Six years ago, the team of Hronis Racing, trainer John Sadler, and jockey Joel Rosario captured the GI Breeders' Cup Classic with Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky). Saturday the team was reunited in the Breeders' Cup's winner's circle as they capped the championship day card with Full Serrano (Arg) (h, 5, Full Mast–Serra Do Mar {Arg}, by Jump Start) in the $1-million GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. At 13-1, Full Serrano tracked Japanese shipper and pacesetter T O Saint Denis (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) behind :22.30 and :45.47 fractions before taking command with a flourish in the stretch to pull away as he pleased. GII Carter Handicap winner and MGISP Post Time (Frosted) closed from the back to nab second, while last-out H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes winner Domestic Product (Practical Joke) got up for third. Full Serrano covered the eight furlongs in 1.35.48. A listed stakes winner last year in Argentina and graded placed there this January when trained by Diego Pena, Full Serrano made his first start for his new connections at Del Mar in August, winning a one-mile optional allowance. Routed to the 1 1/4-mile GI Pacific Classic, he finished second while registering a 99 Beyer Speed Figure. He missed the California Crown after spiking a fever, which Sadler cited as the reason he pointed Full Serrano to the Dirt Mile rather than to the Classic. DEL MAR, USA — From the 2,000 Guineas to the Breeders' Cup Classic, he is the horse who has kept us captivated, wondering and engaged, through to season's end. And that, really, is why we are all fans of horse racing. That longing to know what can't be known for sure until those gates spring open, the skirmishes are had, and the winning post looms. In the end, for City Of Troy (Justify), unbeaten and burgeoning with promise at two, redeemed in the Derby and then some at Sandown and York after that Guineas flop, the quest for Breeders' Cup Classic glory was a step too far. We won't die wondering though. He tested the dirt and was found wanting on an attritional surface so unlike the green, green grass of home. Jockey Ryan Moore, his navy silks dusty from the dirt spray, hailed City Of Troy as “brave” to keep on for eighth place, finishing some 13 lengths behind the Chad Brown-trained victor Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) in the Coolmore second colours. A win, then, just not the preferred outcome. “I think he ran a very brave race,” Moore said. “He's come in to Del Mar in the Classic and in the previous two Classics there were only eight or nine runners. Today there were 14 and they went very fast. He was getting a lot of kickback, which he hadn't experienced, and I think he was very brave to keep on.” Typically, Aidan O'Brien blamed himself. “I just need to step it up a little bit and have him a little bit better prepared,” he said, but agreed that missing the break was a crucial factor in the three-year-old never working his way into the heat of the battle. “That was it then really. He just never got into it, they went very hard. It was just a bad day to miss the break.” After a clean sweep of the three turf races on Friday by O'Brien and Ger Lyons, Ralph Beckett and Charlie Appleby added their own names to the winners' sheet for England with two horses who already boasted good records at the meeting. The mighty Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) really should be afforded the utmost respect for a CV that runs to seven top-level wins in Dubai, Germany, Hong Kong and now two victories in the Breeders' Cup Turf, at Keeneland and Del Mar. “He owes us nothing,” said Appleby of the six-year-old Rebel's Romance, who, with William Buick in the saddle, took a prominent position early in the mile-and-a-half test and wasn't for catching, despite the best efforts of the Japanese runner-up Rousham Park (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}). “With a horse like him, he takes the pressure off you,” he added. “Any big festival meetings, if you're not getting the rub of the green for the first few races, of course you feel the pinch a little bit. When you roll a horse out like him, you know he's going to be giving his best out there. You can only allow him to do that. He never lets us down.” That is a sentiment with which Ralph Beckett is starting to view his stable jockey Rossa Ryan. On Saturday the trainer stated that the 24-year-old Ryan is getting better month by month. Starlust and Rossa Ryan win the Turf Sprint | Horsephotos Last month he won the Arc for Beckett aboard Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}) and now, on his third start at the meeting, he has added the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint to his tally, courtesy of the progressive three-year-old Starlust (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}). In a race not without drama, including the withdrawal at the start of the mulish Believing (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who had been reluctant to go to post and then unshipped Ryan Moore in the stalls, Starlust survived a stewards' enquiry to give Beckett his first Breeders' Cup victory since Muhannak (Ire) took the now-defunct Marathon in 2008 with the late Pat Smullen aboard. “Ralph left it up to me, filled me up with a lot of confidence going out,” said Ryan. “I actually spoke to Ryan Moore before the race about just a little bit of guidance and everything. I didn't have the pace to jump early, so I slotted in behind them. I wasn't fierce coming out of the back when I came off the bridle because he always comes good two out.” He added, “It was just one of those days. Luck was on our side.” Owners Jim and Fitri Hay were not in America to enjoy this breakthrough victory for the Branton Court Stud-bred Starlust but the colt has given them plenty of high days already with six wins under his belt and a third-place finish in last year's Juvenile Turf Sprint. “He was unlucky in the [G1 Prix de l'] Abbaye in the sense that Rossa was nearly put through the rail. It was a good run, very good run,” said Beckett. “The other point about why we came here, an important point, is that it was around a bend. He was very good around the bend last year in the Juvenile Turf. We really felt that if he was able to hold onto their coat tails, that would play for him.” The European domination of the turf contests could not be sustained throughout the remainder of Saturday's card. There were further placings for Appleby's Godolphin squad, with Cinderella's Dream (Ire) (Shamardal) and Beautiful Love (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) taking second and fourth in the Filly & Mare Turf and Notable Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) running on for third in the Mile. But Canada's Horse of the Year Moira (Ghostzapper) won the former at the third time of asking and More Than Looks (More Than Ready) provided trainer Cherie DeVaux with her first Breeders' Cup win in the Mile. For British and Irish spectators some of the fizz disappeared from the day with City Of Troy's defeat. But he is at least going home in one piece, vanquished but unharmed, to take up stud duties at Coolmore alongside the previous year's Derby winner Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {GB}) who has one last dance in the Japan Cup later this month. The toughest reality of this sport was laid bare on the track at Del Mar in the aftermath of the Breeders' Cup Turf. As Rebel's Romance was led back in to the winner's circle to the delight of the Godolphin team, at stage left Brian Meehan was being hastened into a track vehicle to reach the stricken Jayarebe (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) on the back stretch. The three-year-old, who had progressed with such promise this season, winning the G2 Prix Dollar on Arc weekend, passed the post in seventh but moments later collapsed as he was being eased down by Sean Levey and died from an apparent heart attack. Triumph and disaster, those twin impostors, are never far from each other in this world, so while we congratulate all those for whom the Breeders' Cup dream became reality, we commiserate with owner Iraj Parvizi and the team at Manton who loved Jayarebe as they come to terms with their worst nightmare. Trainer Cherie DeVaux earned her first win at the Breeders' Cup meeting when MORE THAN LOOKS (c, 4, More Than Ready–Ladies' Privilege, by Harlan's Holiday) caught fire in the final furlong and outsprinted top local chance Johannes (Nyquist) and Godolphin's favored Notable Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to take out the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar. Off at odds just shy of 7-1, More Than Looks was outfooted as expected as Goliad (War Front) led from Japan's Ten Happy Rose (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) through a first quarter mie in :22.73. Ridden quietly from the tail by Jose Ortiz, More Than Looks still had it all to do entering the final three furlongs, and Ortiz wisely tracked Notable Speech into the final two furlongs. Switched out for clear sailing, More Than Looks clearly tried to lug in on multiple occasions, but he was straightened up with time ticking away and managed to finish off the task at hand, becoming an eighth Breeders' Cup winner for the much-missed More Than Ready. Johannes won the place photo over Notable Speech, while Ten Happy Rose was a courageous fourth. Sales history: $135,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP. The formidable training partnership of Brian and Shane Anderton will be out in force at their local meeting at Wingatui on Tuesday, for the hugely successful meeting run annually on Melbourne Cup Day. With many first-time or once-a-year racegoers in attendance, following runners from the Anderton team often brings plenty of success as they perform with distinction on their home patch. “It’s going to be a big day for the stable if the weather improves, as most of our runners are looking for improved track conditions,” Shane Anderton said. “The track is rated a Heavy10 at present, but the forecast is for plenty of sun over the next couple of days so we’re hoping it can get back to a Slow8 at least. “It’s an advantage being able to race at home as the horses don’t have any travel worries and ten minutes after they have raced, they are back in their box or paddock so there is a lot less stress on them. “We’ve got a dozen nominated and we’d like to see them all go around as there are a few kicking off new campaigns and are ready to go.” While the team has entries in eight of the 10 races carded, punters may have to wait for the stable’s best chance to step out in the last of the day, with promising four-year-old Our Approval (NZ) (Ghibellines) lining up for just his fourth start following back-to-back wins at Oamaru and Wingatui. “He (Our Approval) is a horse who has come a long way in a very short time and has looked good doing it,” Anderton said. “He is a real improver and has to step up another grade on Tuesday, but if he keeps progressing the way he has, he can be pretty competitive. “He gets through the wet okay but if the track can dry out then that would suit him nicely.” Anderton is also keen to see class performers Capo Dell Impero (NZ) (Ghibellines) and Burgie (NZ) (Ghibellines) put in good showings in the main race on the day, the Grand Casino (1400m), as both could feature during Riccarton’s New Zealand Cup Week Carnival later in the month. “Burgie holds a nomination for the Gr.3 TAB Mile (1600m) on the middle day at Riccarton, but she would have to look good on Tuesday for us to take her to Christchurch,” he said. “She definitely has the ability, although she hasn’t shown that in the spring much before, as she has been troubled with seasonal issues and the like. “We have her in foal to our White Robe Lodge resident stallion Ancient Spirit which has really settled her down. She is also a mare that finds new ways to get into trouble during a race so we’re hoping she can get out of that habit for her last campaign. “Capo Dell Impero is in a position where he has to carry the grandstand at the top of the handicaps every time he steps out which doesn’t help him. “When he is right, he is a very handy horse and if he goes okay then we might find a race for him at Cup Week as well.” Anderton also nominated maiden Lined Satin (NZ) (Ghibellines) as a good chance to kick the day off for the team in the first on the card. “Lined Satin went a ripper in her only two-year-old start when finishing second and after a spell she came back well to run fourth first up at home here last month,” he said. “She steps up in distance and if she can strike a reasonable track, I’d expect her to go well to get our day started.” View the full article

The MyRacehorse contingent, chatting their horse's name, flooded the winner's circle at Del Mar as they celebrated a signature score by Straight No Chaser (Speightster–Margarita Friday, by Johannesburg) in the GI Cygames Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar on Saturday. The 5-year-old got rolling behind pacesetter Federal Judge (Army Mule). By the far turn, the Dan Blacker trainee started to make his run at the leaders, which included Bentornato (Valiant Minister). Fully loaded down the lane, Straight No Chaser found his best stride and won by half a length over Bentornato. Mullikin (Violence) ran on to get third. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That was the case for Canadian Horse of the Year MOIRA (Ghostzapper–Devine Aida, by Unbridled's Song) as she took the lead in her third attempt in the GI Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, before driving home a half-length winner for her first Grade I tally at Del Mar Saturday. In so doing, the 5-1 shot held off the late rush of Godolphin's Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal), who nosed out Didia (Arg) (Orpen) for second. The final time for the $2-million 1 3/8-mile race was 2:14.95. Owned by X-Men Racing, Madaket Stables, LLC and SF Racing, LLC, the 5-year-old mare is trained by Kevin Attard, who also saddled Saturday's pacesetter Full Count Felicia (War Front). Bred by Adena Springs in Ontario, the 2022 Woodbine Oaks and Queen's Plate heroine sold for $150,000 as a yearling to X-Men Racing. Last November, she was one of the highlights of the Fasig-Tipton Night Of Stars when selling to DM Racing Ventures for $3 million before continuing her racing career. European shipper Jayarebe (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) died following the running of Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Turf. The 3-year-old finished the race, but collapsed during the gallop out. According to a statement put out by the Breeders' Cup, Jayarebe suffered what appears to have been a cardiac event. He was immediately attended to by a team of veterinary experts led by Dr. Brent Cassady, but unfortunately passed away. His jockey, Sean Levey, was uninjured. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to Jayarebe's connections and the many fans whose lives he touched,” read the statement. Trained by Brian Mehan, the colt was 4-for-7 lifetime with his biggest win coming in the Oct. 5 G2 Prix Dollar at Longchamp.
