  1. Fangirl will return in Saturday’s Group 1 Winx Stakes. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Chris Waller is poised to tackle the first Group 1 race of the Sydney season with up to six of his top stars in Saturday’s Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick. Five of them—Fangirl, Via Sistina, Riff Rocket, Zougotcha, and Atishu—had exhibition gallops at Rosehill on Saturday, with Buckaroo also set to join them. Waller, who has won the race named after his champion mare seven times, including with Fangirl last year, is confident in his squad’s chances, though he notes the outcome will depend on the race dynamics. “All of them have come up well,” Waller said. “They’re all individuals, yet they’ve all done similar work and had similar preparations, and everything has been straightforward until now. “They will all run well, but it will come down to luck in running, the way the race is run, the tempo of the race, and how much pressure is on up front.” Horse racing news View the full article
  2. Carlyon Stakes contender Bold Bastille. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Racing Photos) Bold Bastille is set to capitalise on a change in the conditions of Saturday’s Listed Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley as she begins her spring campaign. Traditionally restricted to four-year-olds and older, this year’s Listed race is now open to three-year-olds, giving Bold Bastille the opportunity to compete while carrying just 50.5 kilograms in the sprint. Co-trainer Ben Hayes is optimistic that this race could serve as a valuable prep for the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) on September 7, also held at The Valley. “She gets a nice, light weight. She’s a winner at the track. We can see how she goes against the older horses and then decide whether she runs in the Group 1,” Hayes, who trains alongside his brothers Will and JD, told Racing.com. Bold Bastille impressed in an 800-metre jump-out at Flemington on August 9, and Hayes expressed his satisfaction with her performance. Horse racing news View the full article
  3. The Ciaron Maher trained Another Wil. (Photo by George Sal/Racing Photos) Ciaron Maher-trained Another Wil (Street Boss) is set to bypass the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 31. Instead, connections have opted to start the Group 3 winner in a Benchmark 100 (1400m) race on the same day. Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull shared with Racing.com that while Another Wil might be aimed at a Group 1 race later, his initial target will be at a more manageable level. “He’s going to go to a 1400 (metre) at the end of the month to kick off, and then it’s performance-based from there,” Turnbull explained. The horse has made impressive strides, jumping from a rating of 64 in January to 102 in April. “The idea would be that we are running well there rather than going to a race like a Memsie. “If he was to win that (BM100), you’d look at say a Makybe (Diva Stakes) second-up over a mile. He’s obviously a very talented horse. “He’s still got a little bit to go mentally. He’s pretty hot and jazzy at times, so physically he’s there, but mentally he’s still got a touch to go.” Horse racing news View the full article

  5. At sunny Del Mar, it was first-time starter Tenma (Nyquist–Amagansett, by Tapit) who battled a rival filly down the lane to graduate. The OBS April grad who was featured in TDN's Summer Breezes and Sunday Insights, went off as a 6-1 shot here. Even though stablemate Usha (Tiz the Law) came busting out of the gate, Tenma did not panic as she steadily began to reel in the pacesetter around the far turn. With a full head of steam, the juvenile won by a head in what was a pitched battle with Mancuso (McKinzie). The final running time was 1:04.22. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0. Sales History: $200,000 '23 KEESEP; $850,000 '24 OBSAPR. O-Baoma Corp; B-B. Flay Thoroughbreds (Ky); T-Bob Baffert. 7. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Soon after the running of the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga Race Course on July 19, Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey had seen enough. Corporate Power (Curlin), who finished second that day, earned his trip to the big leagues. He will be in the starting gate when the $1.25 million, Grade I Travers Stakes is run for the 155th time. McGaughey knows a thing or two about getting a horse ready for the Midsummer Derby. He has won the race four times, the most recent being with Code of Honor in 2019. One other trainer–Elliott Burch–has also won the Travers four times. The all-time record for Travers wins is owned by Bert Mulholland, who had five spanning from 1939-1963. McGaughey, sitting in his office at his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track on an overcast Sunday morning, wasn't going to say the past success necessarily helps as he gets Corporate Power ready for his Travers date. “I've been lucky in it,” McGaughey said. “I don't have confidence going into knowing he is either going to run good or he can't run good.” Corporate Power has two wins and two seconds in five career starts, all of them coming during his 3-year-old season. He was bought by Donald Adam's Courtlandt Farms at the 2022 Keeneland September Sale for $925,000. Unraced as a 2-year-old, Corporate Power was favored in three of his first four starts, including his maiden breaker at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 24. He won the Sir Barton Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on May 24. Then came the Curlin where he chased the Chad Brown-trained Unmatched Wisdom (Cairo Prince) the entire 1 1/8 miles before losing by a length. “I was very pleased with his race in the Curlin even though he didn't win,” McGaughey said. “Chad's horse was on the lead pretty easy all the way and we had to do the work. I think the light went on a lot after the Curlin.” Corporate Power had his final tune-up for the Travers on Friday, working a bullet four furlongs in 47.45 (1/45). In the Midsummer Derby, Corporate Power will be facing the toughest competition of his young career. McGaughey says he is up for it but knows the horse will really have to bring it. “If we get a pace and he is good enough, I think he'll have a chance,” he said, “It's a pretty darned good bunch. Do they all want to run that far? I'm not sure. Going 1 ¼ miles, especially off that work, he should be in pretty good shape.” Whitney Winner Arthur's Ride Gets Back To Work Break time is over for Arthur's Ride (Tapit). The striking grey/roan 4-year-old, was back on the Saratoga work tab Friday. He went four furlongs in 49.66 (35/70) on the Oklahoma Training Track for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Arthur's Ride (outside) | Sarah Andrew Arthur's Ride claimed the GI Whitney Stakes on Aug. 3 by 2 1/4 lengths in gate-to-wire fashion. The breakout win came in his seventh career start. It was the first stakes race of any kind for the colt, who is owned by Glassman Racing. It wasn't like this came off as a surprise. Even though National Treasure (Quality Road) was in the field and the 4-5 favorite (he finished sixth), Arthur's Pride was the third choice in the wagering and paid $15.80. “We knew he could run,” jockey Junior Alvarado said at the Oklahoma Training Track. “I would not think Mr. Mott would put a horse in like that to get embarrassed. He knew he could compete in there. He is in the Hall of Fame for something!” Mott said the original plan was to have Arthur's Ride ready for the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes on the final weekend of the Saratoga meet. But, he did not want to wait until the end of the season to run him; before the Whitney, Arthur's Ride had been impressive in winning an allowance at Saratoga on June 7 during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga. By winning the Whitney, Arthur's Ride earned a trip to the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 2. The Witney was part of the Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” program. “If he is doing well, we would probably run him back (in the Jockey Club Gold Cup),” Mott said. “We'll probably want to run one more before the Breeders' Cup.” Pletcher Sorry to See Kingsbarns Go, But Happy For His New Career As A Stallion Just when it looked like Kingsbarns (Uncle Mo) had become a major player in the older horse division, he was gone. The 4-year-old colt had his racing career terminated last week when it was announced he had been retired after sustaining an injury during training at Saratoga. He is now at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky where he will start his stud career next year. “We are excited for the horse because he has the opportunity to go to Spendthrift,” Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said at his barn on the Oklahoma Training Track. “But it is a little frustrating because I think he was just getting to his best now.” Kingsbarns had won three of four starts this season, the last being the GI Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 29. That had earned him a spot in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic as the race was part of the “Win and You're In” program. Kingsbarns will now end his racing career with six wins in nine career starts. He was three for four this year. “It was just one of those things,” Pletcher said. “It was not a significant injury, but timing wise, we would be giving him 60 days off and then the season is over. It seemed like he was getting better and better. The Stephen Foster was his best race yet.” Pletcher said Kingsbarns “probably” was not going to run next year. Kingsbarns was part of the roster of older male horses in the Pletcher barn that also includes Tapit Trice (Tapit), Bright Future (Curlin) and Crupi (Curlin). Pletcher was not about to respond to a question that asked him to rank his older horses. “I don't rank them,” he said, then smiled, “at least not publicly. That could get me in trouble.” The post Saratoga Notebook, Presented by NYRA Bets: Corporate Power Improving, but is it Enough to Make Him a Travers Player? appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 15. By Brian Sheerin and Adam Houghton DEAUVILLE, France – Talk about a fitting finale. After what could only be described as a patchy opening two days to the August Yearling Sale, a St Mark's Basilica (Fr) filly (lot 270) out of Ecurie des Monceaux's blue hen Prudenzia (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) topped Sunday's concluding session at €1.7 million when sold to Coolmore's MV Magnier. Prudenzia is the gift that keeps giving for Henri Bozo's powerful breeding operation in France. Who could forget her daughter Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who became a brilliant globetrotting filly for the Coolmore partners and Aidan O'Brien after topping this sale at €1.4 million in 2016? Philomene (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) also commanded top-lot status here in 2019 when selling to Godolphin for €1.625 million and she confirmed herself a classy prospect on the racetrack, too, when landing a Group 3 and chasing home Joan Of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the 2021 Prix de Diane. Prudenzia is also the dam of Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), herself a winner of the Irish Oaks, and already a fine producer in her own right with three black-type horses–including the classy Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})–flying the flag for the family with distinction. The chance to buy into families like Prudenzia's does not come around too often but, just as Bozo was thankful to see Coolmore show their respect for such an opportunity in the sales ring, Magnier paid special thanks to Monceaux for supporting the five-time Group 1-winning and dual Classic hero with such a high-quality mating. Magnier said, “In fairness to everyone at Monceaux, they took a big risk in sending a mare like her to a first-season sire. We're just very happy for them. St Mark's Basilica was an incredible racehorse – very tough.” Along with posting the top lot of the entire sale, St Mark's Basilica enjoyed a productive weekend in France with eight lots selling at an average of €446,250 and an aggregate of €3.57 million. Not bad for what was a €65,000 covering fee when he first joined the stallion ranks at Coolmore in 2022. Magnier added, “St Mark's Basilica has had an incredible sale these past few days. Listen, a horse who was as tough and as talented as he was – the champion two-year-old and champion-three-year-old – you have to get behind him. We're grateful to Monceaux for supporting him with such a high-class mare and thankfully he came up with a very nice filly. Obviously Prudenzia was bred in partnership with Lady O'Reilly. She was a superb breeder and will be sorely missed by the industry.” Of the 292 lots offered, 226 were sold at a clearance rate of 77%, representing a 6% drop on last year. The average fell 7% to €217,058 while, perhaps most tellingly, the median dropped by €30,000 to €140,000. The aggregate topped out at €50,237,000, down 11% on last year's figure. Can Lightning Strike Twice For Al Shira'aa With €1m Night Of Thunder? Al Shira'aa Racing returned to a familiar source with their €1-million purchase of Lot 249, a Night Of Thunder (Ire) filly from the Ecurie des Monceaux draft. It was at this sale two years ago that the powerful owner-breeder operation went to €320,000 to secure another Night Of Thunder filly consigned by Monceaux. That turned out to be Vespertilio (Fr), the G2 Debutante Stakes winner and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third who belongs to the same family as not one but two of Sunday's top lots. Not only does Vespertilio share her second dam, Platonic (GB) (Zafonic), with the €1.7-million filly by St Mark's Basilica (Fr), but Platonic also happens to be the third dam of Lot 249, one of five yearlings by Night Of Thunder to sell this week for a total of €3,060,000 and at an average of €612,000. Noting the similarities with Willie McCreery's stable star, Al Shira'aa's Kieran Lalor said, “We bought Vespertilio from Henri [Bozo] and this filly has a very similar profile. Physically, she has a bit more substance. It's a beautiful family and we loved seeing our filly [Vespertilio] down near the bottom [of the page]. Hopefully, this one works out the same for us.” He added, “Henri's farm is one of the best breeders and raisers of racehorses, so when we come here we always hope to come out of the sale with one of his stock. We're delighted to have her. The boss loved her and was very brave in fairness to go to a million, but she's a fabulous filly. We'd love it to be the same result as Vespertilio – one level up from Group 2, hopefully.” The latest filly destined to carry the familiar black and red silks of Al Shira'aa is the second foal out of the Muhaarar (GB) mare Paix (Ire), who gained the biggest success of her career when winning the G3 Prix de Lutece in 2020, following in the footsteps of her own dam, Pacifique (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), who won the same race nine years earlier. Look De Vega Team To Train €1m Filly By The Arc Favourite's Sire Ballylinch Stud set the tempo for what proved to be the strongest of the three days. The sales ground had been abuzz about Lot 240, a filly by resident stallion Lope De Vega (Ire) and out of the stud's Group 3 winner Normandel (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}). She didn't disappoint. Lighting up the early part of the Sunday session when becoming the first of the three yearlings to break the seven-figure marker, the Lope De Vega filly was knocked down to Oliver St Lawrence on behalf of Victorious Racing for €1 million. The agent said, “She wasn't an easy one to get. We loved the filly and Carlos and Yann Lerner will get her to train. They obviously know all about Lope De Vega this year! ” Fawzi Nass and I had discussed these sorts of figures and it was definitely the top end [of the budget] but she is just a lovely filly – a gorgeous-walking filly. Hopefully she can come back for the Prix de Diane or something. We hope.” Victorious Racing has already built up a good reputation with the Lerner stable and, as St Lawrence rightly suggested, the team clearly knows a thing or two about the sire given the yard's exploits this season with the French Derby winner and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe favourite Look De Vega (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}). “Sheikh Nasser has Calif (Ger) (Areion {Ger}), who we bought at the Arc Sale here last year, in training with Carlos and Yann and he won a Group 1 in Germany the other day,” St Lawrence said. Reflecting on the market, he added, “I think the nice horses have been very hard to buy. I was really hoping that I wouldn't have to give a million for her. I was reluctant to but Yann was digging me. She is lovely and came from a good nursery.” Talking points Normal service resumed on Sunday with Monceaux-drafted yearlings responsible for three of the top five yearlings sold. All told, Monceaux sold 31 yearlings for a whopping €12.88 million and an average of €415,484. Al Shaqab was notably strong over the past three days and spent €3.135 million on 10 yearlings. The leading owner-breeder operation ended the sale as the leading buyer. The Americans were similarly important to the trade. Not least John Stewart of Resolute Racing, who signed for Friday's top lot by Wootton Bassett (GB) at €1.4 million. Resolute ended the weekend as the third-strongest buyer in the ring in terms of aggregate spent after snapping up three well-bred yearlings for €2.17 million collectively. Of the leading sires, Wootton Bassett and Siyouni (Fr) were similarly well-represented with 21 and 19 yearlings sold respectively. It was Wootton Bassett who came out best at an average of €314,048 and an aggregate of €6.595 million while Siyouni's 19 yearlings fetched €5.177 million at an average of €272,474. There were four millionaire lots at Arqana over the past few days. The exact same number was posted at this sale last year and in 2022 as well. Flay Active at Arqana from the US American chef Bobby Flay has been active at the Arqana August sale this week, shopping from home online in the US after a busy summer of traveling. Flay has purchased three lots for a total of €635,000, striking for the most expense of the three, a €250,000 filly (Lot 263) by Siyouni from the Ecurie des Monceaux consignment on the final day of the sale. “Most of my focus is the European market, racing in France, England, and Ireland,” said Flay. “I have a bunch of mares over there as well.” Flay, who is well-known for his astute collection of top families, purchased mares at last year's December Mares Sale and also at Arqana in December. He also recently picked up a share in Zarak (Fr) at the July Arqana online pop-up sale for €710,000. “My focus is on sales like this Arqana sale,” said Flay. “I just love the Arqana sale. I feel like there are really good families, really great physicals, and some really good value.” Mangan Strikes For €650k Siyouni Filly Jane Mangan has been a familiar face at Arqana all week and the former amateur jockey and broadcaster got in on the action during the final session when signing for lot 285 on behalf of the Thoroughbred Racing Corporation Limited. Perhaps best known for racing top-class talents such as Derby hero Oath (Ire) and the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness Stakes winner War Emblem around the turn of the century, the Thoroughbred Corporation has returned to the fold in recent years with a handful of horses in training with John and Thady Gosden, including the G2 Park Hill Fillies' Stakes third Lmay (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). The question now is whether the team's historic green and white silks can get back to where they once were as a regular sight at the top level, but it certainly won't be for the want of trying if the €650,000 purchase of this Siyouni (Fr) filly is anything to go by. Consigned by Ecurie des Monceaux, she is the second foal out of a Lope De Vega (Ire) half-sister to the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Saturday's G2 Prix de Pomone victrix Aventure (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), both bred and raced by Wertheimer and Frere. “It's an incredible family,” Mangan summed up. “The Wertheimers do a wonderful job with their breeding and she's come from Ecurie des Monceaux, an incredible house. “Prince Faisal bin Ahmad [of the Thoroughbred Corporation] was here during the week. He saw her and liked her. We've been trying to buy well-bred fillies here for the last three days, but it's been very tough for the right horses. We feel very lucky to get her.” Mangan added, “She'll go back to the UK, we'll get her broken and then we'll give her a break. It's August, so it's nice and early, and she's a February foal. We'll be in no rush–she's got a Classic pedigree and there's plenty of time for that.” Mandore Making Hay on Back of Good Season Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore International has been one of the busiest agents at Arqana over the last few days, signing for yearlings for Al Shaqab Racing, Gerard Augustin-Normand and Jean-Claude Seroul. “We've got the best two-year-old in France right now, Houquetot (Fr), so we try again this year. It has always been a good sale for us. We bought Place Du Carrousel (Ire), Zarakem (Fr), Unquestionable (Fr), Little Big Bear (Ire), and Qemah (Ire) from this sale – all Group 1 winners,” he said. Among the yearlings signed for by de Watrigant were three by the sale's leading first-season sire St Mark's Basilica (Fr), including the half-sister to Group 1 winner Feed The Flame (GB) (Kingman {GB}) for €550,000. “I have been very impressed by what I've seen by the sire,” he said. “We'll see from the sales coming but his stock here had a lot of quality. They looked mature with good balance and they were strong animals who looked to have a good attitude. They looked like racehorses, and that's what the buyers are looking for. They had a lot of Siyouni about them and of course they were both really good two-year-olds, so it looks like his stock could have some precocity as well.” The agent also manages the interests of Alain Jathiere, the part-owner of Birthe (Fr) (Study Of Man {Ire}) who ran second in Sunday's G2 Prix Alec Head, and owner of the G1 Prix Jean Prat winner Puchkine (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}). “Birthe is with a very talented young trainer, Laura Vanska, who will decide whether she goes next for the Prix Vermeille or the Prix de l'Opera,” he said. “She has done an absolutely great job with her. “M. Jathiere will remain involved with Puchkine when he stands at Haras de Beaumont next year, and M. Augustin-Normand will also be involved along with the Chehboub family, so Puchkine will have a great chance and, as a son of Starspangledbanner, will be a great addition to the French stallion ranks next year.” Kingman Filly Bound for Japan after Making €520k for “Thrilled” Applewood Family The husband-and-wife team of Philippe Brosset and Ciara O'Connor offered two yearlings in just their second year of consigning at the Arqana August Sale and it was all smiles for the pair after Lot 301, a Kingman (GB) filly out of a half-sister to the G1 Preis der Diana heroine Serienholde (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), sold to Japanese jockey-turned-trainer Hiroyasu Tanaka for €520,000. Operating under the banner of their family-run Applewood Stud, Brosset and O'Connor offered the filly on behalf of Gestut Wittekindshof and were understandably delighted with a sale which they hope will serve as an advertisement for their budding farm. “We're just thrilled with the result and so excited,” said Brosset. “We'd had a few hiccups and little things which make you wonder if you're going to make it. But we expected her to make good money because she was a nice filly and she showed very well.” He added, “It's great for us, our small place and the family. It's a team effort and this is a great advertisement. My main goal is to raise Group 1 winners and to sell a good horse for a client is brillian – it shows that we can do the job.” As well as being a German Classic winner, Serienholde has already proved herself as a top-class producer as the dam of Schnell Meister (Ger), the winner of the G1 NHK Mile Cup in Japan and by the same sire as this filly–something that clearly hadn't gone unnoticed by Tanaka. “I'm planning to ship this filly back to Japan,” he said. “Her pedigree has a special relationship with Japanese racing and I'm expecting a lot. She's by Kingman who is siring lots of winners in Japan, including a two-year-old I train who is doing very, very well. The Kingmans have very good speed which is essential to racing in Japan.” The post Fitting Finale at Arqana as Coolmore go to €1.7 Million for St Mark’s Basilica Filly appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 16. Despite being taken off the grass at Saratoga on Sunday, the Bolton Landing Stakes yielded a promising winner as Kimchi Cat (Twirling Candy–Winter Dawn, by Sky Mesa) powered down the lane to get the hardware and collect her first black-type. The juvenile filly, entered for the main track only, was a 3-1 shot here. Chasing the pace up the backstretch, the Tom Amoss trainee got into gear around the far turn and she rolled home a winner by three lengths. The final running time was 1:04.06. 18. A generation ago, the Philip H. Iselin S. used to be the premier race of the summer at Monmouth Park. Even while cycling through several name changes, the then-handicap carried Grade I status between 1976 and 1996 and a purse that swelled to $500,000 for a few years. Its importance as an August fixture for top older routers merited regular broadcasts on national TV, and the race's roster of winners boasted such standouts as Spectacular Bid, Alysheba and Skip Away. In decline ever since, the Iselin had already levelled out to its current Grade III ranking by the time Ghostzapper won it in 2004, parlaying a win at the New Jersey shore into a blockbuster second half of the season capped by a win in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic and dual Horse of the Year and Champion Older Horse Eclipse Award honors. The Iselin hasn't produced any top-ranked winners in the two decades since. But that script might have shifted on Saturday when Subsanador (Arg) (Fortify) unleashed a powerful far-turn move to mow down the pacemakers and score by 1 1/2 lengths under jockey Mike Smith for trainer Richard Mandella and owner Wathnan Racing. While Ghostzapper was a proven sprinter who used the 2004 Iselin as a springboard to show he could excel at two-turn races, Subsanador's win in the same stakes 20 summers later served as more of a confidence-builder to earn his first United States victory while prepping him for tougher competition that could eventually include the Breeders' Cup Classic. The 5-year-old's Argentinian form is already well-established, with seven dirt wins, including three at the Group 1 level. Subsanador was favored in 10 of his 12 starts in his home country, and his only two off-the-board finishes there were turf tries. Subsanador's debut in America on Dec. 26, 2023, was a disappointing fourth as the 13-10 favorite in the GII San Antonio S. at Santa Anita. But in his next outing, the Mar. 3 GI Santa Anita H., Subsanador nearly stole the 10-furlong race on the front end at 22-1 odds before grudgingly yielding to Newgate (Into Mischief) in the final strides. Subsanador was privately sold after the Big 'Cap, and in the process got transferred from trainer John Sadler to Mandella. In his first race for Mandella, he reverted to fourth in the 1 1/4-mile GII Hollywood Gold Cup S. Mandella had been pointing Subsanador for the Aug. 31 GI Pacific Classic at Del Mar, but he called an audible earlier this week and shipped to Monmouth instead. Mandella doesn't often send horses from Southern California to New Jersey, but when he does, look out: He captured the 2023 GI Haskell S. with Geaux Rocket Ride at 12-1 odds the last time he made that journey, with Smith also along for the ride. (In the last five years, Mandella has started only one other entrant at Monmouth). Mike Smith (pictured) and trainer Richard Mandella took the Jersey Shore by storm | Bill Denver/EQUI-PHOTO Mandella indicated post-win that the Sept. 28 GI California Crown S. at Santa Anita could be next. Right around the same late-1990s time frame when Iselin still had star power, Mandella was enjoying his own streak of good fortune with an impressive run of South American imports who ascended to Grade I success under his care in America, with Gentlemen (Arg), Sandpit (Brz), Siphon (Brz) and Puerto Madero (Chi) leading the way. As they say, wait long enough and everything that was once in vogue will cycle back into fashion again. Perhaps Subsanador will prove that old adage to be true by rekindling the significance of the Iselin while also reasserting Mandella's prowess with South American imports. 'Resolve and Reinvention' If you have time to read only one long-form racing feature today, make sure it's Mike McIntyre's outstanding story published last Friday in the Winnipeg Free Press (link here) about former Assiniboia Downs jockey Alyssa Selman, who was paralyzed in a 2015 racing accident but recently found the fortitude to get back up on horses thanks to a village of supporters and a specially designed saddle to assist people with disabilities. Selman, now 38, resonates as a profile in courage for how she has dealt with numerous challenges over the past decade that are not limited to the loss of the use of her legs. Amazingly, Selman has started to compete in recreational barrel racing, and she is even encouraging her 13-year-old daughter's dream of one day riding horses for a living. As Selman's sister explains in the article, “She doesn't feel sorry for herself. She doesn't feel limited. It's never 'Are we going to do it?' but 'How are we going to do it?' I think the things [other people] see her do make them want to work harder. The way that she overcomes everything, it makes them think there isn't a 'We can't,' because she's doing it.” It's the type of read that will make you rethink and reorder your own priorities. And the last shall be…first? As first reported by Ray Paulick of The Paulick Report on Aug. 13, the sixth race at FanDuel (AKA Fairmount Park) last Tuesday featured: 1) A double claim of foul by two separate riders that resulted in a double-disqualification in a four-horse field. 2) A miscalculation of the order of finish by the stewards that briefly resulted in the horse who finished last, beaten 19 lengths, being mistakenly declared the winner for a short time. 3) The re-posting of a corrected order of finish that had the third- and fourth-place horses across the line listed as the one-two official finishers. 4) A judgment that directed the track to pay out on both the stewards' mistakenly posted order of finish and the corrected version. 5) A timing malfunction that necessitated the re-timing of a portion of the race by hand. 20. DEAUVILLE, France — While nothing will ever top Derby day as the day in the racing calendar not to be missed, a close second is Prix Morny day in Deauville. Or in fact any racing day in Deauville. Those mizzly days of autumn with almost nobody there are special in their own aloof way, but Morny day – or Sumbe Prix Morny day to give it its full title – is one that offers something for everyone, whether purist or holidaymaker, in sharp suits or shorts. Probably no course in the world achieves that happy blend better than the one celebrating its 160th anniversary in the seaside town the Parisiens make their home in August, shared on and off by the turfistes and the sales crowd. At the Hippodrome de Deauville-La Touques it doesn't matter what you wear; it doesn't matter who you are. You can pay at most €12, but general entry is €5 with a race card thrown in, and children younger than 12 are allowed in for free, making it the perfect family day out. Many readers of this publication will have had more serious business to contend with in Deauville over the last few weeks. But it is important, even on those days of toil, to spend a few hours appreciating the end result of all that work by wandering around a geranium-lined racecourse in dappled sunshine while some of the best horses in Europe are paraded close at hand. Who among us now can not love Mqse De Sevigne? A double-double of Group 1 wins in the town where she was born, for the man who devoted so much of his time and energy towards the betterment of French racing for many a year. There was no mistaking the joy of Baron Edouard de Rothschild and his family as they punched the air in delight – and perhaps a little disbelief – at the latest achievement of their most elegant of mares. An Arc win next, to add to Haras de Meautry's last victory in that great race back in 1963 with Exbury? Wouldn't that be nice. Friendly Soul, too, is growing in our admiration. Her American owner-breeder George Strawbridge was in town, enjoying the shade of a bench in the parade ring as he awaited the latest victory for his smart filly. Given a super front-running ride by Kieran Shoemark, she is now four-for-five, with a Group 2 added to her collection of stakes victories. That admiration should also be extended to her runner-up, sweet little Birthe, the beating heart of Laura Vanska's small stable and the perfect advertisement for her trainer's skills as a horsewoman. But the centrepiece of this great day is of course the clash of the youngsters at the highest level, coming hard on the heels of last weekend's G1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. Eight days is a short turnaround for juveniles especially, so it was a surprise to see Whistlejacket confirmed for the Morny after the colt had finished second to Juddmonte's Babouche at the Curragh. This had always been the plan, insisted Aidan O'Brien, to come to Deauville, and here he was, this laidback and well-made chestnut colt with an easy walk and an even easier attitude, strolling around the ring in the racecourse stables long before any of his rivals emerged from their boxes. It's lovely to see a horse in the parade ring without the increasingly ubiquitous red hood and, even better, no noseband and just a snaffle bit. That's Whistlejacket: no fuss, just jump, grab the stands' rail, make all, win. Job done. Whistlejacket and his happy throng | Emma Berry It is easy to forget that he is following the example set by his elder brother Little Big Bear, a seven-length winner of the Phoenix Stakes just two years ago. Whistlejacket has inherited the chestnut coat of their late dam Adventure Seeker, a daughter of Bering, while Little Big Bear favours the bay of their imposing sire No Nay Never. Different colours, same talent, and another day of delight for the breeding partnership of the Hyde and Shanahan families. Two generations of those families were among the large throng which joined Whitstlejacket for the winning photo: a brace of Timmy Hydes, Sr and Jr, along with Paul and Charles Shanahan. “Unfortunately the mare died foaling this fella, but she sure left us a good one,” said Hyde Sr, adding of the colt's swift return to the racecourse, “We all thought it was a brave call, but Aidan is Aidan.” “It just shows what a good trainer Aidan is,” chimed in Charles Shanahan. “The horse was so calm out the back. We couldn't get over it, and going down to the start as well. “Timmy and Dad have had so much luck with No Nay Never over the years, with Ten Sovereigns, Little Big Bear, and now this fella – if we could get one of these every year we would be very happy.” Hyde's older voice of reason corrected him. “Charles, if we could get one of these every second year it would be good enough.” Good enough it was, on a racing day of near perfection. 23. While the key action was taking place at Deauville on Sunday, Britain's Northern track Pontefract delivered something special in its opening six-furlong maiden as the Richard Fahey-trained newcomer Powerful Glory (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}–Wouldntitbelovely {Ire}, by Kodiac {GB}) lived up to his name to earn TDN Rising Star status. Bought for Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum by Blandford Bloodstock for £190,000 at the Goffs UK 2yo Breeze Up, the bay who was bred by the Marnanes tanked his way to the front after the first furlong with Oisin Orr unable to curtail his enthusiasm. Bounding clear from the home turn, the 10-11 favourite devoured the uphill rise to the line to win empahtically by 5 1/2 lengths from the Karl Burke-trained Sands Of Indi (Ire) (Sands Of Mali {Fr}), with another half length back to the third-placed Dash Dizzy (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), the Charlie Johnston-trained half-brother to Sioux Nation. 25. Firmly back on track following her blip in the Musidora, George Strawbridge's Friendly Soul (GB) (Kingman {GB}–In Clover {GB}, by Inchinor {GB}) backed up her latest win in Ascot's G3 Valiant Stakes with another in Sunday's G2 Sumbe Prix Alec Head at Deauville. Returning to the 10-furlong trip over which she had impressed in Newmarket's Listed Pretty Polly Stakes and disappointed in York's Oaks trial in May, the John and Thady Gosden-trained homebred was sent to the front soon after the start by Kieran Shoemark as she had been over a mile last month. There to be shot at in the straight, the even-money favourite kept finding to hold her rivals comfortably at bay and score by a length from Birthe (Ire) (Study Of Man {Ire}), with Candala (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) 1 1/2 lengths further back in third.
