AUTHENTIC (c, 3, Into Mischief–Flawless, by Mr. Greeley), sent away as the 8-1 third choice in a scratched-down field of 15 in Saturday’s GI Kentucky Derby, hit the ground running from the widest gate, cleared his rivals turning up the backstretch and despite race-long pressure to his outside and a prevailing wisdom that he didn’t really want the Derby trip, repelled the bid of 3-5 Tiz the Law (Constitution) and went on to take the ‘Run to the Roses’ by a little more than a length. Mr. Big News (Giant’s Causeway) took off three furlongs from home and kept on for third ahead of second favorite Honor A.P. (Honor Code), who was bothered after the break by Ny Traffic (Cross Traffic) just to his inside, raced far back for the opening six furlongs and did exceptionally well to even be fourth. The Derby field was reduced to 15 when Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile) flipped in the paddock, necessitating a scratch. Winning trainer Bob Baffert told NBC’s Kenny Rice that assistant Jimmy Barnes had suffered a broken arm in the incident. Authentic defeated Honor A.P. in the GII San Felipe S. in March, but saw the latter turn the tables in the GI Santa Anita Derby in June when racing resumed in California. The $350,000 Keeneland September yearling looked on his way to a decisive score last time out in the GI TVG.com Haskell S., but became unfocused in the final furlong, nearly allowing Ny Traffic to get up. Authentic is the sixth Kentucky Derby winner for Baffert, tying the legendary Ben Jones. O-Spendthrift Farm LLC, Myracehorse.com, Madaket Stables LLC & Starlight Racing; B-Peter E Blum Thoroughbreds (KY); T-Bob Baffert.
