The 2024 Group 1 New Zealand Oaks trifecta will make their Australian debuts together at Morphettville on Saturday, in the 2000-metre G1 Australasian Oaks. Run over 2400m at Trentham in March, the NZ Oaks was won by Chad Ormsby’s Pulchritudinous, a three-time winner from seven starts by Irish stallion Wrote. This win fuelled speculation about the filly’s potential sale abroad and before long she was with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, after a controlling interest was purchased by Yulong. Following a soft trial third placing at Randwick, Pulchritudinous is an $8 chance for Saturday’s contest under Tim Clark, when she will again face the gallopers she defeated last month. Both Andrew Forsman’s Positivity (second) and Te Akau’s Qali Al Farrasha (third) have also made the journey across the Tasman and will be looking to turn the tables on the Waterhouse-Bott galloper. By Almanzor, Positivity will be ridden by the red-hot Michael Dee on Saturday and is currently paying $26 as Forsman hunts his first Australian Stakes winner of the season. Qali Al Farrasha, by the same sire, has jumped out at Cranbourne twice since her shift to Australia, with her second effort much better than her first. November Rain was a standout filly for Matthew Goodson and Dianna Perron, but she has proven to be a test of patience as a broodmare for the husband-and-wife duo, which was rewarded on Saturday through the deeds of her daughter No Rain Ever (No Nay Never). The Bill Thurlow-trained filly recorded her first stakes win when taking out the Listed Warstep Stakes (2000m) at Riccarton, adding to her previous placing in the Listed Uncle Remus Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie in February. “I am very happy,” Goodson said. “We knew that we had a good horse, but we were really looking for a firm track, and finally got one. She had a little bit of Soft track form but that was despite the track, not because of it. “It was a brilliant ride by Lily (Sutherland), creeping up along the rail and hooking her out at the right time, it was very good.” No Rain Ever has shown plenty of promise as a three-year-old, but Goodson believes she will mature into an even better four-year-old. “She got a little bit injured earlier in the season and we lost the mid part of the summer with her,” he said. “We have finally got her back and firing. She is still growing and developing – she is a big, strong horse – and fingers-crossed she will be a little bit better again as a four-year-old next year. “We are still finding out what her best distance is, but I would say she is a mile to a mile-and-a-quarter firm track horse. I don’t think she is a 2400m horse, 2000m would be about the limit.” Saturday was a rewarding day for Goodson and Perron, having finally bred a stakes winner out of their Group One performer November Rain, who they bought as a yearling out of Trelawney Stud’s 2008 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale draft for $170,000. She went on to win five of her 31 starts for trainer Richard Collett, including the Gr.2 Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m), and placed in the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m), Gr.1 Easter Handicap (1600m), Gr.2 Sir Tristram Fillies’ Classic (2000m), Gr.2 Counties Cup (2100m), Gr.3 Wellington Stakes (1600m), and Listed Sunline Vase (2100m). “We bought her at the Karaka Sales, Richard Collett picked her out for us,” Goodson said. “She was a tremendous filly, she was a nose second in the Oaks and she was second fresh-up in the Easter when it was still a Group One mile. We then won a Group Two with her as a four-year-old and then just a few niggly injuries led to her retirement at five. “She (No Rain Ever) is the first decent one we have managed to get out of November Rain. She hasn’t been easy to breed. Even though she is a Stravinsky mare, her mum is by Kris S, who is a big horse, and she throws to that size. It is good to finally get a top-class one out of her. “She (November Rain) is at Coolmore at the moment, she missed to one late service last year. She is still breeding so hopefully we will get another nice filly out of her.” There is a slim chance No Rain Ever could cross the Tasman to tackle the Gr.1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), however, Goodson said she will more than likely go for a spell. “No Rain Ever is almost certainly going to have a break now,” he said. “If she is bucking around the paddock next week we might go to the Queensland Oaks, but I would say that is a one or two percent chance.” Goodson was full of praise for trainer Bull Thurlow following the race and is enjoying having a number of his racing team in the Waverley horseman’s care. “I got to know Bill through Gordon Calder,” he said. “The grass track set-up at Waverley is fantastic and he has got really good staff and trackwork riders, which is key. He has got a great record with the Auckland Cup and New Zealand Oaks placegetters. It is going well.” Goodson, a former New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing chairman, has always had a fascination with racing, but it wasn’t until his return to New Zealand in the late 2000s that he decided to enter the sport, investing in three yearling fillies that have gone on to be the foundation mares for his family’s Goodson & Perron Bloodstock Partnership. “I got into racing through my grandmother, just picking horses with her when I was a kid,” he said. “I was overseas for a long time and when we came back to New Zealand we managed to get into a position where we could risk a little bit and see how it (racing) goes. “We decided to buy three well-bred fillies at the sales in a sweet spot, outside the very high-priced ones but paying enough to give ourselves a decent chance. “They ended up being a good Zabeel mare called Mary Agnes (dam of Group Two performer Time Lord), who had injury issues, but we still have one mare from that family we are breeding from. “Another was Chasing Mammon, who is the dam of Sherwood Forest, Aethelflaed, Field Of Gold and Royal Ocean, and the third was November Rain, so it has worked out alright.” While the couple have had success breeding from November Rain and Mary Agnes, Chasing Mammon has been the clear Blue Hen of Goodson and Perron’s broodmare band, highlighted by Sherwood Forest’s Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) victory, while Aethelflaed placed in the Gr.1 VRC Oaks (2500m), Royal Ocean won the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m), and Field Of Gold has placed in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), Gr.2 Auckland Guineas (1600m), Gr.3 War Decree Stakes (1600m), and won the Gr.2 Waikato Guineas (2000m). “Winning the Derby has to be the biggest highlight, that was a massive buzz,” Goodson said. “But winning any race is huge buzz, it is one of those things that you look forward to all week. Usually it ends with disappointment but sometimes you have a chance, it is great.” A couple of their racing team are under an injury cloud, but Goodson and Perron are looking forward to their return next season, and they are eagerly awaiting their younger stocks arrival to the track. “Field Of Gold has just had another little injury issue, so he won’t be seen until next season,” Goodson said. “Aethelflaed ran second in a VRC Oaks. She unfortunately had a tendon injury, although it is mid to lower grade, so hopefully she will be back next summer or autumn. “We have got a full-sister to Aethelflaed, by Saxon Warrior, who we are going to hang onto and race, and we also have a Merchant Navy two-year-old.” View the full article

Photo: Race Images South Trainers Sophie Hargreaves and Naomi Murfitt will be on a fact-finding mission when they head to Phar Lap Raceway with Brancaster Bomber on Wednesday. The son of Showcasing has recorded both of his wins at Ashburton and his Riccarton conditioners are hoping Timaru can also prove to his liking. “He just loves Ashburton, he never goes a bad race there. He has had two wins and two very close seconds where he just got pipped at the line,” Murfitt said. “He doesn’t seem to like Riccarton, as he showed us on Saturday (when finishing 10th over 1400m). Timaru is a bit of an unknown, he has been there once over 1600m in winter last year, which he didn’t really like, so we thought we might go down and give it a go.” Brancaster Bomber was runner-up at Ashburton earlier this month on a Soft 5 track and Murfitt believes Phar Lap Raceway, which was rated a Good 4 on Tuesday morning, will also be to his liking. “He is quite tricky, he has an action of a wet tracker, but doesn’t like the wet tracks. That is deceiving, he likes to keep us guessing,” Murfitt said. “He doesn’t like them rock hard either, so I think now is his time with these autumn tracks.” Murfitt said he has pulled up well following his weekend run and is bouncing out of his skin ahead of his mid-week assignment. “He seems bright. He went to the track today and did a slow round and the rider came in puffing, he was trying to go – that is always a good sign for him,” she said. “If he was quiet and not asking to go then I would be worried. He is a pretty cruisy guy now. I haven’t backed him up before, so it is a bit of an unknown for us, but he is fit and there is a race there so we thought we would give it a go.” Bred and raced by Murfitt, along with her husband Phil and father-in-law Corin, Brancaster Bomber has been a passion project, but one that hasn’t always proven easy. “My husband’s grandfather was Mick Murfitt and we inherited the mare Naughty But Nice (dam of Brancaster Bomber) from Mick,” Murfitt said. “My husband was keen to keep the breeding going. We bred a few stayers out of her, but we wanted something with a bit of speed, so we went to Showcasing. We always expected Brancaster Bomber to be more of a stayer, but he seems to have thrown a lot more to the Showcasing side and likes to run fast. “We bred him ourselves and have done everything ourselves with him. It has been quite the journey, he hasn’t been the easiest. He was an absolute nightmare foal and he just about put us off from ever breeding again. He was a bit of a rogue, but he is very chilled these days and just knows his job and wants to get on with it. It is very rewarding from that point-of-view.” Horses have always been a key pillar in Murfitt’s life, but she said it wasn’t until meeting her husband that she got involved with racing, and it was his encouragement that led her to take out her trainer’s license and enter a partnership with good friend Sophie Hargreaves. “I have always loved horses and been involved with horses,” she said. “I married my husband Phil and that is how I was exposed to racing – Phil’s father, Corin Murfitt, was a race vet. “We used to breed them and then send them off to train, and Phil used to say, ‘why don’t you give it a go?’. “I got into it and absolutely love it. I love the training side of it and keeping them happy. “I went into partnership with Sophie Hargreaves, she was a big driver towards getting me to do it. “When I moved to Christchurch, she was one of the first people I met. I went and track rode for her and loved it. She always used to say that I was doing so much with the horses, why didn’t I just train? “She has got so much knowledge from growing up in the thoroughbred industry. In the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m), McDonald will mount dual Group 2 victor and last year’s Group 1 Tatt’s Tiara (1400m) runner-up, Roots. Additionally, he’ll partner Concello in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m). “Chris Waller is going to take a couple down, which suits us, and we’re able to get a couple of good chances throughout the day,” McDonald added. The six-year-old, trained by Sean and Jake Casey, concluded his racing career with a ninth-place finish in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 30, trailing behind Cascadian. In addition to his Northerly Stakes triumph, Dom To Shoot clinched the Group 3 Northam Stakes (1300m) in 2023, showcasing his prowess on the turf. With a record of eight wins and placements in 16 out of 44 starts, his legacy in the racing world is profound. Riverton galloper Lightning Jack will aim for back-to-back victories on his adopted home track of Otaki on Thursday when contesting the Listed ANZAC Mile (1600m). With few options for the highly-rated son of Per Incanto closer to home, trainer Kelvin Tyler opted to send Lightning Jack for a northern campaign that kicked off in winning fashion at the Central Districts course on April 13. “All reports have been that he’s gone forward in leaps and bounds,” Tyler said. “A nice, loose track helped him last time and he went really well. I don’t think we’ll get that sort of track on Thursday and there’s a few nice horses in there, but he’s a class horse who has won a lot of races.” A Group One performer over a mile, Lightning Jack will aim for a seventh win at the distance, but will be among the top-weights at handicap conditions on Thursday. “He gets to run on his home track again, he’ll have to lug a bit of weight, but I can’t fault him otherwise,” Tyler said. The talented seven-year-old may be joined by younger stablemate Prince Alby in the midweek feature, who would be stepping back in distance from an unfavourable run in heavy conditions in the Listed Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m). “He was clearly topweight that day, and you can’t be three lengths off the second-last horse at the 600m off a slow tempo and think you’ll run past them, and his jockey admitted she’d made that mistake,” Tyler said. “He’s come through that really well though and I’ve kept him fresh stepping back to the mile, but I’m undecided whether I’ll run him in this race or over 2040m at Wanganui on Saturday. “He’d be down the bottom of the weights at Otaki, they might be a bit sharp for him at the mile but as long as he’s running on well in the top three or four I’d be happy. “I’ll nominate for the other race, and just assess the fields before deciding where we will go.” The Sacred Falls gelding finished second to Canheroc in the Listed Marton Cup (2200m) during a prior North Island mission, and Tyler may look to add to his black-type record in the Listed Rotorua Cup (2200m) on May 11. “Alby may go to the Rotorua Cup all going well in a couple of weeks’ time, and there’s the Rangitikei Gold Cup at Trentham (Listed, 1600m) which is a good option for Lightning Jack,” he said. Closer to home, Tyler has earmarked six of his team for the Wingatui meeting on Sunday, including the in-form Go Lotte and another last-start winner in Albatross. “Go Lotte has come right at the right time, a bit of give in the track has helped her so she’d be a reasonable chance,” he said. “Albatross is another horse that has gotten rid of her niggles I believe, so she’d be another nice chance.” View the full article

Churchill Downs Inc., (CDI) invoked a horse-health argument on Monday in an attempt to get the Kentucky Court of Appeals not to overturn the banishment of trainer Bob Baffert that Thoroughbred owner Amr Zedan is trying to reverse so his 'TDN Rising Star' Muth (Good Magic) can gain entry into the GI Kentucky Derby. “This case has already drawn intense media attention,” CDI stated in one of two court filings Apr. 22 that seek to halt Zedan's incorporated racing stable from moving forward with its appeal for emergency relief and a temporary injunction. “A court order compelling CDI to house Muth on its property for a week, with a suspended trainer in tow, would create a media circus and would be an enormous distraction for Churchill Downs, its personnel, and other owners and trainers that have fairly earned a berth to the Derby (in addition to overtly infringing CDI's property rights). “That is hardly a fair result-and it is one that jeopardizes the well-being of horses being housed at the track who have earned the right to be there under the rules,” CDI alleged. “This Court should deny all of Zedan's requested relief,” CDI concluded. On Apr. 18, a lower court in Kentucky denied a motion by Zedan Racing Stables, Inc. to make Muth eligible for the Derby by forcing CDI to drop its ban against Baffert. CDI had barred Baffert from its properties shortly after the 2021 Derby, which the now-disqualified, Zedan-owned, Baffert-trained Medina Spirit won while testing positive for betamethasone. Baffert's ban was initially just supposed to last for two Derbies. But in July 2023 CDI extended the penalty through 2024. Baffert is not a party to Zedan's lawsuit. The Hall-of-Fame trainer had already lost a similar lawsuit in a federal court in 2023 that sought to put an end to CDI's ban. Last Friday, the day after the lower court refused to grant an injunction favoring Muth, Zedan asked the appeals court to consider, “At a minimum, a partial injunction [enabling] Muth to be stabled under Derby rules at Churchill Downs Racetrack by 11:00 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, Apr. 27.” Zedan reasoned that, “Such an approach will properly protect the rights and interests that hang in the balance and enable the upcoming Derby to proceed as it should, with all qualified horses racing and the very best horse winning.” CDI's filings on Monday told the Kentucky Court of Appeals that, “Zedan's lawsuit is the horseracing equivalent of asking a court to kick out teams that had earned a spot in March Madness on the eve of the tournament and replace them with teams that did not qualify under the existing rules for qualification.” CDI's filing on Monday gave its view on what transpired in the lower court last week: “The Circuit Court did not abuse its discretion in denying Zedan's last-minute bid to litigate its way into the Derby and displace up to three horses that earned their berths under rules in place for many months.” At a different point, CDI argued, “Like all private entities, CDI has the right to determine who may participate in events that it organizes and hosts on its own property. That right is confirmed under Kentucky common law and regulations issued by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission. “Nothing in the law gives Zedan a right to challenge the basis for CDI's decision to extend Baffert's suspension,” CDI continued. “The Jefferson Circuit Court correctly rejected Zedan's eleventh-hour attempt to litigate its way into the Kentucky Derby. As the Circuit Court held, Zedan failed to establish any of the three requirements for a temporary injunction.” Zedan's Apr. 19 filing hadn't seen it that way. “Without purporting to find any substantive justification for CDI's ban, the Jefferson Circuit Court denied [the] request for injunctive relief,” it stated. Zedan's filing from last Friday further alleged that CDI was “excluding a horse based on a trainer's public 'narrative' rather than actual qualifications, compliance, and merit.” There was one thing that Zedan and CDI did agree to on Monday: That with five days until the Derby entry deadline, and 12 days until the race itself, both sides stated they were willing to do whatever they could to speed up the process and get an answer from the appeals court as swiftly as possible. To that end, CDI earlier on Monday had agreed to expedite its filing of the above-referenced legal responses. The gaming corporation could have waited until the court-ordered deadline of Wednesday, Apr. 24. Zedan's legal team, too, made it known that it was willing and able to move quickly to facilitate a quick court order. “To further assist the Court as it works towards prompt, informed resolution of this emergency appeal, counsel for Zedan will stand available for oral argument at any time and via any means that the Court may deem helpful and fitting,” Zedan's Apr. 22 legal filing stated. “Zedan and its counsel greatly appreciate this Court's expedited attention and will continue working with Churchill Downs on an appropriate, agreeable process even as important disputes persist between the parties on the merits,” the filing stated. Alflaila (GB), who was last seen finishing fifth behind Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown in September, has been given a clean bill of health by trainer Owen Burrows as he prepares to return to action following an injury-plagued four-year-old campaign. The son of Dark Angel (Ire) was restricted to just two starts in 2024, first returning from nearly 10 months off to win the G2 York S. on the Knavesmire in July and then passing the post only three and a quarter lengths behind the dual Derby winner at Leopardstown. That was Alflaila's first run in Group 1 company and Burrows was encouraged by what he saw, with other races at the top level likely to enter calculations if the five-year-old comes through his first run of the season unscathed. “He was only just over three lengths behind Auguste Rodin [in the Irish Champion Stakes], so he doesn't have a huge amount to find to step up into these Group 1 races,” said the trainer. “In the last couple of weeks he's started fast work and it'll be good to get him back. He obviously didn't have the longest of seasons last year, but he won well at York on King George day and then it'd didn't go to plan in the Irish Champion Stakes. That was the case for a lot of the English horses and then, unfortunately, he had a little setback and that finished him for the season.” “Touch wood we can get him back soon,” added Burrows before considering immediate plans. “I was hoping to start him in the Brigadier Gerard, but that may just come a fraction too soon. “It all depends how the next few weeks go, but he looks as well as ever, he's filled out and strengthened up again. Stephen Brunetti, whose family operates Red Oak Farm and Red Oak Stud and owns Hialeah Race Course, passed away Monday after a long battle with cancer. He died at his home in Delray Beach, Florida, surrounded by his family. He was 56. His passing was first announced in a Facebook posting from his son, Stephen Brunetti Jr. Brunetti took on an added role at Red Oak when his father, John Brunetti Sr., passed away in 2018. Along with his brother John Jr., he also took over as the owner of the casino at Hialeah. Hialeah last conducted a Thoroughbred meet in 2001. “Ever since my father passed away, I just want to do everything at a higher level,” Brunetti told the Blood-Horse in 2022. “And that's what we're trying to do: acquire better mares, breed to the better stallions, better horses, and if it means you got to sell some here and there as yearlings, that's what we're going to do. We're going to be a little bit more commercial. We've had a lot of success with the breeding program. My family loves going to Saratoga and we loved going up north this summer, and that's where we want to participate.” “Stephen was the horse guy in the family. He was a super breeder and was actually director of racing at the end of Hialeah. He loved the horse racing business,” said Red Oak's racing manager Rick Sacco. Under the leadership of Stephen Brunetti, Red Oak enjoyed some of its greatest success in recent years. Mind Control was bred by Red Oak and co-owned by Red Oak and Madaket Stables LLC. He won 10 stakes, including three Grade I's, the GI Cigar Mile H, the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. and the GI Hopeful S. He owned and bred another Grade I winner in Unbridled Mo (Uncle Mo), the winner of the 2018 GI Apple Blossom H. The Brunetti family also owned King for a Day (Uncle Mo), a listed stakes winner that now stands at stud in New York at Irish Hill & Dutchess View Stallions. “He loved our game and was getting more heavily involved in breeding,” said one of his trainers, Greg Sacco. “Our industry lost a real cool guy. He put up a valiant fight against cancer.” According to Rick Sacco, the passing of Stephen Brunetti will not slow down the Red Oak operations. Sacco said that John Brunetti Jr. is still very much committed to having a racing and breeding operation. In addition, Stephen Brunetti's son, Stephen Brunetti Jr., a recent graduate from the University of Kentucky, is ready to take on added role in the racing and breeding operations. “John Jr. has a love of horse racing and shared that passion with his father,” Rick Sacco said. “We will continue on. We've already spoken about having horses in New York and at Monmouth this year. We are also looking forward to the King for a Day babies. Bill Mott's Barn 19 was busy Monday morning as Kentucky Derby and Oaks hopefuls GSW Resilience (Into Mischief) and MGISW Just F Y I (Justify) put in published five-furlong workouts. The former galloped about one mile before producing a move clocked in 1:01.60 under jockey Junior Alvarado and easily galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.60, according to Churchill Downs clocker John Nichols. “He's the type of horse that has taken a little more time to mature than some others,” trainer Bill Mott said. “We took our time with his development and it seems to have worked out well.” Just F Y I was clocked in :59.80 on her return to the work tab and galloped out six panels in 1:12.20, seven furlongs in 1:25.40, and completed a mile in hand in 1:40.20 under Junior Alvarado. “She's a very nice filly and we had a minor setback with her this winter when she developed a fever on race day [in the GII Davona Dale] and we had to scratch that day,” Mott said. “It's one of those situations where we hoped she'd get over the virus quickly to return training, and she did. Then, we started looking at the [GI] Ashland as her next option.” Champion MGISW Fierceness (City of Light) arrived at Churchill Downs Monday morning from South Florida as well as GI Florida Derby runner-up Catalytic (Catalina Cruiser) and GSW Domestic Product (Practical Joke). GI Toyota Blue Grass winner Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) had his first training day beneath the Twin Spires, galloping a little over a mile. Domestic Product and Sierra Leone will likely have their final pre-Derby works Saturday, weather dependent. As of Monday, 16 of the top 20 Derby contenders are on-site with GISW Stronghold (Ghostzapper) set to ship on Tuesday from California and GSW West Saratoga (Exaggerator) scheduled to arrive Friday from Lexington. A new Hong Kong Garden will be in place at Newbury Racecourse when the track hosts five World Pool races on Saturday, May 18, including the G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. which headlines the fixture. The Hong Kong Garden will offer themed food and drink, plus a range of entertainment including live performances from Albert Chau, the inaugural winner of Midlife, Sing and Shine, a talent competition run on terrestrial TV in Hong Kong. Mark Leigh, interim CEO at Newbury Racecourse, said, “We're thrilled to introduce the new Hong Kong Garden for this year's Al Shaqab Lockinge with Ladies Day to mark and celebrate the growth of our partnership with World Pool. The Al Shaqab Lockinge is renowned for the breadth of entertainment it offers racegoers and this year's edition promises even more excitement; we're looking forward to everything's that in store.” World Pool, the largest globally commingled horse racing pools, was created and is powered by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC). In January, it was announced that nine new race days had been added to the World Pool calendar in the first six months of 2024, with bettors from 28 countries able to bet into the same pools on those given days. The five World Pool races scheduled for the Lockinge meeting in 2024 also represents an increase from two last year.
