  1. Te Akau and Fortuna Racing’s filly Bellatrix Star (Star Witness) proved she is among Australia’s top sprinting three-year-olds last Saturday at Flemington, finishing second in the A$2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). The daughter of Star Witness was a Group Two winner during her juvenile term in New Zealand, but since relocating across to Mark Walker’s Cranbourne stable this season, she has gone to a new level with victories in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m), Gr.3 Scarborough Stakes (1200m) and Gr.2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m). Her impeccable form gave Walker confidence to press on to the feature and the filly rewarded that faith, settling near the tail of the field before surging down the inside of the track to finish 2-3/4 lengths behind a highly-impressive Switzerland, and ahead of Gr.1 The Everest (1200m) placegetter Growing Empire and Gr.1 Golden Slipper (1200m) winner Lady Of Camelot. The performance earned Bellatrix Star a further A$350,000 in stakes, bringing her total to just shy of $1 million, after being purchased for just $80,000 by David Ellis and Fortuna out of Phoenix Park’s 2023 Karaka Yearling Sales’ draft. Walker was thrilled with the effort, while indicating that the Flemington crowd may not have seen the last of Bellatrix Star over Melbourne Cup Week. “She ran terrific, the colt (Switzerland) was just too good for us on the day, but she’s probably run to her career-best even though she’s run second,” Walker said. “She might actually run on Saturday in the Champions Sprint (Gr.1, 1200m), we are nominating her and will make up our mind on Wednesday morning whether to accept. She’ll get in at a very light weight against the older horses. “She went straight to the beach facility here after the races on Saturday, she’ll spend three days there walking in the sea to help her recover and goes out in the paddock during the day. “She’ll come back into the stable on Wednesday afternoon.” Walker won last year’s A$3 million Gr.1 Champions Sprint (1200m) with superstar mare Imperatriz, and ahead of nominations, New Zealand’s TAB have Bellatrix Star rated a $11 hope, with 2024 Everest runner-up Giga Kick on top at $4.20. 2. Grant Cooksley came tantalisingly close to getting his hands on the Melbourne Cup as a jockey, and he is hoping to rectify that on Tuesday as a trainer when he lines-up Trust In You (NZ) (Sweynesse) in the two-mile feature. The South Auckland horseman rode in several editions of the time-honoured race, including a runner-up performance behind Kingston Rule in 1990 aboard the Murray Baker-trained The Phantom. This week Cooksley, who trains in partnership with Bruce Wallace, will have his chance to go one better in the race courtesy of Group Three winner Trust In You. The six-year-old son of Sweynesse, who won the Gr.3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m) at Pukekohe on New Year’s Day, heads into the Melbourne Cup in good form after finishing fourth in the Gr.1 Metropolitan (2400m) and Gr.3 St Leger Stakes (2600m) at Randwick in his last two outings, and Cooksley is hoping he can continue his rich vein of form on Tuesday. “He is going along alright,” said an understated Cooksley. “The owners want him there and he has done well to get there. It is a good race with a good crowd. Hopefully he can go a good race, which he should do.” Trust In You will be Cooksley’s first Melbourne Cup runner as a trainer, and he said there is a bit more pressure involved compared to being a jockey in the great race. “You have got more to worry about when you are training them,” he said. Trust In You will be ridden by former New Zealand-based jockey Mark Du Plessis, and is currently a $101 outsider for the Melbourne Cup with TAB bookmakers alongside fellow Kiwi hope Positivity, while Waikato stayer Sharp ‘N’ Smart is at $61. While the A$8.6 million Melbourne Cup will be Cooksley’s main priority on Tuesday, back home in New Zealand he will have five representatives at Ellerslie. Moving Melody has placed in her two starts this preparation after winning on debut back in June, and has been installed a $4 favourite for the Stella Artois 1100. Cooksley has been pleased with how she has progressed and is expecting a bold showing on Tuesday from barrier one. “Moving Melody should go well,” he said. “She had a bad draw last time and was ridden a bit too handy.” Stablemates He’s Classic and Staphanos Queen will be vying to go one better than their last start runner-up performances when they contest the Champion 2YO Sword Of State (1400m) and SkyCity Horizon 1200 respectively, while Cooksley will also be represented by Son Of Sun in the Barfoot & Thompson 2400 and Shooting Stride in the Auckland Co-op Taxis 1600. “He’s Classic had a little setback, so he might need the run, but he has been working well,” Cooksley said. “A mile-and-a-half should suit Son of Sun, we’ll find out tomorrow.” View the full article
  3. Pre-post favourite Habana (Zoustar) will head into unfamiliar territory at Ellerslie, but there is confidence in his camp that it will be a smooth transition. The six-year-old has fashioned an impressive record up to 1600m and will step out of his comfort zone for the first time on Tuesday when he runs in the Gr.3 Balmerino Stakes (2000m). All the key indicators strongly suggest the son of Zoustar will be just as effective over more ground, which will also be very much to the liking of his stablemate and race rival Terra Mitica. The pair are trained by Lance Noble for Cambridge Stud, with Habana the more fancied of the duo following his close last-start second over a mile on the course. “This race will give us a nice opportunity to see if he will get the 2000m and I think he will,” Noble said. “The way he races, he always hits the line and he’s gone well at Ellerslie before so it’s a good chance to test the waters.” Habana has won eight of his 21 starts with victories in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) and the Listed Fulton Family Mile (1600m) on his CV. “He relaxes in his races and most of the time he wins by a head or gets beaten by a short margin and that’s because he can hit the front and loaf,” Noble said. “Over 2000m, he should have something to chase and we think he’ll be competitive, especially at weight-for-age which suits him a lot better now.” Should Habana perform up to expectations in the hands of regular rider Warren Kennedy, the Gr.1 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic (2000m) on Boxing Day will be a summer target. Barnmate Terra Mitica made good progress last season with a pair of middle-distance open handicap victories and finished fourth in the Gr.3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m). The imported mare will appreciate the step up in distance after three unplaced lead-up outings. “We haven’t had the rub of the green with her yet this prep, I’m keen on the Counties Cup (Gr.3, 2100m) and couldn’t really find another 2000m race for her before that,” Noble said. “Fresh-up, they ran her off their feet and second-up it was a really wet track and then she drew the outside and was caught wide. “Her form line looks terrible for one of our horses, but she’s much better than that.” There is also a renewal of a successful association for Cambridge Stud with visiting jockey Kevin Stott, who won the Gr.1 Royal Ascot Jubilee Stakes (1200m) aboard Hello Youmzain before he embarked on his stallion career. “Warren is obviously our retained jockey and when Kevin came out here, we said if there was a chance to give him a ride or two then we would be more than happy to,” Noble said. “He’s a very accomplished jockey and an English rider with an English horse might be the key.” Noble also has a top chance at Ellerslie with Frostfair, who is likely to run in the Champion 2YO Sword Of State (1400m) in preference to the Stella Artois Handicap (1100m). “Unfortunately, Warren was committed to his wife’s horse (Subtle Power) in the 1400m and Frostfair drew three in that,” Noble said. “She drew 11 out of 11 in the 1100m and we’ve got Vinnie Colgan on in the 1400 so we’re leaning toward that. “She is very well and has had a couple of wide barriers without much luck in the running and she hasn’t been out of the first four in her life, so I’m sure she’ll be competitive.” View the full article

  6. What Ascot races Where Ascot Racecourse – 71 Grandstand Rd, Ascot WA 6104 When Tuesday, November 5, 2024 First Race 11:25am AWST Visit Dabble Ascot will host a very competitive nine-race card this Melbourne Cup Day, with the first event scheduled to jump at 11:25am AWST. Although there is rain forecast on Tuesday, it shouldn’t affect the track much, and the Good 4 rating will hold up throughout the meeting. The rail will be pushed out to the +11m position for the entire circuit, which should play favourably to on-speed runners. Burgess Queen Stakes tip: Divine Impact Divine Impact has been impressive in both of his victories this preparation, making the jump from Maiden grade to a Class 1 Handicap with relative ease. In his most recent start, the Neville Parnham-trained gelding led from start to finish to claim a dominant win over 1400m at this track on October 16. In his fifth start, the son of Playing God will retain Chris Parnham once again, and from barrier seven, expect them to settle in the first four before peeling off the leaders heels to let down with a strong finish. Burgess Queen Stakes Race 8 – #3 Divine Impact (7) 3yo Filly | T: Neville Parnham | J: Chris Parnham (54kg) +650 with Dabble Best Bet at Ascot: Mythical Dream Michael Grantham and William Pike will be seeking to kick off their Melbourne Cup Day with a win in the opening race when they combine with Mythical Dream in an 1800m contest. The son of Savabeel has been making up solid ground in the final 400m of his last two starts over 1400m, indicating that a rise in trip will suit him well. With William Pike getting back in the saddle after missing the last two runs, expect him to settle Mythical Dream midfield off the fence before letting rip with a blistering turn of foot at the top of the home straight. Best Bet Race 1 – #3 Mythical Dream (8) 4yo Gelding | T: Michael Grantham | J: William Pike (58kg) +160 with Neds Next Best at Ascot: Tactics Tactics produced a brave run in defeat first-up off 24-week spell, when the Neville Parnham-trained gelding was made to race four-wide over 1200m and was only beaten 3.1 lengths in fourth place. Even though the son of Rommel had a torrid run, dropping back in trip to 1000m looks ideal for this lightly raced galloper. With good speed expected in this contest, Brad Parnham will settle off the rail in the first four from barrier five. If Tactics can carry his big weight (60kg) and find a back to follow around the home turn, he will prove hard to hold out late. 16. What Melbourne Cup Race Day 2024 Where Fannie Bay Racecourse – Dick Ward Dr, Fannie Bay NT 0820 When Tuesday, November 5, 2024 First Race 1:54pm ACST Visit Dabble The Darwin Turf Club will host its annual Melbourne Cup meeting this Tuesday, with 46 horses accepting for the six-event program. Up to 25mm has fallen in the Top End since the meeting on October 26, with showers tipped on Sunday and Monday. Come Tuesday, the forecast is for mostly sunny conditions with a top temperature of 35C. BEST BET AT DARWIN: CHANGE IS COMING Recent form suggests Change Is Coming will be hard to beat in this five-horse field, and he did open as a $1.50 favourite with horse racing bookmakers. The five-year-old gelding saluted in July before coming sixth as the $1.90 favourite over 1100m in 0-66 grade on August 5. Gary Clarke’s runner led throughout to win in 0-64 class over 1100m in September, but he couldn’t hang on as the early pacemaker when second behind Mr Have A Chat over 1200m in 0-70 class on October 19. Best Bet Race 5 – #2 Change Is Coming (5) 5yo Gelding | T: Gary Clarke | J: Jarrod Todd (59kg) Bet with Bet365 NEXT BEST AT DARWIN: EXTREME EMOTION Extreme Emotion is one of the form horses in the Darwin and looked terrific when she led from start to finish over 1600m against 0-58 opposition on October 19. In her previous three starts over 1300m, the six-year-old mare finished strongly in the home straight for a win in 0-58 class and two close seconds at 0-58 and BM54 level. Getting to the front seemed to do the trick last start, and she is a genuine contender despite stepping up in grade. The track was rated as a Good 4 at the time of acceptances, and with warm, sunny conditions forecast, the surface is expected to remain in the Good range throughout Tuesday’s meeting. The rail will be pushed out to the +8m position for the entire circuit. Best Bet at Eagle Farm: Shako Following a narrow defeat at the Sunshine Coast, Shako will clash with Arisphere for the second time in as many starts; however, the Jack Bruce-trained gelding will have a 2.5kg weight swing in his favour. This son of Epaulette was a dominant winner first-up on September 8, when he stalked the speed before taking over to draw clear and win by 1.3 lengths. If Taylor Marshall can settle Shako in the one-one position from barrier five, they will find themselves in the winners’ circle post-race. Best Bet Race 4 – #5 Shako (5) 4yo Gelding | T: Jack Bruce | J: Taylor Marshall (56kg) +260 with Picklebet Next Best at Eagle Farm: Velozes After a quiet trial at this track on October 22, Velozes is set to return for her second racing preparation. The daughter of I Am Invincible settled on speed and proved way too good for her rivals in maiden class two starts back, and she was far from disgraced next time out in a quality event during the Queensland Racing Carnival. With a strong speed expected, Angela Jones will settle worse than midfield and find a back to follow around the home turn before asking for the ultimate effort. The Chris & Corey Munce-trained mare carried a big weight and took a run up the inside rail before switching off the leaders’ heels to run away with a stylish win. The daughter of Frosted will gain a similar run from barrier one in a slightly tougher race, but if she gets the breaks in the final 400m, Flic En Flac could prove to be a great each-way play with horse racing bookmakers. Leading all jockeys with 44 wins, it is Davis's third individual title on the NYRA circuit with a winter meet title at Aqueduct earlier this year and in 2022 under his belt. He has 177 NYRA-circuit wins in 2024 heading into Aqueduct's fall meet spanning Thursday, Nov.7 to Sunday, Dec. 29. “[Michael Migliore] is an incredible agent and he works hard at what he does, and we work together very well,” Davis said. “I also have to thank all the horses for running their 'A' game efforts every time as well as all the owners and trainers that give me these opportunities. I'm really happy to have won another title–it's a privilege and an honor and a validation of all the hard work of previous years in getting to this point today.” Kendrick Carmouche came in second with 34 wins and Manny Franco finished third with 27. Four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Chad Brown won his 33rd training title at a NYRA meet, his 13th consecutive Belmont fall title, as he led all trainers with 31 wins. Linda Rice finished second with 18 while Christophe Clement and Brad Cox tied for third with 13 wins. Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables secured 11 wins to claim their 29th owners' title, with Michael Dubb finishing second with eight, and Sanford J. Goldfarb's seven wins bringing him home in third. Live racing resumes Thursday at Aqueduct Racetrack for the opening day card of the fall meet which offers 26 stakes races, nine of them graded, with purses worth a total of $5.33-million. 25. GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner 'TDN Rising Star' Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) has come out of the marquee race in good order, according to Chad Brown, and will return to Kentucky Monday morning. “Everything's all good,” said assistant trainer Baldo Hernandez Sunday morning after showing the horse to the media. “He will ship tomorrow to Kentucky and maybe Florida after that. I don't know for sure, it's up to the boss.” The connections are expected to announce future plans for the colt soon. Sean Flanagan of Flanagan Racing confirmed that 'TDN Rising Star' MGISW Chancer McPatrick (McKinzie) will return to Florida for the winter with the long-term goal of pointing toward the GI Kentucky Derby. He finished sixth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. “We'll bring him down to Payson Park and sometime in January get him back going on the Derby trail.” In the Todd Pletcher camp, 'TDN Rising Star' MGISW Fierceness (City of Light) came out of his runner-up effort in the Classic well and the expectation is that he will continue his career in 2025. “He came out of the race very well,” Pletcher said. “Looks good this morning. He's going to go to Kentucky tomorrow and is going to get a complete physical. Currently, the plan would be for him to go on to Palm Beach Downs from there and prepare for a 4-year-old campaign.” Pletcher couldn't point to a specific next start for Fierceness but did say the big-money early season contests for older horses at Gulfstream Park–namely the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational–will be considered. “It's a little premature to say exactly what we're going to point for,” he said. “We'll see how the physical goes. Then the Pegasus is in play, the Saudi Cup is in play, the Dubai World Cup is in play. A lot of options. And he's had a pretty steady campaign. Hasn't been out of training. Ran in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last year and Breeders' Cup this year. It's premature to firm up an exact race schedule, but lot of possibilities.” After rallying to sixth, 'TDN Rising Star' GISW Tapit Trice (Tapit) has also returned in good shape. Pletcher was impressed with the effort, and said the plan was for the horse to go to Kentucky while the ownership group made a decision on if he would be retired to stud or return for 2025. A stable representative from third-place finisher Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn})'s camp confirmed their multiple group winning star had emerged well and that they would like to return next year. Bill Mott contends that GISW Arthur's Ride (Tapit) had landed a tough situation in the Classic when the Japanese contender, 2023 GI Breeders' Cup Classic runner-up Derma Sotogake (Jpn), (Mind Your Biscuits) blazed through early splits of :22.43, :44.96, and six furlongs in 1:09.44. “It wasn't the scenario we visualized,” Mott said. “He [jockey Junior Alvarado] was forced to make a decision by the time he got down to the wire the first time. He either had to follow, track [Derma Sotogake] around the turn or gun him and try to go by. And, as you know, they went pretty fast.” Trainer Chief Stipe Cowns was disappointed in the last-place performance, but not in MGSW Next (Not This Time), who will return to his marathon dirt races for 2025. “He'll be back next year,” Cowans said. “We'll see him in the Issac Murphy at Churchill Downs during Derby week.” The Distaff MGISW Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) was on the red-eye flight out of California and back to Magdalena Farm in Lexington Sunday morning, where the 'TDN Rising Star' will get an extended layoff after capping her championship season with a 2 1/2-length win in the Distaff. Trainer Kenny McPeek reports she's come out in great shape. She will be given a 'huge' stall on the farm, likely have her hind shoes off for a bit, and have access to the many amenities the farm provides for her vacation. McPeek included that there is no timetable for when she might return to training and no schedule mapped out for 2025. While Thorpedo Anna will almost certainly be the Eclipse Award winner for the 3-year-old filly category, there is a strong nod to Horse of the Year consideration as well. “I am just really proud of her,” McPeek said. “There were certainly high expectations, and she came through. It has been a fantastic year, and we are just looking forward to getting home.” Third-place finisher GISW Candied (Candy Ride {Arg}) is reportedly in fine condition after the race, and there are plans for a 2025 campaign for her as well after a freshening. When asked how his Distaff-fourth came out of the race, Alice Verite (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn})'s trainer Kazuya Nakatake reponded, “She is good. We are tired in a good way!” The Turf The globetrotting Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) became the first horse to win the Turf in non-consecutive years Saturday, and has been given a sterling account for himself since then. “He pulled up well this morning, ate up and the whole team ships out [Sunday] afternoon,” confirmed trainer Charlie Appleby's head traveling assistant, Chris Connett. Godolphin representatives reported that the seven-time Group/Grade I winner will point toward the G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic Apr. 5 in 2025, which he won this year as well, and a potential start in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase in the interim is thus far undecided. Reports from the Japanese contingent state that trainer Hiroyasu Tanaka was pleased with runner-up Rousham Park (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB})'s effort and that he's come out well. A stable representative confirmed a similar prognosis for third-place finisher Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), just that he was 'unlucky at the final bends'. Straight No Chaser with John Velazquez | Horsephotos The Sprint MyRacehorse's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint champion Straight No Chaser (Speightster) returned to Santa Anita Sunday with no immediate plans set for him. “I'm not sure what's next for him but I am enjoying this one,” said trainer Dan Blacker, who won his first Breeders' Cup race. The winner's share of the purse boosted jockey John Velazquez's total to $39,330,275 to surpass Mike Smith as the leading all-time earner at the Breeders' Cup. The Dirt Mile GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile victor Full Serrano (Arg) (Full Mast) has come out of his effort Saturday in fine form after pulling the 13-1 upset as the nightcap to a big Saturday of championship racing. “Beautiful. He ate up and looks great,” said owner Kosta Hronis. “Dappled and shiny,” Stephanie Hronis added. “Doesn't look exhausted.” John Sadler provided a good prognosis for his star and announced the most immediate plan was to ship the horse back up to Santa Anita Sunday morning. As for 2025 plans, Hronis says those are up to Sadler. “We'll get him up to Santa Anita,” said Sadler. “He leaves this morning. We'll check him out up there over the next week or so then we'll start to map out some plans.” A possible next stop could be the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational in January, something on the stakes schedule at Santa Anita or a venture to the Middle East. The Filly & Mare Sprint GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Soul of An Angel (Atreides) is headed back to Florida Tuesday, and could have a trip to the Saudi Cup in her future should all go well. “She will probably run once [in Florida],” said trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., who won his first Breeders' Cup event in the race. “I think all being well, she'll probably try and go to the Saudi Cup. There's no two ways about it–she's a one-turn horse. At two turns, her stamina is tested, whereas one turn she has plenty of stamina.” The Mile Victory Racing Partners' GI Breeders' Cup Mile victor More Than Looks (More Than Ready) returns to Kentucky Monday, where the team will evaluate further plans. The Mile was trainer Cherie DeVaux's first at the World Championships, making her the ninth female trainer to do so, and it was More Than Looks's first Grade I-victory. “He came back really well,” assistant trainer Enrique Miranda said. “He doesn't even look very tired. Everyone is really excited and everything is in good order.” Runner-up GISW Johannes (Nyquist) is expected to race into 2025, according to trainer Tim Yakteen, though how they'll proceed is still undecided. “He came out of his race in excellent shape,” Yakteen said. “Our thoughts on our next race, and how we move forward off this race, is that we still haven't completely digested everything, and we'll take a week or so and figure it out.” “He ran absolutely super. We're very, very proud of our horse.” Moira with Flavien Prat after her win | Horsephotos The Filly & Mare Turf Canadian Horse of the Year, and newly crowned Breeders' Cup champion, multiple Grade I-placed Moira (Ghostzapper) was on a plane Sunday heading for Lexington, where she is slated to pass through the ring at the Fasig-Tipton 'Night of the Stars' Monday. Stablemate GISW Full Count Felicia (War Front), who finished seventh, will also be sold. “They both came out really well and ate up the feed tub last night,” trainer Kevin Attard said. “They both look well. Chances are they're moving on to their next career, or maybe they'll head to a different stable.” Moira notched the elusive Grade I-victory which haunted her career–she'd been second or third five times at the elite level–and Attard claimed his first win at the World Championships to boot. “It was so nice to see, especially it probably being her last race, for her to culminate it all at the World Championship race like that. It just doesn't get any better.” Undercard Performers No worse for wear, too, was MSW Show Card (Into Mischief), who flipped in the paddock prior to the GIII Bayakoa Stakes Saturday on the undercard, and had to be scratched. “She was on her toes and she went up and lost her footing and she laid down on the shavings.,” said trainer Bob Baffert. “Once she sat down, that was it.” The post Breeders’ Cup Follow-Ups: Sierra Leone Well, Future Plans TBA appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
