Sunny Brook Stables' Mr Fisk (Arrogate) hooked up with stablemate Reincarnate (Good Magic) entering the final furlong of Monday's GII Hollywood Gold Cup and pulled away from that rival to register his third graded victory from his last four starts. Wathnan Racing's recent private purchase Subsanador (Arg) (Fortify) won the break and held the advantage passing the stands for the first time, but Juan Hernandez was equally positive aboard Reincarnate from the inside barrier and he sent the 4-year-old into the lead passing the winning post with a circuit of the Great RIP to traverse. The well-backed Judge Miller (Curlin) took a sit out three deep, while Mr Fisk improved a spot into fourth rounding the clubhouse turn. There was little change in the running order over the course of the next couple of furlongs, but Kazushi Kimura allowed Mr Fisk to slowly pinch ground at the fence and was poised to strike in behind the leading trio as they hit the far turn. Reincarnate held the call, and when Subsanador began to throw out some distress signals leaving the quarter pole, Kimura drove Mr Fisk through that opening and the battle was joined. The stablemates were in lock-step into the final furlong, but Mr Fisk did the better of the two in the deciding stages and proved a comfortable winner in the end. Mr Fisk was vanned off the track and taken to the barn area for evaluation after Kimura reported that the colt felt 'off' on the gallop-out. “Kazushi Kimura said it was nothing major, but he says he just felt a little off, nothing obvious,” said trainer Bob Baffert, winning his 10th Gold Cup and 350th Santa Anita stakes race overall. “We are just being cautious. He was a little bit off so hopefully it's a foot or something. My horses ran great, both of them, one and two like that. But hopefully we will get him back to the barn and right now it sounds minor. “I knew they weren't going very fast, and he was in a good spot . Reincarnate when he gets a lead, he's tough. He showed up. I'm proud of them both. It's too bad we can't celebrate in the winner's circle, but the horse looks like he is going to be fine. That's the good news.” The dead-heat winner of last year's Shared Belief S. at Del Mar, Mr Fisk broke through at the graded level in the GIII Native Diver S. during the Bing Crosby meet in November. The son of War Decree was held up in the SA Derby and came home strongly in the closing stages to finish 1.3 lengths adrift of the winner, Coco Sun, prompting connections to aim for classic glory this weekend. “I think his pattern where he has been getting back and running on, if there’s any silver lining from that, is that he’s been pulling up super from those races,” Kent Jnr said. “He’s still got plenty of petrol left in the tank and he’s been thriving since Adelaide. “He’s put on weight, muscle and just maintained his summer coat. “He had two Brisbane-way gallops on the grass before he left, and I think the horse is flying. So, now we just have a pretty easy week leading in. “Blake Shinn takes the ride and I think he’ll run super; I really think he will.” Meanwhile, a last-start win in a 2000m handicap at Flemington has earned Navy King a shot at Saturday’s Queensland Derby. A jumping future is looming for Group One performer Helena Baby (NZ) (Guillotine) following his 20-length victory in an Open Hurdle trial at Cambridge on Monday. The grey nine-year-old has performed well on the flat for trainer John Bell, winning seven races, including the Listed Opunake Cup (1400m) on two occasions, and placed in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) and Opunake Cup. He has had three unplaced sprint outings this preparation in preparation for making his debut hurdle outing at Te Aroha next Monday, and Bell is looking forward to seeing what he can do over fences on raceday. “Sprinters can make great hurdlers and he we have been working on him for several years (to go jumping),” Bell said. “We have given him a few sprint races and will look to have him in the maiden hurdle at Te Aroha on Monday. “He is a lovely horse, there is not much about him that you don’t like. He went up to Hong Kong and didn’t handle the tracks up there but came back here and performed again with a bit of rain. The more rain the better for him. “We will get him over his first encounter. Nick Downs has done a lot of work on him. Mentally he is quite prepared for anything and we will go day-by-day with the jumping.” Bell said a transition to jumping will help extend Helena Baby’s racing career. “If he wasn’t doing that he would be sitting in the paddock or a clerk of the course, so we might as well endeavour for him to win us a dollar or two and help pay the bills,” he said. Helena Baby will be joined at Te Aroha’s meeting by stablemates Ata Rangi (NZ) (Haradasun) and Curious George (NZ) (Reset). “Ata Rangi is doing well on the flat. He hurdles very well, so that is where he is destined for, but we will run him over 2200m (on Monday). Curious George will be in the 0-1 win Hurdle,” he said. Well-performed sprinter Babylon Berlin (All Too Hard) has remained at home with another winter start on the cards for the multiple Group winner. Connections had considered a Queensland campaign for the six-year-old but opted against the trip with a domestic Group One feature her long-term aim. “She might go to the open sprint at Te Rapa in the middle of June or we could tip her out and get her ready for the Foxbridge Plate (Gr.2, 1200m),” co-trainer and part-owner Ben Foote said. “She might get in foal later this year and then we’ll concentrate on the Railway (Gr.1, 1200m), that’s the plan, so we’ll be doing all the right things by the horse.” A three-time Group Three winner, Babylon Berlin has two placings to her credit in the Ellerslie sprint feature as well as runner-up Group One finishes in The Telegraph (1200m) and BCD Group Sprint (1400m). The daughter of All Too Hard was most recently third in an open 1100m handicap at Trentham. “She came through the race really well, there’s nothing wrong with her at all and she’s in good condition,” Foote said. With training partner and son Ryan, he will have a number of runners at the Cambridge meeting on the synthetic track on Wednesday. Among his better winning chances is the Zoustar filly Mars (NZ), who runs in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race (1300m) off the back of success at Matamata earlier this month with Michael McNab again taking the ride. “I think Mars and Ultimate Focus will both be very strong chances,” Foote said. “Baz Dowling (equine chiropractor) has been doing a bit of work with Mars and she seems to be stretching out really well now. “Ability-wise, she’s certainly a lot better than a Rating 65 horse but with it being a Pearl Series race we’ve decided to have a go for the bonus.” McNab will also partner Ultimate Focus (Smart Missile) from the inside gate in the Waipa Earthworks Handicap (970m). The son of Smart Missile drew attention to his prospects with a resuming run for second over the course and distance earlier this month. “I do quite like So Brassy as well, she has been working well and might be the best longshot as far as a little nibble goes,” Foote said. To say apprentice jockey Liam Kauri has been through a lot in the last couple of years would be an understatement. The 24-year-old rider was absent from the winner’s stall for almost three years before his victory aboard Royal Flower (NZ) (Proisir) at Woodville on Sunday in the Murray Contractors & Quotation Foodtrailer (1400m), and he has faced several challenges in that time. “It has been about three years since my last win and I have had four surgeries,” he said. “They found a hole in my heart. I was born with it, but they didn’t know about it until after a fall I had and they gave me a scan. I had surgery and now I am fitter than I have ever been. “It’s been close to 12 months (since the surgery), but it has taken about six months to get my fitness back. “I also had other injuries – I had to get plates put into my wrist and a rod taken out of my leg, there have been a whole lot of surgeries since my last win.” Sunday’s victory was a tonic for Laurie, who said he almost forgot what it was like to win a race, and he was delighted to capture that feeling once more aboard the Gail Temperton-trained Royal Flower, which was apt given he rode his first winner for the Foxton trainer. “I had a gallop on the horse a few days earlier and I knew she could handle a tougher run than most,” he said. “With it being so long, it almost felt like getting my first win again. I forgot what it felt like and if it would even happen again.” Kauri is enjoying being back in the saddle, but it wasn’t a vocation he has always been particularly fond of, even with a jockey turned trainer father in Paddy Kauri. “My Dad was a jockey,” he said. “I didn’t like horses until I left high school, and I didn’t ride until I was about 18 or 19. “My first job was with Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott, and they wanted me to go and learn a bit more, I didn’t even know how to put a head collar on, so I then went to my current boss, Suzy Gordon, and learned how to ride.” Kauri is hoping he will quickly add to his win tally when he heads to Awapuni’s synthetic meeting on Thursday where he will ride two horses for his employer. “I have got two booked for Thursday – Justaskpercy, who has been very consistent and is looking to win on the synthetic, and Doubtful Sound, who is coming up to 1400m which is his ideal trip,” he said. “I have enjoyed some of the synthetic racing. The track seems to play pretty fair, they come off the front and from behind a lot of the time, but it obviously comes down to the pace they went.” While Kauri said he is taking things in his stride with his return, he still holds major aspirations. “I have always wanted to be Champion Apprentice but there are a lot of good apprentices there at the moment,” he said. “I am just trying to chip away and let things happen.” View the full article

Being a half-brother to undefeated Horse of the Year Flightline (Tapit), the expectations were naturally high, and Hronis Racing, Summer Wind Equine and Bill Farish's EAGLES FLIGHT (c, 3, Curlin–Feathered, by Indian Charlie) proved equal to the task, overcoming something of a tricky trip to join Flightline as 'TDN Rising Stars.' As low as 3-5 as the horses were about to depart the paddock, Eagles Flight eased into 4-5 and remained there before a further market drift saw him jump at odds of 11-10. Not the quickest away from the two hole, the scopey bay colt brushed lightly at the break with the rail-drawn Atitlan (The Factor), then beaten for speed and was ridden along from about seventh, but not too far away from the leaders down the backstretch. In tight for a stride or two at that stage, Eagles Flight was always traveling for Flightline's jockey Flavien Prat and he was angled away from the inside and into about the three path at the three-eighths. Taking a gap professionally between rivals while gaining good ground at the quarter pole, Eagles Flight rolled up outside of 2-1 Santarena (Omaha Beach), a three-time maiden, but who earned a 93 Beyer for a runner-up effort two back. The chalk wanted to lay in approaching the eighth pole, but once straightened away by Prat, he leveled out beautifully and won going away before galloping out strongly. The Pick 6 carryover of $44,200 will be transferred to the Thursday, June 6 program at Saratoga Race Course after a pair of races included in the multi-race wager were taken off the turf on Monday's card. Following the conclusion of Race 4–the opening leg of the Pick 6 wager–and a weather delay which included significant rainfall, the New York Racing Association, Inc. took Race 6 and Race 7 off-the-turf. A total of $230,327 in new money was wagered into Monday's Pick 6 pool at a carryover takeout rate of 24%. Given United Tote is unable to change the takeout rate in the tote system after the wager begins, NYRA has added a total of $21,000 in seed money to the pool which brings the wager down to a takeout rate of 14.88%, which is below the customary non-carryover Pick 6 takeout rate of 15%. Jockey Jaime Rodriguez, winner of the 2024 Preakness S. with Seize the Grey, won twice on Monday's Memorial Day holiday program to clinch his first riding title at historic Pimlico Race Course, while Brittany Russell left Old Hilltop with her third straight leading trainer crown at the Preakness Meet. Rodriguez won 12 times, three more than runners-up Jorge Ruiz and Sheldon Russell. “It was a tight race for me. Everybody was pretty much even. It was fun,” Rodriguez said. “All the horses ran good.” It is the fifth riding title in Maryland for Rodriguez, who earlier this year won Laurel Park's winter Heritage Meet and was second to then-apprentice J.G. Torrealba at the subsequent spring stand. He previously registered multi-win days at Pimlico May 9, 10 and 26, and also won once each on the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. and GI Preakness S. programs May 17-18. Russell finished with eight wins from 35 starters, including two-win days on May 12 and 16. Jose Corrales won twice Monday to move into a tie for second with Kieron Magee at six wins. “It is cool. We kind of point for the meet,” Russell said. “It's just a fun meet for us. My team works so hard. It's a lot of work for them. I do have a string here, but we run a lot of horses. I'm just proud of everybody. Everybody worked really hard, and I feel like we deserve it.” Among Russell's victories was Apple Picker in the $100,000 Skipat S. on the Preakness undercard. Third on the same program with Prince of Jericho in the GIII Chick Lang S., Russell earned $7,000 for having the fourth-most points in stakes races in the Maryland Jockey Club's annual Preakness Weekend trainer bonus series. She won the top prize of $25,000 for having the most points in non-stakes races. In all she started 23 horses at Pimlico from May 16 to 18, including 19 over Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness days. Married to Sheldon Russell with two children, Brittany Russell credits assistants Luis Barajas at Laurel, Emma Wolfe at Fair Hill, Sam Hopkins at Delaware and Damon Gladden at Pimlico for being instrumental in the stable's success. Russell made history in 2023 as the first woman to lead the annual standings in Maryland with 118 wins at Laurel and Pimlico, setting season highs across the board with 687 starters, 177 wins, 141 seconds, 96 thirds and $7,996,867 in purse earnings, ranking 11th nationally in wins and 16th in money won. It is Russell's first meet title this year and seventh overall, four coming at Pimlico. Through the first five months of 2024 she has 52 wins from 247 starters with more than $2.4 million in purses earned.
