any kind under the pressures of raceday. And amid a highly competitive feature event, both Ideal Crown and Faithful produced the perfect result. “It is unreal, it was sort of a dream and for it to come off is unreal,” the trainer said. “To do it with my first Group race starter is even better.” “This filly has been an absolute beauty from the word go.” “I couldn’t be more proud of her.” A big group of happy owners met Faithful and their classy filly in the winner’s circle after their victory on Saturday. The group is made up of many owners who have raced horses with Faithful in the past, plus some new faces. “I bought her from the weanling sales and ended up syndicating her out,” Faithful said. “I had a few loyal owners who jumped in from old racehorses that decided to come in on a new one.” “And a few new owners came in as well.” “This is a great wee boost for them.” Faithful has taken a patient approach with Ideal Crown as she has built towards her first start. The filly wasn’t rushed in any of her trials, with the trainer and driver Craig Ferguson saving it until race day to unleash the filly’s full potential. “Early on when I broke her in she was a wee bit hot,” Faithful said. “So, I wanted to keep a lid on her a bit.” “I have been like that the whole way through with her.” “In her trials, we never pulled the plugs.” “But I bought her here (to Ascot Park) for a private run and Craig drove her and he pulled the plugs for the first time and she sprinted up nicely.” Ferguson also handled Ideal Crown patiently early in Saturday’s feature as the three favourites Bettor Belle, Princess Macandrew and Mamas Crunch each took turns at leading. Last at the 400m, Ferguson picked a path along the inner for Ideal Crown who dug in to score at the end of a stirring home straight battle with runner-up Bettor Belle. “At the 800m it didn’t look like the best of drives but things panned out,” Ferguson said. “To her credit, she is a speedy wee thing, she really had to dig in for the fight.” Bettor Belle lost no admirers when coming wide and only going down by a head in testing conditions. Saturday marked the final day of under-tack previews for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and a colt by Gun Runner (hip 654) set the bar within the first six hips of the day with the sales co-fastest time, breezing an eighth in a swift :9 3/5. The grey or roan colt, consigned by Eddie Woods, agent, was a $200,000 Keeneland September grad for St. Clair Stables last year. He is the first foal out of Tynan, a winning daughter of Liam's Map who is a half to GSW/MGISP and Walmac stallion Pappacap (Gun Runner) and GSW Boppy O (Bolt d'Oro). The dam received a timely pedigree update when another half-brother, $650,000 FTSAUG buy Our Souper Hero (War Of Will), just missed by a half-length in a well-met debut at Gulfstream Park Friday. “He worked exceptionally well,” said Woods after the breeze. “We thought he'd go really good anyway, and he may [have] over achieved a little bit even. He's a stylish, good-looking horse. He's been very straightforward all winter. Very quiet, laid back horse and all class.” Woods acknowledged that the market for classy sons of Gun Runner would be hot anywhere the colt went. “We could've brought him anywhere,” he said. “March is a great sale–may as well have him here.” :9.3 speed from a Gun Runner is…exciting Has the pedigree to be an outstanding 2yo: o/o Liam's Map 1/2-sis to the G2SW and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up PAPPACAP (also by Gun Runner), as well as the G3-winning 2yo BOPPY O@eddiewoods2yos @OBSSales @Three_Chimneys pic.twitter.com/iizdhZWi8e — Lucas Marquardt (@ThoroStride) March 8, 2025 Breezing early in the session seemed advantageous, though the weather was not nearly as much of a hindrance Saturday as it was Thursday. “Conditions were really good today,” Woods continued. “We had one little squall of rain come through in the third session which upped the wind a little bit but other than that, it's been quite good.” With OBS March giving buyers their first look at freshman sires, Woods's consignment also includes a son of Independence Hall (hip 404) who took advantage of more favorable conditions Friday to work in :9 4/5. He's also represented by a daughter of Yaupon (hip 315) who worked a quarter-mile in :21 Friday and a son of Maxfield (hip 669) who breezed the same distance Saturday in :21 2/5. “Among the freshman [in my consignment], it's Independence Hall. My Yaupon is quite nice but there seems plenty of nice ones around. I also think the Maxfields are going to be nice.” Behind the Gun Runner colt, a total of 14 runners worked their furlong in :9 4/5 including colts by the aforementioned Maxfield (hips 672 and 721) and Yaupon (716). A More Than Ready colt (hip 757) who is a full-brother to Eclipse champion turf female Rushing Fall, also matched the :9 4/5 time. A pair of fillies shared the fastest quarter-mile Saturday. A filly from the first crop of Charlatan (hip 601) out of GISP Sweet Shirley Mae worked in :20 2/5 along with a filly by Aurelius Maximus (hip 619). The March Sale will be held over the course of three sessions and kicks off Tuesday, Mar. 11, running through Thursday, Mar. 13. After running too good to lose when going down to a narrow defeat at the hands of John Hancock (Constitution) in the Sam F. Davis Stakes when last seen, OWEN ALMIGHTY (c, 3, Speightstown–Tempers Rising, by Bayern) was kicked straight into the lead from his rail draw in Saturday's GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby, controlled the pace through even sectional times and ran away from his half-dozen rivals in the final furlong to earn 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The third choice at 29-10 to the comebacking 'TDN Rising Star' Chancer McPatrick (McKinzie) and outposted 'Rising Star' Patch Adams (Into Mischief), the $360,000 Keeneland November weanling and $350,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling was in front soon after the start and made the running in advance of longshot Brodeur (Nyquist) as second favorite Patch Adams was again not the quickest away and was consigned to a three-wide run into the turn. Chancer McPatrick was in the perfect spot as the addition of blinkers had him handy to the pace in the box seat through the opening exchanges. By the first quarter in a moderate :23.84 and the half in a hasslefree :48.16, Owen Almighty put Brodeur away approaching the entrance to the straight, and Chancer McPatrick loomed the only danger if good enough. But instead, Owen Almighty kicked on nicely when asked and was never in danger as the chalk plugged on at one pace into second. Hill Road (Quality Road), making his first start for Chad Brown, rallied from the back of the field to be third, while Patch Adams was a lackluster fourth. The final time for the 8 1/2 furlongs on a fast strip was 1:42.30. According to published reports, Owen Almighty is targeting the GII Pat Day Mile and not the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May. #1 OWEN ALMIGHTY ($7.80) goes gate-to-wire in the $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3) with @iradortiz in the saddle for @BLynchRacing and @flyingdutchky. Add another top 3-year-old filly to the tally for Darley stallion Medaglia d'Oro, who has some good ones on the GI Kentucky Oaks trail this year in Good Cheer and Ballerina d'Oro. They excel on the dirt, but daughter Nitrogen (f, 3, Medaglia d'Oro-Tiffany Case, by Uncle Mo), winner of Saturday's 42nd running of the GIII Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay Downs, is one for the grass. Restrained in a tracking spot throughout the :23.15 and :47.15 early fractions, the D. J. Stable LLC homebred was let loose in the stretch. It took her some time to unfurl her giant stride, but when she did, she chased down pacesetter Lush Lips (GB) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}), collaring her late despite drifting, to win by about a half-length. Nitrogen covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.42. Deloraine (Candy Ride {Arg}) was third, while Opulent Restraint (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) finished fourth. Third in last fall's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, as well as in the GI Natalma Stakes, Nitrogen won her sophomore debut in January's Ginger Brew Stakes at Gulfstream Park. O/B-D. J. Stable LLC (KY); T-Mark Casse; J-Jose Ortiz. #9 NITROGEN ($5.00) sits off the pace with @jose93_ortiz and they fire in time to win the $200,000 Florida Oaks (G3) for trainer @markecasse and owner D.J.
