  1. St Leger Stakes winner, Athabascan. Photo: bradleyphotos.com.au The John O’Shea & Tom Charlton-trained Athabascan ($6.50) has returned to form, claiming the Group 3 St Leger Stakes (2600m) to kick off the Everest Day program at Randwick on Saturday afternoon. The son of Almanzor was coming through the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) a fortnight ago, with the five-year-old gelding relishing the step up in trip and Soft 5 conditions on offer. Tommy Berry was able to place Athabascan in the perfect stalking position throughout the journey, cuddled up behind a decent tempo courtesy of the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Military Mission ($12.00), sent to the top by Adam Hyeronimus in the early stages. New Zealand raider Trust In You ($8.50) got the rails run turning for home, while the Ciaron Maher-trained Wyclif ($10.00) cut the corner in the final 400m to get the last crack at Athabascan who was sent to the front in the early part of the straight. Race favourites Alegron ($4.00) and Etna Rosso ($4.80) were nowhere to be seen in the finish, with the latter getting chopped out turning for home. Waltham ($6.50) was attempting to sustain a long run from the rear of the field, but it was all in vain as Athabascan and Wyclif sat down to fight out the finish, with the former narrowly getting the verdict to claim the 2024 St Leger Stakes. 2024 St Leger Stakes replay – Athabascan Co-trainer John O’Shea was on course to breakdown the win before declaring the first Tuesday of November would be where punters see Athabascan next. “It was a great run,” said O’Shea. “We’ve been so happy with him, we haven’t been disappointed with him, but he just hasn’t had circumstances to suit. Today he got them and he got the job done. “That’s been on our agenda all season (Melbourne Cup), we just needed a positive run today to get him back in the game. I think he drops five or six kilos into the Cup and he’ll run a very good race because he’s a good two-miler. “We’ve been so happy with this horse all season, he just hasn’t had circumstances to suit. He got a good ride today and he showed what he’s capable of. “He drops significantly in weight going into the Cup, that run will top him off. We look forward to the first Tuesday in November.” Tommy Berry was happy with the horses’ work leading into this and delighted with the performance. “I actually gave him his final piece of work leading him to the Metrop,” said Berry. “I said to John, ‘you’ ve got a good chance in this’, but obviously they rode him forward on that day and that is probably not the way to ride him, so we just had him in a position today. “I was mindful to keep Kerrin (Etna Rosso) where he was early, so I didn’t get pushed to the fence, just because I knew I wanted to get on my bike early. “He was incredible in the Sydney Cup and we rode him that way, switched the stick through probably four times just to keep his mind on the job, but off to the Melbourne Cup now.” Athabascan is currently a $34.00 chance with horse racing bookmakers for the 2024 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 5. 10. Who’s been excelling at the trials around the country? Auckland Trotting Club Workouts @ Pukekohe Thursday 10 October Race 5- Dawson (3g Sweet Lou-Speights Girl) Tr- B Purdon & SD Phelan Always shown a heap of potential and resumed in this heat going straight to the front for driver Crystal Hackett. Only a quiet trial up against two other runners but looked strong throughout, running home in a tick over 58 seconds for the last half, and 27.8 for the final quarter. Went on to win his Alexandra Park debut last night. Race 6- Loveable Rogue (5g Sir Lincoln- Running with Fire) Tr-D Erickson Qualified back in June for owner/trainer Daniel Erickson, the son of Sir Lincoln and useful mare Running With Fire, was having his third workout back from a spell. Trailed the eventual winner, Debrief (Steve & Amanda Telfer) throughout, and not asked for the ultimate effort by driver Maurice McKendry in the run home, finishing third. Has always hinted the ability is there, and finished sixth on debut at Alexandra Park last night. Race 8- Nothing But You (2f Captaintreacherous-Bubbled Up) Tr- SJ Reid This heat was run left handed and with Steven Reid soon to relocate to his new Canterbury base, obviously getting the filly used to that way around. Showed gate speed to lead, and was never troubled to hold the other three contestants off. Paced the 2050m in a 2.06 mile rate with the final 800m in 58.2 and the last quarter in 28.4. Sure to be prominent when she makes her debut in the coming weeks. Winton Trials- Friday 11 October Race 3- Hogie (5g He’s Watching- Serene Abbey) Tr- M J Williams Lightly raced 5-year-old (just 3 starts to date, for two seconds). Started his career with Tony Stratford, then had one start for Jeremy Douglas, and now trained by lessee, Michael Williams. Led out for driver Brent Barclay over the 2400m, and won as he liked by 5 lengths, pacing the journey in 3.04.5, the last half in 57.3 and the final quarter in 27.9. Hasn’t raced since June, but is ready for a bold resumption this Sunday (20 October) at Invercargill in Race 3. Chertsey Trotting Club Trials @ Ashburton Monday 14 October Race 3- Sweet Tartan (3f Sweet Lou-Expressive Victor) Tr- T R Barron The lightly raced filly (3 starts) took on some race winners in this Rating 50 trial. Beginning well from the inside draw, she trailed early before ending up three back, when eventual winner Hooroo took over with a lap to run for Jonny Cox. Managed to clear the tiring trail horse just before turning for home, and followed the winner up the straight, finishing untested in third position. Last raced in March, so looks forward for her resumption. The 2400m was run in 3.04.8 (last 800m in 58.3 and final quarter in 27.6). Hooroo was good in winning and the second placed Bettor Fear Me (unraced), hinted she is a filly to follow out of the trial. Race 4- Bettor Fortune (2g Bettor’s Delight-Fortune Lover) Tr- DJ Keast We have highlighted this 2-year-old previously, and he impressed again from the standing 2400m event. First time from behind the tapes, but stepped like a toff and led comfortably, quickening over the last 800m in 57.3 and the 400m in 27.3 to win easily in the hands of John Morrison. Definitely a horse to follow when he next lines up on race day. North Canterbury Trials @ Rangiora- Thursday 17 October Race 1- Countless Questions (3g Imperial Count-Flash Move) Tr- RL Houghton Nice upstanding son of Imperial Count who qualified back in May, but yet to make his debut on race day for Ross Houghton. Began safely of the four runners and remained last until improving just before the home turn for driver Bronson Munro. Stretched out in fine fashion to win well, running the last 800m in 59.6 and the final quarter in 29.4. Looks a young trotter with talent. Race 2- Captain Can Can (2F Captain Crunch- Can Can Bromac) Tr- JD Harrington Two year old filly with Jack Harrington who had only been to one workout prior to todays qualifying heat. Up against a couple of handy horses in Joyride and Blazing Knuckles who have already placed on race day, she sat last of the five runners and was allowed to run home under her own steam to qualify well. They ran their last half off the front in 57.8 and the final quarter in 29.4, so she put in some good work late. Race 3- Hey Bartender (6g Sweet Lou-Lady Antebellum) Tr- CT & Mrs CM Dalgety Having first start from the Dalgety barn after transferring from James Stormont. Began well in the 2000m heat and settled three back on the inside for driver Andrew Drake, before grabbing the one-one behind Tact Teena inside the 700m mark. Only asked for an effort with 150 to run and unwound in good style to finish a close up fourth, behind all the way winner Don’t Tell Jenny. They paced the trip in 2.32.8, with the last half in 57.3 and the final quarter in 28.4. He has always shown ability but went off the boil towards the end of his last campaign, but one to watch when he lines up from his new stable. Race 8- High Step (3f Father Patrick-High Gait) Tr-RJ Butt High class filly who last raced in the Group 2 NZ Sires Stakes Fillies Classique won by Empire City in September. Recent change of stable from Mark and Nathan Purdon, the daughter of Father Patrick began well to trail the eventual winner Edward Longshanks throughout. In a tight finish she was nosed into second with Four Wise Women a neck away in third. Has been the winner of four from 12 career starts to date, so will be an interesting addition to Bob Butt’s stable. Father Time which was selected by Hope Racing for their slot in The Ascent on Show Day following his brilliant last start win, galloped on his own accord with about 400m to run, which would be of some concern for connections. 13. With 102 workers Friday at Santa Anita, a number of prospective Breeders' Cup horses were bound to be on display. Among them was 'TDN Rising Star' and GI Del Mar Futurity winner Prince of Monaco (Speightstown), runner-up in two Grade I events at Saratoga this summer, who worked five furlongs in :59 (2/28). The Bob Baffert trainee is pointing toward the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. It was announced this week that he will stand at Claiborne Farm at the conclusion of his racing career. Another Baffert-conditioned Breeders' Cup contender is Tenma (Nyquist), who worked five panels from the gate in 1:01. The GI Del Mar Debutante winner is targeting the GI Juvenile Fillies. Trainer Tim Yakteen also sent out dual Grade I-placer McKinzie Street (McKinzie) Friday. The 2-year-old colt, who is a contender for the GI Juvenile, went four furlongs in :48.80 seconds. Jeff Mullins worked Artislas (Catalina Cruiser) in advance of an “undecided” start in the GI Juvenile Turf. The GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf winner covered four furlongs in :48.80 seconds. Breeders' Cup pre-entries are due Monday and will be revealed to the public Wednesday. 14. Announcing duties at the inaugural season of Golden State Racing (GSR) in Pleasanton, California will be split between veterans Jason Beem and Bill Downes, with Beem calling the first four weeks and Downes calling the balance of the meet. The Golden State Racing season runs Oct. 19 through Dec. 15. “Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I've watched and enjoyed racing from California since I was a kid,” said Beem, who has been calling since 2006 and is the current announcer for both Tampa Bay Downs and Colonial Downs. “I think it's so exciting what Golden State Racing is setting out to do and I'm very happy to be able to call these first few weeks of races as they start this new journey in Northern California.” In addition to announcing, Downes will also do the morning line for the meet. “I am pleased to be taking the reins from such an enthusiastic caller like Jason,” said Downes, who called the final season at Golden Gate Fields. “Returning to Northern California to be part of this season will be exciting, I look forward to engaging in the special relationship NorCal fans have with racing and watching it grow.” GSR General Manager Larry Swartzlander added, “We are pleased to welcome Jason and Bill to the Golden State Racing team. Jason brings a special flare to kick off of the first GSR meet, and Bill, as the former Golden Gate Fields announcer, brings the support of the Bay Area fan base.” For more GSR information, visit goldenstateracing.com. 16. Spicy, indeed! Shisospicy (f, 2, Mitole–Mischief Galore, by Into Mischef) left them all in her wake on debut in Florida, and earned the seal of approval from the TDN as well, becoming her sire's fourth 'TDN Rising Star' Friday afternoon. Sent away at 5-2 odds here, she set the pace from a ground-saving trip on the rail, putting up :22.82, and :45.97 early splits. Widening under minimal urging from Paco Lopez, she had built up a six-length margin entering the stretch, and from there it was a question of how much she felt like winning by. Cruising in, the final tally was 16 1/4 lengths back to Vuela Paloma (Valiant Minister) who was a clear second-best of the rest. The final time was 1:10.65 over a track labeled fast. The second to the races for Mischief Galore, she is also the second winner by the sire and out of the dam, as her elder sister Sapphire Nights has also had her picture taken. The mare has since produced a pair of Yaupon offspring–a yearling colt and a 2024 filly. She visited Early Voting for 2025. This is the female line of MGSW Maren's Meadow, who herself hailed from a stakes-winning family in Canada. Bred by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, the grey realized $100,000 as a short yearling at KEEJAN in 2023, selling to Fish Stables, before changing hands for $200,000 six months later at FTKJUL, going the way of Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds. As expected, several months later at OBSAPR this year, she went through the ring as a 2-year-old in-training, but missed her reserve when the bidding stopped at $300,000 after blitzing a furlong under tack in :9 3/5. She remained in training for Morplay Racing stable, which is comprised of Miami Latin music mogul Rich Mendez and his son Josh, as well as Randy Hartley and Dean DeRenzo. “I really liked this filly from the first day. In Ocala, he had so many horses and I said, 'I really like the gray filly. If you don't sell her, send her to me, because to me she is the best horse at the sale,'” trainer Jose D'Angelo said. “I've always had confidence in [Shisospicy].” D'Angelo added, “I gave her some time. She's professional on the track, but she's very nervous. We gave her enough time, and she responded very well today. She was a perfect horse for Keeneland or Churchill Downs, but she's so nervous, I decided to keep her here where she was training.” SHISOSPICY hija de MITOLE y nieta de INTO MISCHIEF, impresiona debutando en 6F como dosañera en Gulfstream Park. 20. Philip Serpe, a licensed trainer since 1984 who has maintained a nearly violation-free record while campaigning graded stakes winners up and down the East Coast, is fighting “banned substance” sanctions involving the alleged detection of clenbuterol in an Aug. 10 Saratoga Race Course winner he trained by suing the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in federal court. Serpe's Oct. 17 lawsuit in United States District Court (Southern District of Florida) cites the purported unconstitutionality of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA), “because, first, HISA's delegation of federal regulatory power to the Authority violates the private nondelegation doctrine, and, second, HISA and the HISA Rules violate the Seventh Amendment's right to a jury trial.” Those allegations of unconstitutionality share common legal underpinnings with no fewer than eight other lawsuits in the federal court system in which HISA is under attack. Three of those cases have already been decided at the federal appeals court level (two in favor of HISA's constitutionality and one against). And in each of those three lawsuits, the losing party at the appeals court level has recently initiated legal action in the U.S. Supreme Court that could lead to the nation's highest court deciding once and for all whether the 2020 law that governs the sport in America is constitutional or not. Serpe's lawsuit stated that the 65-year-old trainer “challenges the Authority's enforcement and seeks to dissolve and vacate the provisional suspension imposed against him, which is causing Serpe to suffer irreparable injury.” Serpe's complaint is asking the court to “declare HISA and the HISA Rules to be unconstitutional, preliminarily and permanently enjoin Defendants from enforcing HISA and the HISA Rules against Serpe, and dissolve and vacate the Authority's provisional suspension against Serpe.” Beyond the provisional suspension, Serpe is facing a two-year period of ineligibility and a monetary fine up to $25,000 if HISA's clenbuterol allegations go against him. The lawsuit continued: “In addition to lost once-in-a-lifetime racing opportunities, training income, and racing winnings, Serpe has lost customers, goodwill, and business. Further, the provisional suspension is causing Serpe reputational harm… “Over his more-than-40-year career, with more than 8,000 starts, none of Serpe's trained horses have tested positive for a prohibited medication,” the lawsuit stated. That claim is backed up by Serpe's rulings history posted online by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI). That portal, which lists most (but not all) actions reported by state racing commissions, shows only two entries for Serpe: One was a 2013 Class 4 (lowest level) phenylbutazone overage detected at Gulfstream Park, to which Serpe agreed and consented to a $250 fine. The other was a 2018 workout violation at Saratoga related to breezing a horse too soon after it had received shock or pulse wave therapy, an infraction to which Serpe waived his right to appeal and had $500 stayed from a $1,000 fine. The HISA Authority's director of communications, Mandy Minger, told TDN via email on Friday that the Authority did not wish to comment on Serpe's lawsuit. The HISA Authority's web portal currently lists Serpe as being “suspended.” His case status is listed as “pending.” Clenbuterol is listed as a “banned” substance under HISA rules. It is a drug that over the past 30 years in racing has evolved from being an unregulated bronchodilator used to treat equine airway disease to a sometimes-abused, performance-enhancing substance that eventually became heavily sanctioned in North America because it was known to mimic the muscle-building properties of anabolic steroids. Serpe's lawsuit outlined the timeline of what happened over the past two months, starting when Fast Kimmie (Oscar Performance) won a four-horse, off-the-turf $30,000 claimer at the Spa for owner WellSpring Stables. “As a result of winning the race, A Samples and B Samples of Fast Kimmie's blood and urine were collected,” the lawsuit stated. “Testing and analysis of the A Samples of blood and urine was performed by the Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at the University of California, Davis. “The Authority began flexing its enforcement muscle against Serpe on Sept. 4, when the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU) notified Serpe that Fast Kimmie's A Sample of urine had resulted in an adverse analytical finding for the detection of Clenbuterol. “This was the first time that Serpe learned of his alleged violation of the Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) program, even though the subject race occurred nearly a month earlier. By written response to HIWU, Serpe denied he administered, or caused the administration of, Clenbuterol to Fast Kimmie. “Adamant in his innocence, Serpe requested that B Sample testing and analysis be performed, exercising his right under HISA Rule 3246. “Serpe also requested that HIWU conduct blood and hair testing, together with DNA analysis, which would identify and confirm whether the A Sample tested by UC Davis was actually collected from Fast Kimmie. “HIWU responded that Clenbuterol was not detected in Fast Kimmie's A Sample of blood and denied Serpe's request for hair testing and DNA analysis. Hair testing and DNA analysis are critical to Serpe's defense against the alleged ADMC Program violation. “B Sample testing and analysis was performed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture Analytical Toxicology Laboratory. On Oct. 10, HIWU issued Serpe a charge letter stating that testing and analysis of the B Sample of urine confirmed the detection of Clenbuterol. “The charge letter further stated, '[A]s required by ADMC Program Rule 3247(a)(1) of the Protocol, HIWU has imposed a Provisional Suspension on you as the Responsible Person effective as of today's date.' “The charge letter advised Serpe that he had one week–until Oct. 17–to (1) admit the ADMC Program violation and accept, dispute, or seek to mitigate HIWU's proposed consequences or (2) deny the ADMC Program violation and dispute HIWU's proposed consequences” at a hearing, the lawsuit stated. The lawsuit explained that Serpe's interpretation of the HIWU charge letter was that if he declined to proceed with the arbitration, then he would be “deemed to have waived [his] right to a hearing, admitted the Anti-Doping Rule Violation(s) charged, and accepted the Consequences specified by HIWU.'” Instead, according to the lawsuit, on Oct. 14, Serpe responded to HIWU's charge letter by demanding, in writing, that HIWU rescind the provisional suspension and advise whether it will bring its enforcement action in federal district court.” The post Trainer Serpe Sues HISA over Clenbuterol Suspension appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 21. After a hearing before the Board of Stewards, jockey Luan Machado was suspended for three days and fined $2,500 for his ride aboard Ultimate Strike (Mineshaft) in Wednesday's eighth race at Keeneland. Keeneland uses two finish lines, one for mile-and-sixteenth races and the other for mile-and-an-eighth races. Ultimate Strike was five lengths in front as he hit the first finish line and was clearly on his way to victory. But Machado apparently believed the race was over at that point and began to pull up his horse prior to the actual finish line for the race. Machado's gaffe allowed longshot Gotta Have Dreams (Creative Cause) to just get past him at the wire for the win. He will be suspended three racing days, Oct. 27, Oct. 30 and Oct. 31. Machado is the regular rider of marathon specialist Next (Not This Time), who will likely make his next start in the Breeders' Cup. With 62 wins, Machado was the leading rider at the recently concluded Turfway Park meet, 25 wins ahead of runner-up Gerardo Corrales. 25. The National Thoroughbred League (NTL), a new series of races meant to bring the team concept to the sport and to attract new fans, will put on its second 2025 event Saturday at Parx. It is called Oktober-Fast and is hosted by NBA Hall of Famer and Philadelphia icon Julius (Dr. J) Erving. When the NTL was in the planning stages last year the focus was on purchasing horses and then having them divvied up between the teams. There are currently 10 teams in the league and they would own the horses. It turned out the plan was impractical, so President of Horse Operations Tom Ludt came up with a new concept. Now, a racetrack draws a card as it normally would and then the team owners draft the horses, much in the same way football fans draft their fantasy football teams. The actual owners of the horses keep all the purse money, but must agree to let their horses run in the silks of whichever team drafted them. The Parx races that will be part of the NTL are the sixth through the tenth. “We don't own any of the horses,” Ludt said. “It's a Iot more like a fantasy sports game. One condition of entry is that the horse has to run in silks of team that drafts them. The racetrack does its draw and the gives us a one-hour window for a fantasy draft based off a random draw. Unfortunately, one race only has seven horses so three teams were excluded.” A point system is based on where the horses finish for each of the teams. In the inaugural NTL event this year, which was held at Kentucky Downs, the Miami Seahorses came out on top with 570 points. There is no prize structure in place this year to reward the winning teams, but that may change in the future. NTL events are supposed to be about more than just horse racing and that will be the case this weekend at Parx. Erving, who is a co-owner of the Philadelphia Stallions, will be the main attraction, He, along with other sports stars, will be available throughout the afternoon to have a meet-and-greet with fans. There will be no charge to enter the area where the sports stars will be congregating. NTL event | Sue Finley This year's series will wrap up in December at Turf Paradise. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is a co-owner of the Phoenix Mustangs. Ludt is already planning for 2025 and believes the NTL events scheduled for Pimlico in the week between the Derby and the Preakness will be the league's biggest hit. “Lamar Jackson has bought into the Baltimore team, the Maryland Colts,” “Ludt said. “The Governor has been very supportive of us. We have negotiated with Pimlico and we got May 10, the Saturday between the Derby and the 150th Preakness. To have Lamar Jackson and the Governor behind us, I think that's going to make that event by far our biggest event.” While still a work in progress, the NTL's goal remains the same, to introduce new fans to the sport of horse racing. “Our idea is to put butts in the seats, to bring new people out to the racetrack. We're doing it through different avenues. The meet-and-greets should get sports fans not interested in racing to the track to see what the sport has to offer. As he has in the past, Ludt made it clear that he was hoping the industry as a whole would be more supportive of the NTL concept. “It's a challenge,” he said. “This industry is very segregated. I have finally found a model that works for the tracks and works for us so that we can economically survive. People don't want to hear this but I think we're going to be doing this industry a huge favor. On Saturday, we will bring a lot of people to this track who don't normally follow horse racing. That's our mission.” The post Next Stop For The National Thoroughbred League, The City Of Brotherly Love appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
