Letter to the Editor: The Good People in the Game

At a time when there’s so much negative news in the Thoroughbred industry (and sadly, the entire world it seems) some of the good people in the game merit a few words.

On August 29th, veteran rider Jose Ferrer celebrated his 4500th career victory on our filly Tracy Ann’s Legacy (Shackleford) at Monmouth Park. The video from that win is priceless; you can hear Jose’s wife, Steffi and their two kids screaming and cheering as she comes down the stretch seven lengths in front. Seeing Jose’s face as he brings her into the winner’s circle expresses all the good things about our sport.

On August 14th, trainer Kelly Breen celebrated his 800th career victory with our filly Life On the Edge (Competitive Edge), a thrilling nostril win under a picture-perfect ride by another terrific veteran rider, Paco Lopez.

Our stable, Kenwood Racing, has enjoyed four wins and five seconds in nine starts for the 2020 meet at Monmouth, thanks to the hard work and dedication of these terrific people and everyone who works with them. As much as we rightfully decry the cheaters and bad apples in our business, we should not forget that the majority of people are in the game for the love of the horse. There are a lot of riders, trainers and other professionals in our industry like Jose and Kelly and Paco at tracks large and small who don’t always receive the recognition their good work deserves.
