The five-year-old son of Reliable Man was having his first tilt at stakes level, having won six of his previous 12 raceday starts. “It was a really good run, but he was just met by a better horse on the day, the other horse (Snazzytavi) was very smart,” Sweeney said. “He tried really hard and I am very happy. “It was a reasonable field, so it was good to see him measure up against that class. He is only very lightly tried, he has had 13 starts and only been unplaced three times.” Chattahoochee will now likely have one more run before heading for a spell in preparation for what could be a big spring. “He will probably have another run in three weeks at Counties, there is an Open 1500m, and then he will probably head to the paddock,” Sweeney said. “I would say we will target the Hawke’s Bay Carnival with him. He is still a very green horse and keeps on improving, and his racing manners are getting better every time. “I have got a lot of confidence going forward that he is going to measure up against the better ones.” Earlier on the Te Rapa card, stablemate Kiwi Man was victorious under stable apprentice Ngakau Hailey. “He is an out-and-out stayer. He has been hard to place with trying to get the right distances for him,” Sweeney said. “I am not too sure what we are going to do with him, whether he will have another run or go to the paddock, we will just see how he is in the next couple of days. “We are possibly looking at the Rotorua Cup (Listed, 2200m) but more than likely he will go out. He has been in work for a long time so probably needs to have a break before we get him back towards the end of winter and getting him ready for spring time. “I would like to see him in a couple of the Cups races next year because he can stay all day.” Horse racing news View the full article

Up until August 9, 2020, Stephen Panus was leading the type of life that many of us envy. He was the president of the Jockey Club's America's Best Racing brand, lived in an affluent community in Connecticut and, most importantly, had a close-knit family that he adored. There was his wife Kellie and sons Jake and Liam, both of whom were special in their unique ways. “Jake was an immense, magnetic personality who lived his life uplifting others,” Panus writes in his recently released book “Walk On.” It's not that Panus took his family and his life for granted. It's just that he knew nothing else and never thought that it could all be taken away from him with one phone call from a doctor informing him that Jake, then 16, had been killed in an automobile accident. Jake was not the driver but his girlfriend was and she was driving under the influence and drove the car off the road. “There are losses that indelibly alter your life and upend how you view the universe,” he writes. “Losing Jake was just that for me and my family. It was soul-crushing.” He no doubt wrote the book not just to memorialize Jake but in hopes that putting his thoughts down on paper would help ease the pain. The Panus family struggled mightily, but was determined to find a way out. Among their efforts was the creation of the Jake Panus Walk-on Football Endowed Scholarship, thus the name of the book. Father and son were diehard fans of the University of South Carolina football team and the scholarship is awarded each year to a “walk on” on the team, the players who rarely play and are not on scholarship. They also set up a scholarship fund for students living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Oglala County, South Dakota. In the summer of 2019, Jake participated in his first church youth group mission, which sent him to the Indian reservation. There he was struck by and moved by the poverty and the hopelessness that seemed pervasive among the younger members of the tribe. Panus never pretends that, eventually, all might became right with his world or that things would ever again be the same as they were before that awful August day in 2020. But he refused to let the death of his child destroy him. While filled with grief, he also was filled with hope. That hope came from his desire to tackle his grief head on and keep doing so until he could find a way out. “The exercise of chronicling my grief after losing and embarking on a migration from pain to purpose has been grueling yet necessary. As it turns out, I may have [finally] written myself out of the darkness of my circumstances and mustered the mettle to walk on in my life,” he writes toward the end of the book. In life and from a young age, Jake Panus taught his parents, his brother and anyone he touched how to be kind, humble, honest, grateful, forgiving and hopeful. Following his death, it was if he had left a blueprint for all others to follow on how to have a rich and fulfilling life dedicated to bringing happiness to friends, family, even strangers. A blueprint of how to overcome your fears, how to keep pushing forward and how to live life to its fullest. “Don't waste another hour or day allowing a life setback, challenge or obstacle to devour you,” Panus writes. “The ability and power source to conquer this resides within you.” He knows that he will always grieve for his son and that there will always be a hole in his soul when it comes to Jake. But he never loses his fighting spirit or his quest to come out of this ordeal as undamaged as possible. Be authentic, have integrity and humility, be honest, learn to forgive and, most of all, be resilient. “There it was in black and white,” Panus writes. “I had a choice. It really was that simple. I could move toward the light one small step at a time, or I could allow the darkness to further engulf my spirit and destroy me.” Walk On was not meant to be a self-help book, but, for anyone who suffered through a terrible loss, that's exactly what it is. Panus's sadness is evident from the first page to the last but so is his determination to not let his grief destroy him. For anyone who has suffered a loss or is struggling through, what Panus writes is inspirational. He offers hope. “Undoubtedly, we each need support in grief, but the trek to accepting or being able to fill the cracks of one's heart with light instead of pain is a solitary one,” he writes. “And what I have come to genuinely embrace is that the intensify of my grief over losing Jake unabashedly matched the intensity of my unconditional love for my son.” Walk On is beautifully written and serves a wider purpose than consoling others who have lost a loved one. By Michael Guerin Finally the Australian pacers get draws they can work with at Alexandra Park on Friday night. While Just Believe has dominated the major trots over the last month from handy enough draws (not that he needed them) the Australian pacing team of Speak The Truth and Better Eclipse haven’t been able to buy a draw in either the Race by Grins or the Taylor Mile last Friday. But that changes in the $110,000 Dawson Harford Messenger Pace this Friday when Speak The Truth gets barrier 1 over 2700m and Better Eclipse will start from barrier 6. Aiding them even more of the fact at least one of the two Kiwi big names Don’t Stop Dreaming has a second line draw but Merlin has barrier 3 and last Friday’s 155-1 winner Mach Shard starts from barrier 5. That at least gives Speak The Truth’s driver Adam Sanderson the option of staying in front should he lead and he did just that in the Miracle Mile in March so he is the tactical key to the race. The big Queenslander has had little luck at the autumn carnival so far but with a roughie in American Me drawn behind him, Sanderson looks likely to roll the dice if he can hold the front. While the Messenger may look different for the Aussies the feature trot, the $110,000 Peter Breckon Memorial National, could well end the same way as the TAB Trot and Lyell Creek Stakes as Just Believe has drawn barrier 4, which is most importantly inside Muscle Mountain in barrier 5. Oscar Bonavena has the ace draw and looks set to trail Just Believe again if the Victorian superstar can hold Muscle Mountain at the start. On an incredibly deep night of racing Northern Oaks heroine All You Need Is Me returns with the ace draw in a Magness Benrow Sires’ Stakes heat while Princess Sadie (4) and Empire City (8) clash in the What The Hill at Woodlands Stud Northern Trotting Oaks. The $110,000 Breckon Farms Young Gun Final has had some spice added with unbeaten filly Youretheonethatiwant taking one the boys in what is a rarity in New Zealand Group 1 juvenile racing. If she can beat Demon Blue and Cyclone Jordy she would add to a remarkable record for her connections as trainers Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan have won the last three Young Guns Finals, all with pacers owned by Youretheonethatiwant’s owner Dean Shannon. Mensa (Complexity), the first 2-year-old winner for his freshman sire, sold on a final bid of $740,000 April 29 in the one-horse Mensa Flash Sale, a record-setting sum for the Fasig-Tipton Digital platform, the company announced Monday. Offered by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for D.J. Stables LLC Graduate, the colt went the way of John Stewart's Resolute Bloodstock. Mensa is entered in Thursday's Kentucky Juvenile S. at Churchill Downs, where he has been installed as the morning-line second choice. “We are always looking to add talented runners to our stable and we're thrilled to have such an exciting 2-year-old colt in Mensa,” said Stewart. “We have already bought several horses on Fasig-Tipton Digital, and obviously love the platform. One of the many trademarks of Kentucky Derby week during mornings on the backside at Churchill Downs is the media frenzy that never fails to ensue as dozens of outlets vie for interviews with Derby and Oaks connections. Some owners shy from the camera, others embrace their moment in the spotlight, and most fall somewhere in between. One owner who will not be hesitating to get his horse's name out there over the next week is Brook Smith, a part-owner in GI Blue Grass S. winner Sierra Leone (Gun Runner). And it's not that Smith will be jumping at the chance for an interview because his colt is expected to be one of the horses to beat, nor is it because the Louisville resident has been dreaming of having a horse in the Kentucky Derby all of his life. That's all true, but the real reasoning for Smith is that any chance to talk about Sierra Leone also gives him the opportunity to shout out the Backside Learning Center (BLC). The BLC is a non-profit organization that provides support and resources for the community of racetrack workers at Churchill Downs and their families. Sierra Leone is enrolled in the BLC's “Purses for a Purpose” initiative, where a percentage of all of his earnings go straight to the BLC to fund programs that promote health and wellness, education, family empowerment and community engagement throughout the backside. The way Smith sees it, this partnership with the BLC has served to increase the number of Sierra Leone fans going into the first Saturday in May. “When you're in a situation like this, sharing it is the best thing whether it's with your partners or the people around the shedrow here,” said Smith. “It's everybody's moment, everybody's horse. The way it has worked out because [Sierra Leone] is in the program, it's going to put a spotlight on the Backside Learning Center.” Trained by Chad Brown and also owned by Peter Brant, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Westerberg, Sierra Leone is the first Purses for a Purpose horse to run in the Kentucky Derby. “I think other owners will really be inspired by Brook and what he's doing,” said Sherry Stanley, the executive director of the BLC. “We're hoping that this is just the beginning. Hopefully we can have one Derby horse every year. That would be incredible. I think for us, this is really exciting in that it sets a precedent with a team that is so high profile and is getting so much exposure around the Derby.” A longtime supporter of the BLC, Smith recalled how he first learned of the nonprofit by accident, citing that organization's building was close to two other places he frequented on the backside: the betting window and the track kitchen. In 2022, he placed a $10,000 Kentucky Derby future wager on Tiz the Bomb and announced that any winnings would go directly to the BLC. While that bet didn't bring home any checks, Smith's idea for the Purses for a Purpose initiative has provided significant funding for the BLC. “The thing that stuck out to me was their budget,” Smith recalled of his early interactions with the BLC. “I was like, 'So you're running this with all these people, all these barns, all these folks that are working back here,' and it was minuscule. Obviously Churchill Downs supports the Backside Learning Center, but they need funding well beyond that. So I thought, 'Well what about all these people that are winning these purses? Maybe we could come up with a program where owners could contribute a percentage of their horse's purses to support the backside, because the backside is supporting their horses.'” Launched in 2020, Purses for a Program has celebrated success with dozens of participants from claimers to allowance horses and even a few stakes horses–a handful of which were campaigned by Smith's own Rocket Ship Racing–but there has never been as high-profile of a participant as Sierra Leone. Smith owns 16% of Sierra Leone and has pledged 10% of the colt's earnings to the BLC, so a chunk of that newly raised $5 million Kentucky Derby purse alone would go a long way for the nonprofit, but Smith has also said he will donate an additional $100,000 to the organization if his colt wins. “At the end of the day, what's the difference?” said Smith. “I mean, this horse hopefully continues to race quite prolifically and likely has a career as a sire, so why not spread it around?” This kind of philosophy is typical of Smith, according to Stanley. She said that the outgoing owner has been an irreplaceable advocate for the BLC over the past decade. “He just has such a magnetic personality and is so incredibly positive and enthusiastic,” she said. “He has such a great heart and a belief in our mission and respect for the workers back here and for all that goes into making the industry happen. He's not the kind of person that just wants to get out a checkbook and write checks. He wants to really serve as an example for others.” Purses for a Purpose only had just over a dozen enrolled horses at the start of Derby season, but thanks to Smith's fervent PR, the numbers have already started to grow over the past few weeks. Now Smith has an ambitious mission for the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. He hopes to get 150 horses enrolled in Purses for a Purpose. “Even if it was just a 1% pledge, that moves the needle,” he said. “They're looking to expand and they need a new building. Hopefully through these types of conversations, more owners will hear about it and think it sounds like a great idea. I'm not trying to tell people what to do with their money, but it seems like a no-brainer to me.” The team at the BLC will be plenty busy during Derby week, but after the weekend's festivities they will shift their focus to planning for their upcoming 20th anniversary celebration. When the organization opened its doors in 2004, there were two employees. Now the count is up to almost 20. In 2023, 93 adults were actively enrolled in the BLC's English language class and 47 youth participated in after-school programming. 33 individuals received therapy from an on-site social worker and 40 families participated in the BLC's weekly fresh food market. We feel like we're doing important things and really transforming lives.” As for Smith, there will be a lack of sleep but an abundance of anticipation in the coming days as he waits to watch Sierra Leone enter the starting gate. When asked that familiar question of how it feels to have his horse running in the Kentucky Derby, he described the experience as surreal. “I really just want the horse to continue to do as well as he has,” he said. “He's in great hands. He certainly has a good mind and spirit. He just loves to be out there, whether it's training or racing. Applications for the Stud Start program, funded by the Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) organization, are now being accepted, the group stated via press release on Monday. Stud Start was launched last year to compliment TBA's flagship training program Fast Track. The former is intended to provide a gateway into the breeding industry for people with little to no previous experience, while the latter is particularly aimed at individuals in rural communities looking for a career change or to re-enter the workforce, and who want to pursue a career in the Thoroughbred breeding industry. Successful applicants will take a six-week tester program that combines online learning with a week-long learning block in Scone, where students will receive class-based education and hands-on experience with horses. In addition to putting into practice the lessons completed from the previous five weeks, farm visits, guest speakers, and networking opportunities will also be introduced. Students will be provided with accommodation during the week in Scone, and depending on the participant's travel requirements, financial assistance may also be provided. “Stud Start will provide successful participants the confidence and skills to enter a career within thoroughbred industry. This year we are excited to offer not only face-to-face learning but a hybrid structure of online study and hands-on practice throughout the six weeks, which is a development from the launch of the program in 2023,” says Madison Tims, TBA's education and projects manager. TBA is encouraging any interested parties to apply for the program by Friday, May 17. 1988 GI Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}) will have her accomplishments recognized throughout the week via a partnership between Horse Racing Radio Network and Keeneland Sales, the pair announced Monday. Coverage of 'Winning Colors Week' began April 29 and will continue through May 4 with tributes to Winning Colors held on air and displayed across the network's various social media channels. The Derby winner, purchased by D. Wayne Lukas from Keeneland as a yearling in 1986, was named Champion 3-year-old Filly and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000. Horse Racing Radio Network will also take the opportunity to celebrate the late A.P. Indy during GI Belmont S. week June 3-8. Turkish stallion Red Giant (Giant's Causeway) has died from old age, according to Turkish horseman Tarik Tekce. A course record-setting Grade I-winner in his time on the track in the States, Red Giant initially stood at New Zealand's Westbury Stud before being purchased by the Turkish Jockey Club in 2016, where he would remain until his passing. In total, he sired three champions, five Group/Graded winners, and 14 listed winners across both hemispheres with his chief offspring being 2017 Singaporean champion polytrack horse Nova Strike (NZ). Far from the only accomplished runner in his immediate family, Red Giant was kin to MGSP-US Carnera as well as GSW & GISP-US Wyomia. This is the female family of Italian champion 3-year-old filly Proskona and the extended family of notable names like French multiple Group 1-winner Act One (GB) and 2023 Broodmare of the Year Modern Ideals (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). That mare is best known as the dam of U.S. champion turf horse, multiple Grade/Group 1-winning Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and his half-sister dual Group/Grade I-winner Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). After a busy weekend of works, it was a relatively quiet morning for the 20 contenders for Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs Monday. Only two Derby horses are expected to have published workouts this week, with Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) and T O Password (Jpn) (Copano Rickey {Jpn}) scheduled to work Tuesday morning. A day before those works, both Japanese runners followed similar routines Monday, warming up in the mile chute for a half-hour before galloping a mile and a half and then returning to the chute to cool down before walking back to the Quarantine Barn. Trainer Brad Cox's Derby trio, GII Louisiana Derby winner Catching Freedom (Constitution), GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. winner Encino (Nyquist), and GI Toyota Blue Grass S. runner-up Just a Touch (Justify) all returned to the track Monday to jog an easy mile following Saturday works. “All three horses exited their works in good shape,” Cox said. “They'll gallop the rest of the week and be ready for Saturday.” Jockey Florent Geroux, who won the 2021 Derby via disqualification aboard Mandaloun (Into Mischief), will be aboard Just a Touch Saturday and was on hand at Churchill to watch the colt train Monday. “I'm really excited about his chances,” said Geroux. “He's light on experience, but he's a very talented colt. I think he's ready to run a big race.” The Chad Brown-trained duo of Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) and Domestic Product (Practical Joke) also returned to the track Monday following Saturday works. Both jogged the wrong way once around the Churchill Downs oval during the 7:30 a.m. training period. While Blue Grass winner Sierra Leone has garnered most of the attention, Brown said not to overlook Domestic Product, who will be making his first start in the Derby since winning the Mar. 9 GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby. “The horse has really been giving a great appearance here at Churchill, he's really glowing and beaming with energy,” Brown said. “I couldn't be more pleased with both of the Derby colts. Knock on wood they just go into the race this way. Domestic Product, he's a hell of a nice horse. He just looks terrific.” Granpollo Stables' Grand Mo the First (Uncle Mo) galloped two miles t 6:30 under Amel Macias for trainer Victor Barboza Jr. An expected longshot in the Derby, the colt is coming off a distant third-place finish behind likely favorite Fierceness (City of Light) in the GI Curlin Florida Derby, but Barbazo sees a different scenario Saturday. “This time it will be different, a different race,” Barboza said. “The pace will be quicker this time. The last time, nobody fought him. He got away with :24 and :49 and nobody fought him. This will be different.” Ribble Farms, Michael Eisterman, Earl Silver, Kenneth and Dave Fishbein's Honor Marie (Honor Code) galloped 1 1/2 miles at 7:30 a.m. Monday under regular rider Maurilio Garcia. The bay colt, second in the Louisiana Derby, will be the first Derby mount for jockey Ben Curtis. “I came over to North America in November and I never thought I'd be riding in the Kentucky Derby,” said Curtis, a native of Ireland who was riding in Europe. “It's a fantastic opportunity on a horse who I think could show up brilliantly on Derby Day. His stamina is there, his pedigree is there and everything he's shown to this point says he will stay for the 1 1/4-mile. There's question marks on others in the race, but he crosses off a lot of those question marks.” Curtis continued, “He's a very laid back, professional horse. A lot of the good ones are. They know how to keep their cool and use the right energy when it matters when the gates open. The way he goes through a race he likes to warm up into it. He puts himself in the right spots. During a time where rising costs and a shaky underbelly to the yearling and foal market is causing many producers to rejig their approach to the breeding season, James Cloney certainly did his bit to provide smaller breeders either side of the Irish Sea with some much-needed encouragement when Camille Pissarro (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) entered the Royal Ascot picture by making a winning debut for Aidan O'Brien at Navan last weekend. Sold by the breeder to Coolmore's MV Magnier and Peter Brant's White Birch Farm for 1.25 million gns at the Tattersalls October Book 1 session, Camille Pissarro fulfilled a dream of Cloney's to one day produce a horse that cleared seven-figures in the ring. But the dream is only beginning with Camille Pissarro, a half-brother to Cloney's flagbearer Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}), who was bred from bargain buy Entreat (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Subsequent Coventry S. winner River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) won the same maiden that Camille Pissarro picked up on Saturday and Cloney is hoping that his high-profile graduate can follow a similar trajectory. He said, “It's very exciting. Even early doors, the rumours coming out of Ballydoyle was that he is in the top of the juvenile pecking order. It's very hard for that to translate onto the track so you are always cautious with your thoughts. But it was a real relief to see him do it and it's hugely exciting going forward. It's quite unbelievable really because a lot of people wouldn't have thought he would be a real two-year-old type at the sales because he's a big, strong horse but the family has just been really good at producing those two-year-olds.” Cloney added, “If he can be a horse for the future it would be amazing because he's an absolutely stunning horse–very similar to his father Wootton Bassett. He's a faultless specimen.” Cloney's Book 1 achievement was one of the main talking points from the sale. A pharmacist by trade, he keeps just 15 mares along with his father-in-law at their CN Farm in County Kilkenny. The pair acquired Entreat, a Cheveley Park Stud-bred mare, at the July Sale in 2016 through BBA Ireland for just 14,000gns. Her son Golden Horde had already put the pedigree in lights with a G1 Commonwealth Cup victory but clearing a million in the ring was described by Cloney as “a dream” at the time. He recalled, “I think it's still sinking in! It was an unbelievable result. The great thing about horse racing, it allows you to dream about these things the whole time. I was hoping that this horse could be the one to do it. Even taking the mare to Wootton Bassett, it was a pretty big financial gamble for the farm, but when we got a nice colt, we were hoping and dreaming the whole way along. He travelled strong at the sales–anyone who looked at him was keen on him. There was a lot of competition between the Wootton Bassetts at the sale–I think there were 13 others–so, for him to outclass them all, it was something pretty remarkable and thankfully that was reflected in the sales ring.” Cloney has been here before. Not only did Golden Horde fly the flag for the breeder, but fellow Group 1-winning sprinter Dream Of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) features among his roll of honour, suggesting such results are far from a fluke-regardless of what the modest breeder might try and convince you. “A good dose of luck has been helpful along the way,” he says of his success. “My father-in-law is here every day and respects old farming traditions. We like buying stock with strong damlines. We're not claiming to be any experts but there is a strong focus on damsires here and it is all about the strength in depth of a mare's pedigree, regardless of size or conformation.” Obviously Pivotal ticked a box when snapping up Entreat? “In a big way. Pivotal would have probably been at the top of our list. It's very exciting going forward now because Entreat is in foal to Justify. That was a big risk–not only by sending her to America but financially as well. Thankfully she is in foal on an early cover so hopefully there is more excitement to come. After the sales result, it was nice to be able to go and do something a little bit special. Even before the sale of Camille Pissarro, it was earmarked that we would send the mare to Justify. The stallion has gone from strength to strength and, the morning she arrived, he went on to have winners at the Breeders' Cup. She went to America late last year and the plan is for her to return home here in the coming weeks. We can't wait to have her back here. There is another dream attached to her now. We'll be holding our breath until she returns back to the yard safe and sound.” It begs the question; for a farm that was built on securing value at the sales, is there a temptation to dabble in the higher-end stock, now that the bank balance might allow you to? Cloney explains, “We are still bargain hunting. We added three mares to the broodmare band after selling Camille Pissarro. We bought a Pivotal mare from Cheveley Park, which we stretched the budget to buy at 40,000gns, a Siyouni (Fr) and then one sexier mare called Minoria (GB) [for 115,000gns]. She might not have been for everyone, given she is by Harbour Watch (Ire), but she has already produced a Group 3-placed filly [It's Showtime Baby (GB) (Showcasing {GB})] from her first foal. We know how hard it is to produce black-type horses so, when she did it from her first produce, we said we'd try and buy her. It looks a promising family.” He added, “Selling Camille Pissarro did allow us to reinvest. Sometimes I think we have more imagination than what the market wants so it was nice to be able to get those mares over the winter. In general, the principals will stay the same.” When Dream Of Dreams burst onto the scene, Cloney was at a very different juncture of his life. The breeding business was just getting off the ground and there was a small matter of a wedding to pay for. As it transpired, the farm was forced to sell the dam of the Sir Michael Stoute-trained sprinter. While Cloney acknowledges that there is a different kind of pressure hanging over the operation some years later, he admits to being able to enjoy the emergence of his latest start that bit better. He explained, “We've actually put ourselves under similar pressure. When we produced Dream Of Dreams, we were a little bit tight on grazing ground, so we relocated only a mile away but it meant getting a new farm up and running and putting in new facilities. There was a home found for the Camille Pissarro money very quickly! But we are in a place now where we can breed for a lifetime.
