The five-year-old will be out to go one better in the traditional New Zealand Cup lead up following his gritty second placing in the Group 3 feature last year. The runner-up effort was the first in a string of top-level tilts Republican Party made in what was his first full season of racing New Zealand’s best older pacers. With that year of open class grind behind him, Dalgety now wants to see a more hardened version of his stable star. “Last year there was no hiding, he had to step up to race the best and he did so with merit.” “There were some ups and downs along the way but overall, but he won the Canterbury Classic and placed in Hannon, the Ashburton Flying Stakes and the Auckland Cup.” “It can be a shock to their systems stepping from age group racing into that open grade but you’d have to say he has handled it well.” “After doing battle in these good races, they to get that hardening from the experience.” “I guess we will find out pretty quickly, but all signs from the way he has come back are positive.” Republican Party had one run back ahead of last year’s Hannon, but he will go into the Oamaru feature fresh up this year. Ruby Roe Sunday’s Nevele R Fillies Series heat looks to map perfectly for Ruby Roe. She’s drawn barrier 1 with a noted front-runner in All You Need Is Me drawn right beside her in barrier 2. All You Need Is Me is highly talented and will take plenty of catching if she is able to lead. But Ruby Roe will be a massive threat is she is able to sit in the trail, especially on the strength of her fresh up third in recent heat of this series at Addington. The three-year-old flashed home wide on the track after getting no favours from barrier 9. Fitter for that outing, Ruby Roe looks hard to beat if she’s anywhere close to the pace on Sunday. Bring On The Muscle Bring On The Muscle’s talent hasn’t been questioned during his short career, but his manners have been. Judging by his effortless fresh up win at Winton the classy trotter has returned in a great frame of mind and is ready to show his true worth this prep. Bring On The Muscle made a brilliant beginning in his last start victory and if he is able to do so again on Sunday it will be a huge help in overcoming his 30m handicap on Sunday. Perun A big last start performance to win at Addington suggests Perun will be tough to beat in the Hannon Day finale. The pacer worked mid-race before taking over in the straight and then cruising to victory, looking to knock off with no real competition around him. He steps up in grade in race 10, but it looks a grade rise Perun can handle and he should give his backers a strong run for their money. Adelaide-based jockey George Catania, who kick-started her career in Tasmania, returns to the NT on Sunday to ride at the Alice Springs meeting at Pioneer Park Adelaide-based Georgie Catania had Saturday off, so she has once again agreed to return Alice Springs on Sunday. Catania made her Pioneer Park debut on August 25, and it proved a memorable occasion when she punched home two winners on the five-event program. After getting stablemates Quanapirri Bay and Flying Start over the line for trainer Greg Connor, the 32-year-old came within a whisker of claiming a treble when Connor’s Delago Lad suffered a narrow loss. She had four rides a fortnight later, with her best result a second on Flying Start. Catania, who rides for leading SA trainers Richard and Chantelle Jolly, has six rides on the seven-event program this weekend, and if form is any guide, she could have a good day. The former Tasmanian jockey will partner Connor’s Quanapirri Bay ($2.70), Filthy Rich ($6) and Bold Tropic ($15), Will Savage’s Mi Mijo ($6), Sheila Arnold’s Lord George ($11) and Ray Viney’s Tango Stepz ($21). Her best chance is perhaps Quanapirri Bay over 1000m (Class 2), with the five-year-old gelding having only missed finishing in the top five on two occasions in 14 Red Centre appearances. He has had 14 starts for Connor, and although he has only had success on two occasions, the son of Rubick never seems to disappoint. Racing SA’s jockey coach Dean Pettit contacted Catania’s partner Taylor Johnstone, an Adelaide apprentice aligned with the Andrew Gluyas stable, to ask if she was interested in going to Alice Springs, where she would also ride on a dirt track for the first time. For various reasons, nine regular jockeys have not been spotted in Darwin and Alice Springs this season, and Thoroughbred Racing NT has had to rely on interstate riders. “It was brought to my attention that there was a shortage of riders in Alice and if I was interested to go,” Catania said. “I thought it would be a great experience and something different – I got a little bit of success up there the first meeting, which was good. “You learn pretty quick that you’ve got to be very positive out of the machine, even if you are going to be back behind the field. “I find that they jump and run in Alice. “If you have got the right horse you can lead and dictate, but you’ve got to have something strong enough to do so. “I’ve drawn good barriers in most races this weekend, so hopefully I can just land in a position and give them every chance.” Horse racing news View the full article

Making her belated U.S. debut in Friday's opening-day Winter Memories Stakes at the Belmont at the Big A, French import Les Reys (Fr) (Kheleyf) split horses decisively with time ticking away and was home first to record a second consecutive victory at stakes level. Scratched down onto the rail, the gray filly was content to take back and raced just behind midfield while perhaps a fraction keen as Ori (Hard Spun) came across from her widest draw to cut out decent splits up front. Angled out into the clear at about the midway point of the backstretch, Les Reys traveled in the three-wide line and was asked to follow the heavily favored GSP Dynamic Pricing (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) for the run around the turn. While the chalk was committed to a wide run, Rosario opted for a path closer to the rail. Les Reys split horses entering the final furlong and again in the dying strides to be up for the victory. Ori held for second ahead of Dynamic Pricing in third. Trained in France by Didier Guillemin, Les Reys was a maiden winner at first asking at Bordeaux Le Bouscat last September, belied odds of 26-1 to beat the boys in a soft-ground handicap over 1300 meters at ParisLongchamp May 9 and capped that portion of her career with a defeat of her peers in the one-mile Listed Prix Volterra at the Paris venue June 9. GIII Pocahontas (Race 8) – Pretty Sure (#6) broke her maiden like a filly with a future, making a sustained four-wide rally on the far turn en route to a dominating come-from-behind debut score for Brendan Walsh going six furlongs at Ellis Park Aug. 25. She obviously lacks seasoning and faces a very tough group in this deep renewal of the Pocahontas–headed by deserving favorite Kimchi Cat (#13)–for just her second career start stretching to a one-turn mile, but she should have plenty of pace to close into if she's good enough. Out of 2009 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Beautician (Dehere), the added distance could also play to her advantage in this wide-open affair. Selection: #6 Pretty Sure (12-1). He's been training smartly since (has a pair of five-furlong bullets at Ellis and Churchill Downs on his worktab in the interim), is drawn well on the outside and is fast enough to secure a tracking trip with plenty of other speed entered in this first try at a mile. Magnitude's sire Not This Time is already responsible for six winners at the top level, including the Asmussen-trained Epicenter and Cogburn. Owner Stanley Chan announced the three-time Horse of the Year’s retirement on Friday at trainer Francis Lui’s Sha Tin stable. Chan said: “Golden Sixty has been more than just a racehorse to me and my family; he has been a companion, a friend, and a true champion. Watching him compete has been one of the greatest joys of my life. “I want to thank everyone who has been a part of his journey – his dedicated team, the fans and, most importantly, Golden Sixty himself for giving us unforgettable moments.” The Medaglia d’Oro gelding raced in the familiar white, blue and gold silks of his owner, accumulating world record earnings for a racehorse (HK$167.17 million) by crafting one of the sport’s most remarkable careers in history. Golden Sixty is known as the ‘Pride of Hong Kong’ – a testament to his standing as the hometown hero of Hong Kong racing throughout the challenging COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, he won the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) three times – in 2020, 2021 and 2023 – joining Good Ba Ba as the race’s only triple winners. Such was Golden Sixty’s domination of Hong Kong’s mile ranks, he won the Group 1 Stewards’ Cup (1600m) twice in 2021 and 2023, as well as the Group 1 FWD Champions Mile (1600m) three times in succession from 2021-2023 – the only horse to do so. Best known for his exploits over eight furlongs, Golden Sixty successfully rose to 2000m three times, including a pair of Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m) victories in 2021 and 2023, notably denying Romantic Warrior by a head in the most recent of the two. At the end of 2023, Golden Sixty received a career-high mark of 126 in the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, following on from ratings of 124 in 2022, 125 in 2021 and 124 in 2020 – illustrating his remarkable longevity among the elite level of horses in world racing. GI Wood Memorial Stakes winner Wicked Strong (Hard Spun–Moyne Abby, by Charismatic) has been pensioned from stud duty, gelded and retired to the Massachusetts farm of Centennial Farm owner Don Little, Jr. An earner of nearly $2,000,000 through his racing career which spanned from 2013 to 2015, Wicked Strong broke his maiden at second asking at Belmont Park and was third in the GIII Remsen Stakes before winning the Wood Memorial. After finishing fourth in both the GI Kentucky Derby behind California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) and the GI Belmont Stakes, he responded with a win in the GII Jim Dandy Stakes and was second by a nose in that summer's GI Travers Stakes. His 4-year-old season saw him earn placings in the GIII Excelsior Stakes, the GI Woodward Stakes and the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes before he retired after coming home fourth in the GI Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Initially retired to Spendthrift Farm, Wicked Strong sired GII Remsen Stakes winner Brooklyn Strong. He relocated to Pin Oak Lane Farm in Pennsylvania in 2020 but returned to Spendthrift Farm just this summer as a gelding and now heads to Massachusetts to join Little and his family. “We couldn't be happier to bring Wicked Strong home,” said Little, Jr. “He provided us with some of the greatest memories of our lives and we can't wait to spend the rest of his life spoiling him and thanking him… and maybe hopping aboard! Maria Borell, known for training Eclipse Champion Sprinter Runhappy (Super Saver) in the lead up to his win the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint, has been issued a trainer's license in the state of California. The Daily Racing Form first reported the news Friday. In 2016, Borell and her father, Charles, were charged in Kentucky with 43 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. The charges against her were dropped last year and the DRF noted that Borell plans to train for several clients in California. This story will be updated. Euros Wind Trebuchets Out of this auspicious Canadian slate, first up is the GI Natalma Stakes which offers entry into the GI John Deere Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. It is evident that Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse holds the numbers edge with eight of the thirteen entrants. Out of these, if Thread (Twirling Candy) chooses to run here instead of against the boys in the GI bet365 Summer Stakes, she could have an edge after she broke her maiden by 5 1/2 at second asking while sprinting over the all-weather in Toronto Sept. 6. The GIII Pocahontas Stakes might turn out to be a slugfest for Oaks points between the three fillies who are drawn to the outside. Bred and owned by the Collinsworths of Texas, Stilettos (Upstart) broke her maiden at Lone Star Park by a country mile under Bret Calhoun in late June, then won the Debutante Stakes at Ellis Park Aug. 11. To her outside is Kimchi Cat (Twirling Candy), who won second out at Saratoga in mid-July and did not miss the turf when she netted the Bolton Landing Stakes upstate Aug. 18. Both may have to keep their eye on debut winner Liam in the Dust (Liam's Map) who delivered as a well-backed favorite at Ellis in August. Kimchi Cat | Sarah Andrew Switching over to the boys, a bunch of Derby dreamers are hoping their stars align in the renewal of the GIII Iroquois Stakes. Speaking of astronomical phenoms, Jonathan's Way (Vekoma) charted a late run at first asking in Saratoga Springs Aug. 17 and the performance earned Rigney Racing's dark bay a 'TDN Rising Star' for his effort. Out of the eleven other colts in this field, Owen Almighty (Speightstown) could pose the biggest threat. The bay took to the dirt under the Twin Spires on debut and won by 3 1/2 lengths, and then drew off to take the Juvenile Stakes at Ellis Aug. 11. Finally, Authentic Strike (Authentic) looks to hand his freshman sire his first stakes win, and trainer Dale Romans has entered Mesero in a spot he has won four times. The grey's sire took home the 2016 Iroquois for the Hall of Famer–Not This Time. The Big A Is Back Venerable Aqueduct is up once again since Belmont is still under construction, and their graded Saturday offering is the GIII Fasig-Tipton Jockey Club Oaks Invitational Stakes for 3-year-old fillies over the grass. Even though there is no overwhelming morning-line favorite, LNJ Foxwoods's Mixologist (Frosted) could be the standout despite being elevated from second to first after a disqualification against optional claimers at the Spa Aug. 16. Opposing her, will be German import Lady Mary (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) who was last seen running third in the G1 German Oaks at Dusseldorf in early August and makes her U.S. debut for trainer Jack Sisterson. In the history of the G1 St Leger, it is hard to imagine a trainer going into a single renewal with a stronger hand than Aidan O'Brien enjoys on Saturday with his three sons of Galileo (Ire) all perfect candidates for the job. So perfect are the profiles of the trio for Doncaster that it is a shame for the operation that they have all come along at the same time, but in view of the long-term health of the “oldest Classic” it is fortunate for all that they have opted to send all three to post. While it is hard to get away from the feeling that Illinois (Ire) is the number one, particularly with Wayne Lordan booked, many will be looking at Jan Brueghel (Ire) and Grosvenor Square (Ire) as more than viable alternatives. Illinois completed the 14 furlongs of Royal Ascot's G2 Queen's Vase in just over three minutes, so he has already been through the pain barrier that this race demands with its all-important extra 115 yards. Runner-up in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and in the key prep, York's G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes, he has completed all the required steps to get to this point with an admirable honesty. Beaten only by Los Angeles (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) at York last month, the half-brother to Danedream (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}) is close enough to the stable's elite to warrant maximum respect. “We always thought he'd stay and the Voltigeur was a lovely trial for him,” he said. “Nice ground is important to him, he's closely related to an Arc winner so he has a lot of class and we think and hope the Leger will suit him well. We would have run him in the Derby, but City Of Troy was there. We've had the Leger in mind for a long time for him.” One thing is for sure and that is that Grosvenor Square will set a demanding test for his peers, having registered a sensational 2:56.50 winning time in the G3 Irish St Leger Trial Stakes at The Curragh. It is difficult to imagine a 20-length winner of a recognised prep not being in the first two in the betting and the feeling is that he has at least one stablemate capable of reeling him in. He's unbelievable, he has an awful lot of stamina, a very high cruising speed and is very genuine. He's a very rare horse and I think he's very exciting for people to watch. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has signed legislation that will extend the $20 million annual purse enhancement for horse racing in the state, with the appropriation now running through to 2029, the Governor's office announced Friday. Monmouth Park will receive $10 million annually for purses, with the remaining $10 million going toward purses at the Meadowlands Racetrack and Freehold Raceway, as well as money earmarked for bonuses for state-sired horses and breeders' awards. “Given the critical importance of the horse racing industry to not only the state's economy, but to farmland and open space preservation, I am signing this legislation to signal my desire for the state to continue to make this investment each year at the level directed in the bill,” said Gov. Murphy. “New Jersey's horse racing industry is a key economic engine, supporting thousands of jobs and attracting tourists and fans from around the world. The funding promised by this legislation will allow New Jersey to continue to offer one of the most exciting horse racing experiences in the nation, while also providing a boost to an industry that is integral to our economy.” The original legislation designating the purse enhancement for racing was signed by Gov. Murphy in February of 2019. That includes $20 million for purses already appropriated for the state's fiscal year 2025. Everyone knows a life in racing can be a grind, even for the most optimistically minded. While the highs are high, the lows are lower, and there's far more losing than winning. Except for Hubert Guy the past three weeks. From August 22 to September 13, 13 of Guy's equine purchases have been sent out to race. Ten of them have come back winners. The winners have included two-year-old maiden winners, a TDN Rising Star, graded stakes winners, a few promising young horses, and some useful winners. They have spanned a weanling purchase, three yearling purchases, a two-year-old buy, and several private transactions. There have been first-time starters, maiden winners, allowance and handicap horses, and two graded stakes winners at Saratoga “The first one or two, you say, `oh, I'm lucky,'” said Guy. “`I'm on a hot streak.' But it just kept going and going.” The streak began on August 22 when Freja (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}) won a Deauville handicap, and currently stretches to Friday, when Olya (Ire) (Persian King {Ire}), won a Saint-Cloud handicap for Livinia and Andre Fabre. “When you buy a horse, you always think you bought a great horse,” said Guy, standing outside the Keeneland sales pavilion on Thursday. “You come out of Keeneland, where we are now, and think you bought the best, the next Secretariat. It's the way this business works. But of course, there's a lot of disappointment. I have had quite a bit of success buying yearlings. I can't complain about that. I try to buy them thinking, `let's not go overboard.' I try and be reasonable.” During Guy's current streak, Jovialite (Medaglia d'Oro), which he bought as an OBS March two-year-old, sticks out as a special pick. She was a six-length winner in her Sept. 9 debut at Saint-Cloud, and was named a TDN Rising Star. “Jovialite might be the best horse I ever bought,” said Guy. “I bought her in Ocala at the OBS March Sale for $225,000, for the same group that we bought Onesto (Frankel) for; he was subsequently a Group 1 winner. We bought him at OBS April four years ago. Jovialite was a beautiful mover who worked well. She's a Louisiana-bred and I think that's why we didn't have a lot of opposition when we bid on her, because if she had been Kentucky-bred, she would probably be a lot more expensive.” His first graded stakes winner in the run was Beaute Cachee (Fr) (Literato {Fr}), an August 22 winner of the Grade II Ballston Spa Stakes. “Beaute Cachee was a filly I bought privately for Sol Kumin and partners, Michael Dubb, Mike Caruso, and Louis Lazzinnaro,” said Guy. “She was running in big handicaps. She ran 9th in the French Oaks. She was a medium-size filly, not very big, but she moved well and she had a very good attitude. We bought her privately, and she became a Grade I winner. She won the Jenny Wiley, and now a Grade III and a Grade II.” The undefeated Zulu Kingdom is among the streak | Sarah Andrew His next graded stakes win came from Zulu Kingdom (Ire) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}), whom he had purchased privately from Elisabeth Fabre. “The idea was that if he was good enough, he could maybe run in the Breeders' Cup at the end of the year.” Zulu Kingdom broke his maiden at Saint-Cloud on June 4, where he raced greenly to win. Guy suspected the best was yet to come. “Chad Brown did a wonderful job with him. He won the Grade II With Anticipation first time out in America. Not too shabby. We're pretty happy with that.” Child of the Moon (Fr) (The Grey Gatsby {Ire}) also won at Saratoga for Kumin, Dubb, and Lazzinnaro, taking a Sept. 2 allowance race. The group has graded aspirations for her. The 10th win in the streak came Friday at Saint-Cloud, when Olya (Ire) (Persian King {Ire}), an inexpensive Arqana October yearling, won a handicap. Guy said he never has a lot of orders to fill at the yearling sales, despite the success he has had. “I don't know why,” he said. “People probably think I can only buy horses in training. But I have a group of regular, very strong, very loyal customers,” he said, naming Kumin, Dubb, Lazzinnaro and Caruso. We have had a lot of luck together. Pretty much everything has been trained by Chad, and Chad has been a wonderful asset. He's a really good trainer, and he really understands those European horses. He gives them so much time. He's so patient.
