Continuing an important weekend as next month's Breeders' Cup World Championships rapidly approach, Keeneland's GI Juddmonte Spinster Stakes headlines Sunday's graded stakes action spanning from coast to coast. A 'Win and You're In' for the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff, the Spinster has six contenders signed on, including last season's champion older mare Idiomatic (Curlin), who draws the rail under regular pilot Florent Geroux. The winner of a trio of Grade I stakes in 2023–capped off by the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Santa Anita–the Juddmonte homebred has proven consistent at five, while showing a couple of chinks in the armor. An impressive 3 3/4-length winner in a sloppy renewal of Churchill's GI La Troienne Stakes May 3, the bay found Randomized (Nyquist) a head too good in the GI Ogden Phipps Stakes at Saratoga June 8. Earning a hard-fought win over Soul of an Angel (Atreides) in Monmouth's GIII Matchmaker Stakes July 20, the Brad Cox trainee again had to play second fiddle– this time to the closing Raging Sea (Curlin)–after enduring a contested early pace in the nine-furlong GI Personal Ensign Stakes at the Spa Aug. 23. KatieRich Stables LLC's May Day Ready (Tapit), who proved narrowly best in a three-way photo in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GII Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland, will return to the Belmont Park base of trainer Joe Lee to prepare for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. “I guess we will go back to New York; she trains well over that track,” Lee said. “Probably ship in the next few days. She lost the right front shoe, so we are going to take a good look at it here. She seems fine–the shoe came off cleanly. Not sure when it happened.” Lee said he hopes he can find the missing shoe as a keepsake. “I know my kids would want a set of four instead of three,” he joked. Lee trains fewer than 10 horses out of his barn at Belmont and has a long history of galloping and assisting with top-class gallopers. After working for D. Wayne Lukas for a time, Lee in 1993 began a long association with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum with several trainers, including Kiaran McLaughlin. Lee, his wife Susie and his four children celebrated Friday's victory at Don Jockey restaurant in nearby Midway, Kentucky, with KatieRich principles Larry and Karen Doyle. Doyle also brought the traditional box of donuts to the barn Saturday morning. There was a time when projecting the winner of the G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was simple. Just look for the Andre Fabre-trained colt perfectly tuned for the ParisLongchamp monument and voila. Times change, of course, and the master of Chantilly no longer enjoys the same dominion over the great race he conquered on five occasions between his inaugural victory with Trempolino in 1987 and Sagamix (Fr) in 1998. Just a trio have managed to extend that tally subsequently, which interestingly features only two older horses. This year, he enjoys the perfect scenario with an elite 3-year-old colt in the form of Sosie (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who has steadily morphed into an ideal candidate for this autumnal overture. Those who witnessed his heavy defeat at the hands of the filly War Chimes (Fr) (Summer Front) as a fledgling in Chantilly's Listed Prix Isonomy would not have predicted he would be heading to post as near-favourite for the Arc, but this is a cast-in-stone mile-and-a-half specialist who has needed time and distance to thrive. Third behind Look De Vega (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) when looking to find the 10 1/2-furlong trip of the G1 Prix du Jockey Club too sharp in June, the Wertheimer homebred came into his own when overpowering his peers in the course-and-distance G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G2 Prix Niel. The former saw him close out the last three furlongs of this track in 33.66, which he didn't need to repeat in this race's traditional 3-year-old prep three weeks ago. While she was racing beyond her optimum, the Grand Prix de Paris third Tamfana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) did her bit for the form in the G1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. Alain and Gerard Wertheimer understand the significance of this event, a qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf next month, more than most and with the sharp filly Aventure (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in as able understudy, 2024 is a big year for the operation. “Not all horses are used to Longchamp, but he knows the track and it is definitely a plus for him,” their racing manager Pierre-Yves Bureau said. “In my mind he [Sosie] is the best 3-year-old French colt at this distance at the moment, so it will be very interesting to see if he can be competitive and be the best on Sunday. He's being called one of the favourites, but in my mind five or six horses could be favourite.” LA Dreaming… Where Fabre was once the undisputed King of Europe, Aidan O'Brien now holds that unofficial title but this ultimate prize has been hard to conquer even though he saddled a remarkable one-two-three in 2016. In many ways, Los Angeles (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) fits the “Fabre mould” as an already high-class 3-year-old colt seemingly honed for the demands of this race. After an effort in the Derby that can be upgraded, he appeared to coast through a G1 Irish Derby and a G2 Great Voltigeur under a maximum penalty before putting up an eye-catching display over a trip short of his best in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes. “We've yet to see the best of him,” warned Aidan O'Brien, who enjoyed such a stellar Saturday at the track. “He's a very big horse, is making progress and has a very imposing physique. The trip suits him perfectly. He acts well on right-handed courses and this has been the plan since his victory in the Irish Derby.” Worth A Second Look? Having lost his unbeaten record in the Niel, Al Shaqab Racing and Ballylinch Stud's G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Look De Vega (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) faces the ultimate test of his stamina which is unproven beyond 10 1/2 furlongs. From the family of the fellow Chantilly Classic winners Latice (Ire) (Inchinor {GB}) and Lawman (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), there is a genuine doubt as to whether he can stretch out sufficiently to prove a force to be reckoned with in this company. His tame finishing effort up the ligne droite here last time has been put down to being off his ideal racing weight, but equally it could hint at a fault line in his staying power. Defeat in the Niel is not the end, however, and his many supporters can take solace in the memory of both Peintre Celebre and Bago (Fr) (Nashwan) being overturned in it prior to making the leap forward the following month. “I think it's a wide-open race and it is nice to see he has a nice draw in eight which means Ronan [Thomas] will have options and will be able to see where the pace is early,” Al Shaqab's French racing consultant Rupert Pritchard-Gordon said. “The most important thing is Yann and Carlos are very pleased with him, I spoke to Yann a couple of days ago and he feels he has got the horse in a good place now and ready to do himself justice in the big one.” The Supporting Cast… Whether Shin Emperor (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) will end the long period of hurt for Japan in this race remains to be seen, but as a full-brother to the 2019 winner Sottsass (Fr) he has better pedigree credentials than many of his compatriots who have tried and failed before. His full-sibling was a 4-year-old when succeeding, having come up short a year previously and it could be that Susumu Fujita's big hope is a touch on the tender side encountering such fierce competition. That doesn't apply to Juddmonte's hardened filly Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}) and Baron Edouard De Rothschild's admirable Mqse De Sevigne (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}), but where the former needs this trip and has an ideal draw the latter faces the double whammy of unproven stamina and the outside post. The grand talents in their different spheres Joseph O'Brien and Yutaka Take covet a first Arc and there is more than an outside chance that it could come via the Japanese-owned G1 Grosser Preis von Berlin winner Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). He still has untapped potential despite being towards the end of his 4-year-old career and has been specifically targeted at this even before his gallant second to City Of Troy (Justify) in the G1 Eclipse. Coolmore's G3 Prix du Lys winner Delius (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was even faster than Sosie when finishing the Grand Prix de Paris in :33.57 and has the look of a colt whose aim this has always been. He could thrive off a stronger pace which is also the case for Aventure whose finishing kick has to be employed at the precise moment, while Guy Pariente Holding and Qatar Racing Ltd's Irish Derby runner-up Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) is one of the live outsiders due to his blue-collar aptitude. Trainer David Menuisier thinks his temperament will take him a long way. “We've been mulling over with Guy Pariente whether to go for the Arc and it seems to be a case of now or never,” he explained. “The horse is flying at the moment, having been in good form all year so there's no reason not to go for it. He's had no luck this year and we're waiting for the day it will turn. He is one of the toughest horses that I've ever trained and he never stops giving of his best.” “We've learned to understand him better over time,” he added. “He can handle all types of ground, but the key with him is pace. He needs a strong pace and all the more so because he's endowed with genuine stamina.” The New Zarkava? Sunday's ParisLongchamp card opens with something potentially very special, as it did in 2007 when Zarkava (Ire) (Zamindar) first served notice of her supreme athleticism in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac. So when her granddaughter Zarigana (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) lit up the G3 Prix d'Aumale over this course and mile trip last month it was inevitable that the Aga Khan homebred would spurn comparison with her esteemed ancestress in this “Win and You're In” for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. If Ballydoyle's fellow TDN Rising Star Bedtime Story (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) is on her A-game, this renewal could be one of the very best in its history but her latest performance in the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes suggests she is in danger of going the wrong way having looked such a world-beater in the Listed Chesham Stakes. Francis-Henri Graffard is hoping that Zarigana can extend the stable's year-long purple patch. “She is very well, everything has gone smoothly and we're looking forward to Sunday,” he said. “She won nicely in her two races and it's big step up in class now, hopefully she can show she is competitive against group 1 fillies. She won on soft ground the other day so we're not worried about that, she's a good-looking, well-bred filly with a lot of talent.” Aidan O'Brien said of Bedtime Story, “She just jumped smart and was then a little bit keen in the Moyglare and we think that was the reason for her little bit of a disappointing run.” He also has the progressive Moyglare third Exactly (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who has to reverse a narrow margin with Simmering (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) from that contest, and who will be forcing the pace from the outset as Ryan Moore tries to get Bedtime Story back on an even keel. Better than ever after his serious injury when taking the G1 Nunthorpe Stakes and G1 Flying Five, the Archie Watson-trained TDN Rising Star may only have to repeat his defeats of compatriot Believing (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) to bring up a significant treble. “It would have been better to have been two or three closer to the rail, but there are no excuses,” Victorious Racing's racing manager Oliver St Lawrence said of this qualifier for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. “Him and Believing have emerged as the top two around, the only other is Lazzat who won the Maurice de Gheest and he's heading for the Golden Eagle in Australia, I believe. Hopefully all will be revealed and the rain stays away. I think next year will depend on how he runs over the next short while, but I think he will probably retire. Having done all her best work overseas, the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas and G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes winner was no match for the crack miler Porta Fortuna (Ire) (Caravaggio) in Leopardstown's G1 Matron Stakes last month, prompting this change in ploy. “Going up in trip is going to be the big question, but everyone in the team feels that will really suit her,” Wathnan's racing adviser Richard Brown said. “It was a great comeback run in the Matron and we were delighted with that having been off a fair while and we're looking forward to seeing her up in trip. The ground will be on the soft side and she will enjoy that. James [Doyle] said you can do what you want with her, put her where you want in a race, she's just a complete pro and that is going to stand her in good stead for a big day.” Interestingly, Ryan Moore has opted to ride the Matron fourth Ylang Ylang (GB) (Frankel {GB}) over the G1 Yorkshire Oaks heroine Content (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), whose main priority is the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, with the Opera a “Win and You're In” for the Del Mar feature. George Strawbridge's G2 Prix Alec Head and G3 Valiant Stakes winner Friendly Soul (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is in deeper waters, but as a half-sister to the 2014 Opera heroine We Are (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) she has the pedigree to fit. Can Kinross Do It Again? Successful in the 2022 G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret, Marc Chan's Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) returns with an ideal low draw in a swollen edition taken on by the likes of Godolphin's G1 Prix du Moulin hero Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}) and Yeguada Centurion's 2023 G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes hero Big Rock (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). With so many runners, the Ralph Beckett-trained stalwart should be able to tuck in and conserve energy and wait for the gaps to appear in the straight, which is his style. Christopher Head puts Ramatuelle (Justify) back into action off a lengthy break having failed to truly stay the mile of the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and this seven-furlong trip could prove to be her forte. “Ramatuelle is really nice and she's had a lot of advantage missing the summer, it's really done her well,” he said. “She is really doing her job every morning and I am really happy with her. LEXINGTON, KY–International owner and breeder Bobby Flay has re-purchased his homebred Breeders' Cup champion Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus})-White Hot {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) from Resolute Bloodstock's John Stewart. Flay and Stewart finalized the private sale of Pizza Bianca and her first foal by Into Mischief on Saturday morning at Resolute Farm. Pizza Bianca claimed the 2021 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Also a stakes winner at three, she was offered at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars Sale, but Flay ultimately decided to retain her. She made one start at four before she retired and was bred to Into Mischief. At last year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale, she sold for $3 million to John Stewart. Pizza Bianca's Into Mischief filly arrived on April 8 at Resolute Farm and the mare was bred back to Justify. Flay said the conversation about potentially buying back his star homebred started earlier this year at the Keeneland September Sale. Flay greets Pizza Bianca at Resolute Farm | Katie Petrunyak “I certainly had some seller's remorse after I sold her in terms of just emotionally, you don't breed Breeders' Cup winners every single day,” he explained. “I'd been thinking about Pizza Bianca for the past year and then when John said that he might be interested in selling her back to me, I started having conversations with him.” Flay acquired Pizza Bianca's dam White Hot for 1,250,000 guineas at the 2014 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The daughter of Galileo is out of Gwynn (Ire) (Darshaan {GB}), also the dam of 2011 Epsom Derby winner Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and other graded stakes winners. While White Hot never raced, her first foal was Pizza Bianca. At last year's Keeneland November Sale, Flay sold White Hot to BBA Ireland for $2.1 million. Also at last year's fall breeding stock sales, he sold many of his other top broodmares like graded stakes winner and producer Dame Dorothy (Bernardini); Veronique (Mizzen Mast), the dam of stakes winner and sire Nashville (Speightstown); and Ruby Lips (Hard Spun), the dam of MGSWs Lone Rock (Majestic Warrior) and Gerrymander (Into Mischief), sparking rumors that the celebrity chef and restaurateur was getting out of the horse business. Flay acknowledged that he did take a temporary step back from racing in 2023, but was quick to note that he was still active as an owner and breeder both in the U.S. and abroad. “I was in a place in my horse business life where I wasn't sure what I was going to do in terms of the future,” Flay explained. “I wanted to take a pause in racing in the U.S. because I wanted to see how the industry was going to react to some of the not-so-great news and events that we had. I have to say that the industry, with HISA at the helm, has done a lot of great work in a very short period of time. As somebody who cares about the horses first and foremost, I want to have the confidence that we're doing everything we can to ensure the best possible results that we can get. Nothing is 100% and never will be, but I want everybody on the same page.” Flay said that he did not know Stewart prior to their conversations surrounding Pizza Bianca. From where I sit, I feel like he thinks it's a good thing to do for everybody involved.” Prior to Saturday's sale of an undisclosed sum, Pizza Bianca was slated to go through the ring at Fasig-Tipton's upcoming Night of the Stars Sale on Nov. 4. “I can totally understand Bobby's point of view,” said John Stewart. “She was a Breeders' Cup winner for him and you sell them and get a good price but then you're having reservations, especially when the foals come out looking like this. So when we were approached about this opportunity I thought this was the right thing to do at the end of the day. I'd want someone to do that for me if I made that decision. It was the right thing to do.” Flay said that Pizza Bianca's Into Mischief filly will likely join his racing stable in the future. “In my conventional business model, which there is really no such thing when it comes to this business but especially with these big pedigrees that I own, it's to sell the colts and race the fillies,” he said. “If you ask me today what I'm going to do with the Into Mischief, it's to race her. It's the first foal and she's beautiful. “This business is a great leveller,” says Emma Banks, who is preparing for the sales debut of the first foal of her star mare Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) at Tattersalls next week. The Dubawi (Ire) colt is being consigned by Fittocks Stud, where he was born, and is lot 242 on Wednesday. “It's getting nerve-wracking. He's going to be the second horse I've sold this year. I had a yearling in the Somerville Sale, which didn't sell. I'd have happily raced him but Tim Easterby bought him outside the ring for 1,000gns, which is great because Tim will do a great job and if there's any racehorse in there, he will find it. But [selling for] 1,000gns ends up with you being sent £82 by Tattersalls. So all hope rests on Lady Bowthorpe and, really, he's a nice yearling.” She adds, “But they're horses, aren't they? And you can't wrap them in cotton wool, and they're in a field with their mates for the first 18 months of their lives, and something might happen, and that's what you have to accept. And I think I'm quite good at accepting stuff. It'll happen or it won't happen.” So far, in Banks's association with the eight-year-old Lady Bowthorpe, much has happened. The winner of five of her races, three at group level, the mare brought the house down at Goodwood when winning the Nassau Stakes – an emotional final Group 1 winner for popular Newmarket trainer William Jarvis. “She wasn't the easiest as a racehorse,” Banks recalls. “She was obviously really good, but she was tricky and had her own way about her, and was a terrible traveller. William did a brilliant job getting out of her what he did, and Claire, who always looked after her – I sound like Aidan O'Brien – but Claire looked after her for so long and had such a bond with her.” Banks now has five broodmares, including the dual Listed-winning sprinter Mrs Gallagher (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and two for National Hunt. Both Lady Bowthorpe and Mrs Gallagher were bought for her at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by former trainer James Toller. Banks continues, “I've always wanted to breed and I figured out, for me, I need to breed from the best horses, because when you're boarding them as well, it's too expensive and it doesn't work. The first filly that I bought as a yearling was Mrs Gallagher. So she's very current now. I called her Mrs Gallagher because I got obsessed with Mrs Danvers who was the season before, and she was by Oasis Dream, so that's where the Gallagher thing came from.” The reference to the Oasis reunion of the Gallagher brothers is of course a telltale sign of Banks's day job as one of the most powerful agents in the music business. The co-head of global touring at the Creative Artists Agency, she draws parallels with that business and the imbalance in returns to racehorse owners. “I look at the music business because, while they're very different, they're actually really similar, to me,” she says. “My clients are the musicians, the bands, and I'm here to plot and plan with them and their teams a career strategy for them, which is what I think I do with my trainers for my horses. “Nobody goes to Wembley Arena or Wembley Stadium or the Shepherd's Bush Empire or wherever, if there's no one playing there. So why are people going? They're going because of the musicians, the actors or the opera singers that are performing. So the right way to look at it is that if there is money coming in, they should get most of the money, because otherwise, like Maine Road, Old Trafford, they're empty if footballers aren't playing. People complain about how much footballers earn, but they generate so much money, and people go because they want to see Ronaldo. In the same way, people went to Southwell to see City Of Troy do a gallop. If ever there was proof that if you have horses that have become celebrities, people go, that was it. That was a very special moment. I went to see Enable run at Kempton in the September Stakes. I didn't go because I wanted to go racing. I was obsessed with Enable.” She continues, “I sometimes wonder whether the owners get enough good stuff, given that, if there aren't any horses, there's nothing else. The racecourses can go whistle if there are no horses. The bookmakers, they might say they don't really care about horseracing any more, but of course they do. “So, to me, there has to be a bit of an acceptance that without the horses, there isn't Newmarket, there isn't ARC [Arena Racing Company], there isn't any of this stuff. I struggle with that a little bit. The way that the music business works is that, if Shepherd's Bush Empire is the equivalent to a racecourse, Shepherd's Bush Empire get paid a fee for their facility. And you take that and any other costs off the net income, and then the artist gets probably 85% or 90% of the money, because they're the ones that have earned the money, and everyone that's putting it together gets less money than that. That's not how racing works. I've only been doing this 10 years, so I'm still an amateur, but to me, it's a very interesting thing that the feeling is apparently that owners don't deserve as much of the money. “I'm not trying to be particularly tricky about it, but I just think that we've lost who's putting what into this and the balance is wrong. No racecourse would invest as much as an owner does for no return. They are service providers, [owners] are talent providers. Talent should earn more than service.” As regards her own breeding operation, Banks is building a promising base of talent with her stakes-winning daughters of Nathaniel and Oasis Dream. She is also selling a Pinatubo (Ire) filly out of Mrs Gallagher through New England Stud in Book 2. “Mrs Gallagher was my first filly. I bought two fillies that year, the other one wasn't quite so good, but Mrs G did great,” she says. “And so when it came to retiring her, I had decided that I wanted to breed, and I thought to myself that it's rare you get a horse as good as this. So that's where it started, and I sent her back to New England Stud, where she'd come from.” No sooner had Mrs Gallagher departed for stud than Lady Bowthorpe, who missed her two-year-old season with a fracture, started to hint that she might be decent by winning a novice race at Lingfield. Far better was to come however, namely the G3 Valiant Stakes during her four-year-old season, and the G2 Dahlia and G1 Nassau Stakes at five, as well as finishing runner-up to Palace Pier (GB) in the G1 Lockinge and third in her swansong behind Baaeed (GB) in the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Qipco British Champions Day. And in the breeding equivalent of excellence, at least in the early days of a broodmare's career, she has delivered Banks two consecutive colts by Dubawi. “She's in foal to Too Darn Hot with another colt,” says Banks, who admits that she is eager to keep a filly from the mare. Lady Bowthorpe lives alongside her own dam Maglietta Fina (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}), a long-term resident at Fittocks for her owners Paolo and Emma Agostini of Scuderia Archi Romani, who bred Lady Bowthorpe and her multiple group-winning half-brother Speak In Colours (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}). “I love listening to people like Kirsten Rausing talking,” she continues. “She's put so much time and money and effort into it, and the fact that you can have families that go back three, four, five generations – I find it fascinating, and I'm still learning so much. I learned so much from talking to Peter Stanley and Luca and Sara Cumani, and I'm really lucky to have all those people in my life that are so kind and give me info and advice and opinions, which most of the time I take, because I know what I know and I know what I don't know.” Though Banks is a relative newcomer to Thoroughbred breeding, horses have been a theme of her life since her early years, and she often races in partnership with her father, Richard. “My dad's now much more into horses than he was, but his father [Sidney] had bred, raced, trained for himself, and my uncle, dad's brother, Michael, was a steward, a Jockey Club member, chairman of Huntingdon, and bred a bit, raced, trained. So there have always been horses around,” she says. “I had ponies when I was growing up and loved it, and then when I got my job, that was sort of the end of it. Living in London and having a job where you're out late wasn't conducive to it.” Since buying her first horse, Lackaday (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}), 10 years ago she says she soon got over the feeling that it was a bit flash to be a racehorse owner and realised that she “needed to have as many as I could possibly afford”. Banks adds, “I introduce as many of my friends to racing as possible, and there's the odd person that doesn't like it and that's fine. And there are probably more people that are uncomfortable about jump racing than Flat racing. But now I look at some of my counterparts who play golf and hold meetings at the golf course for eight hours. So I have been known to have meetings with my team at a racecourse. They love it. I'm very proud of [my involvement] and happy to share it with people. “I want to be able to race some that I've bred, because I think that's just the ultimate thrill. But I also do have to be realistic about selling. Emotionally, I'm obviously incredibly attached to Lady Bowthorpe, but you also have an obligation when you keep her to give her the very best chance. And the very best chance is the most expensive chance.” The mare's two assignations with Dubawi to date have not been on foal-share agreements, and after her first visit the Darley veteran's fee rose from £250,000 to £350,000. The stakes certainly remain high when retaining a Group 1 winner for broodmare duties. Banks says, “She went off to Fittocks and I was having the conversation in the kitchen, all enthusiastic, and saying, “What about this stallion?” And Luca is so good at just killing you with a look, in a brilliant, loving way. And he said, 'Well, no. She really has to go to Dubawi.' “So I'm £600,000 in, and it's a lot of money for anyone, but it's an investment in her future, it's investment in my future. And if it pays off, that will be brilliant. And I know that I will have done the very best I can for her.” From the lows of that early setback and a near miss in the G1 Falmouth Stakes, Lady Bowthorpe also played her part in giving her owner her most memorable days in racing. “When she came second to Palace Pier, that was one of my most special moments,” she recalls. “The fact that we were so far ahead of everyone else and no one had expected it, that was a really special day. “And then the Falmouth all went wrong for her but Goodwood was just incredible and so special. So special for William – his first Group 1 for so many years, and it was Kieran Shoemark's first Group 1. I still relive it all the time.” Banks adds, “And I really hope for whoever buys her colt that he's a great racehorse because I can't tell you how much I want her to have a legacy.” . Ballydoyle's star stayer Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Polished Gem {Ire}, by Danehill) went unbeaten through six contests in 2022 and completed an exact replica of that campaign with a pillar-to-post triumph in Saturday's G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp. That 2002 season included an extravagant win in this marathon event, but it was a more straightforward affair this time around. The 1-5 favourite, fresh off a second success in the G1 Irish St Leger, went straight to the front and sent an even tempo for the most part. Second choice Arte Veloce (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) led home paternal half-brother Taisei Current (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) en route to breaking his black-type duck in the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup at Tokyo on Saturday. The Teruo Ono-raced colt was trying 1600 metres for the first time and remained unbeaten. A July 27 maiden winner over 1500 metres at Sapporo at first asking, Saturday's 5-2 shot was not hindered by the rain and was taken under a firm hold when too eager down the backstretch by pilot Naosuke Sugai. Shin Forever (Complexity) loped along on the front end while shadowed by Food Man (Kingman {GB}), and Meinter Ticket (Jpn) (Danon Ballade {Jpn}) and favoured Arlecchino (Jpn) (Bricks And Mortar) maintained a close watch on the leading pair on the bend. Switched to the outside for his bid, Arte Veloce was given his cue, and he began his trek toward the vanguard as the field entered the home straight. Sugai delivered an animated ride on his charge, and any one of five had a decent shot at the furlong grounds. The eventual winner kept gaining, eventually bursting past his rivals with five strides to spare and kept going to win by a length. It was a half-length between Taisei Current and Meiner Ticket in second and third. Pacesetter Shin Forever held on for fourth, another half-length back.
