Horse racing is woven into the cultural and economic fabric of Florida as well as the United States. For generations, our sport has brought communities together, created jobs, served as the foundation for vibrant local economies and sparked an economic-driving industry. However, the proposed changes in Florida House Bill 105, supported by The Stronach Group (TSG), threaten to unravel this legacy by decoupling live thoroughbred horse racing from gaming operations. This legislation is not just a Florida issue; it represents a dangerous precedent that could jeopardize the future of horse racing across the nation. Historically, the horse-racing industry has been a key partner in establishing casinos in many states. Without this partnership, it is unlikely that gaming would have gained the foothold it enjoys today. When casinos first sought to expand into new markets, they aligned with the horse-racing industry, leveraging our sport's rich history and community support to build the trust needed for their establishment. In return, the horse-racing industry benefited from the revenues by receiving tariffs (not subsidies) generated by gaming, thus creating a mutually beneficial relationship that has sustained jobs, communities and state economies for decades. Now, Florida HB 105 seeks to undermine that partnership by allowing thoroughbred permit-holders to cease live racing while retaining their gaming licenses. This move—known as decoupling—would sever the critical link between live horse racing and gaming, increasing our society's separation from agriculture and jeopardizing an industry that has contributed significantly to Florida's identity and economy. TSG would not be in this situation of seeking to decouple if it were not from the benefits gained through racing. Live horse racing is more than a sport; it is an economic engine that supports thousands of jobs. Trainers, jockeys, breeders, farm workers, veterinarians and countless other professionals depend on the industry for their livelihoods. In Florida alone, thoroughbred racing generates millions of dollars in revenue for the state. The ripple effects would extend far beyond the racing industry, impacting local economies and the economic benefits that live racing provides. What happens in Florida won't likely stay in Florida. If HB 105 passes, it will embolden similar efforts in other states where live racing is coupled with gaming. Decoupling could create a domino effect, undermining the fragile ecosystems that support horse racing nationwide. Take states such as Arkansas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Indiana and many others, where live racing is deeply intertwined with gaming. If decoupling becomes the norm, states could face similar challenges, risking the closure of tracks, the loss of jobs and further separation of our sport's cultural and agricultural significance. Allowing gaming licenses to exist without live racing undermines the very principles upon which these partnerships were built. When states approved gaming, it was statutorily defined that the revenues would help support live racing, rural economies and agricultural industries. The act of decoupling breaks this promise, and will be detrimental to the long-term health of the horse-racing industry and the agri-businesses it supports. Without the consistent presence of live events, our sport risks losing its already tenuous connection to fans and will only increase the degree of separation from agriculture for future generations. Now is the time for horsemen and horsewomen across the country to stand united with the National HBPA in opposing Florida HB 105 and any similar legislation that threatens the future of live racing. We cannot afford to let decoupling dismantle an industry that has given so much to our states and communities. The horse-racing industry has proven its value time and again, not only as a source of entertainment but as a driver of economic growth. I urge Florida legislators to consider the broader implications of this bill. Decoupling may seem like a minor administrative change, but the consequences will be anything but small. It threatens jobs, our communities and a way of life for those of us lucky enough to work in this industry. But the Florida lawmakers need to hear from horsemen and women, industry stakeholders and fans of this great sport. We must ensure they understand what is at stake with this short-sighted legislation. The future of horse racing depends on it and together, we can protect an industry through a sport that has given so much to so many. Ninety years after the birth of the Italian champion racehorse and influential sire Nearco (Ity), Mattia Cadrobbi has been appointed as the new president of the Fondo Italiano dell'Allevamento (Italian Breeding Fund), succeeding the Marquis Annibale Brivio Sforza after his 30 years in the role. Cadrobbi is a former president of the Italian Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (ANAC). Cadrobbi, whose appointment also coincided with the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the FIA, is joined on the Board of Directors by vice president Alessandra Vigliani, who is responsible for Ticino Bloodstock. Guido Berardelli, who already represents the FIA on the Board of Directors of the ANAC, of which the FIA is a founding member, has also been appointed to the Board, along with stallion owner Marina Monassi and stud farm owner Romina Pinna. The management of the technical secretariat has been entrusted to Franco Castelfranchi. It was also reported that the new Board of the FIA has already requested the reintegration of Italy among the member countries of the European Breeders' Fund (EBF), which currently consists of Britain, Ireland, France and Germany. The membership of the FIA was reportedly responsible for over 58% of coverings carried out in Italy in 2024. Day Three of NZB’s 2025 National Yearling Sales Series rounded out Book 1 on Tuesday, with a solid day of trade on par with last year’s results. At the close of selling, the Book 1 aggregate reached $75,322,500 from a slightly smaller offering of 588 yearlings, while the average rounded out at $164,819 and the clearance rate improved to 78%. The Book 1 session was one for the history books when a record-breaking $2.4 million sale of Lot 345 took place on the second day, marking the most expensive filly to be purchased at Karaka and the highest priced yearling in 25 years. NZB’s Managing Director Andrew Seabrook was pleased following the final day of Book 1. “We said if we could get close to the incredible result of 2024, we’d be thrilled, and we are down just 5% for now, so we could not be happier.” “We’ve been talking about how strong the international buying bench was here this week, but our domestic bench was outstanding. “Given the state of the economy, we’ve just proven how resilient this industry is.” It was a case of déjà vu when the highlight of Day Three, Lot 564, a full sister to Prowess (Proisir) offered by Hallmark Stud, was knocked down to Roger James and Robert Wellwood for $1.1 million. Only a year earlier, Hallmark’s Mark Baker sold another full-sister to the star for $1.6 million. “It’s a dream result,” he commented. “To repeat these results two years in a row, that is surreal. It hasn’t sunk in yet.” “It’s great for the family, her (Donna Marie’s) family, but our family. We are a small family-run stud farm. “It was a great Sale. Our clients were well-rewarded for nice horses and our pinhooks were good to us.” The second top lot of the day came when Lot 637 (Proisir x Golden Hind) sold for $850,000 to the bid of agent Dean Hawthorne. The filly was offered by Curraghmore, who led the vendor by average tables and sold all 18 yearlings offered for an average of $322,222. Securing his leading buyer title for another year was Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis, who purchased 26 yearlings over the last three days for a total spend of $4,497,500. “We’re so lucky to have such a large group of owners here at the Sale, it makes us determined to buy more horses,” he commented. “There are horses at all levels to purchase this week. We’ve bought some good horses out of Book 2 in the past too,” added Ellis. For the first time, Karaka-based Haunui Farm took the title of leading vendor, selling 24 yearlings for $6,740,000. “It’s an honour to be entrusted with such quality horses. We have some great clients that support us to bring their yearlings to the market, and it’s great to see them rewarded,” commented a delighted Mark Chitty. “It’s a massive team effort not only by Haunui but also by NZB to bring the buyers to Karaka to participate in a wonderful sale.” The leading sire for Book 1 was Coolmore’s popular Wootton Bassett, who sold nine yearlings for an average of $361,667, while his stablemate St Mark’s Basilica took the honours for the freshman stallions, with seven sold for an average of $235,714. Attention now turns to Book 2 on Wednesday where the selling of lots 662 to 860 will get underway from 12pm (NZT) at Karaka. Book 2 has been a happy hunting ground for Group One winners, highlighted by the likes of Queensland Derby winner Warmonger (NZ) (War Decree), Legarto (NZ) (Proisir) and Sharp ‘N’ Smart (NZ) (Redwood). All yearlings purchased at Karaka 2025 are eligible to be nominated for NZB’s lucrative Karaka Millions Series, featuring the $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO, $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO and the $1m NZB Mega Maiden Series. To nominate your yearling, contact finance@nzb.co.nz or call +64 9 298 0055. Entries close Monday 3 March 2025. Star galloper I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel) does not have a concrete autumn preparation mapped out, but one thing seems certain – his days being trained as an elite sprinter appear behind him. The six-year-old gelding will be targeted at races at and beyond 1400m this time in despite being a dual Group One winner over distances of 1200m and 1300m. The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained star was strutting his stuff at the Pakenham jumpouts on Tuesday and impressed by winning his heat comfortably under leading rider Jamie Melham. “Couldn’t have asked for any more, he was just out there for a soft trial today,” Coleman said. “We just instructed Jamie (Melham) just to keep him on the bridle and not really ask him to round it out – really pleased with how he finished it off and how he pulled up. “We might give him a week in between with a solid gallop next Tuesday and a trial the following week. “I’d say we’ll probably look to have him around that seven-furlong mark this preparation, but we’ll just be guided how he pulls up from this trial. “Nothing is set in stone yet, we’re just going to let him guide us and see how long it takes to get him in the condition we want to have him back to the races.” The racing future of I Wish I Win was cast up in the air following an uncharacteristically poor run in last year’s G1 The Everest (1200m) when he finished last, but Coleman said the stable flagbearer has shown all the signs there is plenty left to offer on the track having been given a good break. “He had been up and going a while without having a proper spell for quite a while, even though he’s only lightly raced he’d still been in work for quite a long time,” Coleman said. “He’s really enjoyed that, he seems to have come back in really good order, the main things that I was looking for in having him back in the stable was just that he still wanted to be there and everything that he’s done, he’s been bold and happy in his work, he’s been carrying on and nice and fresh and happy, and just showing all the right signs. “I ride him in a lot of his trackwork and he’s been dragging me around the place like usual.” I Wish I Win is second favourite to win the Gr.1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield – a $7 hope behind well-supported $3.50 favourite Mr Brightside. Genuine filly Renovations (NZ) (Ardrossan) will face a distance test at New Plymouth on Saturday and connections are confident she can rise to the challenge. The daughter of Ardrossan, who has been racing well in good company this preparation, will step up in trip when she tackles the Listed Grangewilliam Stud Oaks Prelude (1800m). Renovations was a two-year-old winner last season and finished runner-up in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes (1400m) before a break. Since her return, she has been around the mark in prestigious events when fourth two runs back in the Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes (1600m) and third in the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m). “She probably lacks a bit of class, but she is doing a good job and picking up that valuable black type and that’s what she’s there for,” trainer Cody Cole said. “We were a month between runs last start and she raced a little bit keener than she has. “She doesn’t have a long sprint and had to get moving a bit earlier than we wanted in the Desert Gold and the last 100m told.” Renovations holds a nomination for the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks (2400m) and Saturday will provide a further insight into her Classic prospects. “She does usually relax well, and New Plymouth should suit her with not such a long run in as Trentham,” Cole said. “I thought it was a nice option with Te Rapa (Gr.2 David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic, 2000m) likely to be red hot. “This will be a peg below and a chance to stretch her out in trip and see how she copes, I don’t think the 1800m will be a problem for her.” Cole will also have a decent winning chance on the undercard with promising El Roca three-year-old Atmospheric in the Warner Construction MAAT (1400m). “He won quite nicely at Tauranga last time out, he’s a horse that has taken a bit of time and has only had three starts for a couple of placings as well,” he said. “The way he won the other day really impressed us and I think he is well capable of going on with it, he’ll be even better as a four-year-old.” Also heading south is Wet ‘N’ Wild (NZ) (Ocean Park) in the Revital Fertilisers (1200m) and a return to her best form would see the Ocean Park mare competitive. “She pulled up with a couple of issues in her last two runs, but her first-up effort was really good,” Cole said. “She ran second to Acquarello, who came out and won a stakes race, and on her day she’s good and hopefully we’ll see the best version of her.” View the full article

Star southerner Matscot (NZ) (Haradasun) displayed that he is on track for another Group One target in the North Island with a comfortable trial victory at Ashburton on Tuesday. In the hands of jockey Samantha Wynne, Matscot was the slowest away in his five-horse 1200m heat, but he soon picked up his rivals turning for home, cruising to the line by 1-1/2 lengths to handy mare Nortibutnice. Alan Reeves, who trains the seven-year-old in partnership with Sharon Robertson, was pleased with the performance as he prepares to take on the Gr.1 Herbie Dyke Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa in 10 days’ time. “He went well, it was a nice tick over to top him off before he goes up to Waikato next Saturday,” Reeves said. “He galloped between races last Saturday as well because he’s got to travel up next Monday, so we’ve got to get his main work in this week. The trial was just to bring him down to earth a bit. “He’ll travel by road this time and he’ll get to Matamata on Tuesday morning, which will give him a few days to get over it.” The son of Haradasun is no stranger to long-distance travel, having crossed the Cook Strait to compete in the Gr.1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m), Gr.1 Mufhasa Classic (1600m) and Gr.1 Zabeel Classic (2000m) already this season. His best result of the three was a third behind One Bold Cat in the Arrowfield, and with a star-studded line-up set to take on the Herbie Dyke, Reeves is hopeful his charge is up to the challenge. “He’s got to take on the likes of Orchestral, La Crique and Snazzytavi, so he’s got to be on his A game,” he said. “He’s probably going better than he was when we went to Ellerslie (Zabeel Classic), because of the rain down here during that week, we couldn’t work on the main tracks. “He’s on target and as good as we can get him.” View the full article

David Hayes has 27 winners this season. Photo: HKJC David Hayes will chase a third victory in the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin on Friday when the dual Hong Kong champion trainer unleashes Rubylot in the first leg of the HK$52 million Four-Year-Old Classic Series. Now in his second stint in Hong Kong, Hayes first tasted success in the feature with Resfa, who triumphed for Basil Marcus in 1999 when it was named the Hong Kong Classic Trial, and struck again in 2001 when Shane Dye scored on Charming City. Since returning to Hong Kong for the 2020/21 season, Hayes has had several runners in the Hong Kong Classic Mile, including The Summit, Beauty Joy and Shadow Hero in 2021, Lucky With You in 2022, Bon’s A Pearla and Flagship Warrior in 2023 and Star Mac, who finished third behind Helios Express and Helene Feeling last year. With five wins from 16 starts, Rubylot is the joint highest-rated horse in the Hong Kong Classic Mile with Francis Lui-trained Packing Hermod on a mark of 93 with Hayes’ galloper prevailing in the Class 2 The Racing Club Cup Handicap (1400m) on January 12, defeating four of Friday’s rivals – Johannes Brahms (third), Packing Hermod (fourth), Glory Elite (fifth) and Divano (eighth). “I’m very happy with him (Rubylot). I think his race (on January 12) was probably the hardest of all of the lead ups,” Hayes said. “He also ran second in another (race), which was similar. I have no doubt he’ll run the mile – I think he’ll run a very good mile. “He’s had a lot of race experience and his racing pattern says he’s crying out for a mile, but I’ve really saved it up for this race. I thought I’ll keep him at the shorter distance because there’s less pressure, but now we’ll stretch him out.” Rubylot will start from barrier 10 under Brenton Avdulla, as reigning Hong Kong champion trainer Francis Lui aims for his first Hong Kong Classic Mile success since Golden Sixty in 2020 with a four-strong arsenal featuring Packing Hermod (Zac Purton), Divano (Blake Shinn), Call Me Glorious (Matthew Chadwick) and Cap Ferrat (Vincent Ho). Following a string of testing barrier draws, Packing Hermod starts from barrier six on Friday. “He (Packing Hermod) is doing well. Of course, he is the one I expect to be hard to beat when you look at how he’s performed so far, but we will see,” Lui said. “I think the mile will be okay for him now he’s more relaxed and he keeps improving a little bit with every run. Hopefully he can run well.” Divano must overcome barrier 14, while Cap Ferrat (gate three) and Call Me Glorious (five) have drawn nicely. Completing the line-up is Fast Network (Christophe Soumillon), Johannes Brahms (Mickael Barzalona), Glory Elite (Harry Bentley), Mickley (Hugh Bowman), Lucy In The Sky (Karis Teetan), My Wish (Luke Ferraris), Top Gun (Jamie Melham), Talents Ambition (Matthew Poon) and Markwin (Derek Leung). The Hong Kong Classic Mile is the first leg in the three-race Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which also features the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) on March 2 and the HK$26 million Hong Kong Derby (2000m) on March 23. Drombeg Banner is a five-time winner in Hong Kong. Photo: HKJC Chasing his first Class 2 Chinese New Year Cup Handicap (1400m) victory, Pierre Ng is armed with two decent chances in the HK$2.84 million feature at the Chinese New Year meeting on Friday. Apprentice jockey Britney Wong will partner Drombeg Banner, while visiting jockey Jamie Melham will ride Aurora Lady for Ng in the Chinese New Year Cup, the traditional feature of Chinese New Year Raceday. Drombeg Banner had the option to run in the Group 3 Centenary Vase Handicap (1800m) at the same meeting; however, Ng decided to stick with the Chinese New Year Cup, which Ng believes better suits the horse distance-wise. Ng said: “1400m is the best distance of Drombeg Banner and therefore I decided to run him in this race, as this is an easier race for him compared with the Group 3 on the same day, and because he has to carry heavy weight (131lb) I chose to engage Britney, who has ten-pound claim.” “Drombeg Banner has further improved this term and has been a model of consistency in this class. He will race in the front as usual,” Ng added. Meanwhile, Aurora Lady will bid to open his account at Sha Tin after winning three races at Happy Valley this term. The Star Witness gelding will be stepping up in trip over 1400m for the first time on Friday. Ng said: “Aurora Lady has proven himself in Class 3 and I want to test him over a bit longer distance at Sha Tin,” Ng said. “Initially, I intended to engage Mickael (Barzalona) but as the horse only carries 116lbs in the race, I turned to Jamie (Melham) as she is a light-weight jockey. Aurora Lady will follow Drombeg Banner during the Friday’s race.” Ng added. Friday’s 11-race card at Sha Tin starts with the Class 5 Kung Hei Handicap (1200m) at 12.30pm HKT. The Class 2 Chinese New Year Cup is carded as Race 4 at 3.05pm local time. The meeting also features the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m), the first leg of the 2025 Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which is carded as Race 8, and Group 3 Centenary Vase Handicap (1800m), which is carded as Race 4. The Triple Trio’s estimated dividend for a single HK$10 winning unit could reach HK$18 million for Chinese New Year Raceday. The Quartet & First 4 Merged Pool will also be topped up with a HK$2.8 million jackpot. Horse racing news View the full article

Stretan Angel. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) The Phillip Stokes-trained Stretan Angel made an impressive return to trackwork at Pakenham on Tuesday morning, with the four-year-old inserting herself as a potential contender for the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 15. That’s the intended return date for the daughter of Harry Angel, with Stokes speaking to Racing.com to confirm the target after an eye-catching jump-out victory. “She obviously won the jump-out, when she got to the front, she sort of clocked off a bit, knew she done her job,” said Stokes. “She had a good blow so there’s good improvement to come. “He (Lachlan Neindorf) was very positive, he said she was a little bit keen early, then she just switched off beautifully, and when he asked her he said she was electric showing that nice turn of speed that she’s got. “She’ll go to the Lightning now first-up, she always seems to take a run just to bring her on and then she’ll go to the Newmarket. “She’s dynamic down the straight. She won the Danehill Stakes (Group 2) so we’re in for a good prep. “She raced in the Champions Sprint, and I think she ran fourth that day not beaten far, so she only needs to find a few lengths and she’ll be competing against the elite.” Stretan Angel is currently a $26.00 chance for the Lightning Stakes with horse racing bookmakers. I Wish I Win. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) The Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman-trained I Wish I Win has returned to work in impressive fashion at Pakenham on Tuesday morning, with the two-time Group 1 winner going on to score in his first jump-out since failing in the Everest (1200m) on October 19. The son of Savabeel did it nicely with Jamie Melham in the saddle, cruising past his rivals to suggest the six-year-old could be nearing his best heading into the autumn racing carnival. Katherine Coleman was on course at Pakenham on Tuesday morning, and while speaking with Racing.com, couldn’t have been happier with the work. “Couldn’t have asked for anymore,” said Coleman. “He was just out there for a soft trial today. “We just instructed Jamie (Melham) to keep him on the bridal and not really ask him to round it out, and we were really pleased with how he finished it off and how he pulled up. “We gave him a nice break, he had sort of been up and going for a while without having a proper spell for quite a while, even though he’s lightly raced he’d still been in work for quite a long time. “It was probably the first time he’s been able to have decent break in a while and I think he’s enjoyed that. He seems to have come back in really good order. “Everything that he’s done has been bold and happy in his work, he’s been carrying on nice and fresh and happy and just showing all the right signs, and I think we saw that in his trial today.” Coleman was hesitant to confirm a return date for the stable flagbearer for the autumn; however, the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) on March 8 appears to be the most likely assignment, where I Wish I Win is currently rated a $15.00 chance with Neds. HorseBetting’s Follow Files has returned for 2025 after a big weekend of racing that featured Group and Listed races in Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. In this week’s edition of The Follow Files, we have found three runners that produced strong performances in defeat and appear close to claiming a victory in their upcoming starts. You can add these horses to your blackbook with your chosen bookmaker and receive notifications when they are set to race again. Sunshine Coast Track rating: Soft 5 Rail position: True entire circuit Race 6: Benchmark 80 Handicap (1000m) | Time: 0:58.56 Horse to follow: Termagant (2nd) The Matthew Hoysted-trained Termagant produced one of the worst beats at the Sunshine Coast for those who backed the favourite with horse racing bookmakers. The daughter of Deep Field travelled sweetly worse than midfield, and when Nikita Beriman attempted to get into clear air turning for home, they were blocked for a run and nearly fell. However, the four-year-old mare picked herself up and sprinted sharply between runners to finish second by half a length, making the interference a little more painful for her backers. When to bet: Depending on how she pulls up from the run, Termagant is the clear top seed to follow out of Saturday’s meetings. If she goes back to the Sunshine Coast over 1000m, Termagant will be winning. https://horsebetting.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2025-Sunshine-Coast-25012025-Race6-Wild-Botanica-Stuart-Kendrick-Kyle-Wilson-Taylor.mp4 Sandown Track rating: Good 4 Rail position: True entire circuit Race 1: Benchmark 70 Handicap (1400m) | Time: 1:23.47 Horse to follow: Liberami (2nd) Liberami was the best of the beaten brigade in the opening race at Sandown, when the Robbie Griffiths-trained gelding flew home from the back of the field. This son of Turn Me Loose ran through the line strongly over 1200m at Flemington first up before producing another impressive finish over 1400m last weekend. This guy recorded the fastest last 600m (34.40s), 400m (22.99s), and 200m (11.83s) sections of the race, and she appears to be crying out for 1600m third-up. When to bet: The Benchmark 74 Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on February 8 looks like the ideal race for Liberami to compete in next. If he can settle closer to the speed and finish strongly, he can break through for a deserving win. https://horsebetting.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Sandown-Race-1-BM70-Handicap-25012025-Porter-Danny-OBrien-Damian-Lane.mp4 Randwick Track rating: Good 4 Rail position: +7m entire circuit Race 5: Benchmark 88 Handicap (1600m) | Time: 1:35.44 Horse to follow: For Victory (4th) Since returning from a four-week freshen, For Victory has been running well without luck and without winning over 1500m and 1600m, respectively. The Chris Waller-trained gelding was very unlucky last Saturday, when Zac Lloyd settled on the inside running rail and attempted to ride for luck over 1600m. The son of Mehmas was travelling very well and just needed a gap to appear to burst through and challenge in the finish. Unfortunately, that gap did not appear, and For Victory ran over the line hard-held in fourth place. When to bet: Chris Waller has entered For Victory in a 1500m race at Randwick this Saturday, but it is unlikely that he will get into the contest at 26th in the ballot. Any race over 1600m in a similar grade will give For Victory every chance to break his run of outs. https://horsebetting.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/2025-Randwick-25012025-Race5-Political-Debate-Chris-Waller-Tommy-Berry.mp4 Top horse racing sites for blackbook features Horse racing tips View the full article

An outstanding few days for Sword Of State’s first-crop yearlings at Karaka culminated in a $540,000 purchase price towards the end of the Book 1 session on Tuesday afternoon. The Group One-winning son of Snitzel took up stallion duties at Cambridge Stud in 2022 at an introductory service fee of $15,000. He had 20 first-crop yearlings sell for a total of $4.03 million, with an average price of $201,500. Seven of his yearlings fetched $250,000 or more, headed by the $540,000 price tag for Lot 628. The colt was offered by Cambridge Stud and is out of the stakes-winning I Am Invincible mare Fuld’s Bet, whose three foals to race are all winners. They include this season’s Gr.3 Northland Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) placegetter I’m All In. The colt was bought by Hawkesbury trainer Brad Widdup on behalf of owner Mike Gregg’s Mulberry Racing. “He was one of the colts that we found pretty early in the sale,” Widdup said. “We wanted to buy him. We probably didn’t think we’d have to go that high, but it was nice to secure him. “He’s by a nice young stallion and comes off a great farm, so hopefully we can make him a racehorse.” The colt has been paid up for the Karaka Millions series, with Cambridge Stud owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay offering to host the Sword Of State colt at their Karaka property should he make the trip back across the Tasman for the Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) next January. That property was successfully used as a base this year by fellow trans-Tasman raider Konasana, who won Saturday’s Gr.2 Westbury Classic (1400m). “The Karaka Millions could be an option,” Widdup said. “He does actually look like a horse who will get up and run early. He looks like a real Snitzel, speed type of horse. Let’s hope he’s got the quality as well. We had to dig deep to buy him. It was a great effort by all.” Four of Sword Of State’s yearlings at Karaka were bought by Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis, who purchased and raced the stallion through his 11-start, six-win career. Other purchasers of his first-crop progeny included Richard and Will Freedman, Cameron Cooke Bloodstock, Go Racing, Lindsay Park, Ballymore Stables, Ciaron Maher Racing and Busuttin Young Racing. After being an underbidder on the two highest-priced yearlings of the sale, Dean Hawthorne had to wait until the last hour of the Book 1 session on Tuesday afternoon to finally secure one of the fillies on his Karaka wish list. Hawthorne went to $850,000 to purchase Lot 637. Offered by Curraghmore, the filly is by Proisir out of the Tavistock mare Golden Hind. Hawthorne was pleased to finally have one of the high-end lots knocked down in his direction, having come up empty-handed on the $2.4 million Savabeel filly that topped the sale on Monday, as well as the Proisir-Donna Marie filly that fetched $1.1 million earlier on Tuesday afternoon. “We’ve had three cracks here,” Hawthorne said on Tuesday. “We went up to about $1.8 million on the sale-topper and $1 million on the next one. But I thought this filly was right up there with those types of horses.” Bloodstock Agent Dean Hawthorne. Photo: Ange Bridson Hawthorne bought the filly on behalf of his major client Jonathan Munz’s GSA Bloodstock. “This filly’s a belter,” Hawthorne said. “We love Tavistock mares. We unfortunately got into a bidding duel with Ronny Wanless, which isn’t good for the health. But she’s a lovely, lovely filly and we’re glad to get her.” Lot 637 is the first foal out of the unraced Golden Hind, who is a half-sister to the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) winner Planet Rock as well as the Group Three winner and Group One-placed Ringo. “I think she’ll be a 1400m to miler filly,” Hawthorne said. “You can get a fast horse out of Tavistock mares. Tavistock was a sprinter himself. I’m not saying she’ll be a real two-year-old type, but she was an early foal and she might come a bit earlier than we think. Once she matures, I’m hoping she can be a nice Guineas type of filly.” The $850,000 filly headlined an outstanding Book 1 draft for Curraghmore, who sold all of the 18 yearlings they offered across the three days. They achieved an aggregate of $5.8 million, with an average price of $322,222. View the full article

For the second year in a row, Hallmark Stud has struck seven-figure gold at Karaka with a yearling filly by Proisir out of Donna Marie. The Baker family’s Te Kauwhata operation topped the Book 1 sale 12 months ago with a filly that fetched $1.6 million, and they were in the spotlight again on Tuesday with $1.1 million for Lot 564. The remarkable double comes from a mere $20,000 purchase price to secure Donna Marie from the 2014 National Broodmare Sale at the same Karaka sale ring. “We had this filly on the market at $300,000 and we were very excited when she went past the million,” Denny Baker said. The million-dollar fillies are full-sisters to the multiple Group One winner Prowess, who herself was a $230,000 yearling purchase at Karaka in 2021. She went on to earn more than $1.5 million in stakes and was sold for $1.45 million in an online auction on Gavelhouse Plus last year. Donna Marie is a daughter of Don Eduardo, who still holds the all-time record with his own $3.6 million purchase price as a yearling at Karaka in 2000. Donna Marie has now earned her own slice of Karaka history, becoming the fourth broodmare to be represented by multiple million-dollar yearlings. She joins a list that is headed by Grand Echezeaux, who had three of her progeny break the seven-figure mark (Darci Brahma for $1.1 million in 2004, Saperavi for $2.2 million in 2006, and Burgundy for $1.3 million in 2010). Marquise had two (Shower Of Roses for $1.45 million in 2001 and Mutheer for $1.05 million in 2002), and so did Popsy (Maciano for $1.45 million in 2008 and Rock ‘N’ Pop for $1 million in 2010). Cambridge trainer Roger James. Photo: Ange Bridson Tuesday’s million-dollar yearling was bought by Cambridge trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood, who bought Prowess and guided her through a 12-race career that produced eight wins including the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2050m) and $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m). “From the first time I saw this filly, I thought she was exceptional,” James said. “They just don’t come as balanced. I couldn’t fault her. “Orchestral’s owner (Colin Litt) asked me to rate her out of 10, and I said 10. I couldn’t knock her in any respect, and so you shouldn’t be able to at that money. We weren’t keen to keep going, but I’m glad we got her. “Prowess was a big, rangy filly that we had to wait for. This one is so balanced – you could imagine her doing things at the tail end of her two-year-old year and then being very competitive as a spring three-year-old. “Her attitude is bombproof. I saw her the other day. She was tired and almost dead on her feet, she’s been so popular, but the minute she was asked to walk, she had an overstep of about 9 inches. She’s one filly that’s just going to give her guts for you.” The sale has produced some special moments for James, including seeing a full-sister to his stable star Orchestral set a record price for a yearling at Karaka with a sale-topping $2.4 million. But he has endured a frustrating few days from a purchasing perspective. “We’ve found the sale very tough,” he said. “I think it’s probably a reflection on the New Zealand prize-money. We were trying to buy three to syndicate, and normally we’d look at $200,000 to $250,000 and we didn’t even get a bid in. We don’t think we’re usually wrong with values, but we were this year, and I think it’s a reflection on our increased stakes.” Orchestral’s heroics in the $1 million Elsdon Park Aotearoa Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on Saturday provided a timely boost to the buying power of owners Colin and Helen Litt, who will race Tuesday’s million-dollar filly. “It certainly helped,” Wellwood said. “It was good prize-money on Saturday. Colin, Helen and the whole family have been such big supporters of the stable, and they all love Orchestral, and that has egged them along to find the next Orchestral. “We are absolutely chuffed to buy this filly. To be honest, we thought she was the best filly on the grounds. We loved Orchestral’s sister, but she was a bit over our budget. But we are really stoked to have the support from Colin and Helen to get this filly. To be able to buy her and have her come home is amazing. “It is always hard to know how much these high-end fillies are going to make. Obviously she’s a full-sister to Prowess, who we won a couple of Group Ones with. They are always competitive, people all around the world are looking at them, so it’s very hard to value those fillies. We were very fortunate to be able to get her on what was our last bid. “She has the same athleticism as Prowess, but she was probably a bit bigger than this filly and she might come a little bit earlier than Prowess did. This filly, Prowess and the filly that sold last year are all a bit different, but all lovely fillies and I’m sure the Baker family are happy with the family too.” View the full article

New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale attracts buyers from far and wide in search of the classic-type horses this country is famous for producing, and a new name joined that list during the Book 1 session at Karaka this week. Bloodstock agent Craig Ramsay made five purchases for his South African-based client, who was a first-time purchaser at Karaka under the name Betting Entertainment Technologies International Limited. The total spend was $885,000. “They’ve been bought for an emerging international owner based in South Africa who’s making his first move into New Zealand,” Ramsay said. “I used to train and breed horses in South Africa myself, and I’ve been friends with this owner for more than 30 years now. We came here hoping to buy six horses for him this week – three colts and three fillies.” Ramsay’s first purchase was Lot 265, a Savabeel colt from the Trelawney Stud draft that was knocked down for $275,000. The colt is out of the winning Fastnet Rock mare Samoon, who is a half-sister to Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) winner Shamal Wind. Six lots later, Ramsay secured a Tivaci filly for $110,000. Offered by Waikato Stud, the filly is out of a winning half-sister to last month’s Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes (1400m) winner Sethito. Another member of the Waikato Stud draft, Lot 382, was bought by Ramsay for $100,000. The colt is by Savabeel out of the well-related Pins mare Vanilla Essence. Ramsay paid $240,000 for Lot 449 from Riversley Park. The Almanzor colt is out of the Listed Ottawa Stakes (1000m) winner Applegate, who is the dam of six winners from seven foals to race including stakes winners Impendabelle and Cloudy. Lot 510, a Tivaci filly out of the unraced Savabeel mare Caramel Sundae, was bought for $160,000. “We didn’t come here looking for early horses, and I doubt any of our purchases will do much racing before they’re three,” Ramsay said. “Having said that, the Tivaci filly we just bought (Lot 510) had a bit more precociousness. “We bought the Savabeels with the idea of hopefully having Derby and Oaks types horses as three-year-olds. I was drawn to the Tivacis because I thought we might not have to pay quite as much, but they’re bred on very good crosses and we did have to go a bit further to secure them.” While the yearlings were bought with the intention of taking them to South Africa, logistical challenges may see them begin their careers in New Zealand. “The plan is to get the horses to South Africa, but the issue is with transport,” Ramsay said. “We’ve tried three different freight companies and haven’t yet been able to come up with any certainty. So that’s something that needs to be worked out. “In the meantime, I might encourage the owner to leave these horses in New Zealand and have a crack here. Everything is on such a positive note with the racing in this country at the moment. My client races horses in America, the UK and Ireland but not yet in the southern hemisphere apart from South Africa, so this might be an opportunity for him to race somewhere new.” View the full article

Trainer Robert Wellwood says the stable will take Mark Twain’s (NZ) (Shocking) return to racing “day-by-day” with the hope of getting him back to the Melbourne Cup. The talented son of Shocking has completed his rehab following a tendon injury, with a return to their New Zealand stables on the cards shortly. Mark Twain won his way into the 2024 Melbourne Cup by impressively taking out the Roy Higgins Quality last year, but a tendon injury scuppered those plans. Wellwood, who trains alongside Roger James, said Mark Twain’s rehab with Matthew Williams had gone well and had given connections hope of running in the 2025 Melbourne Cup. “He has done his rehab in Melbourne. I’m not sure of the exact date, but he’s due back in the stable and, hopefully, be back for next spring,” Wellwood said. “Terry Henderson and the OTI crew have a great system. They work with Matthew Williams and they’ve had good success before. “I’m sure going forward they will hope it’s done the job for him. He is a class horse and it would be good to have him back at his best. “A horse with an unsoundness issue you have to take day-by-day, but that’s (the Melbourne Cup) is the dream. “We were meant to be there this year, but it’s a long way to go before that.” View the full article

What Sandown Lakeside Races Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171 When Wednesday, January 29, 2025 First Race 3:40pm AEDT Visit Dabble Racing returns to Sandown on Wednesday afternoon for the Lakeside track’s second meeting in the space of four days. Clear skies are forecast throughout the event, which suggests the Good 4 rating will likely hold, while the rail comes out 3m for the entire circuit. The first race is set to commence at 3:40pm AEDT. Best Bet at Sandown: Scottie’s Legacy Scottie’s Legacy is the definition of a mare in from, winning twice and finishing second twice in her four runs this campaign. The four-year-old Almanzor progeny had to sustain a long run to score at Yarra Valley last time out, and despite winning by the barest of margins, she was strong through the line over 1950m. She steps up to 2400m for the first time in her career, but if Scottie’s Legacy produces anything close to what she has recently, the extra distance will only benefit her. Best Bet Race 4 – #7 Scottie’s Leagacy (9) 4yo Mare | T: Mark Walker | J: Blake Shinn (59kg) Next Best at Sandown: Our Queen Our Queen returns to the racetrack for the first time since her dominant debut victory at Bendigo on June 27. That maiden has produced seven subsequent winners, and she won that race by leading throughout in fast time. Craig Williams from barrier two will have no issue holding the rail, and if Our Queen is ready to go after that long layoff, she should be winning again. Next Best Race 3 – #4 Our Queen (2) 4yo Mare | T: Michael Moroney & Glen Thompson | J: Craig Williams (56.5kg) Best Value at Sandown: Street Elite Street Elite has been racing well without winning but gets his chance to break through in the Sandown finale. The five-year-old gelding has finished third in his last three starts after kicking off his campaign with a narrow loss to Intrepid Eagle at Caulfield in December. Barrier 13 is offset by his want to settle towards the rear of the field, and with this 1200m BM70 expected to be run at a genuine clip, the race sets up nicely for Street Elite to be charging home down the heart of the track. What Kembla Grange Races Where Kembla Grange Racecourse – Princes Highway, Kembla Grange NSW 2526 When Wednesday, January 29, 2025 First Race 2:20pm AEDT Visit Dabble NSW racing returns to Kembla Grange Racecourse on Wednesday afternoon, with a quickfire seven-part program lined up for the Illawarra region. The rail reverts to the true position the entire circuit for the meeting, and although the track is rated a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, warm summer conditions should allow an upgrade into the Good range at some stage throughout the day. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 2:20pm local time. Best Bet at Kembla Grange: Eastern Front Eastern Front returns after a 173-day spell and a change of stables, with the son of Russian Revolution set to debut for the Brad Widdup barn. The four-year-old gelding has impressed since his arrival, clearing out to score comfortably in a recent barrier trial at Hawkesbury on January 20. Zac Wadick will lob into a handy position from stall three, and provided he can unleash his devastating turn-of-speed, punters can expect Eastern Front to figure in this Class 1 contest. Best Bet Race 2 – #1 Eastern Front (3) 4yo Gelding | T: Brad Widdup | J: Zac Wadick (1.5kg) (58.5kg) Next Best at Kembla Grange: Wild Thoughts The Kerry Parker-trained Wild Thoughts has only been sighted once at the barrier trials heading into this first-up assignment, cruising through the wire at Warwick Farm on January 20. The son of So You Think couldn’t have been more impressive under Jay Ford, idling up to his rivals to get within a half-length of Too Many Kisses. Ford should slot into a mid-field position with cover, and although this guy lacks race-day fitness compared to some key opposition, Wild Thoughts should be right in this at a good price with BlondeBet. Coeur Volante. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) Mike Moroney and Glen Thompson have been patient with promising Proisir mare Coeur Volante, who is set to kick off her latest campaign in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Sandown on Saturday. The four-year-old has not raced since finishing sixth in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m) at Eagle Farm in June. Thompson explained that after dealing with some minor issues, the mare had an extended break in Queensland. “She is in good order, jumping out well at Flemington and Werribee,” Thompson said. “We took her to Brisbane, but she didn’t do well in the spring, so we wanted to give her a good break. She was up there for around a dozen weeks. “She looks good, she’s not big but she’s held onto her condition and hopefully that time pays off.” Coeur Volante showed early promise, including a strong first-up win in the Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) at The Valley in September 2023 and a victory in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) a month later at Caulfield, before her fourth-place finish in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m). Saturday’s run will give her trainers a clearer idea of where she will head this campaign, but the hope is that she can line up for the Group 1 mares’ races in Sydney. “I think the Coolmore (Classic) has been spoken about but it’s one race at a time,” Thompson said. “She needs to be winning something first before we go to a race like that.” Horse racing news View the full article

Another Wil ridden by Jamie Kah winning the Group 2 The Damien Oliver. (Photo by Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Another Wil is poised for his first-up run in elite-level company after impressing connections in his Cranbourne jumpout on Monday. The Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 8 has been targeted as his autumn starting point. The five-year-old, a three-time stakes winner, narrowly missed out on Group 1 glory in the spring, finishing second to Kimochi in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on November 16. “We moved him up to the 1200-metre (jumpout) to get on better ground,” explained Jack Turnbull, assistant to Ciaron Maher, to Racing.com. “He was heat one and Celine (Gaudray) came in and rode him and he put in a nice piece of work. We’re really pleased with where he’s at. He’ll do something on the Monday leading into that (Orr Stakes) on the bridle. (His) weight’s good and he looks good and he was a head away from being a Group 1 winner last prep, so hopefully we can hit the ground running.” Another Wil is set for an ambitious preparation provided his form holds up into the autumn. “He gives us every indication that he is a future Group 1 horse, but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way,” Turnbull added. “Hopefully he remains sound and in the right head space. “He’s one that loses weight at times, we’re mindful of that, but at this point of time he’s in a reasonable spot and hopefully that holds.” Another Wil is currently a $6 chance for the CF Orr Stakes with horse racing bookmakers. Duke De Sessa ridden by Harry Coffey winning the 2024 Caulfield Cup. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Ciaron Maher’s Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) winner, Duke De Sessa, is set to begin his 2025 campaign in the Group 3 TS Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield on February 8. “He had a really quiet jump-out for his first when he went back and he was held onto, but today (Monday) he did a little over 1200 (metres), so he’ll be right to kick off in the Carlyon Cup, which is a mile race at Caulfield,” assistant trainer Jack Turnbull told Racing.com. “He’ll probably head to Sydney after that for a race like the Parramatta Cup over 1900 metres, with his main aim being the Tancred (Stakes).” Duke De Sessa has not been seen since finishing ninth in the Group 1 VRC Champions Stakes (2000m) on November 9. currently has Duke De Sessa as a $12 chance for the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) on March 29. The talented filly settled just off the pace before producing a strong finishing burst to claim victory over Lazzago and Brazen Style. The win cemented Estriella’s reputation as a rising star, adding to her impressive record in a race renowned for producing future Group 1 contenders. 2023: Rich Fortune finishes the best Rich Fortune showed a blistering turn of foot to run over the top of the leaders in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes. Williams gave Rich Fortune a great ride to weave a passage through the field and storm home late in the final 200m of the race, with the daughter of Rich Enuff earning her first bit of black-type at her third career start. Queen Of The Ball looked to have the race all parcelled up – however – Williams and Rich Fortune had other ideas as they flew on by and nabbed her in the shadows of the post, with Cythera running into third. Rich Fortune jumped as a $13 outsider with online bookmakers, while the other favoured runners, Dusse and She Dances proved to lack the quality of the first half-a-dozen. 2022: Argentia produces breathtaking victory The 2022 Kevin Hayes Stakes was taken out in breath-taking fashion by rising star Argentia, in what was a last stride victory. Jockey Mark Zahra took the filly back to a clear last from the outside alley before coming to the outside in the straight to unleash a powerful finish in what was only her third time at the races. The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained put her name up in lights when winning impressively on debut down the Flemington straight. She then disappointed when starting favourite at Moonee Valley, but had excuses, as she pulled up lame on that occasion. The Peter Le Grand Stakes win was all the more impressive considering the father-son training duo didn’t have her fully wound up for a first-up win.
