Hong Kong racing heads back to Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon with a slight change from the regular 10-race program. It’s a new start time of 4pm HKT due to humid conditions expected over the next two months. We’ve got two Group 3 features headlining the card, with the Lion Rock Trophy (1600m) and Sha Tin Vase (1200m) seeing some quality gallopers step out looking to find some black type before the end of the season. The rail is in the B position the entire circuit, and with the late start we should have perfect conditions for racing.

Lion Rock Trophy: Beauty Eternal

Beauty Eternal has been on the rise since debuting in October of last year and can now earn his first Group quality success on Sunday evening. The son of Starspangledbanner has been ultra-consistent for the John Size yard, and although he was beaten last time out, we’re confident he can bounce back over the 1600m. He ran second behind Red Lion on unsuitable Heavy conditions on May 13, slogging his way to the line to finish less than two lengths away. The winner has subsequently scored back-to-back wins, and with the form stacking up nicely, Beauty Eternal looks primed to find his sixth win of the season. It’s only a small field to contend with, and with Zac Purton likely to find the leaders back throughout the journey, it’s hard to be against him in the Group 3 feature.

Sha Tin Vase: Lucky Sweynesse

Lucky Sweynesse has stamped his authority as Hong Kong’s best sprinter and that’s bound to continue Sunday. He’s now a three-time Group 1 winner this preparation and after his domination of his rivals in the Group 1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize on April 30, it’s simply too hard to be taking on this impressive gelding. He’s taken on very similar opposition throughout the campaign, and although he must carry the hefty 61kg on his back, he looks poised to take care of them again. Zac Purton will continue his association with Lucky Sweynesse and will evaluate things from the jump. Whether he wants to dictate terms or hand up the lead, Lucky Sweynesse should prove too strong again.

Best Bet: Baby Crystal

Baby Crystal was feeling the pinch after returning from a spell first-up at Sha Tin on May 7 and should make massive improvement heading into the weekend. He led them up over the 1200m on that occasion and fitness took its toll late in the piece as Super Highway got the better of him by a length. It was still a very solid return for this son of Per Incanto and we’re happy to stick with him moving into his second up assignment. He stays at the same course and distance, with a speed map likely to see him lead again, Zac Purton will look to ping the lids from barrier three before kicking clear of his rivals turning for home. Baby Crystal looks ready for an upgrade into Class 3 and to do that, he’ll need to be finding his second career win here.

Next Best: A Pal

A Pal is set to make his much-anticipated return from a 22-week spell, and we think he can salute in the final race on the program. He suffered a bleeding attack and was forced to the paddock after a tilt at Class 2 company and can clearly be forgiven for his mid-field finish. We’re taking him based off his most recent effort in Class 3 at this course and distance, running into Super Sunny Sing on January 1. The form from that race has produced many subsequent winners and we’re confident A Pal will fit into that category based on his barrier trials heading into this first-up assignment. Derek Leung takes the reins and draws to get the perfect run in transit. If A Pal returns to racing close to his best, he’s the one to beat here and at a good price with online bookmakers to boot.
