John “Jack”” Murphy, who campaigned multiple Grade I winner Formal Gold, passed away Apr. 30 in North Weymouth, Massachusetts. He was 88. An iron worker and member of the Local #7, Murphy was the founder and owner of Dorel Steel. Formal Gold won the 1997 GI Woodward S. and GI Donn H. for Murphy, who also campaigned 1996 GI Acorn S. winner Star de Lady Ann. As a breeder, he was represented by 2008 GI Frizette S. winner Sky Diva, as well as graded stakes winner Noonmark. Homebreds Adore the Gold and Trickle of Gold–both by Formal Gold–won graded races in Murphy’s colors. “He was a self-made man who developed a passion for horses that endured throughout his life,” recalled Murphy’s racing manager Chris Swann, who described Murphy as a “mentor, father-figure, partner and dear friend.” Swann continued, “He always put the horse first. He truly was the “old-school” type they don’t have many of anymore, meaning he was a sportsman and a gambler who loved all aspects of the game. He participated with 5K claimers and Grade I winners. He was a worldly guy who traveled to Dubai and all over to watch his horses compete and still enjoyed travel until his health declined. He was an excellent businessman who delegated authority and that helped him succeed.” Murphy is survived by his wife Theresa Murphy, his son John Murphy, Jr. and daughter Lisa-Marie Murphy-McGurty, as well as four grandchildren and one great-grandson. CATHOLIC BOY (c, 3, More Than Ready–Song of Bernadette, by Bernardini) came out on top of a very strangely run renewal of the GIII Pennine Ridge S. at Belmont Park Saturday, as he came back on previously unbeaten Analyze It (Point of Entry) to get the job done in 1:45.78. Channel Cat (English Channel) was a distant third. Last year’s GIII With Anticipation S. and GII Remsen S. winner hadn’t been seen since finishing fourth in the GI Florida Derby Mar. 31, and was off at 4-1 after getting a stiff warm-up from first-time pilot Javier Castellano. Sent right to the front to seize command from the usually speedy Analyze It, Catholic Boy found a comfortable rhythm up front until the odds-on chalk came to tackle him in upper stretch. The pair bumped as Analyze It seized command and came over on Catholic Boy, but Catholic Boy wasn’t done yet and he re-broke to get up late from the leg-weary leader. Lifetime Record: 7-4-1-0. Trainer Chad Brown has had his hands on Gronkowski (Lonhro {Aus}) for just a few weeks, but pronounced himself pleased with the Phoenix Thoroughbreds-owned colt after he worked five furlongs in 1:01.87 (see below) over the Belmont main track ahead of next Saturday’s GI Belmont S. “It went well, galloped out a good three-quarters and I was real happy with it,” Brown said of Gronkowski. “This horse hasn’t put a foot wrong since he’s arrived. He’s a real classy horse and came to me in outstanding condition.” A winner in four of six European starts for trainer Jeremy Noseda, including a last-out score in the Listed Burradon S. over the all-weather track at Newcastle, Gronkowski won the European Road to the Kentucky Derby and a berth in the gate on the first Saturday in May, only to have those plans derailed with a minor setback. Gronkowski was later sent to the U.S. and in his short time with him, Brown believes he has a colt equipped to stay the Belmont trip. “Based on his two workouts, he’s made to go a mile and a half on the dirt to me,” said Brown. “In a perfect world, I wish I had him longer and had a better handle on the horse, but it is what it is and I’m fortunate to be in this position to go there with a chance to win. Brown added, “I could have squeezed three breezes in, but I just didn’t feel the horse was completely acclimated over here yet, so I went with caution and did two works. I wanted to make sure he was ready to work, and he was. Based on what I see, he looks pretty fit. There’s some unknowns–he did miss some time–and coming off a layoff going a mile-and-a-half, that’s about as tough of a task as you can ask a horse to do. But he’s a high-quality horse, so maybe he’s good enough to do it.” WATCH: Gronkowski works towards the Belmont Blended Citizen (Proud Citizen), recent winner of the GIII Peter Pan S., took to the Belmont main track around 12:45 p.m. prior to the races Saturday afternoon and went five furlongs in 1:00.64 for his expected appearance in the Belmont (video). Trained by Doug O’Neill, the sophomore went in :12.65 and :24.25 before finishing off his final two furlongs in a smart :23.68 for a time of :47.93 for the half-mile before finishing his work past the wire. “He covers a lot of ground. He’s a Cadillac,” said jockey Mike Luzzi, who was in the irons for the work. “Obviously we know he likes the track. I wish the best of luck to them next week.” Leandro Mora, for better than 17 years an assistant to O’Neill, jetted into New York Friday evening and was pleased with what he saw Saturday morning. “What I like is how easily he did it,” Mora said. “It was nice, I’m very pleased. He wasn’t even making noise going by. I like how he went past the wire. That’s when you know you have a legit horse. I like what I saw.” The neck winner of the GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks over the Turfway Poly Mar. 17, Blended Citizen was a troubled fifth behind champion Good Magic (Curlin) in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. ahead of his 47-10 victory last time in the Peter Pan. Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Tenfold (Curlin), a closing third to ‘TDN Rising Star’ Justify (Scat Daddy) in the GI Preakness S. May 19, turned in his final major work ahead of his rematch with that rival in next Saturday’s GI Belmont S. with a five-furlong move at Churchill Downs Saturday morning that was timed in 1:01.60 (video). Under the watchful eye of trainer Steve Asmussen, who sent out Tenfold’s sire to a narrow runner-up effort in the 2007 Belmont, the dark went in even early fractions of :12.60 and :25.20 before picking it up a bit to cover three furlongs in :37.20 and the half-mile in :49.20. He galloped out six panels in 1:15 flat and seven-eighths of a mile in 1:28.80, according to Churchill clocker John Nichols. “We were three-quarters of a length from where we needed to be in the Preakness,” Asmussen said. “He’s lightly raced and his best races are ahead of him. I think he deserves the opportunity in the Belmont S. I have nothing but respect for the field, not just Justify. It’s a very respectable field with a lot of ability. I think Tenfold is very talented and getting better at the right time.” WATCH: The progressive Tenfold works five furlongs Saturday at Churchill View the full article

Preparing for a defense of her title in the G1 King’s Stand S. at Royal Ascot June 19, Stonestreet Stable and Peter Leidel’s Lady Aurelia (Scat Daddy) breezed five furlongs over a Keeneland turf course listed as yielding in 1:03.40 in the company of the G3 Jersey S.-bound Hemp Hemp Hurray (Artie Schiller). Breaking off a few lengths ahead of her MSW & GSP stable companion, Lady Aurelia clicked off splits of :13.60, :26.20, :39 and :51.60 before covering her final furlong in :11.80 (see below). “She did great today, she really did,” Ward said afterward. “She sat there, and just kind of cruised right off and did everything right with her ears pricking back and forth. Looked like she was very, very happy. Made me very happy.” Lady Aurelia has one tightener under her belt this term, a runner-up effort to repeat winner Triple Chelsea (Hat Trick {Jpn}) in the Apr. 14 Giant’s Causeway S. at Keeneland. Ward also sent out GIII Shakertown S. hero Bound for Nowhere (The Factor) to drill five panels in the company of Master Merion (Quality Road). The former, who is set to contest the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. June 23, was timed in 1:01 while Master Merion was clocked in 1:01.20 (video). Other horses headed to Ascot include Undrafted (Purim), the 2016 Diamond Jubilee victor who went a half-mile in :50.80 for the June 23 Wokingham H.; the juvenile fillies Stillwater Cove (Quality Road) and Our Passion (Elusive Quality), who galloped four furlongs in :49.80 (video); and the trio of 2-year-old fillies Athens Queen (Majestic Warrior), Shang Shang Shang (Shanghai Bobby) and Chelsea Cloisters (First Samurai) also worked as a team (video). Athens Queen made up three lengths to stop the timer in :50 flat, while Shang Shang Shang [June 21 G2 Norfolk S.] and Chelsea Cloisters [G2 Queen Mary S. June 20] were given :50.60. Ward added that his team would now leave for England a week later than previously planned on June 11 and that the horses would have their final preps at Keeneland late next week. Rumours of the impending retirement-possibly as soon as after his ride on Hazapour (Ire) (Shamardal) in the G1 Investec Derby-for Frankie Dettori circulated around Epsom early on Saturday, but the rider quashed those rumours after partnering Wilamina (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) to victory in the G3 Princess Elizabeth S., saying. “I’m not retiring. There is a rumour going around saying that I’m going to retire after the Derby. I’m definitely not retiring and you definitely have another five years of putting up with me.” View the full article

As far as the French Classics are concerned, the place to start is with Antonio Caro, Gerard Augustin-Normand and Jean-Claude Rouget, such has been their rampant dominance of the domestic scene in recent times. Sunday’s G1 Qipco Prix du Jockey Club hinges mainly on whether their latest “galactico” Olmedo (Fr) (Declaration of War) stays this 10 1/2-furlong trip, having done what the stable’s Brametot (Ire) (Rajsaman {Fr}) did 12 months ago when taking the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp May 13. Racing Manager Sylvain Vidal is in the dark in that respect. “We don’t know if he’ll stay the distance, but we were happy with him in the Guineas and he finished strongly,” he said. “It’s so difficult to win the Guineas and the Derby. We did it last year, but to do it again might be asking too much, so we’ll see.” Any concerns should be lessened by the presence in his pedigree of multiple middle-distance performers including Super Celebre (Fr) (Peintre Celebre), who was runner-up in this when it used to be staged over a mile and a half. Olmedo is also connected to the G1 Irish Derby hero Zagreb (Theatrical {Ire}) and the G1 Prix de Diane heroine Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {GB}) and approaches the task in top order. “So far, everything has gone very well so we’ll see,” Vidal added. “All we know is the horse has been working well at home.” The field was shrunk further on Saturday when it was announced that Al Shaqab Racing’s Al Adaid (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) would sidestep the race, which is due to be staged on soft ground after 20 millimetres of rain hit Chantilly on Friday night. That news is not likely to be welcomed by Aidan O’Brien, whose main challenger Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) was so at home on a quicker surface when winning the Listed Dee S. at Chester May 10. “He’s in good form. He won nicely in Chester and we’re looking forward to seeing him run over a mile and a quarter again,” the Ballydoyle trainer said. After that stable’s leading man Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) came up short at Epsom on Saturday, the opportunity to provide the Japanese sensation with a first European Derby falls to The Niarchos Family’s Study of Man (Ire). His relation East of the Moon (Private Account) captured the G1 Prix de Diane over this trip and he showed that Miesque-like class when winning the G2 Prix Greffulhe also at this distance at Saint-Cloud May 8. Study of Man’s trainer Pascal Bary, who also has Jean-Louis Bouchard’s Naturally High (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), who took the 10-furlong Listed Prix de Suresnes at ParisLongchamp Apr. 29, has his sights on the modern-day record tally of six winners set by Alain de Royer Dupre. He is on five, but has yet to win this race after it was remodelled from a mile and a half in 2005. “Study of Man and Naturally High have had a perfect preparation–with each endowed with the quality to shine,” he said. “They are indifferent to the state of the ground as both have won on a heavy track, although they have a preference for good ground. Study of Man is a super colt and one with a very good turn of foot. He hasn’t had any hard races, which is both an advantage and a disadvantage. Naturally High is a very strong colt and has only run one bad race, on his debut. That’s not his fault but mine as his introduction to racing came far too early. He has impressed in both his races this year and, on his last start, he came off the pace. I think he has had a good chance.” Supporting Acts… On the same card, ‘TDN Rising Star’ Efaadah (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) bids to build on her return success in the May 6 Listed Prix des Lilas over a mile at ParisLongchamp in the G2 Prix de Sandringham, where she encounters the G1 1000 Guineas fifth Altyn Orda (Ire) (Kyllachy {GB}). The latter’s trainer Roger Varian said, “Altyn Orda ran a super race in the 1000 Guineas and she has trained nicely since. The ground had just tightened up enough for her at Newmarket and she certainly won’t mind the easier underfoot conditions here. She looks to set the form standard based on what the runners have achieved at three, so I hope she can go very close.” Godolphin’s Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) enjoys a class-drop after finishing third in the G1 Prix Ganay at ParisLongchamp Apr. 29 in the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly, a race his trainer Andre Fabre has won a record nine times. He is joined by fellow “blue” Rare Rhythm (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the Charlie Appleby-trained winner of the 14-furlong G3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy at Meydan Mar. 1, and another Fabre trainee in the May 6 G3 Prix d’Hedouville scorer Waldgeist (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). Godolphin’s Lisa-Jane Graffard commented, “Cloth of Stars confirmed to us that he is a true mile-and-a-half horse in the Prix Ganay, when he galloped out really strongly.” Waldgeist’s half-sister Waldlied (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) takes in the G3 Prix de Royaumont, a race her trainer Fabre has collected 11 times, and she looked a strong stayer at this 12-furlong trip when getting off the mark at Saint-Cloud at the start of last month. In a renewal of the G1 Investec Derby to savour, it was Godolphin’s royal blue which led the way home with Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) belying odds of 16-1 to become the first to prevail in the blue riband in these silks. Always travelling smoothly alongside the 4-5 favourite Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in mid-division, the G1 2000 Guineas third went forward as soon as William Buick posed the question passing three out and he proved he stayed the mile and a half thoroughly to win by 1 1/2 lengths from Dee Ex Bee (GB) (Farhh {GB}), with Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) a half length away in third. Saxon Warrior met some trouble in running, but looked unhappy on the track when in the clear and could only finish 2 1/2 lengths further behind in fourth. “It is not easy to win it,” Sheikh Mohammed simply stated as he prepared to welcome back the first Derby winner in the Godolphin silks. “It’s huge, massive,” Buick said. “This is my seventh derby ride and there were a couple of times where I was thinking is my time ever going to come, so to do it for Sheikh Mohammed and his family in the royal blue makes me very happy. He stayed the trip and travelled beautifully. He’s a very good horse and the team believed in him even though it didn’t happen for him in the Guineas.” MASAR (IRE), 126, c, 3, by New Approach (Ire) 1st Dam: Khawlah (Ire) (Hwt. 3yo-UAE at 7-9.5f, MGSW-UAE & GSP-Eng, $1,366,175), by Cape Cross (Ire) 2nd Dam: Villarrica, by Selkirk 3rd Dam: Melikah (Ire), by Lammtarra O/B-Godolphin (IRE); T-Charlie Appleby; J-William Buick. £34,026. Putting behind her a first disappointing effort when last of 14 in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, the Wertheimers’ Polydream (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) dished out a ready beating to the Godolphin pair Inns of Court (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Jimmy Two Times (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in Saturday’s G3 Prix du Palais-Royal at ParisLongchamp. Sent off at 9-2, the G3 Prix du Calvados winner and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up raced on the rail in mid-pack early and when committed by Maxime Guyon passing the two-furlong pole quickly had the measure of Inns of Court to her inside. At the line, the bay had 1 1/4 lengths to spare over that rival, who was in turn a neck ahead of Jimmy Two Times in third. Introduced over six furlongs at Deauville in July, Polydream made light work of that affair before beating Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the G3 Prix du Calvados over this seven-furlong trip back there in August. Beaten only by Wild Illusion (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Prix Marcel Boussac at Chantilly on Arc day, she found the Pouliches coming too soon and despite beating no rivals was only beaten around six lengths. Polydream is a daughter of the Listed Prix d’Angerville and GIII Monrovia H. runner-up Polygreen, who is also responsible for the MSW Evaporation (Fr) (Red Ransom) who placed in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein and G2 Prix de Sandringham. Two wins each on Wednesday night kept Moreira’s lead at two, but the Brazilian looks to have the better hand on Sunday with eight favourites in... View the full article

Two-thirds of the runners for the G1 Prix du Jockey Club have passed through a sales ring at some time in their lives, at prices ranging from €27,000 to €320,000. Olmedo (Fr) (Declaration Of War) Bred by Jean-Pierre Dubois under his Dream With Me Stable banner, Olmedo could become a first Classic winner not just for his young sire but also for Arqana’s v.2 Sale, having been bought there for €100,000 by Jean-Claude Rouget. 9th-Gulfstream, $48,100, Msw, 6-1, 2yo, 5fT, :57.77, fm. ENTIRELY (f, 2, Point of Entry–Reef Bay, by Danzig) showed an upbeat tab at Bridlewood Farm for this first go, and took the most early tote support before settling as the co-5-2 chalk. Slow from the gate, the Strawbridge homebred started picking off rivals down the backside and advanced ominously leaving the bend while spinning very wide. Green but clearly well on her way to victory when she figured out her lead changes in upper stretch, the bay kicked away with promising strides to win wrapped up by 3 3/4 lengths in a performance reminiscent of her MGSW stablemate Catholic Boy (More Than Ready)’s own debut down here last July. Entirely has a yearling full-brother foaled in Saudi Arabia–that colt was being carried by Reef Bay when she sold for $10,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November sale. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $24,000.
