‘TDN Rising Star’ MALATHAAT (f, 2, Curlin-Dreaming of Julia, by A.P. Indy) never looked to be getting a hold of a rain-affected main track in Saturday’s GII Demoiselle S. at Aqueduct, but she rallied once into the clear into the stretch and was along late for an improbable victory. Favored at 45 cents on the dollar to take her record to a perfect three-for-three, Malathaat was locked away in third on the heels of pacesetting Traffic Lane (Outwork), with Millefeuille (Curlin) to her outside and Malibu Curl (Curlin) deeper out. John Velazquez was after Malathaat better than five furlongs from home, resorting to the whip as it appeared the filly was not relishing the underfoot conditions and things appeared no better as Millefeuille went farther in front entering the final three furlongs. It still looked like mission impossible with five lengths to find and under a left-handed stick at the quarter pole, but she finally found her best stride when produced three wide into the lane and reeled in Millefeuille for the win. Malibu Curl completed a 1-2-3 for Curlin, who was siring his 35th winner at the graded level. Sales history: $1,050,000 Ylg ’19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 3-3-0-0. O-Shadwell Stable; B-Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings (KY); T-Todd Pletcher.
