Second at 31-1 in 2018 and third at odds of 32-1 last year, Calumet Farm’s TRUE TIMBER (h, 6, Mineshaft-Queen’s Wood, by Tiznow) sat an ideal stalking trip off a strong tempo and pounced on dueling pacesetters to take Saturday’ GI Cigar Mile H. at a mere 7-1. New York-bred Mr Buff (Friend or Foe) and the comebacking King Guillermo (Uncle Mo) showed the most early speed, as expected, and Kendrick Carmouche got True Timber into the perfect spot outside of those runners and a length or two in arrears. Perfectly positioned to strike if and when the taxing pace exacted its toll, True Timber surged to the lead approaching the stretch, found another gear at the eighth pole and romped in by the better part of a half-dozen length. Snapper Sinclair (City Zip) raced in the second flight of horses and outlasted favored Performer (Speightstown) for second. The Phipps runner was perhaps a half-step slow into stride and raced at the fence or the two path for the opening half-mile. He kicked it in once angled out sharply at the three-furlong pole and rallied widest into the stretch, but to no avail. It was a first Grade I winner for Carmouche. Lifetime Record: 29-5-5-9. O-Calumet Farm; B-Mr & Mrs Marc C Farrell (KY); T-Jack Sisterson.

“Was this a grade one?!” @KendrickCarmou1 exclaims as he makes his way back to the winner’s circle with TRUE TIMBER in the Cigar Mile! This is Kendrick’s first G1 victory!!!!!
