  1. Hamilton trainers Graeme and Debbie Rogerson have enjoyed welcoming back a number of their stable stars this week ahead of their spring preparations. Reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year Sharp ‘N’ Smart was part of that contingent, and his trainers are hoping he can return to the form that led him to snaring New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s top honour. “The good horses have all come back in this week, including Sharp ‘N’ Smart,” Graeme Rogerson said. “He had a viral complaint, and he didn’t quite run up to his best last prep, but he looks magnificent, he has grown into a real horse.” The Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) was Sharp ‘N’ Smart’s primary objective this season prior to his viral infection, and Rogerson is hoping they can get their multiple Group One winner to Australasia’s most iconic staying race this year, electing to bypass the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival. “We will aim for the Caulfield (Gr.1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cups,” Rogerson said. “He probably won’t head to Hastings, but we will just play it by ear. He will have a run here in a sprint and then go off to Australia probably. “If he finds his best form, he is a very good horse. He had four months out and has come back in looking beautiful.” While Hastings isn’t on the cards for Sharp ‘N’ Smart, it is certainly in the picture for Group Two performer Just As Sharp. “Just As Sharp will run in the Foxbridge Plate (Gr.2, 1200m) and the Tarzino (Gr.1, 1400m) if he isn’t sold. We will just see what happens,” Rogerson said. A couple of the stable’s younger brigade also have Rogerson excited about the new season. “Domain Ace has come back looking enormous, he is going to be running in the Northland Breeders’ Stakes (Gr.3, 1200m),” he said. “I like a Tarzino filly called Tarzador, who won a trial, and we have got a lot of young untired horses.” View the full article
  2. Solidify notched up his fifth career victory on Saturday when taking out the New World Otaki Handicap (2100m) for trainers Graeme and Debbie Rogerson. The three-year-old son of Redwood was eased back early to sit midfield by jockey Johnathan Riddell, who bided his time before pressing the go button at the 600m mark, launching his charge three-wide to loop the field. Solidify continued his momentum down the straight to score a 1-1/2 length victory over Phats, with a further half neck back to Princess Elly in third. Solidify was building into a return to the winner’s stall, having placed in his four runs since the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) in March, including a runner-up effort behind subsequent Gr.1 Queensland Derby (2400m) placegetter Moonlight Magic in the Gr.3 Championship Stakes (2100m). “He’s getting better, he raced well and he’s starting to become a stayer,” Graeme Rogerson said. “He hasn’t been straightforward, he can race a bit fierce, and he is learning. He had no luck in the Derby, he got caught out wide and everything went wrong. It might have been a bit soon for him too. His runs since then have all been good. We have persevered with him to make him into a staying horse.” Rogerson is undecided on Solidify’s next step, with the Hamilton horseman weighing up between a few winter assignments or a freshen-up. “I haven’t decided where we will head, we will just play it by ear. He will tell us,” he said. “He might run at Tauranga in the Open race and we might look at the Taumarunui Gold Cup. If we decided to put him out now, I decided to put in a nomination for the Winter Cup (Gr.3, 1600m).” Looking ahead to racing at Cambridge’s synthetic meeting on Wednesday, Rogerson is looking forward to lining up a quartet of juveniles in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series 1300, including three by his resident sire Ferrando – Skymax, Chance Encounter and Karyon. “They (Ferrandos) are not really two-year-olds,” Rogerson said. “There are a few out spelling that look like they are going to be really good. “Skymax is not really a two-year-old, but we have put the blinkers on and he will run a race. Chance Encounter can gallop a bit and they are a chance, and Karyon has got ability, but I think they are a staying horse in the making.” Vancouver filly Orange River will round out the stable’s quartet in the race. “Orange River really wants racing,” Rogerson said. Also on the Cambridge card, Mr Universe will be vying to make it back-to-back wins on the polytrack in the Cambridge Equine Hospital 1300, where he will be joined by stablemate Drum Major. “Mr Universe likes the synthetic,” Rogerson said. “He is a handy old horse and if he puts his best foot forward, he is always a chance.” Rogerson is also looking forward to watching All The Rage and Villon compete in the Pryde’s Easifeed 2000, and Hutson and Jivetalkin in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series 1550. “Hutson is a chance in race two, he was unlucky the other day, and Jivetalkin has got to lean to be a racehorses. Villon and All The Rage are horses getting ready to run over ground.” View the full article
  3. Lim’s Saltoro (NZ) (Shamexpress) stamped himself as the most exciting horse in Singapore when winning at elite level for the first time in Sunday’s $110,000 Silver Bowl over 1400m. And the relatively easy win suggests the son of Shamexpress has a stranglehold on the next two four-year-old features: the Stewards’ Cup over 1600m on 30 June and the Singapore Derby over 1800m on 21 July. Sent out the red-hot favourite in the Silver Bowl, Lim’s Saltoro jumped well from barrier five with jockey Marc Lerner pushing his mount to sit on the leader’s (Aniki) flank in the small field of just seven runners. Into the straight, Lerner took his time to make his move before levelling up with Aniki at the furlong post, but with jockey Daniel Moor making an inside run on Pacific Vampire and Makin looking a serious threat to his outside, it was game on for the favourite. However, a kick by Lim’s Saltoro at the 150m put the race to bed in an instant; while Makin made a late push to keep Lerner honest to the wire, the half-length margin was an easy watch for happy connections. Bred by Onyx Thoroughbreds, Lim’s Saltoro won two barrier trials while trained in New Zealand by Glenn Old. His Silver Bowl victory was his seventh win from only eight career starts and takes his prizemoney to over S$270,000 for the Lim’s Stable. And while Lim’s Saltoro was the ultimate professional during the race, his refusal to head into the winners’ circle showed the character that makes him a special horse. “He’s a very exciting prospect,” said Meagher, who put his name on the Silver Bowl honour roll for the first time on Sunday. “He’s got his traits. Look! He doesn’t want to go into the winners’ stall. But he’s a very good horse. “He only does what he has to do. Like when he’s in front, he won’t let them pass him – unless it’s (Lim’s) Kosciuszko. And when he’s behind them, he goes past them but he waits for them. “He’s got a character of his own. You keep to his routine and he will always do the right thing by you. “He’s very quiet. He just likes to do his own thing. We have to work with him a little, but just a real quality horse. “As you can see, Marc had to jump off him, as he wouldn’t come back (into the winners’ circle). But a very good horse and we are looking forward to the next two legs.” Would the extra distance (1600m and 1800m) of the next two four-year-old features pose any concerns? “His mother (Lamplighter) won over a long distance. Today, I think if he went another 200m they would have stuck with him but wouldn’t have passed him, I believe.” Lerner agreed with Meagher that the next two legs were at his mercy and added that Lim’s Saltoro was improving with each win. “He’s getting better and better,” said the Frenchman. “You see he has his own character: he doesn’t want to come to the photo! “He’s hard work every day but come days like this, he makes us happy. So it’s worth it. “Everything went smooth (in the race). I was super relaxed and I had him on the long rein. “He cannot hit the front too early. So I thought the win was pretty soft because you can see he put his ears back and was working a bit. “Now bring on the next two legs. We are looking forward. “He’s getting easier and easier. It’s sad this place (Kranji) is coming to an end because next year he would have had a much higher profile. “He does everything we ask and just looks forward to the next one.” Other New Zealand bred horses to win in Singapore on Sunday were Atlas (NZ) (Atlante), Onemorefortheroad (NZ) (Proisir), & Outfit (NZ) (Turn Me Loose). 4. Amenable on the way to the barriers prior to the running of Hyland Race Colours Toorak Handicap at Caulfield Racecourse on October 14, 2023 in Caulfield, Australia. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr are aiming to achieve success in Queensland Group One races, with Amenable competing in the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm this Saturday. The training duo has been having a successful carnival so far, especially after Warmongers impressive victory in the Queensland Derby. They have hopes for Amenable to contribute to their streak. Although Amenable has shown his capability in higher-class races by finishing in four Group events, he has only secured a maiden win and a benchmark 84 victory. Nonetheless, Kent Jnr is confident that the horse is prepared to perform following a loss in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes at Scone in his last outing. Amenable has been assigned a weight of 52.5kg for the Stradbroke with the possibility that weights could be increased by up to 1.5kg for all horses once the final lineup is announced on Tuesday morning. Chad Schofield has been selected as the jockey for Amenable, who’s currently priced at $11, with the top Australian bookmakers trailing behind Victory Stakes winner Antino at $6.50 with Neds. 7. Let the record show that the very first horse to win a race at Golden Gate Fields was a mare named Skookumchuck, who won the inaugural race on Feb.1, 1941 before a crowd of 30,000. The last horse to win a race there was Adelie (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}), who got to the wire first in Sunday's eighth, the last race ever at a track. In between, there was a lot of history, a lot of memories…Citation, Russell Baze, Lost in the Fog, Noor. That's history that cannot be erased, but it will surely start to wither away as Golden Gate, the latest track where it did not make economical sense to keep going, ran for the final time Sunday. Bay area racing fans said a fond goodby Sunday. The place was so crowded they had to find extra parking spaces to accommodate the crowds and before the first race, people were lined up around the grandstand waiting to get in. Golden Gate was never what Santa Anita, Del Mar and Hollywood Park were, but for 83 years, it has served its purpose, giving Bay Area gamblers a place to play among a beautiful setting by the San Francisco Bay and a place for the horses that just couldn't make it in Southern California to go. But Golden Gate, which was purchased by Magna Entertainment, the predecessor of The Stronach Group, in 1999, had been struggling for years. With nothing in the way of casino or slot money to support the purses, horses were running for paltry pots, which created horse shortage problems. On the penultimate day of racing, they ran just seven races that attracted 43 starters. That's a gambling product that appeals to absolutely no one. So handle keep declining and fields kept getting smaller. It was a never-ending cycle. “I'm more disgusted with the way things went there,” said trainer Ed Moger, who has trained at the Northern California tracks for 47 years. “Things could be viable, but things weren't done the right way. Everyone was fighting against us, from the TOC, the CHRB to the racetrack itself. Nothing was going good for them.” Moger won the sixth race with Dad's Jubilee (Dads Cap), but was nowhere to be found at Golden Gate Sunday. He has moved 15 horses to Kentucky and plans to race there year-round. “We've been racing here for so many years,” said trainer Steve Sherman. “I grew up here and now to see that this place is closing down, it's kind of a drag. I'm a little sad and a little angry. This is a great racetrack. It's just a shame that people here couldn't get together and find a way to make things work.” Sherman will be taking his horses to Pleasanton, which is part of the Northern California fair circuit. The hope among local horsemen is that the fair tracks will start running longer meets and will give Northern California trainers a place to run throughout much of the year. No one seems quite sure if that is going to work. “They're going to make a run at it,” Sherman said. “People are at least enthusiastic about it. They have a race office that knows what they need to do. I'm really hoping it works. All of California needs this. They need a circuit in the North to keep owners in the game. Will this work? I hope so. That's all we can do is hope.” The post After 83 Years, the Curtain Comes Down at Golden Gate Fields appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 8. A flurry of winners last month has put Stephen Marsh in a strong position to hit the century mark for the third season on the bounce. His stable is currently sitting in second spot on the National Trainers’ Premiership with 88 successes, having posted previous tallies of 100 and 104. While attaining the three figures isn’t Marsh’s top priority, it has now come more into focus. “The 100 wins wasn’t exactly a goal, it is a good feeling though to get there and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to get it again,” Marsh said. Results through May have made another century a more realistic achievement. “I thought a month ago that we weren’t going to be a chance of getting there, but we got 13 wins in May which doesn’t usually happen,” Marsh said. “We’re only 12 wins off it now, so we’re a realistic chance of getting there again. “It’s really nice to reach the century, it’s not our main focus and when we started the season the aim was to win better races and more prizemoney.” Marsh’s operation has topped $5 million in earnings and into double figures for Group or Listed victories. “The stable has had 10 Group or Listed winners and that’s been our best, so at some stage it would be nice to beat that,” he said. Marsh will have a big team in action at Wednesday’s meeting on the synthetic track at Cambridge including multiple contenders in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1550m). Arrowette, Lovaci and Almaceta are an in-form trio who give the stable a quality hand. “They are all racing very well and have drawn decent enough gates, so everything looks good about them,” Marsh said. “They are very hard to split, they’re well-placed and should all be hard to beat. “It really depends on the runs they get, Arrowette has been going super on the synthetic and the other two girls are bit unknown on it.” Zoustar mare Arrowette has placed in all three runs on the all-weather course, including a runner-up finish at her most recent outing. Lovaci was a last-start winner at Taupo while Almaceta was a late-closing fifth when resuming at Te Rapa. “It’s one of those days when we’ve got a good, even spread of horses and I like the four in Rating 65 over 2000m, they are all going well,” Marsh said. The quartet in the Pryde’s Easifeed Handicap is headed by last-start course and distance winner Hoard The Bourbon with ample back-up from The Green Keeper, Pow Tong and Eve’s Song. Marsh is also expecting a bold showing from a daughter of Per Incanto in the Cambridge Equine Hospital Handicap (1300m). “Hasstobefast is back on the synthetic with (Michael) McNab on and the side winkers, so we’ve got a few good all-round chances,” he said. A three-time winner, the five-year-old ran fifth in the Gr.2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) before a break and will have improved with her resuming run for fifth. 9. What Sale Races Where Sale Turf Club – 1227 Maffra-Sale Rd, Sale VIC 3850 When Tuesday, June 11, 2024 First Race 12:15pm AEST Visit Dabble Racing heads to the Sale Turf Club this Tuesday afternoon as an eight-race program is set down for decision. The track was rated as a Soft 6 at the time of acceptances, and with rain forecast to fall on Tuesday, it is expected that the surface will remain in the Soft range for the meeting. The rail will be in the +7m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race scheduled to jump at 12:15pm AEST. Best Bet at Sale: Name Dropper Name Dropper saluted as a heavily backed favourite on his debut at Doomben in August last year, as the Bevan Laming-trained gelding led every step of the 1400m journey and won by 1.3 lengths. The son of Tavistock was sent for a spell straight after that debut win and has been given three jumpouts at Cranbourne to prepare for this fresh run, finishing second in his last two over 1200m and 1000m. With little to no speed in this contest, it is expected that Ethan Brown will attempt to replicate the debut run, and Name Dropper will prove too speedy for his rivals. With three solid jumpouts under his belt, this son of Castledale will be ready to go first-up, and kicking off the preparation in country grade should aid his chances. Ethan Brown will push forward from barrier seven, and if Struck Gold can let down with a strong finish, he will prove hard to beat. 10. After a disappointing showing in Saturday's GI Metropolitan H. at Saratoga, the owners of White Abarrio (Race Day) have decided to send last year's GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner back to trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. Dave Grening of the Daily Racing Form was first with the story. White Abarrio was with Joseph until last spring when the trainer was temporarily suspended by Churchill Downs after two of his horse died around the time of the Derby. Joseph's situation in New York was also in limbo and owners Clint and Mark Cornett wanted to run him in last year's Met. With Joseph's status up in the air, they turned the horse over to Rick Dutrow. For Dutrow, he ran third in the Met before winning the GI Whitney S. and the Breeders' Cup Classic. But he has not been the same horse this year as a 5-year-old. He was beaten 15 lengths in the G1 Saudi Cup and then was fifth, beaten 10 1/4 lengths in this year's Met in a dull effort. “There's not too much to say other than we were very disappointed in his effort Saturday,” said Mark Cornett, who owns the horse along with his brother Clint. “For whatever reason, he didn't fire in the race. Obviously, when he was running so well in the Whitney and in the Breeders' Cup, that was not the time to make changes. Now seemed like the right time to do it, to get him back in Saffie's hands and go a different direction with him at this point. “Saffie is thrilled to be getting him back and his whole barn is happy about the decision. They had the horse longer than Rick had him, so they are very excited to get him back.” White Abarrio will be pointed to the $200,000 GII John Nerud S. at Aqueduct July 6 at seven furlongs. “I want to go back to the basics,” Cornett said. “This is what we did last time when he was coming off that horrible effort in the Pegasus. We're not pointing to anything other than the one race. We're trying to get him back on track. Whatever happens after that happens. We want to get a confidence-building race in him and go from there.” The post White Abarrio Sent Back to Joseph appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 11. With a spring in his step down the lane, it was 'TDN Rising Star' Parenting (Justify–Iadorakid, by Lemon Drop Kid) who stepped up to win his first black-type in the Affirmed S. at Santa Anita Park on Sunday. The colt made his debut in late April at 'The Great RIP' and that effort earned him a 'TDN Rising Star' for the effort. Trying two turns and against much tougher company here, the 4-5 choice got down to business heading into the first turn and began to tussle with Scatify (Justify). As the pair dueled through the far turn, it was Parenting who gained the upper hand and sailed home impressively over his rival. Parenting is owned by Gandharvi, but the racing stable recently offered shares in the 3-year-old through Commonwealth (CMWLTH), the same company that sold shares in GI Kentucky Derby hero Mage (Good Magic). The final running time was 1:42.57. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0. Sales History: $750,000 '23 OBSAPR. O-Gandharvi LLC; B-Jason Hall and BCS Thoroughbreds; T-Bob Baffert. 16. Drayden Van Dyke was quick out of the gate in his first weekend of riding at Gulfstream Park, finding the winner's circle on five of nine mounts, all of whom are trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. The 29-year-old jockey, who switched his tack from Santa Anita for a 30-day trial run at Gulfstream, won aboard his only mount Friday before winning on two of four mounts Saturday. Sunday, he won with Novo Sol in the second race and with Practically Dark in the eighth. Van Dyke earned the Eclipse Award as the country's leading apprentice jockey in 2014. Among his 67 graded-stakes victories, he rode Stormy Liberal to victory in the 2018 GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. He also notched Grade I wins in the 2017 GI Malibu S. and 2018 GI Triple Bend S. aboard City of Light. 17. It didn't look like the GI Belmont S. It didn't feel like the Belmont S. But the Belmont S. it was, and Dornoch (Good Magic) will from here on in be called a Belmont S. winner. What better way to break your Grade I duck as a trainer, as Danny Gargan did here. At a time of concentrated riches among fewer and fewer trainers, Gargan provided a welcome reminder that many plying their trade at less vaulted levels are just as capable of priming their stock for these big days if afforded the talent in the first place. But in many ways, this bespoke four-day Belmont Festival was all about its leading ladies, spearheaded by Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) who gilded the image of her easy GI Kentucky Oaks win with another polished display in Friday's GI Acorn S. Had she made the Belmont S. line-up, it sure would have added a whole lot of spice to the race. But you can't begrudge her trainer Kenny McPeek the decision to burnish his filly's resume with such a pedigreed prize. And McPeek is nothing if not an adventurous explorer–as evinced by his steering of Kentucky Derby hero Mystik Dan (Goldencents)–holding the promise of juicier assignments later on in the season for his latest muse. The big, strapping magnificent mare Idiomatic (Curlin) lost nothing in defeat in Saturday's GI Ogden Phipps S. against her more vertically challenged rival Randomized (Nyquist). They're one-all in a match up. Here's hoping theirs turns into the sort of rivalry that lures warm bodies through the turnstiles as the rest of the season unfurls. And then there was the Argentinian-bred Didia (Arg) (Orpen), who took the GI New York S. on the Friday in fine style, making her a Grade I winner in both hemispheres. Her trainer Ignacio Correas, IV sure knows how to manage a top-drawer Argentinian mare, epitomized by the careful lid he kept on the bubbling cauldron that was Blue Prize (Arg) (Pure Prize), a few years ago. Blue Prize lost out on Eclipse Award plaudits to Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute). Five years later, Didia tosses a beret into a crowded ring for champion female turf horse for possible recompense. Louisiana About-Turn Louisiana Racing Commission's hastily passed and just as hastily rescinded “emergency” medication changes proved once again that no exercise in futility is beyond racing's leadership. At the end of May, the commission voted through “Active Emergency Rules of Racing,” raising the permissible dosage and shrinking the allowable withdrawal times for several medications, most notably the bronchodilator Clenbuterol and corticosteroid Depo-Medrol. This prompted significant push-back from within and without the industry, most notably among several high-profile trainers rightfully concerned about the potential consequences for shipping horses out of the state to race in states with much stricter drug rules. On Tuesday, the commission heeded the calls–sort of. It rolled the rules on Clenbuterol and Depo-Medrol back to match the Association of Racing Commissioners International's (ARCI) model rules. But it still left the looser rules for numerous other drugs unchanged. On Wednesday, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) sent a memo to owners, trainers, regulatory veterinarians, and track management advising that horses coming out of Louisiana must be placed on the vets' list–what would have proven a major headache for trainers. Churchill Downs threatened to cancel a suite of big races at Fair Grounds, including the Louisiana Derby. On Friday the commission capitulated fully, rolling back the rules changes for all remaining drugs. What this farcical episode has highlighted is that such ill-considered changes do a disservice to the many participants of this sport trying to do right by their horses, their teams and their clients. The advent of federal safety and medication rules has come with all sorts of growing pains. For some, these growing pains have been eye-watering indeed. Just this week, a lawyer representing three veterinarians facing potentially lengthy suspensions for possession of prohibited medications in their trucks argued that HISA representatives had told them this was okay, provided the drugs were used to treat animals in their practice outside HISA's jurisdiction (as the veterinarians are claiming). While HISA can only be applauded as it continues to tweak its rules in response to calls for more common sense approaches to commonplace drug and medication-related issues, a regulatory landscape marked by constantly shifting goalposts is a difficult one to navigate, to say the least. Just as it's incumbent upon the sport's participants to familiarize themselves with the rules, it's just as incumbent upon those writing the rulebooks to make their directives readily understood and supported by both science and reason. Goodbye Golden Gate… By the time you're reading this, the last race will have run at Golden Gate Fields, the last stragglers in the grandstand will have trickled out through the doors, and the horsemen and women who remain will be left in the chilly silence that follows to confront a painfully uncertain future. “I don't know why they close this place. But what can we do?” Octavio Saldana, who works for trainer D. Wayne Baker, told the TDN this past week, capturing the sense of powerlessness that many in Northern California feel. Most of the horsemen and women there will, if they haven't already, start preparations to make the move to Pleasanton at the Alameda County Fair in Pleasanton, some 35 miles away, give or take. First up on the calendar is the regular California fair meets. Then comes the new 10-week meet this fall at Pleasanton, events at which will have a huge bearing on whether the Northern portion of the state can maintain a viable circuit in Golden Gate's absence. All the while, tough economics for horse racing in California will prove ever more keenly felt. This reality drives a budgetary fight to be thrashed out at the upcoming California Horse Racing Commission (CHRB) meeting. At the heart of it all is a simple equation: The pie being carved up is currently too small to feed every hungry mouth. Where California leads, the rest of the country follows. And many in the industry have said that California is too big to fail. But now is crunch time to see just how moved these individuals are to help sustain a year-round sport out West. A few more horses wouldn't hurt. A radical reshaping of the system would be better. 20. The Canadian champion colt from last year, My Boy Prince (Cairo Prince–Hopping Not Hoping, by Silent Name {Jpn}), was back in the winner's circle at Woodbine as he romped in the Queenston S. on Sunday afternoon. The leading candidate for favoritism in the upcoming King's Plate, the gray had some competition for the front heading up the backstretch, but he soon left little doubt who the best horse was in this spot. Powering on through the far turn, the 3-year-old cruised down the lane to get his picture taken by multiple lengths. The final running time was 1:21.90. Lifetime Record: 9-5-2-1. Sales History: C$87,835 '22 CANSEP. O-Gary Barber; B-Murray Graham Smith; T-Mark Casse. 21. SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY-A steady rain Sunday morning wasn't going to put a damper on the mood at the barn of trainer Danny Gargan on the Saratoga backstretch. When you have the winner of the GI Belmont S. in one of your stalls, a lousy morning isn't going to feel so bad. And Dornoch (Good Magic), the upset winner of the Belmont, does indeed live in Gargan's barn. “My phone had 290 text messages on it,” Gargan said, standing outside his office. “My phone hasn't stopped ringing. He came out of the race great; he's standing around biting everybody today.” Dornoch, a full-brother to 2023 GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage, backed up Gargan's confidence in the Belmont when he won the 1 1/4-mile race by a half-length over Mindframe (Constitution) at odds of 17-1. In his two prior starts, Dornoch ran a non-threatening fourth in the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. then was nowhere in the Kentucky Derby, finishing 10th. “I kept telling everyone you can throw the Derby out,” Gargan said. “He had no chance. He drew the one hole and 100 yards into the race, he got checked and it was over. I got him beat in the Blue Grass. We wanted to take him off the lead in the Blue Grass and school him and toughen him up for the Derby. That was our decision. I was never frustrated with the horse. I was frustrated with his trips.” Dornoch has been in Saratoga since right after the Kentucky Derby and he will continue his stay here, repeating the routine from last year when he was at the Spa from April to October. The main summer goal is the GI Travers S. Aug. 24. Gargan said Dornoch could run in the GI Haskell S. at Monmouth July 20 or the GII Jim Dandy S. at Saratoga July 27. After that, Gargan said Dornoch could run in the GI Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Sept. 21. Gargan said he never felt any pressure training Dornoch, even though he had an attractive pedigree that suggested he could be special. “No, because I knew he could run,” Gargan said. “Two months before he ever ran, I said he was the best horse I ever trained. I knew what I had.” McPeek Had an Up and Down Couple of Days There was euphoria and disappointment in a span of 24 hours for trainer Kenny McPeek. On Friday, super filly Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) dominated the GI Acorn S., winning by 5 1/2 lengths. The next day, GI Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (Goldencents) was never a factor in the GI Belmont S., finishing eighth in the field of 10. “It's part of the sport,” McPeek said Sunday by phone. “It's never easy. We asked a lot out of [Mystik Dan]. Obviously, we wanted to run better, but, again, it's part of the game. That's what makes it so difficult.” McPeek said Mystik Dan did not handle the Saratoga track very well and, in hindsight, said maybe he should have trained him more over it in the days leading up to the Belmont. Mystik Dan did most of his pre-Belmont work on the Oklahoma Training Track. Next up for Mystik Dan is some rest. The summer goal is the GI Travers at Saratoga Aug. 24. “With all the races he has had [six this year] and all the training, I think he deserves a big break,” McPeek said. The long-range schedule for Mystik Dan, McPeek said, also includes the GI Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Sept. 21 and the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar Nov. 2. As for Thorpedo Anna, don't expect to see McPeek run her any time soon against males. McPeek said she will be pointed to the GI Coaching Club American Oaks and GI Alabama S. at Saratoga. She has won five of six career starts, and is three-for-three this year, including the GI Kentucky Oaks. “Look, I like challenges, but I also think this filly is so good that she could run the table in the 3-year-old filly division,” McPeek said. “If she were to win the GI [Breeders' Cup] Distaff, would that make her Horse of the Year? The conservative approach would probably be the wise one as opposed to putting her in deeper water that she doesn't have to go into.” Lukas will Return with Seize the Grey By 10 a.m. Sunday morning, the GI Belmont S. and Saratoga Race Course had long disappeared from Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas' rear-view mirror. He and GI Preakness S. champ Seize the Grey (Arrogate) were on the way home to Louisville. The sting of Saturday's sixth-place finish in the Belmont had begun to subside as the travel party barreled through Erie, Pa. They departed Saratoga at 6:45 Sunday morning. “He gave me every indication he was going to run a big one,” Lukas, riding shotgun in the truck ahead of the van transporting Seize the Grey, said by phone. “I thought he would run a lot stronger race. He flattened out in that last quarter and that surprised me.” Seize the Grey set swift early fractions [:22.99, :47.25] as he set the pace, but then tired after being overtaken by Dornoch (Good Magic), who had followed him throughout. “It was a little quick, but the eventual winner was right there, too,” Lukas said. Lukas said he will be back in Saratoga with a full barn later this month. Seize the Grey will also return with an eye on the 40-day summer meet's biggest prize, the GI Travers S. Aug. 24. Whether Seize the Grey runs before the Midsummer Derby has yet to be decided. Lukas said Sunday that he is considering running in the GI Haskell S. at Monmouth July 20. “We'll look at the Haskell,” Lukas said. “It's a million-dollar race, so it's not exactly off the radar.” He will also consider the GII Jim Dandy S., which is run at Saratoga July 27. Seize the Grey, Lukas said, came out of the Belmont OK. He did have a “some nicks and cuts” on a hind leg. “We'll deal with that,” Lukas said. “Nothing serious. He is all right.” Mott Still Needs an Answer Going into the GI Belmont S., Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said he needed to find out if Resilience (Into Mischief) could handle a mile and a quarter. After Resilience finished last–beaten 33 1/4 lengths–in the 10-horse field, he still doesn't know. “I learned nothing,” Mott said outside his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track Sunday. “The race was too bad to be true.” Resilience finished sixth in the GI Kentucky Derby and Mott decided to give his colt another chance at the 1 1/4-mile distance in the Belmont. He stormed into contention in the Run for the Roses while running wide and then retreated. In the Belmont, Resilience, who won the GII Wood Memorial, didn't do much of anything. “He was done at the half-mile pole,” jockey Junior Alvarado said Sunday morning. “It was not his day; he just didn't show up. We are just scratching our heads. Eventually, he might not want to go [1 1/4 miles], but I can't judge him from this race.” Mott said he might have to dig deeper as to what contributed to such a poor performance in the Belmont. “When they run that poorly, we need to look and see if there is something wrong that we are missing,” he said. “Something is out of whack.” The post Belmont Winner Dornoch Could Run Next in Haskell appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 24. After sire Good Magic and trainer Danny Gargan took home the GI Belmont S. with Dornoch on Saturday, the paired teamed once again with Society Man (Good Magic–You Cheated, by Colonel John) to capture the GIII Matt Winn S. under the Twin Spires on Sunday afternoon. Sent off at 6-1 in his first race since running 16th in the GI Kentucky Derby, the gelding was last heading into the first turn. Undaunted by the prospect ahead, Society Man got into gear by sticking to the rail around the far turn. Corey Lanerie's mount shifted to the three path at the eighth pole and took aim at Rocketeer (Curlin). Gaining the advantage at the sixteenth pole, the colt swept past and handed Gargan the win, who had both Derby entries deliver graded stakes victories over the weekend. The final running time was 1:42.33. Lifetime Record: 7-2-1-1. Sales History: $85,000 '22 KEESEP. O-Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, West Paces Racing LLC, GMP Stables LLC, Carl F. 25. Silvestre de Sousa gained his third European Classic victory of the year on Sunday as he produced the Paolo Aragoni-trained Tomiko (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) with a strong late run to land the G2 Oaks d'Italia Tattersalls at Milan's San Siro Racecourse, working the oracle on a filly who was remarkably gaining the first win of her career on her eleventh start. De Sousa–who'd already won the G1 1,000 Guineas on Elmalka (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and the G2 German 2,000 Guineas on Devil's Point (Ire) (New Bay {GB})–was riding Tomiko for the first time on Sunday and soon had her settled at the rear of the 10-strong field, some way off the pace set by Nikkei (Ity) (Affaire Solitaire {Ire}) in the early stages. It looked like being a two-horse race for much of the straight as Sun Never Sets (Karakontie {Jpn}) moved up to challenge Nikkei at the head of affairs, but Tomiko was gradually making headway under De Sousa and there was no stopping her once she was switched to the outside after briefly meeting trouble. Relishing the step up to 2,200 metres for the first time, she powered home to secure the lion's share of the €388,300 prize fund, beating Sun Never Sets by a short neck at odds of 182-10, with Nikkei over a length further back in third. German raider Isfand (Ger) (Isfahan {Ger}), sent off the odds-on favourite, could manage only fourth. As part of their sponsorship, Tattersalls offered vouchers of 15,000 guineas, 5,000 guineas and 2,500 guineas to the owners of the winner, runner-up and third, respectively. The vouchers can to be spent at the 2024 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale or Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, or at the 2025 Tattersalls Craven and Guineas Breeze-Up Sales. The winner, runner-up and third are also offered free entry to the Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Tomiko is already a Tattersalls graduate having sold to Marco Bozzi Bloodstock for 20,000gns when offered by breeders Awbeg Stud at Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale. She'd produced several good efforts in defeat despite failing to get off the mark in her 10 starts prior to the Oaks d'Italia, notably gaining black type as a two-year-old when finishing third in the G2 Premio Dormello and runner-up in the Listed Premio Repubbliche Marinare.
