Take the Glen Osmond Rd to National Highway M1, following along the M1 before exiting towards the B55/Murray Brg/Mannum. Continue onto Adeliade Rd before turning right onto Old Swanport Rd, from there, simply follow the signs and make another right onto Brinkley Rd. There is plenty of parking on course for travellers and locals alike, so feel free to drive to your location, or perhaps elect to get a taxi or uber to the course proper. Local bus routes are also available to take you to the track, so be sure to check the schedule so you don’t miss the opening race. Murray Bridge racecourse dimensions and starting points Murray Bridge Racecourse is run in an anti-clockwise direction, with a circumference of 1850m and a home straight of 420m, making it considered one of the fairest country tracks across the state. Races at Murray Bridge are held between distances of 900m to 2400m. Murray Bridge racecourse’s 900m starting point is from a chute located to the north-west of the winning post, while the 1000m starting point is located slightly further to the east, with only a short run to the course proper. The 1400m and 1600m starting points also disengaged from a chute located to the north-east of the winning post, while the 2400m start is located directly west of the winning post, with runners needing to make a sustained run down the home straight. If the weather in Saratoga Springs of late is any indication of what's to come at the Humphrey S. Finney Pavilion Monday and Tuesday evenings, the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale is poised for a volcanic renewal. In 2023, a total of 154 yearlings sold for $75,055,000, averaging $487,370 with a median of 375,000. The gross jumped from $66,955,000 generated for 143 sold in 2022. “The vibe feels good here,” confirmed Taylor Made's Frank Taylor. “Everybody you would want to see in the courtyard, you would have seen walk in. The horses have been showing well and the weather hasn't been too hot and they're doing pretty well.” Taylor continued, “Like always, we try to bring horses up here that are really good physicals, have good walks, vet well and have pedigrees.” A total of 240 yearlings have been cataloged this season, up from the 235 enlisted one year ago. According to Fasig-Tipton's Boyd Browning Jr., the quality remains on par with seasons' past, highlighted by a pair of its poster boys and Classic division alums–GI Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey (Arrogate), a $300,000 Saratoga buy, and GI Toyota Blue Grass Stakes winner Sierra Leone (Gun Runner), also runner-up in the GI Kentucky Derby and third in the GI Belmont Stakes. The latter topped last year's sale with a $2.3 million final bid from White Birch Farm and M.V. Magnier. Also gracing this year's catalog, 2023 Preakness hero National Treasure (Quality Road), who returned at four to annex the GI Pegasus World Cup and the GI Met Mile. Rounding out the quartet, GI Del Mar Futurity scorer Prince of Monaco (Speightstown), runner-up in the June 8 GI Woody Stephens Stakes at Saratoga, realized $950,000 in Saratoga in 2022. “The success of our sales graduates has certainly made the sale,” said Browning. “It's even increased its prominence when you have horses like we've got on the front cover this year. These are some of the best stallions prospects in North America.” Browning points out that Saratoga shoppers have become accustomed to the quality that they find at the venue in upstate New York. “The buyers have high expectations when they come to Saratoga,” he explained. “Fortunately, our consignors continue to bring us horses that meet those expectations and that perform on the racetrack.” Taylor echoed that sentiment. “You really have to bring a horse up here that really vets well, looks good, walks good, has a good mind and shows well,” he said. “If you bring a horse that jumps through all the hoops, you'll get paid really well.” Commenting on the group of yearlings amassed for this summer's renewal, Browning said, “It's a fantastic group of yearlings on the sales grounds, and you know, that doesn't just happen. It's not magic on our part. The consignors had to show us quality yearlings and feel confident in bringing them here and they brought us the best. I'm very enthusiastic. I'm very excited and I can't wait to kick it off.” The annual boutique sale has become a well-established source of million-dollar babies. Case in point, the 2023 renewal of the auction saw 10 yearlings surpass the seven-figure mark, headed by the $4 million paid by Zedan Racing for a son of Curlin out of champion Beholder. While it is true the sale routinely unearths the fancy pedigrees and physicals that go for big money every year, the venue has developed a reputation of offering prospects to those not shopping at the top level of the market as well. “Our graduates are a testament to the fact that the sale can cater to different segments of the market,” Browning said. “You have Sierra Leone running in the Classics, a top caliber horse. He was a topper here. Then you have Seize the Grey, a horse that wins the Preakness and he brought $300,000 here. So that tells me a bit about the diversity of the horses that you have here.” He continued, “Honestly, I think it's a bit of a misconception about the Saratoga sale among some of the buyers. But I can tell you we've got 240 horses in this catalog and there are no fillers. They may not all be million-dollar horses, but every horse has been selected by their owners, consignors and lastly, by us. We start with 2500 yearlings in our process and we end up with 240 in the catalog. That's literally less than 10% of the horses we started with in the process and that actually ended up on the sale's grounds.” Underscoring that quality doesn't have to cost millions, Mill Ridge's Price Bell pointed toward a pair of the consignment's graduates who have exited the sale and gone on to excel. “We sold Seize the Grey and [MGSW & GISP] Red Carpet Ready (Oscar Performance–$180,000 purchase in 2021) here,” he said. “Both were sold for well below the average of the sale. But both were sold for very good prices for our owners and breeders. So we always nominated a lot of horses to the Fasig sales in March and their team comes out to inspect them and we talk through each one. They might not be the most expensive yearlings, but we feel like we can bring athletes here.” After kicking off the yearling market at the July sale last month, Browning expects to see more of the same in Saratoga. “I think that was an indication that there was interest and enthusiastic participation from a broad spectrum of buyers,” he affirmed. “Of course, business is alive and well. You're always a bit concerned when you kick off a new sales cycle, yearlings, 2-year-old and broodmares, etc. But July reaffirmed that, hey people still want good horses. They want racehorses.” Bell concurred that the catalog offers many opportunities to buy a top-rung prospect and that can fit into almost any program. “If the past is any indication, there are going to be four or five Grade I winners on the grounds,” said Bell. “So that's a great compliment to the Fasig recruitment team. It really is indicative of the quality that's here, that the owners, breeders and Fasig have worked to recruit and agree is the best place to showcase them. It's not for every horse, because it can be a long time to be here. It can give people an opportunity to fall out of love with them. Safe to say you won't be seeing long odds on The Queens M G (Thousand Words) any more. Off her shocking win at odds of 44-1 in the Schuylerville Stakes July 11, the Saffie Joseph, Jr. runner took serious money Sunday and rewarded her backers again at 5-2 with an impressive victory in the GIII Adirondack Stakes to become her freshman sire's (by Pioneerof the Nile) first graded winner. An unlikely debut winner at Keeneland Apr. 7, The Queens M G outlasted next out Kentucky Juvenile Fillies Stakes winner West Memorial (Caracaro) to bring the 45-1 upset for then-trainer Israel Acevedo before joining the Saffie Joseph, Jr. barn. Favored in the Astoria Stakes on Belmont weekend at Saratoga June 6, she faded badly to seventh and bettors responded to that effort with those long odds again in the Schuylerville. And so, coming into Sunday's Adirondack, The Queens M G needed to prove she could run at short odds and safe to say, the message was delivered. Breaking from the outside under Dylan Davis, who was also aboard for her Schuylerville win, 5-2 second choice was able to sit a nice trip in fourth as a trio of rivals pushed each other up front led by 'TDN Rising Star' Anakarina (Vekoma). Close to the speed of a :21.42 opening quarter, she began to inch up, taking third into the far turn while still outside in the clear and, under only a shake of the reins from Davis, it was game on. As the pacesetters wilted along the fence, The Queens M G tipped down to the inside and came home in style with only race favorite Italian Soiree (Uncle Mo) doing any running late to fill the exacta. “I think she improved a lot from her last start,” said Davis. “She got a little more aggressive and she knew what she had to do again today. She showed more. Outside post again, and I could really sit off it and let her do what she wants. She was more aggressive coming out of there on a hot pace. She's able to settle and she's really versatile. She just waits for my cue and responds. She's really nice to ride and the team did a good job with her again today.” Saffie Joseph, Jr. added: “She wasn't 40-1, so the pressure was on. I thought today we would see if we had a legit horse, or not. We were hoping to get back-to-back wins and get through it. The way she ran–she had a pace scenario–this was the first time she wasn't really pressing, she had to sit a little bit. We worked her the other day inside of a horse in case she drew inside. Thankfully, we got a good post again. She's drawn outside all three times, so that's been to her advantage. She showed a new dimension because she sat off a couple horses and she quickened. Today, was her best by far. With a timely move just before the wire, Waves of Mischief (Into Mischief–Pearl River, by Quality Road) netted the first graded win of her career in the GIII Pucker Up Stakes at Ellis Park on Sunday. A maiden-breaker first out at Keeneland back in April, the 3-year-old rolled into Ellis with blinkers off and as a 7-1 shot here. From the bell, the Brendan Walsh trainee closely tracked a bunch into the first turn which included favorite Pin Up Betty (Constitution). When the chalk seized the lead from the others up the backstretch it looked as though she had gained the advantage. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert wasn't going to do that the day after his National Treasure (Quality Road) finished a non-threatening sixth in Saturday's $1 million GI Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. National Treasure, who had been at the top of most lists as the best older horse in the nation, laid an egg as the 4-5 favorite. “He just didn't show up,” Baffert said on the Saratoga backstretch Sunday morning. “Once he didn't get into the race early, that was it. I knew right there that he was going to lose interest and he did. He did not bring his 'A' game. It happens.” Arthur's Ride (Tapit, 6-1) from the Hall of Fame barn of Bill Mott, ran the way that Baffert hoped National Treasure would. He led the 1 1/8-mile race virtually gate-to-wire and won by 2 3/4 lengths. In June, National Treasure won the GI Metropolitan Handicap by 6 1/4 lengths at Saratoga. The Whitney was run over a track labeled “muddy (sealed).” National Treasure has finished off the board in the three times he has ran over an off track. He was fifth in the GI Travers Stakes last year at the Spa on a muddy track and fourth in the GI Awesome Again Stakes on a wet/fast surface at Santa Anita last September. “I'm not blaming the track,” Baffert said. “The track was in good shape. I knew it was over on the first turn.” Baffert said National Treasure will ship home to California on Tuesday. It remains to be seen whether Baffert will come back for the Travers Stakes Aug. 24. He had said last week that it was possible that GI Arkansas Derby winner Muth (Good Magic) could make his first start since that March 30 race in the Midsummer Derby. He backed off of that, a little, on Sunday. “I don't know,” he said. “I am a little behind. If you go to the Travers, you have to have a horse that is pretty well seasoned. Muth is seasoned, but he hasn't run in a long time. I am leaving the door open, but it's just open a little bit.” Muth worked six furlongs out of the gate at Del Mar Sunday in 1:12 (1/4). “We nominate everywhere and see who is doing the best,” he said. Brightwork OK The Day After Flipping In Paddock Caused Her To Miss Test There was disappointment at the barn of trainer John Ortiz Sunday morning, but also a sense of relief. Brightwork (Outwork) was doing fine the day after she flipped in the paddock and was subsequently scratched from the GI Test Stakes Saturday by track veterinarians. “She is ok,” Ortiz said outside his barn on the Saratoga backstretch. “She has some superficial small cuts around her ankle, but, other than that, she is fine. She was able to get up and walked back to the barn after the scratch. “She was just a little too excited,” he said. “She reared up and lost her footing. I really believed she was going to do well.” Brightwork was checked out back at the barn Saturday night and Ortiz said he will begin looking into options for her next race. “We have to go find a Plan B,” he said. “This all happened in a split second. The day can go from maybe being the greatest day of your life and then it goes to the most disappointing.” Thorpedo Anna Goes To Sunday School In Saratoga Paddock If you were around the paddock before the seventh race on Sunday, you had the chance to get a peek at Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna), the 3-year-old filly who is being targeted to face the boys in the GI Travers Stakes on Aug. 24. Trainer Kenny McPeek schooled his filly in the paddock, something he plans to do for the next two Sundays. He wants to give Thorpedo Anna as much race-day experience as he can as she prepares for the Midsummer Derby. “Look, it's going to be the toughest race of her life,” McPeek said while sitting in his office at his barn in the Annex at the Oklahoma Training Track Sunday morning. “We want her to go over there as relaxed as possible. She is going to need every ounce of energy for that race.” McPeek said that Thorpedo Anna has a high energy level and schooling her in the paddock, he hopes, will calm her down heading into the Travers. The horse did everything else when he blew away the competition in his maiden special weight win on Saturday at Saratoga. That horse, the aptly named Ferocious (Flatter) won his six-furlong race by 7 3/4 lengths, the most visually impressive win by a 2-year-old the Spa has seen in some time. Ferocious and jockey Javier Castellano were timed in 1:09.65. He received a Beyer Speed Figure of 96, the best for a 2-year-old this year. Restrepo and Gustavo Delgado Jr. spearheaded the $1.3 million purchase of Ferocious at the OBS March sale. Restrepo came up with the name. “All the cool horses have great names,” Restrepo said at Gustavo Delgado Sr.'s barn on the Oklahoma Training Track Sunday morning. “You have to have a good, strong name.” It looked good on Sunday as Restrepo and Delgado Jr. received congratulations from well-wishers who came by the barn. Ferocious looked fit as he walked the shedrow, eyeballing those who stopped by. This horse, from the beginning, oh, he was something.” Delgado Jr. said the decision on what comes next for Ferocious will be made when Gustavo Delgado Sr. comes back to Saratoga in the next few days. He was not here for the maiden breaker. The GI Hopeful on Labor Day, closing day of the Saratoga meet, will be considered. “That's on the table,” Delgado Jr. said. “He seems to be fine this morning; a couple of days we will know for sure. Let's see what the real boss says when he gets back here.” He was referring to his father. He didn't think he would see what he saw though. Not that that is a bad thing. Two Sharp romped to an 11 1/4-length 'TDN Rising Star' win in the 61/2-furlong maiden event for fillies and mares aged 3 and up. This was the second career start for Two Sharp, a 3-year-old filly. She certainly lived up to her name. “It's hard to expect that kind of performance,” Bauer said at his barn on the Oklahoma Training Track. “I thought she would win. I told the owner (Ricard Rigney) when he came in that I would be disappointed if she didn't win.” Ridden by Junior Alvarado, Two Sharp was never threatened as she skipped over the fast track to win on the front end in 1:15.81. In her first start, at Churchill Downs on June 28, she finished second as the choice. Bauer had been raving about this filly before the meet started and she met his expectations. “She might be one of the better ones we have ever had,” Bauer said. Now, the question is what comes next? Bauer will let the dust clear for a bit before making a decision on that. He could run in the $300,000 GIII Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sept 21 or the $350,000, GII Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland on Oct. 19. Both races are for 3-year-old fillies and are run at seven furlongs. Another option could be an allowance race at Saratoga on Aug. 31. “We are going to wait and see how some of the other ones that she beat runs back,” Bauer said. “She is a very good doer, very hearty. Saturday's big winners at Saratoga Race Course all came out of their races in good order Sunday. 4-year-old Arthur's Ride (Tapit), provided a timely update to his family tree for his breeders Joe and Helen Barbazon with a win in the GI Whitney Stakes. “Oh, we're just tickled to death,” said Joe Barbazon. “We've got two of his half-sisters and of course this helps their value. We still have his mama here and it's a huge plus for us. It was very exciting, and there was a lot of yelling. Me and the wife were very happy.” With his 'Win and You're In” effort, Arthur's Ride will get the Barbazon's back to the Breeders' Cup for the first time since the they were second with Presious Passion (Royal Anthem) in the GI Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf in 2009. “It's just great. It was a thrill when Presious Passion went to the Breeders' Cup, and I think now we're getting another thrill,” continued Barbazon. “For small people like us, it's just an honor. I'm so happy for Mr. Glassman.” Whitney runner up Crupi (Curlin) posted a career best 106 Beyer Speed Figure Saturday for Todd Pletcher as he finished 2 1/4 lengths behind Arthur's Ride. “He came back good, and I thought he ran super,” said Pletcher. “I thought for a second he was going to still have a shot, but we're very pleased with the effort. It put him over the million-dollar mark yesterday, so it's pretty cool to see him achieve that.” Pletcher noted that the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup may be in play for the 4-year-old. The other Grade I winner on the day, Ways and Means (Practical Joke) found victory in the GI Test Stakes en route to a 98 Beyer Speed Figure for trainer Chad Brown as a homebred for Klaravich Stables. “She broke good, and [jockey Flavien Prat] put in her a good spot and then it was her race to lose from there,” Brown said. “Luckily, she gave a great performance, and everything worked out good. She looks good this morning.” Another on track towards the Breeders' Cup, Ways and Means will look to have one more start between now and the first weekend in November. “We've spaced her races out and she's doing better with less,” Brown said. “We'd like to get her to the [GI Breeders' Cup] Filly and Mare Sprint, and we'll probably run her one more time between now and then, but I'm not sure where or when.” Friday's GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes winner Neat (Consitution) also bounced back well after his win for Rob Atras and had already shipped back to his Belmont Park base. “He came out of the race really good,” said Atras. “We gave him a day and then sent him back down to Belmont where he got ready for that last race. We'll give him a couple of days and then get him back to the track. So far, so good.” Neat could be in line for a next start in the Gun Runner Stakes at Kentucky Downs Sept. 8. “Nothing for sure yet. With him being Kentucky-bred, we will definitely take a look at the Kentucky Downs race on the eighth of September, but that's not for sure yet,” Atras said. Linda Rice, who had the top two finishes in the Fasig-Tipton Lure Stakes Saturday, noted that a bump back into graded company was possible for winner Film Star (Flatter). “We are going to take a look at the [GI] Jockey Club Gold Cup. I opted out of the Whitney with him,” Rice said. “I felt like he was coming off a layoff. He had one race earlier in the meet and I felt like he wasn't up to that yet. Instead, I opted to be an MTO in the Lure and that worked out pretty well for us, but we are going to take a strong look at the Gold Cup.” Rice also confirmed that runner up Pioneering Spirit (American Pharoah) would return to the turf. “Back to the grass with him. I think his best distance is 1 1/8-miles. He won the Bernard Baruch here last year, so we are going to go try and defend that,” she said. The Shortleaf homebred cruised right behind a pair of pacesetters, which included the Insight runner First Class Lady (Uncle Mo). Around the far turn, Quietside began to make some noise fanning three wide and when it was time to accelerate down the lane she took control. There is no shortage of active pedigrees at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, but this year Warrendale Sales has a draft of eight yearlings that includes several particularly eye-catching updates. Hunter Simms, Warrendale's Director of Bloodstock Service, can attest that landing a buzz horse in a yearling's pedigree is exactly what you're hoping for in the weeks leading up to a sale–especially at Saratoga where blacktype already abounds. “People want to buy into young, active families,” he said. “If it's fillies, there is hope that down the road you have some broodmare potential. You might get a half to something or the horse that you purchase at the sale is your graded stakes winner that you could eventually retire. With the colts up here, there are a lot of stallion pedigrees. A lot of end users shop this sale for those types of horses to run on Saturdays, get Grade I wins and eventually end up in their stallion barns.” Warrendale's Hip 57 could fit that bill. The Stonestreet-bred colt is from the first crop of Charlatan and is a half-brother to the talking horse among freshman sires, Complexity. Standing at Airdrie Stud, Complexity currently sits atop the list of first-crop sires, most recently bringing in his first European stakes winner when Black Forest scored in the G2 Markel Richmond Stakes at Goodwood on Aug. 1. At the Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton will be offering a share in Complexity as the first offering in the auction's second session on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The young sire will be represented by just one yearling at the sale in Hip 73, a half-sister to stakes winner Buckeye Magic (Trappe Shot) consigned by Mill Ridge Sales. Meanwhile Warrendale's Charlatan colt is also a half-brother to Grade III winner and 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Valadorna (Curlin). “Complexity is not the only horse in the pedigree,” said Kitty Day, owner of Warrendale Sales. “It's Complexity but you've got some others there too and it's important for people to see that. Stonestreet gave us this Charlatan colt and they also gave us a Street Sense colt [Hip 157]. They're very similar horses with big hips and great walks.” Another Warrendale-consigned yearling with plenty of recent activity is Hip 62, a Nyquist half-sister to rising talent Vahva (Gun Runner). Trained by Cherie DeVaux, the 4-year-old filly Vahva has won four of her last five graded starts, most recently scoring in the GI Derby City Distaff and GIII Chicago Stakes. Out of Grade I-placed Holiday Soiree (Harlan's Holiday), the Nyquist filly who was bred by Rock Ridge Thoroughbreds is also a half-sister to a 2-year-old City of Light filly that Warrendale sold to Belladonna Racing for $400,000 at last year's Keeneland September Sale. “The Charlatan colt and the Nyquist filly are both great physicals,” said Day. “They're big, stretchy horses with beautiful necks and great walks. This filly is a little more compact. I would say she does kind of look like Vahva. We had the City of Light last year and she was a very similar type of horse as this filly. Very strong-hipped. It's all about the physicals.” Simms added that at the Saratoga Sale, there is a unique emphasis on in-person presentation because buyers have so much time to examine horses between the time when inspections starts on Friday and the sale begins on Monday. “You want to bring the right horse here because they have three or four days to pick horses apart-whether it's X-rays, conformation or demeanor,” he explained. “All that stuff, they have the time. So you want to bring the right horse that fits. It's always nerve wracking to bring a horse up here because it's a long way home if you RNA and don't get them sold, so we try to bring the right horse with the right physical and sire power. I think this year's draft represents that across the board.” Also in Warrendale's consignment, Hip 93 is a Maclean's Music colt bred by Ashview Farm from the family of recent GI Bing Crosby Stakes winner The Chosen Vron (Vronsky). Along with the Charlatan colt, their draft includes two others yearlings by first-crop sires in Hip 137, a colt by Raging Bull (FR) who is a half-brother to Grade II victor Andthewinneris (Oscar Performance), and Hip 231, an Essential Quality colt bred by Sandra Sexton & Silver Fern Farm. Junior Alvarado wasn't among this year's class of inductees over the weekend at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. But the 38-year-old veteran put on a mini-clinic across the street at Saratoga Race Course that underscored his versatility as an unheralded rider on an ultra-competitive circuit who consistently coaxes the best out of his mounts, regardless of surface, distance, running style or odds. Although the headline-grabber among his trio of victories was Saturday's decisive wiring of the GI Whitney Stakes aboard the older-horse division's newest phenom, Arthur's Ride (Tapit), Alvarado also orchestrated an impeccably timed, come-from-behind drive to narrowly capture Friday's GII Hall of Fame Stakes with Neat (Constitution). And earlier that afternoon, he helped second-time-starter Two Sharp (Twirling Candy) attain 'TDN Rising Star' status by guiding that 3-year-old filly to an 11 1/4-length tally in a maiden special weight (MSW) sprint. Of those three, only Two Sharp was favored to win. Alvarado let this $925,000 KEESEP filly roll out of the gate on the inside in a 6 1/2-furlong sprint, shrugged off mild early pressure, then allowed her to open up at will on the far turn and kick clear through the lane under her own power. “Absolutely devastating,” was how track announcer Frank Mirahmadi described Two Sharp's victory at 1-2 odds. The only thing that Alvarado might have hampered while keeping his filly under wraps as she sailed solo past the wire was her Beyer Speed Figure, which was assigned as 98 and certainly would have ticked into triple digits had Alvarado nudged her along a little faster. But what would have been the point? Alvarado came from much farther back and had to go after multiple targets on the turf to nail the win with Neat in the Hall of Fame, rating from third-last in a field of eight. That was a change in tactics from when he last rode the 3-year-old colt to a win in the GIII Manila Stakes June 29 at Aqueduct by pressing the pace in a five-horse race. Again tasked with a mile, the 7-2 Neat broke alertly but was rated towards the rear by Alvarado. He edged closer down the backstretch, tipped five wide for the drive, but didn't seem truly in it to win it until the final 50 yards when Neat surged with purpose to wrest control in a three-horse photo. Neat, who sold for $200,000 at both KEENOV and KEESEP, is now 6-for-9 lifetime, adding a Grade II victory to two previous Grade III wins and two other non-graded stakes, all on the grass. He's won the three graded races by a neck, a nose, and three-quarters of a length. He earned a career-best 87 Beyer in the Hall of Fame Stakes. “When I turned for home, I tipped him out and he was so game, he kept fighting and grinding and kept going after the horse in front,” Alvarado said. “Eventually, he put his head in front right in front of the wire. I love this horse. He is my kind of horse–you can feel he has the fire to win.” Arthur's Ride might turn out to be Alvarado's kind of horse, too. Maybe even the one that earns him his best shot yet in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. Alvarado has partnered with this gray for trainer Bill Mott in four straight races since the 4-year-old recovered from a tendon strain that sidelined him from February 2023 until March 2024. This $250,000 KEESEP colt started his career with a pair of seconds in two seven-furlong MSW contests at Saratoga in the summer of 2022 before resurfacing at Gulfstream on Feb. 11, 2023, in a one-turn mile. In that race, Arthur's Ride caught the eye by taking pace pressure at the rail from the 6-5 favorite for most of the race, then clawing back the lead not once, but twice, after losing it in the stretch. That maiden-breaking effort earned him a berth in the TDN Derby Top 12 rankings, but the tendon trouble kept Arthur's Ride out of action until a Mar. 16, 2024, blowout return win at Gulfstream by 7 1/2 lengths in a first-level allowance, another one-turn mile. On the Friday before the 2024 Derby, Arthur's Ride wanted no part of racing in the slop at Churchill Downs, finishing ninth, beaten 23 lengths, in a second-level, one-turn mile allowance. Brought back at the same condition but at 10 furlongs during the GI Belmont Stakes festival at Saratoga June 7, Arthur's Ride rebounded with a 12 3/4-length drubbing that yielded a 111 Beyer. Going into Saturday's Whitney, bettors had to balance Arthur's Ride's sharp comeback race and his affinity for the Spa with the knowledge that he'd once again have to deal with an “off” racetrack and Grade I stakes company for the first time, with several other projected speedsters, including the .95-to-1 favorite National Treasure (Quality Road), drawn to his inside. The wagering public figured just a decimal point under 7-1 was a square mutuel for the prospect of Arthur's Ride out-gunning a fairly deep field from post nine over a muddy, sealed surface. Arthur's Ride strikes a post after winning the GI Whitney Stakes | Tod Marks Alvarado knew that he needed to seize control of the pace from the outset for Arthur's Ride to have his best shot. He outbroke National Treasure, but had to deal with the pesky presence of Skippylongstocking (Exaggerator) before clearing the field. Arthur's Ride cranked out consecutive quarter miles of :23.26, :23.37 and :23.65 while under legit pace pressure, yet turned for home with his ears pricked through a fourth-quarter split in an understandably slower :24.88 while responding to Alvarado's rousing to stay strong on the lead. Arthur's Ride then left some pretty accomplished stakes horses in his wake, finishing up with a final furlong in :13.38 and a nine-furlong clocking of 1:48.54 that translated to a 110 Beyer while 2 1/2 lengths in front. Kentucky Downs will play host to the inaugural FanDuel TV U.S. Open Turf Championships Sept. 7. The event will feature six graded stakes races offering over $2m apiece for Kentucky-breds. In addition to the three Breeders' Cup 'Win and You're In Races', Kentucky Downs will pay the pre-entry and entry fees towards the Breeders' Cup for the winners of three additional stakes should they make a Breeders' Cup field at Del Mar Nov. 1-2. FanDuel TV has also been announced as the title sponsor for the GI FanDuel TV Kentucky Turf Cup, a WAYI for the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf. GSW/MGISP Breaking Lucky (Lookin At Lucky) was euthanized Saturday, Aug. 3 due to complications from colic at the age of 12 according to a release by Blue Star Racing who stood the stallion in Louisiana. Through a five-year stallion career in both Florida and Louisiana, he was the leading second crop sire by winners in Louisiana and the southwest region. “Our entire family is heartbroken,” said Blue Star Racing's Dex Comardelle. “Lucky was such a loved member of our family and local community. We are still trying to process that he is gone. I want to wish a heartfelt thank you to all the breeders, trainers, and owners who have supported him in Florida and in Louisiana during these last five years. We are also very thankful to the vets and surgeons who tried everything they could to save him.” Breaking Lucky, who raced for the partnerships of West Point Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Eric Young, and R.A. Shadwell star Alflaila (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) will target the G1 Juddmonte International Stakes later this month, racing manager Angus Gold confirmed on Sunday. The 5-year-old Owen Burrows trainee won his third race in four starts on the Knavesmire, his second G2 York Stakes last month. Gold said, “He's a real trooper and Owen said that so far, touch wood, he has come out of it well. “We're going to head on now to the International if all stays well before then and I see no reason to not go there. We kept him in training to have a bit of fun with him and you always need these good older horses. “I'm not saying he's going to win it, but I hope he can be competitive at least. Hopefully he can go there and not be too far away. He's a good old stick and the sort of horse you need to give everyone some good days out.” Alflaila also the 2022 editions of the G3 Strensall Stakes and G3 Darley Stakes to his credit. After his 2023 York Stakes triumph, he ran fifth in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes.
