What Northam Stakes Day Where Northam Race Club – 175 Yilgarn Ave, Northam WA 6401 When Sunday, May 5, 2024 First Race 1:37pm AWST Visit Dabble The Northam Race Club will host its marquee meeting this Sunday afternoon, with a very competitive seven-race program set down for decision. With perfect autumn weather forecast across the weekend, it is expected that the track will improve into the Good range after being rated as a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances. The rail will be in the +5m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race on Northam Stakes Day set to jump at 1:37pm AWST. Northam Stakes Tip: Western Empire After a torrid 18 months in Victoria, Western Empire returned home to Western Australia and was impressive first-up in The Joey (1200m) at Ascot. The six-year-old gelding was slightly held up behind the speed; however, once he got into clear galloping room, the son of Iffraaj flashed home to finish third. William Pike has a very good record on this galloper (9:5-1-2), while the slight rise in trip second-up should make Western Empire extremely hard to beat in the Group 3 Northam Stakes (1300m). Northam Stakes Race 6 – #11 Western Empire (4) 6yo Gelding | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: William Pike (55kg) +230 with Bet365 Best Bet at Northam: She’s Imminent She’s Imminent has improved in between her first and second starts this time in and should be peaking third-up as she steps up to 1300m. This daughter of Impending is one from one at the track and trip, while Chris Parnham sticks after riding the mare in both starts this preparation. With good speed expected up front, Parnham will settle She’s Imminent towards the rear of the field and look to finish off strongly down the outside. Best Bet Race 7 – #6 She’s Imminent (6) 4yo Mare | T: Daniel Morton | J: Chris Parnham (55.5kg) +320 with Neds Next Best at Northam: Rubick Lass Rubick Lass broke her maiden when grinding home in a driving finish at Pinjarra over 1413m on April 21. The David Harrison-trained filly appeared to get stronger the further she ran, so getting out to 1600m for the first time should be no issue. From barrier six, Joseph Azzopardi will settle in the one-one position behind the speed and attempt to replicate the last-start victory. Te Akau Racing co-trainer Mark Walker. Photo: Trish Dunell Te Akau Racing will be vying to score juvenile stakes titles on opposite ends of the country on Saturday. New Zealand’s leading stable will have a two-pronged attack in the Listed Berkley Stud Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Riccarton courtesy of Discretion Rules and debutant Colonel Warden, while Fortuna Syndicate’s Star Shadow will be their sole representative in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre 2YO Stakes (1400m) at Te Rapa. Discretion Rules has been very consistent, placing in all three of his starts to date, including runner-up behind stablemate Nucleozor in the Listed Welcome Stakes (1000m) at Riccarton last month. Nucleozor has been the victor in all three of their meetings, but will be missing from Saturday’s contest, and trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson are hoping Discretion Rules can capitalise on that. “He’s been in good form the whole way through. He is well and he is definitely in the mix,” Walker said. Walker is also pleased with Colonel Warden, with the son of Russian Revolution having won his 950m trial at Tauranga in March before trekking south to Te Akau’s Riccarton barn to prepare for his debut outing this weekend. “He has trialled up okay up north. He’s better than a runner’s chance,” he said. Discretion Rules is a $3.60 favourite for the race with bookmakers, while Colonel Warden is on the fourth line of betting at $5.50. In the North Island, the stable is hoping fellow juvenile Star Shadow can continue their winning form in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre 2YO Stakes at Te Rapa. The daughter of Reliable Man won on debut at Otaki last month, and while pleased with their filly, Walker and Bergerson are aware of the quality of horse she will meet this weekend. “It was a good win on debut, but this is a bit of a step-up, it’s quite a good field,” Walker said. The unbeaten Domain Ace heads the market for the juvenile feature at a winning quote of $3.10, with the Stephen Marsh-trained debut winner Super Photon the second fancied runner at $3.60. Meanwhile, Walker is hopeful of picking up another couple of wins this weekend to add to Te Akau Racing’s current domestic season haul of 144 victories. Francee has caught Walker’s eye in the Metalco 1400 at Te Rapa, while he said Can’t Kach Me and Our Milly Bee look strong prospects in the Rohan Mudhoo Trust Fundraiser Rating 65 (2000m). “Francee has been in reasonable form. She is definitely in the mix, but it is quite an even field,” Walker said. “Can’t Kach Me and Our Milly Bee are both chances in that race at Riccarton, while Sorcha has been in good form.” Horse racing news View the full article

The Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival continues its Group 1 racing bonanza this Saturday at Morphettville with the running of the $1 million South Australian Derby (2500m). Coco Sun is tipped to beat home the boys in the 2024 SA Derby field in Adelaide this weekend. Photo: Jenny Barnes. A capacity field of talented three-year-old stayers is set to vie for glory, with all eyes on the Victorian filly Coco Sun who is heavily favoured to become the first filly to win the race since Qafila in 2019. Trained by the successful team of Tony & Calvin McEvoy, Coco Sun boasts an impressive record of four wins from her ten career starts. Currently drawn barrier 10, she could potentially slide into a more favourable position (barrier 8) if all emergencies are scratched. Jockey Jamie Kah retains the ride after a narrow third-place finish in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at the same track. The extra 500 meters shouldn’t be an issue for Coco Sun, considering her competitive performance against fillies in the VRC Oaks (2500m) during the spring. Early punters are clearly enamoured with Coco Sun’s chances, driving her odds down to $4.40 according to Ladbrokes. While Coco Sun is the clear top elect in South Australian Derby betting, there are several other runners with the potential to cause an upset. Both Warmonger ($6.50) and Antrim Coast ($6.50) share the second line of the markets. Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr.’s Warmonger, a son of War Decree, has been steadily improving with consistent placings in recent runs at Morphettville. Drawing barrier 14 presents a slight challenge, but jockey Damian Lane is known for his tactical brilliance. Antrim Coast, trained across the Tasman by Stephen Marsh and to be ridden by Michael Dee, offers a strong international presence. This New Zealand-bred gelding finished a close second in the prestigious Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) and has displayed his competitiveness against top company in Australia including winning the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes two back at The Valley. Other runners to watch include the Chairman’s Stakes winner Bold Soul ($8) and the consistent Chris Waller-trained filly Ahuriri ($8) who is coming off a dominant victory in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m). What Sale Races Where Sale Turf Club – 1227 Maffra-Sale Rd, Sale VIC 3850 When Sunday, May 5, 2024 First Race 1pm AEST Visit Dabble Victorian horse racing is back at the Sale Turf Club this Sunday afternoon for an eight-race lineup. The forecast promises a flawless autumn day, and with a Soft 5 track and the rail out 3m, optimal racing conditions are all but guaranteed. The action at Sale kicks off at 1pm AEST. Best Bet at Sale: King’s Capital Former Hong Kong galloper King’s Capital has found a new lease on life since arriving in Victoria, with a win and a second to his name from three starts. The seven-year-old gelding proved too classy at Geelong and Ballarat when racing on speed an offering a nice kick when asked for the ultimate effort. Daniel Stackhouse sticks on board, and with a bit of speed drawn underneath, the pair should land in the one-one and stalk the lead before disposing of his rivals in this 1728m BM64. Best Bet Race 6 – #3 King’s Capital (10) 7yo Gelding | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Daniel Stackhouse (61.5kg) +140 with Picklebet Next Best at Sale: A Book Of Days A Book Of Days has been racing well without winning in his four career starts. Last time out at Bendigo, the son of Written By was slightly held up when building momentum and went down by a half-length. Luke Nolen will likely settle in the one-one, and outside of any bad luck, this bloke should relish the step up to 1400m and prove too hard to hold out this time. Next Best Race 4 – #1 A Book Of Days (11) 3yo Gelding | T: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | J: Luke Nolen (59.5kg) +160 with Neds Best Value at Sale: Disco Prince Despite putting in a stinker at Pakenham as an odds-on favourite last time out, Disco Prince can find winning form in the Sale opener. The three-year-old gelding caught the eye on debut at Ballarat on March 24 when making up a stack of ground from beyond midfield, but being ridden more positively seemed to bring him undone at Pakenham. Jamie Mott will likely have the son of Justify settled towards the rear, and if he can replicate the finish he produced on debut, Disco Prince looks the goods. Multiple bottles of animal venom–most likely from snakes, spiders, and scorpions–have been intercepted by United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in Cincinnati since the beginning of the year, according to a report by WKRC in Cincinnati. Agents told WKRC some of the supply, which originated in Mexico, was headed to racetracks. Cincinnati is approximately 80 miles north of Lexington and 100 miles northeast of Louisville, while Turfway Park is about 10 miles outside of Cincinnati over the Kentucky border. WKRC specifically noted the “timing is no coincidence with the Kentucky Derby coming up on Saturday,” although there is no evidence to support that speculation. “Kentucky is known as the horse capital of the world,” said Cincinnati Port Director Alrick Brooks to WKRC. “And the equine industry is a prominent part of the U.S. agricultural economy. CBP is committed to protecting this industry and the animals within it by preventing illicit substances such as these–designed to mask pain or artificially enhance an animal's legitimate physical capabilities–from coming into the country.” In the last four months, CBP agents with the assistance of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have found eight separate packages with bottles given labels like “tiger blood” or with pictures of scorpions and spiders. Among the contents of the bottles were injectable cobra venom, spidermorph, scorpioadrenalin, TB-1000, caffeine, anabolic steroids, Ritalin, ketamine, and unknown vitamin compounds. The seized shipments were done at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The contents violated several FDA regulations, including the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Performance enhancers in racing have been at the forefront of several federal investigations in recent years, leading to prison for prominent trainers Jason Servis and Jorge Navarro, as well as several other indictments. By Mike Love While Auckland will host three Group 1s tonight, Addington also has a high quality race night that includes three Uncut Gems races, and a Sires’ Stakes heat. Race 6, the Garrards Sires’ Stakes Series (Heat 4) features a small but high class field, headlined by the two Mark and Nathan Purdon-trained runners, Chase A Dream ($2.60FF) and We Walk By Faith ($3.60FF). According to the Purdon Racing website We Walk By Faith’s “work has been good” and from a “handy barrier draw is a top 3 chance” while Chase A Dream “trialled good last week, is in a good place, and a top 2 chance.” Northern Derby winner Cold Chisel has also ventured south while Nathan Williamson’s brought Dreams Are Free north from his Branxholme base. A winner of four from nine, the Captaintreacherous colt was fourth in his last start in the Alabar Southern Supremacy Stakes Final at Invercargill last month. “He finished off well in the Supremacy and did as well as he could have done with the run he had,” says Williamson, “the plan will be to have him at his best next week (for the final) so he will benefit a lot from tonight’s run.” Williamson also trains and drives Miraculous in race four, the Matt Harrison Construction Mobile Pace (6.34pm). He’s a $2.30 favourite and meets a field that includes Carrera Rapido ($4.20FF), Watermelon Sugar ($6.50FF) and Time And Tide ($5.50). “He’s a nice horse. Whatever he does this trip away and over his next couple of starts will stand him in good stead for the future. He’s got plenty of ability. He’s raced with merit against some of the nicest in the land.” The Uncut Gems races start at Race 5 (6.59pm)with the NZB Standardbred Uncut Gems Trotters Classic with impressive last start winner Bet N Win a $1.80 favourite, ahead of Mighty Logan ($5.50) and Eurostyle ($6.50). Drawn well at two, Wish My Luck will be gunning for his fourth win in just five starts when lines up in the Betavet Uncut Gems Geldings and Entires Classic (7.50pm). He’s a $9 fourth favourite behind Who’s Delight ($2.80FF), Wag Star ($4FF) and Charlie Brown ($6FF). Diamond Racing labels Who’s Delight as their top-rater, saying he’s been “working well and will be tough to hold out if he brings his manners” while Charlie Brown had a good “southern campaign and the draw could work out well.” Telfer-trained stablemates Kahlua Flybye ($2.35FF) and Sweet Diamond ($2.90FF) dominate the market for the Rico Lodge Uncut Gems Mares Classic (8.40pm) after impressive last start wins, with southerner Advance Party third favourite at $5.50 for Williamson. “She will need things in her favour,” says Williamson, “she’s a good place chance in a good field. We will have to weigh it up and see what happens.” View the full article

Riccarton trainer Michael Pitman has a soft spot for five-win gelding Star Ballot and believes he is capable of contesting the Gr.3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) on his home track in November. The five-year-old son of Tarzino was a last start victor over 2600m at the Christchurch track and will be looking to end his preparation on a high when he returns to the venue on Saturday to tackle the Hornby Club Founders Cup (2600m). “I said to his owners way back in February that this would be an ideal race for him,” said Pitman, who trains in partnership with his son Matthew. “The only thing is I can’t believe that rating 73 is the highest rated horse in the race, which means he has to carry 60kg. I thought he would get in at a good weight, but he is the highest rated horse in the race, that is why he has to carry it.” The five-year-old gelding has won two races this preparation and Pitman said he will likely head for a spell after his weekend assignment in preparation for what could be an exciting spring campaign. “He will probably go out for a spell,” he said. “If he wins this race, the obvious race for him is the New Zealand Cup. He is a lovely horse, he is probably my favourite horse, he has got real stamina.” The Riccarton track was rated a Soft5 on Friday morning and Pitman said that will favour Star Ballot over his stablemate Tomyturbo, who he will meet once again in the 2600m contest. Star Ballot got the better of Tomyturbo at Riccarton last start, with the latter having won his two prior starts, and Pitman is expecting a similar result this weekend. “Tomyturbo meets the other horse two-killos better off,” he said. “I think the improving track conditions will help Star Ballot more than Tomyturbo. Star Ballot prefers a Good track and won in spite of the track last start, not because of it. and Tomyturbo put in a huge run, but he is probably better off on a damper track.” While Pitman believes Star Ballot is the better winning chance on Saturday, TAB bookmakers can’t split the pair, with the duo joint $2.80 favourites. Later on the card, Charbano will attempt to add another Cup to the trainers’ haul when he competes in the Avon City Ford Easter Cup (1600m). The son of Vespa was victorious two starts back before running sixth behind Matscot in the $350,000 Southern Alps Challenge (1600m), and Pitman is hopeful for an improved result on Saturday. “He went well the other day. He made a big run out wide,” he said. “It is a strong field and Harlech will be hard to beat, but he deserves a crack at it, he has got a good at Riccarton and the distance. He is a lightweight chance.” Pitman is looking to end the meeting on a high when promising three-year-old Ocean Light contests the Rohan Mudhoo Trust Fundraiser Rating 65 (2000m), for which he is a $4.80 favourite with TAB bookmakers “He went massive in his last start,” Pitman said. “He is only a three-year-old and you have always got that in the back of your mind, but he is a lovely staying horse and he is a typical Ocean Park, he will only improve with time. I have put Lisa Allpress on tomorrow and if he gets the right run, he should be really hard to beat.” View the full article

Paul Denton and Kerry Petrick, currently the leading jockey and trainer in the Alice Springs and Provincial premiership, celebrate after combining to win the 2022 NT Derby (2050m) with Venting at Darwin’s Fannie Bay. They’ve won 123 races together, but trainer Kerry Petrick and jockey Paul Denton have never claimed the Alice Springs and Provincial premiership in the same season. When five-year-old mare Princess Pancakes, with Denton aboard, saluted at Pioneer Park on April 20, Petrick hit the front in the trainers’ premiership with 18.5 wins to surpass Paul Gardner (18). Petrick, born and raised in Alice Springs, kicked off her training career in 1996, but she has never won the Red Centre premiership. Denton, an NT racing ornament since 1983, has celebrated success in the Top End and Country Premiership when based in Darwin and has won the Alice Springs title twice. He leads the 2023/24 premiership with 19 wins over Jessie Philpot (15) and currently sits on 498 wins at Pioneer Park. For Petrick and Denton to seal the Alice Springs titles would be fitting, as they have won a plethora of NT features, including the Alice Springs Cup with Mister Cheval (1999) and He’s Here (2009). When Petrick won her first race with Better Western in Darwin in February 1997, Denton was the jockey. The pair are good friends and are part of a group that spent this week at the Warrnambool Carnival. They return to Alice Springs on Sunday, where Princess Pancakes, as well as four-year-old geldings Flash Fiorente and Soonali, will step out at Pioneer Park. “I think the best of mine is Princess Pancakes coming off her last win, she’s come ahead really well,” Petrick said. Denton agreed, especially as the mare finished second on three straight occasions before her last start win over 1400m. “You’d have to give Princess Pancakes a chance – she probably should have won on Cup Day – she’s drawn well to sit on the pace and run out a strong mile,” he said. “Kerry and I had a break from early September until mid-November after Kununurra, we’ve had a good run these past few months.” With the Alice Springs Cup Day normally taking place in early May before the Carnival was brought forward this year, Petrick and Denton never had the opportunity to attend the Warrnambool Carnival. “Previously, Warrnambool started after Alice Springs Cup Day when it was on a Monday,” Petrick said. “We decided to make the most of it this year and so far it’s been absolutely wonderful. “We’ve run into a lot of people we know in the racing industry.” Denton said: “We actually spent a couple of days at Grampians, just outside Stawell, where we have owners are based.” During the revamped Alice Springs Carnival, Petrick won the Cup with Venting, and Denton won the Pioneer Sprint on Mathematics for SA trainer Kym Healy. Petrick and Denton ended the Carnival with five wins. “I don’t think it worked bringing the Carnival forward a month, they didn’t get the crowds or the big fields,” he said. “I don’t like the idea of having the Sprint on Saturday and the Cup on Sunday. “If you’ve got that spare day, there’s every chance horses can back up.” Horse racing news View the full article

Alice Springs trainer Rene Taylor (right) with her late grandmother Emmie Wehr, who was also a prominent trainer in the Red Centre, during a meeting at Pioneer Park. Alice Springs trainer Rene Taylor is well and truly on the road to recovery. Taylor, 45, is convalescing after a serious training accident on November 20 last year where she fell from a horse and injured her spine. The mother of two teenage boys had worked unraced three-year-old gelding Midnight Hustle along the banks of the Todd River behind the Pioneer Park racecourse and was returning to the stables when she was dislodged. “It was just an alternative exercise rather than going on the track, but he suddenly shied and I came out of the saddle,” she said. “It wasn’t anything dramatic or spectacular, I just landed on my bum, but my spine just compacted. “I knew there was something wrong straight away, I couldn’t get up. “The pain was through the roof, it was excruciating and I was screaming.” When the riderless Midnight Hustle was discovered wondering around the stables at the rear of the racecourse fellow trainers, jockeys and stable-hands went looking for Taylor. She was discovered some 10-15 minutes later before an ambulance was summoned. “Josh Gardner, the son of trainer Paul, found me in his vehicle on the dirt track behind the stables, it runs adjacent to the river,” Taylor said. Following a CT scan and MRI at Alice Springs Hospital, a heavily sedated Taylor was on a flight to Adelaide that afternoon with husband David Sanders by her side. “It was about 4.30pm when I left Alice Springs and I was wheeled into theatre at Royal Adelaide Hospital at around 1.30am on the Tuesday,” she said. “Two screws in my L11, L12, C2 and C3, as well as two rods attached to every screw. “I had a compression fracture to my C1 – it was crushed to 50 per cent of its normal size. “They had me standing within hours after my surgery and I started walking on the Friday. “The screws will come out after 12 months.” After intensive rehab walking is thankfully not a serious ordeal these days, but Rene still has discomfort when she either leans over, attempts to pick something up from the floor or puts on her shoes. There was a period where she sat on a chair to shower. Further x-rays in January indicated that the recovery process was going well, but it will be a while before she can return to the saddle. Instead, Taylor will focus on training where she has Eight On The Dot, Tycoons Dior, Midnight Hustle and the unraced three-year-old filly Piccadilly Hero in her yard. “I’d like to get back on a horse today, but that’s unlikely until next year,” Taylor said. “Midnight Hustle and Piccadilly Hero are in work.” Taylor, who started her training career in June 2020, is off to Pioneer Park on Sunday as one of the races on the Alice Springs Turf Club’s program honours her late grandmother Emmie Wehr. Wehr, Australia’s first Indigenous female horse trainer, was an institution in the Red Centre for well over 50 years before passing away in 2021, aged 83. “I’ve been to a few meetings, which was something I was looking forward to, since my operation,” Taylor said. “The support and love I received from the Alice Springs community was overwhelming, it was incredible. “One minute racing is your whole world, then the next minute it’s not your whole world. “Getting better is your whole world.” Horse racing news View the full article

'TDN Rising Star' Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), winner of last summer's GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame S. Aug. 11 and GIII Saranac S. Sept. 1, picked up right where he left off despite a wide trip in Thursday's Opening Verse S. at Churchill Downs. The 9-5 favorite was a three-wide fifth around the first turn and set his sights on the top two entering the far turn. He made his move while three deep at the top of the stretch and fought his way past a game pacesetter in Talk of the Nation (Quality Road) to make it three straight. A disappointing eighth as the favorite in the GII American Turf S. on last year's GI Kentucky Derby undercard, Carl Spackler was unraced since putting them back to back at the Spa last summer. The winner's dam has a 2-year-old full sister to the winner and produced a colt by Uncle Mo this year. “I am real proud of this horse today,” winning trainer Chad Brown said. “His dam (Zindaya) is one of the first horses I trained and won with (for e Five Racing). He came off the layoff and ran great. That was a real good horse inside him (Talk of the Nation) and we had to fight all the way. We are probably going to take him up to Saratoga and see what we can do from there.” OPENING VERSE S., $304,100, Churchill Downs, 5-2, 4yo/up, 1mT, 1:35.31, fm. 1–CARL SPACKLER (IRE), 120, c, 4, Lope de Vega (Ire)–Zindaya (GSW, $567,240), by More Than Ready. When Hall of Famer Wayne Lukas sends out Just Steel (Justify) in this year's GI Kentucky Derby it will be his first starter in the race since 2018. Lukas, 88, is a perpetual optimist, but even he had to be worrying that he had had his last Derby starter. It wasn't Lukas. Even at his age he never slowed down. It was the sport's top owners. Many wouldn't send a horse to an octogenarian, knocking on the door of 90, even one considered to be one of the greatest trainers ever. What he needed was someone who so valued his experience and ability that they didn't worry about the age factor. And he found them. Lukas's most important owners are now Brian Coelho and John Bellinger, who run under the name of BC Stables LLC. Thanks to Lukas, they are about to achieve an important goal, to get a horse into the Kentucky Derby. Just Steel was purchased by Lukas and the BC team for $500,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September sale. He is 20-1 in the morning line, but is coming off the best race of his career, a second-place finish in the GI Arkansas Derby. He has a chance. “I've known Wayne for 10 years and I liked him from day one,” Bellinger said. “He and I hit it off well. With business dealings and partnerships it's all about getting along with people more than anything. Wayne and I saw eye to eye. I didn't care about his age. What I loved was his experience. We moved quickly. We needed to buy some horses and I knew Wayne. I never doubted the decision to go to Wayne. There are other great trainers and they don't know me from Adam. I knew Wayne and he knew me. It was an easy move for me to make.” Bellinger is based in Texas and he and his wife own several companies, the biggest of which is a laboratory business that tests food products. Coelho is from California and owns the largest cattle feeding operation in the state, as well as meat processing plants. The two had talked about going into racing for years, and finally decided to do so just prior to the 2021 Keeneland September sale. “About four years ago, we were in a good position financially and we thought it was a good time in our lives to dabble a little bit,” Coelho said. “We got on the phone with Wayne one September and talked over a plan with the idea that we'd make a run and try to get into the Derby and try to get Wayne back to the Derby one more time. That day we bought four yearlings at Keeneland and here we are. “I think that being in the sport ourselves we were looking for somebody with the experience who could not only train good horses but teach us as well,” Coelho continued. “We felt there was still opportunity with him. With the amount of time we have spent with Wayne and from his knowledge, what we have learned these last four years is invaluable. We had faith he could get us here and he has proven he can do that.” Bellinger and Coelho were just getting started. They bought four more horses at the 2022 Keeneland September sale, including an Into Mischief colt that cost $1 million and a Quality Road colt that cost $1.15 million. Coelho said that he and Bellinger have about 20 horses with Lukas, including five yearlings bought at the 2023 Keeneland Sale. Coelho predicted that this year's 2-year-olds will prove to be the best group they have sent Lukas's way so far. Both Coelho and Bellinger have witnessed first hand what it has meant to Lukas to be given this chance by the owners. “Over the last three years, people who are close to him will tell us that this has revitalized Wayne,” Coelho said. “He's actually in a better place physically and mentally than he was a few years ago because of the opportunities we've given him. Wayne has worked his tail off to get us here. He knows we've invested a lot of money and put a lot of faith in him. He wanted to get here to this year's Derby just as much for us as for himself.” The post BC Stables LLC: In Wayne We Trust appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. West Memorial's freshman sire Caracaro (by Uncle Mo) was handed his first stakes win, as the colt kicked on late in the Kentucky Juvenile S. at Churchill Downs on Thursday. The John Hancock trainee was last seen debuting a close second at Keeneland Apr. 7. Overlooked as a 17-1 shot here, the bay watched as 'TDN Rising Star' Shoot It True (Munnings) and recent Resolute Racing acquisition Mensa (Complexity) battled one another for the lead up the backstretch. The longshot saved his strength around the far turn, but was never that far off the frontrunners as the top of the lane arrived. When the pacesetters began to waver, West Memorial rolled down the center of the course and scooped up the prize. The second to race out of a dam who herself never made it to the track, the winner has a yearling half-brother by Tacitus. Vita Bella was bred to Olympiad for this spring. She is a half-sister to sire Mo Town (Uncle Mo), SP Champagne Lady (Uncle Mo), who went to Barronstown Stud for $1.45 million at last year's Keeneland November Sale while in foal to Flightline, and to 'TDN Rising Star' Justique (Justify). What started out as one of racing's best feel-good stories in years ended in tragedy Wednesday at Oaklawn when the fleet Iowa-bred Tyler's Tribe (Sharp Azteca) died following a four-furlong workout. Afterward, the track issued a press release in which it said that trainer Tim Martin's entries for the final week of racing at Oaklawn were being scratched by the stewards. “In the interest of all parties, Oaklawn must take these actions to properly investigate the matter,” the statement read. It also said that there would be an investigation regarding a horse named Collins (Into Mischief), but it was not clear what, if anything, that had to do with Tyler's Tribe or what happened to that horse. Equibase lists the trainer of Collins as Rey Hernandez and he worked out Thursday, a day after Tyler's Tribe. Tyler's Tribe was named after co-owner Tom Lepic's grandson, Tyler Juhl of Iowa City, Iowa, who was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of cancer found in children. Lepic hoped that the horse's exploits could lift the spirits of his grandson. Tyler's Tribe more than did his part. Racing exclusively at Prairie Meadows, he won his first five starts by a combined margin of 59 3/4 lengths. He had done enough that he had earned his way into the 2022 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, but bled severely in that race and had to be eased. He was never again the same. He ran four more times, failing to win, and bled in both of what would be his last two starts, the Bachelor S. and an Oaklawn allowance race. Lepic said Thursday that Tyler's Tribe did not bleed in the workout, but the cause of death remained a mystery. “All I know is that he had just finished his workout and he died on the track,” Lepic said. “(Co-owner and trainer) Tim (Martin) said he had worked great and had a good gallop out. Tim said he was shocked by what happened. All of us, we are completely devastated. This horse meant so much to us. “There are people who are going to say we never should have run him again. Tim said he did whatever the vets told him to do. We followed every guideline and even gave him a year off. We were told that he was fine and that he wouldn't bleed again. We loved this horse and never would have done anything to hurt him.” Lepic is hoping that a necropsy will provide some answers. “We don't know what the cause of death was and have asked for a necropsy,” Lepic said. “We are very eager to find out.” Lepic said he spent part of Thursday looking at photos of Tyler's Tribe with his daughter, who is Tyler's mother. “We are devastated and so is everyone in our family and people who are close to us. I spent part of my day reminiscing and looking at photos of the horse with my daughter,” he said. Tyler's Tribe was 5-for-10 in his career and earned $327,661. He was purchased at the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association Fall Mixed Sale 2021 for $34,000. The Ballyboy Stables-consigned Swing Davis (Fr) (No Risk At All {Fr}) (lot 5) took top billing at Thursday's Goffs Punchestown Sale when selling to Mags O'Toole on behalf of Robcour for €320,000. The four-year-old was successful on the second of her two starts in points-to-points, having failed to complete on her first attempt, running out a commanding winner at Loughanmore last week. From the family of the top-class chaser Klairon Davis (Fr) (Rose Laurel {Ire}), Swing Davis is set to go into training with Gordon Elliott. That proved to be a recurring theme at a sale where the top four lots were all bought by Elliott or his clients, including Familiar Dreams (GB) (Postponed {Ire}) (lot 1) and Ma Jacks Hill (Ire) (Famous Name {GB}) (lot 9), both of whom sold for €310,000. The five-year-old Familiar Dreams was consigned by Anthony McCann's Shabra Stables–having gained her fourth win in succession in the G3 Weatherbys General Stud Book Irish EBF Mares INH Flat Race at Punchestown barely 24 hours earlier–while Ma Jacks Hill, a four-year-old from the family of Grade 1-winning chasers Watson Lake (Ire) (Be My Native) and Feronily (Ire) (Getaway {Ger}), was consigned by Ciaran Fennessy's Glenabo Stables following his win in a Dromahane point-to-point last week. The clearance rate was down 9% on last year's record-breaking sale as 18 horses sold from 22 offered for a gross of €2,878,000. The average dropped to €159,889 (-18%) and the median also fell to €140,000 (-18%). Five lots made at least €200,000 compared to nine in 2023. Separate from those statistics was the final lot of the night as Goffs auctioned the silks worn by Rachael Blackmore aboard the sale's most famous graduate, Honeysuckle (GB) (Sulamani {Ire}), in all of her many Grade 1 triumphs. Generously donated by Honeysuckle's owner, Kenny Alexander, in aid of ChildVision's new indoor equine therapeutic centre named in memory of Jack de Bromhead, the colours sold for €105,000 to Peter Molony, who was bidding on behalf of a syndicate of Friends of the Irish National Stud where the framed colours will be displayed. Reflecting on the sale, Goffs chief executive, Henry Beeby, said, “Tonight's Punchestown Sale was the usual lively affair at what is the original festival sale, with some mighty prices and a huge crowd of active participants. Last year's record-breaking sale was always going to be hard to match but 2024 compares very favorably with previous renewals and we have no doubt that there are some real stars amongst the graduates. “Finally, we were so pleased to be able to assist the Jack de Bromhead Equine Centre for ChildVision by selling Honeysuckle's racing silks at the end of the evening. It was wonderful to see such interest, not surprising given her legendary status. They were sold to Peter Molony for €105,000 who was bidding on behalf of Friends of the Irish National Stud.” The post Elliott Makes Statement With Domination Of Goffs Punchestown Sale appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 6th-Churchill Downs, $123,155, Alw, 5-2, (NW1X), 3yo/up, 7 1/2f, 1:27.44, ft, nose. CASTLEWARDEN (c, 4, Into Mischief–Calm Water, by Empire Maker) hit the board in his first pair of attempts last year, then punched through by 1 1/2 lengths over the Oaklawn slop Mar. 15. The 9-5 second choice tracked a pair of leaders up the backstretch. Castlewarden accelerated around the far turn and took over the lead before the top of the lane. Seemingly in control, favored Classic Legacy (Into Mischief) rallied in the stretch and the pair traded blows all the way to the wire with Castlewarden getting the bob. The winner is a full-brother to G1 Dubai World Cup winner Laurel River, G1SW-UAE, GSW-USA, $7,470,676. A full-sister to MGISW Emollient and a half-sister to MGISP Hofburg (Tapit), Calm Water is also responsible for the 2-year-old filly Long Wave (Constitution) and a yearling colt by Constitution.
