  1. Stephen Autridge has been well-represented during the winter period by bonny mare Caitlyns Wish, and she will be looking for a return to the winner’s circle in the Arawa Park Hotel Rotorua 1230 on Saturday. The Belardo four-year-old had been a model of consistency through her preparation with three wins and a minor placing from five starts, before track conditions weren’t to suit at Te Rapa where she finished at the tail of the field behind a dominant Wewillrock. “They ran two seconds quicker than when she won the start before, and she really appreciates rain on the day,” Autridge said. “That’s what it’s looking like we’re getting on Saturday, so fingers crossed that will be the case for her.” With her regular rider back in the saddle in Maria Sanson, Caitlyns Wish will take three kilograms off her 59.5kg impost, while last start Listed winner Casino Princess sits on top with 60kg. “We’ve drawn one, so you would think she would end up in front on the fence. It shouldn’t be too concerning on the rail by race three, but she could always come out a couple if she has too,” Autridge said. “This would’ve been a big weight rise, so we’re lucky to be claiming three.” The mare will be joined by older stablemate Thunder in the open contest, who will drop back in distance with the impending rain also to be his preference. “We only put him in because we knew it would be that heavy, it’ll be more like a 1400 or 1500,” Autridge said. “He could be getting home well late.” Back at his Matamata base, Autridge was pleased to welcome back talented fillies Still Bangon and Livid Sky ahead of their four-year-old campaigns. Still Bangon picked up a well-deserved victory in the Gr.3 Eulogy Stakes (1600m) in mid-December, before placing in the Gr.2 Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (2050m) and the Gr.3 Sunline Vase (2100m). Her preparation culminated with the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m), where she finished back in the field. A daughter of Proisir, Livid Sky also made a strong account of herself this term, placing in the Gr.3 Bonecrusher Stakes (1600m), Gr.2 Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (2050m) and Gr.2 Karyn & David Ellis Fillies Classic (2000m), while also finishing midfield in her grand final, the New Zealand Oaks. “Still Bangon will trial at Te Rapa on August 5, and Livid Sky will be about a month later. They’ve both done really well spelling and look really good,” Autridge said. “Looking back, 2400m may have been too far for them but they’d had a fairly hectic time and might have just been coming to the end of it in the Oaks. “This time in, we’re not concentrating on getting to that distance for races anyway, they’ll be mile to 2000 horses I would think and hopefully they’ll come up in the spring. “Sometimes you have to wait for the autumn, you’ve got to have the patience.” View the full article
  2. A special standalone sale on Gavelhouse Plus will give breeders a rare opportunity to secure a trans-Tasman Group One winner. The auction of Prowess will run from the 2nd to the 8th of August on Gavelhouse Plus. Trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood for a family syndicate headed by Dean Skipper, Prowess won eight of her 12 starts including five consecutive black-type victories as a three-year-old. Prowess was a $230,000 yearling purchase at Karaka in 2021 from the draft of breeders Hallmark Stud, and she turned that into more than $1.65 million in prizemoney in her glittering career. “She’s taken us on an amazing ride and it’s definitely a shame that it’s coming to an end,” Skipper said. “We have some mixed emotions about putting her up for sale. “But the way we look at it is that we were just so fortunate to have had one as good as her, and now she’s ready to go on to the next stage of her career. “She’s fit and well and a happy horse. She could probably even have made it back to the racetrack if we wanted to wait a bit longer. But she’s at a premium stage of her life to start her breeding career now, and we always set it up so that we would sell her at around this time and have her in the best possible condition for that.” Prowess was at the forefront of the meteoric rise of her sire Proisir, whose service fee soared from $17,500 to $70,000 after siring five Group One winners in a single season in 2022-23 – trans-Tasman stars Prowess and Legarto, plus elite New Zealand winners Levante, Pier and Dark Destroyer. Proisir has gone on to achieve blockbuster Book 1 averages of $188,947 at Karaka 2023 and $274,444 at Karaka 2024. The esteem for Prowess, her family and her sire was spectacularly illustrated in January when a full-sister to Prowess topped the Book 1 sale at $1.6 million. “It was unbelievable to see the full-sister sell for such a big price at Karaka earlier in the year,” Skipper said. “It shows how highly the family is regarded now, and it’s a great reward for the hard work that Mark Baker and the Hallmark team have put in. “Based on that, I guess we could say that we got Prowess quite cheaply in hindsight. But it was still quite a heady price to pay at the time.” Prowess wasted no time in making that $230,000 purchase price look like a worthwhile investment. She made a big impression with a trial win at Taupo as an autumn two-year-old in April 2022, then backed that up on raceday with a runaway romp by nine lengths at Wanganui in her only juvenile start. “We knew from quite early on that we might have something a bit special on our hands,” Skipper said. “Robert Wellwood texted me after the trial, telling me to watch the replay and then give him a call. I figured she must have done something, and I was blown away when I watched it. “Then we were on course at Wanganui for her debut, and we were a bit overwhelmed when she won it the way she did. We didn’t even really celebrate – we were just awestruck.” But it was as a three-year-old that Prowess really made her name. After spring placings in the Group Three Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) and against males in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), Prowess embarked on a winning sequence that spanned five feature races between New Year’s Day and the end of March. She kicked off with a comfortable win in the Gr.2 Auckland Guineas (1600m), then produced a scintillating turn of foot to stun a star-studded field in the $1 million Karaka Million 3YO Classic (1600m). After returning to three-year-old fillies’ company with a five-length romp in the Gr.2 David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic (2000m), Prowess took on older horses at weight-for-age and recorded a rare win by a three-year-old filly in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2050m). James and Wellwood then set their sights on Sydney, and Prowess produced perhaps the most impressive performance of her career with a three-length blitz in the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill. An injury-curtailed four-year-old campaign saw Prowess win the Group Two Crystal Mile (1600m) in Melbourne and place in the Gr.3 Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (1400m). “We started to realise just how good she was when she won the Auckland Guineas, and it was a picket fence from there and she just kept raising the bar,” Skipper said. “Roger James has been training for a long time and has had some great horses in his stable, so when he started saying she was up there with the best he’d ever trained, it was incredibly exciting. “One thing about her career that was very special was that we managed to capture the attention of a few people who weren’t previously into racing. They got behind her and were opening up TAB accounts so that they could bet on her. That was another part of the experience that we really enjoyed. “It was just so much fun and we can’t thank everyone enough – the vets, the farriers and all the team at Kingsclere Stables. They’re the ones getting up at 3am and putting in all that hard work. We just paid the bills and got to enjoy the end result. “She gave us some incredible memories, and now we’re looking forward to seeing what she can do in the broodmare paddock.” View the full article
  3. Melbourne Cup runner-up Soulcombe. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) runner-up Soulcombe is unlikely to run this spring. The rising six-year-old, who was sidelined earlier this year with an off-fore leg injury during his preparation for the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m), has been making good progress in his rehabilitation. However, managing part-owner Ozzie Kheir told Racing.com that the spring carnival is approaching too quickly. “He’s in light work at the moment, but he is highly unlikely to be back for the spring,” Kheir said. “He’s rehabbing as well as we could hope, but the injury just came at a bad time as far as getting him right for the spring. “We’ll just take our time and let him tell us, as you can’t rush coming back from an injury like that.” Horse racing news View the full article
  4. Smokin’ Romans ridden by Ethan Brown wins the 2022 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. (Photo by Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Smokin’ Romans will be seeking a return to form as he lines up for a 2000-metre challenge at Flemington this Saturday. The seven-year-old clinched the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) back in 2022 and is now aiming for his first victory since that memorable Group 1 win. “He’s been up at Ballarat and is coming off a slow build-up,” said Jack Turnbull, assistant to trainer Ciaron Maher. “He had a long spell over summer after a couple of heavy seasons, and this campaign, being winter, we’re trying to get some confidence back and he’s brimming with confidence. I know he hasn’t won, but he’s hit the board a couple of times, and every time Jaylah (Kennedy, who rides again on Saturday) gets off him, she’s just rapt with how well he’s going.” Watch Smokin’ Romans win the 2022 Turnbull Stakes Horse racing news View the full article
  5. Top End trainer Tayarn Halter will be aiming to win the $135,000 NT Derby (2050m) with three-year-old gelding Super Defense on Day 4 of the Darwin Cup Carnival at Fannie Bay It’s been 30 years since Top End trainer Tayarn Halter won the Palmerston Sprint (1200m) with The Universe. The $135,000 Palmerston and the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2050m) are the Darwin Cup Carnival’s two big races, but there is also a healthy respect for the NT Derby (2050m). Halter has a runner in the $135,000 three-year-old event for only the second time, with Super Defense lining up at Fannie Bay on Saturday. Mazzaro was Halter’s other Derby runner in 2018 – he finished 12th after coming ninth in the Darwin Guineas (1600m). Super Defense is a decent Derby hope after finishing second behind Kym Healy’s He’s Maverick over 1300m (BM66) in June and in the $75,000 Guineas a fortnight ago. Apprentice Jade Hampson couldn’t have done much more to get Super Defense over the line on each occasion. The gelding had four starts for Rosehill trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, which included victory in a 1610m Orange maiden in February. “I was trolling through the online auctions and noticed that Gerald was selling him,” Halter said. “I had a look at his form, he’s a nice young miler, so I put a bid in and was successful. “He’d already had four weeks in the paddock when I bought him. “I let him get over the trip to Darwin, then put him into work. “He’s honest, he handles the dirt and doesn’t mind the kick-back. “I’ve been lucky in both of his runs, he’s drawn the fence and he’s had a nice position. “It’s a tough race, a very good Derby field, and we’ve drawn 10 – we come into seven if the emergencies don’t start. “He’s got to be in there with a chance, so hopefully we can pull it off.” Halter, who has a racing background that stretches back to the 1980s, actually won the Palmerston Sprint a year after acquiring her trainer’s license. A former jockey, Halter, would love to win another big race during Carnival. “The Palmerston is the biggest race I’ve won – fifth is as close as I got in the Darwin Cup,” she said. “You always need an element of luck in big races, it plays a big part. “There’s always hard luck stories in those races because they’re difficult to win. “Even He’s Maverick got checked early in the Guineas. “Super Defense looked a chance in the Guineas, but Kym’s horse finished over the top of him. “Hopefully, we can turn the tables in the Derby, but there are also plenty of other good horses in the race.” Sheila Arnold’s Gifted Gamer, third in the $500,000 Platinum Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in April for Melbourne trainer Patrick Payne, was the $3.40 favourite with online bookmakers on Thursday despite not having a start at Fannie Bay. Having hit the line strongly in the Guineas, He’s Maverick ($5), Super Defense ($10) and Phil Cole’s third-placed Rhesus ($5.50) are expected to make an impact this weekend. With the Chief Minister’s Cup and Toyota Finance Cup in his pocket, Victorian trainer Neil Dyer will start Unquestionably ($5.50) in the Derby. Horse racing news View the full article

  9. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In the fall of every year, Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse is out on the recruiting trail. He looks for the best four-legged athletes he can find. He goes to Lexington to seek out young talent. If Thursday's sixth race at Saratoga Race Course– a $100,000 maiden special weight at 5 1/2 furlongs on the Mellon Turf–is any indication, coach Casse may have found a couple of blue chippers at the 2023 Keeneland Association September Yearling Sale. Tracy Farmer's Abientot (Not This Time) finished strongly to win the race for 2-year-old fillies by a half-length over her stablemate, Gary Barber's Will Reign (War of Will). Both horses went off at odds of 5-1 in the field of 10. “I try to bring some of my better young horses here,” Casse said after pictures were taken in the Saratoga winner's circle. “If you see me bringing them, it shows you they have shown me something where I feel they deserve a shot up here. It doesn't always work.” For the most part, things have worked out just fine this year for Casse and his young horses. According to Equibase, Casse has now won 16 races with 2-year-olds this year in 84 starts. Will Reign's runner-up finish gives Casse 11 seconds in baby races. The process started at Keeneland where Casse takes pride in being able to analyze a young horse and tell if it is one that might help him down the road. “I just thought they were both athletes,” Casse said when he saw both Abientot and Will Reign at Keeneland. “When I look at horses, it doesn't matter if they are big, small, tall, long … I just look for athletes and pedigrees. I have been doing this for 45 years. When you write an article, you know when it's a good article or a bad one. Tina [Casse's wife] goes with me and we make a $300,000, $400,000 or $500,000 decision on a horse after looking at it for two or three minutes. It's what I do. To me, the recruiting is what I enjoy the most.” In the case of Abientot, Casse said that owner Farmer enlists a team to look at horses at the Keeneland sale. “Then they come to me and I say yes or no to them,” Casse said. There was more sentiment involved with Will Reign, whose sire War of Will won the 2019 GI Preakness Stakes for the Casse/Barber team and also was victorious on the lawn, winning the GI Maker's Mile Stakes at Keeneland in 2020. “We went out and bought a bunch of War of Wills because we felt like Gary Barber wanted to give him his best shot, and we did that,” Casse said. Abientot, who was ridden by Dylan Davis, was one of three fillies in the race to have started. She took the lead inside the sixteenth pole and then had enough left to hold off her rallying stablemate. The final time was 1:03.22 and Abientot paid $13.20. She was bred by Killora Stud, LLC. “It's a huge advantage,” Casse said when asked what having already raced means. “It's why I try to get starts into them. I figure for a horse that hasn't started, they need to be about 15% better than horses that have started.” Abientot will likely return to the Spa in the Bolton Landing Stakes Aug. 18. Casse will look for another maiden event for Will Reign, who was ridden Thursday by Flavien Prat. Both horses did what Casse had hoped they would do when he first eyeballed them at the Keeneland sale. They showed athleticism, they showed promise. And one got to the winner's circle. “The filly that won is a little thing,” Casse said. “I said to the valet, 'I can't see over many when I saddle.' You know they are not very big if I can see over them. But, if size meant anything, a rabbit could not outrun a cow.” 6th-Saratoga, $100,000, Msw, 7-18, 2yo, f, 5 1/2fT, 1:03.22, fm, 1/2 length. ABIENTOT (f, 2, Not This Time–Ready Ready Ready, by More Than Ready) was fourth in her six-furlong debut over the Aqueduct turf June 21. The 5-1 shot settled in mid-pack down the backstretch. She rolled into contention with a five-wide move into the stretch and found her best gear late to spurt to the lead and hold off the late-rushing Will Reign (War of Will) by a half-length. Favored Brindi (Ire) (No Nay Never) was third. Good Conduct (Without Parole {GB}) trailed for much of the contest and made a strong belated rally to be fifth. Abientot, a $210,000 Keeneland September yearling, is a half-sister to Mr. Hustle (Declaration of War), Ch. 2yo Colt-Can, MSW-Can, SP-USA, $303,589; and to Malibu Coast (Malibu Moon), GSP, $139,300. Ready Ready Ready, who was purchased by Killora Stud with Abientot in utero for $130,000 at the 2021 Keeneland November sale, produced a colt by Nyquist last year and was bred back to Uncle Mo. The mare is a half-sister to the late graded winner Laoban (Uncle Mo). Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $60,400. 10. Alfred Pais's homebred Brickyard Ride (Clubhouse Ride–Brickyard Helen, by Southern Image), a multiple graded stakes winner who campaigned from ages two to seven, has been retired and will stand the 2025 season at Rancho San Miguel in Central California. His introductory fee will be $4,000, live foal guarantee. “He had wicked speed, and he stuck around for a long time,” said trainer Craig Lewis, who trained both Brickyard Ride and his sire, Clubhouse Ride. “He was a very, very talented horse who loved to train, and he loved the competition, just like his daddy.” Last seen finishing second earlier this year to The Chosen Vron (Vronsky) in the California Cup Sprint Stakes, Brickyard Ride's eight black-type victories include the GII San Carlos Stakes and two editions of the GIII Kona Gold Stakes. He retires with a record of 31-13-2-6 and earnings of $925,477. “We are blessed to have such a talented athlete join our stallion roster,” said Rancho San Miguel's Tom Clark. “As has been observed by many smart horsemen over the years, you cannot coach speed.” Brickyard Ride is available for inspection at Rancho San Miguel, where he will stand as the property of Pais. 11. 11th-Colonial Downs, $60,000, Msw, 7-18, 2yo, 5 1/2fT, 1:03.91, gd, 6 lengths. CURAHEE (g, 2, War of Will–Blameitonthemusic, by Blame) graduated with a professional six-length tally over the Colonial turf course Thursday. The even-money favorite, looking to become the fourth winner for his freshman sire (by War Front), broke sharply and was on the lead in the early strides. He sat a pressing second as Lazio (Bucchero) had the lead through an opening quarter in :22.17. Curahee stuck a head in front at the top of the lane and skipped clear to the wire. Curahee, a $70,000 purchase at the OBS March sale earlier this year, chased the pace before fading to sixth in his five-furlong debut over the Laurel main track June 23. He is the only foal out of Blameitonthemusic, who died in 2022. The mare was a half-sister to graded winner She Can't Sing (Bernardini), who sold for $1.1 million as part of the Lothenbach dispersal at the Fasig-Tipton February sale this year. Earlier Thursday, War of Will was represented by Will Reign, who was second on his debut at Saratoga. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by FanDuel TV. 13. By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk In a wide open race, Sam Thornley reckons he’s a chance of securing back-to-back wins in the coveted Darren DeFilippi Memorial Junior Drivers’ race at Addington tonight. A capacity field of trotters will line up in the 2600m event, with Thornley’s drive Dark Ghana coming in for a lot of support, after opening at $15. It has been backed into $7.50, just behind Luvavici, KD Royalty and Paige, all at $7. “It seems wide open and a lot of them have had bad luck in recent races so I couldn’t really pick a winner,” says Thornley. This will be just Dark Ghana’s fourth start. The five-year-old Le Pres gelding won impressively on debut for trainer Chris Morrison at Ashburton and followed that up with two close-up performances, running on well to finish fifth and a fourth at Addington. “I’ve never driven the horse before,” says Thornley, “but he came home good on the clock the other day so should be a chance.” Our Pinocchio ($9), Majesdix ($9), and Zoltan Boscik ($9.50) are also favoured in the market. An accomplished junior driver, Darren DeFilippi died at just 19 in a motor accident coming home from the Geraldine races in 1995. “People say how he was such a good fella and so talented,” says Thornley. Darren’s parents Colin and Julie DeFilippi traditionally hand out the Darren De Filippi Memorial Junior Drivers Challenge Trophy to the winning driver. Last year Thornley won it for the first time with the Robbie Holmes-trained Light Of Da Moon. “It would be great to win it again,” says Thornley, “and it’s great to have a drive in it, with a horse that is a chance.” Tonight will see the 29th running of the race. Matty Williamson is the only driver to have won it three times, while Gavin Smith, Mark Hurrell, and Sarah O’Reilly have all won it twice. Thornley is hoping to join that list at 6.14 tonight. 14. With the Thoroughbred meet set to open Aug. 16, Remington Park in Oklahoma City has installed 5,500 linear feet of new inner turf railing, replacing the traditional aluminum one, the track said in a release Thursday. “We purchased the new rail from Equinox Racing. It is amazing,” said Remington's Executive Vice President of Racing Matt Vance. “Several prominent tracks have gone to this type of rail made from PVC. I recently saw a race from France on YouTube where a horse hit this kind of rail, taking out about 40 feet of the rail, and when all was said and done there wasn't a scratch on the horse or the jockey.” The installation covers the entire seven-eighths of a mile circumference of the turf course and also includes the turf chute that allows for races up to 1 1/8 miles. “We are really excited about this new rail. Not only is it safer, but it is easier to deal with when it comes to changing the starting point for different distances,” said Vance. “It should take half the manpower to change the rail settings in comparison to the old aluminum rail. It's just easier to work with.” The post Remington Park Installs New Turf Rail appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Pedigree/form notes: This Group 3-winning juvenile is the first runner out of an unraced half-sister to the G3 Abernant Stakes and G3 Supreme Stakes winner Double Or Bubble (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and the G3 Chartwell Fillies' Stakes heroine Mix And Mingle (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Her second dam Mango Lady (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) is a winning half-sister to the G1 St Leger and G1 Rheinland-Pokal runner-up High Accolade (GB) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}). Beaten nine lengths when finishing fifth in the G1 Oaks at Epsom last time, Caught U Looking needs to leave that form well behind to make an impact against this class of opposition. CONTENT (IRE) Galileo (Ire)–Mecca's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: This Coolmore homebred is one of three winners from as many runners out of the dual G1 Nunthorpe Stakes heroine Mecca's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), with the others including this year's two-year-old Bedtime Story (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), a 9 1/2-length winner of the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. Mecca's Angel, in turn, is a full-sister to the G3 Chipchase Stakes and G3 Criterion Stakes-winning sire Markaz (Ire). Content is already a black-type winner having struck in the G3 Staffordstown Stud Stakes at the Curragh as a two-year-old, while she added a valuable Group 1 placing to her record when finishing third in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the same course last time. DARE TO DREAM (FR) Camelot (GB)–Debutante (Fr) (Gold Away {Ire}) Sales info: This March foal was offered by co-breeder Ecurie des Monceaux at the Arqana October Yearling Sale and was knocked down to Gavin Hernon for €67,000. Monceaux, Meridian International and Scuderia Waldeck SNC are the breeders on her page. Pedigree/form notes: This filly's dual Listed-placed dam is a half-sister to four black-type winners, including the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes heroine Danedream (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}), plus this year's G2 Queen's Vase scorer and G1 Grand Prix de Paris second Illinois (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). She is also from the family of the G1 Prix Vermeille-winning champion Indian Rose (Fr) (General Holme) and the sires Vert Amande and Le Nain Jaune (Fr). Dare To Dream won the G3 Prix Vanteaux at Longchamp in April and has performed with credit in two subsequent starts up in grade, notably finishing a close-up fifth in last month's G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly. ELIZABETH JANE (IRE) Dubawi (Ire)–Sapphire (Ire) (Medicean {GB}) Pedigree/form notes: This Moyglare Stud homebred is one of four winners out of the G2 British Champions Fillies And Mares Stakes victrix and G1 Pretty Polly Stakes second Sapphire (Ire) (Medicean {GB}), with the others including the G2 Kilboy Estate Stakes third Kiss For A Jewel (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and the dual Group 3-placed Federica Sophia (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Sapphire herself is out of the blue hen Polished Gem (Ire) (Danehill), whose other progeny include star stayer Kyprios (Ire) and the dual G1 Irish St Leger heroine Search For A Song (Ire), both by Galileo (Ire), plus the G1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes winner and sire Free Eagle (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}). Polished Gem, in turn, is out of the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas victrix Trusted Partner (Affirmed). A 'TDN Rising Star' having impressed when making a winning debut at Leopardstown last October, Elizabeth Jane might have needed the run after eight months off when finishing seventh in the Listed Naas Oaks Trial last time. GALILEO DAME (IRE) Galileo Gold (GB)–Two For Tea (Ire) (Mount Nelson {GB}) Sales info: Bred by Tally-Ho Stud, she sold to Blandford Bloodstock for €125,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up Sale. Pedigree/form notes: This filly is the first winner from two runners out of a winning half-sister to the G2 Champions Juvenile Stakes third Alder (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and the G3 1000 Guineas Trial second Radiantly (GB) (Aussie Rules), as well as Fabulae (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), the dam of another Irish Oaks runner in Port Fairy. Galileo Dame–whose third dam is the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup winner Shiva (Jpn) (Hector Protector), a half-sister to the G1 Oaks heroine Light Shift (Kingmambo)–followed her Leopardstown maiden win in April with a fourth-place finish in the Listed Cheshire Oaks and a runner-up effort in the Gowran Classic. HANALIA (IRE) Sea The Stars (Ire)–Hanakiyya (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: This Aga Khan homebred is one of five winners out of her winning dam, with the others including the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil scorer Hunaina (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and the G3 1000 Guineas Trial victrix Hamariyna (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). Her second dam, Handaza (Ire) (Be My Guest), is a half-sister to the G3 Athasi Stakes scorer Hazariya (Ire) (Xaar {GB}), herself dam of the dual Derby hero and sire Harzand (Ire). This is also the family of the three-time Group 1 winner Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), whose victories included the Irish Derby and St Leger. After getting off the mark at the second attempt in a maiden at the Curragh, Hanalia took a big step forward to follow up in last month's Listed Naas Oaks Trial. LAVA STREAM (IRE) Too Darn Hot (GB)–Stream Song (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) Pedigree/form notes: This Elwick Stud homebred is the second winner from as many runners out of her dam, a winning half-sister to five black-type performers. They include a trio of Group-race winners by Dubawi (Ire), namely the G1 British Champions Fillies And Mares Stakes heroine Journey (GB), G2 Park Hill Fillies' Stakes scorer Mimikyu (GB) and G2 May Hill Stakes victrix Indigo Girl (GB). The second dam is the G1 Prix Royal-Oak heroine Montare (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), herself a daughter of the Listed-winning Contare (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}). Rated just 74 at the start of the season, Lava Stream has since been successful in a handicap at Doncaster and a Listed race at Goodwood, before being beaten just a neck behind Port Fairy in the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot. LOPE DE LILAS (IRE) Lope De Vega (Ire)–Golden Gazelle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) Sales info: Meridian International shelled out €90,000 for this filly, who was bred by a group led by Ammerland Verwaltung GmbH and company. Incidentally, Ammerland consigned her to the Arqana August Sale. Pedigree/form notes: A maiden winner from two starts, the chestnut is the second foal and second winner out of Golden Gazelle, who landed her single victory as a 3-year-old over 2000 metres at Compiegne. Second dam and G1 Prix du Moulin heroine Grey Lilas (Ire) (Danehill) threw a trio of stakes winners, including Golden Gazelle's full-sister, French Oaks/French 1000 Guineas and Prix d'Ispahan heroine Golden Lilac (Ire). Champion NH trainer Willie Mullins has earned almost every accolade imaginable in the National Hunt sphere. If his filly is successful on Saturday, it would be his first Irish Oaks victory, but she faces a tough ask. MADAM CELESTE (IRE) Galileo (Ire)–Signora Cabello (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) Sales info: Unsold when offered by The Castlebridge Consignment as a weanling at Goffs, this bay made €750,000 on the bid of owner Newtown Anner Stud when sent through the same ring during the Orby Sale in 2022. Pedigree/form notes: A winner in three starts, this Phoenix Thoroughbred-bred filly was second in the G3 Jannah Rose Stakes in May. The first foal out of G2 Queen Mary Stakes/G2 Prix Robert Papin victress Signora Cabello, who was also second in the G1 Prix Morny, the Ger Lyons trainee is from the same family as 1994 G1 1000 Guineas heroine Las Meninas (Ire) (Glenstal). Few fillies are facing a bigger challenge than Madam Celeste, especially as she was fifth to the supplemented Hanalia–with future stakes winner Greenfinch third–in the Listed Naas Oaks Trial last out on June 26. PORT FAIRY (IRE) Australia (GB)–Fabulae (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) Pedigree/form notes: Bred by the O'Brien family's Whisperview Trading, the chestnut is the second produce of Fabulae, herself a half-sister to both G2 Champions Juvenile Stakes second Alder (Ire) (Australia {GB}), and the winning Two For Tea (Ire) (Mount Nelson {GB}), who foaled fellow Irish Oaks participant Galileo Dame. To put it bluntly, the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes heroine is one of the likeliest winners. If she, or one of her two stablesmates prevail, they would give Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O'Brien his eighth Irish Oaks. PURPLE LILY (IRE) Calyx (GB)–Boca Raton (Ire) (Approve {Ire}) Sales info: This B O'Neill-bred filly was consigned by Woodford Stud to the Goffs November Foal Sale, where she changed hands for €17,500 to Masterly Bloodstock. Lissglen Stables re-offered her as a yearling in the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, and she caught the eye of Paragon Bloodstock for €24,000 there. Re-offered through Tattersalls Ireland, this time as a Goresbridge breezer, the Chasefield Stables draftee found a new home with Avenue Bloodstock to the tune of €155,000. Pedigree/form notes: This 'TDN Rising Star' is the third foal out of her winning dam. Boca Raton's half-sister Lady's Secret (Ire) (Alzao) was third in this race in 2002. Although this will be her first trip over the 1 1/2 mile-distance, Purple Lily acquitted herself well when fifth in Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB})'s G1 Irish 1000 Guineas at the end of May. With talent to burn, the G3 Salsabil Stakes-placed filly has the potential to surprise on Saturday. RUBIES ARE RED (IRE) Galileo (Ire)–Red Evie (Ire) (Intikhab) Pedigree/form notes: G1 Matron Stakes and G1 Lockinge Stakes scorer Red Evie has been a revelation as a broodmare, with group-winning Galileo (Ire) full-sisters Magical Dream (Ire), Arc/BC Turf victress Found (Ire), Best In The World (Ire), and Irish Oaks runner-up Divinely (Ire) her best foals. She has the family for it, and the Coolmore homebred Rubies Are Red would be the 100th Grade/Group 1 winner for her illustrious late sire. A Classic would be a resounding locale to break one's maiden, however there are more likely rivals participating. WAR CHIMES (FR) Summer Front–Chipolata (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}) Sales info: Trainer David Menuisier paid just €62,000 for this filly, from Haras de Capucines, at the Arqana October Yearling Sale. Pedigree/form notes: The trio of Hubert Honore, Nicolas Clement and Christophe Clement Racing bred the Listed Prix Isonomy heroine out of the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes third Chipolata. Third in the G3 Prix Cleopatre later in the spring, she was not disgraced when third in the G1 Betfred Oaks and the distance should hold no fears. Worth a shot, especially as Menuisier has hit the crossbars of multiple Classics with his trainees already this season. YOU GOT TO ME (GB) Nathaniel (Ire)–Brushing (GB) (Medicean {GB}) Sales info: Part of The National Stud draft during the Tattersalls December Foal Sale in 2011, the daughter of Brushing made 62,000gns when selected by BBA Ireland. Re-emerging as a Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, You Got To Me cost Alex Elliott 200,000gns from consignor Glenvale Stud. Pedigree/form notes: Part of the Dullingham Park Stud and Sarabex breeding programme, this filly is the third foal produced by the Listed Galtres Stakes winner. Group 1 winners abound in this clan, among them GI Canadian International Stakes hero Relaxed Gesture (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), and Buffering (Aus) (Mossman {Aus}), a top-tier winner in both Australia and Dubai. Already a listed winner at Lingfield, You Got To Me has shown to be a hair below group company to date, after a pair of fourths in the G1 Oaks and the G2 Ribblesdale Stakes. However, she'd need just a few cards to fall differently to waltz away with some valuable Group 1 black-type. 19. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.–Trainer Jeremiah Englehart has some time to figure out what to do next with GIII Sanford Stakes winner Mo Plex (Complexity). The 2-year-old colt came out of his one-length Sanford win last Saturday in good shape, Englehart said Thursday outside his barn at the Oklahoma Annex. Now he has to decide when we'll see Mo Plex again. The options are the six-furlong, $200,000 Funny Cide for New York-breds on Aug. 25 or the seven-furlong, $300,000 GI Hopeful on Sept. 2, closing day. “I am definitely not ruling out coming back in the New York-bred race,” Englehart said. “You don't know who is going to break their maiden from now until then. The Funny Cide could be an option if I want to give him a little easier test.” Running in the Hopeful might be more appealing to owners Rick Higgins and Howard Read, who are from Albany and Saratoga Springs. Mo Plex won his debut easily–by 10 lengths–at Aqueduct on June 20. He had to work a little harder in the Sanford. “The first race didn't take a whole lot out of him,” Englehart said. “He got a little worked up [in the Sanford] in the paddock and Irad [jockey Ortiz Jr.] had to ask him from start to finish. You worry about how much the race takes out of him.” Englehart had another impressive juvenile debut when Bellacose (Audible) romped to a 10 3/4 length win vs. New York-breds on Wednesday. Last year, Englehart won four races at the 40-day meet. “Every win in Saratoga is special,” he said. “You never know when the next one is going to come. People have said to me that I must have thought [Bellacose] was going to be good. I didn't think she could really do that, but she is competitive enough where I could see her doing it. It's always good when you get your first 2-year-olds to run like that.” White Abarrio | Sarah Andrew White Abarrio Back Home, But No Races Are On Horizon White Abarrio (Race Day) has been reunited with trainer Saffie Joseph. But it doesn't appear as though there are any races on the schedule for the 2023 GI Breeders' Cup Classic. At least not in the near future. “We're thankful to have him back,” Joseph said outside his barn on the Saratoga backstretch. “Hopefully, we'll get him back to his top form.” White Abarrio is not currently in Joseph's barn, but he's not far away. The trainer said the grey or roan 5-year-old is at GMP Farm in nearby Schuylerville for some time off. “He will probably be there for two or three weeks for some down time,” Joseph said. “We just want to let him be a horse for a few weeks.” Joseph said White Abarrio will start some light training at GMP Farm before coming back to his barn in about five weeks. After that, the plan is to have White Abarrio breeze and then get him back to the races. “Our goal is to work backwards from the [GI] Pegasus [at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 25],” Joseph said. “There is no set plan yet, because you can't have a set plan until you get back on the work chart.” White Abarrio had run 11 times while under Joseph's watch until co-owner Mark Cornett moved the horse to trainer Rick Dutrow in May of 2023. That came about because Joseph was barred from racing at Churchill Downs after two of his horses died suddenly at the track within two days. The New York Racing Association also barred Joseph, who was pointing White Abarrio to the 2023 GI Metropolitan Handicap. Cornett had to make a change if White Abarrio was going to run in the Metropolitan. “With the situation I was in, what are you going to do, stop the horse's career because of me?,” Joseph said. “The owners had to make a decision to go forward and it turned out to be the right decision because he won two Grade Is.” Under Dutrow, White Abarrio was third in the Met Mile and won the GI Whitney and GI Breeders' Cup Classic last year. In two starts this year, White Abarrio was 10th in the G1 Saudi Cup and fifth in the Metropolitan Handicap. The day after the Metropolitan, Cornett moved the horse back to Joseph. “He has run two below par races,” Joseph said. “Obviously, he is much better than that.” In 11 starts for Joseph, White Abarrio had four wins, a second and a third. The biggest wins were the 2022 GIII Holy Bull and GI Florida Derby. Casa Creed | Sarah Andrew Mott, Einsidler Will Always Have Fond Memories Of Casa Creed Earlier this month, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and co-owner Lee Einsidler sent stable warrior Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) into retirement. The 8-year-old horse certainly earned it. During his 36-race career, Casa Creed had nine wins, five seconds and six thirds. Four of his eight stake races were Grade I events. His career earnings were $2,691,308. He won the GI Jaipur Stakes twice as well as the GI Fourstardave Handicap twice. His second score in the Fourstardave came last year at the hearty age of seven. “A big part of life is making great memories,” Einsidler, who owned the horse with partner Mike Francesa said recently at the Spa. “And Casa Creed is at the top of my list.” The last race was the GIII Poker Stakes at Saratoga on June 8 during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival. Casa Creed finished third and, soon after had a problem with a hind ankle. That's when the decision came to end the racing career. “He's sound, pasture sound,” Mott said. “He's not sound enough to come out here and work and run another race. He just had had enough.” Einsidler bought Casa Creed for $105,000 at the 2017 Keeneland Association September Yearling sale. He broke his maiden on dirt but spent the majority of his career on the grass. Casa Creed also won the GII National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes in 2019 when he was three and last year's GIII Kelso Stakes. Both of those races were at Saratoga. “He has given us more enjoyment than anyone should deserve,” Mott said. “He lasted a long time. Really, for most people, he's a once-in-a-lifetime horse.” The post Saratoga Notebook, Presented By NYRA Bets: Sanford Champ Mo Plex Could Run In Spa’s Hopeful Or Funny Cide appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 20. After a 20-year business relationship between Clipper Logistics' Steven Parkin and his racing advisor, Ballyhane Stud's Joe Foley, ended in March, Parkin has filed against Foley in the Irish High Court as of Wednesday, The Currency reported. A Classic-winning owner with Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) in the 2024 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, Parkin has had great success with his grey Clipper Logistics silks for many years, with the owner and Foley a formidable team. In the past, the relationship was described as “nearly like family”. The master of Ballyhane lodged his case against Parkin and Clipper Logistics in May. The first hint of troubled waters occurred this spring when Parkin-owned stallions Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) and Space Traveller (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) departed Ballyhane to instead stand the remainder of the 2024 breeding season at Starfield Stud. A third stallion, Sands Of Mali (Fr) (Panis) who is owned in partnership, has remained at Ballyhane. Foley told The Irish Field at the time, that he wished “the team at Starfield all the best with the two horses”. “It has been a great adventure helping Steve and his family build his racing and breeding operation into what it has become today and I'm proud of the top horses I have spruced for them over the years,” Foley added. Parkin purchased Dullingham Park Stud in Newmarket in 2023, and earlier acquired Branton Court Stud in Harrowgate. He sold Clipper Logistics to GXO Logistics for nearly £1 billion in May of 2022. 23. When bloodstock agent Bob Feld and his son Sean first saw Trikari (Oscar Performance) at the 2022 OBS October Sale, they pegged him as a definite six-figure yearling and, with no clients for whom to buy the handsome bay, they moved on to the next one. But when the father-son team saw the colt had RNA'd for $30,000, they purchased him privately for just $27,500. Now campaigned by the Amermans, Trikari is a Grade I winner with earnings closing in on a million dollars. “My son and I were at OBS–we go to all the sales–and we loved this Oscar Performance, but we really didn't have anyone to buy an Oscar Performance for,” Feld, a longtime advisor to John and Jerry Amerman, who bred and campaigned Oscar Performance, said. “The Amermans had never bought a yearling at OBS. And nothing really registered as far as we should buy this horse for somebody, mostly because we thought he had a $100,000 to $150,000 kind of body. I was looking at the results and I saw he RNA'd for $30,000. I thought he was way too nice for $30,000. So I went and looked at the vet report and there were some things on the vet report, but I called the Amermans–only because of the Oscar angle–and I told them he's a really nice colt with a nice page, if you can ignore that the dam hasn't done much yet.” Trikari is out of Dynamic Holiday (Harlan's Holiday), winner of the 2011 GIII Herecomesthebride Stakes and third in the GII Lake Placid Stakes. She had produced five foals before Trikari, with only two making it to the races and no winners. “She won a Grade III, she's by Harlan's Holiday, who I love,” Feld said of the mare. “The second dam is a Dynaformer, with a really great pedigree and family. So I said, 'How about we vet him out and see what the vet says. If the vet says OK, we will make an offer.'” Dr. Jared High vetted the yearling for Feld and gave an upbeat report. “He said, 'You know what, there are some dings here, but this horse just needs time,'” Feld recalled. “If you just give him some extra time and don't break him for six, seven, eight months later than you would normally break a horse, he will be fine.” The yearling, purchased by Angel Ordonez for $9,000 at the Keeneland January sale earlier in 2022, was consigned to the October sale by Ordonez Thoroughbreds. “Once Dr. High said it was a go, I went back to the barn and I offered the guy $25,000,” Feld recalled. “And he was wincing and saying, 'Oh, I really want $30,000.' So I said, 'How about we split the difference. I will give you $27,500.' And he agreed, so we went to the office and signed the paperwork.” “$27,500 is obviously an odd price,” Feld admitted with a chuckle. “I told someone the other day, I would bet there has never been a Grade I winner bought at auction for $27,500.” Of the issues on the vet report that might have put off some potential buyers, Feld said, “It was sesamoiditis, just stuff that needed time. There was nothing glaring. But a lot of times, especially at the OBS yearling sale, everyone leans on the vet report. They don't hire vets because that gets too expensive. There was just enough on there where I think it discouraged a lot of people. Everyone was kind of looking the other way. But I thought he was the best physical in the sale. I just didn't think I had a client who had $100,000 or $150,000 to buy him.” Trikari was sent to Barry Berkelhammer's Abracadabra Farm for his early training and, once given the extra time he needed, was sent to trainer Graham Motion. “He's been pretty much straightforward,” Feld said of the colt's progress. “I think he had a little niggling thing that Graham mentioned to me, but Graham liked him right away. Graham obviously trained [MGISW] Miss Temple City for us and he was very happy with her and excited about her. But he really gushes about Trikari, so that got me excited early on when he said this horse can really run. He went slow with him, too. He knew, full disclosure, that he needed time. So he gave him even extra time when he got to the track.” Trikari's first start–a last-of-12 finish at Keeneland in October of his juvenile season–may not have inspired much confidence, but the colt returned to graduate over the Tapeta at Gulfstream in December. He added the Rushaway Stakes over the synthetic surface at Turfway in March before upsetting the GII American Turf Stakes as a 47-1 outsider over the Churchill lawn on the Derby undercard. Third best in a blanket finish in the May 31 GIII Penn Mile, Trikari was sent off at 5-1 while trying top-level company for the first time in the Belmont Derby. Close-up to a sluggish pace, Trikari outbattled resurgent pacesetter White Palomino (Kitten's Joy) in the final strides for a dramatic victory July 6. “Oh yes, I did,” Feld said when asked if he thought Trikari had gotten the bob. “Actually, I don't want to brag, but I am pretty good with photo finishes. I have been watching the races since I was eight years old, so it's over 50 years of photo finishes.” He continued, “The Amermans flew out from California to the race. I really wanted to go, but we had to look at the July sale horses. Sean and I went to McCarthy's to watch it on TV and we were screaming. People were giving us dirty looks, but we were screaming.” The Felds have built a steady reputation for finding future graded-stakes runners at bargain prices. They purchased multiple graded-placed Sueno (Atreides) for $61,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September sale and Hot Rod Charlie (Indian Charlie) for $17,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton February sale before reselling the future Grade I winner and GI Kentucky Derby runner-up for $110,000 at Fasig-Tipton that October. “Maybe I am Pollyanna, but every time my son and I buy a horse, we think it's potentially a Grade I winner,” Feld said. “We really do. We have been very fortunate buying Grade I winners at low prices and it's been fun to kind of get a reputation that we can buy a nice horse for not a whole lot of money. So honestly, no matter what I pay, I believe could be a Grade I winner. That's just my attitude.” Finding those bargains is a labor of love for Feld. “What I love the most about the auction is the process,” he said. “The process is so amazing. There is so much going on. Everyone has their team and their notes. It's like sifting for gold. My son and I work every sale by ourselves–including the September sale–we look at every horse at every sale. We split the horses up. We swap short lists and then we get that down to a short, short list. Then we go together and look at the horses. When you get to the point where you buy a Trikari, the feeling is so amazing and so satisfying.” Feld continued, “And I am proud of our numbers. We don't buy 20 or 30 horses a year. We buy 10 or 12. Our only pinhook, the one year that Sean and I bought our own horse to pinhook, was Hot Rod Charlie. The only horse the Amermans have ever bought at OBS as a yearling is Trikari. I remember one year, the only filly I bought at OBS–and we only bought two that year the whole season at OBS–was a champion 2-year-old filly [in Florida], K P Dreamin. The percentages are what we are really proud of. But it's all part of the process. And through the process, you find a vet report that you can deal with, you find a so-called bad sire that no one wants that has a rock star body. If Trikari was by Gun Runner or Uncle Mo, he would have brought $250,000. A lot of the horses we buy, if they were by different sires, they would be a lot more money. So we are definitely buying physicals and the physical does seem to outrun the pedigree a lot.” As the Felds continue their quest for their next Grade I winner, Trikari's summer agenda is still to be determined. “There are a couple of different options that Graham is looking at,” Feld said of a potential next start for the newly minted Grade I winner. “But nothing is etched in stone. He is going to see how he trains. Graham didn't think he was going to the Penn Mile, but he was training so good, he went there. So it's going to just depend on how he is training. But there are so many options for 3-year-old colts in the summertime on the grass. And there is plenty of money out there.” The post Grade I Winner Trikari Outrunning His Sales Price appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
