Handy five-year-old gelding Step Aside ran out a ready winner of the Rosehill Bowling Club Handicap (1300m) on Saturday for trainer Chris Waller under a perfect Zac Lloyd ride as the young hoop showed his class with an early treble at Rosehill. Lloyd rode the first three winners and had Step Aside perfectly poised behind the leaders Salisano and Lady Boss and comfortably overhauled them to score by just on two lengths. The son of Redwood sports the colours of OTI Racing and has bounced back from an incident two starts back where Tommy Berry was dislodged after being crowded for room with Step Aside breaking through the running rail. He subsequently finished third behind Bunker Hut earlier this month. “He came through that incident Scott-free fortunately,” Waller said. “His next run was good. He probably peaked with 100m to go but today’s ride from Zac was brilliant. He utilized the good draw and just landed there (behind the leaders) and didn’t do any work and was able to have a good solid finish. Waller admitted Step Aside is a bread and butter horse but said there was plenty of lucrative prizemoney as evidenced by the A$160,000 BenchMark 78. “It tastes pretty good the bread and butter on Saturday in Sydney,” Waller said. “He has earned just over $80,000 for winning, which takes you a long way. If he can win another one, he has done a great job.” Winning rider Zac Lloyd said the gelding filled him with confidence heading to the starting gates. “I have never sat on him previously, but with the addition of blinkers today I was very happy with the horse cantering to the gates,” Lloyd said. “I just kept him nice and happy as he doesn’t win out of turn. The race panned out well for him as he has a good turn of foot on him on his day and they went very steady. “I needed a bit of luck as we straightened but I did and he won that race quite easily.” By Redwood out of the winning Roc de Cambes mare Teena Rox, Step Aside began his career with Cambridge trainer Ralph Manning, winning an 800m trial on the Cambridge synthetic before his sale to OTI. Step Aside has now won four of his 20 starts with a further eight placings and prizemoney of A$293,100. View the full article

Well-bred three-year-old Shanwah is fulfilling his potential as a gelding for trainer Ciaron Maher with a dominant display in the Gr.2 Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield. The New Zealand bred son of Too Darn Hot has recorded three victories in succession with Saturday’s win coming under a heady ride by Blake Shinn, who found the trail behind a solid tempo set by Emphasize. Shanwah came off the leader’s back rounding the home turn and was a soft length and a half winner over Confetti Garden and Imperialist. A $750,000 Karaka yearling purchase by Cameron Cooke Bloodstock on behalf of owners Kevin and Vikki Payne, Shanwah commenced his career as a colt but gelding has proved the making of the horse who could be bound for the Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m). “He was always a lovely horse,” Maher said. “Kevin stumped up a bit of money for him at Karaka and I tried to get him to get his mind on the job as a colt and that was proving a little bit difficult. “When he was gelded, it all just clicked with him. He is a lovely type and is by the right stallion and Kevin has got a knack of picking these horses. He is very progressive. “He just wants to please you. He was happy to sit out there, and credit to Blake, he knew he wanted to be forward in the race. “He was caught a little bit wide but as soon as he dropped his hands he just relaxed, tucked the head in and you know those horses are going to reach their full potential because they just want to please you. “He couldn’t have been more impressive today so maybe on to an Alistair Clark (Gr.2, 2040m) or something like that and then maybe up north.” Bred by Trelawney and long-time partner John Struthers, Shanwah is out of the Iffraaj mare Lady Sayyida and is a half-brother to Group Two winner Excelida. A granddaughter of the hugely talented Sayyida, it is also the family of Ocean Park, Grunt and Zaydani. Shanwah has now won three of his seven starts with a further placing and has amassed A$258,975 to date. View the full article

Mr Brightside ridden by Craig Williams winning the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse. (Photo by Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Mr Brightside (-153.85) has shown his toughness and ability to hold off his rivals late in the Group 1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield, defending his title after claiming the same race last year. The Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained gelding claimed his ninth Group 1 success of his career, proving that he is one of Australia’s best middle-distance horses. After being heavily backed with Neds, the son of Bullbars was made to settle outside the leader, Private Life (+1200), and do it the hard way, but he proved too strong and too tough in the concluding stages. Craig Williams trusted his star galloper and what he had underneath him as he took over from the leader at the top of the home straight and kicked clear. However, the runs were coming from the back of the field, with I Wish I Win (+650) and Tom Kitten (+900) letting down with their finishing bursts. As Mr Brightside started to take shorter strides, I Wish I Win and Tom Kitten continued to lengthen, and they put in a lunge on the winning post. It was no avail as the class horse in the race held on to win in a photo finish over Tom Kitten and I Wish I Win. Click here for all of the Caulfield race replays. Will Hayes represented the winning stable, and he spoke to the media post the win. “He’s an absolute marvel, it was a terrific ride from Craig,” Hayes said. “We’re so blessed to have him in our stable and his ability to overcome a wide gate is a credit to himself. So tough. “He carries on like a three year old in the stables. He’s so sound and every time he could just get the best out of himself. To just do what he did today can’t be underrated. “It was a terrific run from Tom Kitten and I Wish I Win. “We had our heart in the mouth the last hundred because we knew we were going to be a little bit vulnerable late from the wide gate and having to work across. He really dug deep and we found that inch. “Without a doubt (going to Hong Kong). We got a Group 1 in New Zealand a week back. So we’ll continue to try for world domination.” Craig Williams also spoke about the win post-race. “Credit to him. He does all the running. The Hayes boys, Will, J D and Ben, and all the team behind, they present him to me on race days,” Williams said. “I can have all these plans and ideas, but I have the confidence in the horse knowing from all the way back to his third ever race start, they have developed him into the horse he is now. “Nine Group 1’s it’s not easy as you can see by the margin today. “He does make my job really easy, but I just know every time I ride him, I have so many options. “He stuck his head out at the winning post not forgetting he had the outside barrier draw, wide like he was the other day against some very good horses and they don’t give Group 1’s away. “It’s a really hot day, a firmer track, so credit to the horse, credit all the people behind him.” Horse racing news View the full article

Coeur Volante ridden by Blake Shinn winning the Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield. (Photo by Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Blake Shinn has produced another confident stalking ride at Caulfield, this time to win on Coeur Volante (+450) in the Group 2 Mannerism Stakes. The Michael Moroney & Glen Thompson-trained mare found 1200m too short first-up, but after coming into the race with an unbeaten second-up record, she kept that record intact with a big win in the 1400m contest. The race favourite with BlondeBet, Grinzinger Belle (+210), took up the lead as many expected her too; however, she went way too hard out in front, which allowed Shinn to settle the eventual winner behind the tearaway leader and receive the run of the race. Although she held a two-length margin on Shinn and the eventual winner, Grinzinger Belle started to tire early in the home straight, and once Shinn released the brakes, Coeur Volante went straight on by to storm clear of the field. Coeur Volante was eased down late but still recorded a massive four-length victory over So Glamorous (+400) and Quintessa (+1400). Click here for all of the Caulfield race replays. Michael Moroney represented the winning stable post-race. “She’s a very classy filly. It’s just a matter of getting the gear (right),” Moroney said. “We had her in the Tiara and I had the blinkers on her that day and then we scratched because we weren’t happy with her and saved her for now. “She had a nice long break up there and it’s going to pay off. “Her whole demeanour is starting to change now she’s accepting racing. “She went through a bit of a funny stage when she went off the boil – I think she’s back now.” “We’ll probably go up to Sydney with her now for the Coolmore. We think she’s Group 1 class and she run a good race here in the Thousand Guineas probably on pretty tired legs so I’m pretty sure that she’ll handle 1500m no problems.” Blake Shinn brought a riding double on Coeur Volante, and he spoke post-race. “It’s just great to see her back. Really well done to Mike and her team,” Shinn said of the winner. “We took it to Queensland in the winter hopeful that she could measure up to a Tatt’s Tiara, but she just wasn’t quite handling that sort of trip up there. “Full credit to Mike and Rupert. They didn’t run her in the Tatt’s Tiara hopeful that we could get her up into a spring but she didn’t quite come up. “She won really well at Mooney Valley. “I think she’s actually a good horse, but like I said, she’s a finicky filly, she doesn’t hold a lot of condition, quite a nervous type and as she’s maturing, hopefully she can get out of that. “It’s just great to see her back. I think she’s got Group 2 ability and hopefully she can get to that point. “She did start favourite in a Thousand Guineas. “I’m just wrapped for Mike, wrapped for Glenn, Anthony and the owners, because she’s a talented horse.” “I think she felt a bit more confident within herself and put herself in the right position to dominate the race. That’s the real Coeur Volante we all know.” Horse racing news View the full article

Firestorm winning the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes at Rosehill. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au Chris Waller & Jason Collett have combined with Firestorm ($7.00) to claim the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on Saturday afternoon, with the returning mare showing a blistering turn-of-foot in the concluding stages to secure the $300,000 prize. The daughter of Satono Aladdin was well-supported with horse racing bookmakers prior to the jump, with the four-year-old boasting an impressive first-up record of four starts for three wins fresh, as well as an undefeated record when racing at Rosehill. She was aided by a genuine tempo in the 1300m feature, as Watch My Girl ($7.00) strode to the top under Alysha Collett from barrier two, while the heavily backed $1.60 favourite with Neds, Makarena pressed forward to sit on her outside. The pair were quickly niggled along turning for home, while Firestorm’s stable companion Scarlet Oak looked to travel comfortably on the three-wide line before taking over under Zac Lloyd. Dark Glitter ($34.00) cut back to the inside and didn’t go around the horse as she appeared to be finishing best, while Firestorm surged down the middle of the course. It was Firestorm getting the verdict in the end, adding a fifth career victory to the resume and kicking off the autumn campaign in stylish fashion. Click here for all of the Rosehill race replays. Chris Waller was on course at Rosehill to break down the win. “Each time she’s stepped out first up basically she’s won,” said Waller. “Lovely ride from Jason (Collett), she was well prepared for the race today, two trials and we expected her to show something but to win a Group 2 it was a big step up for her. “It was a lovely patient ride from Jason. There wasn’t a lot of speed. He didn’t panic and got her out at the right time. “I would say 1500m to a mile (is her best distance). We got away with 1300m today fresh but we have tried her over further and she hasn’t been quite as effective.” Jason Collett was delighted with the victory as he spoke post-race. “She was really well today,” said Collett. “She was in a great frame of mind and even in the run, albeit three pairs back, moderate tempo, I still felt I was going to be running on strongly.” “Makarena is obviously a good horse, sitting up outside the lead, dictating the speed. I was a little concerned, but she had that extra gear and when I got to them at the 150m, she just went on with it. “That was pretty good.” Horse racing news View the full article

Treasurethe Moment ridden by Damian Lane winning the Angus Armanasco Stakes at Caulfield. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Treasurethe Moment has returned with a dominant victory in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes, with the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) winner proving way too good for her rivals over 1400m first up. The Matt Laurie-trained filly was heavily backed with horse racing bookmakers from +270 into a +200 favourite, with early favourite Too Darn Lizzie going the other way from +200 to +240. As expected, Too Darn Lizzie bounced well from the gates to find the lead, ahead of the eventual winner and Jenni The Fox. However, with Lane still having a stranglehold on Treasurethe Moment on the home turn, it looked as though the result was inevitable, as they strolled straight past the leader with 250m to go. Treasurethe Moment careered away from her rivals within a few strides and put the race to bed by the 150m mark, with only Jenni The Fox taking any ground off her. Even though the winning margin was only one length, Lane was very kind to the winner late, easing her down from the 50m mark. Click here for all of the Caulfield race replays. Matt Laurie was elated with the win post-race and he spoke to the media on course. “It was painless sort of viewing, wasn’t it?” Laurie said. “They hadn’t got to her at the turn and you knew she was going to have plenty in the kicker. “So to do that as top weight, first up over 1400 after stretching her out to the Oaks trip, it’s very exciting. “She hasn’t fully filled out into her frame by any means. “I think there’s a lot more to come physically but she’s developed into the perfect racehorse.” “I thought 2000 meters at Flemington was just going to be ideal on that occasion (Wakeful). “I wondered whether she kind of crabbed around the turn here a little bit, but she won. “It was a gritty effort and I think that was the turning point. She went from that sort of benchmark horse into a stakes horse from that point. It’s been a great ride.” Damian Lane spoke about the winner glowingly post-race. “She’s a class horse. She’s come back really well this preparation,” Lane said. “I’ve been on her twice, one trial and the gallop here Tuesday in particular, I thought she’s definitely sharped up since last prep and she matured a little bit. “There were great signs leading in to today but then to do it with the top weight, doing a little bit of work early and then into the breeze down the side (she still) never felt like getting beat. “Too Darn Lizzie was the obvious leader and I drew outside her. “Just using that speed that she’s got that early speed to be able to get up and sit second and then let her do the rest.” Horse racing news View the full article

Tropicus ridden by Mark Zahra winning the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) Anthony & Sam Freedman combined with Mark Zahra to take out the Group 3 Zeditave Stakes with Tropicus (+240), who never saw another horse back after leading every step of the way over 1200m at Caulfield. Zahra took luck out of the equation after his mount jumped well from the barriers, pushing forward to take up the lead on the son of Too Darn Hot, with Parliamentary (+2500) and Interest Point (+6000) settling behind the pacesetter. With very little changing through the first half of the contest, Craig Williams got going on Lofty Arch (+300) from the back of the field to get into the race. As the leader and race favourite with Picklebet turned into the home straight, he held a good margin over his rivals before giving a strong kick at the 300m mark. Lofty Arch chased gamely down the middle of the track but peaked on his run with 100m to go, while Sargeant Major (+750) flashed home on the inside of runners. But all honours went to Tropicus, who fought off all challengers to claim a 1.5-length win over Lofty Arch and the fast-finishing Sergeant Major. Click here for all of the Caulfield race replays. Sam Freedman represented the winning stable in the post-race interview. “Excellent win. Everyone bangs on about the wind but we’ve had two horses lead into it and it is still the shortest way home,” Freedman said. “He began well and Mark got him into a good rhythm. I think that was the main thing, getting him to relax and getting into a rhythm with the blinkers on. “He was a bit keen, a bit fresh first up. “We stretched him out to the mile and he was keen in a slowly run Guineas. “You’re always learning and the spring is hard because you’ve got to make a decision which way you go. “We made the decision to go to the Golden Rose and the Guineas, but he’ll stick to the six furlongs this time around. “He’s even sharper. He could potentially go 1100m. He was awesome – it was a great result.” When asked what was next for Tropicus, Freedman said the Group 1 Goodwood could be on the cards. “We’ll chat with Luke and Shane and the team at Kia-ora and work it out from here,” he said. “There’s a race like the Goodwood over there in Adelaide.” Horse racing news View the full article

Shanwah winning the 2025 Group 2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Ciaron Maher and Blake Shinn have struck for the first time on Blue Diamond Stakes Day at Caulfield, combining with Shanwah (+210) to claim the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m). The son of Too Darn Hot was given a peach of a ride by Shinn, who took his time to cross from a wider barrier before sitting in the slipstream of the leader and race favourite with Dabble, Emphasize (+190). Craig Williams took up the lead on the race favourite, with Shanwah and Confetti Garden (+900) settling behind the leader, who held a one-length margin on his rivals. Turning for home, Williams released the brakes on Emphasise, but there was little left in the tank, and Shinn took the eventual winner to the outside of the slowing leader to stride straight past by the 200m mark. Imperialist (+1000) and Confetti Garden worked home nicely from midfield, but they were no match for Shanwah, who recorded a dominant 1.5-length win. Click here for all of the Caulfield race replays. Ciaron Maher was very happy with the win, and he spoke post-race. “He’s a very progressive horse,” Maher said. “He’d come on a lot from his last two runs. “Blake (Shinn) wanted to be forward. He rode him confident. I think he knew what he had underneath him. “He’s progressive so probably goes on now to a race like the Alistair Clark.” “You see him during the race. He just wants to relax. He tucks the head in, he looks like you’d be able to train him for any distance really. “Kevin had to stump up a little bit of money at the yearling sales so I’m glad he is starting to the rewards now.” Blake Shinn echoed similar thoughts to Maher in his interview. “There was a bit of sorting itself out in the early stages but once we we’re able to obtain a bit of cover behind Emphasize, I was very happy because he’s got a pretty lethal turn foot for a middle distance style of horse,” Shinn said. “He’s a capable goal bar and going places this horse. “He’s obviously gotten fitter, he’s a colt. He’d come down from Sydney. Full credit to Ciaron [Maher] and the team here in Melbourne. “He’s just got a good handle on him. He’s a cheeky little bigger because as he’s got fitter and got up to his right distance he’s just come into his own. “He’s an expensive horse by Too Darn Hot and Kevin Payne put a fair bit of money and trust into this horse but now it’s coming to the fore.” Horse racing news View the full article

Debuting Friday for Mark Glatt and Muir Hut Stables, FORMULA ROSSA (f, 3, Vekoma–Fay Na Na, by Majestic Warrior) stalked off a heavily-wagered Bob Baffert runner Brilliantly (Uncle Mo), surged to the front at the quarter pole and put that rival away to cruise home a new 'TDN Rising Star'. Breaking just a touch behind the favorite, the 4-1 shot settled third as stablemates Brilliantly and Cooey (Girvin) battled into the far turn. As Cooey faded on the rail, Brilliantly pushed on and opened up a gap but Formula Rossa drew closer with an outside bid at the quarter pole and impressed in the final sixteenth to win first-time out under Mike Smith. Wish Me Luck hard to beat in today’s Ashburton Cup
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in BOAY Racing News
By Mike Love Wish Me Luck will be looking to continue the success of Hayden and Amanda Cullen’s brilliant start to their training partnership at Ashburton today. The five-year-old Vincent gelding is looking to go back to back in the Gallagher Insurance Ashburton Cup over 3200m after winning the Amberley cup on Waitangi day. “He’s come through Rangiora really well. He seems bright and he’s trained on great,” said Amanda Cullen. It will be Wish Me Luck’s first attempt at the extreme distance of 3200m but that does not concern Cullen. “He’s such a genuine racehorse. The more practice from a stand he gets the better.” To be driven by the country’s top driver Blair Orange, Wish Me Luck is a pronounced favourite at $2.05 for the Cup (2.43pm). “We will leave it up to Blair to assess things based on how he gets away.” Wish Me Luck has won six of his 17 race day starts, while placing on seven occasions. Other chances in the event include the Steve Harding trained Audacity, while Dance Till Dawn is in the market for Robert and Jenna Dunn. The Cullens also prepare Bonnie’s Girl in Race 8, the Allenton Pharmacy Fillies and Mares Mobile Pace over 1700m, again with Blair Orange in the sulky. “She wasn’t one hundred percent in her gait at Oamaru last start. But we took her to the trials since then and the report was that she was much better.” “We are expecting a better run but it’s not an easy field so we will just leave it up to Blair and see how she’s travelling.” The Cullen combination have won three from 12 so far with four placings in what has been a dream start for the pair. “It’s been really good and all is going well.” And things are looking cherry in the near future after some quality purchases at the recent NZB Standardbred National yearling Sales with five quality purchases.
