Feroce (NZ) (Super Seth) will always hold a special place in the heart of Dom Sutton as the galloper who has launched his training career. Feroce has already supplied the Ballarat-based horseman with his first winner and his maiden city victory, while in Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas he will also become his first Group 1 runner. Sutton is certainly aware of the magnitude of the achievement of having a Caulfield Guineas runner with Feroce in the first year of his career. “If someone said to me when I first took my licence out that I would have a Group 1 runner in the first seven months of training, you’d laugh at them,” Sutton said. “I’m very fortunate enough to have a horse to warrant taking to a Group 1 race like that.” To put the effort in context, the other stables with runners in the race include some of the biggest names in Australian training. Chris Waller, James Cummings, Gai Waterhouse, Anthony and Sam Freedman, Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, the Hayes brothers Ben, Will and JD, Clinton McDonald, Tony and Calvin McEvoy and Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young are his rival trainers. Sutton will be saddling up his 56th runner, while in comparison, Waterhouse has trained 145 G1 winners and Waller 125. Feroce is the horse who has been Sutton’s trailblazer and he said he saw enough in the galloper’s last-start fourth placing in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude to progress to the Guineas, despite his forgettable effort when first-up at his previous start in the McNeil Stakes as he was held up for the entire straight. “I thought he was very good in the Guineas Prelude. He didn’t have much of a run first-up, so he was pretty much first-up in the Prelude,” Sutton said. “I thought he was good; he was just a little bit out-sprinted at the top of the straight against some horses suited to 1400m. I think stepping up to 1600m will really suit him.”Sutton is happy with Feroce having drawn barrier two as he is hoping the Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s pair Wanaruah and Mayfair will push forward. “From barrier two Billy Egan can jump and then assess. Hopefully we get cover and a nice soft run,” he said. Sutton said obviously Broadsiding is the horse to beat. “He’s still on the way up and on ratings figures he’s a few steps ahead of the rest,” he said ahead of the race, in which Sportsbet has Feroce assessed as a $61 chance. “I think it’s an even bunch apart from Broadsiding. He’ll be suited to 1600 metres, as I think he will get out to 2000 metres at some point,” Sutton said. View the full article

There was plenty of emotion on display at Waverley on Wednesday when Lovely Rita (NZ) (Keano) broke a two-decade winning drought for owner-breeder-trainer Alison Ross. The eight-year-old daughter of Keano was fair away from her wide gate, but jockey Madan Singh elected to press forward with his charge and captured the lead heading into the back straight. Lovely Rita set a strong tempo up front, opening up several lengths on the rest of the field and was able to maintain that advantage to the line, winning by 1-3/4 lengths. Ross was duly delighted with the victory from the outsider of the field, with Lovely Rita paying $71 on the fixed odds. “I was very excited,” she said. “I had no money on though, she was paying plenty.” Lovely Rita was having just her ninth career start and Ross wasn’t overly enthused with the Heavy8 track conditions heading into the meeting. “We weren’t happy about the Heavy track reading, we were hoping for Soft or better, but we took the gamble and it paid off,” she said. “She has run quite a few good races, things just haven’t quite worked out in her favour.” Ross said Lovely Rita has thrived on her farm work of late. “I have had to put my boots on again at the farm and I have been riding her around the farm four days a week and the boy (track work rider) has been riding her at the track two days a week,” she said. “Things worked out.” Ross has always been fond of horses and has spent time working with them in both New Zealand and abroad, eventually taking out her trainer’s license in 1988. “I have had show ponies and I have done a lot of riding. My mother was a horse person,” she said. “I worked over in England for a couple of years with point to pointers and show horses. “I came back and worked for Leon Lupton for a couple of years. We had Region going, who won a lot of jumping races. I shifted down to the South Island and had a couple of horses running down there. One was Rainbow Warrior and she had a bit of success down there. “My first winner Tommy Hazlett rode at the Omakau races, and she paid about $77.” In 2005, Ross stepped away from training to focus on other areas of her life but found the pull of the sport too strong and decided to get a couple of mares in foal a few years ago, with Lovely Rita being one of the resulting foals. “I had a break away (from racing) and then decided I would really like to get some horses going again,” she said. “Mr Bliss, with the Keano stallion, was friends with my partner and he very kindly gave us service fees for the horses.” Ross had plenty of patience with Lovely Rita, who didn’t have her first start until last year, and Ross is pleased her perseverance has paid off. “You live and hope, and it is something to get out of bed for in the morning,” she said. Ross has just two horses in work, and while she didn’t get any of the $71 odds on Lovely Rita on Wednesday, she was pleased the owners of her other horse did. “The other one is a Rageese three-year-old filly that is owned by people in Waverley that wanted to have a share in a horse,” she said. “They were the ones that had $2 each way on her yesterday that were jumping for joy.” Ross is hoping her next win isn’t too far away, and may even back her mare up at her home track next week. “I am looking for a 2000m race somewhere,” she said. “We would have liked to go to Waverley next week but seeming that is 2200m we will have to have a think about it.” View the full article

Photo: Sonna Studios Southside Racing have unveiled a lucrative slot racing series this year, with each of the two A$1 million races in the series also becoming qualifying races for New Zealand’s inaugural Sport Nation Champion Sprint series. The Southside Racing slot series includes the A$1 million The Meteorite (1200m) and A$1 million Supernova (1400m), with The Meteorite set to take place on Cranbourne Cup Day on November 23, while The Supernova will be run on Pakenham Cup Day on December 21. Both events are open to three-year-olds and older, and will be conducted under set weights and penalties conditions. On Thursday, Southside Racing revealed the 14 slot holders for the series: Busuttin Racing Cape Schanck Racing (Tony Ottobre) Carl Holt Cavallo Park Ciaron Maher Racing Ladbrokes Racing Club Lindsay Park Racing Lofty Group Moody Racing Moonee Valley Racing Club OTI Racing Sheamus Mills Bloodstock Southside Racing Sportsbet / Melbourne Racing Club “The Southside Slot Series is unlike anything we’ve seen before in Australian racing, and the calibre of slot holders reflects the industry’s enthusiasm for this ground-breaking format,” Southside Racing chief executive Neil Bainbridge said. “We can’t wait to see the best contenders compete on the track and make history.” In addition to the prizemoney on offer, the slot holder who accrues the most points across both races will also be awarded a special bonus. To add further incentive to the series, each race has become a qualifying race for the Sport Nation Champion Sprint Series in New Zealand, which has become a part of Entain Australia and New Zealand and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s Champion Bonus series. As part of the new Summer Carnival, the new Champion Sprint Series will join the revamped Champion Middle Distance Series and will be run for a total of $1 million in bonuses, with the final race in each series to be run on Champions Day, also home to the $3.5 million NZB Kiwi (1500m), on March 8 at Ellerslie. Points will be allocated to the first four placegetters of each race in the respective series, with a bonus pool of $500,000 being shared amongst the owners of the three highest point-scoring horses at the conclusion of each series ($300,000 for first, $150,000 for second, and $50,000 for third). To be eligible to win or place in a series, a horse must compete in at least one Group One race in New Zealand in the relevant Series. If two or more horses finish with the same number of points in a series, the relevant bonus amount will be shared amongst the owners of those horses. What Port Macquarie Cup Day Where Port Macquarie Race Club – 283 Oxley Highway Port Macquarie, NSW 2444 When Friday, October 11, 2024 First Race 12:35pm AEDT Visit Dabble Country racing returns to Port Macquarie on Friday afternoon, with a bumper nine-part program set for decision. The Port Macquarie Cup (2000m) headlines the action, with a field of 11 looking to book their ticket to the Big Dance (1600m) on the first Tuesday of November. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and although the track is rated a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, the drying conditions should mean an upgrade into the Good range for race-day. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 12:35pm local time. Port Macquarie Cup Tip: Raf Attack The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Raf Attack looks superbly placed in the 2024 Port Macquarie Cup. The son of Satano Aladdin is rock-hard fit heading into start five of the campaign and showed tactical versatility when leading at Rosehill on September 28, and despite being defeated by 1.5 lengths by Firestorm, he wasn’t beaten far by Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) placegetter, Unusual Legacy. He gets a 5kg weight swing on his key rivals at the top of the page, and with gate three to aid Raf Attack and Rachel King on their journey, this guy will take plenty of chasing in the $200,000 feature. Port Macquarie Cup Race 8 – #3 Raf Attack (3) 4yo Gelding | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Rachel King (57kg) Bet with Neds Best Bet at Port Macquarie: Phenom Phenom returns after a 198-day spell and looks ready for first-up assault on the back of two strong barrier trials. The daughter of Zoustar hasn’t been asked to do much in her work, cruising through the wire on both occasions, suggesting the three-year-old filly still had plenty left in the tank. Rachel King will have work to do slotting in for cover from barrier 14, but provided she lands in an economical position in transit, Phenom should have this lot covered. Best Bet Race 4 – #13 Phenom (14) 3yo Filly | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Rachel King (55kg) Bet with Picklebet Next Best at Port Macquarie: Get Some Fun Karen & Madeline Owen combine with Get Some Fun as she searches for back-to-back wins. The filly by Wandjina couldn’t have been more impressive in her second-up victory, dispatching her rivals by 4.2 lengths at this course on September 29. She gets every chance to lead every step of the way once again, and although she could be stopping at the end of 1200m, Get Some Fun should last at a good price with horse racing bookmakers. Bellatrix Star will contest the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday. Photo: Bruno Cannatelli New Zealand syndicator Fortuna’s silks have been to the fore during Melbourne Cup Week through the deeds of Melody Belle, and they are hoping they can feature prominently once more through their rising star Bellatrix Star. Melody Belle won the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) on Derby Day five years ago for then Te Akau trainer Jamie Richards, and if Bellatrix Star performs up to expectations in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday, she too could be heading towards the feature meeting. The daughter of Star Witness has been in scintillating form for trainer Mark Walker in Australia this preparation, winning the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) at Flemington last month before repeating the result in the Group 3 Scarborough Stakes (1200m) at The Valley. “She has grown a leg,” Walker said. “It is terrific for New Zealand racing as a whole because we need our horses to perform. There are quite a few Group Ones on warnings, so any New Zealand-trained horses that can go to Australia and perform is good for the whole industry. It has been satisfying.” Bellatrix Star has drawn barrier four in Saturday’s nine-horse field and will be ridden by Craig Williams. “It is not easy taking on the older horses over there. She is in brilliant form, so we will see how we go,” Walker said. The trans-Tasman trainer is eyeing his mare’s options post Saturday but is leaning towards a tilt at an elite-level target at Flemington next month. “Perhaps the Coolmore Stakes, the Group One three-year-old race on Derby Day,” he said. What Ascot races Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104 When Saturday, October 12, 2024 First Race 12:39pm AWST Visit Dabble Western Australian horse racing returns to Ascot Racecourse for the summer months, kicking off with a competitive nine-race program this Saturday afternoon. With warm weather forecast for the remainder of the week, the track is expected to stay in the Good range for the whole meeting. The rail will be in the +2m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race scheduled to jump at 12:39pm AWST. Best Bet at Ascot: Rope Them In Rope Them In returned in fine style at Belmont on September 28, where the Steve Wolfe-trained gelding settled behind the speed, took over in the concluding stages, and ran away with a dominant win. This son of Playing God will have taken good fitness benefit from his fresh run and even though he rises in class, he looks well placed again. If Rope Them In can replicate his last performance, he will be winning again. Best Bet Race 6 – #5 Rope Them In (2) 4yo Gelding | T: Steve Wolfe | J: Shaun McGruddy (59kg) +130 with Neds Next Best at Ascot: Almighty Class Almighty Class will return for his fourth racing preparation, following an underwhelming performance in The Quokka at the end of last campaign. This lightly raced four-year-old gelding has only been to the races six times for Mitchell Pateman; however, his two trial victories have shown that he has a lot of ability. From barrier six, Holly Watson can settle in the one-one position behind the speed, and if he shows a similar turn of foot that he did in his last trial, Almighty Class will prove very hard to beat. Next Best Race 9 – #6 Almighty Class (6) 4yo Gelding | T: Mitchell Pateman | J: Holly Watson (57.5kg) +180 with Picklebet Best Value at Ascot: Amjaad Summer Dickson nearly snatched a victory with Amjaad when the five-year-old mare was on debut for the new stable when she was nabbed in the shadows of the post and finished third over 1400m at Belmont. This daughter of Flying Artie settled outside the leader, and even though they went way too hard out in front, this girl battled on gamely and nearly pinched the race at massive odds with horse racing bookmakers. Steven Parnham has retained the ride, which is a massive push, and if Amjaad produces a similar performance, she will take some catching. What Cranbourne Races Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977 When Friday, October 11, 2024 First Race 5:40pm AEDT Visit Dabble Cranbourne hosts a bumper nine-race meeting this Friday night to help kickstart a massive weekend of Victorian racing. With the track rated a Good 4 and the rail set true, punter can expect perfect conditions. The first race at Cranbourne is set to commence at 5:40pm AEDT. Best Bet at Cranbourne: Our Paramour Our Paramour was a good thing beat on debut at the Cranbourne 1300m, where she was desperately held up for a run and only saw daylight late to go down by a long neck. The three-year-old followed that up with a strong effort when third in tougher company at Flemington on September 22. The Contributer filly steps up in trip again to the 2025m, and if she can get off the rail at the right time out of barrier one, Our Paramour should prove too good for maiden grade. Best Bet Race 1 – #11 Our Paramour (1) 3yo Filly | T: Mark Walker | J: Blake Shinn (55kg) Bet with PlayUp Next Best at Cranbourne: Placentia Bay Placentia Bay has not done much wrong through her two-start career. She won on debut at the Cranbourne 1600m when settling outside the lead and kicking clear, then backed it up when going down by the barest of margins at Bendigo in a photo finish. The Churchill progeny should gain a relatively uncontested lead from barrier five, and on his return to the Cranbourne mile, Placentia Bay should prove too hard to run down. Next Best Race 9 – #8 Placentia Bay (5) 4yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Ben Allen (59.5kg) Bet with Bet365 Best Value at Cranbourne: Queen Amanjena Despite being rolled as a short-priced favourite on debut at Geelong, Queen Amanjena looks ideally placed as she steps up to 1300m. The Per Incanto filly was left flat-footed when the whips were cracking over 1130m, so the rise in trip should suit this girl perfectly. From barrier one, Carleen Hefel will have Queen Amanjena stalking the lead throughout, and if she can show a turn of foot, she represents great each-way value with horse racing bookmakers. What Caulfield Guineas Day 2024 Where Caulfield Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria When Saturday, October 12, 2024 First Race 12:15pm AEDT Visit Dabble The Caulfield Cup Carnival gets underway on Saturday afternoon, when a monster 10-race card is scheduled for Caulfield Racecourse. The Caulfield Guineas (1600m) is supported by the Toorak Handicap (1600m) and Might And Power Stakes (2000m) on a super day of Group 1 racing. The rail sticks in its true position, and with the track already rated a Good 4, there will be no excuses for fancied runners throughout the day. Caulfield Guineas Day 2024 is set to commence at 12:15pm AEDT. Race 1: BM80 Handicap (1700m) Nails Murphy beat all but Regal Zeus when facing a similar field over 1600m at this track on September 21. The son of Sioux Nation simply couldn’t run down the leader in a speed-dominated affair, but he was bridging the gap throughout the home straight to suggest 1700m will be ideal. It is his first crack at the trip, but with the in-form Jaylah Kennedy on board claiming 2kg from barrier four, Nails Murphy will be given every opportunity in running to go one better. Selections: 3 NAILS MURPHY 11 EXTREME VIRTUE 8 SABAN 5 LE ZEBRA Race 2: 3YO Fillies Plate (1200m) Although Erno’s Cube will be having her first start the ‘Melbourne way’, she should prove too classy for this lot. She finished under a length behind Ameena in Group 2 company first-up, then backed it up with a respectable performance when defeated under two lengths by Autumn Glow last time out. As long as John Allen does not get caught wide from barrier nine, Erno’s Cube will prove hard to hold out. Selections: 1 ERNO’S CUBE 2 SILMARILLION 3 I AM VELVET 4 KUROYANAGI Next Best Race 2 – #1 Erno’s Cube (9) 3yo Filly | T: Ciaron Maher | J: John Allen (58.5kg) +380 with Neds Race 3: Group 3 Northwood Plume Stakes (1200m) Charm Stone is set to have her first start in over a year when she returns in the 2024 Northwood Plume Stakes. She was last seen finishing a length off Militarize in the Group 1 Golden Rose, just on the heels on Cylinder. This is much easier, and at an each-way price with horse racing bookmakers, Charm Stone is set to run a bold race fresh. Selections: 1 CHARM STONE 6 A LITTLE DEEP 10 KUNDALINI 9 EXTRATWO Best Value Race 3 – #1 Charm Stone (14) 4yo Mare | T: Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) | J: Damian Lane (58kg) +900 with Playup Race 4: Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m) See You In Heaven was forced to sustain a long sprint when trying to chase down Grinzinger Belle last time out. However, with a better draw and a slight weight advantage in the 2024 Ladies Day Vase, the recipe for success looks clear for the Adelaide mare. She will need to absorb a genuine tempo, but with a strong finish, See You In Heaven will be seeing her rivals in the winning stall. Selections: 3 SEE YOU IN HEAVEN 2 GRINZINGER BELLE 11 FIRE OF ETNA 14 CITY OF LIGHTS Ladies Day Vase Race 4 – #3 See You In Heaven (8) 5yo Mare | T: Richard & Chantelle Jolly | J: Craig Williams (58kg) +450 with Dabble Race 5: Listed Weekend Hussler (1400m) Jimmysstar unleashed a breathtaking finish when returning from a spell over 1100m at this track, and the step up to 1400m will only help him. He is tactically versatile, so Blake Shinn will have plenty of options upon settling. Whether he goes forward or settles towards the rear, if Jimmysstar is as good as everyone thinks he is, he just wins this. Selections: 7 JIMMYSSTAR 13 WHO DARES 6 COASTWATCH 15 RUNNING BY Best Bet Race 5 – #7 Jimmysstar (6) 5yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Blake Shinn (57kg) +120 with Bet365 Race 6: Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) Fancy Man resumed over the Caulfield 2000m in a similar race to this, and although forced to travel wide with no cover, he only went down by 2.8 lengths. The seven-year-old draws perfectly in barrier two for the 2024 Herbert Power Stakes and has the option to lead this field up under Daniel Stackhouse. With just 55.5kg on his back, if Fancy Man can gain a cheap sectional or two out in front, he should be booking his ticket to the Caulfield Cup. Selections: 6 FANCY MAN 4 GEAR UP 10 DASHING DUCHESS 3 POST IMPRESSIONIST Herbert Power Stakes Race 6 – #6 Fancy Man (2) 7yo Gelding | T: Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald | J: Daniel Stackhouse (55.5kg) +900 with Picklebet Race 7: Group 1 Might And Power Stakes (2000m) Mr Brightside was narrowly denied in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) first-up before overhauling Pride Of Jenni in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m). He then reeled off a strong finish to close within 1.5 lengths of Jenni in the Feehan Stakes (1600m) last time out, which suggests he is going beautifully. Mr B will gain a perfect run in transit from barrier one, and when Craig Williams asks him for the ultimate effort, he should be too good once again in the 2024 Might And Power Stakes. Selections: 1 MR BRIGHTSIDE 6 DENY KNOWLEDGE 8 COCO SUN 5 ATISHU Might And Power Stakes Race 7 – #1 Mr Brightside (1) 7yo Gelding | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Mr Brightside (59kg) -142.86 with Picklebet Race 8: Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) Is the Caulfield Guineas Broadsiding’s to lose? Horse betting sites seem to think so, but is there an all-time upset brewing in Saturday’s $3 million feature? Click here for our full preview of the 2024 Caulfield Guineas Race 9: Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) Star Patrol is having his first start in close to a year, but this bloke fires fresh and can run a bold race against more-fancied runners. The six-year-old gelding has three wins and a minor placing from six first-up runs, including strong victories at the start of his last two campaigns. With roughie Celui expected to run along at a strong clip, the race sets up perfectly for Star Patrol to unleash a powerful finish in the 2024 Schillaci Stakes. Selections: 6 STAR PATROL 2 MORNINGTON GLORY 3 RECOMMENDATION 1 OSCAR’S FORTUNE Schillaci Stakes Race 9 – #6 Star Patrol (8) 6yo Gelding | T: Clinton McDonald | J: Ben Melham (58.5kg) +750 with Boombet Race 10: Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) Antino may not get a better chance at Group 1 success than he does in the 2024 Toorak Handicap. He brings in perfect weight-for-age form with gallant runs behind Pride Of Jenni and Mr Brightside, while the conditions should suit him better than race favourite Another Wil, who has drawn awkwardly. IMAGE What 2024 Hill Stakes Day Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142 (Link if we have track page) When Saturday, October 12, 2024 First Race 12:35pm AEDT Visit Dabble Metro racing returns to Rosehill Gardens on Saturday afternoon, with the $2 million Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m) headlining a bumper 10-part program. The rail is out plus 3m the entire circuit, and with no significant rainfall predicted to hit the course proper, punters can anticipate a genuine Good 4 surface throughout the afternoon. All the action is scheduled to get underway at 12:35pm local time. Race 1: BM72 Midway Handicap (1400m) The Jack Pilkington-trained Alabama State gets one more chance to make amends after being beaten favourite in his last two appearances. He had excuses two starts back after drawing the carpark, and he ran into a smart one in the form of Unique Ambition in his most recent outing on September 28. He’s well-placed with 53kgs on his back, and with gate five allowing Kerrin McEvoy to land close to the one-one throughout the 1400m journey, Alabama State should be right in this BM72 Midway to kick-off proceedings. Selections: 16 ALABAMA STATE 14 TOTOKA 12 LLEWELLYN 2 PEACE OFFICER Race 2: Class 3 Highway Handicap (1500m) The dartboard will be needed for this one as horse racing bookmakers have marked this Highway contest $8.50 the field. Egyptologist gets the nod, however, heading into this in search of a hat-trick of wins. The son of American Pharoah has only missed the frame once in his short six-start career, and still appears to have plenty of upside as he tackles Highway company for the first time. Regan Bayliss should be working into a stalking position from barrier five, and provided he can get out in this massive field of 19, Egyptologist could prove hard to hold out. Selections: 15 EGYPTOLOGIST 3 DON STEFANO 2 WIGGLES 4 ONE BEAT NO BEAT Race 3: BM88 Handicap (2000m) Bear On The Loose got a pass mark first-up at Randwick on September 21 and should take major benefit with a fitness run under his belt. He was only headed by Floating on that occasion and looked to be holding his other rivals with relative ease as he went through the line. There’s no speed engaged in this BM88 contest, so with Nash Rawiller likely to take this race by the scruff of the neck, punters can expect Bear On The Loose to be giving a bold sight when the whips are cracking as he attempts to make every post a winner once again. Selections: 6 BEAR ON THE LOOSE 9 MEDATSU 1 CABOCHE 8 MARE OF MT BULLER Race 4: Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) The Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) is for the three-year-olds, where the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Henlein appears ready to peak third-up. The Dundeel colt was powering through the line in his most recent start at Moonee Valley in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) on September 27, only being bested by genuine Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) contender, Evaporate. Stepping out to the 1800m should be ideal for this lightly raced galloper, and provided he gets any luck from barrier 11 under Tommy, Henlein can securing victory before looking towards some Group 1 staying features later in the spring. Selections: 2 HENLEIN 1 SWIFTFALCON 3 EL CASTELLO 4 DUVANA Gloaming Stakes Race 4 – #2 Henlein (11) 3yo Colt | T: Anthony & Sam Freedman | J: Tommy Berry (56.5kg) +270 with Neds Race 5: Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) It’s D-Day for Switzerland as he heads into the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) on the back of a disappointing effort first-up in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 14. He was fired up on that occasion and never settled after racing on-speed without cover throughout the 1200m, leaving pundits suggesting the Snitzel colt is simply more effective ridden with cover. He gets every chance to do just that from barrier four under Nash Rawiller, and if Switzerland doesn’t perform well in this, it’s hard to see this guy figuring in any major spring features in the near future. Selections: 2 SWITZERLAND 1 COLEMAN 8 HIGH OCTANE 4 GATSBY’S Roman Consul Stakes Race 5 – #2 Switzerland (4) 3yo Colt | T: Chris Waller | J: Nash Rawiller (56.5kg) +600 with Playup Race 6: Listed Tapp-Craig (1400m) The James Cummings-trained Snack Bar boasts some impressive form-lines this preparation and looks well-placed in the $500,000 Listed Tapp-Craig (1400m). He only been defeated by a combined 3.3 lengths across his two starts, running into a couple of star three-year-olds in the form of Autumn Glow and Lady Shenandoah. This appears to be a significant drop in quality compared to what he’s lined up against thus far, and although Zac Lloyd will need to ping across from the wide draw (10) to ensure he doesn’t get cast wide without cover, Snack Bar has the ability to drop this lot turning for home. Selections: 5 SNACK BAR 6 JUST PARTY 4 STOLI BOLLI 12 MORE TERRITORIES Next Best Race 6 – #5 Snack Bar (10) 3yo Gelding | T: James Cummings | J: Zac Lloyd (55kg) +400 with Dabble Race 7: Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m) The Grahame Begg-trained Nonconformist represents terrific each-way value with horse betting sites in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m). The son of Rebel Rader was doing his best work late in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 7, on a day where it was a massive advantage to be on-speed. His second-up profile doesn’t read well, only finding the minor money once in seven starts; however, he’s never been a first-up horse wither, and the way he savaged the line suggests he’s in terrific order. He gets a soft run from stall five, so if there’s an upset in the 2024 Hill Stakes, expect it to be Nonconformist. Selections: 5 NONCONFORMIST 4 KOVALICA 2 ROYAL PATRONAGE 3 ATTRITION Hill Stakes Race 7 – #5 Nonconformist (5) 8yo Gelding | T: Grahame Begg | J: Harry Coffey (59kg) +1200 with Bet Race 8: Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) No one missed the stunning return of Gringotts in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Stakes (1400m) on September 21. The son of Per Incanto should’ve won comfortably with even luck when trying to get clear in the concluding stages, still having the audacity to get within a lip of Mchale in the concluding stages. The big field with a genuine tempo should suit this progressive five-year-old, and with Tommy Berry likely to gain an economical run in transit from stall seven, it’s hard to oppose Gringotts in the $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes (1400m). Selections: 10 GRINGOTTS 5 SEMANA 3 HERE TO SHOCK 9 ENCAP Alan Brown Stakes Race 8 – #10 Gringotts (7) 5yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Tommy Berry (55.5kg) +300 with Picklebet Race 9: Group 3 The Nivison (1200m) Olentia returns after a 182-day spell, and although she comes in lacking race-day fitness off one barrier trial, the daughter of Zoustar oozes class. The Chris Waller barn thought enough of her to be tested in Group 1 company behind stable companion Zougotcha at the end of last preparation, and although she didn’t figure in the finish, she was hitting the line well. She boasts a formidable first-up record of four starts for three wins and another minor placing to her name, and provided the breaks fall her way from gate three, Olentia can continue building on that record. Selections: 3 OLENTIA 4 COCO JAMBOO 6 A LITTLE DEEP 9 BLANC DE BLANC The Nivison Race 9 – #3 Olentia (3) 5yo Mare | T: Chris Waller | J: Tommy Berry (57kg) +170 with Boombet Race 10: BM78 Handicap (1100m) Pharari was a good thing licked at this course and distance on September 28 and should be looking for back-to-back Sydney wins. The Ciaron Maher-trained mare had nowhere to go before exploding in the final furlong when it was all over, leaving favourite backers holding their head in their hands as she passed the post. Zac Lloyd takes the reins this time from barrier one, and provided he can get off the inside at a crucial stage, Pharari should be lapping this lot. Reliance on interstate jockeys continues in the NT
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in BOAY Racing News
NSW jockey Paul Payne is yet another interstate who is set to make his debut in the NT when he appears at the Alice Springs meeting on Saturday. It’s no secret that there has been a jockey shortage in the Northern Territory. There have been 10 meetings in the NT since the Darwin Cup on August 5, with nine interstate riders appearing at either Darwin or Alice Springs. They include Victoria’s Hannah Le Blanc, Matthew Chadwick, Makisha Salter, SA’s Georgie Catania, Caitlin Tootell and Monika Wolanin, Queensland’s Carl Spry – a former Darwin rider – and Isabella Teh, and WA’s Kyra Yuill. NSW pair Paul Payne and Jeff Kehoe will make their Alice Springs debut on Saturday. It’s not a desperate situation in the NT, however there were a host of scratchings at a Darwin and Alice Springs meeting in late September due to a lack of jockeys. Since Darwin Cup Day, a number of regular NT riders have been conspicuous by their absence. Paul Shiers (bicep), Wayne Davis (back) and Phil Crich (illness) are sidelined, while Casey Hunter is back riding in her home state of WA and apprentice Jade Hampson is currently on-loan based on the Gold Coast. Fellow apprentice Emma Lines, third in the 2022/23 Top End and Country jockeys’ premiership before finishing second last season, is on an enforced sabbatical and Victorian jockey Mark Pegus has departed. Adam Nicholls is back riding after shaking a wrist injury, while Stan Tsaikos, Ianish Luximon and Dakota Gillett have returned from suspension. Jarrod Todd, Vanessa Arnott, Sonja Logan, Aaron Sweeney, Nicholls and Tsaikos are based in Darwin. Alice Springs accommodates Paul Denton, Jessie Philpot, Dan Morgan, Lek Maloney, Luximon and Gillett. “We’ve been a little bit light on for various reasons, so it’s good to have those interstate riders,” Thoroughbred Racing NT chief executive officer Andrew O’Toole said. “Stan, Ianish and Dakota are back and that has improved numbers. “Jade and Emma last rode in Darwin on Cup Day, I’m not sure of Emma’s plans at this stage. “It’s unlikely Casey is coming back anytime soon to the Top End. “Paul (Shiers) is back riding work which is good news, and I believe that Wayne needed another MRI on his back to just double check that he was right to go. “Wayne hasn’t been able to resume work, but hopefully that will change by the end of October or early November. “Phil has had quite an ordeal and he won’t be back anytime soon, if at all.” Raymond Vigar, who has won the Darwin Cup, Palmerston Sprint and Alice Springs Cup, has not ridden since New Year’s Day in 2021, but is on the comeback trail. “He’s got a trackwork rider’s licence and has got a bit of weight to lose to be considered for a jockey’s licence, but he is riding a lot of work for trainer Tayarn Halter here in Darwin,” O’Toole said. “Raymond is a good young quality rider, but he ran into a few hurdles along the way and it’s good to have him back.” Meanwhile, Le Blanc currently shares the lead in the Alice Springs and Provincial premiership with Logan and Tsaikos with four wins. What Eagle Farm Races Where Eagle Farm Racecourse – 230 Lancaster Rd, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, October 12, 2024 First Race 12:43pm AEST Visit Dabble The Queensland Cup and Members Cup will headline a massive 10-race card at Eagle Farm this Saturday afternoon, where the first race is set to kick off at 12:43pm AEST. The track was rated as a Heavy 9 at the time of acceptances; however, with no rain forecast for Friday and Saturday, expect an upgrade into the Soft range by raceday. The rail will be in the +4.5m position for the entire circuit. Queensland Cup tip: Nikau Spur Nikau Spur was one of the best closers in the Toowoomba Cup over 2000m last start as the Corey & Kylie Geran-trained gelding finished second behind Red Wave, beaten by a head on the line. With three solid runs under his belt this campaign, the son of Proisir appears ready to win fourth-up over 2400m in the Listed feature. From barrier one, James Orman will need an ounce of luck to get off the fence, and if they get it, Nikau Spur will prove hard to hold out. Queensland Cup Race 8 – #3 Nikau Spur (1) 8yo Gelding | T: Corey & Kylie Geran | J: James Orman (58.5kg) +300 with Dabble Members Cup tip: Battlefield Following his narrow victory at Toowoomba over 1200m previously, Battlefield will rise in grade and distance to compete in the Listed Members Cup. This son of Deep Field ran home strongly from the back of the field to nab Our Magnus on the winning post, claiming his fourth win in his last five runs. With the Barry Lockwood-trained gelding dropping down in the weights to 53kg and receiving an economical run from barrier one, Battlefield will get every chance to claim a black type victory. Members Cup Race 10 – #13 Battlefield (1) 4yo Gelding | T: Barry Lockwood | J: Robbie Dolan (53kg) +350 with Bet365 Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Fleur Du Monde Fleur Du Monde was an impressive winner at Doomben over 2000m two starts back before putting in an average performance at the Gold Coast on September 21. The Chris Waller-trained mare has been given three weeks between runs and will return to a track where she has only missed the placings once from five starts. With good speed expected, James Orman can settle Fleur Du Monde in the one-one position and stalk the speed throughout before finishing over the top of her rivals late. Best Bet Race 2 – #6 Fleur Du Monde (6) 5yo Mare | T: Chris Waller | J: James Orman (58kg) +300 with Picklebet Next Best at Eagle Farm: Tectonic Plate Daniel Bowman has given Tectonic Plate a six-week freshen since her third-place finish at Doomben on August 31, which ended her three-win streak. This daughter of Supido settled at the back of a big field and worked home nicely down the outside; however, she couldn’t make up the ground on the winner and finished 1.1 lengths off Hold On Honey. Tectonic Plate strikes a weaker contest here, and with softer conditions expected to favour her, she can return to winning ways. Next Best Race 5 – #4 Tectonic Plate (2) 5yo Mare | T: Daniel Bowman | J: Cejay Graham (54.5kg) +380 with Neds Best Value at Eagle Farm: Who Ordered Dafish Who Ordered Dafish produced an encouraging first-up run at Doomben, where the Kevin Kemp-trained galloper ran home down the middle of the track to finish third over 1350m. Although this son of Headwater rises in class, stepping up to 1500m and striking a Soft track will suit him down to the ground. With the aid of Emily Lang’s 3kg claim, Who Ordered Dafish gets into the race with 53kg and looks an attractive each-way bet with horse racing bookmakers. Jockey Regan Bayliss expertly timed his sectionals to hold off all challengers in the shadows of the post. The son of Satono Aladddin used his early speed to lob in the lead from barrier two but did have some company in the form of Kintyre ($41.00), ensuring they went at a genuine clip. Once he galloped clear of the outsider, there was only one late closer that issued a major challenge, as Tom Kitten ($2.50) made massive inroads down the centre of the course after a luckless run in transit. 2022: Smart Kiwi holds off rivals Pre-race Gloaming Stakes favourite Sharp ‘N’ Smart held off fast finishing rivals Matcha Latte and Williamsburg in a thrilling photo finish in the re-scheduled Gloaming Stakes at Warwick Farm. Traditionally run over the 1800m at Randwick, but with horrid weather and the abandonment of the card over the weekend, Racing NSW elected to run it over the shorter trip (1600m) during a mid-week card to allow trainers to prep their respective gallopers for the Group 1 Spring Champions Stakes 10 days later. It was Victorian visitor Captain Pluto injecting the speed into the race while the eventual winner, and NZ-trained galloper from the Graeme and Deborah Rogerson yard, Sharp ‘N’ Smart was able to box-seat in behind what was a truly well run affair. Williamsburg who was luckless at the start and Matcha Latte went back from the wider draws, the latter then pressed forward to be wide without cover the trip. The mid-race move from Matcha Latte made sure it was a grandstand finish at the post with Sharp ‘N’ Smart barely scraping in, while Williamsburg surged into third place with a barnstorming run. 2021: Head Of State surges late Head Of State, an up-and-coming stayer, secured his second career victory in the Gloaming Stakes, edging out Profondo in a hard-fought battle. Pulling away from the pack, the duo engaged in a thrilling duel, with Head Of State gradually asserting his dominance to clinch the win by a neck. The field trailed by nearly four lengths behind the leading pair, highlighting the intensity of the contest. 2020: Love Tap makes a mess of rivals Unbeaten 3-year-old gelding Love Tap delivered a dominant performance at Rosehill, cruising to victory in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m). Sent off as the heavily-backed odds-on favourite, Love Tap was immediately taken to the front by top jockey Nash Rawiller. After dictating terms from the outset, Rawiller gave Love Tap a mid-race breather between the 1000m and 600m mark. The gelding then surged ahead after straightening and never looked in danger. As they approached the finish, Rawiller eased him down, yet Love Tap still extended his lead, winning comfortably. Delta Blues has died following complications from laminitis. PIcturre: Racing Photos. Delta Blues, the Japanese Melbourne Cup winning horse, has died after complications with laminitis. Old Friends Japan, which looks after retired racehorses in Japan, announced the 2006 Melbourne Cup champion died on Tuesday. Delta Blues and largely Japanese racing shot to prominence when he beat home favourite and fellow Japanese runner Pop Rock to win the Melbourne Cup. “We are saddened to announce that Delta Blues passed away on October 8, 2024 due to complications from laminitis,” Old Friends Japan said in a statement. “He made history in 2006 as the first and only Japanese horse to win the Melbourne Cup and continued to be cherished long after his retirement. Rest in peace, Delta. “He was a special (horse) to us and his memory will live on in our hearts. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved with Delta Blues so far.” Prior to the Melbourne Cup, Delta Blues finished third in the Caulfield Cup and won major international races including the 2004 Kikuka Sho and the Stayers Stakes in 2005. Delta Blues, who was partnered by Yasunari Iwata in Melbourne, was an $18 shot to win the Melbourne Cup, behind favourite Pop Rock ($6). Horse racing news View the full article

What 2024 Group 1 Caulfield Guineas Where Caulfield Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria When Saturday, October 12, 2024 Prizemoney $3,000,000 Distance 1600m Conditions Set Weights 2023 winner Griff (15) | T: Ciaron Maher | J: Ben Melham (57kg) Visit Dabble The Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) headlines a stacked 10-race meeting at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon. A field of 13 three-year-olds will duke it out for the $3 million on offer, with Godolphin’s Broadsiding expected to dominate the time-honoured event. Punters and bookmakers alike both expect this to be a one-act affair, but is there perhaps an upset brewing in the Guineas? 2024 Caulfield Guineas odds Horse racing bookmakers are taking no chances on Broadsiding, installing him as a $1.60 favourite to claim a fourth Group 1 triumph on just his ninth career start. The only other runner at a single-figure quote is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Mayfair ($7), who finished a half-length off the favourite when they clashed in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m). Angel Capital ($10) and Evaporate ($13) are the best of the local hopes, with upwards of $18 available for every other runner in Saturday’s feature. 2024 Caulfield Guineas speed map As expected with Waterhouse & Bott runners, both Mayfair and Wanaruah look to be the speed influences in the Guineas. The likes of Public Attention, Feroce and Evaporate will all look to land a stalking position, while Rue De Royale and Tropicus look set to lob midfield. Race favourite Broadsiding will be alongside key market rival Angel Capital as the pair turn for home, with both likely to come storming home down the heart of the track. Continue reading for HorseBetting’s top selections and $100 betting strategy for the 2024 Caulfield Guineas. Recommended! The Better Bettors! Australian-owned and operated bookmaker! Join MarantelliBet 18+ Gamble Responsibly. THINK. IS THIS A BET YOU REALLY WANT TO PLACE? Caulfield Guineas 2024 preview & form Broadsiding had no right to win the Golden Rose first-up from a spell — a feat that had never been achieved prior. He looks to be destined to chase Cox Plate (2040m) glory after Saturday, which shows just how much class he has on his rivals. James McDonald will have him at the rear of the field throughout, but when asked for the ultimate effort, Broadsiding should put this race away within a couple of strides. Angel Capital won in arrogant fashion at Moonee Valley in Listed company over 1200m, then took out the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) after sprinting sharper in the slower section of the track. The Harry Angel colt will likely be alongside Broadsiding when they turn for home, and despite being two or three lengths off the favourite in terms of class, he looks to have more than enough ability to account for the remainder of this field. Rue De Royale was left flat-footed when the sprint went on in the Stutt Stakes (1600m) and lost by 3.3 lengths to Evaporate, who he lines up against once more. However, his juvenile form includes running 1.8 lengths off Traffic Warden, who wasn’t beaten far by Broadsiding when the pair clashed in the Golden Rose a fortnight ago. He lacks the class that some of his rivals possess, but Rue De Royale certainly looks capable of running into the minor money. The likes of Mayfair, Wanaruah and Private Life are also good chances to fill out the exotics, but that looks like what the rest of the field is playing for. David Eustace celebrates his first win in Hong Kong. David Eustace notched his first win as trainer in his own right when Swift Ascend gave the young British horseman milestone success at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. Eustace, 32, is the youngest trainer in Hong Kong, having earned his place in one of the world’s most competitive racing jurisdictions after saddling more than 1,000 wins in Australia, where he trained in partnership with Ciaron Maher, winning the national training title and landing most of the country’s major races, including the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate and Sydney Cup. “It’s obviously a great thrill. I’m grateful for the opportunity to train the horse for the owners. I’m just delighted for the team – my assistant Cash (Lee), to build a fantastic team of staff that have worked really hard the last few months. They deserve many plaudits,” Eustace said. A nephew of former Hong Kong trainer David Oughton – whose son and Eustace’s first cousin, Charlie, was on track to watch Swift Ascend’s win – Eustace said: “Great to have my cousin here, really special to have family here for my first win. Great to get the first win, but it’s a long season ahead.” Eustace fittingly struck for the first time in his new surroundings with a horse he trained in Australia in tandem with Maher when the Lord Kanaloa gelding was named Citizenship. “He won for me in Australia and he’s now won a race for me here. I don’t think anyone could have predicted that,” Eustace said, who scored with only his sixth starter in Hong Kong after saddling three second place-getters. “I think the horse (Swift Ascend) can go on. He’s still a little bit green, he was off the bridle when he hit the front and he had a bit of a look around, but the blinkers really helped. He got a really great ride from Zac. Plan A didn’t really eventuate, so he went to plan B and there’s no better man or decision maker around this track.” Swift Ascend was Purton’s third winner on the card, and the Australian was delighted to deliver Eustace’s maiden victor. “It’s good, it’s a nice feeling when you get someone off the mark, and it’s even better feeling when you deliver their first winner in Hong Kong. It’s special. I know what it feels like, I know what it means,” Purton said. “I’ll be on his wall forever – that’s even better.” Jamie Richards notched his first win of the campaign with Gallant Valour’s success under Hugh Bowman, ending an exasperating run of outs for the New Zealander. With two seconds and five thirds from his previous 39 starters, Richards was relieved after Gallant Valour’s short-head victory. “It’s been a bit of a frustrating start to the season to be honest, we haven’t had a lot of luck,” Richards said. “The horses have been running quite well and we’ve had a lot of placings but Hong Kong is a very competitive place and it’s just great to get a winner – every winner counts and we’re pleased to be on the board. “Last year I tried to start fast and it didn’t work and this year I just thought I’d take my time a little bit, but I didn’t expect to have to wait this long to get the first win on the board. “The horses are running well though and we’ve got a lot of young horses in the stable that just need a little bit of time. It will just give the owners a little bit of confidence that we can get one over the line and take a bit of pressure off.” Hong Kong International Sale graduate Super Unicorn careered to a 5.75-length victory under Purton, impressing Frankie Lor in the process. “The margin was a little bit surprising. Last start, it was his first time here (Happy Valley) and Zac said he was a bit keen early and then in the straight, he got a bit lost. This time, the pace was fast which was good for him,” Lor said. Purton completed a race-to-race double when Pierre Ng’s Aurora Lady swept to a 4.25-length triumph. Ng further consolidated his lead in the trainers’ championship with I Can’s win. Dragon Delight posted his second win in Hong Kong with success for David Hayes. Ridden positively by Ellis Wong, the Wandjina gelding won twice in Australia when known as Door To Door and trained by Patrick Payne. Douglas Whyte’s Double Show slotted his second course and distance victory under Harry Bentley before Hayes combined with Karis Teetan to seal a double with Chateauneuf. The Fasig-Tipton October Digital Sale, which was delayed by a day due to an unexpected service outage, concluded Wednesday evening with 224 horses sold for a combined gross of $3,466,300. With over 830 bidders registered for the sale, bidding had opened Thursday, Oct. 3, and was scheduled to close Tuesday, Oct. 8, until the technical issue forced officials at the sales company to pivot slightly and conclude a day later than scheduled. “I want to say a big thank you to all participants for working through some unexpected technical issues with us,” said Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales Leif Aaron. “We were able to sell 224 horses at a 75% clearance rate. Our impromptu Day 2 had robust action. We are looking forward to a tremendous December Digital Sale.” In a catalogue which featured a wide spectrum of offerings ranging from horses of racing age, breeding stock, weanlings, and yearlings, the topper was Commuted (Gun Runner), who sold for $150,000 to Agent Willowbrook Stables. Sold as hip 47, the 3-year-old bay colt has made three starts, most recently winning a 10-furlong maiden special weight at Churchill Downs Sept. 29 while under the tutelage of Kenny McPeek. Registering an 84 Beyer Speed Figure in that win, he was consigned to Fasig-Tipton by Gainesway as agent for Part of the Walking L Dispersal. Commuted is out of the unraced Final Holiday (Harlan's Holiday) from the extended family of two-time Canadian Horse of the Year Chief Bearhart. Other top offerings included the winning Lambeth (Arrogate) (hip 16), consigned by Juddmonte and sold for $135,000 to Bigman, and graded-placed multiple winner Northern Flame (Flameaway) (hip 360), consigned by Gainesway, agent and hammered to G.O.A.T. Racing Stable for $125,000. Like Commuted, both are sophomores offered as horses of racing age. Fasig-Tipton, which has a number of brick and mortar sales upcoming over the next two months, including the 'Night of the Stars' November Sale scheduled for Nov. 4, will host its next Digital Sale in December. Nominations will close Nov. 20 for the December Digital sale, which will open Dec. 5 and close Dec. 10.
