CURLY JACK (Good Magic–Connie and Michael, by Roman Ruler) became the second graded winner for his freshman sire (by Curlin) with an upset score in the GIII Iroquois S. The 10-1 shot laid back in sixth as favored 'TDN Rising Stars' Damon's Mound (Girvin) and Echo Again (Gun Runner) knocked heads through opening splits of :23.53 and :47.48. Four wide turning for home, the $180,000 KEESEP buy hit the front in early stretch and held off a late bid from Jace's Road (Quality Road) and late-running Honed (Sharp Azteca) to score in 1:45.62. Honed got up for second. A debut winner at this venue in June, Curly Jack was fifth in Saratoga's GIII Sanford S. July 16 and missed by a head in the Ellis Park Juvenile S. Aug. 14. Lifetime Record: 4-2-1-0.
