The son of Makfi has gone through a barren spell, but his most recent third placing at Trentham augured well for his return to the capital city track for Saturday’s Hallmark & Strone Parliamentary Handicap (2200m). These days with Waipukurau horseman Simon Wilson, Marroni hasn’t proved the easiest to place due to his past glory days. “It’s hard with a horse with his rating at 88 to find some nice races,” Wilson said. “He’s wanted a softer track and we got that at Trentham last time and he came through the race nicely. “It will probably be his last start on Saturday and then we’ll turn him out for a while.” Marroni is a multiple winner up to Group level with hopes of a change of environment again bringing out the best in the gelding. “Obviously, he’s been a very handy horse for the owners and I’m enjoying training him, and he goes to the track and around the farm,” Wilson said. “He is in the latter part of his career so it’s a nice change for him and he’s a lovely horse to have around.” Wilson will again use of the services of an apprentice on Saturday with Toni Davies to reduce Marroni’s impost to 56kg. “He needs to get a bit of weight off, so we’ll take the claim,” Wilson said. A past and successful association with the ownership group resulted in Marroni moving south from Cambridge. “I’ve had a couple of horses for the owners before, Scutar and Vidiano, after they had finished with stable life,” Wilson said. Scutar won three races after he relocated from Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman’s operation while Vidiano was successful from Peter Moody’s Victorian stable before he was also a winner for Wilson. “They gave me the opportunity to train them and mix it up with the track, the farm and the beach and this horse was the same,” he said. Marroni was successful on six occasions for Baker and Forsman, including victory in the Group 3 Manawatu Cup (2300m). He also placed in the Group 2 Easter Handicap (1600m) and the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill. Following Baker’s retirement, Marroni added his seventh and last win for Forsman at Te Rapa in the spring of 2022. The gelding subsequently ran second in the Group 2 Japan Trophy (1600m) and following two below par performances during a Victorian campaign, he joined Wilson’s rural stable. “It’s a relatively strong field on Saturday so we’ll take our chances and see what happens and then he’ll have a break,” he said. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Target Audience’s New Zealand racing career will be brief, but the youngster made it a memorable one with a debut victory at Cambridge on Wednesday. The Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray-trained juvenile led all the way to win the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1300m) on his home synthetic track. The son of Derryn attracted overseas interest following a trial success at Avondale last month and recently changed ownership. “He’ll be going up to Hong Kong, the horse was vetted after his last trial and the money came through this week,” Ritchie said. “He’s obviously a very smart horse and he can only get better.” Target Audience lobbed along in front under rider Michael McNab and kicked in the straight to defeat another first-timer in Vesphire. “He’s a lovely horse and while it didn’t look overly impressive because he walked and only just won, he’s extremely green,” Ritchie said. “He was pricking his ears throughout the race and can only improve. “We’re not 100 percent sure if this qualifies him, so he may have to have another start here and his ringcraft will be much better if he does. “If he doesn’t, then job done, and he goes to Hong Kong and hopefully performs well and flies the New Zealand flag and they come back and buy some more.” Inside family knowledge came into play when Ritchie secured Target Audience at Karaka last year. The Cambridge trainer purchased the son of Derryn out of Grangewilliam Stud’s draft at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale for $70,000. He is a son of the Magic Ring mare Magic Tryst, who won on five occasions and was a multiple black-type placegetter when trained by Ritchie’s brother Craig. “Dad (Frank) and Craig also trained (granddam) Our Tristajet and they were extremely fast horses,” Ritchie said. “They would fly the gates and were hard to restrain and lead easily and usually keep going and occasionally get run down, so they were exciting sprinters to watch. “The main thing of course is that they had a ton of speed and Colm and I were very mindful that we don’t have that many two-year-old winners. “We’ve tried this year to buy a couple of horses that will be able to hit the ground running and Target Audience was one from last year.” The gelding has been a work in progress and still far from the finished article. “His greenness has stopped us from getting him to the races until this point,” Ritchie said. “He had three trials and only got mildly better, but he will in time. Photo: Trish Dunell Riccarton trainer Michael Pitman is hoping Zoulander has done enough to qualify for a lucrative polytrack target during Riccarton’s Grand National Festival of Racing in August, following his win at the synthetic track on Wednesday. Following the abandonment of racing at Phar Lap Raceway on Sunday, a six-race meeting was scheduled for Riccarton’s synthetic track on Wednesday, much to the delight of Pitman, who trains in partnership with his son Matthew. They were pleased to give their now seven-win gelding another test on the polytrack and he didn’t disappoint, taking out the Racecourse Hotel & Motor Lodge Open Handicap (1200m) by a neck over Caravella. “He won nicely and he is not a front-runner. It was an outstanding ride by Kylie (Williams), she just used her initiative, there was no pace on, and went to the front,” Michael Pitman said. “We are trying to get him ready for the $100,000 1200m polytrack race on the middle day of the Grand National Carnival. “With transferring of the race today, it just gave another opportunity to qualify, which I am appreciative of. He has probably done enough to gain a start now.” Initially in the care of Hamilton trainers Graeme and Debbie Rogerson, Pitman said he has been a delight to train since joining his barn two years ago. “He is just a genuine racehorse,” he said. “From the first day we had him I have said to a lot of people that he reminds us so much of El Chico. He has now won seven races, he is very honest and has done a good job. “When I bought him, Graeme Rogerson stayed in for a share, and he was of the opinion that if we could get him right, he would win races.” A race prior, the stable picked up a placing courtesy of Ceddy Smith in the Book A Suite Mid-Winter Xmas 22 June Rating 60 (1400m). “Ceddy Smith went well,” Pitman said. “He is not an easy horse to ride, and he (Abdul Najib) rode him well. He will keep on improving and will win one shortly.” Pitman will return to the synthetic track on Thursday to line-up a handful of runners, including Motiontime and Blanche in the Riccarton Park Function Centre Three-Year-Old (1400m). “We can win the first (race),” he said. “There are only five in it and both of our fillies, Motiontime and Blanche, are in-form. “Blanche will possibly end up in front and Motiontime can hopefully get a nice trail. Motiontime is a better horse ridden quietly, the other day she ended up in front and it wasn’t ideal.” Meanwhile, Pitman is looking forward to a rare weekend off and is excited to watch his grandson play rugby league on Saturday. “I am looking forward to seeing my grandson Benji play on Saturday,” he said. “Last year Matthew got coach of the year for the Hornby Panthers in his first year of coaching. The Minister for Racing, Rt Hon Winston Peters, has today announced the appointment Mr Aaron Lloyd as a new member of the Racing Integrity Board for a three-year term of office. “The Racing Integrity Board was established as an independent body under the Racing Industry Act 2020 and is charged with promoting and ensuring high standards of animal welfare, integrity, and professionalism by those in the racing industry. The Board was established on 1 July 2021 and formed part of a fresh start for the industry,” says Minister Peters. “The industry contributes approximately $1.9 billion annually to the New Zealand economy and generates 15,000 full time jobs. New Zealanders expect racing to be safe for the animals involved and fair for punters. The Board helps provide this assurance, which can only be good for the racing industry.” Mr Lloyd will fill the vacancy left by Kristy McDonald ONZM KC, who resigned from the Board in December 2023. “Mr Lloyd is an experienced legal practitioner and one of New Zealand’s top sports law experts. He is internationally recognised for his work on sports integrity matters. He is currently the Judicial Chair of New Zealand Netball and Rugby League and was previously appointed by World Rugby to act as independent counsel for the Japan Rugby World Cup in 2019 and the France Rugby World Cup in 2023.” “I anticipate Mr Lloyd will bring valuable new insights to the board from his international legal expertise in sports which will translate well to a racing integrity space. At Tuesday’s final acceptances, Freedom Rally was 19th in the order, making him the first of five emergencies for Queensland’s richest race. Last year, Antino also missed a run in the Stradbroke and was redirected to the Listed Wayne Wilson (1600m) on the same day, which he subsequently won. Having James McDonald, the top rider in the nation, booked to ride Freedom Rally in the Wayne Wilson will lessen the blow if he suffers the same fate. Karaka Millions riches are set to be amplified next season, with horses eligible for the lucrative NZB Karaka Millions Series racing for an additional $1m in bonuses. This exciting series is comprised of 40 non-Saturday Maiden races to be run from September 2024 through to May 2025. A $25,000 bonus will be struck if a Karaka Millions eligible horse, three years or older, wins one of the races shown below. Expat Kiwi trainer Simon Dunderdale has spent the last two decades plying his trade around the world, with his latest stop being at Selangor Turf Club in Malaysia. Dunderdale has spent the last six years in the developing racing jurisdiction, and he said he is excited about the future of racing in Malaysia, with the closure of racing in both Singapore and Macau opening up plenty of opportunities. “I have got 58 horses in training at present, and with Singapore closing we are picking up a lot of nice owners, and there is a shipment of Macau horses about to arrive,” he said. “They are slowly starting to drip over (from Singapore). I would imagine from the middle of next year we will be looking to buy horses from elsewhere. “Malaysia is definitely on the move. There are already a few Singaporean trainers booked in to come, there are jockeys arriving, and it is looking promising. “It is a great place to live, it is a safe place, and it offers a really good lifestyle.” Dunderdale has found himself at home in Malaysia and he is enjoying plenty of success, currently leading the trainers’ premiership at Selangor Turf Club, which he extended on Sunday with three wins. “I am in front with 26 winners this year, with the next on 23,” he said. “My team has doubled pretty quickly, but I saw it coming about six months ago so I did buy quite a few young horses from New Zealand, and there have been a few that have come from Australia too. “I bought horses in all three ready to run sales in Australasia. I prefer tried horses, because it is a bit of a lottery buying a young one. I have had a bit of luck from those ones recently from New Zealand, which has been very good.” One of those Kiwi success stories has been Antipodean, who Dunderdale purchased out of Regal Farm’s 2022 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale draft for $23,000. “I had three winners on Sunday including Antipodean, who I bought at the (New Zealand Bloodstock) ready to run sales in 2022, he is a Derryn horse who is unbeaten in his five starts,” he said. “He was a Class 3 horse on Sunday and he was up against the best horses here and he cleaned them up, so he is probably the best horse here. I also have a U S Navy Flag that I bought at that same sale called Military Flag and he is one of the up-and-coming three-year-olds.” Dunderdale learned his craft in New Zealand and Australia before spreading his wings further afield, riding trackwork in Japan, England, Ireland and Germany, before training in Macau and Turkey. “I was foreman for Mike Moroney and Tony Noonan in Australia, I worked for Roger James for three and a half years as a track rider, and also worked for Maurice Campbell, and in Australia I started off with Robbie Laing,” Dunderdale said. “I have been in Malaysia for six years now. I did 10 years in Turkey and prior to that I was in Macau for four years in the nineties where it was at the top of its game.” Dunderdale said he had no intention of training in Turkey, however, an opportunity presented itself and he enjoyed being the only foreign trainer in the country for a decade. “Turkey is a great place, I was only going to go to there for a short time, but I ended up staying there for 10 years,” he said. “There was a veterinary surgeon that I was very friendly with when I was working in Macau and he went over there. I went over to visit him, and I was offered a job, I wasn’t interested, but they just kept on hounding me and finally I went there. “I trained a few Group winners, I didn’t get a Group One, but I had a very good mare called Tiara.” Dunderdale said Turkey was an enjoyable but eye-opening experience. “Racing over there is a closed shop, they breed their own horses, you can’t bring in a yearling, but you can bring in a broodmare in-foal,” he said. “Even though the Turkish economy has crashed recently, the prizemoney is very good. The Derby is in a couple of weeks and that is worth NZ$1 million to the winner. “There are two race meetings in Turkey every day, one during the day and one at night. “In Turkey you only work for one owner. I worked for some pretty good owners over there and they usually gave you 30 to 40 horses. I was the only foreign trainer there and it was challenging. It wasn’t easy with the language barrier with the jockeys, it was pretty hard to get by in the early days, but I stuck it out.” Malaysia is home to Dunderdale for now and he said he has no intentions of leaving anytime soon. “I have done the hard yards here,” he said. “When I first came here it was quite low, and now there is a big focus on it with Singapore and Macau closing. The Ciaron Maher-trained import has won his last two Australian starts, including a convincing victory in a 2520m race at Flemington on June 8. “He was very good,” Maher’s Cranbourne-based assistant, Jack Turnbull, told Racing.com. “He put the writing on the wall, won well, and ran a good figure at Cranbourne over 2000 metres. His best form was 2400 metres plus in England, and he showed that on Saturday.” Turnbull added, “He’ll head towards the final in a month over 2600 metres and then plot a path towards The Bart Cummings.” The Bart Cummings is set to be run at Flemington on Saturday, October 5. Lane, who leads the Victorian title by 27 wins and the metropolitan race by 16, started serving his suspension on Tuesday and will return on June 18, making him available to ride at the Sandown meeting on June 19. The incident occurred in the opening race at Mornington, where Lane’s mount, She’s Got Pizzazz, shifted in near the 400-metre mark, causing interference to Hot Chips, who was squeezed onto Stellar Madame. The son of Cosmic Force had shown an ability to finish off strongly from the rear of the field, and he showed the same capability by finishing over the top of his rivals on debut down the Flemington straight. When to bet: With that win, Wonder Boy has qualified for the Next Generation Sprinters Series Final at the same track and trip on July 6. It is expected that Hunter and his team will take him there, and he will be one of the leading chances. Race 3: 3YO Handicap (1600m) | Time: 1:35.89 Horse to follow: Craig (2nd) After an impressive debut at Bendigo, Craig was sent around as the race favourite in the third race over 1600m. The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained import had one run at Newmarket before being sent to Australia, and it is fair to say he should be undefeated on Aussie soil. Luke Currie settled on the fence midfield and allowed his mount to travel around the home bend, but when he wanted to get into clear air, Currie was smothered up by horses on his outside. Meanwhile, the leader and eventual winner, Rise At Dawn, had skipped four lengths clear, and when Craig got into clear air, he flew home but just missed in a photo finish, leaving his backers wondering what could have been. When to bet: Trent Busuttin confirmed post-race that Craig would go to another 1600m race at Flemington in two weeks, and we will be one of many that will be following this very progressive galloper at his next start. Eagle Farm Track rating: Good 4 Rail position: +2.5m entire circuit Race 2: Class 6 Handicap (1200m) | Time: 1:09.84 Horse to follow: Millane (2nd) After being heavily supported in the lead up to the second race of the day at Eagle Farm, Millane made up significant ground from the rear of the field but couldn’t run down the leader and eventual winner. James McDonald took his medicine from barrier 13, but post-race it was clear that he settled too far back, and with the winner breaking clear with 300m to go, he set the Tony Gollan-trained gelding too much of a task. The son of Zoustar let down with a blistering turn of foot to fly past the rest of his rivals and finished less than a length off Hidden Wealth. When to bet: If Tony Gollan can find a race under the same conditions for Millane, he can end his lengthy preparation with another victory if he can produce a similar performance. A pair of geldings by No Risk At All (Fr) and Doctor Dino (Fr) were joint toppers at €160,000 during Tuesday's Goffs Arkle Sale Part 1. The former (lot 138), consigned by Liss House, was purchased by Ian Ferguson and is from the family of Grade 2 winner Violin Davis (Fr) (Turgeon). Lot 222, part of the Sluggara Farm draft, went to Gordon Elliott Racing and is a half-brother to listed winner Syrita (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). Four other stores made €150,000 or higher, with lot 91, a gelding by Tunis (Pol), sold to Tom Malone and Paul Nicholls at €155,000 when sent through the ring by Brown Island Stables. A trio of lots were knocked down for €150,000–a son of Doctor Dino (Fr) from Sluggara Farm (lot 100) sold to Kevin Ross Bloodstock, Mags O'Toole picked up a son of Diamond Boy (Fr) (lot 12) from Brook Lodge Farm, and Malone and Nicholls were in action again for Oak Tree Farm's lot 170, a No Risk At All gelding. The mighty Curlin's heir apparent might be a son standing alongside him at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa. Your average young stallion doesn't usually follow up a first-crop Classic winner with another one in his second crop. To be fair, your average young stallion doesn't often have a Classic winner at all. Good Magic is quickly proving he is not your average young stallion. “Classic horses are certainly the peak, the goal of anyone who breeds, sells, or owns, or even stands stallions,” said Hill 'n' Dale's John Sikura, who stands both Good Magic and his sire, Curlin. “The test of time is if you get Grade I-caliber horses. It's a lovely metric that defines sires most.” After Dornoch became his second Classic winner in just two crops to race in Saturday's GI Belmont S., Good Magic added an exclamation point to his weekend with yet another new graded winner Sunday when Society Man captured Churchill's GIII Matt Winn S. Just how good is this young sire? “That was a fantastic achievement,” said Sikura. “He's proven himself to be a Classic sire. To get Grade I winners is the hardest achievement for a stallion, the echelon of quality. For a stallion to do that repeatedly shows he's an elite horse. “It's always the goal, but it's an elusive goal to achieve. If you're realistic, your expectations are always a bit guarded, but hope is immeasurable. He's delivered a Classic winner in each of two crops.” While others have been eager to christen Good Magic the 'heir apparent' to Curlin, Sikura is somewhat more cautious and diplomatic in using that phrase. “He's still forming his legacy and his sire record, so it's too early to say, but all indications are he's living up to all expectations. Curlin is in such rarified air, such a great horse. So far Good Magic has done everything expected of whomever Curlin's heir apparent might be.” TDN Stallions: Good Magic from Thoroughbred Daily News on Vimeo. It's impossible not to compare Good Magic to his sire, the phenomenal Curlin, as they stand side by side at Hill 'n' Dale. Their sire statistics show it's not only fair to make the comparison, but a compliment to both. Everyone knows how good Curlin is and the staggering numbers of elite performers he churns out, but, unlike Good Magic, it took him a little longer to start cranking out the Grade I winners. Sire and son's first two crops have a comparable number of foals. Curlin had four graded winners from 14 stakes winners in his first two crops, including one Grade I winner. Ten of Good Magic's 18 black-type winners are graded, including four at the Grade I level. Sikura has some ideas as to why Good Magic has gotten off to a faster start than Curlin at the same point in his career. “There's a little difference in the aptitude of the offspring, a little more precocity in Good Magic's offspring, so you see them sooner and earlier. Curlin is such a fantastic horse of such versatility in every division, but it took him a little longer to express himself. Good Magic's offspring are a little lighter on their feet, not quite as substantial in their physicality.” Each had a Classic winner in his first crop: Palace Malice in the 2013 Belmont for Curlin, Mage in the 2023 GI Kentucky Derby for Good Magic. Curlin would add a second Classic winner from his fourth crop in 2016 with Exaggerator in the GI Preakness S. Good Magic has done it in his second crop with Dornoch. After Palace Malice, Curlin wouldn't get his second (and third, and fourth) Grade I winner until his third crop. Good Magic already has four: in addition to Dornoch is Derby winner Mage, GI Arkansas Derby/GI American Pharoah S. winner Muth, and GI Champagne S. winner Blazing Sevens. With the hindsight of Curlin's prowess as an elite sire, the simple comparison and the fast start made by Good Magic is an eye-opener. He's also mandated a raise in his fee accordingly. When Good Magic retired in the latter part of 2018, Hill 'n' Dale introduced him at $35,000 for his initial season in 2019. Five years later, he stood this spring for an advertised fee of $125,000. His full book emphasizes quality over quantity. “He can be a bit of shy breeder sometimes so we don't overwhelm him with mares,” said Sikura. “He's been a very popular horse from the beginning. Interest does not wane in him. He's had good, steady support.” Dornoch the morning after the Belmont | Sarah Andrew The last time in recent history a stallion got two Classic winners in his first two crops was when Birdstone got Derby winner Mine That Bird and Belmont winner Summer Bird in his initial crop of 3-year-olds. That horse would get a total of 10 graded winners–the same number Good Magic already has–over his entire career. Further illustrating how elevated Good Magic's accomplishments already are is how tantalizingly close he's come to adding the Preakness, his progeny's only missing leg of the Triple Crown. In 2023, his sons Blazing Sevens and Mage finished second and third. In 2024, 'TDN Rising Star' Muth developed a fever and scratched as the morning-line favorite a few days before the race. “It's really a rarity with two Classic winners in two crops and then to have the Preakness favorite scratched,” said Sikura. “It shows Good Magic is not a one-and-done sire and it's not luck. Those runners are now an expectation for him. It seems an unrealistic expectation of the horse, but that's what he delivers.” Truthfully, Good Magic signaled he was special from the start. Bred in Kentucky by Barbara Banke's Stonestreet, who kept a piece of him when he sold for $1 million at Keeneland September to e Five Racing, he went into the 2017 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile a maiden. Admittedly, he was a maiden with two improving seconds from two previous starts, including in the Champagne, so it was both a bold and logical move to take a shot at racing's championship day. The gamble paid off in spades. Good Magic won the Breeders' Cup with such aplomb he was named Eclipse champion 2-year-old and the second of Curlin's nine U.S. and Canadian champions to date. His sophomore season concluded with wins in the GI Haskell S. and GII Blue Grass S., as well as with a second in the Kentucky Derby. Some horses–extremely special horses–hit a very elusive trifecta of doing everything right every step of the way from sales ring to race career to breeding shed. Good Magic is one of those horses. With such a spectacular start to his young stud career, the sky has to be the limit, especially as the quality of mares in his book increases based on his initial success. “[His success] is a great feeling of comfort to us and to Barbara [Banke] and to Stonestreet,” said Sikura. “Really it's fantastic for everyone involved with him.” What does Good Magic's firm footing at the top mean for the extensive foundation Curlin has laid as a sire for the ages? “A son perpetuating a legacy doesn't always happen,” said Sikura. “It's almost mythical that his son would stand next to Curlin and carry the torch, not that Curlin is anywhere through. The G1 St James's Palace S. is shaping up to be one of the hottest races at Royal Ascot this year and both Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) and Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) received positive reports from their respective trainers on Tuesday as they prepare to try and topple Notable Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the day one highlight. Trained by Charlie Appleby, Notable Speech heads the ante-post betting for the St James's Palace following his striking success in the G1 2,000 Guineas, but Richard Hannon has not given up hope of reversing the form with his Newmarket runner-up Rosallion, who confirmed himself a high-class colt when going one place better in the G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh last time. “I think Ascot will suit us an awful lot more than Newmarket,” Hannon told Unibet. “We were having our first run of the season, he obviously improved for that first run big time in the Irish Guineas, and he will have come on again. Coming round a bend, quickening off a bend, hopefully you will see him be potent. I can't think there's many horses around that will match him for a turn of foot. “Sat swinging off that Ascot bend, waiting to press the button is how I've thought of it and hopefully that's what happens but there's no doubt Charlie's horse is a really good horse. I'd love to think we can beat him but he looked pretty good in the Guineas–they are two top-class horses.” Henry Longfellow adds plenty of intrigue to the race as he tries to rediscover the form which saw him go unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old, culminating with a five-length victory in the G1 National S. at the Curragh. He could manage only eighth on his return to action in the G1 French 2,000 Guineas at Longchamp, but trainer Aidan O'Brien is happy to put a line through that luckless run. “Everything is well with him [Henry Longfellow] since the last day,” O'Brien told Sky Sports Racing. “In France we made the wrong decision tactically that we'd drop him and there was no pace on and it just became very messy up the straight. Every time Ryan [Moore, jockey] tried to get out he couldn't get out and his chance was gone. “We felt it was a bit of a non-event, Ryan did as well, and everything has been well with him. We're looking forward to seeing him in Ascot.” Elsewhere at Royal Ascot, O'Brien confirmed that Kyprios (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is firmly on course to try and regain the G1 Gold Cup crown he won in 2022, while two of the stable's Classic winners from last year, G1 Derby hero Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and G1 St Leger scorer Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), are set to run in the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. and G2 Hardwicke S. respectively. The trainer also outlined plans for his team of juveniles at the meeting, with Camille Pissarro (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) set to be tasked with trying to provide the Ballydoyle team with a record-extending eleventh win in the G2 Coventry S. on day one. “We run Camille Pissaro in the Coventry,” said O'Brien. “He won first time and got beat second time. Ryan thought he was green so we think he's going to come forward from that. In the Queen Mary we run a filly called Heavens Gate. She won nicely at the Curragh over six furlongs last time and just got beat over five the first day. We're going back to five with her–it could be a little bit sharp but we'll see. “In the Norfolk we have a horse called Whistlejacket and in the Windsor Castle we have a horse called Treasure Isle. In the Albany we have a filly called Fairy Godmother–she won at Naas last time and we really like her. Then in the Chesham we have a filly called Bedtime Story who won in Leopardstown. “The racing is very competitive in Ascot, but hopefully they'll run well. Obviously we like them all. The $150,000 Caesars S. and the $150,000 Horseshoe Indianapolis S. have been rescheduled for Saturday, July 13 at Horseshoe Indianapolis. “Unfortunately, we had to postpone Caesars Day in mid-May due to torrential weather, which included over four inches of rain the evening before and forced us to cancel our racing program,” said Eric Halstrom, Vice President, and General Manager of Racing. “But we did not want to completely bypass both The Caesars and The Horseshoe Indianapolis. Those races have become a staple on our schedule each season. It just took our racing office staff, led by Chris Polzin [director of racing], a little time to find the best fit among other turf events offered in the Midwest. We think we've found a great spot for both races Saturday, July 13.” The Caesars is a one-mile turf event for 3-year-olds, while the Horseshoe Indianapolis runs at the same distance for 3-year-old fillies. The Caesars, which began during the inaugural season of racing in 2003, enters its 19th running while the Horseshoe Indianapolis, which began in 2009, will be held for the 16th year. The U.S. Department of Labor has obtained a court order requiring trainer Steve Asmussen to pay $243,260 in back wages and an equal amount in liquidated damages after its investigation found the employer's pay practices denied 163 grooms and hotwalkers at Churchill Downs and at Keeneland racetrack of overtime wages, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Labor Tuesday. The recovery is the latest action brought by the department since 2021 against KDE Equine LLC, operating as Asmussen Racing Stables with about 200 horses in five states. This is the fifth time in recent years that investigations by the department's Wage and Hour Division found the company violated federal labor laws. In its order, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky affirmed the division's finding that the Hall of Famer failed to pay overtime wages to hotwalkers and grooms, instead paying the employees a salary for hours worked. Employees were occasionally paid extra money for doing additional work, but they were not paid overtime. “Several U.S. Department of Labor investigations have found significant violations related to the way KDE Equine pays its employees,” Regional Solicitor Tremelle Howard in Atlanta said in a release from the U.S. Dept. of Labor. “When we determine that an employer has violated the rights of its workers to be paid their full, legally earned wages, the Department of Labor will not hesitate to use litigation to hold employers like this, who knowingly disregarded their overtime obligations, accountable under the law.” The division determined the employer failed to pay non-exempt employees the additional half-time owed based on their regular rates of pay for hours over 40 in a workweek. Investigators also found KDE failed to keep accurate pay records and allegedly tried to conceal its Fair Labor Standards Act violations by knowingly modifying its records to make it appear the company paid employees by the hour. In Aug. 2023, the Arlington, Texas-based company entered into a settlement agreement to reimburse grooms and hotwalkers $129,776 and pay $75,223 in penalties to resolve violations of the federal H-2B worker program. In September 2021, the division recovered $563,800 in back wages and damages for 170 employees and assessed $46,200 in penalties after finding Asmussen failed to pay proper overtime compensation to employees for hours over 40 hours in a workweek, concealed hours worked by employees, directed employees to sign incomplete or false timesheets and did not calculate employees' overtime correctly. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies have launched a new study that focuses on equine foot health and care. The study, open to equine veterinary practitioners and professional farriers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, seeks their input to help quantify key aspects of hoof knowledge, care and maintenance. Topics included in the study: demographic information, hoof education and knowledge, perceptions of collaborative efforts among the surveyed populations, as well as questions on hoof mechanics, recommendations for hoof specific pathologies and/or injuries, and defining certain associated terms.
