  3. Former Central Districts mare The Entertainer (NZ) (Staphanos) made a brief winter cameo at Oamaru on Sunday, headlining a winning double for Anna Furlong. Successful twice over New Zealand Cup Week in the care of Bill Thurlow, the mare is now based in Christchurch with Furlong, who presented her first-up in track conditions that weren’t entirely to suit the daughter of Staphanos. The market was mindful of her previous heavy track form, closing her at $8.50, but her class prevailed in the Rating 75 contest. Jumping well in the hands of Leah Hemi, The Entertainer settled off the fence outside of race-favourite Sir Sterling and was travelling boldly into the home straight. She hit the lead over Natural Momentum and the pair fought out a tight finish, but The Entertainer had the edge late to score by three-quarters of a length. Furlong was rapt with the mare’s performance but won’t be pressing on through the winter months, instead turning her focus to the spring. “Bill and Grant (Thurlow) had said that she didn’t love a heavy track, she goes pretty well on a soft, but we had her ready and it’s just been wet everywhere,” Furlong said. “We thought she may get away with it, being on the fresher side. “Leah was really pleased with her. She said that she’s a beautiful horse, travelled into the race super, then just plugged up the straight and didn’t enjoy the surface. “We thought we may just spell her for three or four weeks and bring her back for the spring. We’ve been thrown straight into winter tracks and it’s not going to be getting much drier from here on in. “I think she’ll be a really nice horse in the spring, back on top of the ground a bit more.” The Riccarton horsewoman had watched on during Cup Week and was swift to accept Thurlow’s offer to have The Entertainer join her stable. “She’s been with us for about six or seven weeks, Bill had given me a call and asked whether we would be interested in taking her for his brother Grant, who owns her,” she said. “I spoke with Grant and here she is, she’s settled in very well and is a lovely horse to have in the stable. “We’d watched her over Cup Week and she’d been up to use the walker with Bill during that time, so we had a bit of a background on her.” Bred by Erana Shattock, The Entertainer is out of a Stravinsky mare Wahaha, a half-sister to four-time Group One winner Wall Street. Thurlow purchased her for $13,500 through gavelhouse.com, and in 19 starts, she has won four races and over $124,000 in stakes. He also purchased her full-sister Movin Out, who, after placing in the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) in his brother’s care, was sold to Yulong. The filly has since won the Mornington Guineas (1600m), placed in the Gr.2 The Roses (2000m), and was fourth in the Gr.1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) for Chris Waller. Furlong was back in the winner’s circle later in the day, with another former northerner in Irish Miss (Savabeel) saluting second-up in the Lisa Allpress (1600m). The daughter of Savabeel had failed to handle the testing ground when resuming at Wingatui, but she stripped a fit horse over the mile and was able to run down a game Gangsta Granny to score by a head under Akshay Balloo. It was a second career success for the four-year-old, who is raced by Jim Bruford. For Furlong, Sunday’s result capped off an outstanding first season training in a solo capacity, more than doubling her tally from last year with 31 winners. “It’s been brilliant – a little bit of a relief really,” she said. “I’m very lucky to have incredible staff and very good horses that have been sent our way. I’ve got great owners, I wouldn’t be able to do it without them and I think everything’s just come together nicely. “I haven’t got a lot of wet trackers, maybe three or four that will push through the winter, but we’ve got a lot of young horses getting educated in the stable and the main racehorses are starting to come back in for their spring campaigns.” View the full article
  4. Matamata was the setting for Samantha Collett’s first victory in the saddle, and on Sunday, she was back on the board at the course after a three-year stint riding in Australia. After winning three Group Ones in her homeland, Collett relocated to Queensland in October 2021 to ply her trade in Brisbane, where she rode over 150 winners and half a dozen of those at stakes level. She announced in May that she would be returning to New Zealand, and while not in any rush to return to riding, she was a welcome addition to the jockey’s room on Saturday at Te Rapa, where she had four rides across the card. She was similarly sought-after at Matamata on Sunday, where the first of her six rides came aboard an outsider and debutant in Empressive (NZ) (Eminent). A filly by Eminent, Empressive had trialled once heading into the Craigs IP 1400, where she started at a quote of $29, with Born This Swey on top of the market at $3.20. It was evident early in the race that runners were contending with a true Heavy10, but Empressive was handling conditions better than most, travelling well midfield on the rail. She was giving the leaders a decent headstart on the home corner and Horrie dashed clear, but Collett got Empressive out to the centre of the track alongside Show Merican, and the pair began hunting him down. Going right down to the wire, Show Merican was narrowly ahead of Empressive as they passed Horrie, but the filly stuck her head down in the final stride to score by a nose. The victory was Collett’s first for trainer Benjamin King, in her first ride for the local horseman. “I rode my very first winner here, so it seems appropriate to ride by first winner back here, not that I’ve been away for a long time, but it’s good,” Collett said. “Track conditions are testing to say the least, but Benji’s done a great job with this little horse. Obviously having her first start, it’s a little bit unknown as to how these track conditions were going to play out for her, but she travelled really well on the circle for me. “I was mindful of keeping a bit of momentum up without having to stop and start, but once I was able to extricate a position off the fence, she balanced up down the straight and really gave me everything. “She’s still doing things a touch wrong, but she had the audacity to stick her nose out where it mattered.” Due to track conditions, the Matamata meeting had only been confirmed to go ahead on Sunday morning, just as King had hoped. “She’s in the going that she needs, that heavy ground, so I was praying they would run them today,” he said. “Sammy is obviously great, we’re stoked to have her back here, and she did a great job of just keeping her balanced. In the heavy conditions out there, you’ve just got to help them out a little bit, and when you balance them up, let them go. I’m glad she responded. “It’s winter racing, the club does a great job it’s nice and safe, but it is heavy. Everyone knows that, everyone’s in the same boat.” Bred and raced by Alex Leander, Empressive is out of an unraced Redoute’s Choice mare Baheeya. Her other progeny include seven-race winner Savvy Lad, and O’Really Beheeya, who produced Australian Group Two performer Can’t Go Wong. View the full article
  5. Matamata hurdler Squire (NZ) (Savile Row) commenced his jumping career in the best possible fashion at Te Rapa on Saturday, coming out on top in a tight tussle in the Waikato/BOP Owners Association Hurdle (2800m). The son of Savile Row broke through maiden grade just over a year ago in the care of part-owner Karen Fursdon, who entrusted Peter and Jessica Brosnan with the gelding as he switched to racing over fences. After trialling well at Cambridge, Squire stepped out on debut in the hands of Joshua Parker, who restrained the four-year-old back in the second half of the field through the early stages. He was one of a number of first-starters in the race, but the field put on a professional display of jumping as they streamed along the home straight for the first time. The market-elect Sir Maverick and Doctor Iris were on speed throughout and started to dial up the pressure at the 800m, and they had a fight on their hands, with Mr Fahrenheit, Hayate and Squire firing into contention. Mr Fahrenheit hit the lead over the final fence and looked like the winner, but sneaking through the inside was Squire, who powered up at the line to score by a short head. Parker, who had been victorious in last Saturday’s Manawatu Hurdles (2500m) aboard Billy Boy, was complimentary of his charge. “I’m over the moon, it’s great to get a win for Jess and Peter as they’re great supporters of mine,” he said. “He was quite keen to start with and I needed to get a bit of cover, and as soon as he got a bit of daylight, Jess said to me that he got a bit lazy at the 400m last time at Te Aroha. I just kept him up to his work and he didn’t show any sign of slowing up there. “His jumping was pretty darn good, I was very happy with it. We muddled up the last one, but we got over it and got away from it.” An elated Jessica Brosnan indicated the stable had always rated Squire, it was just whether he could put together a complete performance on the day. “He didn’t get it easy today, and we’re just rapt,” she said. “We knew he was capable of it, he just needed to get his act together really. “It’s been a tough couple of weeks in our household, but he did it for us and we’ve put a lot of effort into that horse. I’m so pleased for the owners, one of them hasn’t had a winner in 30 years so there we go, we’ve done it for them. “He’s just learned some tricks over the last couple of years, he just bludges a bit. We said to Josh, you’re going to have to ride him hard, and he did.” Bred by Karen and Kevin Fursdon, who race him alongside the Brosnans and the Squire Syndicate, Squire is out of Lucky Unicorn mare Silk Chardonnay, a winner of six races. 6. By Adam Hamilton It was a perfect start for Team Purdon’s Queensland raid at Albion Park last night. Mark and Nathan Purdon’s two raiders, Oscar Bonavena and Rubira, both won impressively. And Nathan Purdon was quick to add the pair had significant room to improve, too. Old Oscar Bonavena showed all his trademark speed and class when patiently driven by Adam Sanderson. The nine-year-old stalked a hot speed, loomed into the race coming to the final bend and cruised home to win without being extended by 4.4m in a slick 1min55.7sec mile rate for 2138m. Oscar Bonavena will likely have one more lead-up run before the first round of Inter Dominion heats at Albion Park on July 5. If he can build on last night, there’s no doubt the star veteran will be one of the hardest to beat in the $500,000 Inter Dominion trotting final on July 19. Later, Team Purdon’s emerging three-year-old Rubira blazed his way to slick all-the-way win in a 1min52.9sec mile rate for 1660m. It was a significant win because Rubira beat Queensland’s top three-year-old and pre-post Derby favourite Fate Awaits, who had to sit outside the winner. Rubira has the South-East and Redcliffe Derbys before the Group 1 Queensland Derby on July 19. The Kiwi flavour extended last night to a sparkling debut Queensland win for star Kiwi filly Captains Mistress. Now in the care of Grant Dixon, Captains Mistress bolted in by 9.1m against older mares in a 1min53.1sec mile rate for 1660m. Her main target is the Group 1 Queensland Oaks. Dixon had a big night with his NZ Cup runner of last year, Aroda, winning the feature, the Flashing Red Discretionary, a race he ran sixth in last year. It was Dixon quinella with Free Thinker finishing second. Dixon also snared the quinella in the Queensland Sun last night with three-year-old Path To Greatness leading throughout to beat stablemate Charge Ahead. Path To Greatness booked a spot in the $350,000 Group 1 Rising Sun on July 5 through last night’s win. Another key Rising Sun player will be former Kiwi The Janitor, who returned from a break with an arrogant win in race two last night for Chantal Turpin and Pete McMullen. View the full article

SIERRA SILVER (c, 3, Game Winner–Promise Me Silver {GSW, $486,681}, by Silver City) ran third behind 'TDN Rising Star' Goal Oriented (Not This Time) when he was unveiled in Arcadia Apr. 6. The grey served as the runner-up at Santa Anita May 10 before getting slammed at the windows to even-money here. The 3-year-old went to his knees at the break, but was able to recover to run in the third flight up the backstretch. Sierra Silver started to move up behind the pacesetter and around the far turn the colt took control like he was running the point. Confidently handled down the lane, the Bob Baffert trainee leapt from the free throw line to winner's circle. Cheever (Into Mischief) was the runner-up by 4 1/4 lengths. 10. By Mike Love The New Zealand Amateur Drivers championship will conclude today at Addington raceway with two final heats. Currently there are three leaders in the series locked up on seven points in Bruce Hadley, Cheree Wigg and Frank Phelan, while each driver has a mathematical chance to take out the series with only seven points separating all of the drivers. At the opposite end of the table on zero points is Craig Sharpe. However, Sharpe will drive the two warm favourites – the Matt Purvis trained Almighty Clever in Race 1, the Beauty Barry NZ Amateur Driver Champs (Heat 3) Mobile Pace over 1980m while in Race 3, the Braxton Farriers NZ Amateur Driver Champs (Heat 4) Mobile Pace over 1980m he links links up with Stephs Boy for trainer Bob Butt. Sharpe will be looking to finish off the series with a strong late burst having landed these two significant drives. ““They’re both in-form and are both live chances. I haven’t had a lot of luck so far in the series – so it’s good to be lucky enough to land these drives today,” said Sharpe. “They’ve both got good form, but have just got niggly draws.” Almighty Clever was a strong winner in the second heat at Addington on Friday night. Sharpe and Almighty Clever have drawn somewhat awkwardly in five today, though there is some confidence. “I followed it in the run the other night, so he went good to win from where it came from.” Other chances in the event include Gliding High for driver Michael House, and Kowhai Nugget for Colleen Negus. Stephs Boy in the final heat (2.35pm) comes into the race second up after winning at Addington last week. Sharpe and Stephs Boy have drawn the outside of the gate, and will therefore need to work at some stage in the race. “They led pretty easily last week, but I don’t think it’ll come that easy this time. I’ll just have to see what instructions they give me.” Race one gets underway at 1.24pm. View the full article

  12. Barn 28 on the Belmont Park backstretch has been placed under a precautionary 14-day quarantine by the New York Racing Association (NYRA) and New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) until further notice due to a positive case of strangles in the barn. NYRA, the New York State Department of Agriculture and the NYSCG remain in contact should the need arise for further precautionary measures. Barn 28 houses horses trained by George Weaver, Todd Pletcher and Rudy Rodrigruez and the quarantine is effective immediately. The Weaver-conditioned 2-year-old gelding Mo Curls was referred to the Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center on Friday, where he was tested for a number of potential ailments, and a positive strangles result was returned on Saturday afternoon. The horse began immediate treatment at the Medical Center. Following confirmation of a positive strangles test, NYRA and the NYSGC implemented standard infectious disease protocols including restricting access to the horses in the quarantined barn, establishing a 24-hour security watch, mandating regular temperature checks for the horses in that barn and enacting biosecurity measures for all individuals requiring access to Barn 28. During the initial period of quarantine, these horses stabled in Barn 28 will be restricted from entering races and from training with the general horse population. Afebrile/asymptomatic horses stabled in Barn 28 will have isolated training hours on the Belmont Park dirt training track following the close of training for the general horse population at 10:30 a.m. As of Saturday afternoon, no additional febrile horses have been identified. Strangles is a contagious bacterial infection that generally affects a horse's respiratory system and causes symptoms similar to those of strep throat in humans. When properly diagnosed and treated, strangles is not considered a life-threatening infection and horses recover fully. 15. 4th-Santa Anita, $67,000, Alw, 6-14, 3yo, f, 1mT, 1:33.35, fm, 5 3/4 lengths. THOUGHT PROCESS (f, 3, Collected–Creative Thinking {SW-US, SP-Can, $132,592}, by Creative Cause) gave the legendary breeding operation of the late Brereton C. Jones another advertisement a short time before Fondly (Upstart) wired the field in the GIII Delaware Oaks. A debut third over the Del Mar main track last July, the chestnut rattled off three straight turf miles, including the Sept. 7 Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf and this track's GIII Surfer Girl Stakes Oct. 6. A pacesetting ninth to odds-on Lake Victoria (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) as the only other horse in single digits in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 1, she was returning here as the 1-5 jolly and made absolutely no mistakes. Carrying the Jones colors for the comebacker, Thought Process did not have to expend a lot of energy to secure the front and took them along eagerly, but not overly so. Well within herself for the run around the second turn, she gave her four rivals the slip in upper stretch and was punched out hands and heels from Umberto Rispoli to score as miles the best. Thought Process is the lone starter from her stakes-winning dam, who is also represented by a yearling Win Win Win colt and was most recently bred to Roadster. 16. Keeping his run of strong form going, heavily-favored 'TDN Rising Star' Bishops Bay (Uncle Mo) justified his 1-5 odds with a strong effort in the GIII Salvatore Mile at Monmouth Saturday. Never out of the exacta in ten lifetime starts, the son of Uncle Mo missed nearly his entire 4-year-old season but has come back just as good as a 5-year-old, racking up three straight wins including a last-out score on a muddy track at Aqueduct in the GIII Westchester Stakes May 4 which resulted in a career-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure. Trying a sloppy track for the first time but sticking to the Westchester distance of one mile, Bishops Bay drew widest of the scratched-down six-horse field but was away in good order and had enough early speed to stay clear on the outside while settling into a two-wide stalking second. Pacesetter Nelson Avenue (Into Mischief) took that pressure into the backstretch through the opening quarter in :22.81 before Bishops Bay came fully alongside with the pair matching strides in a good rhythm past the half-mile pole. The field stayed tightly bunched (bar a trailing Tuscan Sky {Vino Rosso} who got squeezed back at the break and never factored) into the final quarter-mile but it was clear Bishops Bay was keen to go on with things and opened up an advantage into the stretch that only grew to the wire. The final time for the one mile was 1:37.16 over the slop. “He's such a professional horse,” said winning rider Flavien Prat. “I think he's getting better race after race. He is very nice to be around. I don't think the (sloppy) track affected him. This is his running style. He likes to be on the lead. He's very athletic. He was forwardly placed and very comfortable. He seems to be gaining confidence and he understands what he needs to do when he gets on the track. Some horses show improvement like he has as a 5-year-old. He hasn't really run much before this so he has had room to improve. It's not like he is 5 years old and he has run in a ton of races.” Pedigree Note: One of 112 stakes winners for the greatly-missed Uncle Mo, Bishops Bay is a son of SW/GISP Catch My Drift who joined the WinStar broodmare band on a final bid of $400,000 at FTKNOV in 2015. It proved to be a fruitful purchase for WinStar as Catch My Drift has produced GII Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby winner Catching Freedom (Constitution) along with MSP Strava (Into Mischief), both of whom went on to sell at Keeneland for six figures. Her yet-to-be-named 2-year-old, a filly by Not This Time, sold to Repole Stables for $525,000 at KEESEP last year and is on the work tab at Saratoga. After missing 2024, she reported a full-sister to Bishops Bay this season. #9 BISHOPS BAY ($2.60) and Flavien Prat romp in the $150,000 Salvator Mile (G3) at @MonmouthPark for trainer @bradcoxracing. Not guaranteed to stay this extra 2 1/2 furlongs, she will have to deal with Mandanaba on the scene as that daughter of Mandesha should come into her own tackling middle distances for the first time. Gezora was behind Mandanaba in the G3 Prix Vanteaux but stepped up to land the G2 Prix Saint-Alary last month and has the inside draw, while other notables Better Together, Bedtime Story and Cankoura are in double figures which will hurt their prospects. [Tom Frary]. Sunday, Chantilly, France, post time: 14:05, PRIX DU BOIS LONGINES-G3, €80,000, 2yo, 6fT Field: Moojeed (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Kalkara (Fr) (Zelzal {Fr}), Imperial Me Cen (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), Meelaf (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}), Ali Shuffle (GB) (A'Ali {Ire}). TDN Verdict: This stepping stone to the G2 Prix Robert Papin went the way of subsequent Robert Papin hero and G1 Prix Morny fourth Arabie last term. His trainer Karl Burke, also triumphant with Little Kim in 2018, once again ships in two for this straight dash. Nick Bradley Racing's unbeaten-in-three Tattersalls October Book 2 graduate Ali Shuffle lines up with a Goffs London Sale entry and returns off a one-length success in Chester's storied Lily Agnes last month. She will become the first black-type runner for her Newsells Park Stud-based freshman sire. Stablemate Meelaf, who sports the Arabie silks of Mohamed Saeed Al Shehhi, followed up a Musselburgh maiden score with a neck second in Beverley's former stakes-grade Hilary Needler Trophy three weeks ago. Yeguada Centurion's Henri Devin-trained Listed Prix des Reves d'Or victor Imperial Me Cen leads the home defence while compatriots Moojeed and Kalkara have yet to shed maiden status after two starts each. [Sean Cronin]. Sunday, Chantilly, France, post time: 18:00, PRIX DU LYS LONGINES-G3, €80,000, 3yo, 12fT Field: Surabad (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), Rafale Design (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Ephesus (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), Hotheaded (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Lakota Beau (Fr) (Sioux Nation), Duty (Fr) (Romanised {Ire}), Golden Weaver (Fr) (Romanised {Ire}), Croquis (Ire) (Pinatubo {Ire}), Oracle (Fr) (Too Darn Hot {GB}). TDN Verdict: The modern incarnation of this stamina-sapping test is a launchpad to next month's G1 Grand Prix de Paris with the lightly campaigned pair Flintshire and Erupt completing the double in recent years. Flintshire's wizard Andre Fabre has a race-record 15 wins already in the books and sends forth Godolphin's once-raced Hotheaded, who was green but impressive when bounding to a wide-margin debut victory tackling this trip at Saint-Cloud last month, and Alain and Gerard Wertheimer's twice-raced Saint-Cloud maiden scorer and supplementary entry Oracle. Black-type form is plentiful among the opposition and other leading lights include the Yann Barberot-conditioned G3 Prix Hocquart winner Rafale Design and Aga Khan Studs homebred Surabad, a Francis Graffard trainee who subdued subsequent Listed Derby du Languedoc victor Croquis, another Wertheimer representative, in April's Listed Prix de l'Avre over 12 furlongs at ParisLongchamp. [Sean Cronin]. Sunday, Chantilly, France, post time: 18:35, PRIX BERTRAND DU BREUIL LONGINES-G3, €80,000, 3yo/up, 8fT Field: Fort Payne (Fr) (Rio De La Plata), Marhaba Ya Sanafi (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), Zabiari (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Ferrari Fever (Fr) (Panis), Vertbrois (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Fast Raaj (Fr) (Iffraaj {GB}), Point Lynas (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), Make Me King (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), The Wasp (Fr) (Whipper). TDN Verdict: Jaber Abdullah's 2023 G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero and G1 Prix du Jockey Club third Marhaba Ya Sanafi has failed to win any of seven stakes starts since annexing this last year and may once again yield to Godolphin's Andre Fabre-conditioned G2 Prix du Muguet second Vertbois, who was 3/4-of-a-length too good for the Andreas Schutz trainee in March's Listed Prix Altipan. The in-form Francis Graffard yard has yet to strike in this and is represented here by Aga Khan Studs homebred Zabiari. The 2023 Prix des Chenes victor, then under the stewardship of Jean-Claude Rouget, ran fifth behind Rosallion in that year's G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, but was on the shelf for three days shy of one year before notching wins for his new stable at Saint-Cloud in April and over this strip last month. Ed Bethell nominee Point Lynas and Wathnan Racing's 2024 G3 Prix Quincey victor Make Me King were separated by 3/4-of-a-length when second and third in Doha's $500,000 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cup in February and both hold valid claims in a typically open renewal. [Sean Cronin]. Sunday, Bro Park, Sweden, post time: 13:54, STOCKHOLMS STORA PRIS-G3, SKr850,000, 3yo/up, 8 3/4fT Field: Redirect (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}), Admiral De Vega (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Falkor (Swe), (Barocci {Jpn}), Silver Legend (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Mozart (Den) (Le Havre {Ire}), Havandi (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), Good Fortune (Den) (Appel Au Maitre {Fr}), King David (Den) (Elusive City), Seneschal (Swe) (Appel Au Maitre {Fr}), Seakine (Fr) (Seahenge). TDN Verdict: Supported by two Listed heats, this is the stakes highlight on Sweden's 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas undercard. TDN Rising Star Hans Andersen, winner of 2023's G3 Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial, made little impact in eight Group 1 outings for Ballydoyle and continued on a familiar path for new connections this year, running unplaced in four Meydan starts earlier in the campaign. He made a Scandinavian breakthrough in April's Listed Danish Jockey Club Cup at his local Klampenborg track, but finished off the board when fifth tackling the dirt in Jagersro's Listed Pramms Memorial last month. Pramms Memorial fourth Falkor reopposes while last term's winner Good Fortune, 2023 winner Admiral De Vega and 2022 winner King David are all back for more. The latter is one of three raiders from Denmark and set fair for his sixth attempt at Sweden's first Group 3 contest of the season. [Sean Cronin]. 20. 'TDN Rising Star' Admiral Dennis (c, 3, Constitution–Gulf Coast, by Union Rags), a last-out rallying fourth in the GI Blue Grass S. Apr. 8, sat much closer to the pace than usual and drew off in the stretch to win by four lengths at odds of 2-1 in Saturday's inaugural running of the Delaware Derby. Barbadian Runner (Barbados) was second; Kentucky Outlaw (Outwork) was third. The final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:43.57. Lifetime Record: 7-3-0-1. Sales history: $425,000 yrl '23 KEESEP. 22. A colt from the initial crop of runners from the Airdrie Stud-based one-time 'TDN Rising Star' Beau Liam (Liam's Map) covered a quarter-mile in :20 1/5 during Saturday's fifth and final breeze show ahead of next week's OBS June 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale. The Mar. 20 foal becomes the first horse to achieve that particular clocking since a pair accomplished the feat at last year's OBS April Sale. One of those was Cash Call (McKinzie), recent winner of the GIII Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita. Hip 829 was bred in Kentucky by La Ciega LLC and fetched $12,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October Sale before changing hands for $3,000 during the Fasig-Tipton December Digital Sale. The bay is consigned to the June Sale by Omar Ramirez Bloodstock, agent, who also sent out a Cloud Computing filly to breeze a co-fastest quarter-mile in :20 4/5 during Wednesday's breeze show. “I told Jimbo Gladwell [of Top Line Sales] this morning 'I've got a good one coming out'”, Ramirez laughed. “I was expecting 20 and 3, 20 and 4 and if I was really lucky, 20 and 2. But 20 and 1, that's amazing. He's just a great colt. I knew the work was going to be good. I knew he was going to be the bullet, whatever the bullet was today. “One of my riders told me to send this horse a quarter because he keeps going, he's not going to stop. He's ready to run.” Ramirez brings a 28-strong consignment into next week's sale and is bullish on his horses' chances over the course of the two-day auction. “This colt is just a special horse. He does everything naturally,” said Ramirez. “He just goes over there and does his thing. I've had a great under-tack show overall. All my babies responded well and have come back good and are looking good.” A pair of juveniles shared the one-furlong bullet Saturday, each breezing :9 4/5. Hip 754 (breeze video) is a May-foaled filly by the promising Yaupon (Uncle Mo) that is part of the draft of Keiber Rengifo's Golden Rock Thoroughbreds, agent. A daughter of the stakes-placed Shine Softly (Aldebaran), the bay is a half-sister to Busanda Stakes victress The Grass Is Blue (Broken Vow) and her second dam, Eclipse Award winner Soaring Softly (Kris S.), produced six winners, including GSW Manitoulin (Awesome Again). Leinster is off to a fast start with his first runners, including the Royal Ascot-bound Lennilu, and the stallion's hip 831 (breeze video) was the other bullet worker going an eighth of a mile on Saturday. Steve Venosa's S G V Thoroughbreds consigns the Florida-bred daughter of Sweetsweetsweet (Concord Point), a half-sister to 2-year-old stakes winner Concealedwithakiss (Political Force). The OBS June Sale takes place next Tuesday and Wednesday, June 17 and 18 in Central Florida. For the full catalogue and under-tack results, visit www.obssales.com. 23. Taken down after the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, Shes Perfect (Sioux Nation) has a second bite of the cherry on Sunday in Chantilly's G1 Prix de Diane Longines. Whether or not the pride and joy of the Basher Watts Racing Club would have mastered Zarigana in the ParisLongchamp Classic had she stayed on a true line is a matter of conjecture, but we know after her two fights with that Aga Khan Studs blueblood this term that she belongs in the top echelon of her generation. While this 10 1/2-furlong test is far less likely to suit her on pedigree than her chief rival Mandanaba (Ghaiyyath), trainer Charlie Fellowes is hopeful she has the requisite staying power. Early evidence of Sioux Nation's progeny points to middle distances not being so much of a problem as expected provided the damsire injects it and she has the all-important Galileo factor on that side. “This has been the plan pretty much since the French Guineas and we had the choice between this or the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, but I always thought she would stay at least 10 furlongs and we felt this was the right time to try it,” he said. “She's in good order and hasn't missed a beat since Longchamp and she's travelled over well. They've had a bit of rain which is welcome and will hopefully take the sting out of the ground, which is ideal.” “It's a good race and there is plenty in there to beat. Mandanaba ran a screamer in the Guineas and on pedigree should have no problem staying further,” he added. “Aidan has two in there who always have to be respected, so it is no walk over by any stretch of the imagination. But we're really looking forward to seeing her run and hopefully she can go over there and do the business.” Mandanaba was a length behind the front pair in the Pouliches, which in every book is a highly creditable effort given her leaning towards at least a mile and a half on pedigree. Potentially a stayer with lethal speed, the daughter of Mandesha had already won the nine-furlong G3 Prix Vanteaux and will be able to run at a more suitable tempo over this extra trip. Nemone Routh echoed that reasoning. “Her breeding would suggest she'll be better over a mile and a quarter,” the manager for the Aga Khan Studs said of the key member of a formidable Francis-Henri Graffard trio. “We hesitated for a long time over whether to run in the Prix Saint-Alary or put her in the Group 1 Classic over a mile, because it is a Classic and you don't get many opportunities when the horse is well to run at that level in that type of race. She ran a great race, it was only her third run and she got left a little bit on her own on the inside and she was very game.” “She's a very genuine filly who shows quite a lot of speed early in her races and we think she's a filly who likes good, fast ground,” she added. “She's not a big filly, but she's quite strong and it's a nice story in that she's the last foal of her dam Mandesha, who was retired after she foaled her. Mandesha was a champion for Princess Zahra who won three Group 1s over a mile, a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half, which is quite a rare achievement and it's nice to find some of her quality in her last foal.” Graffard has another out of a star mare in Germance, White Birch Farm's Gezora (Almanzor) was third in the Vanteaux and stepped up to win the G2 Prix Saint-Alary last month and has the inside draw, which is often a boon here. Having also won the Saint-Alary in its former guise as a Group 1, Germance was second to Confidential Lady in the 2006 renewal of this prize so it would be fitting if Gezora was able to get her top-level success and avenge that defeat. The stable's Listed Prix Finlande winner Cankoura (Persian King) has something to do to get to the level of Gezora and Mandanaba and has a wide draw to hinder here. Also posted on the outer are the Pouliches fifth and sixth Better Together (Oasis Dream) and sixth Bedtime Story (Frankel), with the latter still a work in progress having given too much of herself with that electric display in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. Over middle distances for the first time, she will have ample time to ease into proceedings and the key will be how she settles throughout the early stages. Floats Like A Butterfly, Stings Like A Bee Chantilly's action begins with the G3 Prix du Bois Longines for the 2-year-olds over six furlongs, where A'Ali's flagbearer Ali Shuffle looks to stay in the winning groove for Nick Bradley Racing and Karl Burke. Successful twice since 2018, he also saddles another filly in Iffraaj's Meelaf and the chances are that they will be too streetwise for the Listed Prix des Reves d'Or winner Imperial Me Cen (Mehmas) as so often seems the case when the English come for these French sprint juvenile tests. In the 12-furlong G3 Prix du Lys Longines, the Listed Prix de l'Avre winner Surabad (Bated Breath) meets the G3 Prix Hocquart scorer Rafale Design (Starspangledbanner). By the time Surabad's progressive stablemate Zabiari (Wootton Bassett) takes aim at the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil Longines over a mile, this could be yet another banner day for the Graffard stable. 25. Take Charge Milady (f, 3, Take Charge Indy–Price too High, by Scat Daddy) defeated returning champion Immersive (Nyquist) by a neck in a thrilling renewal of Saturday's Monomoy Girl S. at Churchill Downs. The latter, sidelined due to bone bruising and off as the 2-5 favorite in a scratched-down field of four, was making her first start since capping a four-for-four season in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar. Take Charge Milady, winner of the Martha Washington S., second in the GI Ashland S. and 12th in the GI Kentucky Oaks, raced within striking distance in an outside third as Immersive tracked in an inside second through an opening quarter in :23.32. Take Charge Milady moved into second as Immersive raced in tight quarters on the far turn. Take Charge Milady revved up three wide as Immersive bounced off the tiring pacesetter Anna's Promise (Promises Fulfilled) at the top of the stretch. Take Charge Milady and Immersive put on a show from there with the former battling by after a long drive to deliver at odds of 4-1. The final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:43.17.
