  1. Making an instant impact in Thursday's Arqana Series Des Poulains at Deauville, Peter Maher, Carl Fitzgerald and John Baxter's Maranoa Charlie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Koubalibre {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) became his sire's ninth TDN Rising Star. Out of a half-sister to the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Tiggy Wiggy (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the €220,000 Arqana Deauville August graduate soon had control on the front end under Aurelien Lemaitre. Sent into the clear passing the furlong pole, the Christopher Head-trained 23-10 favourite registered an impressive 3 1/2-length success from Mighty Boy (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}). He joins the sire's burgeoning TDN Rising Star haul which includes the top-level performers Unquestionable (Fr) and River Tiber (Ire). 2. All the rage beforehand, Mojave River (Fr) (Mohaather {GB}–Quintessenz {Ger}, by Soldier Hollow {GB}) fared best of the debutantes contesting Thursday's valuable Arqana Series Des Pouliches at Deauville. Sent to the fore from the outset by Maxime Guyon, the Joseph O'Brien-trained 28-10 favourite asserted her superiority in the final furlong to score by two lengths from Bogota (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Mojave River, who qualified for this incentive by selling for €17,000 at the 2022 Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale, becomes the ninth winner for her first-season sire. 3. What P.B. Lawrence Stakes Day 2024 Where Caulfield Racecourse – Gate 2, Station St, Caulfield East VIC 3145 When Saturday, August 17, 2024 First Race 12:25pm AEST Visit Dabble Feature racing heads to Caulfield on Saturday afternoon as the build-up to the Melbourne Spring Carnival really ramps up. The Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) headlines proceedings, with the Vain Stakes (1100m) and Quezette Stakes (1100m) amongst the features on the nine-race program. Brief showers are forecast, but they should not affect the Good 4 rating too much, while the rail comes out 9m the entire circuit. The action at Caulfield is set to commence at 12:25pm AEST. P.B. Lawrence Stakes Tip: Pinstriped After finishing third in this race 12 months ago, Enver Jusufovic’s Pinstriped returns on the back of some hot trial form. While the six-year-old was well beaten in the All-Star Mile (1600m) in his lone run during the autumn, he is dynamic first-up (6: 2-2-0) and brings an element of class to this field. Drawn in barrier five, Ben Allen will have him near the speed throughout, and with a swift turn of foot, Pinstriped should prove too sharp fresh in the 2024 P.B. Lawrence Stakes. P.B. Lawrence Stakes Race 8 – #6 Pinstriped (5) 6yo Gelding | T: Enver Jusufovic | J: Ben Allen (59kg) +900 with Picklebet Vain Stakes Tip: Blue Stratum Despite winning by a nostril over the Moonee Valley 1000m on August 10, Blue Stratum looked to have the race well within his grasp in the final 100m and perhaps just switched off late. He steps up to 1100m for the first time, but from barrier five under Beau Mertens, he should have no issue stalking the speed before skipping clear of his rivals to take out the 2024 Vain Stakes. Vain Stakes Race 5 – #1 Blue Stratum (5) 3yo Colt | T: Tony & Calvin McEvoy | J: Beau Mertens (56kg) +340 with Unibet Quezette Stakes Tip: Kuroyanagi Kuroyangi did all but win the Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) first-up at Morphettville. Having placed in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m), she is somewhat of a Caulfield specialist. Jamie Kah will likely stalk the speed from the one-one position, and if Kuroyanagi is anywhere near her best, she should prove too good in the 2024 Quezette Stakes. Quezette Stakes Race 6 – #5 Kuroyanagi (6) 3yo Filly | T: Will Clarken & Niki O’Shea | J: Jamie Kah (56kg) +190 with Dabble Best Bet at Caulfield: Lovazou Lovazou has strung together two impressive victories to begin this campaign. The now four-year-old mare has produced strong finishes on rain-affected tracks, and coming back to firmer ground with confidence on her side can only be a positive. Carleen Hefel will have the Zoustar mare in the second half of the field upon settling, but with a strong finish, Lovazou can keep her picket fence going. Best Bet Race 3 – #6 Lovazou (4) 4yo Mare | T: Danny O’Brien | J: Carleen Hefel (58kg) +400 with Bet365 Next Best at Caulfield: Devoted Former WA galloper Devoted produced an eye-catching run first-up at Flemington on August 3 when narrowly defeated by Gentleman Roy — the market fancy in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes. The seven-year-old gelding was forced to travel wide with no cover but only went down by a head. With two wins second-up already in his career, Devoted looks well placed to build on that record. Next Best Race 2 – #3 Devoted (8) 6yo Gelding | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Daniel Stackhouse (55kg) +400 with Neds Best Value at Caulfield: Vagrant Caulfield specialist Vagrant is set to return in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) fresh off a 25-week spell. The five-year-old mare claimed Group 3 success at this course and trip during the autumn, and the ability to roll forward from a wide barrier puts her right in this. Beau Mertens will need a touch of luck to slot in from barrier eight, but if the pair can find cover, the $16 with online bookies may prove to be the wrong price after all. 4. Melbourne’s weather gods might have a strong hand to play if winning machine Rhapsody Chic (NZ) (Sacred Falls) is to extend his winning run to five straight at Caulfield on Saturday. Anthony and Sam Freedman’s galloper has won his past four starts and another victory would put him in select company. “I think Steel Prince might have been the last horse we’ve won five in a row with, it’s never easy,” Sam Freedman recalled. “The funny thing is he is a horse who requires luck too, because he is not great out of the gates.” Jamie Kah will get her first sit aboard the son of Sacred Falls, who is undefeated in all four runs back this campaign, banking $196,350 along the way, with all his wins coming on Soft or Heavy ground. Kah will be the horse’s fifth jockey this preparation. Caulfield is currently rated a Good 4 but could receive as much as 14mm of rainfall across the weekend. “That’s probably why we are there as we are hopeful of getting some rain Friday and hopefully a little bit more Saturday, which would bring him right into calculations,” Freedman admitted. “Obviously he has been most effective on ground with give but I wouldn’t rule out he isn’t going to be effective on top of the ground in time. “We are obviously playing to his strengths for now.” Another successful New Zealand purchase from Roll the Dice Racing joining the likes of Ayrton (NZ) (Iffraaj), Globe (NZ) (Charm Spirit) and Otago (NZ) (Ocean Park), Rhapsody Chic won his first and only start in New Zealand on Heavy 10 ground for his previous owners. A winner of five of his nine starts overall, the five-year-old has never missed a place, with Saturday’s $2.60 chance with Sportsbet on trial at 1600 metres for the first time. Despite the end of winter nearing, Freedman said the horse won’t necessarily be sent to the paddock, however. “It is his first time at the mile, but he has earned his chance at this trip so it’s a good chance to see if he wants 1400 metres or a mile,” he said. “I’m not sure if he’ll have a break or not after this, he looks terrific and is not giving us any signs at home he has had enough.” View the full article
  5. Champion mare Imperatriz will be mated with emerging young sire Pierata this spring, Yulong has confirmed. In May, the breeding and racing giant won the battle to secure the world’s highest-rated sprinting mare at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale for a Southern Hemisphere record of $6.6 million. The daughter of I Am Invincible won 10 Group 1 races and almost $7 million in prizemoney during a glittering career on the racetrack. Several of Yulong’s resident sires were under consideration to be the first to cover the mare but Pierata, a G1-winning son of Pierro, was chosen off the back of a brilliant season with his first-crop two-year-olds, including multiple Stakes winner and G1 performer Coleman. Pierata served a career-high 191 mares last season and will stand for $66,000 in 2024. View the full article
  6. A special milestone is beckoning for New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock and he hopes a strong team of representatives can deliver his 1000th domestic winner at his home track on Saturday. Sharrock has been training since the late eighties and has continued to be a consistent, successful presence in the domestic scene, with his most recent of 18 Group One wins coming in the Livamol Classic (2050m) with Ladies Man last season. Ladies Man will not appear at the Taranaki meeting, but another high-performing member of the stable in Justaskme has been engaged in the Makita 1800 after finishing fourth in the Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m) earlier this month. “He was desperately unlucky (in the Winter Cup), I think if he had kept going straight ahead he would’ve got the gap we needed instead of crossing heels but probably fought the finish out,” Sharrock said. “I thought he was super.” Carrying top-weight has become customary in recent seasons for Justaskme, and the race will be no different with his 62kg impost decreased by four-kilogram claiming apprentice Rihaan Goyaram. “Some of these horses are going to carry about 50kg so he’s giving them eight kilos, it’s just the same old story with him. He’s been a great horse but he’s coming to the end because he’s hard to place.” Earlier on the card, an exciting campaign for Islington Lass will get underway in the New Plymouth Building Supplies 1400, after the classy mare capped off her last preparation winning the Listed Rangitikei Cup (1600m) in May. “She’s coming up super, but through the weather, we haven’t been able to give her a jump out,” Sharrock said. “She’s probably going one or two runs short into her first race, but her main goal is the Livamol so I’m working back from that. “She’s got to have a run on Saturday, and I think she’ll derive quite a bit of benefit out of the race.” Also featuring in the open sprint contest is Street Gossip, a standout winner at her first New Zealand start who carries just 50 kilograms under Goyaram. “She’s a Listed winner in Australia and she showed that at Hawera,” Sharrock said. “She drops nine kilos on that run, albeit into an open, but at that weight she should be hard to beat. She’s glided through her first up run and I’m pretty positive with her going into Saturday.” Backing up from a comfortable maiden success last Sunday at Woodville, Tisse will line-up in the United Steel 1800 with a senior rider on board in Johnathan Parkes. “I always intended to back-up for $35,000 and he hasn’t left an oat this week,” Sharrock said. “Triston (Moodley, apprentice jockey) has gone north to ride at Ruakaka so I’ve replaced him with J Parkes, who I personally think this horse needs. He was floating all over the track on Sunday, so J Parkes will take that out of him and I think they will be a good combination.” Sharrock will have a pair of runners contesting the Winstone Wallboards 1200 in Brazenbelle and Bella Timing, with the former reverting back to turf from an attempt on the Awapuni Synthetic. “She’s been racing well, I threw the rope out a bit to have a go at the poly and it didn’t suit her,” Sharrock said. “She likes off ground, so she’ll be competitive, but I would put Bella Timing slightly ahead of her in that race.” Fellow four-year-old mare Bella Timing has won one race and placed in a further three from seven starts, with her most recent effort a second behind speedy type Farravallo at Otaki. “It was a super run, that horse has beaten her twice fair and square, but I think he’s quite a good horse,” Sharrock said. “In this race with four kilos off, I think she can be very competitive, so she looks a strong chance.” A daughter of Time Test, Bella Timing is the seventh foal to race out of broodmare Bellaroof, who has produced several of Sharrock’s former stars including Tavi Mac and Darci La Bella. “They all just have an ability to gallop and gameness in racing attitude,” Sharrock said. “I’ve got another sister by Contributer, she’s a three-year-old and won a jump-out as a two-year-old. “They just continue to run, I’d love mares like that to come along more often. They just leave winner after winner. “We have got a share in Darci La Bella who is in foal to Super Seth, she was a Group Two winner and a lovely mare. “The old girl (Bellaroof) is now 24 or 25 and is in foal to Sword Of State, that will be her last foal and she’ll retire to Seaton Park as a nanny. She has been a prolific producer for us, just unreal.” Other well-related members of Sharrock’s stable are Indian Gold and I Don’t, who will aim to make their presence felt in the James Hardie 1600. “Indian Gold won very impressively first-up and did nothing wrong second-up, but he was a little bit common when running fourth at Hawera,” Sharrock said. “I’ve implicated blinkers and he’s working really well in them, so it may assist with his concentration. “He’s a tidy horse and I’m pleased to have one for Peter Grieve (breeder-owner). “I Do went super last start, she was probably on three legs two days before with a foot abscess so she’s done well to run second. “She’s not feeling that at this stage, we’ve kept her off the sand and on the grass and she’s going to be competitive in a race like that as well.” In the final race of the day, the Paslode 1600, Outer Focus and Swingit Our Way will round out the stable runners, with the former having reason for an uncharacteristic seventh at Te Rapa last start. “Outer Focus tore off a plate half an hour before the race and stood on a toe clip, after the race we found it had affected him,” Sharrock said. “He carried that and we’ve got on top of it, so he’ll be competitive in the last. “Swingit Our Way loves bad ground and went super first-up, so it’s hard to split those two.” Sharrock has claimed 239 of his 999 victories at the New Plymouth venue, making the elusive figure a fitting target on a course where it all began. “999, the last one is always the hardest to get but it looks like we’ve got a really nice team on Saturday,” he said. 7. Cambridge trainer Maxim van Lierde dreamed of campaigning a horse in Melbourne when he spent time at Lindsay Park last year, and now that has turned into a reality. “Last year I took a horse called Henry Robin over to Lindsay Park and I spent over two weeks with them,” van Lierde said. “I got on quite well with Will (Hayes, co-trainer) especially because I did quite a lot of track work with him. We have become good friends over the last year and the knowledge that they have got is second to none. He is very giving with his advice and knowledge, which has helped us immensely.” With victory at Ellerslie on Derby Day in March and a fifth placing in the Gr.3 Cuddle Stakes (1400m at Trentham a fortnight later, Gentian Blue (NZ) (Reliable Man) identified herself as a possible candidate to campaign in Melbourne, and that fate was sealed with a pleasing first-up placing over 1400m at Ruakaka in June. The six-year-old mare travelled to Melbourne earlier this month where she beat just the one runner home in her Australian debut over 1620m at Flemington, but van Lierde said she can be forgiven for that run. “It didn’t look very good to the eye but she was five weeks between runs and she had a bit of a virus when she got there,” van Lierde said. “We were on the back foot a little bit, but she has come on immensely from the run.” Van Lierde’s wife, Samantha, is currently across the Tasman with their two-win mare, who is set to line-up at Caulfield on Saturday in the Vale Catherine Rae (1400m) where she will jump from barrier six with good friend Daniel Stackhouse aboard. “Dan Stackhouse is a good friend of my wife, Sam, they grew up riding ponies together. It is a bit of a full-circle moment having him ride a horse for us,” van Lierde said. “We probably rode her a little outside her comfort zone last start with the hot speed in the race, so we are just going to let her find her feet and hit the line. We are back in trip with the blinkers on, so we are expecting a much better performance.” Initially set to be a two-run campaign, van Lierde said they may extend that on the advice of their Australian host. “The initial plan was to head home after this run, but talking with Will he said the time we had with the virus, she is essentially only second-up on Saturday, so he thinks she will peak third-up over there,” van Lierde said. “We might as well look at one more run, but we will just see how she comes through Saturday.” Van Lierde said they have enjoyed their Australian experience and he is hoping they can find another horse that is capable of testing their talent in the competitive racing jurisdiction. “If we have got a horse that measures up, we will go over there and chase some prizemoney,” he said. 8. What Ballarat Races Where Ballarat Turf Club – 240 Kennedys Rd, Miners Rest VIC 3352 When Friday, August 16, 2024 First Race 1pm AEST Visit Dabble The synthetic surface at Ballarat will play host to an eight-race program on Friday afternoon. A poor day on the weather front awaits, which means it may be advantageous to be close to the speed to avoid kickback through the ruck, but as always, each runner should get their chance if good enough. Racing at Ballarat is scheduled to commence at 1pm AEST. Best Bet at Ballarat: Lady Avenger Archie Alexander’s Lady Avenger caught the eye when flashing home first-up from a long spell at the Ballarat synthetic 1400m. The Smart Missile mare gave her rivals a big start and finished strongly to go down by a head, suggesting a maiden victory will not be far away. Ben Allen will likely have Lady Avenger settled towards the rear of the field, but with a similar finish, she should have no issue overhauling her rivals this time around. Best Bet Race 6 – #7 Lady Avenger (10) 5yo Mare | T: Archie Alexander | J: Ben Allen (57.5kg) Bet with Bet365 Next Best at Ballarat: Orlabent Having struggled on a heavy deck at Sandown last time out, the Melody Cunningham-trained Orlabent presents as a great bet as he returns to the Ballarat synthetic 1000m. The son of Hellbent won on stable debut at this course and distance three runs back, stalking the speed and disposing of his rivals with relative ease. From barrier one, Ryan Houston will likely gain a similar run in transit as Orlabent did that day, and with even luck at the right time, he should be winning again. Next Best Race 3 – #2 Orlabent (1) 5yo Gelding | T: Melody Cunningham | J: Ryan Houston (a1.5) (62.5kg) Bet with Picklebet Next Best Again at Ballarat: Chicago King Not much went right for Chicago King on debut over the 1100m on this surface on August 2. He was forced to travel four wide without cover towards the rear of the field, yet even after Beau Mertens lost his whip with 200m to go, the three-year-old gelding was only beaten by 1.6 lengths. 9. What Belmont Races Where Belmont Racecourse – Saintly Entrance, Burswood WA 6100 When Saturday, August 17, 2024 First Race 11:24am AWST Visit Dabble Belmont Park will host a competitive nine-race meeting this Saturday afternoon, with the opening race scheduled to jump at 11:24am AEST. After being rated as a Soft 6 on Thursday, the track is expected to worsen throughout the day, with heavy rain forecast to fall on raceday. The rail will be pushed out to the +10m position for the entire circuit, which should allow the track to play favourably for on-speed runners. Best Bet at Belmont: Captain Pluto Captain Pluto kicked off his second racing preparation in Western Australia with a dominant 3.5-length victory at this track and trip on August 3. The Grant & Alana Williams-trained galloper ran home from the back of the field, took over with 150m to go, and booted clear to win in fine style. From a better barrier (3) on Saturday, Captain Pluto can record back-to-back wins with a similar performance. Best Bet Race 3 – #3 Captain Pluto (3) 5yo Gelding | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: Clint Johnston-Porter (57kg) +160 with Picklebet Next Best at Belmont: Sofia’s Symphony Michael Lane tested Sofia’s Symphony in the Listed Beaufine Stakes first-up, but she was unfortunately caught up in a pack of runners after a horse fell in front of her. Although this daughter of Smart Missile ran into some bad luck, she still battled on and finished third, beaten 2.4 lengths by Puli. With the benefit of one run under her belt and drawing barrier one, William Pike can settle Sofia’s Symphony in the box seat and receive the run of the race. Next Best Race 2 – #3 Sofia’s Symphony (1) 5yo Gelding | T: Michael Lane | J: William Pike (57.5kg) +400 with Neds Best Value at Belmont: Just Famous Just Famous broke his maiden impressively at Northam over 1100m first-up, as the Donna Riordan-trained galloper kicked off the preparation in fine style on a Heavy track. The son of Justify as raced on two Heavy tracks this time in, and will be at peak fitness for this contest, coming off an unlucky third-place finish at Pinjarra. Steven Parnham will be legged aboard for his first ride on this gelding, and if Just Famous can hold his spot behind the speed from barrier one, he will get every chance to win again. 10. Wonder Boy after winning at Flemington.(Photo by Reg Ryan/Racing Photos) Wonder Boy returns after a 70-day spell in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon, with the Jerome Hunter barn setting their sights on the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) later in the spring. Speaking with Racing.com, Hunter confirmed the likely path for the undefeated son of Cosmic Force, using Saturday’s feature as launching pad for some of the key three-year-old features throughout the spring carnival. “He pretty much showed what we thought he had (on debut),” said Hunter. “Decided to give him a spell after that, a quick freshen up aiming for the spring carnival. “I think it might be a bit too sharp for him (1100m) on Saturday but it’s not the grand final, we’re going to give him a Guineas path, so I think what he showed through the line at Flemington the horse you’d say 1400m to a mile would be perfect.” “He’ll run on Saturday, then two weeks later he’ll go to 1200m, and then we’ll find probably a Guineas Prelude or something to step him up (in trip) and hopefully he’s there on grand final.” Wonder Boy is currently the second favourite at $4.00 with online bookmakers for the Group 3 Vain Stakes on Saturday. Meanwhile, $51.00 is available in futures markets for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on October 12. Horse racing news View the full article
  11. What Rosehill Races Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142 When Saturday, August 17, 2024 First Race 11:35am AEST Visit Dabble Feature racing returns to Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday afternoon, with the Listed Rosebud (1100m) headlining a bumper 10-part program. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit for the meeting, and with consistent rainfall predicted leading into the weekend, punters can expect the Soft 7 rating at the time of acceptances to hold true for race day. All the action is scheduled to get underway at 11:35am local time. The Rosebud Top Tip: Brave One Brave One secured an impressive debut victory at Randwick on July 6 and appears perfectly placed to claim back-to-back wins. The son of Exceedance relished the heavy track conditions on that occasion, sitting outside the leader before bolting clear with the prize. The second horse has already franked the form line, and with Brave One going on to match motors with Gatsby’s in a recent jump-out at this course on August 6, the $6.00 available with online bookmakers appears too big. The Rosebud Race 6 – #8 Brave One (1) 3yo Colt | T: Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes | J: Jay Ford (53kg) +500 with Picklebet Best Bet at Rosehill: Dawn Service Dawn Service demolished his rivals at Hawkesbury on August 1 and displayed above-average ability to score by four lengths. The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained colt justified the short quote as he made every post a winner, proving far too classy for provincial company. Gate two should allow Tim Clark to adopt similar tactics, and although this BM72 possesses more depth than his maiden romp, Dawn Service appears on song to secure back-to-back wins as he targets even tougher assignments in the spring. Best Bet Race 1 – #5 Dawn Service (2) 3yo Colt | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Tim Clark (55.5kg) +170 with Dabble Next Best at Rosehill: Tom Kitten Tom Kitten returns after a 133-day spell and appears switched on heading into this first-up assignment. The James Cummings-trained four-year-old underwent a gelding operation during his time in the paddock before catching the eye in a recent barrier trial at Rosehill on August 8. It was a smart piece of work by the son of Harry Angel, and although the 1400m may prove short of his best trip, the booking of James McDonald suggests Tom Kitten is ready to strike for Godolphin. Next Best Race 8 – #6 Tom Kitten (1) 4yo Gelding | T: James Cummings | J: James McDonald (58kg) +290 with Bet365 Best Value at Rosehill: Lord Of Biscay Lord Of Biscay was luckless on Australian debut at Rosehill on July 20 and should’ve finished much closer than the 4.3-length margin may suggest. The European import was held up with nowhere to go at a crucial stage first-up, closing impressively when finally getting clear with 200m left to travel. His form overseas suggests the 1400m second-up should be an ideal setup to produce his best, and with barrier one to help Dylan Gibbons gain an economical run throughout the journey, Lord Of Biscay looks a terrific each-way play in the Rosehill finale. 12. What Doomben Races Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007 When Saturday, August 17, 2024 First Race 12:18pm AEST Visit Dabble Brisbane Racing Club will host a very competitive nine-race program at Doomben this Saturday afternoon, with racing set to kick off at 12:18pm AEST. Due to heavy rainfall in the Brisbane area, it is expected that the surface will remain in the Heavy range for the day after being rated as a Heavy 10 at the time of acceptances. The rail will move back into its true position for the entire circuit. Best Bet at Doomben: Thesecondatportsea Thesecondatportsea will back up after racing at the Sunshine Coast seven days ago, when the Jack Bruce-trained mare ran home strongly to finish fourth over 1600m. This daughter of Churchill took inside runs, and even though she was in the worst part of the track, she still recorded the best final 600m section of the race. Taylor Marshall will be legged aboard with a light weight (52.5kg), and if Thesecondatportsea can replicate her finish from last start, she can breakthrough for a win here. Best Bet Race 8 – #14 Thesecondatportsea (6) 5yo Mare | T: Jack Bruce | J: Taylor Marshall (52.5kg) +340 with PlayUp Next Best at Doomben: Hardware Lane Following two solid runner-up finishes at the Sunshine Coast and this track in his last two, Hardware Lane will rise to 1100m and strike a favourable Heavy track on Saturday. The John Smerdon-trained galloper finished second behind Vodka Martini on a Good track and looked as though he needed a softer track to produce his best effort. A strong tempo is expected to be set by several on-speed runners, which will allow Noel Callow to settle Hardward Lane midfield off the fence and be saved up for a big finish. The son of Spirit Of Boom smashed through the line over 2000m, indicating that the extra 200m here will suit. This guy has a strong record on Heavy tracks (8:4-1-0), and when you combine that with the light weight, thanks to Cody Collis’ 3kg claim, Sherriff Cody can give a good showing at double figure odds with online bookmakers. 13. Ben Allen returns to the mounting yard aboard Pinstriped after winning the 2023 Feehan Stakes. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Cranbourne-based trainer Enver Jusufovic is optimistic that Pinstriped can improve on last year’s performance in the PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) this Saturday. The six-year-old gelding finished second in the race 12 months ago behind weight-for-age star Mr Brightside and has completed three jump-outs in preparation for his return to the track. “It’s a Group 2, I know it’s a long spring, but you certainly have them fit enough to be very hard to beat,” Jusufovic told Racing.com. “I weighed him the other day, he’s 597 kilograms, which is great for him. “He’s a six-year-old now and he’s matured and really filled out. It’s been almost a faultless prep, with a foot abscess, that’s about it, other than that, he’s coping really well and he’s nice and forward for a first-up tilt. “He’ll improve on what he does, but he ran second in this race last year, and I’m of the opinion he’s a lot stronger this time in.” Horse racing news View the full article
  14. Spring contender Francesco Guardi. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Chris Waller is eager to see the return of Francesco Guardi and Hinged as the two line up in an open handicap over 1400 metres at Rosehill this weekend, aiming to make their mark early in the campaign. Francesco Guardi, who has been off the track for ten months and has failed to recapture his best since his impressive victory in the 2022 Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m), is on a mission to recapture his best form. Now a seven-year-old, he recently finished third behind Saturday’s rival Tom Kitten in a trial and is nominated for both the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m). Hinged is also returning for another campaign after connections decided against retiring her to the broodmare barn, hoping she can secure another Group 1 victory. “We thought about it, but no, we’re happy to push on at this stage,” explained Waller. “She has run in the top four in Group 1 races about eight times. She’s a bit older now, but she’s not far off them.” Horse racing news View the full article
  15. Ndola ridden by Luke Currie winning at Sandown. (Photo by Pat Scala/Racing Photos) Trained by Lindsay Park, Ndola, a promising Justify colt, appears destined for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) following his convincing victory at Sandown-Lakeside. After an impressive debut win at Pakenham Synthetic in June, he placed second in a 1200-metre handicap at Caulfield last month. In his latest outing, Ndola dominated the field in the Sandown-Lakeside Benchmark 64 (1200m), triumphing by 2.3 lengths over Pieris, with Bossy Benita finishing third. Ben Hayes, speaking on behalf of the training team, including brothers JD and Will, expressed his satisfaction with Ndola’s performance. “I was very impressed. I thought Luke (Currie, jockey) did a good thing, just letting him get balanced and get into a rhythm, then he was wide around the bend and his final 100 metres was very impressive as he was running right away from them,” Ben Hayes told Racing.com post-race. “He’s a horse we believe will be much better out to 1400 metres and a mile and we think he is very, very good.” “There are plenty of three-year-old options and in two and a half weeks we’ll look at the Exford Plate which would be a good step up to 1400 metres, but he would now be our number one seed for the Caulfield Guineas, so exciting times ahead.” Following the win, Ndola is a +1700 winning hope with horse racing bookmakers for the Caulfield Guineas. 16. All roads lead to Katherine on Saturday with 64 horses accepting for the eight-race meeting where $184,000 in prizemoney will be up for grabs. The feature race is the $30,000 Katherine Cup (1700m) at the Jim Jackson Racecourse with seven of the eight runners backing up from Darwin Cup Day on August 5. Phil Cole’s Saccharo (fourth), Chris Nash’s Son Of Bielski (fifth) and Gary Clarke’s Playoffs (sixth) finished behind Peter Robl’s Hadouken in the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2050m). Chris Pollard’s Hamlet Von Snitzel (first), Clarke’s Pink Panther (second), Kerry Petrick’s Venting (fourth) and Neil Dyer’s Ziggi Rocks (fifth) contested an open 1600m handicap. Yannick Valenti’s Mexi Cola from WA, who has had three starts in Alice Springs for two thirds, completes the field and will start as the rank outsider. “It’s record acceptors for the annual Katherine meeting, the previous best was 63 back in 2018,” Thoroughbred Racing NT chief executive officer Andrew O’Toole said. “There’s never been a better Katherine Cup field, but in general it’s a super meeting. “It’s normally a six-race meeting, but you’ve got good support from Darwin trainers and Alice Springs trainers heading home. “Neil Dyer will be there once again on his way back to Victoria. “There’s an average of eight runners a race, there’s only one race with two dividends – all the rest are three. “We’re delighted with the fields and there’s 11 jockeys, it should be a great day.” Katherine Turf Club president Paul Mullins and his hard-working committee are ecstatic that their big day will accommodate eight races. Last year, 43 horses featured on the seven-event program. “It’s awesome to see and it’s something that we will embrace immensely, it’s definitely a good problem to have,” Mullins said. “There’s a lot of highly-rated horses with quality coming down. “Trainers have been able to give their horses a 12-day rest after the Darwin Cup. “Kununurra and Broome are kicking in the next fortnight, so they’re passing through and there’s money available. “It’s good to see that they’re looking after the Territory first.” Two years ago, the KTC re-surfaced the sand track, and it was deemed too loose and soft, but it certainly received the stamp of approval last year. However, the KTC has dealt with another issue in the build-up to Cup Day. Damage was caused to sections of the running rail, with Council doing burn-offs inside the track. “We managed to get some new running rail up from Melbourne, and we’ve repaired that,” Mullins said. “The boys have done well; they’ve pulled together again as they do. “Greatest bunch of volunteers in the world, I reckon. “The track is fine – we’ve rotovated and rolled it and prepped it last weekend. “Heavily watered and put to sleep, we’ll wake it up again and start watering it again Thursday and Friday. “She should be a very good track to run on – TRNT stewards seemed happy with it last week when they gave it a tour. “She’s not a pretty sandy beach-looking track anymore; it’s gone back to its off-milkshake colour.” Horse racing news View the full article

  18. Cambridge trainer Hollie Wynyard will attempt to turn the clock back 10 years on Saturday to maintain her perfect record at New Zealand’s most northern circuit. Her hopes will rest with Full Force, who has enjoyed a trouble-free preparation ahead of his return to racing at Ruakaka in the Gr.3 Cambridge Stud Northland Breeders’ Stakes (1200m). “It’s a nice race for him and I’ve only ever had one runner at Ruakaka before and that was Vespa and he won,” Wynyard said. She formerly operated in partnership with Johno Benner, who decided to take an indefinite break from training at the end of last season. Full Force will be her first runner in her own right and the son of Cosmic Force measured up favourably against the best of his age group last season. He won once from six appearances and collected three minor placings, including a third in the Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m). “He had a good spell after his two-year-old season and he’s grown a lot and developed,” Wynyard said. “He’s a lot more mature now so I’m looking forward to his three-year-old season. “We’ll just take it one step at a time and there’s plenty of races for him, we’ll kick off on Saturday and then see where we go.” Full Force emphasised his readiness to return when he placed last week in a 900m heat at Te Rapa in the hands of Ryan Elliot, who will be aboard again. “He trialled brilliantly and didn’t have the blinkers on, he’ll have them back on for race day and probably needs them,” Wynyard said. “He just cruised around and had a good blow out. He recovered really well and he’s improved with the trial. “I expect him to go pretty well, he’s fresh-up but he is forward enough.” Previously based at Otaki, Wynyard moved north to Cambridge to establish her solo career. “I’m training out of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young’s old barn behind the pool,” she said. “It’s a good set-up with 20 boxes and they’re pretty much full, I’ve got really good owners, nice horses and great staff so I couldn’t ask for any more.” Among the proven members of the stable back in work are multiple winners Pride Of Aspen and Colorado Silver while two-year-old Toretto is shaping promisingly ahead of his debut. “Pride Of Aspen had a good spell and we’re bringing her up quietly,” Wynyard said. “Colorado Silver had a long break and she’s a talented horse, she’s always been a bit weak and needed time. “Toretto trialled at Te Rapa and hopefully he’ll run at Wanganui, I really like him.” By Ardrossan, the youngster is a brother to last season’s Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1200m) winner Beau Dazzler, who crossed the Tasman to finish midfield in the Karaka Millions 2YO. 19. The successful training partnership of Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray have kicked off the new season with an early milestone, earning their 100th domestic win as a combination at the Cambridge Synthetic on Wednesday. In his own right, Ritchie has been training for more than three decades with 538 domestic winners to his credit including eight at Group One level. Since joining Murray in partnership in 2020, the pair have accumulated six further stakes winners, including a sweep of last season’s Gr.3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) and Gr.2 Auckland Cup (3200m) with Mahrajaan. With five competitive chances throughout the card on Wednesday, Ritchie and Murray hoped to pick up the century at their home meeting and wasted no time in doing so picking up the opener, the Cambridge Equine Hospital 1550, with Mood Changer. Ritchie had allowed the four-year-old plenty of time to find her feet on raceday and that patience paid off, winning fresh-up with some authority on the line after two unplaced runs through December and January. “I loved the way she hit the line hard late and got her head nice and low. She’s been working on the poly at home, so it was always going to suit her,” Ritchie said. “She’s a stunning style of a filly, she’s just taken a bit of time to work out what’s going on. She’s been a bit keen in her races and when we trialled her last time we rode her cold, and even before the corner she was trucking up beautifully. “We rode her that way today, letting her get into her rhythm and she’s finished off very well. “She’s more of a summer horse, but we might try our arm at Hastings for a bit more prize money.” A daughter of War Decree, Mood Changer was an inexpensive purchase for Ritchie and persevering through early issues with the mare has proved worthwhile. “I paid $500 for her at Kevin Hickman’s dispersal sale and I knew she had a cyst on her stifle, but that’s the most successful operation we’ve found in the past so I spent more money getting the surgery than buying the horse,” he said. “I wasn’t going to put clients into a horse that was a risk, so I just decided to keep her myself. “I really liked her, and I trained her dam Footsie, she had a lot of ability but she wasn’t sound unfortunately.” After reaching the milestone, Ritchie was pleased for Murray and was swift in recognising Nassak Diamond’s dominant victory in the iconic Jericho Cup (4600m) at Warrnambool last December as a highlight for the expat-Irishman. “Mood Changer was Colm’s 100th winner and ours in partnership, we’ve been going for about four years so it’s great,” he said. “He’s a good horseman, he’s got to his 100 pretty quick and he’s obviously going to make a very good trainer in his own right in time. “We were pretty confident with Rick Williams that Nassak Diamond could win the Jericho Cup last year, to the degree that we flew Colm over for the weekend as I’d been there with the horse all week. “That was a big thrill because he’s got a hurdle rider background up in Ireland, and of course the Jericho Cup is a hurdle rider’s race worth $300,000. “It was really cool for us to be on course and enjoy that, it was something special. “As far as I was concerned, the Auckland Cup was a big kick for me because I was brought up around the streets around Ellerslie. “My grandfather trained there and it was the race I got a massive buzz out of. “We’ve had some nice horses and it’s been good, so long may it continue. “We look like we’ve got a good season coming with Pearl Of Alsace, Nereus and Mahrajaan as well as some trialling three-year-old’s and poly winners that we hope to advance onto the grass this season.” Ritchie also made mention of the benefits the Cambridge Synthetic track has offered their talented contingent heading into the spring period, including acting as an early springboard for Gr.2 Awapuni Gold Cup (2400m) winner Nereus last season. “We’ve got some nice spring horses coming through, and in our opinion, the polytrack is a massive advantage at this time of the year,” he said. “Rather than trialling on heavy tracks, we would much rather have a trial, exhibition gallop or even a race at the horses’ first start so they can get on that even surface. “We’ve taken advantage of that, and it’s not because we think they’re just poly horses. We think they are progressive horses and it’s easier for us to walk over the road from home and they can be back in their paddock quickly afterwards to recover. “We can bounce to the major meetings on turf from there, for example Nereus won on the poly at his second start and he’s gone on to win an Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr.2, 2100m), so there’s definitely a right place for it, particularly at this time of the year when our heavy tracks are inconsistent.” View the full article
