SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Every one of the 2,570 partners in MyRacehorse's Seize the Grey (Arrogate) has a story about their GI Belmont S.-bound Preakness winner. Or three. Or six. Truth be told, probably more. They are co-owners, albeit with micro shares that cost a mere $127, of the winner of a Triple Crown race, who will try to add a second jewel on Saturday when the 156th Belmont is run for the first time at Saratoga Race Course. They are part of a movement begun 55 years ago by the late Cot Campbell, to offer fractional ownership of thoroughbreds. The MyRacehorse concept makes ownership possible for even more people. Formed in 2018 by Michael Behrens, MyRacehorse had a huge early success during the summer of 2020 when it was able to buy into subsequent 2020 GI Kentucky Derby and GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner with Authentic (Into Mischief). MyRacehorse officials expect between 300 and 400 of the Seize the Grey partners will be on the grounds when the oldest Triple Crown race is staged at America's oldest track. The Belmont will be run at Saratoga this year and next while Belmont Park undergoes a substantial makeover. Deborah and Stephen Durso, residents of Long Beach on Long Island, figure they have been racing fans for about 50 years. “We've been visiting Saratoga for 30 years because of the racetrack,” Deborah said. The Dursos own property in Saratoga and have been involved in other partnerships. Seize the Grey was their first purchase with MyRacehorse. They have four shares, and have since bought into two other horses as well as a package of four New York-breds. They watched Seize the Grey's gate-to-wire triumph in the Preakness on television. When GI Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan was making a run at Seize the Grey in the stretch, the Dursos were on their feet. “We were screaming, 'stay up there. Don't let him pass you,'” she said. Though they were miles from Pimlico, the Dursos were celebrating the triumph. “I like to say to people, 'think of your son hitting a home run in the bottom of the ninth,'” Stephen said. “That's literally how it felt.” As veterans of other partnerships, the Dursos said the MyRacehorse approach works just fine for them. “You might get into a partnership where you need $50,000,” he said. “In this, it was fun, you made a little money and it's exciting like you own the horse all by yourself.” The Dursos watched Seize the Grey break his maiden at Saratoga on July 29 and participated in the owner's experience, visiting the colt at trainer D. Wayne Lukas' barn. Before he emerged as a Triple Crown series-caliber runner they had purchased their tickets for the Belmont-at-Saratoga week. “We were hoping that he would be here in one race or another for this weekend or the summer,” Stephen said. “Then when he won the Pat Day Mile, and then he won the Preakness and now he's in the Belmont, it's just as good as it gets.” Amanda Stebbins could very easily be the face of a MyRacehorse marketing campaign. Besides the single share in Seize the Grey, she has a stake in 43 other horses. Stebbins, a resident of nearby Malta, N.Y., joined the MyRacehorse party in the summer of 2020 with the purchase of two shares in Authentic. She dove in a little deeper just before the won the Kentucky Derby by purchasing eight more shares. She says her investment in a colt who went on to be the 3-year-old male champion and Horse of the Year was about $2,000. “I bought in right before he ran in the Haskell and won,” she said. “He was already pre-qualified for the Derby and I said, 'I have a horse going to the Kentucky Derby.' Of course, this is the year of COVID. No one's going anywhere. I'm telling all my friends and family and everybody's getting excited. On September 5, he goes into the Derby and my parents said, 'are you going to be upset if he loses?' I said, 'I will only be upset if they van him off the track.' I said, 'I don't care. 'I have a horse in the Derby.' And we went right to the lead and held the lead the entire time. That was fantastic. Of course, that stretch run with Swiss Skydiver in the Preakness was amazing. And then going to the Breeders' Cup Classic and winning. He still holds a track record at Keeneland. That was wonderful.” Stebbins figured she had reached the peak of her career as an owner with Authentic. “You think, 'lightning strikes once and that's it,'” she said, laughing. “Then when (Seize the Grey) came into the stable, he was a yearling, and I had an opportunity to purchase into him. I saw that Wayne Lukas was going to be his trainer. And I said, 'Man, the Coach knows what he's doing.' So I bought in.” Stebbins said MyRacehorse is very appealing to her because the company does not charge owners anything beyond the initial share price. She also likes the social aspect of meeting other owners and having opportunities to meet the horses and trainers. In her professional life, Stebbins is the Lead Manufacturing Process Engineer at Ball Metal in Saratoga Springs. She said the facility produces nine million aluminum cans a day. Stebbins and her husband were in New York to start a cruise when the Preakness was run. She thought about making the drive to Baltimore for the race, but decided she was cutting it too close. By then, she had already purchased her tickets for the Belmont at the hometown track she has been visiting for a decade. “I'm like, 'What are the odds that the Belmont would be at Saratoga, 20 minutes from my home?” she said. “I have a horse in the Belmont with a very good chance of winning the Belmont. And he won the Preakness. When you start looking at those odds and those probabilities, it's absolutely amazing. I'm very happy that I booked myself for all four days to be here at the track.” Bryce and Shayla Teater of Little Rock, Ark. had hoped to see Seize the Grey run in the Belmont, but had to change plans and will watch it at home. They missed the Preakness, too, but have a memorable story about their seeing the race while on a flight to Greece. The Teaters were in window seats with Shayla in the row in front of her spouse. They bought separate Wi-Fi package because they were seated apart. “Twenty-five bucks each to watch this and we weren't even sure if it would work because plane Wi-Fi, especially over the ocean, isn't that dependable,” he said. “But we have YouTube TV, and we were both able to stream it.” Seize the Grey | Sarah Andrew As Mystik Dan tried to overtake Seize the Grey in the stretch, Bryce reached forward. “I just started shaking my wife's shoulder, and she started jumping up and down. Both of us screamed,” he said. “If you've flown overseas, it was right after dinner when everyone is trying to go to sleep. I remember looking over when we had our hands in the air and yelled and everyone is staring at us. An older couple was next to me and I said, 'I'm sorry, I own a micro share of this horse and he just won the Preakness.' He said, 'you've got to be kidding.' I said, 'No, I'm not.'” Teater said he and his wife became much more interested in racing during the pandemic when it was one of the few sports on television. She is the news director at the CBS affiliate in Little Rock and he is a product marketing director for the software company Datapath. They have been with MyRacehorse for a few years and have shares in 13 active horses. When Seize the Grey goes to the post in the Belmont, the Teaters will be in a more familiar place where they won't have to explain if they stand and shout at the TV. “We're going to have a little get together here with my parents and friends and try and will him to victory,” Teater said. “It'll be definitely a tougher test this time around, but I think he's got it.” Ken and Mary Myers traveled to Saratoga for the Belmont from their home in Naples. Fla. They are major investors in MyRacehorse and also personally have a big stake in Seize the Grey. Myers said he liked the plan Behrens developed. “It's a spectacular opportunity to show people what horse racing is like, beyond what they see when they watch the Derby, or the Preakness or the Belmont Stakes, and maybe that's all they ever see,” Myers said. “There's so much behind the scenes. And what we're doing in MyRacehorse is giving people that emotional attachment to really being able to own a piece of a horse, sharing the winnings, sharing the experience, just really revel in what this is all about.” The Myers faced a dilemma when Seize the Grey won the Pat Day Mile on May 4 and Lukas said the Preakness was up next on May 19. That was the date of their goddaughter Molly Meadows' wedding. “We thought, 'We can't miss the wedding. But at the same time, the Preakness is potentially a once in a lifetime,” Myers said. “Our goddaughter and her fiancé said to us, 'listen, we could see you anytime, you've got to go to the Preakness.' They actually stopped the wedding reception and all watched the race. It was an incredible time for them as well.” Myers said the noting the number of partners in Seize the Grey only tells part of the story if its impact. “People have said to me, 'Think about 2,750 people now are getting the experience.' I said 'No, each one of them has a partner and kids and friends and family. There are tens of thousands of people that are following Seize the Grey and that's what the sport really needs. It needs this type of publicity, and it's bringing it to a whole new generation of fans. The Louisiana Racing Commission went back to square one Friday, announcing that it will adhere to the guidelines set by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) regarding medications. The move came just nine days after the commission announced an emergency set of rules that were about to take effect and would have meant that Louisiana had, by far, the most lenient medications policies in the U.S. The withdrawal times for dozens of medications had been reduced and the threshold levels had been increased. The laundry list of changes included two particularly controversial drugs, Clenbuterol and Depo-Medrol. The withdrawal time for Clenbuterol was reduced to 72 hours. Under ACRI rules the withdrawal time was 14 days. The new regulations called for a withdrawal time of seven days for Depo-Medrol. Under ARCI rules the withdrawal time was 21 days. Clenbuterol is a bronchodilator that is believed to act like a steroid and build muscle mass. Depo-Medrol is a steroid injected into joints to treat pain and swelling. Louisiana is not under the control of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA). The new rules were roundly criticized throughout an industry that has been trying to reduce the sport's dependence on drugs, including therapeutic medications, and create as safe a sport as possible. Some of the harshest criticism came from trainers who stable at the Fair Grounds before returning to Kentucky or other jurisdictions. Reacting to the criticism, the Louisiana Racing Commission backtracked on the rules regarding Clenbuterol and Depo-Medrol, announcing Tuesday that, regarding those two drugs, it was returning to the rules established by the ARCI. With all other medications the new rules were to stay in effect. But that was not enough to appease those opposed to the overall direction the commission had taken. On Wednesday, HISA announced that any horses shipping from Louisiana to tracks covered by HISA would have to go on the vet's list. “HISA has reviewed the Emergency Rule (as modified during the public meeting on June 4, 2024) and HISA's Veterinary Team has determined that it poses significant risks to both equine welfare and the integrity of Thoroughbred racing,” read a HISA statement Still more pressure came from Churchill Downs Inc., which owns the Fair Grounds. On Thursday, CDI CEO Bill Carstanjen sent a letter to the commission. “…CDI views the LSRC's actions in passing the Remaining Emergency Rules as a credible risk to the reputation, safety and integrity of Louisiana racing that will result in damage to the economics of the Louisiana racing ecosystem,” Carstanjen's letter read. “Indeed with the announcement made Wednesday evening by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority requiring any horses that race in Louisiana to be placed on the HISA Veterinarian's List prior to running an another racing jurisdiction, our initial concerns are no longer hypothetical.” Carstanjen went on to threaten that unless Louisiana fully adhered to the ARCI rules there would be a “strong likelihood that we will not hold the Risen Star, Lecomte, or the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds, to name but a few key races.” With its back fully up against the wall, the commission voted Friday to ditch the controversial rules it had passed and to fully return to the ARCI rules. The vote was unanimous. “The commission does not wish to create any undo hardships to Louisiana racing participants,” said the commission's executive director Steven Landry. “Given these concerns the commission has convened today to consider a total revision to the April 29 changes to the medication rules, thereby returning to the rules that had been in place for the last several years.” “In my opinion we never should have considered these emergency drug rules,” said Commissioner Mike McHalffey. “I would really like to apologize to all the horsemen in Louisiana and around the country for the trouble this has caused.” Shortly after the Louisiana commission voted to rescind the emergency rules, HISA announced that horses shipping out of Louisiana will no longer be required to go on the vet's list. “This afternoon, the Louisiana State Racing Commission held an Emergency Public Meeting at which the Commission voted to rescind in full the emergency updates to Louisiana's controlled medication schedule for thoroughbred racing, which reportedly were set to take effect tomorrow in Louisiana (the “Emergency Rule”),” the HISA statement read. “With the complete rescission of the Emergency Rule, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, Inc. (“HISA”) will not require Covered Horses shipping from Louisiana to a HISA jurisdiction to be placed on the HISA Veterinarians' List as medically compromised and unfit to race as announced in the June 5, 2024 Memorandum. SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY–Hosting a slew of top-shelf graded stakes action at the Spa is not a new concept. However, doing it the first weekend in June is. The ongoing construction at Belmont Park necessitated a venue change for the next two years, creating a unique opportunity to host a Triple Crown jewel in upstate New York. Admittedly, the decision has sent local accommodation rates into the stratosphere, to the point of hilarity. But, for the diehard fans that want to get a glimpse of history, this year's shift was welcomed. Saturday's sparkling nine-race graded card his led by the GI Belmont S., shortened to 1 1/4 miles for the 2024 renewal. Classic winners Mystik Dan (Goldencents), who took the Kentucky Derby, and Seize the Grey (Arrogate), all-the-way winner of the GI Preakness S., lead the fray and would help solidify their hold on the division in the first half of the year. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, the latter has been somewhat overlooked in the days leading up to the third jewel in the Triple Crown. His Hall of Fame conditioner acknowledges the strength of the competition, however, points out that the colt's current form and versatility makes him dangerous. “I took him to the main track and he got over that really well. He got over it beautifully, he just skipped over it. I was really pleased,” he said. Despite winning the Preakness on the front end, Lukas said that his colt won't be confined, tactically. “We'll run our own race,” he said. “They want the pace, we'll let them have it. Our horse is not one dimensional. That's the beautiful part. You can do anything with him. We can be fifth or first. I'll have a little conference with Jaime [Torres] and work on a couple of scenarios.” While the sentiment was probably the last thing Mystik Dan's trainer Kenny McPeek wants to hear heading into the race, it was not unexpected. “You do not know how these races are going to unfold. I quit trying to predict them years ago,” he said. “You have to trust that [Brian Hernandez] knows the horse, and we do. How it unfolds, is anybody's guess. We found that out at the Preakness. We thought we could run down [Seize the Grey], but we couldn't catch him. We'll see if anybody goes with [Seize the Grey] and how things play out.” A runaway winner in the GIII Southwest S. earlier in the season, Mystik Dan has shown consistency in eight career starts, finishing out of the money only twice. “He's been awfully consistent all winter, so we have just been trying to make sure he's on an even keel. Even Steven,” McPeek said. Regarding his colt's post position, he added, “[Owner] Lance Gassaway had said prior to the draw that three was his lucky number, and we nailed post three. We feel good about it.” Favored at 9-5 on the morning line, Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) will try and do what he couldn't do in the Derby five weeks ago. Nosed out by Mystik Dan, the $2.3 million Fasig-Tipton Saratoga topper won the GII Risen Star S. and GI Toyota Blue Grass S. prior to his Derby run, and bypassed the Preakness in favor of a return to a distance he has shown he can handle. “I'm more or less managing him to try to make him Champion 3-Year-Old–picking the right races and giving him the rest that would be most beneficial to him,” said Chad Brown. “He ran a super race and never let us down in terms of not showing up in the race. He's always fired. Has he gotten in his own way a couple times that prevented him from being undefeated? Probably, but he has so much raw ability that you take the good with the bad–and there's a lot more good.” Typically well-armed in the Triple Crown's third jewel, trainer Todd Pletcher arrives with Antiquarian (Preservationist), Mindframe (Constitution) and Protective (Medaglia d'Oro). Likely the most fancied on the day is Mindframe, named a TDN Rising Star in a flashy debut at Gulfstream Mar. 30. Back in the winner's circle following another easy win, this time at Churchill Downs May 4, the Repole Stable and St Elias Stables runner faces stakes company for the first time. “He's been super-impressive in his two races and the way he's done that and how easily he's won those races, how fast those races have been–it gives you the confidence he has the talent,” Pletcher said. “The question mark is if he has the experience and the seasoning. Obviously, he's giving up some experience to some really good horses, so that's the concern. I think, from a talent perspective, he has enough talent to compete with this field, but he doesn't have the foundation and the experience that most of the ones in here do.” Antiquarian won the GIII Peter Pan S. at the Big A May 11 and will be trying the 10-furlong distance for the first time as will be Protective, Peter Pan and GII Wood Memorial S. third-place finisher. “I liked the way Antiquarian finished [in the Peter Pan], and I really like the way he galloped out,” said Pletcher. “I'm excited about giving him the opportunity to run a mile and a quarter.” Also keen to see how Resilience (Into Mischief) will handle the Classic distance, trainer Bill Mott believes a last-out Derby seventh might have been better than some might think. “He had a great trip,” the Hall of Famer said. “Coming off the turn, he looked like he had as good a chance to win as anybody with the momentum and trip that he had. But at the eighth pole, he just didn't finish it off. I really don't have any excuses for him other than maybe he's a horse that's slightly inexperienced. Maybe he just didn't run his very best race on that day. He ran a good race and I thought he was in position to win but didn't get it done. We're going to try again.” He continued, “We want to find out about the 10-furlong distance. I think that's very important for us to find out at this point in his life. Not that we want to experiment in a race like this, but we'll find out if we need to move forward and try to go to the [GI] Travers [S.] or if we need to back up in distance and find some other races at eight or nine furlongs.” Asked if the GII Wood Memorial winner would have started in the Belmont if it had been at its traditional 1 1/2-mile distance, Mott admitted, “I don't believe he would have been. It wouldn't have been something we are trying to do. I think 10 furlongs probably a better proving ground for a stallion prospect. I think people are more anxious to see a horse win at 10 furlongs than 12.” Rounding out the field, last year's GII Kentucky Jockey Club winner Honor Marie (Honor Code), who finished a troubled eighth in the Derby; GII Remsen S. and GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S. scorer Dornoch (Good Magic) and The Wine Steward (Vino Rosso), victorious in last season's Funny Cide S. and runner-up in his three latest starts, including the Peter Pan last time. Underscoring the quality of the Belmont field, Lukas summed it up succinctly. “I think this field is excellent,” he said. “It's better than the Derby and better than the Preakness. You can make a case for more horses here than you could in the Derby or the Preakness.” Ogden Phipps Sets Stage for a Clash of Champions Getting the afternoon's Grade I-racing action off to a fast start, the Ogden Phipps S. renews the rivalry of champions Idiomatic (Curlin) and Pretty Mischievous (Into Mischief). The former rounded out 2023 with five consecutive victories, including the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Making her seasonal return in a sloppy renewal of the GI La Troienne S. May 3, the Brad Cox trainee came home 3 3/4 lengths ahead of Free Like a Girl (El Deal) and Pretty Mischievous farther back in third. The 5-year-old daughter of Lockdown registered her most recent work at Churchill Downs, covering five furlongs in :59 2/5 June 1. According to the home team, it was exactly what they wanted. “It was impressive,” said assistant Blake Cox. “She kind of caught come company and was rocking around there pretty good. She was doing it in hand and she's very happy. She's ready for Saturday. She trained up [at Saratoga] all last summer and did well and she likes the Oklahoma [training track] a lot.” Idiomatic won her only start at Saratoga in last summer's GI Personal Ensign S. “She is just the model of consistency, no doubt,” added Cox. “There's not many like her, and she makes our jobs easier. You're very confident in here every time you lead her over. Pretty Mischievous is a very good filly, and obviously we'll see how we break, but we're planning to break running and go from there.” Standing in the champion's way is Pretty Mischievous, who annexed a trio of Grade I wins in 2023-the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn S. and Test S. After rounding out the season with a runner-up finish in the GI Cotillion S. at Parx, the Godolphin homebred looks to post her first victory since this venue last summer. “She's doing well,” said trainer Brendan Walsh. “She came out of the last race good and we were happy enough with her. She should move forward from it. I think we were a little compromised by the wet track [at Churchill]. She's not quite her best on it and that's been proven in the past. “From a fitness point of view, she's been working and doing very well and looks fantastic. Hopefully, we get a nice, dry track and have no excuses. That's all we want.” Turf Ticket Led By a Competitive Manhattan Options abound in Saturday's 1 3/16-mile GI Manhattan S. Among them, Godolphin sends out the Grade I/Group 1 winning Charlie Appleby-trained duo of Nation's Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Measured Time (GB) (Frankel {GB}). SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – So far, a colt named Mindframe (Constitution) has been nothing short of mind blowing. Two starts. Two wins. By a combined margin of 21 1/4 lengths. His connections think so much of him that start No. 3 will be the GI Belmont S. Saturday at Saratoga. Trainer Todd Pletcher and co-owner Mike Repole are confident the lightly raced horse will make a credible showing in the 1 1/4-mile Belmont. Despite having little experience, Mindframe was made the 7-2 second choice by New York Racing Association linemaker David Aragona. Mindframe broke his maiden by 13 3/4 lengths on the same day that stablemate Fierceness was dominating the GI Florida Derby. In his second start, on GI Kentucky Derby day, he dominated an allowance optional claimer, winning by 7 1/2 lengths. If Mindframe were to do more of the same in the Belmont, Pletcher and company might really have something. “He could become the freshman that is the star on the varsity,” Repole, who owns Mindframe along with Vinnie and Teresa Viola's St. Elias Stable, said by phone. “If he wins this race, we might have something really special, something we haven't seen too many times.” Mindframe will start the Belmont from post position nine and will have jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. on board. He is the only horse in here that has never run in a stakes race. The water is considerably deeper, but Pletcher and Repole are betting Mindframe can swim. “We know he fits,” Repole said. “Whether he comes in first by five or fifth by 10, he fits. We are the freshest horse in the race. Is that an advantage or a disadvantage? I guess we'll find out Saturday.” Speaking about Fierceness… Fierceness (City of Light), the well-beaten favorite in the G1 Kentucky Derby continues to be a work in frustration for the people who work the closest with him. “He has,” Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said when asked if the colt has been a head scratcher. “He has been brilliant at times.” And not so good at others. Pletcher pulled the plug on the G1 Belmont S. for Fierceness after deciding the horse needed more time after his 15th place in the Run for the Roses. Fierceness' new target is the G1 Haskell Invitational S. at Monmouth Park on July 20. Fierceness won the Eclipse Award for best 2-year-old colt last year after a 6 1/4-length win in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Following an up-and-down winter in Florida, Fierceness went to Louisville as the favorite off a record 13 1/2-length win in the GI Florida Derby. Then, the Derby dud. Now, a regroup. “At the end of the day, putting these horses in spots where they are ready and can win has always been what I want to do and what Todd wants to do,” owner Mike Repole said. And that is not where Fierceness is right now. He is a horse, Pletcher and Repole said, that needs more time between races. He has continued to gallop every day on the Oklahoma Training Track. He is healthy. He's getting ready to race; he just wasn't ready for the Belmont. “He has been one that isn't as consistent as normal horses with that much talent can be,” Pletcher said. “Hopefully, it's something he will regain with a little bit of time from the Derby to the Haskell.” Moving forward, that seems to be the new blueprint for Fierceness. Race, then take a boatload of time between the next one. “Let's not give up on Fierceness,” Repole said. Seize the Grey | Sarah Andrew Brown won't feel the pressure There is no extra pressure on trainer Chad Brown. He has the 9-5 morning line favorite in Saturday's GI Belmont S. morning line favorite in Sierra Leone (Gun Runner). What could make things even more stressful is Brown grew up down the road in Mechanicville, 16 miles from Saratoga Race Course. “I don't approach the race any different,” Brown said outside his barn on the Oklahoma Training Track. “I know there will be a lot more interest, but I don't want to be distracted.” Sierra Leone was expected to do big things in the GI Kentucky Derby and he did. However, it was an agonizing finish when the horse just missed, losing by a nose to Mystik Dan (Goldencents). That's part of the game every trainer most likely will endure at some point. “Losing the Kentucky Derby was very disappointing,” Brown said. “With horse racing, or any professional sport, you better be prepared for the worst. Anything can happen in the big games. You could lose a championship game by a one kick, one shot missed, you could run out of time on the clock, a photo finish. You really have to be prepared for that if you are going to play at the top of any sport.” Lukas feeling the love The good wishes started the first day Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas arrived in Saratoga last Saturday. And it hasn't stopped. Lukas, forever young at the age of 88, accompanied GI Preakness winner Seize the Grey to the track each day as he prepared him for Saturday's GI Belmont Stakes. Exercise riders aboard other horses shout out congratulations to Lukas as do people walking by on the Oklahoma Training Track. Seize the Grey became the seventh Preakness win for Lukas; overall, he has 15 Triple Crown race victories. It has been a constant barrage of well wishes to Lukas and his striking grey horse. “Well, it's a great feeling knowing you have accomplished something, that has gotten everyone's interest” Lukas said outside his barn at the Oklahoma. “But I've been there. I have had the experience. I take it more in stride now. As you get older, you realize the ups and downs in this business come real quick. Everything can be beautiful one day and tomorrow you can be nowhere.” Saturday, Lukas saddles Seize the Grey in the GI Belmont S. A trio of fillies shared the fastest eighth-mile time during Friday's session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. All three, working before a downpour delayed the tail end of the fourth session for about thirty minutes, breezed their eighth in :9.4. Out earliest of the bunch, a Florida-bred daughter of Bucchero (hip 568) consigned by Cruzin' Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent. The filly, an $8,000 yearling buy from the OBS Winter Mixed Sale last year, is a half to MSP Ek Haseena (Songandaprayer), herself the dam of G3 Boutique Group Saudi Derby winner Commissioner King (Commissioner). Another Florida-bred filly, hip 657 (The Big Beast) is consigned by Iran Faria Corporation LLC and sold for $6,500 at the same OBS Winter Mixed Sale. Dam Force of Passion is a half to MGSW Pontchatrain (War Front). The only Kentucky-bred filly of the trio, hip 624 (Justify) was a considerably more expensive buy, first bringing $225,000 as a weanling at Fasig-Tipton November in 2022 and then coming under the hammer once more as a yearling at Keeneland September for $275,000. Consigned here by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, hip 624 is out of a daughter of GI Kentucky Oaks winner Summerly who last sold to WinStar Farm for $3.3m out of FTKNOV in 2006. Two more fillies, both from first-crop stallions, shared the fastest quarter-mile breeze of the day with hip 569 (Complexity) and hip 633 (Win Win Win) each working in :20.4. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — In his 35 years as a horse trainer, Brett Creighton has never once entered a horse in a Grade I race. There's a reason for that. “I just never had the opportunity I guess,” the 62-year-old Creighton said in a matter-of-fact way through an easy Arkansas drawl as he stood on the backstretch at Saratoga Race Course. That all changes on Saturday when Creighton saddles Frost Free (Frosted), the best horse he's ever had, in the GI Woody Stephens S. at Saratoga, part of the blockbuster GI Belmont S. card that features nine stakes races–six of them GIs–worth $6.55 million. A field of 10 has been entered for the seven-furlong race, named for the legendary trainer who won five consecutive G1 Belmont S. from 1982-86. Creighton, a former rodeo rider in his youth in Arkansas, has been training since 1989. According to Equibase, he has 1,346 career starts and 138 wins. This year, he has four wins in 22 starts, two by Frost Free. Before Frost Free came along, Creighton had minor success with a horse named Humble Smarty, who had 19 wins in 90 starts. He ran from 2006-14 and Creighton was the trainer for most of them. Best finish? He won several black-type races. Brett Creighton | Sarah Andrew In his last start, Frost Free won the GIII Chick Lang S. at Pimlico as the 9-5 favorite. That was the first graded stakes race Creighton ever won. When it happened, there was no wild victory dance in the winner's circle, no crazy celebration. That's not what Creighton is all about. “At the time, it was just another normal day,” Creighton said. “I mean, don't get me wrong, it was all good. It just hadn't sunk in.” “He is all about the horse,” Danny Keene, whose Keene Thoroughbreds LLC own Frost Free, said by phone from Arkansas. “I guarantee you he is as honest and trustworthy as they come. When it comes to the horses, he is like an old mother hen. If they get a little blemish on them, he goes worrying about them.” The 79-year-old Keene purchased Frost Free for $100,000 at the Texas Thoroughbred Association's 2-year-old in training sale in April of 2023. In eight career starts, he has three wins, a second and two thirds. Keene bought Friendswood Farm, a training center in Hot Springs, Ark. about eight years ago. That's where he met Creighton, who was working there. He decided to give him a chance to train some horses for him and the two have been together ever since. Creighton drove the van from Baltimore to Saratoga Springs soon after the Chick Lang. He and a groom have been here just short of two weeks. After winning that race going gate-to-wire, the decision was made to try the Woody Stephens. Jose Ortiz will ride. “Mr. Keene said 'let's go,' so here we are,” Creighton said. “He pays the bills. This horse has been doing really well. He's fast. He deserves a shot.” Frost Free raised some eyebrows when he worked a bullet four furlongs in 47 seconds (1/24) on Sunday. Creighton said he was looking for a 49, and had some concern, but the horse put those to rest. Creighton said Frost Free bounced out of the work like it never happened. In the Woody Stephens, Frost Free is 15-1 on the morning line and will trying seven furlongs for the first time. Keene, who began investing in Thoroughbreds about 14 years ago, has three graded stakes wins on his resume. The other two belong to Texas Chrome, who won the GIII Super Derby and GIII Oklahoma Derby in 2016. If he is going to get that first GI, he knows he'll have to beat some tough foes in the Woody Stephens. “There are some awful good horses in there from all over the country,” Keene said. “You never know.” Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will run the 7-2 morning-line favorite in Prince of Monaco (Speightstown), who is making his first start since a fifth-place finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Flavien Prat will ride. Book'em Danno (Bucchero), trained by Derek Ryan and to be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., is the 9-2 second choice on the morning line. When last seen, he was second, beaten a head by GI Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) in the GIII Saudi Derby. Imagination | Sarah Andrew Three colts are coming into the race with 6-1 odds: Valentine Candy (Justify), trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, with jockey Ricardo Santana Jr.; Nash (Medaglia d'Oro) from trainer Brad Cox, who finished second with jockey Florent Geroux to GI Preakness S. winner Seize the Grey (Arrogate) in the GII Pat Day Mile; and that race's third-place-finisher Vlahos (Kantharos) for Chief Stipe O'Neill and jockey Edwin Maldonado. Imagination (Into Mischief), last seen fading to seventh in the Preakness, returns for Baffert and jockey Frankie Dettori and is 10-1 on the morning line. He is 15-1 on the morning line and will be ridden by Eric Cancel. Julie Wood's Voyage (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), who parted ways with Pat Dobbs at the start of the G1 Betfred Derby, will return in the G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot, according to trainer Richard Hannon.
