Isle Of Jura (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) stormed to a memorable Hardwicke victory on Saturday to provide trainer George Scott and rider Callum Shepherd with a breakthrough Royal Ascot success. The win was a timely one for Shepherd, who endured a hammer blow when losing the ride aboard Ambiente Friendly (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who would go on to finish second in the Derby. Naturally, Shepherd was overcome with emotion after crossing the winning line in front aboard Isle Of Jura, who is owned by Bahrain's Victorious Racing and racked up a series of wins in that country over the winter. “With all the emotions coming out I'm going to struggle to compose myself,” Shepherd told ITV Racing after bagging his first Ascot win at the 66th attempt. The rider added, “He's been such a special horse to George and the team and for Sheikh Nasser to be here having enjoyed all this success in Bahrain, he's a very good horse and he just never lets us down. The last six weeks have been quite difficult and that just feels really special.” Victorious Racing were tasting success for the second time this week after Pledgeofallegiance (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) won the Ascot Stakes on Tuesday for trainer Sir Mark Prescott and rider Luke Morris. But Isle Of Jura was arguably even more important given he raced with great distinction in Bahrain all throughout the winter and went some way to highlighting the expanding programme in that country. Bedtime Story Or Fairy Godmother? Wow. If anyone was feeling sleepy coming into the final day of what has been a mammoth week of racing, Bedtime Story (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) did her bit to awaken those people from their slumber. What she did in the Chesham was seriously impressive. Juveniles are not supposed to win races of that nature by close to double figures. However, did she deserve to usurp her stablemate Fairy Godmother (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), who was arguably just as impressive in overcoming a troubled passage in Friday's Albany, for next year's 1,000 Guineas? The bookmakers seem to think so and have installed Bedtime Story as the clear number one for Aidan O'Brien for next year's Classic at odds of 11-4. You can get 6-1 in places about Fairy Godmother. Yes, Bedtime Story was extremely impressive but it shouldn't be lost what Fairy Godmother achieved 24 hours previously. Those odds seem a little reactionary. Good Old Dark Angel Enjoys Week To Remember Dark Angel (Ire) did his bit to remind people just how good he is this week. After starting the meeting with a bang with Charyn (Ire) in the Queen Anne, the Yeomanstown Stud resident proved he can get top-class horses at every discipline when Khaadem (Ire) made it back-to-back victories in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes. It's been a week to remember for the stallion. Quality Of The Older Sprinters A Worry It must be said, however, that the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes lacked strength in depth. Given Tuesday's King Charles III Stakes went for export with Asfoora (Aus) (Flying Artie {Aus}) beating the best of the European sprinters, the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes didn't do anything to change the opinion that we are lacking a top-class older sprinter in this jurisdiction. You'd have to fancy Commonwealth Cup winner Inisherin (GB) (Shamardal) in the July Cup, should that be the path connections chart. Divine Intervention Hand Of God (GB) (Churchill {Ire}), named after that infamous Diego Maradona goal against England in the World Cup quarter-final 38 years ago to the day, sprouted wings to take the Golden Gates Stakes. It came as some deserved compensation for owner Mohammed Jaber, whose King's Gambit (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) was an unlucky loser earlier in the week. But Hand Of God was by far the best horse in the Golden Gate and was by no means in need of divine intervention to hit the back of the net. Unfortunately, having sat through a couple of sleep-inducing performances by Gareth Southgate's boys, the same cannot be said for England in the Euros. They'll need every bit of help they can get! Haatem An Ideal Type For The Breeders' Cup How good was Haatem (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}) in the Jersey Stakes? Reverting in trip and running under the penalty proved no barrier to the classy colt registering a fourth success for Wathnan Racing this week and paying a handsome compliment to his Irish 2,000 Guineas conqueror and stablemate Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}). Okay, Wathnan clearly shelled out a lot of money to buy Haatem in the build-up to the Jersey–probably a couple of million at least–but lest we forget that Haatem was initially bought for 27,000gns as a yearling by Peter and Ross Doyle. These horses are out there. Haatem would look an obvious type to go for the Breeders' Cup Turf Mile, which would be huge for the Irish National Stud, whose young stallion Phoenix Of Spain continues to go from strength to strength. Credit Where It's Due We are starting to repeat ourselves here, but what Wathnan Racing achieved in returning to the winner's enclosure four times this week has to be celebrated. For context, Godolphin managed just one winner all week while Amo Racing left Ascot empty-handed. Tough Week For The Irish Don't be fooled by Aidan O'Brien running riot and claiming yet another leading trainer award at the royal meeting, because this week has been extremely tough for the raiding party. Outside of Aidan, only his sons Donnacha and Joseph along with Willie Mullins managed to bag themselves a winner apiece. 1st-Laurel, $46,060, Msw, 6-22, 2yo, f, 5f, 1:00.28, ft, 1 1/4 lengths. SHAREDASHENANIGANS (f, 2, Into Mischief–Sharing {GISW-USA, G1SP-Eng, $1,092,751}, by Speightstown), the first foal out of 2019 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner and 2020 G1 Coronation Stakes runner-up Sharing, was favored at 3-5 while facing four rivals on debut. Her worktab included a four-furlong bullet out of the gate in :48 (1/32) at Graham Motion's Fair Hill base May 24. She pressed the top two from an outside third and rolled up three deep on the far turn. The bay gained a narrow advantage as they straightened for home and dug down nicely in the stretch to hold Sail Theseven Seas (Street Sense) safe by 1 1/4 lengths. Sharing, a daughter of 2010 GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf heroine Shared Account, produced a colt by Into Mischief in 2023 and a filly by Tapit in 2024. Champion 2-year-old colt and 'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light) worked a half-mile in :51 flat Friday for trainer Todd Pletcher over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga in preparation for a start in the GI NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes July 20 at Monmouth Park. Joining the GI Curlin Florida Derby winner on the work tab Friday was Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables recent GII Suburban Stakes winner Crupi (Curlin), who covered a half-mile in :52.85 in company with Talk of the Nation (Quality Road). “Both works were probably better than the times suggest – finished up well and galloped out strongly,” said Pletcher. He added that both Fierceness and fellow 'Rising Star' GI Belmont Stakes runner-up Mindframe (Constiution) are likely to start in the Haskell. “I'll talk to Mike [Repole] but right now we're pointing Fierceness and Mindframe towards the Haskell.” Pletcher said Mindframe has exited the Belmont Stakes in good order. “He's been galloping well this week. He looks good and his overall condition is excellent coming out of the race. We'll look for a breeze next weekend.” Pletcher won Monmouth's local prep for the Haskell last weekend with Spendthrift Farm's Tuscan Sky (Vino Rosso), who captured the Pegasus Stakes by 6 3/4 lengths over Domestic Product (Practical Joke). The top two Pegasus finishers received free entry and start fees for the Haskell. Pletcher noted that Centennial Farms' Antiquarian (Preservationist), who ran fifth in the Belmont Stakes, is enjoying a freshening, and further said that he will re-group with Repole Stable's Belmont Stakes sixth-place finisher Protective (Medaglia d'Oro) and target a maiden event at the Spa. Pletcher indicated that Crupi is pointing to the GII Brooklyn Invitational July 5, which could serve as a bridge to the “Win And You're In” GI Whitney Stakes August 3 at Saratoga. If Crupi makes the Whitney, he is likely to meet stablemate Bright Future (Curlin), who returned from a seven-month layoff to capture the GIII Salvator Mile last weekend at Monmouth. “We were encouraged the way [Bright Future] had been training leading up to [the Salvator Mile], but it's always great to see them come back and perform well,” Pletcher added. “Hopefully, it's the start of a good summer and fall campaign for him.” The post Pletcher Points Fierceness, Mindframe Towards Haskell appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Wathnan Racing's dual Classic-placed acquisition Haatem (Ire) (Phoenix Of Spain {Ire}–Hard Walnut {Ire}, by Cape Cross {Ire}) went postward for Saturday's G3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot lumbered with a three-pound Group 3 penalty and defied that impost in game fashion to register a narrow victory in the seven-furlong test. Haatem was swiftly into stride and settled into a comfortable rhythm slipstreaming fellow Wathnan contender Native American (Ire) (Sioux Nation) in a prominent fourth from the outset. Tanking forward on the bridle to lead approaching the quarter-mile pole, the 7-2 second favourite came under pressure as threats loomed with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and was driven out to bravely hold the late surge of Frankel's half-brother Kikkuli (GB) (Kingman {GB}) by a short-head. Johnny Murtagh trainee and 80-1 outsider Chicago Critic (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) recorded a career best of his own and finished one length adrift in third. Pedigree Notes Haatem is the fifth of six foals and one of three scorers out of a dual-winning half-sister to G3 Premio Carlo Vittadini and G3 Premio del Giubileo runner-up Father Frost (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) and Listed Prix Pelleas, Listed Doncaster Mile and Listed Foundation Stakes placegetter Born To Be Alive (Ire) (Born To Sea {Ire}). His second dam Yaria (Ire) (Danehill), herself a daughter of G1 Phoenix Stakes runner-up Yara (Ire) (Sri Pekan), is a winning sibling of dual stakes scorer Emirates Gold (Ire) (Royal Applause {GB}), Listed Prix Melisande victrix Yarastar (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and the stakes-placed Yario (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Swooping to record back-to-back successes in Saturday's G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, Fitri Hay's Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–White Daffodil {Ire}, by Footstepsinthesand {GB}) proved himself a true horses-for-courses sprinter under Oisin Murphy. Let go at 80-1 getting the full Jamie Spencer treatment 12 months ago, the Charlie Hills-trained 8-year-old who was 14-1 this time was always travelling like the winner in behind and when finally given the command swamped Swingalong (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) inside the final furlong for a half-length win. Mill Stream (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) was 1 1/4 lengths behind in third, with the 3-1 favourite Believing (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) a further length back in fourth. A record-breaker! KHAADEM gallantly lands The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes under Oisin Murphy. It is the first time since 1959 that a horse has won the race back-to-back, and the first time ever an eight-year-old has claimed victory! Victorious Racing's Isle Of Jura (GB) (New Approach {Ire}–Falls Of Lora {Ire}, by Street Cry {Ire}), who enjoyed a lucrative winter campaign snagging four of five starts in Bahrain, made a winning European comeback in last month's Listed Festival Stakes and stepped forward to secure an emotional victory for rider Callum Shepherd in Saturday's G2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot. The 16-1 chance was positioned fifth through the initial strides and improved one spot after the opening exchanges of this 12-furlong contest. Easing closer on the home turn and moving into second passing the quarter-mile marker, he seized control approaching the final furlong and was driven clear to secure a career best on pattern-race debut. Pedigree Notes Isle Of Jura, who becomes the 39th pattern-race winner for his sire, is the fifth of eight foals and one of six scorers from as many runners produced by G3 UAE Oaks victrix Falls Of Lora (Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}), herself a daughter of stakes-winning G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches second Firth Of Lorne (Ire) (Danehill). The February-foaled bay is a full-brother to four-time Australian Group 1 winner Cascadian (GB) and kin to GI Summer Stakes victor Albahr (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a 2-year-old colt by Night Of Thunder (Ire) and a yearling colt by Dubawi (Ire). Firth Of Lorne's quintet of black-type performers also includes GI Breeders' Cup Mile, GI Woodbine Mile and GI Maker's Mark Mile hero Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and stakes-winning G1 St James's Palace Stakes runner-up Latharnach (Iffraaj {GB}). Turning the Listed Chesham Stakes into her own Royal Ascot procession on Saturday, Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Bedtime Story (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Mecca's Angel {Ire}, by Dark Angel {Ire}) recorded the widest-margin win of the week by some way to enter the 2025 Classic conversation. Content to follow the leaders in the group racing up the centre, the 11-8 favourite who had won a Leopardstown maiden earlier this month was let loose by Ryan Moore two out and surged clear for an emphatic 9 1/2-length success. Pentle Bay (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) was next, with Brian (Ire) (Shaman {Ire}) half a length back in third. “She's a very good filly,” Moore said. “She travelled very easily and they've gone too slow for her really. When I moved the race was over very quickly.” Impressive! Kiwi import Luvnwar (NZ) (War Decree) scored her first stakes victory when landing the Listed Amelia Park-Belmont Guineas (1600m) at Belmont on Saturday, with a length and a half to spare over runner-up Petrouchka (More Than Ready). Prepared by Michael Grantham, Luvnwar had previously won over 1400m at Belmont, having finished runner-up on her Australian debut over 1200m. The daughter of War Decree is raced by Peters Investments Pty Ltd and was purchased privately out of New Zealand by Liam Peters Byerley Bloodstock on behalf of his grandfather Bob, after finishing third in the Gr.3 Barneswood Farms Stakes (1400m) for trainer Terri Rae in October last year. In an open contest, Luvnwar was sent out $4.40 equal favourite and flew the gates from barrier 3 under jockey Patrick Carbery before finding the box seat in third. Angled into the clear soon after straightening, Luvwar found the front a shade too early but was strong to the line as she comfortably saw out the mile. “She does everything right, the way she jumps and puts herself into position is good and we were lucky with the barrier (3). She got a nice run through and it was good to see her get the 1600m,” Bob Peters said. “When he was well into the straight, he still hadn’t moved on her and I thought ‘that’s good’ but then she hit the front probably a little too soon and I saw those others coming down the outside but she fought on well, so that was good to see.” Trainer Michael Grantham enjoyed a treble on the day, including a double in the Peters silks. “It has taken us a while to learn what is going on and the different tracks Michael has got, but he listens and he does a good job,” Peters said. The prominent owner was pleased for his grandson Liam who did the deal on the filly he identified in New Zealand’s South Island. “He is the one who found this horse. I didn’t know anything about it and he came to me with it and it was good to see,” Peters said. “A lot of people think he only acts for me, but he can act for other people as well. That’s what his job is, so I am quite happy if they want to leave him to find them for me.” By Inglewood Stud stallion War Decree, who has enjoyed plenty of headlines care of his Queensland Derby-winning son Warmonger (NZ), Luvnwar is out of the Pins mare Pretty Women. The filly is a half-sister to Listed winner Chokito (NZ) (Vespa) and was originally purchased by Sam and Hana Beatson’s Riversley Park for $22,500 at the 2022 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 2 Sale. Luvnwar has now won three of her six career starts with a further two placings. View the full article

The Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained Crosshaven (Smart Missile) recorded the seventh win of his career after closing late to land the Country Achiever Shane Fliedner (1100m) at Flemington on Saturday. The son of Smart Missile was patiently handled by Luke Currie before navigating a path closest to the fence, scoring his first win since his triumph in the Gr.3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1400m) back in November 2022. With the rail out 11 metres and the fresher ground out wide, Crosshaven defied his inside draw to score at odds of $17. The Karaka graduate has now advanced his career earnings to A$1,118,103, with the Lindsay Park team showing their training nous to help the six-year-old gelding get back to the winner’s circle. “Ben (Hayes) said he gave him a jump this morning and got his mind on the job,” Currie said. “He jumped okay, and I was happy to just let that speed go, thinking that everything would come out (towards the outside fence). “I just held him up until the furlong and then he found clear air and he burst through and was strong. “If you end up going back to the inside, there is plenty of room there and I thought the track is a bit more even than it looks like it is racing but he has done a good job to go back to the inside and win from there.” Bred by Auckland-based Daniel Nakhle, the five-year-old gelding is one of five winners from as many to race out the Group Two winner Irish Colleen (NZ) (Shinko King) , who Nakhle had purchased for just $8,500 at the 2005 NZB National Weanling Sale and enjoyed racing with father Elias. Crosshaven is closely related to Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) winner Crocetti (NZ) (Zacinto), who is out of his O’Reilly half-sister Gracehill (NZ). An $80,000 yearling graduate of Haunui Farm’s 2019 Karaka Book 1 draft, Crosshaven was initially passed in before selling to Lindsay Park with Nakhle retaining a share. Now the winner of seven of his 44 starts, Crosshaven has also been placed on nine occasions. View the full article

The Listed Team Wealleans Tauranga Classic (1600m) produced one of the most popular winners in its 44-year history with Saturday’s black-type breakthrough by local mare Casino Princess (NZ) (Casino Prince). The highly talented five-year-old is trained at the track by the 92-year-old Cliff Goss, who also shares ownership with his close friend Darryl Heaphy. Saturday’s $80,000 fillies and mares’ feature was the first black-type appearance for Casino Princess and clearly her toughest test yet. She had risen through the grades with four wins and four placings in her promising 10-start career, culminating in a last-start Rating 75 success over 1560m at Rotorua on May 11. Casino Princess was ridden for the first time on Saturday by Jasmine Fawcett, who was well aware that the Tauranga track was favouring horses racing on or near the lead and close to the inside rail. Fawcett saw renowned front-runner Wessex (NZ) (Turn Me Loose) as the biggest danger under that pattern, so she drove Casino Princess forward from her wide draw of gate 10. Casino Princess took up a position on the outside of Wessex by the time the field turned out of the back straight, and she kept that rival squarely in her sights coming down the side of the track. Fawcett made her move just before the home turn, sprinting past Wessex and taking a clear lead as she swung into the straight. Casino Princess quickened smartly and shot clear. The favourite Malt Time (Adelaide) produced a strong late run from well back in the field and chased bravely down the straight, but Casino Princess was well out of reach and swept to victory by two and a half lengths. Malt Time edged out Wessex for second by a long head, with more than four lengths back to the rest of the field. “I was a bit concerned about Wessex getting too far in front on this track today, so I decided to take the initiative and go forward to sit outside her,” Fawcett said. “Cliff Goss sounded pretty confident when I spoke to him before the race, so I knew that she would be right in it if I could get her the right run. “She’s probably one of the most beautiful fillies I’ve ever ridden and she won very well today.” Casino Princess has now had 11 starts for five wins, four placings and $110,610 in prize-money. The daughter of Casino Prince is providing another shot at the big-race spotlight for Goss, whose rapid rise through the ranks with the super-talented Gold Watch (NZ) (Swiss Ace) was cruelly cut short by his breakdown in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) in January of 2022. It has not always been smooth sailing either with Casino Princess, who won three of her first four starts but then bled last spring and was off the scene for almost six months. “That was a beautiful win today,” Goss said. “Especially winning a stakes race – you know, they’re very hard to win. But I suppose she was a horse that could do it, and she proved it today. “Jasmine was caught a bit wide from that draw and had to go forward, but that didn’t worry us at all. “We were very happy with her going into this race, despite the (42-day) gap between runs. She gallops once a week on a Wednesday, and I certainly thought her gallop on Wednesday of this week was a winning gallop. “It’s so important to get black-type for a filly or mare, so this is very good.” View the full article

Tauranga horseman Antony Fuller has been chasing a victory in the Seeka Kiwifruit Cup (2100m) for several years, and his talented stayer Khan Hunter (NZ) (Mongolian Khan) got the job done in style on Saturday at his home course. A son of Mongolian Khan, Khan Hunter earned his breakthrough success in a maiden highweight over 2100m in March 2022, and he has come a long way since that victory highlighted by a standout season this term. He won a competitive Dunstan Horsefeeds Stayers’ Championship Qualifier (2100m) in November, before finishing a narrow second to Trust In You (NZ) (Sweynesse) in the Gr.3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m) and fourth in the Gr.2 Avondale Cup (2400m) through the summer period. Fuller spelled the six-year-old after he finished 13th in the Gr.2 Auckland Cup (3200m), but brought him back into work with designs on winning Saturday’s race, where he flew slightly under the radar rated a $7.80 fourth-favourite. In the hands of apprentice jockey Maria Sanson who brought his topweight down to 57kg, Khan Hunter bounced the gates and was sent straight to the front, while $2.90 race-favourite Blue Sky At Night (NZ) (Shamexpress) sat just worse than midfield in fifth. Khan Hunter travelled strongly along the back straight and his lead began to extend at the 800m, opening up the field who began to chase turning for home. The main danger in Blue Sky At Night loomed up strongly nearing the 300m, but Khan Hunter still had plenty left in the tank as he powered away under little pressure by 3 ¾ lengths. Fuller, who has twice run fourth in the Kiwifruit Cup with former Auckland Cup winner Roger That (NZ) (Shinko King), was delighted to pick up the local feature. “I wanted this race, I’ve tried to win it for years and I thought I had a horse that could do it, so we’ll have a go,” he said. “At the 800m I was thinking he’s only had a 1300m sprint since he last raced, and if he had had more racing it wouldn’t have worried me, but she (Sanson) knows him. He probably annoyed her around at the start so she thought, take this. “I looked at the track on Thursday and I couldn’t possibly see any advantage to coming out wide, and we haven’t had any rain since then. So, all I said to her to her before the race was ‘don’t go wide’. “This was the only one we brought him back for, whether or not he races again this winter we’ll wait and see. Summer is the aim, but I won’t say no and there is the Taumarunui Cup.” Sanson’s summer had been restricted by injury which caused her to miss the ride in the Dunstan Qualifier, however she was delighted to reunite with the gelding for their fourth win as a combination in 12 starts. “His last win when Triston (Moodley) rode him, I had broken my ankle two days prior and missed out on the ride so it’s nice to get back on him today and win a race,” she said. “He was just an arrogant prick in the prelim, so I thought bugger you, go to the front and keep going. “I was travelling really strongly down the back and I know Antony always has his stayers really fit, so I thought if they can catch me they’re doing really well. “My first win on him was on a bottomless heavy track and we thought maybe that was what he was limited too, but he ran second on New Year’s Day on a good track so he might be able to go on with it into the spring. The world’s his oyster really.” Bred by Debbie and Peter Seebeck, Khan Hunter was initially purchased for $130,000 out of Windsor Park Stud’s draft at the 2019 National Yearling Sales at Karaka. His first victory was in the care of Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray, who then sold him via gavelhouse.com for $9,500 to current owners Fuller and Gene and Barb Jacobson. Saturday’s victory saw his stakes earnings near $220,000, with six wins in 37 starts. View the full article

What Cranbourne Races Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977 When Sunday, June 23, 2024 First Race 5:15pm AEST Visit Dabble Horse racing in Victoria heads to Cranbourne on Sunday afternoon, with a competitive eight-race meeting set down for decision. Despite clear skies on the agenda, the track will likely remain a Soft 6 due to the cold conditions in the regions, while the rail sticks to its true position the entire circuit. Action from Cranbourne is set to commence at 12:15pm AEST. Best Bet at Cranbourne: Muktamil Muktamil caught the eye when finishing third on Australian debut at Pakenham over 1400m when missing in a three-way photo finish. The son of Sea The Stars will derive great benefit from that outing and stepping up to the 1600m looks ideal for the import. Having placed over 2011m at Sandown Park in the UK, the mile looks perfect for the four-year-old to break his maiden at the sixth time of asking. From barrier three, Luke Currie will likely have Muktamil stalking the speed, and when asked for the ultimate effort, he should prove too strong late. Best Bet Race 2 – #4 Muktamil (3) 4yo Gelding | T: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young | J: Luke Currie (59.5kg) +150 with PlayUp Next Best at Cranbourne: Russian Bobshark Russian Bobshark looks well-placed to bring up a second career win at his fourth start as he returns to the Cranbourne 1000m. A debut winner at the track and trip, the son of Russian Revolution went to Sandown and chased home the classy Oak Hill, before finishing third at the Cranbourne 1000m on May 31. John Allen will likely have Russian Bobshark settled in the one-one from barrier five, and with even luck on the home turn, Russian Bobshark should have no issues in disposing of his rivals on Sunday. Next Best Race 6 – #3 Russian Bobshark (5) 3yo Gelding | T: Ciaron Maher | J: John Allen (59.5kg) +260 with Bet365 Best Value at Cranbourne: From Pantherland From Pantherland is hard to catch, but his last two starts suggests he is right in a race like this Restricted BM64 on Sunday. The Ready For Victory progeny was a smart winner two starts back at the Cranbourne 1300m before catching the eye when storming home at Geelong when finishing fourth, beaten by a length. He is undefeated through two goes at the Cranbourne 1300m, and in what looks set to be a genuinely run affair the race sets up perfectly for From Pantherland to storm home down the heart of the track and give us a run for our money at a nice each-way price with horse racing bookmakers. Best Value Race 8 – #1 From Pantherland (8) 5yo Gelding | T: Ken & Kasey Keys | J: Patrick Moloney (60kg) +1400 with Neds Sunday quaddie tips for Cranbourne races Cranbourne quadrella selections Sunday, June 23, 2024 1-2-3-10 2-3 1-3-9-10 1-2-5-6-16 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

The talents of Jay Bee Gee (NZ) (Complacent) and his Hunterville owner-trainer Adrian Bull were clear for all to see at Riccarton on Saturday with a remarkable first-up victory in the Greenwood Amberley Cup (1600m). The Amberley Cup was Jay Bee Gee’s first raceday appearance for 217 days. He was last seen during the New Zealand Cup Carnival at the same venue last November, where he finished eighth in the Listed Metropolitan Trophy (2600m) and 17th in the Gr.3 New Zealand Cup (3200m). Bull gave the six-year-old two trials to prepare him for his return to racing in Saturday’s $40,000 open handicap, running third over 850m at Foxton on May 28 and winning a 1200m heat at Waverley a week later. Punters expected a bold showing from Jay Bee Gee in a fresh state on Saturday and sent him out as the hottest favourite of the day at $2.40, and he did not let them down. Rider Kelly Myers positioned Jay Bee Gee in second as Leitrim Lad (NZ) (Tavistock) set the pace. Jay Bee Gee was travelling easily coming up to the home turn, and he cruised up alongside the leader at the top of the straight. Myers pushed the button with about 300m remaining and Jay Bee Gee quickly took command, pulling away from his six rivals to score an emphatic three-length victory. Jay Bee Gee was bought by Bull’s son Harry for $26,000 at Karaka in 2019. The son of Complacent has now had 19 starts for five wins, four placings and $111,885 in prize-money. Jay Bee Gee has proven himself to be particularly effective over Saturday’s distance of 1600m, recording four wins and two placings from nine attempts at that trip. Bull may now give him a feature-race assignment over the same course and distance in the Gr.3 Winning Edge Presentations Winter Cup (1600m) on August 3, for which the TAB has put him on the second line of favouritism at $10. He shares that quote with Spencer (NZ) (Derryn), while the favourite Justaskme (NZ) (No Excuse Needed) is narrowly ahead of that pair at $8. Saturday’s Amberley Cup also marked a welcome return to Riccarton for Myers, who is a three-time winner of the New Zealand Cup. She took out the time-honoured staying test aboard the Bull-trained Mungo Jerry (NZ) (Don Eduardo) in 2014, along with victories on Hoorang (NZ) (Zerpour) (2008) and Pump Up The Volume (NZ) (Savabeel) (2016). Her 60 winning rides at Riccarton also include the 2012 edition of the Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m) with the Bull-trained Nashville (NZ) (Darci Brahma). “When Adrian asked me to come down here today, I was very happy to make the trip,” Myers said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve ridden here, but it’s still one of my favourite tracks. “He won very nicely today. I was a little bit worried coming into it, with him being fresh up on a very testing track, but he was just too good for them.” View the full article

A win at the South Island’s flagship racecourse was one of the only things missing from the CV of accomplished Winton galloper Midnight Runner (NZ) (Jimmy Choux), and the nine-year-old ticked that box with a barnstorming come-from-behind performance in Saturday’s Daphne Bannan Memorial (1200m) at Riccarton. Midnight Runner was already a 10-race winner before Saturday’s $40,000 sprint feature. He began his career with five wins in the North Island, then ventured south in 2020 and has since added victories at Gore, Riverton, Ascot Park, Oamaru, and back at Riverton two starts ago on May 10. His nine previous starts at Riccarton had produced only two placings, but he turned that record around in style on Saturday. Midnight Runner was ridden by 3kg claimer Ruvanesh Muniandy, who settled well back in third-last as La Bella Nera (NZ) (Sweynesse) and Miss Harley Quinn (NZ) (Natural Destiny) set only a moderate speed out in front. They were pursued by The Good Shepherd (NZ) (Power), Blue Vein (NZ) (Shamexpress) and Street Fightin Man (NZ) (Pure Champion), who fanned across the track at the top of the straight and looked like having the finish to themselves as they surged past the leaders. But then Midnight Runner roared home from the back of the field, bursting to the front in the final 50m and kicking away to win by half a length. “He ran really well,” said Muniandy, who has now ridden Midnight Runner to two wins from just three rides. “His last 600m were very good and he won the race easily in the end.” Midnight Runner’s 64-start career has now produced 11 wins, 18 seconds and eight thirds, earning $298,394 in stakes. The Jimmy Choux gelding is trained by John Phillips, who shares ownership as part of a family syndicate that also includes his son Shane. “That was very good,” Shane Phillips said. “After that win at Riverton last month, we had a bit of confidence coming into this race today. It’s my first win as an owner here at Riccarton, so it means a lot.” View the full article

Sam Spratt’s ability to control races from the front has been no secret this season, and she was at her very best early at Tauranga with a top ride aboard promising three-year-old Did The Trick (NZ) (Iffraaj). Spratt had been aboard the Wayne Hillis-trained gelding at each of his four starts prior to Saturday’s Gartshore Construction 3YO (1300m), and adopting front-running tactics in the most recent effort at Taupo helped him secured a breakthrough maiden success. Stepping into open age-group company at Tauranga, Did The Trick was rated an $8.20 chance to go back-to-back with Spratt on board, while smart filly Cornelia (NZ) (Swiss Ace) topped the market at $2.80 ahead of last-start winner Bella Voce (Fastnet Rock) ($3.60). Did The Trick burst away from barrier three and took up an uncontested lead, with Spratt controlling the tempo as she pleased ahead of Hanalei Star (NZ) (Darci Brahma). The remainder of the field were left chasing on the home turn as the leading pair snuck away by a decent margin, and Did The Trick never looked in doubt as he powered clear to score by 3 ¼ lengths. Cornelia finished creditably into second with a strong finish in the testing conditions, with Hanalei Star and another late-finisher in Swycho (NZ) (Echoes of Heaven) separated by a nose to complete the first-four. “I was always going to be there, I thought Alexander’s horse (Cornelia) might kick up a bit but it didn’t, so I got a pretty easy lead,” Spratt said. Jockey Sam Spratt. Photo: Trish Dunell “He kicked away really nicely and he’s putting it together, it was good.” Matamata-based Hillis prepares Did The Trick for Evans Breeding Ltd, with the late Emma Evans breeding the son of Iffraaj out of her Don Eduardo mare Nailed It (NZ). A winner of nine races, Nailed It has produced one other foal to race in Itsashame (NZ), a son of Shamexpress who trialled three times in New Zealand before being sold to Macau, where he has been successful in two of six starts. Two races later at Tauranga, another impressive front-running victor in Martell (NZ) (El Roca) was successful in the hands of Spratt, securing the fifth win of his 14-start career for Jim Collett and owner-breeder Gerry Harvey of New Zealand Thoroughbred Holdings. She later collected her third winning ride on the card aboard Murray Garrett’s Impaired Vision (NZ) (Rock ‘N’ Pop), saluting in the Waikato/BOP Racehorse Owners Maiden (2100m). The early treble boosted Spratt’s season tally to 63 with eight stakes winners, her leading overall total since the 2015/16 season. View the full article

What Sha Tin Races Where Sha Tin Racecourse – Tai Po Rd, Sha Tin District, Hong Kong When Sunday, June 23, 2024 First Race 4pm HKT (6pm AEST) Visit Dabble Hong Kong racing returns to Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon, with the Group 3 Premier Cup (1400m) and Group 3 Premier Plate (1800m) sharing top billing on a bumper 11-race program. The rail is in the A position the entire circuit, and with no significant rainfall expected to hit the course proper in the lead-up, punters can anticipate a Good 4 surface. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 4pm local time. Premier Cup Tip: Mugen Mugen gets his chance to add black type to the resume after a terrific performance in the Group 3 Sha Tin Vase (1200m) on June 2. He got back to last turning for home and was no match for Ka Ying Rising, but finished off with a withering burst to suggest the 1400m would be his ideal trip moving forward. He gets in with 52kg as Karis Teetan takes the reins, and with a genuine tempo engaged in this field of seven, watch for Mugen to be storming over the top in the final furlong. Premier Cup Race 8 – #5 Mugen (3) 5yo Gelding | T: Pierre Ng | J: Karis Teetan (52kg) Bet with Picklebet Premier Plate Tip: Chancheng Glory There’s no doubt Galaxy Patch could be the rising star in this field, but it’s hard to ignore the setup for Chancheng Glory in the Group 3 Premier Plate. The son of Mor Spirit was nosed out in the shadows of the post in the Group 3 Lion Rock Trophy (1600m) on June 2, with the four-year-old attempting to make every post a winner. He gets a 4kg swing in the weights this time, and with Harry Bentley adopting similar front-running tactics in this, Chancheng Glory should prove hard to chase down. Premier Plate Race 9 – #8 Chancheng Glory (6) 4yo Gelding | T: Francis Lui | J: Harry Bentley (52kg) Bet with Playup Best Bet at Sha Tin: Steps Ahead Back-to-back runner-up performances should have Steps Ahead ready to peak as he gets to 1400m for the first time in the campaign. Francis Lui-trained gelding finished closed off impressively behind Lucy In The Sky at Sha Tin on June 2, and although he was well-beaten by 1.8 lengths, he spaced third by another two lengths crossing the wire. Hugh Bowman should be able to take closer order from stall five, so provided he gains an economical run, Steps Ahead should shirk the maiden tag at the third time of asking. Best Bet Race 5 – #4 Steps Ahead (5) 3yo Gelding | T: Francis Lui | J: Hugh Bowman (59.5kg) Bet with Neds Next Best at Sha Tin: Master Mastermind Master Mastermind showed a blistering turn-of-foot over 1200m at Sha Tin on May 26, and although he couldn’t match motors with Divano, it was a solid performance by the lightly raced three-year-old. David Hayes elects to step him over 1400m second-up in this wide-open Class 4 contest, and with Hugh Bowman electing to stay in the saddle, take that as a guide the son of Deep Field still has plenty of upside moving forward. Next Best Race 6 – #5 Master Mastermind (3) 3yo Gelding | T: David Hayes | J: Hugh Bowman (58.5kg) Bet with Bet365 Hong Kong Sunday quaddie picks Sha Tin quadrella selections Sunday, June 23, 2024 1-5 2-3-8 1-2-5-8-9-11-12-13 1-3-6-9-10-12-14 Horse racing tips View the full article

What Royal Ascot 2024 – Day 5 Where Ascot Racecourse – High St, Ascot SL5 7JX, United Kingdom When Friday, June 22, 2024 First Race 2:30pm BST (11:30pm AEST) Visit Dabble The fifth and final day of the Royal Ascot carnival gets underway on Saturday, with a bumper seven-race program set for decision. The time-honoured Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1200m) headlines the action, with a competitive field of 14 taking their place in the prestigious sprinting feature. The rain should hold off leading into the weekend, with the opening race scheduled to get underway at 11:30pm AEST (2:30pm local time). Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes Tip: Kinross Kinross was a model of consistency in his last preparation, producing two wins and three minor placings across his six starts. He finished the campaign with a runner-up effort at this course and distance in the Group 1 British Champions Sprint Stakes (1200m) on October 21, seemingly peaking on the run as he got nosed out by Art Power. This has been the target since being sent to the paddock, and with Rossa Ryan set to get the gun run on the near side rail from barrier 13, Kinross should go close to securing his third Group 1 win. Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes Race 3 – #4 Kinross (13) 7yo Gelding | T: Ralph Beckett | J: Rossa Ryan (59.5kg) +450 with Picklebet Hardwicke Stakes: Continuous Continuous returns in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2400m) and clearly brings the elite form-lines to this classy staying feature. He was a dominant winner in the Group 1 St Leger Stakes (2900m) at Doncaster on September 16 before being sent to the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (2400m), managing to finish fifth amongst the world’s best stayers. The son of Heart’s Cry might be underdone first-up, but provided she’s at her best, Continuous must be considered the one to beat. Commonwealth Cup Race 2 – #2 Continuous (5) 4yo Colt | T: Aiden O’Brien | J: Ryan Moore (58.5kg) +160 with Playup Best Bet at Royal Ascot: River Tiber The Group 3 Jersey Stakes (1400m) has been built as a race between two, as River Tiber and Haatem go head-to-head after matching motors behind Rosallion in the Group 1 2,000 Irish Guineas (1600m). The drop back to seven furlongs should be ideal for the former, as the Aiden O’Brien-trained three-year-old faded out of the contest, with the mile proving a bridge too far. Watch for Ryan Moore to track across and lead from barrier seven, giving River Tiber every chance of staying the trip. Best Bet Race 4 – #14 River Tiber (7) 3yo Colt | T: Aiden O’Brien | J: Ryan Moore (58.5kg) +160 with Neds Best Value at Royal Ascot: Approval Tom Marquand and Williams Haggas will be looking to combine with Approval in Class 2 Golden Gates Stakes (2000m). He’s on the short back-up after an electrifying performance in Class 5 company at Windsor on June 10, making every post a winner to score by 4.3 lengths. This is much tougher on paper, but with a confidence-building win under his belt, Approval can figure in this at the each-way price with top horse racing bookmakers. Best Value Race 6 – #10 Approval (6) 3yo Gelding | T: William Haggas | J: Tom Marquand (56.5kg) +700 with Bet365 Horse racing tips View the full article
