  1. The Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) announced on Thursday that its chief executive, Claire Sheppard, is to step down in the autumn following eight years in the role, with the recruitment process for a new CEO already underway. “While working at the TBA, I am very proud of what the organisation has achieved for British breeders and the industry over the last eight years,” read a statement from Sheppard, who has been responsible for developing initiatives such as the Great British Bonus Scheme during her time in the role, as well as having to navigate the breeding sector through Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic. “I am extremely grateful to the TBA's loyal and highly knowledgeable team who have taught me so much during my tenure and have been extremely fortunate to work alongside two committed chairmen over that period, including Philip Newton and former chair, Julian Richmond Watson. I am very grateful to them, and to all the TBA trustees for the ongoing support they have given me.” Sheppard added, “It has been a huge privilege to lead the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association during what has been a period of real change and challenge for the industry as the sport develops and implemented shared strategies for a sustainable future. While there are still significant challenges ahead, I am confident we are moving in the right direction, and I will be leaving the TBA with the right chair, team and trustees to navigate these. “I wish the board every success in the future to ensure the contribution made by the breeding sector are supported and acknowledged at both government and wider industry level as fundamental to the growth and future sustainability of this wonderful sport. “The TBA chief executive role is incredibly rewarding, however I feel the time is right for me to step back from a full-time career. I will remain with the TBA until a suitable replacement has been identified and to allow for a smooth transition.” TBA chairman Philip Newton said, “The TBA has been very fortunate to have had Claire Sheppard's dedication and expertise at the helm for the past eight years. She has championed the interests of the breeding sector with determination and persistence, navigating challenges in a complex stakeholder and political environment. “Leading an organisation at the top of any sport requires total commitment, focus, and enormous amounts of energy, and Claire has delivered all of these. I, and the TBA Board, would like to thank her and wish her all the best in the future.” The post Claire Sheppard to Step Down as Chief Executive of the TBA appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 2. By Adam Hamilton Classy Victorian trotter Arcee Phoenix will return for another crack at the $650,000 TAB Trot at Cambridge’s Night of Champions on April 4. Excited connections cemented a deal with Duncan McPherson to race in the Aldebaran Park slot, just as they did last year. Arcee Phoenix was one of four Victorians who contested last year’s TAB Trot, finishing fourth behind Just Believe, Callmethebreeze and Queen Elida. Queen Elida will also return, while Im Ready Jet looks likely to give Victoria a third runner this year. Im Ready Jet is raced by Pat Driscoll, who used his slot on the sidelined Callmethebreeze last year. Driscoll and trainer Andy Gath are awaiting Im Ready Jet’s second-up race at Melton on Saturday night when she clashes again with Queen Elida in the Group 1 Sumthingaboutmaori Mares’ Trotting Free-For-All (2760m). “At this stage she’s booked and going, but we’ve got the luxury of seeing how she goes this week before absolutely locking things in,” Gath said. Back to Arcee Phoenix and he showed signs of his best form when a good third to Keayang Chucky in blistering time in the Group 1 Hammerhead Mile at Menangle last Saturday week. The Chris Svanosio trained gelding faces a small but select field in the City Of Melton Scotch Notch Memorial Trot (1720m) at Melton on Saturday night. Arcee Phoenix is a $2.20 second favourite to turn the tables on Keayang Chucky (gate six, $1.85) from their Hammerhead clash. “We’ve had a handshake agreement with the Arcee Phoenix team for a while now and locked it all away this week,” McPherson said. “He ran such a great last year in a stronger race (TAB Trot) and we’re confident he’ll be right in the finish again.” Australia looks set to have five of the eight runners in the TAB Trot at Cambridge on April 4. Along with the three Victorians, NSW-trained Inter Dominion winner The Locomotive has a slot and the connections of emerging Queensland star Not As Promised are believed to be close to landing on a deal. Earlier this week boom New Zealand trotter Bet N Win confirmed his place in the line-up. He will run in the slot owned by the Breckon Racing Syndicate, brothers George and Andrew Breckon, Richard Cole and the Odds On Syndicate. The winner of 11 from 19, Bet N Win was bred by Breckon Farms, with the Breckon Racing Syndicate part of the horse’s large ownership group. He is a $2.70 favourite on the futures market on the TAB, following his narrow but very impressive win over Muscle Mountain in last Friday’s Group 1 Fred Shaw Memorial New Zealand Trotting Championships at Addington. 3. Every month HRNZ selects a Breeder and Owner of the Month award. It is chosen randomly with the only proviso being that your horse must have won a race during the month. In February Brian and Marie Borcoskie were picked as “Breeders of the Month” following Tessamae’s win at Rangiora on February 6 and Rodney and Deirdre Stewart were selected as “Owners of the Month” after Hayley Mhor’s win at Alexandra Park on February 28. Breeder of the Month : Brian and Marie Borcoskie For the Borcoskies Tessamae’s win was especially poignant. “It’s always very satisfying to win any race and especially so on this occasion as Brian passed away (on March 7, 2025),” says Marie, “so this was to be his final win.” While Brian and Marie bred Tessamae she is trained and was driven by son Brent Borcoskie. The Borcoskies were on course for the Amberley Trotting Club’s meeting at Rangiora for what was Tessamae’s maiden win. The family has a long association with the club, having served on the committee. Brian also served as president and patron. They have bred many horses over the years including Silk Brocade who won the Ladyship Mile at Harold Park in Sydney as well as the 1999 New Zealand Premier Mares Championships at Addington and Brownie who won nine in this country between 2008-2012 and 17 overall. More recently they also bred Jaffa Josh (Auckland Reactor – Silk Rose) who won 20 races, mainly in the USA. Owner of the Month : Rodney and Deirdre Stewart The Stewarts were also on course to see Hayley Mhor’s victory at Alexandra Park. “After 22 starts, some of which were close seconds and thirds, it was gratifying to see her win,” says Rodney Stewart. The Stewarts have had an interest in a number of horses, either individually or with others, and have raced them predominantly at Alexandra Park and Cambridge. The best of the horses were four-race winner In A Frenzy, Eyres Abovetheground (5 wins) and Kip Keino who had 11 wins on both sides of the Tasman. “Sunny Pegasus (2 wins) is also now competing with distinction as a show horse.” “We were roped in to harness racing by Richard and Julija Brosnan being part of the syndicate ownership of In A Frenzy,” says Stewart, “we intend to continue owning and racing horses having two yearling geldings by Marcoola and Locharburn at a farm we have an interest in.” Congratulations to this month’s winners and your plaques are on their way. 4. By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk As popular victories go Ambleside Drive’s win at Addington last night was right up there. At start number 62, the Auckland Reactor five-year-old mare finally broke through in Race 2, the Book Now for Owners Night 28th March Mobile Pace. For the Robertson family who bred, train and race the mare, it’s been a long time coming. Her debut was at Motukarara in April 2022. “I was starting to lose the faith,” said Peter Robertson who trains in partnership with son Mitchell. He told Harness Unhinged’s Nigel Armstrong post race, “we’ve always known she had the ability to win the race and it never worked out.” Pre-race Robertson was concerned about backing up Ambleside Drive after a tough fourth at Motukarara last Sunday. But she started the outright favourite and performed accordingly. From the mobile driver John Dunn got the one-one early before pressing on to the lead at around the 1600 metre mark. She was three lengths clear with a lap to go. “Every horse has their day and today is the day for Ambleside Drive – she’s too good, ” said commentator Andy McCook as she held to win by just over a length. Dunn was clearly elated to get the elusive win for a horse that had had 22 previous placings. “She has had some ragged runs and a few placings along the way before this win,” said Dunn, “I love winning races like that.” And he wasn’t alone. The Robertsons had no shortage of well-wishers after the race though Peter Robertson wasn’t getting too hyped up. “I wouldn’t get too excited but it’s good she has won one anyway.” A double on the night with Ann Sophie and Jaccka Baylis took Michael House to 44 training wins for 2025. He is leading the premiership by 24 from Steve and Amanda Telfer. Another feature last night was Matt Purvis training the quinella in the Majestic Horse Floats Mobile Pace with Almighty Clever (Blair Orange) and Oneloveonelife (Carter Dalgety). 5. Ciaron Maher is backing in the class of Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Jimmysstar (NZ) (Per Incanto) ahead of his Valley debut in Saturday’s $1 million William Reid Stakes. A new fresh-is-best approach has seen Maher stick to a sprinting path with the son of Per Incanto, having only started below 1200 metres once before his last-start Oakleigh Plate win – when he also won fresh first-up in the spring. Maher said he has no concerns about the powerful finisher navigating the tight circumference at The Valley. “I think he’ll be second half of the field and making his run through them, so you always need a bit of luck,” Maher admitted. “Last start when you see them run the last furlong the quickest of all their sectionals in the race, it’s pretty exciting. “When you see them do what he did – he ended up winning easy in the Oakleigh Plate – he was very strong through the line and gets an extra 100 metres. “The Valley is obviously tighter and a different set-up, but he certainly is still on the up.” Jimmysstar has not only won both 1100-metre races he has contested but also his only 1200-metre event – his maiden win at Wanganui in April 2023. Jimmysstar won’t be on his own at his first start around The Valley as Rey Magnerio, Benedetta, Stretan Angel, Reserve Bank and Arabian Summer will also get their first looks in a field of nine. Maher said the five-year-old who drew barrier 2 could in fact be handier to the speed given the small field. “That certainly works for him,” Maher said of sprinting off a hot speed. “But I’m sure he is not one-dimensional either – he has led a race at Flemington and just got pipped on the line. “So we tell ourselves that, but I am sure a little bit further will suit him and if they do only go slow he will just be a bit closer.” As for what could be next on his radar? “The Quokka was thrown around, there’s the T.J. Smith, I thought the Queensland program would really suit him, but it depends what he does on Saturday,” he said. Maher will also saddle up Thousand Guineas winner Another Prophet in the Sunline Stakes, the progressive Shanwah tackles the Alister Clark Stakes and Just Like Gaby will look for valuable black type in the Don Casboult Classic. 8. What William Reid Stakes Day 2025 Where Moonee Valley Racecourse – Gate 2 Feehan Ave, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039 When Saturday, March 22, 2025 First Race 12:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble Group 1 racing returns to Moonee Valley on Saturday afternoon, with the William Reid Stakes (1200m) headlining a stacked 11-race meeting that also includes the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) and Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m). With rain forecast on Thursday and conditions unlikely to improve much before race day, the Soft 5 rating will likely hold. The rail will be in its true position, with the action set to get underway at 12:15pm AEDT. Race 1: BM78 Handicap (2500m) Dschingis Prestige caught the eye when finishing second, beaten by 1.3 lengths, behind Inevitable Award over 2040m on February 21. The son of Dschingis Secret was only grabbed late on that night, but with the step up to 2500m set to benefit this bloke, he looks hard to go past in the opener. Daniel Stackhouse will stalk the speed from barrier two, and barring any bad luck, Dschingis Prestige should prove too hard to hold out. Selections: 10 DSCHINGIS PRESTIGE 7 BUR DUBAI 6 STEEL RUN 9 MI ROCK ALY Race 2: Valley Pearl (1200m) Pure Passion produced some of the best closing sectionals of the day when finishing third behind Military Tycoon in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes (1000m) at Flemington. The Snitzel filly was seemingly run off her feet early but flew home down the outside rail. The step up to 1200m suits, and with a fair bit of speed engaged, the race sets up perfectly for Linda Meech to have Pure Passion in clear air and flying home down the heart of the track. Selections: 6 PURE PASSION 2 PRESTIGE FOREVER 1 CHERGUI 7 JENNI MOO MOO Race 3: BM84 Handicap (1200m) Top Calibre tasted defeat for the first time in his career when resuming from a spell over 1200m at Flemington on March 1. The four-year-old gelding did not receive much luck throughout the run, and when building through his gears, he was crucially held up for a run. Once clear, he exploded late to be beaten less than a length, which suggested he should have finished closer than he did. Craig Williams will look to land in a forward position from barrier 12, and with even luck, Top Calibre looks hard to beat. Selections: 13 TOP CALIBRE 6 ELOUYOU 5 PIVOT CITY 8 PRANCING SPIRIT Best Bet Race 3 – #13 Top Calibre (12) 4yo Gelding | T: Alex Rae | J: Craig Williams (57.5kg) Race 4: BM84 Handicap (1500m) Verdad brought up a long-overdue second career victory when saluting at Flemington last time out at start 16. Having placed on nine prior outings, the son of Justify was a frustrating commodity for punters, but hopefully the penny has dropped and he can start stringing wins together. He needs to carry 61kg, but the four-year-old gelding is arguably the best horse in the field and should prove hard to run down from an on-pace role. Selections: 1 VERDAD 9 PORTER 7 CAPPER THIRTYNINE 14 STAY FOCUSED Next Best Race 4 – #1 Verdad (4) 4yo Gelding | T: Robbie Griffiths | J: Billy Egan (61kg) Race 5: Yarra Valley Cup (2040m) Dashing Duchess was far from disgraced in the Australian Cup Prelude (2000m) at Flemington on March 8, and form suggests she should be more than good enough to account for this Yarra Valley Cup field. She was beaten 3.7 lengths first-up behind Duke De Sessa when hitting the line strongly over 1600m, before going down to some top-tier weight-for-age horses last time out. This is a significant drop in class, and with a strong affiliation for soft tracks, the race sets up perfectly for Dashing Duchess to find her way back into the winner’s stall. Selections: 2 DASHING DUCHESS 9 FORTUNE 7 ZIRYAB 6 BASILINNA Race 6: Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) The Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes seems to be a race in two, with Emphasize getting the verdict as he looks to turn the tables on Shanwah from when they last met. The son of Embellish went forward in a race that lacked much speed, and it seemingly brought him undone as he faded out to finish fourth, beaten three lengths. With more speed engaged in this, Craig Williams will likely have Emphasize towards the rear of the field, and if he produces anything like he did two runs back when defeating the older horses over 2000m, he will take a power of beating. Selections: 8 EMPHASIZE 2 SHANWAH 3 OPENING ADDRESS 6 STATUARIO Alister Clark Stakes Race 6 – #8 Emphasize (6) 3yo Gelding | T: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young | J: Craig Williams (57kg) Race 7: Group 3 Alexandra Stakes (1600m) Sneaky Sunrise has not done much wrong in two runs this campaign, and with just 56kg on her back in the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes, she is going to take some beating. She ran into the classy Treasurethe Moment last time out and finished 1.8 lengths off Too Darn Lizzie in second, but now this girl has a weight advantage on that runner and comes into this ready to peak third-up. She will need a touch of luck from barrier seven to not get caught wide, but if Luke Currie can find a bum to follow, Sneaky Sunrise will prove hard to hold out. Selections: 4 SNEAKY SUNRISE 3 GALA QUEEN 1 TOO DARN LIZZIE 2 CILACAP Sunline Stakes Race 7 – #4 Sneaky Sunrise (7) 3yo Filly | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Luke Currie (56kg) Race 8: Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) So Glamorous has been massive in defeat through three starts this campaign, but she gets her chance in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes. She was the best of the beaten brigade behind the smart Coeur Volante two back and then was only beaten 1.5 lengths in similar company to this in the Matron Stakes on March 8. With Grinzinger Belle set to make this a genuinely run affair, So Glamorous will be hitting the line powerfully from the rear of the field. Selections: 9 SO GLAMOROUS 2 WROTE TO ARATAKI 5 GRINZINGER BELLE 1 QUINTESSA Sunline Stakes Race 8 – #9 So Glamorous (9) 4yo Mare | T: Grahame Begg | J: Jordan Childs (57kg) Race 9: Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) She’s Bulletproof looked to have had the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) sewn up with 100m to go before Jimmysstar came from nowhere in breathtaking fashion. However, when the pair clash on Saturday, the Charlotte Littlefield-trained mare has the form on the board to turn the tables on her key rival. She was an emphatic winner two runs back over 1200m, and with a strong record at the trip (9: 4-4-0), she clearly will appreciate the step back up to the 1200m. Drawn out in barrier eight, if Craig Williams can land in the one-one upon settling, She’s Bulletproof could have too much momentum on her side late in the 2025 William Reid Stakes. Selections: 7 SHE’S BULLETPROOF 4 SCHWARZ 1 JIMMYSSTAR 5 BENEDETTA William Reid Stakes Race 9 – #7 She’s Bulletproof (8) 4yo Mare | T: Charlotte Littlefield | J: Craig Williams (56.5kg) Race 10: Group 3 Don Casboult Stakes (1200m) Scillato will put her undefeated start to her career on the line in the 2025 Don Casboult Stakes, but she has every right to push that winning streak to four. The three-year-old filly held off Rich Dottie and Clean Energy down the Flemington straight over 1100m when doing plenty wrong, and it looks like she will appreciate getting back around a bend and up to 1200m. Drawn in barrier six, Cory Parish will likely have her settled midfield with cover, and as long as she doesn’t encounter traffic issues in running, Scillato has the finish under the hood to be winning. Selections: 8 SCILLATO 7 CLEAN ENERGY 6 CERTAIN RISE 10 JUST LIKE GABY Don Casboult Stakes Race 10 – #8 Scillato (6) 3yo Filly | T: Lee & Shannon Hope | J: Cory Parish (57kg) Race 11: BM96 Handicap (1200m) If Moby Dick brings his best form to The Valley fresh from a spell, he simply blows his rivals away in the finale — and at a nice price with horse betting sites. The son of Toronado resumes from a 17-week layoff, and with two wins from as many starts when first-up, he clearly benefits from having freshness in his legs. Armed with a blistering turn of foot, Jye McNeil only needs to have the son of Toronado within a few lengths of the leaders on the home turn, with Moby Dick likely to be charging home down the heart of the track. 9. What Alice Springs Races Where Pioneer Park Racecourse – Stuart Highway, Connellan NT 0870 When Saturday, March 22, 2025 First Race 1:24pm ACST Visit Dabble The three-year-olds take centre stage on Day 2 of the Alice Springs Cup Carnival with the $50,000 NT Guineas (1600m) on Saturday afternoon. In one of the best ever meetings in years outside Pioneer Sprint Day and Alice Springs Cup Day, a total of 76 horses have accepted for the eight-event program. After relentless 40C heat throughout summer, light rain fell in the Red Centre on Thursday, and further showers are tipped on Saturday with a top temperature of 35C. It will be a good dirt surface and the rail will once again be in the true position. NT Guineas tip: Grinzinger Lass Grinzinger Lass, who has a 2kg advantage on Saturday, has impressed in the Red Centre. Sharing the lead on debut against fellow three-year-olds over 1200m on February 25, the filly looked home before being pipped on the line. Settling fourth over 1400m on March 8, the daughter of Shalaa made ground on the leaders along the fence at the 500m before bursting clear at the 100m to win by 2.5 lengths. Grinzinger Lass finished strongly to suggest that stepping up to 1600m may not be an issue. NT Guineas Race 8 – #9 Grinzinger Lass (1) 3yo Filly | T: Ray Viney | J: Brendon Newport (55.5kg) Best Bet at Alice Springs: Dakota Lee Eyeing the $100,000 Pioneer Sprint (1200m) on April 5, Dakota Lee makes her long-awaited return after a comfortable last start win over 1100m at BM76 level on June 30. That followed victory over 1000m in open company on Alice Springs Cup Day on April 7 before breaking the track record (1.07.85) after saluting by 3.5 lengths in an open 1200m handicap on June 16. The six-year-old mare by Kuroshio is unbeaten in 10 Pioneer Park starts and certainly has the speed to nullify a wide gate. Best Bet Race 4 – #2 Dakota Lee (10) 6yo Mare | T: Terry Gillett | J: Stan Tsaikos (59kg) Best Value at Alice Springs: Iknowhatyouredoing Iknowhatyouredoing was fifth in a BM76 over 1400m on March 1 after blowing the start and is worthy of another chance after winning two of his previous three starts in Darwin. That was during the Darwin Cup Carnival last July-August; however, the five-year-old gelding thumped his rivals over 1600m and 2050m. The son of Husson, third in the 2023 Darwin Guineas (1600m), boasts a win and a second over 1600m at Morphettville as a three-year-old. A 2kg claim also enhances his hopes on Saturday. 11. What Albury Cup Day Where Albury Racing Club – 16-46 Fallon St, Albury NSW 2640 When Friday, March 21, 2025 First Race 12:50pm AEDT Visit Dabble Albury Racing Club is the destination for country racing on Friday afternoon, with a stacked eight-part program lined up for Albury Gold Cup (2000m) Day. The $200,000 feature has attracted a quality field of 14, with the winner guaranteed a spot in the Big Dance (1600m) later in the year. The rail remains in the true position after racing in the same spot on Thursday, and with more rainfall forecast to hit the course proper, punters can expect a Soft track for race day. Albury Gold Cup Day 2025 is scheduled to get underway at 12:50pm local time. Albury Cup Tip: Medatsu Medatsu was well held in a highly competitive BM88 contest behind Kings Valley at Randwick on March 1 but looks primed to strike third-up into the campaign. The son of Stephanos got within 2.2 lengths of his key rival and gets a 4kg swing in the weights heading into the 2025 Albury Gold Cup. Alysha Collett will be dragging back towards the back-half of the field from stall 11, however, with a genuine tempo engaged in this event, it should allow Medatsu to be surging down the centre of the course at a good price with horse racing bookmakers. Albury Cup Race 7 – #9 Medatsu (11) 4yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: Alysha Collett (56.5kg) Best Bet at Albury: Conchiero Conchiero claimed a dominant 1.4-legnth victory at Warwick Farm on February 19 and appears poised to go on with the job third-up in the campaign. The Pierata gelding beat home four subsequent winners on that occasion, suggesting the from has held up significantly well as the untapped three-year-old tackles the BM74 Albury Guineas. The 61kg on his back should be offset by a positive ride by Rachel King from stall two, and provided he can boot clear similarly to his latest outing, Conchiero must be considered the one to beat. Best Bet Race 8 – #1 Conchiero (2) 3yo Gelding | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Rachel King (61kg) Next Best at Albury: Monte Veebee It’s hard to believe Monte Veebee is still a maiden heading into this preparation after being competitive against three-time Group 1 winning filly Lady Shenandoah in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty (1400m). The newly gelded son of Snitzel should get every chance to make a statement first-up from a 24-week spell, with the three-year-old supreme placed in this maiden contest. He draws gate two to gain the gun run in transit, and although the 1175m may be short of his best trip, Monte Veebee should simply prove too classy for this lot. Next Best Race 2 – #6 Monte Veebee (2) 3yo Gelding | T: Robert & Luke Price | J: Blaike McDougall (58.5kg) Friday quaddie tips for Albury Albury quadrella selections March 21, 2025 2-3-4-5-6 1-2-3-4-6-7 1-2-5-9-10 1-2-5 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article
  12. While distance may be a query for Island Life (NZ) (Vadamos) in Saturday’s Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks (2400m), the talented filly has given Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie every reason to attempt the million-dollar Classic. Racing in the colours of Sir Peter Vela’s Pencarrow Stud, Island Life has done little wrong in her three-year-old season, placing behind Tuxedo in the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) and Real Class in the Gr.2 Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (2000m). The Oaks was always the long-term goal for Island Life, and a professional display on Champions Day to take out the Gr.3 Sunline Vase (2100m) sealed the deal. “It was very exciting and after watching the race quite a few times, she actually did it quite easily,” Ritchie said. “Mick Dee (jockey) was pretty soft on her in the finish to be fair. “She can be quite awkward and can get on the bit in her races, so it’s always been a race-by-race process with her. We entered her earlier on hoping that she would learn to settle, and she settled beautifully in the Sunline. They didn’t go that hard early, so it was really pleasing to see her do that without cover and finish off really well. “Her recovery that day after the race was really quick and she pulled up very well. We’ve been very happy with her since, she’s eating well and is very, very bright, particularly this morning (Thursday) at the track. “It’s just a matter of now getting her down there safely and at 100 percent.” A stakes victory over 2100m bodes well for Saturday’s staying test, which will determine whether the daughter of Vadamos heads to the paddock or considers other options this campaign. “It is a huge question mark over 2400m, she’s going to have to settle and relax well, but you’re only three once and she tries her heart out,” Ritchie said. “We don’t have any plans after this and at this stage it’s the end of her prep, but she has come through the Sunline Vase very well and it would depend what she did on Saturday whether we go on to something else.” The Matamata trainers are no strangers to success on the champagne turf and can’t wait to have a shot at the seven-figure stake, albeit while being wary of the hot-favourite Leica Lucy (NZ) (Derryn). “It’s the biggest prize-money we’ve ever run for and it’s exciting to be racing for a million dollars, that’s for sure,” Ritchie said. “We love going to Wellington, it’s been a very good track to us and we’ve had a lot of success down there so it’s great to be involved. “Leica Lucy has been absolutely phenomenal in all of her starts so far and something would have to go pretty wrong for us to be able to beat her, but it’s a horse race and anything can happen. There are other promising fillies in there as well and they’ve all got to stay.” Leica Lucy currently dominates the Oaks market at $1.50, with Myakkabelle (NZ) (War Decree) ($10) and Island Life ($14) her closest rivals. Following Saturday’s showpiece, the stable will travel up the road to Tauherenikau where they will have three representatives at the Sunday meeting. Three-year-old filly Sonata (NZ) (Charm Spirit) got on the board at Taupo last-start and will look for a repeat performance as a key hope in the Kuripuni Sports Bar and TAB (1400m). “She bounced through that race, she could’ve lined up the following week,” Ritchie said. “She’s a hard case little horse, she just needs to be left alone to find her rhythm, but we’ve been really happy with her so she should hopefully go close again.” Shavasana (NZ) (Super Seth) narrowly missed claiming her maiden at the course in early February, and off a brief freshen-up, will take her place in the Liquorland Masterton/Matahiwi Estate (1000m). “She’s gone really well, we gave her a little break after that with a week in the paddock and she’s come back extremely bright,” Ritchie said. “Hopefully she can get away from the barriers a little bit better, it was her first time in blinkers last time. She’s definitely heading in the right direction so hopefully a win is close.” Completing their trio is first-starter Powerofpersuasion (NZ) (Ten Sovereigns), a filly by Ten Sovereigns with plenty of trials experience under her belt heading into the Dinger Natural Stone (1400m). “She’s going to be a nice staying filly, she’s got a lot to learn and we thought this was a nice soft option for her,” Ritchie said. “She’ll grow up a lot too with the trip away. “It is a watch and see with her, but she is a beautiful type and hopefully she’ll be a nice filly in time.” View the full article

  14. Fancy Like Lass (NZ) (Hellbent) has been no stranger to adversity and a black-type credit would be just reward for the gallant mare. Several setbacks have been overcome by the lightly raced daughter of Hellbent who on Saturday will bid to make the most of her first crack at stakes company. The Sue Thompson-Brown and Mick Brown-trained sprinter returns to Trentham, where she is a two-time winner, to contest the Listed Bill Tito Book Repair Specialist Lightning Handicap (1200m). Fancy Like Lass will be partnered by Kate Hercock, who has forged a formidable partnership with the five-year-old having guided her to all four of her victories from just 11 appearances with a further quartet of runner-up finishes on her CV. “I was surprised it is such a big field, but we’re happy to have drawn seven and that gives us a few options,” Mick Brown said. “We’re happy with her and the ground will be all right as well and that last race has brought her on. With a bit of an easing in the track, she should let down a lot better.” Fancy Like Lass was unplaced last time out on a Good3 surface and had previously finished second in a career that has been punctuated by lengthy injury breaks. “Everyone knows she had a leg problem, she did a tendon and we scanned it and there was a bit of a tear so we did all the rehab,” Brown said. “We got her rescanned and she came back into work, so it was a slow, slow build-up. “Our farrier Johnny Hughes has also kept her sound, he does a brilliant job with her.” Fancy Like Lass is raced by Margaret Harkema and was a $2100 purchase via Gavelhouse. “She’s also had a tie forward operation, she’s a Grade Four in her breathing so she’s got a wind problem as well, but she’s pretty tough and genuine,” Brown said. “She’s a lovely mare and Margaret has been brilliant so it would be so nice to get a bit of black type.” Safely through this weekend, she may go to the Listed City Of Napier Sprint (1200m) at Otaki before a break. Bred by Nearco Stud, Fancy Like Lass is the first foal of the Choisir mare Mandalong Belle who is a half-sister to the multiple Singapore stakes winner Spanish Bay. It is a speedy family with Mandalong Belle’s dam a half-sister to the Gr.1 Surround Stakes (1400m) winner Khaptivaan who produced the Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) winner Khaptingly. 15. Ben and Ryan Foote have taken a single-minded approach to Saturday’s Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) with their genuine filly Myakkabelle (NZ) (War Decree). The father and son team have been solely focussed on their daughter of War Decree ahead of a return trip to Trentham to again do battle with dominant market leader Leica Lucy (NZ) (Derryn) in the Al Basti Equiworld Dubai-sponsored Classic at Trentham. “One thing that Ben has taught me is that you can only worry about your own job,” Ryan Foote said. “I don’t know how many $1.50 favourites have won an Oaks, but we are only concerned about our filly and it’s a horse race and anything can happen.” Myakkabelle has progressed well through to age group black type racing this season and stepped up over ground for the first time when fourth on New Year’s Day in the Gr.2 Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (2000m). She then finished third in the Gr.2 David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic (2000m) and runner-up at Trentham last time out in the Gr.2 Lowland Stakes (2100m), both times behind Robbie Patterson’s Leica Lucy. The stable is also confident the step up in trip will pose no problems for Myakkabelle, who will again be ridden by Vinnie Colgan. “It’s only an extra 300m and we don’t have any worries whatsoever about her running it out,” Foote said. Myakkabelle has also proved her ability to perform on top of the ground and cope with any softening of the going. “She’s all good to go and she’s in good form. She went really well at her last start and any rain around won’t worry her,” Foote said. “In her first start (at Te Rapa) on a Heavy 10 track, she flew home for second so any rain would only help her chances. There are a lot of positives about her, that’s for sure.” While the immediate focus is on Saturday, it may not necessarily be the filly’s grand final. “We will definitely consider other options if she runs up to expectations,” Foote said. “We will see how she comes through the races and how she does in the days after first though.” Myakkabelle was a $55,000 purchase out of breeder Inglewood Stud’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale. She is a daughter of the unraced Irish-bred Lawman mare Myakka Park and a strong international black type pedigree that also features the Australasian Group Two winers Bella Waters (Tauranga Stakes, 1600m) and Immediacy (Autumn Classic, 2000m). 16. Procul Boy (NZ) (Proisir) made up for a late start to his racing career with an eye-catching victory in the Property Brokers – Wanganui (1200m) at Waverley on Wednesday. A five-year-old by Proisir, Procul Boy has been patiently handled by Gail Temperton, who bred and owns the gelding under her Taikorea Thoroughbreds banner. He made his first appearance to the trials back in December of 2023, and over a year later, he returned to Foxton to finish a narrow second over 1000m, showing promising signs ahead of his debut. That came eight days later at the midweek meeting, where a number of scratchings reduced the field to an evenly-matched half-dozen runners. Procul Boy started second-favourite behind Oscar (NZ) (Mulaazem), but his chances looked to be dwindled at the start, missing the kick and settling last. Oscar was a keen pacemaker and lead the field into the straight, but getting to the outside of the heavy track, Procul Boy came powering over the top in the closing stages to win by three-quarters of a length in the hands of Mereana Hudson. Temperton admitted to a few nervous moments early but was delighted with the result. “I thought it was all over and go home now, but you never know with them, do you,” she said. “I was very surprised, I knew he could do it but not with the way he started.” Procul Boy is out of a Castledale mare Cullister, who Temperton also prepared to win two races, including at her first start. He was from an early crop of Rich Hill Stud’s resident stallion Proisir, who has gone on to become one of the country’s leading sires. “His mother is from an old Cambridge Stud family and she was a very slow maturer, but she won her first start just like that,” she said. “Sadly, she took off in the barrier and was injured, so nothing much came of her after that. “I have a lot of hope for this guy, he may make up for it. “We had a share in Proisir, so we bred quite a few Proisir’s. He’s the first boy, because I’ve usually sold the boys and kept the girls. At nearly 77 years old, the fillies drive me crazy, but he’s a darling.” View the full article
  17. Island Life is among the favourites in Saturday’s Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m). Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) While distance may be a query for Island Life in Saturday’s Group 1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m), the talented filly has given Steven Ramsay and Julia Ritchie every reason to attempt the million-dollar Classic. Racing in the colours of Sir Peter Vela’s Pencarrow Stud, Island Life has done little wrong in her three-year-old season, placing behind Tuxedo in the Group 3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) and Real Class in the Group 2 Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (2000m). The daughter of Written Tycoon won the Listed Crockett Stakes at the same track and trip in 2023 and she returned to the scene of the crime to record her first win in Group company. The race favourite Isthmus ($3.80) ran along at her own pace at the front of the field, with Brazen Style ($23.00) and Diamond Decorator ($19.00) outside of her, while Gumdrops settled behind the leading trio on the fence. Stockdale chose to follow the leader through along the rail, but as Isthmus started to tire, the eventual winner took over and careered away to claim a 1.25-length victory. 2023: Parisal not for catching Godolphin filly Parisal delivered a commanding performance to secure victory in the 2023 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley. Trained by James Cummings and ridden by Craig Newitt, the three-year-old showcased her natural speed, controlling the race from the front before kicking clear in the straight and holding out the fast-finishing Wee Nessy and Lady Laguna. 2022: Hellfast gets nose down in time It was a thrilling finish to the 2022 Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes at Moonee Valley, but it was James Cummings’ Hellfest who proved too strong late. The daughter of Fastnet Rock was sent out as a $21 chance in the eight-horse field, which featured the likes of Scorched Earth and the unbeaten Snapped, but the two market fancies were no match for Hellfest and South Australian visitor, Champagne Dreams. Hellfest went into the race on the back of back-to-back wins at provincial level in New South Wales, but that proved to be the right form as she swamped her rivals late to get up in the final stride under Jye McNeil. 21. What Ascot races Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104 When Saturday, March 22, 2025 First Race 12:29pm AWST Visit Dabble The Listed J.C. Roberts Stakes, Natasha Stakes and Grandstand Cup will headline the massive nine-race card at Ascot on Saturday afternoon. The track is expected to remain in the Good 4 rating that was posted at the time of acceptances, with perfect weather forecast in the lead-up to the meeting. The rail will be in the +3m position for the entire circuit, with racing scheduled to kick off at 12:29pm AWST. J.C. Roberts Stakes tip: Superfluous Simon Miller and William Pike will combine with Superfluous for the second straight start, as they seek to go two better in the J.C. Roberts Stakes. The daughter of Needs Further jumped sharply in grade from her maiden win to Listed company in the Lex Piper Stakes, where she finished third over 1600m. With little to no speed expected in this contest, Pike can push forward and settle behind the leaders on Superfluous, peel off their backs on the home corner, and let him finish off strongly. J.C. Roberts Stakes Race 8 – #9 Superfluous (9) 3yo Gelding | T: Simon Miller | J: William Pike (54kg) Natasha Stakes tip: Machine Gun Gracie Machine Gun Gracie has finished in the top two in each of her three career starts, and she was very good in the Listed Ascot 1000 Guineas. The Justine Erkelens-trained filly looked as though she was beaten at the 300m mark, but she kicked back late to finish half a length behind Glasgow Lass, indicating that a rise in trip will suit her. Shaun O’Donnell will get an uncontested lead on Machine Gun Gracie, and if she gives a strong kick turning for home, she will give her rivals something to chase. Natasha Stakes Race 7 – #6 Machine Gun Gracie (4) 3yo Filly | T: Justine Erkelens | J: Shaun O’Donnell (54kg) Grandstand Cup tip: Fluro Neuro Fluro Neuro brought up a hat-trick of wins with a dominant performance as a heavily-backed favourite with horse racing bookmakers, where he won by a length over 1400m at Bunbury. The Grant & Alana Williams-prepared gelding has been racing on speed of late, which has seen a turn around in his form. Clint Johnston-Porter will retain the ride in the Grandstand Cup, and if he can replicate his steer from last start, Fluro Neuro will win again. Grandstand Cup Race 6 – #4 Fluro Neuro (3) 5yo Gelding | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: Clint Johnston-Porter (59kg) Best Bet at Ascot: Jaz Session Jaz Session bounced back from a close runner-up finish first-up with a narrow but convincing victory second-up, when the Justine Erkelens-trained mare held off her rivals over 1000m at this track. This daughter of Sessions will be better for her first two runs and should be going into this race at peak fitness. If O’Donnell can settle in the one-one position from barrier six, Jaz Session’s turn of foot will give her every chance to go back-to-back. Best Bet Race 1 – #2 Jaz Session (6) 4yo Mare | T: Justine Erkelens | J: Shaun O’Donnell (56.5kg) Next Best at Ascot: Success Play Neville and Chris Parnham sprung somewhat of a surprise with Success Play by leading all the way over 1690m at Bunbury on March 8. The son of Playing God was never challenged throughout the run, and after Parnham lifted the tempo, his mount responded and kicked away from his rivals in the concluding stages. With no other speed influence engaged in this race, the +500 with PlayUp is a great bet for Success Play to record another frontrunning victory. What Eagle Farm Races Where Eagle Farm Racecourse – 230 Lancaster Rd, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, March 22, 2025 First Race 12:13pm AEST Visit Dabble Racing returns to Eagle Farm this Saturday afternoon, as the Brisbane Racing Club is set to host a competitive nine-race card. Although there is rain forecast in the lead-up to the meeting, the track is expected to remain in the Good 4 rating that was posted at acceptances. The rail will be in the +6.5m position for the entire circuit, with the first race scheduled to jump at 12:13pm AEST. Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Diablo Bolt Diablo Bolt has been racing in career-best form this preparation, recording three wins and a placing from his four starts for Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald. The son of Hellbent proved too good for his rivals over 2200m at Doomben, as he settled behind the speed and ran away from the field in the final 200m. With a similar race shape expected against the same level of opposition, Diablo Bolt only has to hold his form to win again. Best Bet Race 2 – #3 Diablo Bolt (2) 4yo Gelding | T: Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald | J: Jag Guthmann-Chester (58.5kg) Next Best at Eagle Farm: Blue Spinel Tony Gollan and Angela Jones will combine with Blue Spinel for the fourth time in five starts, as the mare seeks to record a long-awaited win. In both of her last two starts, the daughter of Hellbent has rattled home from the back of the field to finish in third place. In a smaller field and with a strong speed expected to be set by the leading division, Blue Spinel can settle worse than midfield and storm home down the middle of the track. Next Best Race 5 – #4 Blue Spinel (7) 5yo Mare | T: Tony Gollan | J: Angela Jones (56.5kg) Best Value at Eagle Farm: Majorelle Majorelle returns from a 21-week spell with the benefit of two barrier trials under his belt, with his last hitout over 900m being the better of the two. The Matthew Dunn-trained gelding settled off the tearaway leaders for most of the trial before powering through the line under no riding. The +1200 on offer with horse racing bookmakers is a great price for Majorelle, who does his best work early in his preparation.
