Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Observations features a full-sister to Classic winner Persian King. 4.05 Deauville, Debutantes, €45,700, 2yo, f, 7 1/2fT TICKLE (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is a key Wertheimer representative in this Prix des Marettes on the first day of Deauville's August Festival, being a full-sister to the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix du Moulin and Prix d'Ispahan-winning sire Persian King, who began his career in the colts' version, the Prix de Crevecoeur, in 2018. Yann Barberot saddles the blueblood, who is joined by the operation's Lefteye (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), an Andre Fabre-trained daughter of the Vermeille heroine Left Hand (Dubawi). Others to note in the maiden won by Zagora are Al Shaqab, Jean-Claude Seroul and Haras d'Etreham's Mario Baratti-trained Philly Bassett (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), a €420,000 Arqana Deauville August purchase who is a half-sister to the Marcel Boussac heroine Tiger Tanaka (Clodovil); and Craig Bernick's La Carriere (Ire) (No Nay Never), a Francis-Henri Graffard-trained half-sister to the Falmouth winner Prosperous Voyage (Zoffany). 1.56 Deauville, Debutantes, €45,700, 2yo, c/g, 7 1/2fT REGAL RESOLVE (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is another notable by Juddmonte's sire sensation starting out on the opening fixture of Deauville's August Festival, this time in this often-informative card-opening Prix de Crevecoeur won in 2017 by the subsequent Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Olmedo and in which Persian King was second in 2018. Juddmonte's 500,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 relative of the St James's Palace Stakes hero Barney Roy is introduced by Francis-Henri Graffard against Gestut Schlenderhan's Torpedo (Ger) (New Bay {GB}), a Victoria Head-trained half-brother to the Prix de Diane third Tasmania (Australia); Baron Edouard de Rothschild's Too Darn Quick (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), an Andre Fabre-trained half-brother to the Vermeille runner-up Melo Melo (Gleneagles); and the Wertheimers' Elastic (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), a Christophe Ferland-trained half-brother to Siyouni's highly-regarded three-year-old colt Sinileo. Ready to roll in his second career race, Blackout Time (Not This Time–Beauty Parlor, by Elusive Quality) did not disappoint his backers as he ran up the score at Ellis Park on Saturday afternoon and earned himself a shiny new 'TDN Rising Star' for his coat. In his debut at Churchill Downs June 29, the colt was a runner-up to Dazzle d'Oro (Bolt d'Oro) who garnered himself a 'Rising Star' for that effort. Sadly, Dazzle d'Oro had to be humanely euthanized after sustaining a catastrophic injury during training at Saratoga last week. Blackout Time was marked for heavy favoritism here and vied for the top spot with Password (Uncle Mo) up the backstretch. Wearing down his rival around the far turn, the Ken McPeek trainee spun into the lane with a firm grip on the wheel and proceeded to run up the score by 9 3/4 lengths. I Did I Did (Curlin) was the runner-up. 5th-Ellis, $100,000, Msw, 8-2, 2yo, 1m, 1:37.12, ft, 9 3/4 lengths. The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale topper ORNELLAIA (f, 2, Girvin–Scarlet Dixie, by Broken Vow), who skipped over a sloppy track in Maryland to top the sale at $1.1m, came from the clouds Saturday to become the third 'TDN Rising Star' for her sire. Near the back of the field coming around the far turn, the 9-2 shot had to weave her way through traffic going first to the rail at the furlong marker and then angling out wide to nail pacesetter Steer Clear (Street Sense) late for the win. 7th-SAR, $110K, ALW, 3yo/up, 6f, 4:36 p.m. ET. MIDLAND MONEY (Shancelot) was pinned with a 'TDN Rising Star' after the colt won by six lengths to start his career as a juvenile at Santa Anita June 14. Not seen since, the Bob Baffert trainee who shipped from Del Mar is one of seven foals for his dam and her second winner. TJCIS PPS 4th-ELP, $100K, Msw, 2yo, f, 1 1/16mT, 2:16 p.m. ET. Second-time starter DELIGHTFUL CLAIRE (f, 3, Thousand Words–Izshelegal, by Maria's Mon), third in her Churchill Downs debut last month, returned in emphatic fashion Saturday to become the first 'TDN Rising Star' for her young sire. Positioned near the lead in this one-turn seven-furlong affair, the 3-1 favorite had to pull back pacesetter Lost and Found (Liam's Map) but turned for home alone on the lead and turned the stretch run into a parade route to come home an easy, geared-down winner. $2.3m yearling grad Metfardeh (Into Mischief) outran her 7-1 odds to lead the rest of the field in. Sunday, Dusseldorf, Germany, post time: 15:40, 167TH HENKEL-PREIS DER DIANA – GERMAN OAKS-G1, €500,000, 3yo, f, 11fT Field: Garden Of Eden (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), Santagada (GB) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), Spirited Style (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), Lady Charlotte (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), Nicoreni (Ger) (Brametot {Ire}), Nyra (Ger) (Isfahan {Ger}), Innora (Ger) (Lord Of England {Ger}), Lips Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Winnyzja (Ire) (Sottsass {Fr}), Starlight Lips (Ger) (Ghaiyyath {Ire}), Raposa (Ger) (Frankel {GB}), Stugardia (Ger) (Tai Chi {Ger}), Meeresbrise (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), Honeybee (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}). TDN Verdict: Coolmore's G2 Ribblesdale heroine Garden Of Eden and Godolphin's Listed Aphrodite victrix Spirited Style both bid to register a third overseas success in Europe's final G1 Oaks of the season. The former will be partnered by Ryan Moore, who overlooks the stable's runners in France to be on duty here. Lady Charlotte surrendered her unbeaten record when ninth in last month's G1 Deutsches Derby and leads the home defence seeking some measure of compensation. Santagada steps up from the one-mile trip, having won Hamburg's G3 Stuten Meile on Derby Day, while Winnyzja holds claims coming back off a win in Mulheim's Listed Diana Trial. [Sean Cronin] Sunday, Deauville, France, post time: 16:40, PRIX ROTHSCHILD – FONDS EUROPEEN DE L'ELEVAGE-G1, €300,000, 3yo/up, f/m, 8fT Field: Riyabovka (Fr) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), Start Of Day (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Pinta (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), Spiritual (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Crimson Advocate (Nyquist), Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}), Mandanaba (Fr) (Ghaiyyath {Ire}), Exactly (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), January (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), Atsila (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}), Godspeed (Fr) (Hello Youmzain {Fr}), Pina Sonata (GB) (Pinatubo {Ire}), Matilda (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). TDN Verdict: The Gosden stable, which won this in 2012 and 2013 with Elusive Kate, is doubly represented with G2 Duke Of Cambridge winner Crimson Advocate bidding to bounce back off a third in last month's G1 Falmouth at Newmarket. Elusive Kate followed a similar path en route to both successes. Rab Havlin retains the ride aboard stablemate Spiritual, who registered a wide-margin victory in Epsom's G3 Princess Elizabeth on Derby Day when last seen. Coolmore duo January and Exactly have each failed to win in three starts this term and preference is for the former, who hit the board in Royal Ascot's G1 Coronation before finishing ahead of Crimson Advocate when second in the Falmouth. Exactly ran fourth in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, but has something to find coming back off a sixth in the Coronation. Trainer Aidan O'Brien seeks a third win in the contest. The home defence is led by Princess Zahra Aga Khan's Mandanaba, who was a close-up third in the Pouliches before dropping out of the places nearing the line to be fourth in June's G1 Prix de Diane. She will be accompanied by runaway G2 German 2,000 Guineas heroine Matilda, who has joined the Graffard stable since registering that career high. [Sean Cronin] Sunday, Dusseldorf, Germany, post time: 14:22, FRITZ HENKEL-PREIS-G3, €55,000, 3yo/up, 8fT Field: Penalty (Ger) (Frankel {GB}), Best Lightning (Fr) (Sidestep {Aus}), Geography (Ger) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), Aigle Vaillant (Fr) (Wings Of Eagles {Fr}), Glady Tiger (Ger) (Zoffany {Ire}), Next Mine (Ger) (Dabirsim {Fr}). TDN Verdict: The veteran Best Lightning was a half-length too good for Next Mine when successful in June's G3 Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft, but needed every yard of the nine-furlong trip to inch ahead nearing the line in that Dortmund contest. Eckhard Sauren's retained rider Thore Hammer-Hansen keeps faith with the latter over the owner's Penalty and Glady Tiger. Last year's winner Geography tuned up for this with a second in last month's G3 Prix Messidor at Chantilly. [Sean Cronin] Sunday, Deauville, France, post time: 14:31, SKY SPORTS RACING PRIX DE PSYCHE – FONDS EUROPEEN DE L'ELEVAGE-G3, €73,200, 3yo, f, 10fT Field: Zia Agnese (Fr) (Romanised {Ire}), Cankoura (Fr) (Persian King {Ire}), Al Uqda (Ire) (Ghaiyyath {Ire}), Life Is Beautiful (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Safia (Fr) (Sottsass {Fr}), Whataboutism (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), Miss Of Change (Fr) (King Of Change {GB}). TDN Verdict: Alex Pantall trainee and Listed Prix Madame Jean Couturie victrix Al Uqda puts her perfect four-for-four record on the line, but may have to give best to G1 Prix de Diane third Francis Graffard representative Cankoura, who had previously accounted for Ilda Rosa in May's Listed Prix Finlande. TDN Rising Star Safia defeated the same rival in June's Listed Prix Melisande and holds claims on a strict reading of that formline. Just one overseas runner is set to head postward, Lady Bamford's Life Is Beautiful, who was last seen registering a fifth behind G1 Preis der Diana contender Garden Of Eden in Royal Ascot's G2 Ribblesdale. As ever, the Andre Fabre stable merits respect and G3 Prix Chloe fourth Whataboutism cannot be discounted. [Sean Cronin] Sunday, Deauville, France, post time: 17:50, SKY SPORTS RACING PRIX SIX PERFECTIONS – FONDS EUROPEEN DE L'ELEVAGE-G3, €73,200, 2yo, f, 7fT Field: Narissa (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), Clea Chope (Fr) (Muhaarar {GB}), Bandiagara (GB) (Zelzal {Fr}), Secret Hideaway (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Wetsand (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Green Spirit (Kingman {GB}), Balantina (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}), Royal Bay Cen (Ire) (New Bay {GB}). TDN Verdict: The form of this year's G3 Albany Stakes has been received several boosts in the interim and Donnacha O'Brien representative Balantina gets a chance to add further lustre here. She ran third in that Royal Ascot heat and sets the standard. Her rivals include the Aga Khan Studs' once-raced Narissa, who attained TDN Rising Star status with a stunning eight-length victory over this distance at Saint-Cloud in June and rates an obvious danger. The undefeated duo Green Spirit and Wetsand should not be overlooked, while Listed Marygate winner Secret Hideaway steps up in trip coming back off an unplaced effort in Royal Ascot's G2 Queen Mary. [Sean Cronin]. Sunday, Deauville, France, post time: 19:00, PRIX DE CABOURG – FONDS EUROPEEN DE L'ELEVAGE-G3, €73,200, 2yo, 6fT Field: Afjan (Fr) (Mehmas {Ire}), Ikotofetsy (Fr) (Threat {Ire}), Tadej (GB) (Ardad {Ire}), Shiri (Fr) (Mehmas {Ire}), Baileys Encanta (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), Jeudixx (Fr) (Hello Youmzain {Fr}). TDN Verdict: Europe's weekend stakes action concludes with an open renewal of this contest and Archie Watson trainee Tadej is taken to better a sixth in Royal Ascot's G2 Coventry and a third over this trip in Chantilly's G2 Prix Robert Papin last month. He encounters Al Shaqab Racing's G2 Norfolk sixth and Listed Prix Yacowlef second Afjan, who rates as the main danger. Yacowlef third Jeudixx, like Afjan, is upped to six furlongs for the first time, while Francis Graffard representative Shiri is two-for-two after wins at Longchamp and Chantilly and merits respect. 'TDN Rising Star' Ewing (c, 2, Knicks Go–Sassy Ali Joy, by Indian Charlie), a daylight debut winner at the Spa July 5, rushed up to the front from his rail draw after a slow start and never looked back in Saturday's GII Saratoga Special S. The 8-5 second-choice sped through an opening quarter in :22.26 and was challenged by the unbeaten favorite and fellow 'Rising Star' Obliteration (Violence) on the far turn. Ewing had another gear, however, and floated out his rival at the top of the stretch. He opened a two-length advantage at the stretch call and kept on finding to win by a length. “That was kind of crazy,” winning trainer Mark Casse said. “We didn't warm him up so he would kind of get away slow, so he could settle. Jose (Ortiz) said he settled for three strides. He's fast. I always tell them, when the gate opens, it's up to you to decide. He said he broke and took off and he wasn't going to fight him. I was (happy) because I could see that Steve (Asmussen)'s horse (Obliteration) was struggling and I thought that the other thing is that that horse had never had anybody look him in the eye.” As for what's next, Casse added, “Our horse got tired and is going to improve a lot from that, too. I want him to go farther, but what I want and what I get are sometimes different. I'm proud of him today. He showed a lot of guts, and we'll enjoy the victory and figure out the next. I think I'll probably come back with ('TDN Rising Star') Curtain Call (Tiz the Law) in the (GI) Hopeful and I may take this horse and run him at Churchill; probably the Iroquois. You know, he had every right to get beat today. I wheeled him back pretty quick and whatever, but he's an extremely talented horse.” Pedigree Notes: Ewing, a $585,000 OBS April breezer (:10 1/5), becomes the first black-type winner for freshman sire Knicks Go (Paynter). Ewing's dam Sassy Ali Joy, herself a $60,000 OBS April grad, did not make the races, but was responsible for the stakes-placed Tuscan Queen (Street Boss) and was sold for $60,000 in foal to Collected at the 2021 Keeneland November Sale. The mare was barren to Liam's Map for 2024 and was most recently RNA'd on a bid of $22,000 during the 2024 Fasig-Tipton Digital May Sale when offered pregnant to Midshipman. The colt's third dam was a half-sister to the Grade II-placed Banshee Winds (Known Fact), the dam of 1998 champion 3-year-old filly and five-time Grade I winner Banshee Breeze (Unbridled). Deauville's August-long Festival starts on Sunday, with the G1 Prix Rothschild offering a tantalising clash between some of Ballydoyle and Francis-Henri Graffard's leading ladies. The latter gets ready to saddle White Birch Farm's acquisition Matilda (Soldier Hollow) for the first time following her emphatic 6 1/2-length victory against the colts in the German 2,000 Guineas at Cologne in May. She is joined by Princesse Zahra Aga Khan's Mandanaba (Ghaiyyath), who is back at the mile over which she finished third in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches after looking to run out of stamina in the Diane. Aidan O'Brien said after the Falmouth second of January (Kingman) that her time is coming around and she has last year's Prix Marcel Boussac third Exactly (Frankel) to aid her cause, which could be both good and bad news for Wathnan Racing's Duke of Cambridge winner Crimson Advocate (Nyquist), who had to turn around the Falmouth form but who will benefit from a strong pace. Two others to consider are Mary Slack's Wolverhampton and Leicester winner Pina Sonata (Pinatubo) and Peter Bradley's G2 Prix de Sandringham winner Godspeed (Hello Youmzain), but for what its worth six of the last seven winners of this have been favourite. The card's two juvenile Pattern races are the seven-furlong G3 Sky Sports Racing Prix Six Perfections and the G3 Prix de Cabourg over six, with the former hosting the Aga Khan Studs-owned 'TDN Rising Star' Narissa (Siyouni) who opened her account by eight lengths on debut at Saint-Cloud in June. The Wertheimers' Green Spirit (Kingman) is unbeaten in two starts at that track and should make things interesting along with the Weston and Reeves representative Balantina (Ten Sovereigns) who was third in the Albany for Donnacha O'Brien. There is a hot favourite in the Cabourg, with Chauvigny Global Equine's dual winner Shiri (Mehmas) looking to extend the Graffard dominion this year. Garden Of Eden Has Wide Draw To Deal With In The Diana In Dusseldorf's G1 Henkel-Preis der Diana, Ballydoyle's G2 Ribblesdale Stakes winner Garden Of Eden (Saxon Warrior) has to overcome stall 12 but has at least fared better than one of the leading domestic hopes in Gestut Park Wiedingen's Santagada (Soldier Hollow) who is in unlucky 13. Successful in Cologne's G3 Schwarzgold-Rennen and the G3 Hamburger Stuten Meile, the granddaughter of the 2002 Diana heroine Salve Regina and relative of her Deutsches Derby-winning brothers Samum and Schiaperelli has the pedigree to lift off over this extra three furlongs. Godolphin's Spirited Style (Sea The Stars), a daughter of Wild Illusion (Dubawi), comes in off a win in Newmarket's Listed Aphrodite Stakes and has drawn the rail in one, while the G3 Diana-Trial winner Lady Charlotte (Golden Horn) is in stall six back amongst her own sex having finished ninth tackling the colts in the Deutsches Derby last month. Of the live outsiders, Santagada's trainer Peter Schiergen also has Gestut Ebbesloh's intriguing Listed Mulheim Diana Trial scorer Winnyzja (Sottsass) in stall five and Andreas Wohler is represented by Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof's Raposa (Frankel). She booked her ticket by landing this track's Listed Diana Trial last month, but has stall 15 to hinder her chances of providing her trainer with a seventh renewal. CAPITAL PARTNER (c, 2, Kingman {GB}–Blue Waltz {GB}, by Pivotal {GB}) came from well back and closed in a rush to become a new 'TDN Rising Star' for the connections of Klaravich Stables and trainer Chad Brown at Saratoga Saturday. The 9-5 favorite got squeezed back on the run into the first turn and spent most of the race in the second flight while well off the lead of Orbit (Medaglia d'Oro). Still fifth with a lot of ground to make up around the far turn, Flavien Prat swung his mount wide and, with nothing but clear running room in front of him at the furlong pole, Capital Partner came flying late to just nail the dueling pacesetters of British Invasion (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and Orbit in the final strides. Some of the most highly anticipated races during the summer season are the 'baby' races during the boutique meetings at Saratoga and Del Mar and at Ellis Park, which attract its fair share of high-priced juveniles from a variety of top national outfits. 6th-Goodwood, £75,000, Mdn, 8-2, 2yo, c/g, 7fT, 1:26.63, g/s. ISAAC NEWTON (IRE) (c, 2, Camelot {GB}–Etive {SW-Ger & MSP-Fr, $126,693}, by Elusive Quality), a nose shy of stablemate New Zealand (Frankel) when a July 19 debut runner-up over this trip at the Curragh last time, raced in a midfield seventh through halfway here. Urged closer with three furlongs remaining, the 8-13 favourite went third approaching the final furlong and was driven out to prevail by a neck from Evanesco (Too Darn Hot). “He had a very good run the first day at the Curragh and the third horse [Action] has just won at Galway, so the form looked fairly good,” said Ryan Moore. “I suppose seven furlongs on this track was probably not ideal for him, but he did everything right and got into a nice rhythm and stayed going well. He showed a good attitude and he'll continue to improve from race to race.” Isaac Newton, kin to the dam of Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr runner-up Wilderness Girl (No Nay Never), is the latest of nine reported foals and third scorer produced by a stakes-winning daughter of Listed Prix des Sablonnets victrix and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches runner-up Firth Of Lorne (Danehill). Firth Of Lorne is also the dam of multiple Grade I winner Master Of The Seas (Dubawi), stakes-winning G1 St James's Palace Stakes second Latharnach (Iffraaj) and G3 UAE Oaks victrix Falls Of Lora (Street Cry). Falls Of Lora, in turn, is the dam of three black-type winners including multiple Group 1 hero Cascadian (New Approach) and GI Summer Stakes victor Albahr (Dubawi). Falls Of Lora is also kin to the dam of G1 Metropolitan winner Just Fine (Sea The Stars) and last week's G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis hero Tornado Alert (Too Darn Hot). 5th-Galway, €20,000, Mdn, 8-2, 2yo, 8f 73yT, 1:48.69, g/y. ACTION (IRE) (c, 2, Frankel {GB}–Gossamer Wings {MGSP-Eng, SP-Ire}, by Scat Daddy), a half-brother to Galileo's Derby and Irish Derby hero Lambourn, had been third behind stablemates New Zealand and Isaac Newton at The Curragh last month and was sent off the 4-9 favourite to double up after the latter had done the business for the yard at Goodwood in the preceding minutes. Latching straight onto the front from the break, the homebred showed a more generous cruise than his half-sibling and travelled strongly into the short straight as Atlantic Thoroughbreds' newcomer Perisher (Australia) loomed. Kicking away from that Joseph O'Brien trainee close home, he had 1 1/4 lengths to spare at the line as they pulled away from the remainder. With Ryan Moore on duty in Sussex, it was Lambourn's Derby-winning rider Wayne Lordan who was able to enjoy the spin. “Wayne knows the family inside out and they have been very good to him,” stable representative Chris Armstrong said. “He is a smashing colt, he had a lovely run at the Curragh first-time out and just five minutes before this race jumped off, the horse that finished ahead of him won at Goodwood, so I'd say it was a very strong maiden. It was his first time out in front and he was very green and raw but once he asked him, he found the line well. You probably won't see the best of him until he goes up in trip and is now in the mix for something like the Golden Fleece on Champions Weekend and then maybe a Futurity Trophy or another Group One in France. Wayne said once he pulled up, he took one puff, chilled and walked back calmly. He has the right attitude and if he follows in his brother's footsteps he'll be nice.” The winner is the third foal out of the G2 Queen Mary runner-up Gossamer Wings (Scat Daddy), whose flagbearer Lambourn was without anything more than a French provincial Listed win as a juvenile. A full-sister to the Stakes scorer Lavender Chrissie and a half to the GIII Victory Ride Stakes winner Baby J by J Be K, as well as Bernstein's Stakes winner and GI Secretariat Stakes-placed Laureate Conductor, her yearling full-brother to the winner unfortunately died. Spendthrift's cleverly-named TED NOFFEY (c, 2, Into Mischief–Streak of Luck, by Old Fashioned), a $650,000 Keeneland September grad last year, was the quicker of a coupled entry Saturday to become a first-out winner at Saratoga. Positioned beautifully mid pack outside of pacesetting second-time starter Tagermeen (Into Mischief), the 7-2 shot put in a sustained bid, wore that frontrunner down at the quarter pole and pulled away through the final sixteenth to graduate over a closing Criteria (Yaupon). After finishing runner-up to I Am Invincible last season, the tables turned this year. Zoustar was represented by 198 individual winners of 335 races from 375 runners. His progeny earned A$26,318,590 in total prize-money, with 15 individual stakes winners winning a total of 23 stakes races. His standout performer, Joliestar, won the G1 Newmarket Handicap and G1 Kingsford Smith Cup, contributing a substantial A$2,813,500. The late Snitzel, who stood at Arrowfield Stud before he sadly died in June, topped the stakes win count, with 18 progeny combining for 25 black-type victories. Too Darn Hot, based at Darley Australia, followed up his leading First-Season Sire title last year by securing the Champion Second-Season Sire crown. The past few months have been a rollercoaster of emotions for Liliana Solari, Carlos Heller and their team at Don Alberto. In April, the farm's homebred superstar Journalism (Curlin) scored the first of three Grade I victories in the Santa Anita Derby. Three weeks later, his dam Mopotism (Uncle Mo) foaled a picture-perfect Flightline filly. Journalism finished second, first, then second again in the Triple Crown series, taking his ownership group on an unforgettable journey on racing's biggest stage. Then suddenly, the highs gave way to heartbreak when Mopotism passed away from colic complications. Later that same week, Journalism put in a late run to bring home the GI Haskell Stakes. “It's been a lot,” Don Alberto's COO Reed Ringler admitted. “You lose the mare and then you're crying tears of joy and pain in the Haskell winner's circle just a few days later. The mare was so special and her legacy is going to live on through Journalism. The way he has been able to run down these elite-level 3-year-olds on the stage that he's done it on has been a thrill. It has been so gratifying for the farm and everyone that has had their hands on this horse.” This coming week will mark the next chapter of a dramatic story for Don Alberto when Mopotism's yearling filly goes through the ring at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. The daughter of Into Mischief will sell as Hip 165 with Denali Stud during the auction's second session on Tuesday. “From day one we wanted to bring this filly up here and have the opportunity to feature her in this marketplace in Saratoga and see what she could do,” said Ringler. “This filly is one of one. She's well-balanced and well-made. She has filled out and you can see the racehorse starting to come out in her.” Journalism scores in the GI Haskell Stakes | Sarah Andrew The March-foaled yearling is one of just three foals that Mopotism produced after Journalism, along with the Flightline foal and an unraced 2-year-old colt named Nitro Tap (Tapit) who was bought at this sale last year by Flying Dutchmen for $1.5 million. Mopotism herself was a Grade II winner and was four-time Grade I-placed before she was purchased by Don Alberto for $1.05 million in 2019. “This filly certainly reminds us the most of Journalism,” Ringler explained. “You see it in her head and her eye so much. She's such a strong filly. I think actually she's maybe a bit bigger-framed than Journalism at this stage. She covers a lot of ground and is a two-turn type, just like Journalism.” Denali Stud's Conrad Bandoroff said that the regally bred filly has taken everything in stride since arriving in Saratoga and kicking off a demanding week on the sales grounds. “She has so much presence, class, and intelligence about her,” he explained. “I think she knows she's a bit special. One of the things I really love about her is she has this really beautiful and kind eye. She takes two steps out of the barn and immediately captures your attention.” The filly is showing out of the same stall that her half-brother occupied two years ago. Also consigned by Denali, Journalism sold to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners for $825,000 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. Bandoroff said he has fond memories of his time with the future star. “As a yearling, Journalism was a dude,” he noted. “He was very imposing, very strong and an incredibly good-moving horse. He was vetted by almost every top buyer. Everyone was on him. When we're selecting horses to come up to Saratoga, one of the biggest things we emphasize when we're talking with our clients is the mental aspect of coming up here because it's a lot to ask of these young horses. With Journalism, that was one attribute that we never questioned. We knew he was going to come up here and do his job. He had this way of putting his head down and marching. There was always something that really stood out in my mind about him.” Journalism's half-sister sells as Hip 165 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga | Sara Gordon Now back in training at Del Mar after his Haskell score, Journalism is targeting either a return to Saratoga for the GI Travers Stakes on Aug. 23. or the GI Pacific Classic Stakes on Aug. 30. “Anytime you have a horse come up to Saratoga and sell for $825,000, that's a proud moment,” said Bandoroff. “When they go on to reach the heights that Journalism has gone on to succeed, it's very rewarding and very gratifying. We're very proud at Denali to not only say that we have this small connection with him, but now we are incredibly excited to have the opportunity to represent the Don Alberto team in selling his half-sister.” In addition to their daughter of Mopotism, Don Alberto will offer five other yearlings in Saratoga including Hip 117, a full-brother to dual Grade I winner and young sire Muth (Good Magic) and Hip 193, a Constitution filly out of GI La Troienne victress Salty (Quality Road). “We're excited about the yearlings we have up here,” said Ringler. “We hope it's a vibrant marketplace. There's always great energy up here. Just looking around already, there are a lot of 'wows' up here this year. It's a beautiful time of year for a horse sale and it's Saratoga. Anything can happen.” The post Journalism Half-Sis Set to Write Her Own Story in Saratoga appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Trainer Joe Sharp notched his 1,000th North American victory in sixth race at Ellis Park on Friday when Master Game (Mastery) took a seven-furlong claimer under Tyler Gaffalione. At Saratoga that same day where he won his 999th in the third race, the trainer–who went out on his own in 2014–said it was satisfying to reach the milestone with his Ellis-based team, which is headed by longtime assistant Marvin Alvarez. “It's great, and I was happy to have it happen down there at Ellis because Marvin has been there with me since the beginning,” said Sharp, who watched the race on his iPad with his family from the playground at Saratoga. “He was my first groom, and now he's my assistant. I think it meant as much to him as it did to me because he's been there since win number one. We built this together.” The post Joe Sharp Reaches 1,000 North American Wins appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's Waardah (Postponed) notched a black-type breakthrough at Goodwood in June and revisted the Sussex Downs venue to claim a career high with a battling victory in Saturday's 14-furlong G2 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes. The Listed Agnes Keyser Fillies' Stakes victrix, sent postward as the well-backed 7-2 second choice, employed patient tactics in rear for most of this marathon trip. Making smooth headway on the bridle in the straight, she seized control approaching the quarter-mile marker and came under a late drive to outstay the rallying Danielle (Cracksman) by 3/4-of-a-length in a thrilling duel. Irish challenger Goodie Two Shoes (Fastnet Rock), who outbobbed Term Of Endearment (Sea The Moon) by a nose, finished 4 1/4 lengths adrift in third.
