TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) hopeful Tale Of The Gypsy. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Promising juvenile Tale Of The Gypsy will head to Ellerslie on Sunday for the first time with an aim to return to the venue later this month for a shot at a million-dollar prize. The Written By filly entered her debut last Saturday at Te Aroha with no trials, but for a lack of experience she made up in raw talent, overcoming the outside barrier draw and a three-wide trip to score comfortably over her stablemate Miss Moet All. Tale Of The Gypsy earned $10,360 in prizemoney for the victory, placing her currently at 22 on the order of entry (18 on conditional entry) for the $1 million Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), to be run at Ellerslie on January 25. A strong result on Sunday would greatly enhance her chances of contesting the race, and her trainer Stephen Marsh is hopeful she can secure her spot despite the quick back-up. “That is very much our aim, I thought she was very good on debut,” Marsh said. “They haven’t looked after us and she’s got another outside gate again being seven of seven, and she’s going to need a bit of luck being her first time at Ellerslie. “It’s a big ask backing up after eight days, but she’s got the right temperament and she’s a strong filly. “We’ll just need some luck from the draw.” Horse racing news View the full article

Helene Feeling steams to Group 3 January Cup victory. Photo: HKJC Danny Shum surged to the top of the 2024/25 Hong Kong trainers’ championship with a quartet at Happy Valley on Wednesday, crowned by Helene Feeling’s triumph in the HK$4.2 million Group 3 January Cup Handicap (1800m). Shum dominated the undercard with Judy’s Great, Happy Soul and Eternal Fortune, rising to the top of the trainers’ standings with Helene Feeling’s (117lb) victory under Harry Bentley, who drove the former British galloper to victory in Happy Valley’s only Group contest of the season. With 27 wins, Shum leads Pierre Ng (26), Mark Newnham (24) and David Hayes (23) after 36 of 88 scheduled meetings. “It’s just amazing, I’m very happy,” Shum said. “All four horses ran great races and the jockeys did a brilliant job. “Helene Feeling likes Happy Valley more than Sha Tin, but unfortunately there aren’t many races for him here. I had to run him back at Sha Tin otherwise he would have had a big break and lost his fitness.” Second to Helios Express in last season’s HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m), Helene Feeling settled in ninth place in a moderately-run race behind pace-setters Flamingo Trillion (117lb) and The Golden Scenery (127lb) before Bentley made his move approaching the home turn, fanning into clear running. Driven to the line, the Sioux Nation gelding prevailed by half a length over last year’s January Cup winner Happy Together (135lb) and La City Blanche (128lb), who charged from the tail of the field to claim third. The overall time was 1:49.19. Bentley said: “They’re (Group 3 wins) not easy to come by and really glad to take the opportunity and kick him home. He’s a very good horse. He was a real contender for the (Hong Kong) Derby not so long ago, so clearly he has that natural class and he’s run a couple of really good races here before, finishing third in this race last year. “So, we know he goes around the track. The wide draw (barrier nine) was always going to be a little bit tricky just get a nice position through the race and we were going very slowly early doors. He probably didn’t come around the bend all that well but fair play to the horse, he really knuckled down in the straight.” Shum combined with Dylan Mo and rank outsider Judy’s Great, Vincent Ho and Happy Soul and Hugh Bowman and Eternal Fortune. Bowman and Vincent Ho both slotted doubles. Bowman combined with Caspar Fownes and Mighty Commander. Formerly trained by Lucinda Boyd in Australia, the Artie Schiller gelding prevailed at his eighth Hong Kong start. Ho completed his brace aboard Francis Lui’s Speed Dragon. Zac Purton moved to within seven wins of equalling Douglas Whyte’s record mark of 1,813 victories in Hong Kong as a jockey with Chris So-trained Firefoot’s success. “Things haven’t gone that smoothly tonight. I had to wait for this winner and he just got into a race where there wasn’t much speed with a light weight (120lb). I was able to control things and he deserved to win, he’s been quite honest,” said Purton, who has 66 victories for the season. Pegasus General scored his first win since March, 2023 when Derek Leung lifted the Brazilian Group 1 victor to success. Having his first start for Cody Mo, the seven-year-old had dropped from 78 to 38 in the ratings, but showed plenty of fight for Leung. David Eustace-trained Fortune Whiskey, a three-time winner as a two-year-old in New Zealand, notched his first victory in Hong Kong by triumphing under Matthew Poon. Magic Millions Day will be held on the Gold Coast. Photo: Darren Winningham Racing Queensland and the Gold Coast Turf Club advise that The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday will be staged at Aquis Park on Saturday. Earlier on Thursday morning, senior jockeys galloped on the course proper and deemed it safe to ride, including the remediated area near the 500m mark. Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards also inspected the track and have approved the 10-race feature card proceeding at Gold Coast Turf Club. Queensland Jockeys’ Association General Manager Glen Prentice said the feedback from those who rode this morning was overwhelmingly positive. “All six riders were unanimous in their view that the track rode well and will be safe for participants,” Mr Prentice said. Saturday’s 10-race program is set to commence at 12:30pm AEST, headlined by the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) and Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m). Horse racing news View the full article

Wexford Stables are in an enviable position as far as quality three-year-olds go, with an abundance of gilt-edged prospects in contention for summer age group features. Two of them will step out at Ellerslie on Sunday with Sought After (NZ) (Tivaci) to take on a competitive line-up in the Sistema (1200m) and Checkmate (NZ) (Mongolian Khan) will be in action in the Cloudsoft Accounting (1500m). The Waikato Stud-bred and raced Sought After is already locked in to represent the Matamata farm in the inaugural running of the $3.5 million NZB Kiwi (1500m) while fellow slot holder Wexford have yet to make their call. Sought After was an impressive debut winner at Taupo, a luckless fifth at Te Rapa and was then sixth in the Gr.2 Sarten Memorial (1400m) before bouncing back strongly to finish runner-up in a return to the Hamilton track. “He never handled the ground at Te Aroha and that was his worst run, but back on the good ground at Te Rapa he quickened well,” said Andrew Scott, who trains in partnership with Lance O’Sullivan. “We’ll put a barrier blanket on him at Ellerslie, he’s been a little slow away and Masa (Hashizume) thought it would be a good idea to help him at least get away on terms, so he’s not on the back foot, especially over 1200m. “You can’t give them too much of a head start and he should sprint well on Sunday.” Checkmate, to be ridden by Warren Kennedy, has won two of his four starts and was most recently third in the Gr.2 Auckland Guineas (1400m). “He spent a good part of the race three wide and they didn’t go much of a gallop, but he was strong to the line,” Scott said. The son of Mongolian Khan is in the mix for the Kiwi, as are a number of other stablemates. “He’s back out to the 1500m and hasn’t drawn that well a lot will depend what happens and how he quickens home as to whether we go a little further and get out to the middle distances or concentrate on the shorter races,” Scott said. “We’re keeping all options open, Tristar (NZ) (Exceedance) is running on Friday (at Tauranga) and if she bounces back then she’ll come into consideration as well. “Prosegur (NZ) (Proisir), who runs in the Karaka Millions Mile (3YO, 1600m), is another and there’s Sethito (NZ) (Super Seth) as well. “We don’t want to pigeonhole them and want to get them all their opportunity to express their ability and try to do the right thing by the horses. They will tell us where they’re best placed.” Tristar wasn’t helped by a slow getaway when unplaced in the Gr.2 Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) and has since been freshened with a trial to ready her for Friday’s Christine & Jana Ray White Greerton (1200m). The stable will also have smart four-year-olds Tanganyika (NZ) (Ace High) and Tomodachi (NZ) (Tarzino) in action at Tauranga in the MJ @ Ray White Greerton (1400m) and the Social Club Greerton (1200m) respectively. “Both of them have been patiently handled and showed a lot at three,” Scott said. “Tanganyika stays in the same grade and goes up in weight in a stronger field and he’s very honest, a really genuine racehorse.” He was a last-start winner at Te Rapa while Tomodachi won three on the bounce last preparation to earn a trip to Queensland and finished midfield in her only outing at Ipswich. “She had a good rest after Brisbane and she’s coming to hand well with two trials,” Scott said. “She will keep getting better with age and more experience as well, we think a lot of her.” View the full article

Trainers Graeme and Debbie Rogerson were left perplexed following Domain Ace’s (NZ) (Swiss Ace) subpar performance at Ellerslie last month, and they are hoping their $3.5 million NZB Kiwi (1500m) contender can return to form at Trentham on Saturday. The three-year-old son of Swiss Ace was announced as the Canterbury Jockey Club’s NZB Kiwi slot runner last month, and he didn’t reassure their selection several weeks later when beating just the one runner home in the Gr.2 Auckland Guineas (1400m) on Boxing Day. He was given a full veterinary examination following the race, but nothing untoward was found, and the Rogerson’s are trying to put that run behind them. “He didn’t hit-out on Ellerslie that day, a lot of them didn’t,” Graeme Rogerson said. “The vet came out and we couldn’t find a thing wrong with him after his last run. Craig (Grylls, jockey) said he asked him to quicken up and he didn’t respond. I don’t know what to put it down to, but we will see and hopefully he is back on track.” Domain Ace will face a daunting task this weekend in the Gr.2 Top Kat Roofing Levin Classic (1400m) where he will come up against dominant three-year-old Savaglee. “That Savaglee is a very good horse, he has certainly got all the attributes of Savabeel,” said Rogerson, who trained his Champion sire. “But you can’t win if you are not in. We are hoping that he gets back on target for the NZB Kiwi.” Stablemate, and former New Zealand Horse of the Year, Sharp ‘N’ Smart will also head south to tackle Saturday’s Gr.1 Harcourt Thorndon Mile (1600m). “He looks tremendous,” Rogerson said. “He has been a work in progress but I thought his run the other day (third in the Gr.2 Manawatu Challenge Stakes, 1400m) was very good. “He is well-weighted with 55kg on his back, and I think it is a nice race for him.” Rogerson’s Trentham team also comprises Ferrando two-year-old Mission Complete, who will make his debut in the Listed Star Group Wellesley Stakes (1100m), and Chaource, who will contest the Pullman Hotel Melbourne City Centre 1400. “He (Mission Complete) is a lovely horse in the making,” Rogerson said. “I think he could be a classic three-year-old, he is a beautiful horse. “He only had the one trial and I thought we were going down, so what better place to give him some education than Wellington. “The other horse (Chaource) is a half-sister to Mascarpone, and she is a very good mare. She was unlucky at Ellerslie. She flew home and ran third.” Meanwhile, Rogerson will line-up Solidify and Black Opal at Tauranga on Friday, and will be represented by Elegant Jazz at Ellerslie on Sunday. “Solidify went a nice race (runner-up) last start,” Rogerson said. “He is getting ready for the Aotearoa Classic ($1 million, 1600m). He is a good, handy horse. It is a nice race, and he is well in at the weights at 52kg. “Elegant Jazz is probably just below the top class. That is a very good field, but we will see what happens. Her run was okay last time at Auckland. She got caught wide and everything didn’t go to plan.” View the full article

Odds Bookmakers News Field Past Winners Canonbury Stakes Group Three Betting Guide Date: Saturday, February 1, 2025 Location: Rosehill Gardens – Sydney, New South Wales Prize Money: $250,000 Distance: 1100m The Canonbury Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-old colts and geldings, hosted by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill Gardens. First contested in 1930 and won by Lightning March, the Canonbury Stakes has a rich history, evolving into a key early-season event for future champions. Traditionally held closer to the start of the juvenile racing season, the Canonbury Stakes now serves as an important lead-up to the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m). Run over 1100m under Set Weights and Penalties conditions, the Canonbury Stakes offers a lucrative prize pool of $250,000 in 2025. Initially a Listed race, it gained Group 3 status in 2015, cementing its importance on the Australian racing calendar. The Canonbury Stakes has been a stepping stone for many notable winners, including legends like Tulloch (1956), Fine And Dandy (1958), and contemporary stars such as Vancouver (2015) and Best Of Bordeaux (2022). It has also been a milestone race for trainers like Gai Waterhouse, who, in partnership with Adrian Bott, secured her 10th Canonbury Stakes victory in 2024. 2025 Canonbury Stakes betting odds 2025 Canonbury Stakes odds are currently unavailable. With several of their juveniles starring in the two-year-old races in the lead up to the Golden Slipper, the Waterhouse & Bott team were confident heading in. The son of Snitzel was returning for his second race preparation after finishing third behind his stablemate Espionage in the Group 3 Breeders Plate in September, 2023. King Of Roseau ($4.60) led the field up to the home corner before Prost took over at the 200m mark and raced to a clear margin, with Fearless running home down the outside into second and the race favourite Traffic Warden ($3.40) battled on for third. An awkward stride after letting down by the runner-up hindered his chances of winning, but nothing really worried the winner as he ran over the line to win by a half-length. 2023: Red Resistance runs rivals ragged Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s dominance of the Canonbury Stakes continued, with Brett Prebble guiding Red Resistance to a strong win in the group 3 feature. The victory over the odds on favourite Kings Gambit, by just over a length, was setup by a strong start, which saw Prebble guide his charge to the rail. Red Resistance had plenty of support before the race, jumping as the second favourite ($6). 2022: Best of Bordeaux best of juveniles Kacy Fogden notched up her first Sydney metropolitan win in Saturday’s Group 3 Canonbury Stakes, as Best Of Bordeaux led all of the way in the 1100m event. The two-year-old colt by Snitzel started a $6 chance on debut off the back of a four-length trial win at the Sunshine Coast on January 11. The colt was a $425,000 purchase at the 2021 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sales, and looked to be on track to make that back for connections after Saturday’s dominant 4.6-length victory. Ridden by Sam Clipperton, Best Of Bordeaux was quick out of the gates to lead the field of five and was able to sustain the fast speed to win stylishly, stopping the clock at 1:03.91. 2021: Zethus arrives in time Rachel King admits she was second guessing herself when Zethus dived at favourite Home Affairs in a thrilling finish to the Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill. Less than 24 hours earlier, King had endured a series of near-misses when six of her seven rides at the Canterbury night meeting finished second, three of them in tight finishes. Zethus appeared set to suffer the same fate as Home Affairs shot to a handy lead halfway up the straight but the Godolphin youngster pinned back his ears and nailed him on the line. King need not have worried as Zethus ($6) stuck his neck out when it mattered to win the Canonbury Stakes (1100m) by a half-head over Home Affairs ($2.50) with Sing A Love Song ($13) third. A colt born Jan. 6 at Castleton Lyons near Lexington is the first reported foal for Taiba (Gun Runner–Needmore Flattery, by Flatter). Bred by Castleton Lyons & Kilboy Estate, the chestnut colt is out of Wecallherqueenmary (Exaggerator), whose unraced dam is a full-sister to late champion Speightstown. Castleton Lyons purchased the mare for $200,000 at the 2021 Keeneland November sale. “He's a good foal, a lot of quality,” said Castleton Lyons's Pat Hayes. “He looks athletic and more like Taiba than the mare. Very good shoulder and hip, powerful forearm and a lot of bone. We're very happy with him.” Taiba won the GI Pennsylvania Derby, GI Santa Anita Derby, and GI Malibu Stakes during his 3-year-old campaign in 2022, as well as finished third to Flightline in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. He was a $1.7-million Fasig-Tipton 2-year-old purchase by Zedan Racing Stables and bred 200 mares in his first book. Taiba will stand the 2025 season for $30,000 at Spendthrift Farm. Cathy Sheppard, the widow of Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard, was found dead Monday in a hotel room in Dania Beach, Florida. Her passing was confirmed by the Broward County (Fla) Sherriff's Offices (BSO). She was 69. The Sheppards were married in 1990 and Jonathan Sheppard passed away on Aug. 29, 2023. According to a spokesperson for the BSO, “deputies in Dania Beach responded to an unresponsive person at a hotel in the 100 block of Southwest 18th Avenue. Upon arrival they located a deceased adult female. BSO's Homicide and Crime Scene units responded to investigate. The Broward County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.” The address released by the BSO is the address of the Dania Beach Hotel. Until a full investigation is concluded, several questions remain unanswered. Maria Montgomery Riggs, Cathy Sheppard's sister, said that Cathy lived in Fort Lauderdale. She said the authorities have not told her what the cause of death was. “This doesn't make any sense to me,” Riggs said. “What was she doing in a hotel in Dania Beach?” According to a post on Cathy Sheppard's Facebook page from 2011, she rode her first race at Delaware Park when she was 16. Her father, she wrote, was a trainer and she was raised on a horse farm in Delaware. In 1985, she switched to steeplechase racing. Her life and career changed when she met Sheppard and was hired to gallop Storm Cat, who was a Grade I winner at two in 1985. “He was very tough to stay on in the beginning of his two year old year,” she wrote. “I was fairly athletic and just talked to him all the time. I became very friendly with (owner) Mr. (William T.) Young and after Storm Cat was retired, I followed him to Lexington to study bloodstock.” She wrote that she talked Young out of selling Storm Cat. “When I married Jonathan in 1990, I started looking into animal rights,” she wrote. “I do not enjoy racing like I used to. I'm seeing too much cruelty these days. I dearly love all animals, and most people.” According to Equibase records, Sheppard last rode in 1992. She is survived by Joseph Herman, a son from a previous marriage. By Brigette Solomon Mark Purdon makes a return to race day driving with stable stars Oscar Bonavena and Don’t Stop Dreaming at Cambridge’s Flying Stakes night tonight. The Matamata-based Purdon hasn’t driven Oscar Bonavena since they ran third in the Renwick Farms Dominion Trot at Addington in November behind Just Believe and the last time he drove Don’t Stop Dreaming in this country was the 2023 New Zealand Derby won by Merlin. Oscar Bonavena was a winner of the Group 3 IRT Cambridge Flying Stakes back in 2020 when it was raced over 1609 metres. This year the race is over 2200 metres (7.49pm), and Oscar Bonavena (8) starts from the outside of the barrier and opens as a very short, fixed price favourite ($1.20) in the eight horse field. The country’s leading driver Blair Orange has driven him in his last four starts and the nine-year-old entire heads into the race off the back of a third placing in the Group 1 National Trot at Alexandra Park on New Year’s Eve. While the National Trot winner Muscle Mountain was brilliant in winning the event by five lengths, Oscar Bonavena put in an impressive effort, going some way in redeeming himself after breaking in the score up and losing a considerable amount of ground, to hold on and finish third after facing the breeze three wide over the final 700 metres. “Blair (Orange) has said he was just a little keen behind the mobile before he galloped, and he still went on to run a great race,” says Purdon, “he seems very bright and has taken no ill harm from the tough run and has just been trained quietly since.” Since the beginning of his campaign in October, Oscar Bonavena has raced consistently well and prior to his third on New Year’s Eve had won three successive races, including a victory over Just Believe in the New Zealand Trotting Free For All on Show Day. The entire has also commenced stud duties this season, something which Purdon believes may have been beneficial to him on the track. “He’s still currently being collected from to serve mares and has actually had a busy week,” says Purdon, “he’s just such a professional to work with though, he’s great to work with and knows his job when he’s on the track and I think possibly that serving as a stallion might have made him a little better.” In the feature pace of the evening, Mark and Canterbury-based training partner, son Nathan line up Don’t Stop Dreaming (5) in the TAB Cambridge Pacers Flying Stakes Mobile Pace (8.14pm). He’s currently a $2.10 favourite with Republican Party at $2.40. “There’s only six runners in the race but it’s a nice field and I don’t think it will be easy,” says Purdon, “Kango (3) was very good in his last start and may be hard to run down if he leads, and of course there’s Invercargill and Auckland Cup winner Republican Party who will be tough to beat.” After finishing second in the New Zealand Cup behind Swayzee, Don’t Stop Dreaming was seventh in his most recent race, the Auckland Cup on New Year’s Eve. He was buried five back on the fence, unable to obtain clear running until entering the home straight before running on well. “He’s not an overly big horse and I’ve been kind to him since his Auckland Cup run, he’s been working together with Oscar and is bright and well,” says Mark Purdon, “it’s hard to say where he’ll end up in running but I’ll roll forward early and have a look at what happens with the runners inside us and go from there but he’ll need to be good tonight to be a chance.” Racing action gets underway tonight at 5.44pm and with the meeting also including the Waikato Summer Trotting and Pacing Cups. Jose D’Angelo Joins TDN Writers’ Room Podcast
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in The Rest of the World
In racing circles, trainer Jose D'Angelo might not yet be a “household name,” but that's not going to last much longer. In this country for about five years, the native of Venezuela is coming off a stellar 2024 in which he won 140 races, including his first Grade I with Howard Wolowitz (Munnings) in the Aristocrat Franklin-Simpson Stakes. And it looks like 2025 might be even better. He has a stable full of potential stars that includes 'TDN Rising Star' Guns Loaded (Gun Runner), the winner of last Saturday's Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park which kicked off the Florida series at the track. How has D'Angelo come so far and so fast and what does he expect from Guns Loaded once the competition becomes stiffer? Those were among the questions we asked when he appeared on this week's TDN Writers' Room podcast presented by Keeneland. He was the Gainesway Guest of the Week. “I am literally living the dream here,” D'Angelo said. “I came from Venezuela with so many goals and so many dreams. Like most horsemen, my main goal is to win the [Kentucky] Derby. But in order to do that you have to go step by step, win races and let people know you know how to win big races. Very few people will win the Derby, but you have to make your name, build up your reputation and make sure people trust you. I feel like we are doing that.” His assistant is his father, Francisco D'Angelo, who was also a leading trainer in Venezuela. Jose D'Angelo says they make a great team. “I learned everything from my father,” he said. “He was champion in Venezuela. He won lot of Grade 1's over there and was leading trainer there many times. I feel like the team that we have is strong team because he let me go out on my own with my horses. He stays here in Florida, so that I can go to Saratoga, to Keeneland. I know my horses back home in Florida are getting great care with him.” As far as Guns Loaded goes, he didn't exactly beat a strong field in the Mucho Macho Man, but the colt is exceptionally well bred and should do better as the races get longer. How excited does he have D'Angelo? “He is a special horse,” D'Angelo said. “When I decided which 2-year-olds to take to Saratoga I brought just him and one other horse. So that tells you how different he was compared to my other 2-year-olds. When I worked him for the first time, I knew he had talent, but not the speed that he showed. So that's why I ran him at seven furlongs the first time out because he's by Gun Runner out of a Bernardini mare. So everything says that he should go long. When we worked him, he never showed this speed that he has. It turns out he's very fast.” He continued: “So now talking about the Mucho Macho Man, I know the fractions were not fast and I know the horse won by only a neck, but after the race finished, [jockey] Luis [Saez] came to me and he said, 'Hey Jose, those other horses were never going to pass us. I had so much horses.'” In our weekly breeding spotlight section the hosts looked at the WinStar stallion and Randy Moss favorite Two Phil's. Elsewhere on the podcast, which is also sponsored by 1/ST Racing, the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders' Association, West Point Thoroughbreds, and XBTV.com, the team of Zoe Cadman, Bill Finley and Randy Moss talked about the sizzling win by the Bob Baffert-trained Barnes (Into Mischief) in the GII San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita, as well as the impressive performance earlier on the same card by his stablemate Rodriguez (Authentic), who earned 'TDN Rising Star' badge. Also, the program covered the first 2025 edition of the TDN Derby Top 12, which is authored by T.D. Thornton. Last but not least, the sad story was related of War Envoy (War Front), a winner at Royal Ascot, being in poor physical condition and having to be rescued by the authorities from a Franklin County, Kentucky farm led to the panelists imploring the industry for what seemed like the 500th time that it must do better by its horses.
